Celebrating Your Special Day:

Tips on Planning the Parties Leading Up to the Wedding

Congratulations! You just got engaged, so let the wedding planning begin! In addition to planning your special day, there will be lots of parties leading up to the big event. These parties can include engagement parties, bridal showers, couple’s shower, bridal/bridesmaids’ luncheons, bachelor and bachelorette parties and the rehearsal dinner. Read below for more information, such as who usually hosts each party as well as tips and hints.

Engagement Parties – Traditionally, the bride’s parents host the engagement party as the first official celebration for the couple. After the bride’s parents host a party, the groom’s parents could host their own celebration. Another, less traditional way, would be for both parents to cohost an engagement party. It is also common for the friends to throw a gathering or for the couple to host. Usually, the engagement party is held within a few months of the proposal. Invitations should go out about a month before the event. When deciding whom to invite, think of the people you’ll be inviting to your wedding. The guest lists for both celebrations should be the same; however, it can also depend on how far and close family and friends live. If a relative lives across the country, you might decide to not invite them to the engagement party and only the wedding. Also, decide on how formal the event will be. This can also help narrow down the guest list. One rule of thumb -- engagement parties are part of the wedding celebrations. If an invitee receives an invitation for this party, they will assume they will also be invited to the wedding.

Bridal Showers – Part of a maid of honor’s responsibilities include hosting

a bridal shower. It is also an event for bridesmaids, relatives and friends of the bride to help with the planning. Bridal showers are held a month or two before the wedding and can be held a variety of ways at different venues. Some venues could include a restaurant, spa, tearoom or a private home. When you begin to plan, talk with the bride about who to invite as well as what she wants as the theme and time of day. The guest list can include female family and friends of the bride.

Send invitations out one month before the party. Be sure to include the couple’s registry information, if needed. As for the party, plan out the menu, decorations, games and favors. Don’t forget to designate someone to record the bride’s gifts for “thank you” notes. Typically, brides have the responsibility of providing hostess gifts for the shower’s hosts. These gifts can be flowers, a box of treats, a lunch out, a candle or another little way to say “thank you.”

Couple’s Shower – Another version of a shower is a couple’s shower. Since a bridal shower is in honor of the bride, a couple’s shower is a celebration for the bride and groom. This event is usually more casual and is similar to a cocktail or dinner party. Themes can include a barbecue, around the world, pool or beach party, or centered on a movie or book. As for the guest list, include friends and relatives of the bride and the groom. On the invitations, be sure to include the

fact the shower is a couple’s shower. Notifying guests will help them adjust their gifts to being more couple-oriented, such as home goods.

Bridal/Bridesmaids’ Luncheons – This event is not

included as one of the main wedding celebrations because not all weddings include a bridal/bridesmaids’ luncheon.

These luncheons are similar to bridal showers, in the sense that only female family and friends are invited. This includes bridesmaids, female family and friends who are participating in the wedding, mothers of the bride and groom, aunts and sisters. It can be hosted by the bridesmaids in honor of the bride or vice versa. However, it has become more common for the bride to host the event as a way to thank her bridesmaids and present her gifts to them. Even if the bride doesn’t host, make it a priority to thank your attendants and give them their presents. Traditionally, the luncheon is held the day before or the day of the wedding. Besides the luncheon, other ideas are a picnic in the park, dinner at a restaurant, brunch at the bride’s home or a location close to the wedding venue, or a wine tasting at a local winery. A bridal/bridesmaids’ luncheon can be traditional and formal or casual and laid back; whatever best fits your style.

Bachelor and Bachelorette Parties – These parties are held separately

in honor of the bride and groom and are hosted by their close friends. For each event, incorporate the bride’s or groom’s interests. It could be at night, during the day or a destination party. Get the guest list from the couple, so they are comfortable with who attends because the goal of the party is to have fun. Usually, friends and some family members will attend. Some ideas for bachelor parties are a weekend camping or fishing, and for bachelorette parties, the theme could be a day at the spa, a night out on the town or a trip to the beach.

Rehearsal Dinner – The rehearsal dinner is one of the most common wedding celebrations. It is held the night before the wedding and is hosted by the groom’s parents. The party gives the two families a chance to celebrate and relax before the next day. The bride and groom can give input on the decisions, but it is usually up to the groom’s parents to plan the dinner. The guest list should include immediate family, members of the wedding party and their spouses or significant others, parents of child attendants and the officiant and his or her spouse or significant other. The rehearsal dinner can be formal or casual and can be held a variety of ways, such as a cocktail party, sit-down dinner, buffet or barbecue. Formal invitations are recommended for the event.

Getting married and planning your wedding is a very happy time in your life. It is also a time full of celebrations. With each event, the most important thing is to take the time to relax, enjoy and make memories with your family and friends.

Who Pays For What?

As with everything, there are exceptions to all rules.

This is especially true when it comes to who pays for what throughout the wedding process. The general rule of thumb is that the bride’s family pays for the wedding and the groom’s family pays for the rehearsal dinner. Now, unless you have one heck of a rehearsal dinner, the numbers are far from even; which is why many people have begun tacking on a few of the smaller expenses to the groom’s side’s tab. Below is a breakdown of modern-day “Who Pays For What?”

BRIDE’S FAMILY

• Save-the-Dates, invitations and “thank you” card stationery • Wedding venue (church, garden, park, etc.)

• Music during the ceremony (organist, string quartet, etc.)

• Bride’s attire throughout the day • Flowers for the ceremony (including bouquets for bridesmaids) • Flowers and centerpieces for the reception • Photographer • Cake • Reception venue, food and all professional services associated with the reception • Transportation

GROOM’S FAMILY

• Rehearsal dinner and all it entails (invitations, alcohol, decorations, etc.)

• Groom’s attire • Bride’s bouquet • Groomsmen’s boutonnières • Corsages for special guests like mothers and grandmothers • Honeymoon expenses

BRIDE OR GROOM’S FAMILY

• Officiant

• Liquor/alcohol at the reception • DJ or band at the reception

BRIDESMAIDS

• Attire, shoes and accessories • Pre-wedding parties for the bride including bridal shower(s) and bachelorette party

• Engagement party for the couple • Additional showers/parties While the responsibilities of some of these expenses can get a little blurred, it is important that all conversations about wedding expenses leave everyone on the same page. Because, generally, the bride’s family pays for the wedding and the groom’s family pays for the rehearsal dinner, that can give you a basis for everything and avoid uncomfortable conversations.

There are definitely gray areas where some families have decided to divvy up the responsibilities a little more, and that is great! It is also important to note that no matter how big or small your wedding is or how much it costs, at the end of your beautiful day, you will be just as married as everyone else. Try not to let the small details of your wedding cloud the reason why you are getting married in the first place.

Be Our Guest

The Reality of Putting Together the Guest List

You’ve found the “who” and chosen the “where” and “when,” but adding the other players to this wonderful production – also known as your wedding – is not always as much fun. By choosing a ceremony and reception venue, you’ve zeroed in on the style and size of your celebration, so now you’re thinking food and seating. Putting together your guest list is the catalyst that affects all those other elements, and that’s where many couples worry and agonize, often facing tense conversations with parents over who makes the final cut. But, a few reasonable rules, some civil give-and-take and honest communication (see below) can ease your path to a finished guest list.

• Let’s not even mention the phrase “and guest” because if you’re inviting someone’s fiancé, live-in partner or long-time significant other, put in the extra effort to find out their name.

You’ll want the correct spelling for place cards, too.

• Family always! Besides your immediate families and grandparents, that includes aunts, uncles and cousins even if you don’t see them regularly.

• Kids or no kids can be a tricky issue, but the choice is completely yours, and one you shouldn’t feel uncomfortable communicating. You can also set an age limit for children/ teens and make that clear by actually including older children’s names on the invitation. (You’ll probably find that young parents are happy to have a night out, so don’t worry about hard feelings.)

• Start with a dream list of whom you’d like to include. Make a note of everyone you would ideally have sharing your special day in that perfect world where catering charges and rental fees don’t exist.

• Then, as you start to think more realistically and narrow it down a bit, delete friends you haven’t spoken with in the last two or three years. If you aren’t really part of each other’s lives, off they go.

• Believe it or not, having an “A” list and a “B” list has its advantages. But, you must send out your invitations even before the suggested eight weeks in advance, or you won’t have time to make adjustments based on the number of regrets. Mail invitations 10 weeks in advance to give yourself a safety net. Sending those “B” list invitations too close to the day will alert guests they weren’t on the priority list. (Major hint alert: Make sure you order extras of all the pieces of your invitation!)

• If you are close to only one or two co-workers outside the office, it makes sense to invite only them. If you work in a large office, sometimes it’s best to invite all or none – with the logical reason that you’d like to include everyone but budget and space just don’t allow for it. The same is true for your boss. If you’re close with them socially, an invitation is probably expected. If not, it’s a nice gesture which they will probably decline but will graciously send a gift.

• If your space can’t accommodate dates for all your single friends, do at least include a plus one for your attendants. They are supporting you with time, energy and love, and it’s the right thing to do.

• Traditionally, half the guest list should be the couple’s choice, while each set of parents contributes one fourth of the list.

However, who’s paying for the celebration can affect the equation. Even if the bride and groom plan to cover all the expenses themselves, both sets of parents need to be included in creating the guest list. Ideally, once your “dream list” begins to whittle down, if your parents are asked to cut a few names, you and your fiancé need to cut a few, as well. You’ll find that conversations about cutting the list are best held face-to-face with generous doses of compromise sprinkled in!

• Never invite someone just because you attended his or her wedding unless your budget is unlimited, and you’re hosting a huge event. This is not first grade (remember, where everyone needs to be invited to the birthday party, or there are hurt feelings?) This is – we hope – an adult party where the love and focus is on your wonderful new life together!

Is a Holiday Wedding for You?

Congratulations! You’re engaged and ready to get started on plans for a celebration that lets the world know you’ve found your perfect match and two lives will become one! Picking your wedding date is decision number one, and boy, it can be much more challenging than you might expect. And, because you and your fiancé met at a Christmas party, you’ve thought that a December wedding might be for you.

Let’s look at some of the pros and cons to a holiday wedding.

Since I am a big fan of holiday weddings, let’s talk about the cons first, so we can move on to more inspiring thoughts!

CONS TO HOLIDAY WEDDING PLANNING • Weather - Unless you live in San Diego

where I hear it’s perfect every single day of the year, this is a major factor to consider.

July 4th? It could be a perfectly comfortable 76 degrees as the sun sets and the fireworks begin. Or, it could be sweltering with the added charm of a late afternoon thunderstorm. For a summer holiday wedding, the venue’s ability to provide comfortable spaces is key! Along with personalized bottled water and programs in the shape of fans.

Christmas time, Hanukkah, New Year’s Eve or Valentine’s Day -- will Mother Nature gift you with a light dusting of snow that creates the perfect backdrop for your photos or will La Nina send 6” of the white stuff making travel difficult for you and your guests? What are your vendor’s policies on winter weather?

Sure, the venue might be able to get one guy in to shovel the sidewalk and turn the heat up, but can your baker deliver a cake if the roads are questionable? These might not be

deal breakers but planning a winter wedding means that you must have conversations about weather plans well in advance so that everyone is on the same page and comfortable with “Plan B.”

• Cost - You’re not the only one thinking

about having what is essentially a big party during the holidays. You’re competing with family reunions, company holiday parties and the actual holiday itself. Don’t be surprised to find that some vendors may impose, with good reason, holiday surcharges. After all, you’re asking people to work for you on a holiday, so there may be a cost associated with that.

• Availability - For the same reasons

listed above about the other events you’re competing with, do not delay on getting your arrangements firmed up well in advance of your wedding date. While some perfectly fabulous wedding celebrations can be planned in three to six months, a holiday wedding is typically going to work out much better with a full 12 months of coordination.

And, if you are considering a venue with multiple ballrooms or event areas, be sure to ask what other events might be taking place while you are there. The last thing you need is some wild office Christmas party next door to your charming, peaceful, winter wonderland wedding reception!

• Plan It, Will They Come? - Let’s face it, we all know how quickly holiday calendars fill up and that traveling around just about any holiday, from Easter to Labor Day, can pose a challenge. So, before you have your heart set on that special date, take a short poll of your nearest and dearest to gauge their willingness to plan in advance and to add your celebration to a season that, no matter how hard we try to avoid it, creates stress.

Christmas? The wreaths are already on the windows, and there’s a stunning 12-foot tree in the lobby! Easter? Some of the most spectacular flowers are now in season,

making them available and more affordable!

Holidays offer a natural jumping off point for your décor and make it easier to incorporate charming details that can make your event design extra special. Just don’t over-do it! It is your wedding after all, and you don’t want it to feel like just another July 4th BBQ or New Year’s Eve party.

• Plan It, They Will Come! - In complete

contrast to the con above, with plenty of notice and an adorable save-the-date card, your most beloved friends and family will be delighted to have an extra special reason to celebrate with you during the holidays!

Maybe this will give them a chance to see you when they normally wouldn’t at the holidays?

And, many of us have a few extra days off around a holiday, so that helps, too! As is the case with any wedding date you choose -- holiday or otherwise -- those that truly want to be there will find a way!

• Bon Appetit! - Almost all of the holidays

celebrated in America have an expected culinary angle giving you a head start on the

menu planning for your reception! I have even seen a very elegant summer reception featuring Chicago-style hot dogs because the groom was from the windy city, paired with Maryland crab cakes representing the bride!

Who doesn’t love a hot dog in the summer?

And what could be more enticing than a turkey dinner with all the fixin’s and a pie buffet when you don’t have to do any of the work? Similar to the décor, you might choose not to take the holiday tie-in to your menu to extremes, but it adds a warm touch.

• Suitable for Framing - The final pro to having a holiday wedding is your wedding album! Your professional photographer knows how to make the most of the holiday elements surrounding your big day and will capture images of the two of you that will bring joy to you and your family for years to come! After all, who isn’t a sucker for a happy couple in a horse-drawn carriage with candlelit windows and twinkly lights in the background? (And, don’t even get me started on faux-fur wraps and winter wedding gowns!)

Bridesmaids: Choosing Your Dream Team

When the excitement of saying “yes” turns to a flood of nervousness over choosing your attendants, take a deep breath. You’ll be bombarded with buzzwords like “supportive,” “devoted,” “family first” and “friends for life,” and it’s easy to let your emotions take over. (First hint: That’s why it’s never wise to go immediately from slipping on an engagement ring to picking up the phone and asking friends to be bridesmaids.) Give your choices some serious thought, and take your inspiration from these words of wisdom:

Reality check: Your bridesmaids need to support your

relationship with your fiancé. Period. You also need to know they will support you after the wedding and well into your married years, so make sure these are the girls you’ll be just as close to in five years and in 10 years.

As we said, choose family first. You may not be close to your future sister-in-law today, but time may change that, and she will always be your family. Simply put, it’s the right thing to do.

Are these VIPs the friends you share heart-to-heart talks

with, and the ones who encourage your dreams, during both good times and bad times? If they’ve been with you for the most important parts of your life so far, you can look to them for honesty when it counts.

Don’t extend invitations simply out of obligation. If you have friends on a tight budget or

who are juggling career and family, they may be relieved to support you in other ways or work “behind the scenes.”

Remember other significant tasks that are just as important: reading a favorite passage during the ceremony, passing out programs or lighting candles before the ceremony.

Your bridesmaids and groomsmen don’t have to balance. An uneven

number is perfectly fine, and you can arrange the wedding party at the altar any way that suits you. The processional can also be configured in a number of different ways -- don’t feel tied to one bridesmaid walking with one groomsman down the aisle. Recent bride, Erica Eagle, faced that very dilemma: “I was so worried about mine and my husband’s number being even. I ended up having a few of the groomsmen with a bridesmaid on each arm during the ceremony exit and reception entrance. There are ways around it if you don’t have the same number on each side!” Newlywed Sara Wiles says she was adamant about not having “fillers” just to ensure that her bridesmaids and groomsmen numbers were equal. “It was important to me to have a group of girls I knew supported me through thick and thin,” said Sara.

Don’t go overboard. Base the size of your wedding party on the size of

your guest list. A large group of attendants is also a big commitment for the bride and groom. Entertaining them pre-wedding, potentially housing them for the weekend, purchasing attendants’ gifts and more -- everything adds up.

“I had 11 bridesmaids,” said Forsyth Woman Engaged! Editor Brooke Eagle.

“While it was a blast, it was also very, very expensive to include 11 people in everything we wanted to do.”

The labels of “maid-of-honor” and “matron-of-honor” aren’t defined in

stone. Forsyth Magazines’ Denise Heidel recalls not making that distinction when she married five years ago. “I simply couldn’t rank my friends that way,” said Denise. “I was afraid if I tried, I’d have some hurt feelings to contend with.”

Instead, be grateful you have more than one person who can calmly take over when a detail goes awry the morning of the wedding, after sitting you down and saying “I’ve got this!”

Keep your attendants’ dress shopping experience as painless as possible. “The biggest challenge I faced was walking the line of being an

over-demanding bride with strict requests while still keeping their identities and making the process fun,” said Sara. “My bridesmaids wore mismatched dresses (all in the same color) that they chose the style. I had no preference on their hair and makeup, and I only asked they wear black shoes and have fun!”

A Wedding Planner Gives Advice

It’s no secret that wedding planning has its fair share of challenges. But, have no fear!

There is no challenge too monumental that can’t be tackled with a deep breath and a little bit of patience.

Here is a little insider scoop to help you get through some of the most common issues:

GUEST LIST:

When your guest list is larger than you expected, it has an impact on every aspect from the wedding venue and invitations to the food and bar tab, even the number of chairs and covers that are rented. Manage your expectations and your budget. In Forsyth County, the per-guest cost could run $250 per person!

Think about what’s truly important and how you want to live after the wedding. If you can’t say “NO,” then consider time. There is nothing wrong with taking your time to save with a year-and-a-half to a two-year engagement. In the end, you will have the wedding you want without breaking the bank.

THE INCOMPATIBLE BRIDAL PARTY:

Unfortunately, many weddings have that one bridesmaid who doesn’t like her dress…who refuses to wear the selected shoes…who, all of a sudden, doesn’t wear make up. Then, on the other side of the aisle, there’s that one groomsman who fails to put the deposit on his tuxedo rental and doesn’t show up on time for the rehearsal.

That sort of drama adds unnecessary stress to your wedding. Sometimes, it’s appropriate to have a gentle heart-to-heart with that person. Of course, this should always be done in private. But, before the confrontation arises, ask yourself if the problem could be you. Are you becoming a bridezilla/ groomzilla, sending multiple text messages or selecting pricy attire just because you have to wear Vera Wang or Christian Louboutin?

An easy way to avoid this – don’t choose your wedding party out of obligation. Choose people you’re truly close to, and be sure to clearly communicate your expectations. Create a detailed wedding informational email that entails every area of the wedding from shoes and hair to jewelry and transportation ideas. Present your expectations sooner rather than later, so if someone needs to gracefully bow out, he or she can do so.

THE PINTEREST BRIDE:

Pinterest is a great place for brides to be inspired for their weddings. However, when designing a wedding, it should be a reflection of the couple’s personalities.

A bride can find some Pinterest ideas disappointing when she discovers the price tag involved, or a great idea shows up at every wedding she attends before her own. Govern your expectations, take the picture and use only for inspiration like the type of flower shown and the colors used, but try to put your own personal twist and stay within a reasonable budget.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT VENDOR:

Every bride should feel excited about her wedding day, NOT exhausted. Hiring a wedding planner is a great way to make that happen. Not only do you get a professional to handle the legwork, but you also get recommendations for high-quality vendors who can deliver your expectations.

Perhaps you have a friend who can plan weddings/events or an uncle who loves to take photography.

Maybe your Aunt Sally makes the best cakes you’ve ever tasted. That’s great. You’re still going to want to hire a professional. Beyond the fact that you want your family and friends to be guests, not working guests at your wedding, you get what you pay for. Free or deeply discounted services for family friends may not run as smoothly as they will from those who have a vested interest in delivering the highest quality.

Read reviews on Weddingwire.com and TheKnot.com, and trust your instincts when you interview with a vendor to make sure personalities work together. Make sure that you entrust your vision with the professionals you’ve hired.

Wedding Themes Defined: Which One Are You?

Rustic – A rustic wedding includes a country-inspired atmosphere.

Flowers, wood and lace help create a rustic feel through all parts of the wedding. This wedding theme is similar to shabby chic, and the wedding is usually outside.

Vintage – Do you love old things and nostalgia? A vintage-themed

wedding uses old family heirlooms, antique style dresses and distressed furniture to help create the feeling. Also, it includes timeless music and other old-timey accessories. A version of a vintage-themed wedding could be a Victorian-inspired wedding. You could even incorporate older pieces of jewelry to your décor.

Vineyard – Within the last few years, wineries and vineyards have become very popular venues. Deep colors, such as reds and purple, can be used in decorations, clothing and accessories. Use wine bottles and other winery items as accent pieces. For example, use wine bottles as table numbers or for a guest book or turn wine corks into place cards.

Seaside – A seaside wedding is usually held in the summer and on the beach or close to it at a club or resort. There are many ways to decorate for a seaside wedding. You can go with the nautical feel or the beach feel with sand, starfish, sand dollars, etc. One cute idea is giving your guests a pair of flip-flops to wear during the ceremony and reception.

Books & Movies – There have been some weddings with Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, etc. themes. If you both love books or have a favorite movie, this theme can be fun to center your wedding around.

Some popular ideas are the The Wizard of Oz and The Great Gatsby.

When it comes to planning a wedding, there are many things to consider. What will your dress look like? What flavors of cake will you have? Along with these decisions comes one of the most important -what theme will your wedding be centered on?

A wedding theme reflects the couple’s personal style. Your wedding theme can be inspired by a city or place, season, or your favorite hobbies, as well as, songs, movies and books. This theme is then displayed through the wedding’s invitations, decorations, centerpieces and even the design of your cake. But, how do you go about finding your perfect wedding theme? Think about your style, personality and favorites. Do you love the beach, or do you like more of a rustic atmosphere? Also, think about what colors, symbols and patterns are meaningful to you.

BELOW ARE SOME OF THE MORE POPULAR WEDDING THEMES TO GET YOU STARTED: Shabby Chic – A shabby chic-themed wedding consists of soft hues,

distressed furniture and light color fabrics. This theme creates a vintage, homespun feel. Some decoration ideas include mason jars with burlap and lace, old picture frames and flowers. Usually, this type of wedding is located outside in a farm or country setting.

Holiday – Halloween, Christmas, New Year’s and Valentine’s Day are big holidays for wedding themes. Some other ideas include Mardi Gras and St. Patrick’s Day. These types of weddings can either happen on the holiday or near the day. Colors, invitations, decorations and venues are chosen based on the holiday. For example, a New Year’s wedding could be held on New Year’s Eve with gold, silver and white as the colors along with lots of sparkles.

Travel – Whisk your guests off to an imaginary destination at your wedding. If you and your fiancé love to travel and explore new places, this is the right theme for you. Invitations could resemble passports or plane tickets. Table numbers could be various destinations. A sense of travel can be incorporated into every aspect of your wedding.

Old Hollywood – Think 1950s, the Golden Age of Hollywood.

Decorations could include shades of red, gold, white and black as well as stars and vintage items. Arrive in style in a vintage car, and roll out the red carpet for you, your wedding party and guests. This wedding theme is full of old Hollywood charm and glamour.

Garden – A garden theme is one version of an outdoor wedding.

The venue could be a garden setting with decorations of flowers, trees and lots of colors. This theme is very diverse in the sense that gardens come in all styles. Also, this theme can be altered to include a fairytale atmosphere.

Time Periods – Have a favorite decade or time in history? Some theme ideas can be the 1920s, 1950s or 1970s, and the decade can be reflected through your invitations, decorations, cake and more. Take it a step further and have your guests come in period clothing.

Once you decide on your wedding theme, get creative and have fun.

Don’t be afraid to think outside of the box. Let your wedding theme reflect you and your fiancé, and the memories of your special day will always stay with you.

9 Things To Expect From Your Bridal Party

Congratulations! You’re engaged! And, you may have already chosen your bridal party or have an idea of whom you want to ask. We know your friends are eager to help you celebrate your special day and want to be there for you. We explored this topic in the November issue of Forsyth Woman Engaged!, and specifically, the “Nine Things Not to Expect from Your Bridal Party.” On the flipside, there are nine things you SHOULD expect from them!

5. You can expect them to get along with each other. Your bridal party may consist of your sorority sisters who may have already pledged undying love for one another…or they may not know each other at all! Make group plans to help them get to know each other. If there is a conflict between members of the bridal party, you can expect them to resolve those issues themselves and not let it affect your wedding plans.

1. You can expect their emotional support. If these friends are so important that they warrant a place in your wedding, then it’s quite reasonable to expect emotional support -- and not just for the wedding planning or wedding, but for your marriage throughout the years, as well. The friends you choose need to be those you can rely on in the years to come.

6. You can expect them to pay their own way. It’s an awkward situation, especially if you’re of the age when you’re really just getting started in life. But, it’s common knowledge that out-of-pocket costs go hand-inhand with being a bridesmaid. Be reasonable about how much things cost, but trust that if they can’t afford it, they will say so up front.

2. You can expect them to show up. When your friends agree to participate in your wedding, they are, in essence, agreeing to be a part of the experience. While some circumstances cannot be avoided (i.e., family emergencies, illness or work obligations), it’s not unreasonable to expect your bridesmaids to be there. As a courtesy to them, you should consult their schedules before scheduling shopping trips and luncheons.

3. You can expect them to be on time. Short of a catastrophic 15-carpile-up, you should expect your bridal party to arrive on time for agreed upon shopping trips, luncheons, parties and, of course, the wedding itself. If you have a chronically late friend you are considering, have a kind, but gentle conversation about punctuality sooner rather than later.

4. You can expect them to offer their help. Whether you take it or not is another matter. You may have hired a wedding planner to take care of the whole thing, or you may be the ultimate DIYer who wants to handle every detail. Either way, it’s the thought that counts, and when they offer to help, either reject or gratefully accept their kindness.

7. You can expect your bridal party to dance. Okay, don’t force someone with two left feet be a part of a choreographed dance-off. But, part of your bridesmaids’ responsibilities includes making sure guests at the reception are having fun! Getting a few people (eh-hem, your bridal party) started on the dance floor can help guests feel more comfortable about taking the floor themselves.

8. You can expect your bridesmaids to help you with your dress. Of course, there are some bridesmaids who are all about making sure they look better than the bride, but none of those people are your friends, right? Your bridesmaids should help you navigate your dress and your veil, even if it means helping you out during a trip to the bathroom.

9. Do expect your bridal party to be in a good mood. Emotional baggage and chipped shoulders need to be left at the door at every wedding-oriented event. While you can’t expect your bridesmaids’ whole world to revolve around you for a full year, it’s not unreasonable for you to expect a smile and a positive attitude at showers, bachelorette parties, luncheons, rehearsal and, of course, the wedding.

Yes, there is a checklist for all of your wedding plans, so why not for your jewelry? You have THE RING, and now you need to take care of the rest…wedding bands, bridal party gifts and what to wear on the big day.

Wedding Bands: It’s never too soon to start looking for your wedding bands. Mixed and alternative metals are very popular for men, with platinum being the most durable.

For women, the subtle and delicate look of vintage-inspired rings is in. Stones in these rings can be many different diamond cuts, or you can choose an elegant pave setting. A new trend is to add some color, like sapphires, emeralds or rubies to your traditional diamond band.

Most importantly, you’ll need to consider how and when you’ll wear your band. You might want a simpler gold band for every day and a diamond band to wear with your engagement ring. Couples often purchase the matching band when they buy their ring, but don’t worry if you didn’t. There are a multitude of diamond band styles, and anything you want can be custom-designed. The only limitation with custom design is your imagination.

Whatever you choose, you should plan on selecting your rings at least two to three months before the wedding to allow enough time for them to be created.

Jewelry For The Wedding Day: When selecting jewelry for the big day, the first thing you want to consider is matching the metal to your dress. If your gown is pure white, platinum and silver work best. While gold jewelry complements ivory and champagne gowns well, rose gold coordinates beautifully with blush gowns.

Now that you know what metal color to choose, let’s look at your dress style to figure out the rest. If you have a sweetheart or strapless gown, a choker is the go-to style to complete your look. The choker creates height, looks timeless with this neckline and will draw attention to your smile. For a V-neck style gown, either a pendant or choker necklace or a combination of both works well. A classic 14- to 16-inch choker is perfect, and if you have a family heirloom, you might want to consider adding a pendant (enhancer) to give it an updated look and lengthen the look if your neckline dips low.

Wearing your hair up? Sparkle with diamond studs and chandelier earrings, or go for classic pearls that have been reinvented and paired with new metals, diamonds and colored stones for an updated look.

Whatever you do, don’t get overwhelmed by all the choices out there. Diamonds, pearls, white gold or yellow, just remember to breathe and find the pieces that you’ll keep and cherish forever.

Choosing the Perfect Photographer

Set up a meeting (video chat if in-person isn’t an option), and talk it out. Look for a full-service photographer -- that means someone who will consult and assist in every part of your day and beyond, including providing options for high quality, archival products for your completed images.

Printing your images is ridiculously important, so make sure you put your hands on all the gorgeous products your photographer has to offer. Don’t be scared to ask questions during your time together. Ask to see the photography agreement, and look at all the “fine print.”

Also, get clarification on any policies that aren’t clear to you. I promise that not a single one of us will be insulted!

Knowing what to expect from your photographer is vital. Most importantly, ask to see a completed wedding gallery. Similar to looking at someone’s Instagram account -- it’s so easy to present a highlight reel, but when making a big decision for your wedding, you need to see it all.

WORK WITH YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER BEFORE THE WEDDING.

Once you have your photographer secured, it’s important to schedule your engagement session (yes, even if you have done one already). This is a huge opportunity to get to know your photographer and for them to get to know you better. Your session will help you lose that stage fright in front of the lens and learn how your photographer works, poses and communicates. This also gives you an idea of what to expect on your wedding day.

Bonus points for feeling more comfortable around your photographer and that big, scary camera of theirs! When you are relaxed, it truly shows in your photos and creates emotional and authentic images.

KEEP YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER IN THE LOOP.

Choosing a wedding photographer can certainly be overwhelming. It will be one of the most important decisions you make during the planning process -- after choosing the groom and the date that is! In a sea of options, how do you settle on one? When you find a photographer you love, where do you go from there? Here are a few necessary things to think about to help make your wedding photography process as painless it can be.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK.

Look at various styles and find one that speaks to you. Use the Internet (thank the good Lord for Pinterest) and other local resources (like Forsyth Woman Engaged!) to narrow that down to photographers in your general area. Don’t fret if the one you love isn’t local. Most photographers will travel! Ask your friends. Your married peeps have been through this and may have a great recommendation for you that matches your vision perfectly.

Chances are your wedding photographer will already ask, but make sure you put them in touch with your wedding planner and other vendors. Is there a list of specific “do’s and don’ts” or requests from your wedding venue? Photographers need that information, too! Your photographer will need to know your overall timeline, important people that are involved in your day and what moments are most important to you. It’s also good to check with your photographer before you (or your wedding planner) set up a timeline. Ask them how much time they’d ideally like for your formals (both before and after the wedding), and try to work with them on including it. If you have a specific timeline with no wiggle room, let them know that, too! Your photographer can help you prioritize and plan your photography to help tell a cohesive story while including all your most favorite moments. If anything changes, don’t hesitate to reach out to them -- communication is key!

The main goal of your wedding photographer is to move about your day seamlessly to tell your unique love story.

Finding a professional that meshes with you and your fiancé (i.e. finding your tribe) is a priority! Working with a prepared and experienced photographer will help you have authentic and beautiful images from your day while having an incredible time. After the wedding day glitter settles and you fall into the rhythm of married life, it will be so crucial to have this amazing experience preserved for lifetimes.

From Heart to Home: Buying Your First House

People buy homes at various stages throughout their lives, but possibly, the first home bought as a couple is the most exciting… and nerve wracking! Whether you’re purchasing a home before the wedding or after, when you buy your first home together, there’s a lot to be considered. After all, each of you have your own ideas of a dream house and, in a perfect world, your dreams are complementary. However, if you’re dreaming of a modern, movein ready house with sleek, contemporary vibes and he’s longing for a fixer-upper ranch, a bit of compromise may be required.

GET FIT…FINANCIALLY FIT

Are you financially ready to buy? Before you look, speak to a lender about getting pre-qualified. Knowing what you can afford before you start looking can save you a ton of potential disappointment. Buying a home, especially before officially tying the knot, is a tremendous responsibility. All financial history, obligations and credit scores have to be laid on the table. No secrets here and if there are any messy credit situations that need to be cleaned up, take care of those before making a huge purchase.

You don’t want to start your marriage with unnecessary debt anyway, but you certainly don’t want a bad situation to put you in a place where you can’t truly enjoy life. Remember – you own the house! It shouldn’t own you.

CREATING THE WISH LIST

Make a list of your must-haves. A large, open-concept kitchen may be at the top of your list, and he may want a spacious backyard that screams barbecue. What about a fourth bedroom? Do you need office space? Do you have a dog who needs a fenced in yard? Are you dreaming of hardwood floors? Do you love the idea of reading by the fireplace at night?

When you each identify your top five must-haves, you have a starting point. An experienced real estate agent can help direct you to a house you’ll both love and that will, hopefully, have most, if not all, your top wants.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION It ain’t just for Hollywood! Unless you’re new to the area, you may already have an idea of what community you want to be a part of. Budget, style and commute are all important factors to consider when choosing a location you can both be happy with.

Whatever you do, do your homework. Websites like MyLocalCrime.com can give you updates about crime activity in a neighborhood. Also, be sure to drive around at various times of day and throughout the week to get a feel for the community.

LONG-TERM GOALS When you purchase your first house, have an idea of your long-term plans. Is this house a starter home, until kids start to arrive? Or, are you thinking forever home? Having an idea in mind of your future can help guide your home-buying choices.

For instance, if you know up front that you plan to have a large family, a two-bedroom may not be the best long-term solution.

FIND YOUR AGENT A good agent is a great listener. You’re going to be spending a great deal of time communicating with the person you work with, and he or she needs to be an advocate for you!

Choose an agent who knows what you want, knows the area and has experience. An experienced real estate agent can help negotiate the purchase price and help steer you clear of potential (and expensive) train wrecks. Do your homework and find an agent that you feel comfortable with and whom you trust to look out for your needs and best interests.

As you take these next steps, enjoy the moment and savor the memories. There’s something very special about your first home together. After all, this is the home in which you’ll begin a lifetime of memories. Good luck, and may you find a home you can fall in love with together.

Bridal Fashion Trends

It is a wonderful time to be a bride! The current offerings of exquisite fabrics and beautiful silhouettes are amazing. From the designers’ creative energies to the fashion runways, it is always exciting to see which dresses will make their way into the bridal boutiques. In other words, which “trends” will have the staying power to become the new classics.

Initially, some may have thought that strapless gowns and fit to flair or modified trumpet silhouettes were a passing trend.

Interestingly, though, as some brides moved away from the traditional church weddings in the late 1900s, more women chose the strapless gown, and this trend has been going 20 years strong. In the 2010s, brides began choosing the fitted mermaid silhouettes which accented their curves.

These body-hugging gowns were offered in every material imaginable, from French laces to silk satin and silk organza, and some were embellished with beading and embroidery.

This trend also reigns supreme today.

In fashion, how does a look go from an emerging trend to an enduring classic style?

Perhaps, someone of notoriety makes a fashion statement by choosing something that is out of the mainstream. In 1840, Queen Victoria donned a white wedding gown during her wedding to Prince Albert.

Before this, brides wore dresses of color. The affluent took notice and this transformed into the new fashion bridal color of choice.

More recently, the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton and the revealing of her bridal gown on April 29th, 2011 created great anticipation. The bodice of her dress detailed a low V (plunging by royal standards) neckline and long lace sleeves. Designers took note and sleeves appeared all over the runways during Spring 2012 Bridal Fashion Week. The designers also took her V plunge neckline to new depths in recent bridal shows as Kate’s fashion statement continues to influence the bridal industry today.

Bridal designers draw their inspiration from a plethora of avenues. Many of them deliver on the promise of the unexpected. Some combine femininity and romance with an elegant edge.

Whether they are capturing that girly fun spirit or that sophisticated aesthetic, it is always nice to see emerging and established designers evolve and grow each season.

SEVERAL CURRENT TRENDS TO NOTE FOR 2017:

LOW BACKS...whether the dress is strapless, donning a sleeve or straps, the designers have created a look of a traditional wedding gown from the front while showing some skin in the back for that walk down the aisle.

LOW V FRONTS...just how low will they go?!

These plunging necklines seem to be taking center stage. Some bodices are a tad more conservative with subtle illusion gracing the front of the neckline.

BIG CASCADING BOWS...again, the focus is on the back. The designers are rolling out their version of the beautiful artistic bridal bow detail that sets the stage for a magnificent back.

SLEEVES ANYONE...the long sleeve trend continues (as ushered in by Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, a.k.a. Kate), but now it is billowy and airy. Let’s keep an eye out for the bell sleeve gracing the bridal runways which is now showing in the ready-to-wear market.

PRINCESS FOR A DAY...the resurgence of the ball gown is evident at the shows. Tiered and flowy skirts trimmed with cascading horsehair in varying widths and soft floral details graced the runways. Cascading ruffles were also making a showing.

SHEER FABRICS...where did the lining go, you might ask?! Varying degrees of sheerness (practically see-through) on the bodices and skirts did not leave much to the imagination. Flower petals and other organic embellishments were used to mask the delicate areas.

SHOWCASING THE SHOULDER...exposing lots of shoulder with the portrait-like neckline and the cold shoulder (sleeves with cut outs at the shoulder) drew a lot of attention. This statement follows a trend from the ready-to-wear runways. It is the nice midpoint between strapless and a fully covered bodice.

THE CINCHED WAIST...corseted bodices were paired with ball gowns as well as fitted and flowy skirts. The corsets were detailed with lace, embroidery and elaborate beading while the structure and boning of this fashion wonder showed off the waist.

SHOW THOSE CURVES...many designers love the draping effect of the beautiful crepe fabrics and other soft fabrics to show off their slip dress designs. Many detail a bateau neckline and are accented with lace or beading.

IT IS TIME TO SPARKLE...gowns featuring varying silhouettes are emerging with shiny metallic embroidered threading and embellishment covering the dress. Some glistened as though they were sprinkled with stardust throughout the fabric. As for accessories, bold shiny chokers and large statement earrings add that pop of bling to add sparkle to your day.

THE BLUSHING BRIDE...it seems that the nonwhite bridal color of choice for the runway is various shades of pink and one of the Pantone approved colors for this year. The designers created layers of texture and fabric to bring out the softness of this hue.

MORE COVERAGE ANYONE...capes in all lengths and shapes were paired with the gowns. The cropped versions were accented with whimsical trims and feathers.

THE FAIRY TALE ENDING...long veils with beautiful laces and soft floral details extended well beyond the dress to create a soft and romantic finish.

Time will tell which runway trends will make the walk down the aisle. It is a wonderful time to be a bride!

THINGS BRIDES NEED TO DO LEADING UP TO THEIR TRIAL/ BRIDAL PORTRAIT/WEDDING DAY FOR THE HAIR AND MAKEUP: 1. Facials – Get facials done every five to six weeks leading up to your wedding. It makes the biggest difference for your skin and makeup.

2. Brows – It’s so important to get your brows waxed or threaded (and any other facial hair treatment) a week before your portraits/wedding day.

3. Hair Color and Trim – Make sure to get your hair colored and trimmed a week or two before your portraits/wedding.

4. Water – Drink plenty of water! It keeps your skin hydrated and makes the biggest difference.

THINGS TO DO TO PREPARE FOR YOUR TRIAL RUN: 1. Clean Hair – It’s such a misconception that stylists like dirty hair to

work with. So, please come with clean hair to your trial. Do not flat iron it beforehand, or your curl will not take well.

2. Exfoliate – Be sure to exfoliate your face a few days before your trial, and apply moisturizer before your makeup trial.

But...keep in mind that your save the date or wedding invitation will be the first glimpse your guests will see of the upcoming wedding festivities. Your guests will appreciate you making the investment to spend a few minutes with a local printer. It’s well worth the extra effort! Here’s why: • At a local print shop, you will meet directly with the graphic designer who will create your printed items. Working with a local graphic designer for all of the items in your wedding suite will ensure that all of the components convey a consistent design concept.

• Planning your wedding suite with a local professional will ensure nothing is missed, and each piece reflects your specific needs and style. A professional also can provide advice on stationery etiquette, mailing times, who to send what, etc.

• Individual attention and service are nowhere to be found online!

You just won’t get it from online companies or Etsy downloads.

You want it to be just right, but unless you have graphic design skills, that will be difficult to achieve. Wedding Cake/Dessert Trends CHRISTINA’S DESSERTERY

In the midst of all the planning you will do for your wedding day, one item is easy to check off your to-do list – the dessert! Most bakeries and cake chefs will offer tastings, so you can decide exactly what flavors will suit your needs for the big day. While beautiful, classic, multi-tiered cakes will always be crowd-pleasers, there are other more trendy options available to couples that want to add a little pizzazz to the celebration!

Chocolate Bar – Gather some clear glass jars, vases or anything

else with a lot of room to fill with your favorite, unwrapped candies.

Dress up the containers with ribbon and include description cards that read “Chocolate Caramel Cookie Delights” for Twix Bars or “Chocolate Peanut Butter Dreams” for Reese’s Cups. Include cute bags designed to reflect your new monogram or a photo for guests to make their selections. These can also be used as favors!

Unique Cake Ingredients – This is especially fun if your

Beginning the process of choosing your wedding venue can seem like a very daunting task indeed! It doesn’t have to be. With just a little planning and some honest conversation before you begin, it can actually be a blast!

Before you get a crush on that castle, barn or meadow you saw in a magazine, it is imperative that you talk about the B-word.

Budget. Whether it’s a cost that you and your fiancé will share or if you have parents ready to write the check, the best way to avoid disappointment down the road is to get everyone on the same page right up front.

And, take it one step further. Is the number suggested as your venue budget meant to include the food and beverage or just the venue space? Is it meant to include tables, chairs and linens? For example, you might

hear a budget number for your reception of $3,000 and think you’re doomed to being in your backyard with hot dogs and hamburgers for dinner! Yet, if that number is what is offered for your venue space only with the understanding that your food and beverage budget is another $20,000 on top of that, then the way that you shop for your venue will change!

With that pesky budget conversation out of the way, you can now move forward with narrowing your venue search. Now, you can go to your Pinterest board and start reaching out to your dream locations for more information. Most venues will not list their pricing on their websites because they want the opportunity to talk to you and to customize the ideal package for your needs. Do not hesitate to call or e-mail multiple venues to ask for their package details. Some of the information that you receive will help to educate you on what questions you should be asking when you visit.

As you receive package and pricing information from various venues, you can start to see how each venue fits into your Top 8 List of “Need to Knows.”

Please keep in mind that this is a much-abbreviated list of questions that can serve as a jumping off point for your venue research. You can find about 10,000 venue shopping checklists online that cover everything from pets in the ceremony to hot air balloon departures!

On our list, the number 8 question is truly one of the most important! With so many clever and “outside the box” ways to get married today, the styles of venues can be both exciting and a bit overwhelming. But, just because your cousin had her dream wedding onboard a sailboat, doesn’t mean that you should. Be careful not to get caught up in a theme or décor style that doesn’t suit the two of you. Twentyfive years from now, you want to be able to look back at your wedding album with delight, not regrets! 5 Clever Ideas You’ll Want to Include In Your Wedding

When it comes to planning a wedding, the list of possibilities seems both endless and overwhelming. (Hello, Pinterest. We’re talking to you!) With the seemingly never-ending to-do list and must-haves, it can be hard to choose from the fun, creative ideas.

However, we’ve found a few that are simply not to be missed!

Check out what we consider to be the top five clever ideas you’ll definitely want to include in your wedding!

1. Don’t Take My Drink Coasters: These coasters break from

tradition and are placed on TOP of drinking glasses, not under.

With the full caption – they send an important message: Don’t take my drink, I’m dancing! This low-cost little tool also helps keep your bar budget under control…letting those who would otherwise toss a half-full drink away know that your guest isn’t quite finished! Add a few Sharpies to the table and make sure your coasters are designed with a line for names, too. That way, your guests know they are returning to the right glass!

2. Mom’s First Look: The trend of a first look for the groom has

grown in popularity over the last few years, but what about a first look for Mom? Mothers are, understandably, very emotional about seeing their daughters in a wedding gown. While she may have previously gone gown shopping with you, have your photographer capture her expression as she takes a first look at you, her pride and joy, fully made up in your bridal gown.

3. Invisible Ink on RSVP Cards: We recently heard of a bride

who failed to include a name line on her RSVP cards, which meant, she might have a head count, but she had no idea who was coming! Even if you remember that all-important line, you may have guests with such messy handwriting, you can’t read it anyway! A number, written in invisible ink, and correlated to your guest list, can help absolve any questions about who can or cannot make it to your big day! Make sure you remember to have a black light flashlight to read your hidden mark!

4. Include a list of “emergency numbers” for your out-of-town guests: Few things are as frustrating to anyone

planning a big event as getting a last minute phone call from someone asking for directions or what time the event starts.

You magnify that frustration by a thousand when the recipient of that phone call is the bride, and it’s the morning of the wedding (yes, I am speaking from a voice of experience!) In your out-oftown invitations, include a list of “emergency numbers” with a small note that explains that if they have questions on the day of the wedding, they may call one of the numbers listed for help. Make sure you line up two or three friends who are willing to help and make sure they know all the details.

5. Takeaway Cake Boxes: Chances are good you’re going to

end up with a lot of cake at the end of the night; your guests may be too full from dinner or too distracted by that awesome band you hired to keep them on the dance floor. Unless you want to eat cake for a month, make sure you invest in some cute takeaway boxes so all that leftover cake can be boxed up and taken home to be enjoyed by your guests.

Any of these ideas are a low or no-cost addition to your wedding that will help keep your day running smoothly and ensure you have as great a time as your guests!

Throughout the wedding planning process, brides-to-be are posed with many questions. From guest count to table linen choices and all of the details in between, there are numerous decisions to be made leading up to the big day.

But, how often do you stop and think about social media and its big question -- to post or not to post?

With so much of the world today revolving around social media, it seems easier than ever to have the latest news and updates at your fingertips. From Pinterest boards to wedding blogs and community forums, wedding inspiration and resources can make planning your big day easier with just a few clicks. But, despite the numerous outlets available, your social media accounts come into play as, now, most of our personal life events are on display for the world to view. And, at what point do the traditional wedding events become trickier situations when our social media outlets are involved? In the modern day of technology, it’s important to embrace the fun ways social media can enhance your wedding experience while keeping the traditions that are here to stay.

STILL, SEND OUT TRADITIONAL INVITATIONS.

While a Facebook invitation may be a more cost-effective alternative, a paper invitation keeps your wedding feeling like the special occasion that it is! Not to mention everyone loves a beautiful envelope in their mailbox every now and then. Experiment with creative designs, colors and fonts to let your personality or theme shine without losing this traditional keepsake.

DON’T REPLACE THE HANDWRITTEN “THANK YOU” NOTE.

Shortly after you return from your honeymoon, send out handwritten “thank you” notes and get to enjoy those new gifts in a hurry. A warm, heartfelt message on a piece of postage may require a little bit more time but is better received versus a general Facebook status or a quick text message.

From your budget to gifts and even the sometimes unavoidable drama, keep those details under wraps. Negative opinions on your bridal party, family or vendors may ruin relationships along the way, and things may not translate correctly over social media. Keep in mind that the end goal is to get married to the one you love the most despite the hiccups that may come along the way.

COMMUNICATE YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA WISHES TO YOUR GUESTS.

Don’t be afraid to politely ask your guests to keep social sharing at a minimum if that is your wish as a couple. This is a time where it is okay to be selfish! A wedding website or your ceremony program offer a great opportunity to explain to guests how you want them to be present with you during all the wedding festivities.

BE PRESENT ON YOUR WEDDING DAY.

Wedding Party Gifts

Before the mountain of presents arrives for you and your future spouse, think about what you would like to give to your bridal party and all those who will help to make your big day one of the biggest of your life. Not everyone thinks about their parents when it comes to wedding “thank you” gifts, but for those who do, it can mean so much to the people who helped you organize and pay for your wedding and the events leading up to it.

For those who have been in wedding parties before, the cliché wedding gifts are to be expected.

Been a bridesmaid more than once? How many monogrammed items do you have now? Taken a few trips down the aisle as a groomsman? How many monogrammed pens or flasks do you have now?

The gifts can certainly fall into a rut of predictable.

There are so many sites that boast about wedding party gifts, and most of the time, they fall far short of extraordinary or memorable.

Nowhere does it say that bridal party gifts have to be the same – why not get something different for each of your attendants? Maybe something personal that signifies your relationship or something meaningful for the two of you?

Ideally, these gifts will be ones that your friends and loved ones will hold on to for a while and cherish. You don’t want to get gift cards or anything impersonal that will be used and forgotten. Think about their personalities. You don’t want to get monogrammed beer steins for a groomsmen who is a wine enthusiast or dangly jewelry for your tomboy bridesmaid.

Here are a few ideas based on some unique personalities: • For the friend who loves to travel – think about a nice bag or personalized passport holder.

• For the friend who loves to entertain – think about a funky tray or marble wine bottle holder.

• For the friend who loves to go out – think about a beautiful, handmade necklace or pair of earrings (you can find lots of unique pieces on Etsy).

• For the friend who loves to stay in – think about a cozy, luxurious blanket or personalized wine glasses and a nice bottle of wine.

• For the friend who is impossible to shop for – think of asking her family and other friends for suggestions! Maybe she loves coffee and would enjoy a monogrammed coffee press, or lives in an area that lends itself to a certain hobby or activity and could use a few accessories she would enjoy.

Whatever you do, try to make it something meaningful for each person. Your friends and family have put a lot of time, effort and money into making your wedding as special as you have dreamed it to be – make sure you thank them appropriately.

This can certainly be hard when it comes to finding the perfect gifts for your parents. This is also an area where you can think a little more outside the box. Depending on your budget for gifts, consider a weekend getaway at a nice hotel or bed and breakfast to relax after all the wedding stress is behind them. Finances a little tighter?

Maybe a massage for your mom or a round of golf for your dad would be better! No one knows your family better than you, so do a little searching online, talk to other family and friends and figure out something great!

Also, remember that they will all love whatever you get them, and they will appreciate the thought that went into it. No one EXPECTS to receive a gift from the bride and groom, so make it an extra special surprise if you can!

Top 8 Rules of Etiquette

While your wedding is an expression of you and your intended’s unique personalities, there are some finite rules in the world of nuptials; namely, in the etiquette arena. I know -- it’s 2017. Things have changed. But, one thing that is constant is manners.

Following the rules of etiquette can make guests feel more comfortable and, also, alleviate confusion as well as hurt feelings.

Rule #1: Do not include your registry information on the

invitations. I know, it seems like an ideal place to include that kind of detail because you know Aunt Sally is going to ask, and you certainly want to receive gifts you’ll use and enjoy.

But, the fact is, your guests aren’t obligated to give you a gift.

Instead, make sure your parents and closest friends know, so they can answer the good ‘ole fashioned word-of-mouth way.

Or, include those details on your wedding website.

Rule #2: Do not invite someone to the shower and pre-

wedding parties if you don’t plan to invite him or her to the wedding. A loophole may be the workplace shower, especially if you work with a large team. However, if you only have a few co-workers, it’s more polite to simply invite them to the wedding, too.

Rule #3: Don’t leave your guests twiddling their thumbs.

If you have a gap between ceremony and reception, give your guests things to do. Whether it’s a cocktail hour or lawn games, make sure your guests have something to do between the two events.

Rule #4: Don’t have a cash bar. The bar gets expensive. However, your guests are just that -- guests. They shouldn’t be expected to pay for drinks at your wedding. Control bar costs by only offering a small selection of beer and wine, or opt for one or two signature cocktails instead.

Rule #5: Greet your guests. While many couples choose not to have a receiving line, going from table to table is a great way to welcome your guests to the wedding and thank them for coming.

Rule #6: Don’t talk about how much things cost. It’s tacky.

Everyone knows weddings are expensive. Enough said.

Rule #7: Don’t ask for cash. Since we’re on the topic of money, you cannot ask for cash in lieu of a gift.

Rule #8: Send hand-written “thank yous” within three months of the wedding or within two weeks of receiving a gift before or after the wedding. Shower your family and friends with gratitude after they’ve showered their hard-earned money on gifts for you!

Behind the Scenes of the Cover Shoot Our beautiful cover was the collective work of many partners, including Perfect Pair Events, who helped orchestrate the photo shoot from start to finish. The goal was to create a high fashion, clean line and stylized shoot that is reflective of the look that Forsyth Woman Engaged! readers and modern brides are seeking. To that end, the Forsyth Woman Engaged! and Perfect Pair Events teams collaborated with several industry experts to create this gorgeous cover!

First up – we had to choose our bride! Perfect Pair Events had previously worked with newlywed Meredith Naber when they helped organize her classic, romantic wedding in October, 2016. Meredith and her husband, Jeremy, were a dream to work with and they were excited to introduce this gorgeous new bride to Forsyth Woman Engaged!

Knowing that Meredith was going to look stunning in anything we dressed her in, we were thrilled to learn that Nitsa’s Apparel had a Hayley Paige gown, fresh off the runway, available for our cover shoot! This gown clearly lent itself to the sleek, high-end couture look we were hoping for!

We made arrangements for one of our favorite photographers, Kyle Duncan, to lead the shoot. Kyle is an exceptional photographer. He’s laid back with a precise eye for detail, and frankly – he has one of the most fun personalities you can imagine, especially when you need people to be relaxed and look their best in front of the camera! His charisma complemented Meredith’s beauty perfectly!

Aeracura Salon was on hand to handle Meredith’s updo, and the name of the game was elegance! Her romantic hairstyle was an accessory all on its own to that exquisite dress!

Triple J. Manor House, located in Mocksville, was the perfect backdrop for our shoot. This recently renovated property is sure to be the next local favorite for wedding venues!

When it comes to flowers, Dahlias Floral Design & Vintage Decor handled all the arrangements and table settings – from the elegant greenery to the vintage china. The owner, Allison Dahl, was a great sport, taking on this project on February 13th – the day before Valentine’s Day! But, always the expert, she provided stunning arrangements that were flawless!

The beautiful place settings were accented with elegant and stylish menus provided by Nu expression!

FOR THE COUPLE: • Announce the news to family first, then friends!

• Pick the date and time.

• Organize the guest list.
