Letter from the Editor As we send this issue off to the printer, my best friend of 15+ years is preparing to walk down the aisle, and I’m in the midst of writing my Maid of Honor toast (and attempting to keep the embarrassing yet hilarious high school stories to a minimum).

It brings me so much joy to be a part of her and her fiancé’s wedding – they have a mutual love and respect for one another that I admire so much. And, I’m thrilled at the fact that they chose to get married here in Winston-Salem so that I could show off all of the amazingly talented local vendors we have!

Congratulations Jill and Eric, I love you both so much!

While reviewing all of the amazing wedding content in this issue, I am reminded of God’s infinite love for each of us. While you are in the midst of all of the wedding planning craziness – don’t ever forget the importance of putting God at the foundation of your marriage. Maren Morris says it best in one of her new songs, “…the house don’t fall when the bones are good.”

We have an extra special article in this issue that is about the five love languages. This article is a must-read whether or not you’ve read Dr. Gary Chapman’s internationally known book.

Having your loved ones and most precious friends at your wedding is an absolute must when planning for your big day.

While including family and friends in your bridal party is naturally going to happen, there can only be so many people standing up beside the bride and groom when it comes down to it! Yet, that often leaves out some very important people who have shown you love and support that you’d like to have play a part in your wedding.

So, how do you include those special people in your life who mean so much?

They may not be standing by your side in matching dresses or suits, but there are plenty of opportunities to have them join the festivities.

Finding a way to showcase the talents of some of your guests can not only provide an opportunity to bring some personality to your ceremony, but can help make someone feel important, as well. Think of who you and your groom-to-be know that has a special talent that would fit into your needs. Maybe your aunt has played the piano for most of her life or your childhood best friend’s father is a pastor?

Here are a few different ways to invite someone special to be part of your day: • Sing a meaningful song • Lead everyone in a special prayer • Read a passage of scripture • Perform a piece of music • Recite a poem or excerpt from a book • Design or sew something for the bride to wear • Invite them to serve as an usher

Experience is a word that gets thrown around a lot in the wedding industry.

And, with good reason! When you turn over any portion of your most important celebration to a professional, you want to know that they have the acumen, temperament and professionalism that comes with extensive experience.

Here in the Triad, you would be hardpressed to find a team with more experience than Gidley + Schafer!

Born and raised in North Carolina, Lucy Gidley’s event experience spans decades. This includes her work at the Adam’s Mark hotel in downtown Winston-Salem, her 10+ years as Director of Catering for Salem College and, most recently, Director of Catering for Bermuda Run Country Club. Lucy has been instrumental in more successful wedding events than a person can count.

As an active club member and longstanding community volunteer, Christy is that one person that everyone calls on for help managing events large and small! Christy is just as passionate when planning a small, private dinner as she is a fundraising gala or women’s club event. And, with her experience in television and as a director of marketing and public relations, she’s no stranger to quick thinking and creative solutions!

Fate stepped in when, in the fall of 2016, Christy began planning a wedding that she was thrilled about but also knew she would want assistance with – her daughter’s! Knowing Lucy from the many events they collaborated on in the past, Christy pulled Lucy in as the coordinator who would see the vision through and allow Christy to be the mother-of-the-bride on the wedding day.

Looking back on the planning of that wedding event, they both say now that they “just clicked” and when it was over they looked at each other and said “we need to do this!” Thus, in the summer of 2017, Gidley + Schafer Events was born!

When asked what their inspiration was for melding their vast professional backgrounds into a wedding and event planning business, they said

their friendship. Right from the start, they recognized each other’s gifts and strengths and how well they complemented each other. Lucy and Christy knew that those strengths, combined with their talents and passion for seamless events, would be the ideal formula to offer a new bride, her family or anyone planning an event.

Gidley + Schafer – that’s Gidley plus Schafer – were called upon for their first official wedding event for a June 2018 celebration at The Sky Retreat in the mountains of North Carolina. They both agreed that many brides who think they are going to manage all the planning and execution themselves don’t know what they’re getting into.

Lucy and Christy enjoy being able to take it on, allowing the bride and her family to enjoy the planning experience as much as the day, while Gidley + Schafer Events handles every finite detail behind the scenes.

When not knee deep in décor procurement, finalizing menus or sourcing floral arrangements, you’ll find Christy entertaining friends and family or in the kitchen, honing her culinary skills while Lucy plans her next trip as she has a deep love of travel and is happy to go anywhere, any time!

However, some of what you will hear may sound like a foreign language to you. And, with good reason! Most of us don’t ever talk about a celebration on the scale of a wedding until it’s our actual wedding, and before you know it, your head is swimming with new lingo and verbiage that you’re supposed to use to make informed decisions.

To that end, the following is a succinct guide to some of the furniture that you are likely to encounter during your wedding planning.

GARDEN CHAIR: Don’t let the name deceive you. This char is used indoors and outdoors. Most popular in white, it is also offered in black and something called “fruitwood” which is fancy talk for brown. Material – Resin or wood.

HI-BOY/BISTRO/COCKTAIL/PEDESTAL: So many names, so many possibilities! Whether you choose 30”, 32” or 36”, these small but mighty tables are a great addition to your event design! Primarily used during cocktail or social hours, with or without barheight chairs, as a place to sit your beverage while you nosh. If you’re lucky to enough to have access to an adjustable cocktail table, you can really get creative! Adjustable means they might be low enough to place chairs around for guests to sit at dining height or they can be higher for true pub-style height.

And that in-between level? Perfect for wedding cake or a guest book. How about creating a trio with one of each height and placing them tightly together for a dessert vignette?

FARM TABLE: The name says it all. This is typically a rustic, wooden table with heavy legs and a cross beam underneath. Used in small groups or as a statement piece, a farm table rarely needs a linen and can be striking in the middle of a table grouping with a runner, low florals and all the candlesticks you can get your hands on! Very few venues provide them, so this is a rental item, available now from most event rental companies.

STACK CHAIR: Think banquet hall.

Cushioned either with pleather or fabric, this is an all-purpose, restaurant style chair that may or may not fit into something as formal as a wedding reception…especially if the seat color clashes with your wedding colors. If chairs are not visible during your site visit, ask to see them! Material – Metal & fabric.

GHOST CHAIR: A relatively new offering that’s becoming more available, the ghost chair is quite frankly one of the most dramatic pieces to hit the wedding scene in years! Looking for a wedding venue can be a daunting task. And, if you are looking for something simple that you can really make your own, that gets even more complicated. Some brides really want a blank canvas, a space that they can transform to make it uniquely theirs. If that is what you are looking for, The Atrium at the Elks Lodge in Winston-Salem might just be exactly what you want for your big day!

HISTORY OF THE ELKS AND THEIR IMPACT IN OUR COMMUNITY

This past year, the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks celebrated 150 years of service in the USA. They have been a part of Winston-Salem for 120 years. Their presence in our community is strong and focuses on community impact. The causes closest to the organization include helping veterans, providing college scholarships to youth and supporting Camp Carefree, a week-long camp for children with chronic illnesses. Exalted Ruler Connie Shoaf is overjoyed by the work they are doing in this community. “We love working in this community to provide students with scholarships, helping to fulfill the needs of veterans and providing a great camp experience for chronically ill children. We enjoy the fellowship of the organization as well, but it means so much more that we are able to truly make a difference in the community that we love.” All of the members of Elks Lodge #449 take great pride in raising money to support these important causes, giving their time to make an impact and being a pillar of charity in this community.

The local lodge was built just eight years ago, and, at that time, they moved from their previous location off of Silas Creek Parkway. It provides a space for members to enjoy fellowship and entertainment year-round, and they open their relaxing pool in the warmer months. The upstairs portion of the lodge, known as The Atrium, was built to provide an available space for the public to rent for private events and weddings.

A Fresh Take on an Old Tradition:

Rehearsal Dinners

One would think that planning a wedding ceremony and reception, complete with venue selection, dresses, flowers, musicians, specialty cocktails, party favors and puppies as ring bearers would be enough! And yet, there is still another event, complete with its own list of “must-dos” that tradition says you need to tack on to the same weekend – the rehearsal dinner!

Whose idea was this anyway? After much research into the origin of the rehearsal dinner, the answer seems to be a definitive “who knows?!” They aren’t based in religious practices, and they seem to be almost exclusively American.

Well, except for the time when it was believed that the Druids threw big, loud parties on the eve of matrimony to ward off any evil spirits that were lurking about. Other than that, they seem to have developed organically over the years as an expected dinner event, hosted by the groom’s parents, with a more casual feel than the wedding but with more toasts!

So, perhaps with such a murky history, it won’t offend anyone if we start to change the way the rehearsal dinner – and even the actual ceremony rehearsal – is conducted! Does the ceremony rehearsal absolutely have to happen the day before the wedding in the exact same location of the ceremony?

Can’t you and your bridal party practice smiling and walking gracefully in a straight line together pretty much anywhere?

And, why not plan your rehearsal and rehearsal party for the weekend before the wedding, when emotions aren’t running quite as high yet and everyone’s stress level is manageable?

Yes, some out-of-towners might not be included, but you can bring them up to speed on their role, and you have freed up an entire evening to spend with them the night before the shindig.

As for the usual take on the sit-down dinner at a local restaurant or country club, why not think outside the box and have some fun with this?

• Fortunate enough to have a body of water nearby? How about a relaxing and fun dinner cruise? Imagine the romantic feel of toasting your most beloved folks as the sun sets over the water.

• Keep it moving with a restaurant or pub crawl!

Start at the local eatery where you met over a pile of nachos and have a nibble. Then, move to your favorite pasta joint for dinner before concluding the night at Krispy Kreme for dessert!

• Were some of your first dates spent at Trivia Night? Then why can’t your rehearsal party be “Game Night?” At someone’s home or a casual venue, get out the Trivial Pursuit, Jenga and Pictionary, and enjoy the laughs!

Order pizza and wings, and you’ve created a rehearsal dinner that won’t soon be forgotten.

• If you’re convinced that your rehearsal and dinner don’t have to be the night before the wedding, consider a brunch! Hosting your bridal party and family on the Sunday prior to your celebration can be magical. And, who doesn’t love a make-your-own-waffle station paired with mimosas?

There are so many traditions that help to make a wedding celebration truly special and, while the rules have become somewhat fluid for wedding days too, you probably want to stick to the wellproven formulas. However, how you rehearse your ceremony and then celebrate with that “night before” excitement and energy is totally up to you! Hopefully, these ideas will stir your creative juices, and you’ll be sending us pictures of your unforgettable rehearsal celebration!

Most brides have been dreaming of their wedding gown since they were little girls. You want it to be perfect.

And, it’s not just about getting the right dress; it’s about being in the right place and having the right experience while you shop for the dress. Laced with Grace Bridal Boutique in Mocksville is waiting to give you the experience you are looking for and help you find the dress of your dreams.

Much like her bridal clients that have been dreaming of their wedding for years, owner Jaclyn Wisecarver has been dreaming of owning her own bridal boutique since she was a little girl. Growing up in Mocksville, she walked past the storefronts and dreamt about her future store. She loved fashion and always envisioned herself as a business owner. This would all come to fruition years later right in downtown Mocksville.

In 2017, Jaclyn graduated from Liberty University where she majored in fashion merchandising and minored in business. During her time there, she thought she would be more suited to work in boutique fashion and that maybe bridal was not the right fit. She ended up getting an internship at a bridal store in Lynchburg, and she was reminded of why she loved bridal so much.

She was reassured that this was the business for her. Just a few months after she graduated, with the help of her family, she moved back to her hometown in November and opened Laced with Grace Bridal Boutique in January of 2018.

Davie County needed a bridal shop.

The county has experienced an explosion of bridal venues in the last few years, but it has been more than 24 years since there has been anything even resembling a bridal shop. And, people are excited. She has had brides come from a one-hour driving radius around the shop. This includes bigger cities like Statesville, Winston-Salem, Greensboro, Salisbury, Charlotte and more. Her up-to-date and inspiring Instagram is what draws a lot of brides in. She is able to showcase what the store has to offer as well as share her love of all things bridal and fabric related.

It is important to Jaclyn that she is able to handpick every gown that comes into the shop. “I want to touch and feel each dress to evaluate the quality of the fabric and construction,” she said. “Comfort is another factor I take very seriously.

Dresses for each season need to have a different weight to make sure the bride can move in the dress and feel at ease. Everyone has a different idea of what they are looking for, so I want every bride to feel represented in this boutique, and I take great care to do that.” Jaclyn is also very picky about designers. She tries to carry affordable designers that use quality fabrics that can be easily altered.

This season she is carrying Rebecca Ingram, Justin Alexander and Lillian West. Laced with Grace has styles in sizes 4-28. She has also partnered with Threads Custom Alterations and Design which is just two doors down.

This allows brides the convenience of having their dresses altered close to the boutique, and, during appointments, the seamstress can evaluate the dress for alteration needs prior to purchase.

When you choose Laced with Grace Bridal Boutique, you will get a personal touch. When a bride comes to look for her dress, she has the option to have the store to herself for a private consultation. Jaclyn loves to have a personal connection with her brides. She can take the time to slow down, connect with them and serve their needs in a personal way. You won’t find that at bigger bridal stores. You will never feel pushed to buy a dress that isn’t the one because she truly wants to help you find the dress that will make your special day perfect. You will know how sincere she is about that from the moment you meet her, and you will never feel disappointed in the first-class service you receive.

Wedding planning can equally be one of the happiest and one of the most stressful times in our adult lives. Towards the end of it all, however, we are awarded with a lovely bridal shower that will suit our needs. But, let’s say you don’t want to be too conventional…you may have interests and visions that don’t align with what you’ve always seen from other people. That’s okay! Your wedding should exalt your true self and so should your bridal shower. Here are some creative bridal shower ideas to help you create something that will completely stand out and help you stay true to yourself.

An elegant tea. This is ideal for the classy, sophisticated bride. Scope out your local tea houses and look into reserving space for bridal shower events. Having a bridal tea will give you and your bridesmaids a calming, but refreshing experience right before your big day. This is a wonderful time to bond and de-stress with your bridesmaids, mother and flower girl (if you have one).

A spa day. Another day of relaxation with your bridesmaids.

This is the perfect opportunity for you, your bridesmaids and invited guests to get massages, facials, manicures and pedicures, and perhaps even some yoga and aromatherapy right before the ceremony. You may plan this event the week of your ceremony to make sure your digits are freshly done, your skin is glowing and your muscles are as relaxed as they can be before you walk down the aisle.

With so many items on your to-do list, scheduling a consultation with Robyn Goslen and her team of professionals to discuss your invitation needs makes perfect sense. The team at Gifts and Paper on Plaza has more than 20 years of experience in helping brides with their wedding needs, navigating the etiquette of different styles of weddings and the styles of paper products that complement the bride’s vision of her wedding day.

To get started, schedule an appointment with Robyn and the Gifts and Paper team to share your wedding vision. Typically, you should plan at least two hours for this consultation, which is free, to ensure that time has been set-aside especially for you. Drop-in visits are always welcome, as well. Much like consultants in wedding gown shops, the team wants to hear about what you’d like your wedding to look like – whether a traditional southern wedding, formal, outdoor, casual or something that’s uniquely you. Sharing your vision, including your budget expectations, helps the team guide you toward the invitations and other paper products that capture your idea day perfectly and takes the stress out of the decision-making process. “Our goal is to make sure what we create for the bride is exactly what she envisioned,” said Robyn. “The wording of the invitation is important; we provide guidance and options.

We also explain the printing process so that the bride has the time needed to proof the invitation thoroughly before printing begins.”

WHAT ARE TYPICAL PAPER NEEDS FOR A WEDDING? Save-the-Date Cards – These are generally mailed out six to eight

months before the wedding. The majority of these include a photo that serves as an introduction of the engaged couple. Basic information generally provided are the couple’s names, the wedding date, the location for the wedding (place, city, state or destination) and the personalized wedding website.

Wedding Invitations – These are mailed six to eight weeks before the wedding. Gifts and Paper on Plaza offers a variety of options, such as Crane or William Arthur, at price points for every budget. Working with a professional stationer allows the bride the benefit of not just seeing a design, but feeling the texture of the invitation samples and seeing what different print styles actually look like. A stamped response card is included in the invitation so that the bride knows the number of guests who will be attending the wedding.

Also included may be a reception card. These are generally used when the wedding and reception are in different locations. Otherwise, many invitations note at the bottom where within the facility the reception is being held.

“Thank You” Cards – These cards may be printed along with the invitation. Taking the time to thank guests for their wedding gifts with a handwritten note is a time-honored tradition. While traditionally brides have taken the responsibility of writing “thank you” cards, a joint effort is becoming a trend.

Simple Steps to Creating a Waste-Free Wedding

“How much waste will there be on my special day?” This isn’t exactly a question at the forefront of your mind when planning your wedding.

Although, the idea of being a more sustainable and environmentally friendly bride has definitely become much more mainstream, and, in 2019, even considered trendy. And, all within good reason!

According to the Green Bride Guide, “…an average wedding produces 400 pounds of garbage! With an estimated 2.5 million weddings per year, that is about one billion pounds of trash.” As the concept of waste-free weddings rises in popularity, they can not only make a positive impact on the environment but the budget of the bride and groom as well.

When you are checking things off your wedding to-do list, here are a few simple tips that make creating a waste-free wedding easier than you’d think:

EMBRACE SUSTAINABILITY & SECONDHAND

From decorations to dining, there are so many different options that can help gear your wedding toward making a better environmental footprint. One of the easiest ways to hone in on reducing waste is to think about the things you already have access to that can be reused for your big day! Upcycled centerpieces out of mason jars from your kitchen or vintage vases from your grandma can work beautifully. Have friends who were married in the last few years? See what might be available to borrow or upcycle into a new look for your wedding.

BOOK VENDORS AND VENUES WITH A SIMILAR MISSION

As you are finding the perfect venue to have your ceremony and reception, don’t be afraid to voice your desire to have your wedding be more sustainable or eco-friendly. Same thing for your florists, caterers, photographer and all other vendors. Creating conversation around what

they can offer and what processes they have in place that align with your goals is a great way to add confidence in your choices. Let your caterer know you don’t want any food waste, and see if they can help arrange drop off at a local food bank or have it used for compost. Check with your vendors to see if they mind using email for communication and online invoicing to avoid needless amounts of wasted paper.

LIMIT THE NUMBER OF DISPOSABLES THROUGHOUT EVENTS

While we’re talking specifically about weddings, there are so many other wedding-related events along the way that have the opportunity to increase sustainability while decreasing waste! Think about a way to limit disposables at celebrations like bachelor and bachelorette parties, bridal showers, rehearsal dinners and next day wedding brunches as well. Steer clear of paper or plastic plates, cups and utensils when able and swing towards reusable or eco-friendly where possible. Another option is to consider your decorations for these events and reduce onetime-use things like balloons and crepe paper that gets tossed at the end. Instead, you could use some beautifully potted succulents or other plants in your colors.

THINK ABOUT THE BIG PICTURE ESSENTIALS

It’s easy to get sucked into the mentality of “more is more” during wedding planning when the reality is that less really is more! Think about the things that matter most in making your day special and memorable, and cut out anything that doesn’t need to be there along the way to avoid extra expenses and waste. Something as simple as thinking long term when choosing what to add to your wedding registry can make a difference long term. Step one is to buy some multi-colored sticky notes, and have them handy when you sit down with FWE. When you see something you like, whether it’s a full-page advertisement for wedding jewelry or a chair style in the background that you simply must have at your reception, marking it with a sticky note will ensure that you come back to it later and won’t have to flip through dozens of pages trying to remember where you saw it!

You might think you’ll remember that you love these ideas in a few months when you start working on your décor plan and meeting floral designers, but by then, you will have seen so many ideas, they could get lost. So, you’ve been asked by your sister, best friend, mother or favorite cousin to be the maid of honor for her wedding? It’s a high honor to be chosen for such a role! You may be thinking, “But what all do I have to do?” There is a line of fun responsibilities that come with being the maid of honor. Also, if you’re a bride, perhaps this list will help you determine whom to choose as your maid of honor.

PLAN AND ORGANIZE BRIDAL SHOWER.

It is the maid of honor’s job to determine what her bride’s theme for the wedding is and possibly match that with the style of her bridal shower – that is, if it is the bride’s wish. The maid of honor helps find the perfect venue for the shower, gets the list of invitee’s names from the bride, chooses the food and decorations, and even hosts the shower.

THROW BACHELORETTE PARTY.

Are you a woman who knows how to plan a good time? If so, planning and throwing a bachelorette party may be a party itself. As the maid of honor, you will know what the bride wants and needs for a good time and will be entrusted to put it all together. Does she want to go out of town? Does she want a hotel room? Remember, the bride must be the main one who enjoys herself. So, if male dancers are not her speed, respect her wishes and don’t invest in one. Instead, save that money for something more practical such as games and good food!

If you have been asked to be a maid of honor, you are likely a natural leader. Maids of honor normally serve as one who keeps the fellow bridesmaids in order. If requested by the bride, she makes sure they have their dresses, shoes, jewelry and other needed details. The maid of honor may also be the one who communicates to the bridesmaids on behalf of the bride when she’s too busy. She will sometimes be the go-to person to get information

from in regards to the bride. If this is the case, the maid of honor must know what the bride requires of her bridesmaids. On the wedding day, she also makes sure the other bridesmaids are dressed with hair and makeup done in a timely manner.

Bring some matching flats to relax her aching feet! Does she want fresh kissing breath? Pack some strong peppermints. Whatever your bride will need on her big day, make sure she has it all in that kit…and keep it nearby!

HELPS THE BRIDE GET DRESSED & STAY CALM ON WEDDING DAY.

This is one of the most beautiful responsibilities of being the maid of honor – connecting with your bride and watching the magic come together for her, and you get to experience it up close! You must know how she puts on her dress in case she needs your help (and she likely will).

Tips on Tipping for Tippers

BY TABATHA RENEGAR As you begin to plan your wedding event, or even if your plans are underway, make time to budget accordingly for the gratuities that are customary for vendors who are about to make your dreams a reality. Yes, by the nature of the custom, tipping is optional. However, keep in mind all the hard work, time and passion that your vendors have poured into your event which often occurs behind the scenes, after hours and without them even telling you.

Below is a tipping guide for each service related to a typical wedding event and the appropriate time to present your token of appreciation. Of course, you can always make somebody’s day by tipping more than these suggested amounts if he or she has done something extraordinary that made your heart sing!

PHOTOGRAPHER/VIDEOGRAPHER

$100 each

TIMING: At the end of the event.

OFFICIANT

$50-100 for the officiant alone, depending on how much time they’ve spent with you pre-ceremony. Consider a $100-500 donation to the religious institution.

One exception to all of the above is that, traditionally, business owners of larger companies don’t get tipped – just their employees – but you can and should tip an owner when the service exceeds expectations. Small business owners should never be overlooked, since their businesses are often run by just one person.

This is just a sample of the most common areas of service involved in a wedding event. By all means, any other person that has played a part in making you, your guests and your family happy will appreciate a monetary token of your gratitude. Furthermore, tip or no tip, writing a “thank you” note to vendors who provided you with great service is always appreciated – as is leaving them positive reviews on wedding planning websites!

Tips from the B de and Her Wedding Planner for Prepa ng a Wedding When an Adverse Event is Expected on Your Big Day

About 10 days out from your wedding, if you start to hear about an adverse weather system approaching, we have provided a list of things to do that will make your life so much easier during this time:

STAY IN CONTACT WITH VENDORS. Either through a wedding planner or event coordinator. As soon as a possible adverse effect is noted around your wedding, have your coordinator reach out to all vendors (either traveling or local) to touch base.

If you are a bride flying solo, start a phone thread with all your vendors, so everyone knows any change in plans, this will save you time and energy!

ASK ABOUT GENERATORS.

TENTS DO NOT HOLD UP IN HIGH WINDS. Have a back-up plan if any of your wedding events require tents. If the winds (even coming off a shore-line coast system) are above a certain speed, the tent vendor will not release the tents for you to use and will probably cancel the order days prior to your wedding. Tent rentals are a liability, so tent rental companies will err on the side of caution and cancel your order to protect their property and ensure guest safely.

CONSIDER TRANSPORTATION SAFETY. Even if there is a lot of standing rain, some transportation companies will cancel your order if you have booked an antique get-away car, fun trolley traveling from another city or even a 50-person bus for all your guests.

Inquire about back-up options (limos, town cars, SUVs) which might be more durable with heavy rains and high winds.

Never too early to do this! If needed and early enough, you can possibly rent one for your event. Talk to your venue about power-outage options and possible “if all else fails” plans for each location of a wedding event.

TRY NOT TO STAY GLUED TO THE WEATHER CHANNEL.

You will pull your hair out trying to figure out what the exact weather is going to be on your wedding day. Try to keep a sense of normalcy by exercising, keeping busy and relaxing! Grab a coffee with a friend or have a movie night with your family during the few days prior to your wedding.

PHOTOGRAPHER KNOWS BEST.

If you were planning to have pictures outdoors, talk with your photographer beforehand about a perfect location indoors or a covered spot for family, wedding party and couple photos. The photographer could pick a location you might not have even thought of and actually like better! Do not scramble the day of the wedding to find a picture location with friends and family waiting.

DESIGNATE A SMALL GROUP OF PEOPLE TO CONTACT GUESTS.

The last thing the bride needs is guests reaching out to her on her wedding day. If a major change is made, have a dedicated person or small group of people to handle the incoming noise from guests and keep the bride’s stress level at bay.

EMBRACE THE WEATHER.

My husband and I made the best of it!

How Do You Say, “I Love You?”

Take a guess: What book by a Winston-Salem author has sold 12 million copies and been translated into 50 languages?

Give up? It’s The 5 Love Languages®

by Pastor Dr. Gary Chapman! Even if you haven’t read the book, you’ve probably heard of the five love languages. It’s now been 27 years since the original five love languages book was published. Back then, no one, not even Dr. Chapman, ever imagined the book would become such a runaway best-seller.

Why does this book resonate so deeply with so many people?

I decided to ask Dr. Chapman himself. He told me, “Our deepest emotional need is to feel loved by the significant people in our lives. If we feel loved by those people, life is beautiful. But if we feel, ‘my spouse doesn’t love me,’ or ‘my parents don’t love me,’ life begins to feel kind of dark.”

The five love languages were born when, after many years of marriage counseling, Dr. Chapman concluded that there are five ways people perceive emotional love. These five “love languages” are:

• Quality Time: Giving someone your undivided attention.

• Acts of Service: Doing things for another person to lighten their load, such as washing dishes or vacuuming.

• Physical Touch: Deliberate

touch such as a back rub or a kiss; incidental touch such as sitting close to a person on the sofa.

• Words of Affirmation: Compliments or words of appreciation, kindness or encouragement.

• Gifts: Giving a purchased,

found or handmade tangible token of love, or the intangible gift of your time.

Dr. Chapman says that each of us has one primary love language, one channel through which we hear “I love you” best. But – here’s the thing, and it’s a big thing – almost always, the person you marry does not perceive love in the same way you do. So, the key to making your spouse feel loved is learning to express love to them in their love language, not yours. This does not come naturally; just as it takes some work to learn to speak French or Mandarin, it takes practice to become “fluent” in your spouse’s love language.

Learning to express love in each other’s love language is a critical component of a happy marriage. Says Dr. Chapman, “If the emotional need for love is met, it’s much easier to work through conflicts and solve them. If we don’t feel loved, we’re far more likely to end up in arguments rather than looking for solutions.” That’s why it’s wise to learn the love language concept – that what makes one person feel loved does not make another person feel loved – before you say, “I do.”

Many engaged couples don’t realize that they will eventually come down off the emotional high of the “in love” experience. Dr. Chapman explained, “Many people think that if they’ve got the real thing, those feelings are going to last forever. But, the research is clear – the average is two years till they come down from that euphoric state.” At that point, he said, “…love has to become far more intentional because we’re not pushed along by those heavy,

euphoric feelings for each other. But, if you speak each other’s love language, when you come down off the high, you hardly miss it because you still feel loved. Once you identify and learn to speak your spouse’s primary love language, I believe that you will have discovered the key to a long-lasting, loving marriage.”

The Sweetest Ending

Whether you’re hosting a shower or providing small bites for your bridal party, it is always fun to have bridal-inspired refreshments to complement your big day! From something sweet to something to sip on, here are a few ideas to keep your festivities fun and refreshing.

SPARKLING RASPBERRY SHERBET PUNCH INGREDIENTS

1 container raspberry sherbet 1 can limeade concentrate 1, 2-liter Sprite or lemonlime soda 1, 64-ounce container of cran-apple juice 1 container fresh raspberries 1 ∕3 pineapple, cut into chunks

DIRECTIONS

1. In a punch bowl, combine limeade concentrate, cran-apple juice and 1∕3 of the Sprite.

Stir until all liquids are combined.

2. Add sherbet, raspberries and pineapple chunks.

Add in additional Sprite for extra bubbles, and serve.

Tip: The night before,

simply scoop sherbet and freeze in plastic-lined muffin tin. Add to your punch right before serving to have sherbet last longer throughout serving period.

MOSCATO STRAWBERRY LEMONADE INGREDIENTS

1 bottle pink Moscato wine 6 cups lemonade ¼ cup strawberry vodka Frozen strawberry slices Fresh lemon slices Fresh mint for garnish, if desired

DIRECTIONS

INDIVIDUAL SUGAR COOKIE FRUIT PIZZA INGREDIENTS

1 roll sugar cookie dough 1, 8-ounce cream cheese, softened 1 ∕3 cup sugar ½ teaspoon vanilla 2 kiwi fruit 1 cup halved or sliced strawberries ½ cup fresh blueberries ½ cup fresh raspberries ½ cup green grapes ½ cup apple jelly

1. Combine Moscato, lemonade, vodka, strawberries and lemon slices into pitcher.

Stir to combine thoroughly. Garnish with fresh mint, if desired.

DIRECTIONS

1. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Spray 12-inch pizza pan with cooking spray. Break cookie dough and press into pan evenly. Bake 12-16 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool completely.

2. In a small bowl, mix together cream cheese, sugar and vanilla. Spread mixture over cooled crust.

3. Arrange fruit over cream cheese mixture.

Stir jelly until smooth and spoon over cream cheese layer. Refrigerate until cooled, at least one hour. To serve, cut into wedges or squares.

Tip: Make individual pizzas by purchasing

premade sugar cookies or bake refrigerated dough according to the package. Follow all other directions, but layer fruit, cream cheese and jelly on each individual cookie.
