Ask the Experts This issue’s 'Ask the Experts’ column is answered by Kimberly Williams of Weddings by the Vine whose ad can be found on page 11.

I

am planning a wedding on a very small budget but it feels like everything costs 10 times what I budgeted. There's no way I can stay on track. I want the wedding to be beautiful without going into debt. Help!

First, congratulations on not wanting to take on debt to cover your wedding! Below are numerous ways to decrease your costs:

• Decide on your top three must-have elements and then go with less expensive vendors for the other items, and/or decide if there is anything that you can do without • Choose to have the wedding at your parents’ home, a park or a museum, all of which are less than traditional venues • DIY items - invitations/table numbers/favors/place cards - you can take classes at local craft stores to ensure that they turn out really nice • Hire students from the music department at a local college to play at your ceremony • Get married on any day other than Saturday think about the possibility of a brunch wedding on a Sunday and you could save on the venue, the DJ and alcohol costs Good luck!

have five bridesmaids, but my groom only has three people he wants to include. Will it look awkward if our bridal party isn't even?

Traditionally, it’s best to have an equal number of attendants on both sides to balance out the processional/recessional.

Current trends, however, have shifted towards personalizing the ceremony, so an uneven number will be fine. It’s better to include the people that you really care for at your wedding instead of just filling in with extras. As far as the processional, have all the groomsmen walk in together and then for the recessional, the two groomsmen can be escorted by the additional bridesmaids, two bridesmaids to each groomsmen. Just a thought, but how unique!

The Wedding Checklist

O

nce you’ve chosen the date, the following serves as a general guideline for all the todo’s as you count down to your wedding day!

10 – 12 months from the date • Announce your engagement to your parents, family, and friends. Update your Facebook status to “Engaged.”

• Think about your overall theme – are you dreaming of a rustic, country-style wedding or a posh, sophisticated event? Do you dream of a traditional ceremony or are you looking for outside-the-box wedding ideas?

• Start working on your guest list.

• Pick the time of day / night for the wedding.

• Secure a church and / or reception venue.

• Choose your bridal party.

• Determine your wedding budget.

• Hire a wedding planner.

• Make a list of vendors (florists, caterers, musicians, etc.) and begin scheduling appointments.

8 – 10 months from the date • Begin shopping for a wedding dress (be sure to budget for alterations and undergarments).

• Shop and select bridesmaid dresses.

• Sign contracts and make initial deposits to reserve vendors for the big day.

• Start thinking about a honeymoon destination and work on travel plans.

• Have engagement pictures taken.

4 – 7 months from the date • Send ‘save the date’ notices to let guests know the date, time, and location of the wedding.

• Begin planning the rehearsal dinner.

• Schedule appointments for haircuts, color, wedding-day styling, manicures, pedicures, massages, and other beauty treatments.

• Register for gifts.

• Coordinate wedding transportation.

• Select and order attire for the groom and groomsmen.

• Purchase the wedding rings.

• Reserve a block of rooms at a local hotel for out of town guests.

• Buy wedding-party gifts.

• Decide on and order wedding favors.

2 – 3 months from the date • Discuss photography wants with the photographer.

• Discuss the menu with the caterer.

• Meet with your wedding officiate to discuss ceremony details.

• Write your vows, if you choose to write your own.

• Mail the wedding invitations.

• Apply for marriage license up to 60 days prior to the wedding date.

1 month from the date • Schedule a final gown fitting.

• Confirm that your bridesmaids and groomsmen have everything they need and are aware of the schedule of events.

• Confirm arrival and delivery times from all of your vendors.

• Have your wedding program printed.

• Create welcome bags for your out-of-town guests and have them delivered to the hotel.

• Write thank you notes as you receive gifts.

• Confirm attendance of guests who have not RSVP’d.

• Provide caterer with the final head count.

Day of the wedding • Relax and enjoy your special day!

groom-to-be’s cavalier—or downright dismissive—attitude toward wedding planning is the stuff of legend…and of cliché. Never fear, imminent brides, here are three ways to get him excited.

• Make wedding planning a competition.

Guys are hard-wired to compete. If they could wager about how long it takes carbonated soda to go flat at room temperature, then they would do it.

Don’t focus on china patterns and floral arrangements. Focus on which one of you will choose the arrangements and patterns.

Be sure to include money or bragging rights.

• Involve food. Make sure he understands wedding planning isn’t just about color coordination. It also involves lots of food and food sampling. To get him extra excited, float the idea of a chocolate fountain.

• Make it foreplay. Guys are easy. They’ll do anything if they think it’s foreplay. Wear something sexy as you debate the relative merits of peonies and ranunculuses. Focus on delightful post-peony possibilities. His focus will be laser-like because he’s got his, um, eyes on the prize.

Creative Ways to Ask Your Bridal Party

I

recently got an adorable card in the mail shaped as a bridesmaid with the words “Will you be my Bridesmaid?!” written inside. It was SUCH a cool way to ask, and so much more thoughtful than a phone call or text message. This is an important job; so show your bridesmaids just how much you want them to be a part of your big day by asking in a big way!

• Mail a small gift box with bridesmaid trinkets like tissues and lip-gloss with a note personally asking them to be part of your wedding.

• If you know the answer will be “yes,” go ahead and send a small bridesmaid gift, like earrings to wear on the big day, along with a note.

• Take your chosen bridesmaids to dinner…together or separately, and have a small cake, cookie or dessert of any kind decorated with the big question.

• Have a third party deliver something fun…even if it’s just a balloon at work with the question on a piece of paper inside with “pop me” written on the outside.

There are so many great ways to make this question special…so be creative, and make your bridesmaids feel extra special!

Questions to Ask Before Booking Your Venue

• How much is the deposit, and is it refundable? Is there a payment plan option?

• Does the space carry liability insurance?

here are many special moments during a wedding reception: the introduction of the couple, their first dance, toasts and the bouquet toss to name a few. One part everyone looks forward to is the cutting of the cake.

Although the design may be beautiful, it's the taste that your guests care about. So how do you choose a baker?

• Get recommendations from friends.

• Make sure the cake designer is within your budget.

• Set up appointments to visit the bakers on your short list.

• Ask about tastings.

• Ask to see examples of their designs.

• Can there be different flavors in each tier?

• Is there a delivery charge?

• Do they provide something for the cake to be displayed on?

• When will the cake be delivered to the reception site?

• Ask to see the cake the day before the wedding.

ow long have you been planning your wedding? Six months, a year, 18 months…longer? Why on Earth would you not want as much coverage as possible of a day that has consumed so much of your time to plan, so much of your money to pay for, and so much of your sanity to get through?

Videography is one of those services about which people who were married 10 years ago or more say “I wish we had been able to hire a videographer for our wedding.”

Kind of like our great-grandparents saying

“I wish we had cameras back in my day and hadn’t had to sit for a painter for eight hours.” That must have been rough.

Photography and videography is an investment, not in the sense that you will be able to liquidate the photo albums or DVDs later, but in the sense that it will be a valuable keepsake for your family for generations to come. here is so much to do to plan the perfect wedding, no matter what your perfect wedding entails! It is easy for some elements to get lost in the shuffle, so setting up your professionals early is crucial. There will always be things you can do yourself, but for details such as flower ordering and arranging, the experts will get it right every time. Do not assume your local grocery store will have the flowers you want in stock when you need them, and never assume you can do something just as well as someone else without practice.

Budgeting for flowers is not as tricky as it sounds. All it requires is meeting with your florist early to go over the costs for everything you will need, including bouquets, boutonnières, ceremony flowers and centerpieces.

Your florist can tell you what flowers will work best, which are more or less expensive, and how the time of year or even the time of day may affect the choices available. She can also help you stick to a set budget.

And if you are sticking with tradition in regards to who pays for what, remember that the groom’s family is responsible for the bride’s bouquet, as well as the boutonnières.

If using a florist, it is never too early to start planning for your flowers – florists can book up very early!

• S’Mores Bars.

Load up on ooey-gooey goodness with a station of graham crackers, chocolate bars, and marshmallows!

Make sure you have several open flames so that “s’more” can be made at once!

• Pancake Bars.

Offer your guests a variety of toppings, including whipped butters and a variety of jams, fruits, syrups, chocolate chips, and sprinkles.

One Year Later…The First Year of Wedding Bliss?

“The first year is the hardest!” I had never heard this famous quote prior to my wedding, but I seemed to hear over and over again AFTER I was just married. Umm… What happened to newlywed bliss?

My husband and I celebrated our one-year anniversary this past September 28th; we made it through the “hardest” year! Like every normal couple, we have our ups and downs.

Thank goodness for us, though, that the “ups” heavily outweighed the “downs.”

Living together takes some getting used to...who knew someone could despise a loud 74

electric toothbrush so badly? Luckily, we are both total neat freaks (color coded closets and all) who hate clutter but don’t mind a little dust.

The most challenging issues that we have had so far involve money. However, throughout the year we have figured out a way to manage our finances that works really well for us.

Now that we are about sixteen months into this marriage thing… I have to say, I LOVE being married.

We had a destination wedding, and the photographer we’d met during our first visit was no longer with the company when we went back for our wedding. While the other photographer was nice, he didn’t pay attention to details.
