Keeping It Real
EVERY SINGLE ONE! So, do yourself a favor and begin this New Year well. Consider extending the gift to others, too!
Now that 2020 lives only in our rearview mirror, can somebody shout or dance or something?! We’ve all confronted real challenges and uncertainties on varying levels, but we’ve faced them, nonetheless. Here we are, stepping into a brandspanking new year. But “new” doesn’t fix things unless something “new” awakens in us.
I felt the Lord stirring me, just weeks ago, to help folks step into 2021 with daily devotions to supercharge Peopletheir purpose.feelworn down and worn out by this battle called “2020.” Every kind of crazy keeps crashing in on our hope. Chaos and confusion seem certain to trample our peace.
But hear me… while life feels shut down, God desires to wake something up in you! YES, YOU! His Word is everything you need to find your way through the fog. It positions you to flourish even in the mayhem, I promise! My new book, Awaken My Soul: 31 Devotions to Supercharge Your Purpose, is available on Amazon for just $10 (https://bit.ly/AwakenMySoul). I desperately long to help you fall in love with God’s Living Word that speaks to every single sentence in the story of your life! For real!
ALL PROCEEDS will help young pregnant women in need, so as you invest in yourself, you’re investing in mamas who need you, too! I get nothing out of this except knowing I’m doing what God called me to do… help people discover their anchor! And THAT, my friends, is more than enough! Together, let’s make a difference and BE the difference! Awaken, my soul! BY DR. DEBBIE LANIER

Clemmons, NC is a charming town just outside of Winston-Salem with beautiful parks such as Tanglewood, along with golf courses, restaurants, retail and strong community values. It is highly likely that residents will see at least one person they know anytime they leave their homes to go shopping or out to eat. While Lewisville-Clemmons Road is bustling today, it was not always as busy. Many locals can attest to downtown Clemmons’ gradual expansion through the years and enjoy seeing the area continue to expand by the day.
Brian Stevens, a charter pilot for a private jet management company at RDU International Airport, grew up in Clemmons from 1982 until he left to attend college at the University of North Dakota in 2000. Now a resident of Dunn, NC, Brian returns to Clemmons three to four times throughout the year to visit his parents, who still reside in the area. While traffic in Clemmons was lighter and much less hectic than traffic in Winston-Salem when Brian was learning to drive as a teenager, rush hour traffic in Clemmons today is sometimes comparable to Christmastime traffic on Hanes Mall Boulevard. Brian states, “I look forward to seeing the growth in the area each time I return. I always like to ride through town and see all the new restaurants and businesses that have come to Clemmons since I moved away.”
The Lowes Foods of Clemmons is a popular hangout spot for grocery shopping and drinking beer at The Beer Den. Another popular local hangout, along with one of Brian’s parents’ favorite spots, is Mossy’s. A sports bar located on Towncenter Drive, Mossy’s serves burgers, wings and signature cocktails. Many customers enjoy the restaurant’s outdoor patio, which is especially convenient as we endure the COVID-19 pandemic. If you’re in the mood for breakfast or Sunday brunch with friends, First Watch is brand new to the area. Sitting right in front of Mossy’s, First Watch is a great option for those wishing to wash down their French toast with a mimosa or Bloody Mary. With more growth comes the need for more housing in the area. Clemmons Town Center Luxury Apartments offers one, two and three-bedroom apartments within walking distance to restaurants and retail. These pet-friendly apartments include amenities such as a fitness center, resort-style pool and a pet park. These apartments are perfect for young professionals, families or healthcare workers desiring a short commute to Wake Forest Baptist Health’s Medical Plaza in Clemmons.
Operating since 2016, Phenom Fitness on Stadium Drive is one of the newer fitness facilities established in Clemmons. The gym provides top-notch personal training, meal plans and a family atmosphere where gym members work together and support each other in achieving their fitness goals. The gym also offers sports supplements and stylish apparel for purchase.
One of Clemmons’ newest additions is Cugino Forno, located at 6316 Clemmons Point Drive. Also found in downtown Winston-Salem, Cugino Forno serves wood-fired pizzas, salads and desserts, and is one of many fantastic options for Italian food in the area. In fact, one of Brian’s fondest childhood memories includes dining out at the Brick Oven with his family on Tuesday nights for its famous pizza buffet and salad bar. He and his parents also frequented Illiano’s Italian Family Restaurant when he was a child, with his parents remaining loyal customers today. A long-time local favorite since 1982, Ronni’s has been serving up buffalo wings, pizzas and sandwiches for years in a family friendly atmosphere, and remains just as Brian remembers it. Even with the rising number of competing restaurants in the area, Ronni’s remains packed and is a staple of Clemmons.
Although destroyed in 2010 by a fire, Brian is glad to see the Taco Bell of Clemmons still standing today, as he recalls being first in line with his family after church every Sunday to receive free cinnamon twists. He believes more local breweries would be an excellent addition to the area and desires to see a Target make it to Clemmons one day. Regarding Clemmons’ future, Brian hopes for continued growth in the area without losing its small-town feel that residents cherish.

Your sweet pet is going to need medical care, so make sure you find a vet that you can trust to help make sure your pet gets everything he or she needs. If you’ve never had a vet before, do some research. Ask the other pet owners in your life which vet they use. All of that will help you make the right decision.
The Animal Adoption and Rescue Foundation (AARF) of Winston-Salem serves to connect rescue cats and dogs with loving families and helps foster the bond between them. Their website, www.aarfws.org, has all the information you need to get started on your adoption.
No matter what kind of pet you end up bringing home, they’re going to have to learn something new for sure. Talk about it as a family to make sure you have a consistent plan for all aspects of house training. PREPARE YOUR HOME
Thinking about the commitment ahead is the first step to deciding if you’re ready to adopt a pet. Adopting a pet is no small task. Animals require love, care and affection. They can also be costly. You need to make sure you understand your responsibilities before you take this on. It would be terrible to realize you were not ready or prepared after the fact. Adopting a pet is more than just a warm, fuzzy feeling and snuggling something cute and little. It is a responsibility and a commitment, and you just need to be sure you’re ready for all that comes with it.
You may have thought about the perfect pet for you, but keep an open mind when you’re looking around. You might find the opportunity to adopt a puppy or an older dog, or a cat with special needs. You may not even realize how many different types of pets need a home. Decide what will work best for your family, and then go on the hunt to fall in love.
It’s essential to get your house ready before you bring home your new furry friend. Set up a special space for your dog or cat where you can put their crate or bed and toys. If you’ve got a puppy on your hands, make sure you get your home puppyproofed. They like to chew, so make sure to keep trash and recycling under a lid or behind closed doors. Keep electrical cords covered and stow away socks, shoes and other things they might like to get their teeth on.

In the midst of this pandemic, people have realized the need to have more love in their home. Pets can bring that love, and there are so many animals out there that need love, too. However, there’s so much to think about when you are considering adopting a pet. The thought alone can be overwhelming. Here are a few things you should think through before you bring your pet home.
You can prepare ahead of time by getting some things you might need like a bed or crate, food and water bowls, a collar and a leash. It’s fun to buy lots of toys and treats, too, but you might want to wait until you know precisely what your pet needs and wants before you spend too much money.

President Kelly Lael said, “We have been operating Lael Homes as a one-stop-shop for years. We take great pride in our ability to pull together options that simplify the process for our clients. However, we have long dreamed of having a design studio. We wanted to create a beautiful space that would showcase quality resources such as cabinets, tile, backsplashes, countertops, flooring, lighting, etc. Should our clients need window treatments, furniture, rugs and more – we are closely aligned with companies that can pull the entire vision together. Village Kitchen & Bath Design Studio has something for everyone.” “Agree,” said Andr¬ew Lael, CEO of Lael Homes. “Our new design studio is a space where new possibilities can be imagined. While we are a licensed general contractor, and we can accommodate a new construction or remodeling project, we also welcome the opportunity to work with other builders and designers.” Village Kitchen & Bath Design Studio is projected to open in March of 2021, and already, excitement is buzzing! “We are opening beside Pete’s Restaurant – a Clemmons landmark,” said Kelly. “Village Kitchens & Bath Design Studio is a woman-owned business with Andrew as my partner. We’ve been renovating and outfitting, and we can’t wait to welcome our customers to Village Kitchen & Bath!
“The new storefront is the perfect next step for our growth plan,” continued Kelly. “In addition to Andrew and myself, our company is growing! We’ve hired an interior designer and project manager, in addition to our bookkeeper and office manager. We know there are a lot of exciting opportunities coming up in 2021. We know that families are looking for lasting quality that not only fits their home décor and style but also their lifestyle. Our showroom will give visual examples of how many possibilities there are to make that Andrewhappen.”shared,
“Your home is always a great investment,” continued Andrew. “As we gear up for spring, we look forward to hearing from those who need to get the ball rolling on their own home renovation and building projects. We consider it such an honor to help families create the home they want to love for years to come.”
For more than three decades, Andrew and Kelly Lael have been building and designing homes. In 2019, they re-branded their business, Lael Homes, and in 2020, they made plans to expand. Village Kitchen & Bath Design Studio is a perfect extension of their business model.

Andrew said, “It’s part of the Lael Homes difference. We have an uncompromising commitment to excellence. We stay on top of trends in the industry, and while we aren’t interested in being trendy, we understand that certain trends will have more staying power than others. We help our clients choose options that will work for the long-term and that will remain stylish over time. Wellborn Cabinets are an excellent example of quality and excellence. Plus, they produce product lines that cover a broad scope of options that will work with everything from a rental unit to a multi-million-dollar mansion.”

“Our business is relational by nature, and to that end, we’re branching out to coordinate packages, including builder packages, that will cater to custom builders and remodelers. We are available to assist to the degree that they need us, including a design room where builders and their interior designers can meet with their clients in our showroom.”
“We have great partnerships with our vendors, including trusted names like Wellborn Cabinets,” continued Kelly. “They are a ‘Made in America’ line which feels great to support, plus they are a family owned business. We’re also proud to work with major vendors and boutique-style companies. We will be offering exclusive product lines and brand new releases that won’t be found anywhere else in this market. One of the many things that sets the Aeracura team apart is they are heavily inspired by nature and take great pride in being artists of their craft. From their master and senior stylists, colorists, and estheticians to their makeup artists and spa coordinators, they genuinely live out the salon’s mission every day in their work by truly loving to make people look and feel their greatest!
BRINGS OUT YOUR INNER GODDESS Through Innovative Creativity and a Brand New Location
The entire Aeracura team is very excited about the new salon but also that they will be extending their service menu to focus on more spa treatments at their new Clemmons location with luxurious facials, relaxing full-body massages, waxing, and brow and lash treatments. Christi described this exciting update as “a total mind and body experience to recharge and refresh!”
BY TARYN JEREZ, PHOTOS BY SHAUN STOCKTON PHOTOGRAPHY
The brand new location is a beautiful addition to the Aeracura family, staying true to its brand roots and mission. “Aeracura is the Norse Goddess of blossoming,” says Christi Bradham, owner of Aeracura Salon. “She is a caretaker of gardens and a muse for artists. The name fits because I see this salon as a place of beauty and artistry; the colors, location, and style of the salon were chosen intentionally to reflect these elements.” The new location is 2800 square feet of salon and spa ready to serve those community members looking to experience services that highlight their most beautiful self, while creating moments that help them embrace their inner goddess!
Thein Reynolda Village.”visionforthissecond location stayed true to that of the original Reynolda Village salon, with the importance of natural sunlight incorporated as much as possible. So, naturally, you can expect to walk in and be greeted by rays of sunshine throughout the space with its huge ceiling-to-floor windows. While it may seem like just a nice design feature, “Natural light is imperative to see hair color more vividly and see the fine details in the precision of a haircut,” said Christi.
Team members are always studying new trends and techniques while strictly using environmentally-friendly Aveda products made entirely of naturally derived plant and flower ingredients. The Aveda partnership helps Aeracura maintain zero harsh chemicals or fumes which can easily disrupt the natural and calming environment they strive to create.
Like most family businesses, Christi shared that it’s all hands on deck as they prepare for the new location opening. “My family has been working tirelessly on getting everything ready so that our guests feel as though they have walked into a whole new enchanting world! My husband Zach has been doing most of the construction, and he has poured his heart into the details to make this location feel as exquisite as our salon
Since it’s grand opening in 2015, Aeracura Aveda Salon has become no stranger to bringing innovative style and care to Winston Salem. Over the last five years, the Aeracura team has not only continued to provide its highly trained expertise and commitment to its clients but has pushed the envelope when it comes to embracing new training and techniques to keep the level of care always rising! Most recently, ambition and innovation came together in creating an exciting expansion with a second location, Aeracura Salon and Spa, which you can now find at 6265 Towncenter Drive in Clemmons.
Timing couldn’t be better for feeling refreshed and pampered with the spring season in full swing and the start of the wedding season here.
If you are looking to learn more and experience what the Aeracura team has to offer, you can book an appointment by heading to aeracurasalon.com or visit one of their two beautiful locations: Aeracura Salon and Spa at 6265 Town Center Dr. Clemmons, NC 27012 or Aeracura Aveda Salon at 101 Reynolda Village Winston Salem, NC 27106.

Here is a short list of just a few of the Blessing Boxes in our community:
Even adding one or two items can make a big difference. The morning that I was assigned this article, I had just returned from walking my dog for the sole intent of taking some extra boxed stuffing, cranberry sauce and mashed potato packets to one of the Blessing Boxes near our house. (Yes, now you know what Thanksgiving looks like at my house.) As Norman and I approached the box, a woman pulled over and got out to take a look at what was inside. I hesitated a little – unsure if I should leave her be or let her know I was about to add more. I didn’t want to make her uncomfortable in any way. Norman decided for me by giving a little squeak to catch her attention in hopes of the adoration he so craves. She commented on his cuteness, and I thanked her and said that I was about to add some more items if she had a minute. She put what was in her hand in her car while I added our items to the box, and then we began to walk on. She said “thank you,” and I said “it’s my pleasure, friend” and Norman and I continued on.

Although the exact origin of these boxes is unknown, whomever named them Blessing Boxes was a genius. Being able to open those little doors and place something inside is one of the greatest blessings on Earth.

Like many folks, you may have found yourself doing a little stockpiling as you’ve done your grocery shopping lately. How can you resist when Del Monte canned veggies are four for $2.00? Or, Uncle Ben’s rice is a BOGO? Sales on non-perishables give us the perfect opportunity to think about the Blessing Boxes and how we can help a neighbor find what they need in a dignified way. You can even keep a box in your trunk filled with various non-perishables so that when you come upon a box, you’re ready.

As you make your way around town, you have probably noticed charming little cabinets here and there containing food and other items. They are Blessing Boxes, a grassroots movement of neighbors helping neighbors by making non-perishable food available anonymously to folks who find themselves in need. According to The Southeastern University Consortium for Food Security and Health, 17% of the population in Forsyth County is food insecure, meaning they are in the state of being without reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food. In simpler, difficult terms, a large number of our neighbors don’t know where their next meal is coming from. We can only assume that this number is higher now due to the pandemic. Families who may have never found themselves worried about feeding their children are now struggling. The sad fact is, it only takes one “bad month” to plunge some

One of the…“ahem”…charming facets of growing older is knowing that, eventually, you will need to face all those boxes, bins and basements in order to downsize your lifestyle. “Affirming words from moms and dads are like light switches. Speak a word of affirmation at the right moment in a child’s life, and it’s like lighting up a whole roomful of possibilities.”
The dictionary defines empowerment as the process of becoming stronger and more confident, especially in controlling one’s life and claiming one’s rights. Empowered children are more likely to be resilient children and adults who will advocate to meet their physical and mental health needs. Psychology Today says empowering children is guiding them to persevere when obstacles arise. Maureen Healy, the author of the article “Empowering Kids,” suggests parents reflect their child’s abilities, skills and qualities, so they see themselves as highly valuable, talented and capable. In addition, encourage your child to take appropriate risks and give him or her the opportunity to make age-appropriate choices. As they take risks and make choices, help them work through what worked and didn’t work, what they learned and, most importantly, what they will try next time.
“Empathy is when a person accurately communicates that they see another’s intentions and emotional state. It means watching our child’s frustration and focusing on how life feels in that little child’s body while putting our own agenda into the background.”~Andrea Nair Good Start Early Learning says, helping young children develop a strong sense of empathy is beneficial for mental health, success, happiness and reduced stress. Taking the time to model and teach empathy sets the stage for a lifetime of physical and emotional health. The best way to teach kids empathy is to model it. Name your feelings to your child (as appropriate) and help them name theirs. When watching TV and reading together, pause to ask how they think the characters feel and why.
As a dietitian and mom, I have seen the positive effects of supporting mindful eating in children. Mindful eating allows children to recognize their unique physical needs and empowers them to meet them. They learn to decide what and how much to eat based on how their body feels in the moment, using basic nutrition as a guide while still practicing flexibility in their food choices. Learning to accept the present without judgment helps children accept their body size without comparison and shame. These important skills reduce disordered eating, yo-yo dieting and increase overall happiness.

When I was pregnant with my first child, I read books, spoke to experts, made plans (and contingency plans) on how to keep my daughter safe and healthy once she arrived. This filled the 9 PLUS months of waiting for her to be born, but I soon realized life does not always go according to plan. That parenting lesson became abundantly clear as I tried to navigate parenting during a global pandemic (hint: there were no books, plans or experts on the subject). Thanks to other mothers’ wisdom and strong community support, I learned the most important tools in my “parenting handbook” are listening, empathy, empowerment and mindfulness. These tools take practice but can be used to raise healthy children who become thriving adults.
“The path to a healthy body and happy soul is based upon self-study, mindfulness, love and awareness.”
Jordan Harrold, LCSW says mindfulness is not about “doing it right;” it’s about paying attention while doing it. She suggests practicing the following mindfulness activities with your kids:
ORR 30 | ForsythMags.com
“The most basic of all human needs is to understand and be understood. The best way to understand people is to listen to them.”
• Take time to notice. Name five things you see, four things you can touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell and one thing you can taste.
• Deep breathing. Breathe in through the nose (like smelling a flower) and out through the mouth (like blowing bubbles, not blowing candles out).
BY BROOKE
~ Ralph Nichols An important part of raising physically and emotionally healthy kids is learning to listen to their verbal and non-verbal cues. In the toddler phase, children often have a lot to say and will do whatever it takes to be heard. Practicing listening skills when kids are young makes it more likely they will continue to share the good, bad and ugly as they get older. This allows you to get them to experts like physicians or counselors if needed and give them advice and tools for handling tough situations. Regardless of your children’s ages, make a point to stop and give them your full attention. Make eye contact and repeat back what you hear to show you heard them and to clarify you understood. Listen and respond without judgment, increasing the likelihood your kids will continue to open up to you throughout the years.

Creating Sober Sis and the 21 Day Challenge provided that support group that women need when they are working to break – or make a new – habit. “People will decide they want to drink less and so we provide space to take a break. The first 7-10 days are the hardest, this is when most people give up when on their own. We share tools early on to help with cravings and support women through the hardest part of the obstacle course. Jenn says, “Instead of perfection, we’re focusing on progress in the group.”
The difference? Accountability. Apply that notion of accountability to maybe another aspect of your health that you’re thinking about for 2021 – drinking less alcohol. You might be thinking, but there is no personal trainer for this!
Ah, but there is – and her name is Jenn Kautsch, the founder of Sober Sis.
January 1, you’re there! January 2, got it! This goes on for a few weeks and then, the inevitable hits: you stopped going. This year is going to be different, you decide with resolve. You’re going to hire a trainer: someone to hold you accountable, checks in on you, and share the successes and the not-so-great moments. Fast-forward to the future, and you are still going to the gym. You kept your resolution! Congrats!
“Good intentions fall to the wayside without a structure of support,” Jenn says. “When you’re thinking about goal setting, it’s about changing your relationship with drinking. Maybe you’ve had too much over the holidays or through 2020 and you want to reset or reboot for 2021 – and you need those partners on the journey of progress.”
BY JEN OLENICZAK BROWN
Jenn runs “21 Day Reset Challenges” every month (and if you’re reading this before January 3rd, you have time to hop on one right now!) to become what she calls “soberminded.” It’s not a place for folks struggling with alcoholism: it is a place for folks who find themselves mindlessly pouring that 5 pm wine or, as Jenn has seen during the pandemic, drinking out of boredom. “I’d wake up in the morning with good intentions but “wine o’clock” would roll around and I’d fall right back to my habit of an evening drink (or three!).
2021: Refresh By
Ah, the New Year. Out with the old, in with the new, and this year, I don’t know anyone that wanted to keep 2020 around. Maybe you’re looking back on 2020 with, not necessarily loathing, but as an incredible jumping off point for improvement and making your life a better place. You’ve tried it other years, and finally, decide this is your year to…go to the gym more! And then you remember…wait…you’ve tried this whole gym thing for the past three years. And every year, it starts amazing!
TINYURL.COM/SOBERSISFW
Jenn Kautsch, Sober Sis Founder. Find out how to RELAX and be SOCIAL without a drink in your hand
This network of women that make up Sober Sis is available 24 hours a day and 7 days a week – and the challenge and group are complete with coaching, connection, and, something I love – alternatives to alcohol that aren’t just syrup in seltzer. “There are so many alternatives out there that are exciting,” Jenn said. These are often showcased on her Instagram, ranging from craft non-alcoholic beer to non-alcoholic premade, just-refrigerateand-open cocktails like a “Mindful Mule” a non-alcoholic Moscow Mule from Spirity Cocktails or bottles to keep in your fridge from Mingle Mocktails.
If 2020 has found you like many women, either using a bit more alcohol than usual to cope with boredom or loneliness, or maybe just ready to start fresh and sober-minded in 2021, check out Sober Sis and join one of her monthly 21-day challenges: TinyURL.com/SoberSisFW. And remember – this is all a marathon, not a sprint.
Being Sober-Minded
This supportive group allows for accountability, connectivity, and learning – and works to keep any feelings of shame far away. “We look at a slip up as feedback, not a setback,” said Jenn. “In the group when someone makes a mistake, we focus on remembering the lesson. It’s like recon – we celebrate it, say thank you for the information and feedback that we can all learn from.” This is a far cry from what we might be experiencing when we do this on our own – think of the last resolution you tried and remembered mid-March? I don’t know about you, but I think it’s me, that I can’t do it, that I’ve failed.

And, how about the fact that wineries in our area have the greatest success with Chardonnay, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot? Who knew? These fun, “nice-to-knows” are three more reasons to add “visiting wineries” to your list of winter diversions. We come for the beverage, of course, but the ambiance and company of fellow wine lovers (even if we’re socially distanced) is a big part of the experience. Keep in mind that many wineries offer special hours, tours, packages and unique events. But do call in advance to confirm, then grab a fellow “grape-lover” and head outside to a vineyard or a vinyard. Whether you prefer the spelling with or without an “e,” here’s a “tasting” to consider: for a visit and relax under the shade of old are close by, but a world away. have been open over 20 years creating with food and family and friends.

Did you know that the Yadkin Valley is considered North Carolina’s first American viticultural (winegrowing) area? Or, even better, that there are many wineries to visit within a 20-mile radius of Clemmons?

Childress Vineyards can be found 18 miles south of Clemmons in Lexington. Here, you’ll experience the dream incarnate of NASCAR team owner Richard Childress. Opening its doors in 2004, Childress offers a beautiful tasting room along with an on-site bistro, curbside pickup and a gift shop. Located in southeastern Yadkin County and established in 1996, Hanover Park Vineyard was the first winery in Yadkin County. Just 17 miles west of Clemmons, this vineyard boasts old-world ambiance and world class wines often likened to those from the Rhone River Valley in France. Guests are invited to come for a visit and relax under the shade of the old oak trees. Hanover Park Vineyard is the perfect place to indulge in a wine flight or bottle of wine that will appeal to wine connoisseurs and novices alike.
Westbend Winery and Brewery, established in 1972 and located in Forsyth County, is regarded as “the original Yadkin Valley Vineyard.” Located on 40 rolling acres on Williams Road in Lewisville, Westbend is steeped in tradition while current with the times. It offers the fruit of the vine as well as dozens of lagers and ales. Westbend hosts local, live music every Saturday and Sunday.
Just 23 miles west of Clemmons is 40 acres of beautiful land known as Brandon Hills Vineyard Known as a boutique vineyard, this scenic retreat allows for hours of enjoyment among the breathtaking landscape. The guiding philosophy at Brandon Hills Vineyard is “Stay small to ensure that maximum attention can be devoted to care for the grapes, meticulous farming produces better grapes and therefore better wine.” The vineyard is pet friendly and is open Saturdays and Sundays in February as well as Fridays-Sundays March through December. For more information, visit the website at brandonhillsvineyard.com or call 336.463.WINE.
Sanders Ridge Winery is located 24 miles northwest of Clemmons in Boonville. The pandemic has been stressful for all of us. One of the hardest parts has been finding ways to relax and enjoy yourself while practicing social distancing. Everyone seems to be in a situation where they are overwhelmed somehow, and the typical outlets they have been using in the past are not all available. However, golf is one pastime that is a pretty good choice during a pandemic. Golf can be played individually or in small groups and is an outdoor activity. That makes it a relatively safe choice for social distancing. And, golf courses around the country have seen a lot of traffic. Seasoned golfers are taking advantage of continuing to play golf, and there is a whole lot of people giving golf a chance for the very first time. The big question is whether or not people are going to stick with it. Suppose golf is becoming popular because other activities are unavailable. Will people fall in love with golfing or go back to their previous activities once the pandemic is over? Only time will tell. If you are looking for a local golf course in the Clemmons area, you are in luck. We have some beautiful golf courses that can meet a variety of needs for any bermudaruncc.com336.998.8155golfer.324BermudaRunDrive,BermudaRun,NC27006

Screen time may have lost some of its novelty during the pandemic, but family movie night can still inspire fun family memories. Start with the food. Try a build-your-own popcorn bar. Put out popcorn, Reese’s Pieces, Sour Patch Kids, Butter Finger Bites, ranch seasoning, taco seasoning and parmesan cheese and let your family build their perfect movie snack! In addition to fun snacks, make picking the movie a true honor. Have each family member write his or her name on a scrap of paper, fold it up and put it in a hat or container. Let kids get silly making drumroll noises, then pick and announce the winner of who gets to pick the movie of the night. Spread pillows and blankets around the room, or even consider building a fort. Snuggle up and enjoy!
2. FAMILY GAME NIGHT – TOURNAMENT
10. CAMP OUT Temps are low, but an indoor family campout will get family morale high. Set up tents in a common area. Begin the evening outside around a bonfire (or indoor fireplace), roast marshmallows and tell stories. Next, break out the flashlights for flashlight tag – this can be played indoors with lights off or outside. Wind down before bed by putting on shadow puppet shows with your hands.
7. YOGA Too much time sitting around indoors can make even the nimblest bodies stiff. Loosen up with a family yoga session. A family favorite is Cosmic Kids Yoga, find frozen, mine craft and more on YouTube or cosmickids.com.
Get the family involved in planning. Have each person choose a game to be played, and decide as a group what the tournament winner will get. Next, make a chart where all can see – put family members’ names in column one and game titles across the top in row one. As the game night progresses, update the chart by giving a point to the person who wins each game.

Last week, we did one extra thing that really had my kids excited. Because not everyone is familiar with what a book box is, or even noticed it as they were coming and going, we took gifts to our neighbors. We made bags that included a free book, a bookmark with some basic information about the book box on it and a paper that told them why they were getting a book and that they could come swap it out if it wasn’t a perfect fit for them. Before we even made it up the second street with our wagon full of books, we saw kids on bikes at the book box and a family heading there with a book to swap in hand. It felt really neat to see people out (on kind of a colder day) just to check out the new box. I am a big believer in investing in your community in whatever ways you can, and my hope is that these books will become valuable to our neighbors the way they are to our family. Since starting our Little Free Library, we have also made it kind of a fun destination whenever we go out together. The website, LittleFreeLibrary.org has a map of all the registered book boxes, and we found out that there are about 10 of them within a few minutes of our house. Many of them are at playgrounds, churches and other great, local community spaces. It has become a treasure hunt for us to go find new, special books to enjoy. The heart and soul of any community is, and will always be, the people who live and work in it. There is a sense of belonging and ownership, and pride that goes with being a part of a thriving community –especially communities like the Town of Lewisville and the Village of Clemmons. Lewisville and Clemmons represent a unique blend of entrepreneurial drive and small-town charm. It’s important to foster and develop the people of our communities, and therefore, the Lewisville-Clemmons Chamber of Commerce commenced its first Leadership LewisvilleClemmons program in the fall of 2019. In spring of 2020, we graduated 21 local entrepreneurs, leaders and visionaries who are committed to the success of Lewisville and Clemmons. We celebrate our inaugural class and welcome our class of 2021! “Common unity – that community feeling that everybody talks about. We all live here, and we live here for a reason. We like it. Because we love it, we want to see it sustainable and continue to move forward. And, the only way you can have it move forward is to give back and be a part of it.”

Leadership Lewisville-Clemmons is a program designed for those who work, live or have a vested interest in the success of the Town of Lewisville or Village of Clemmons.
Participants learn about leadership skills, how the respective governments operate, information about economic development in the communities, social and human services matters, as well as real estate development. And, they also learn about the health and education priorities and challenges in the communities. Leadership Lewisville-Clemmons participants work on small group projects in order to further develop their leadership skills.
“I didn’t know anyone in the program when I started it, but meeting people through the program has been one of my favorite things. There are people I met who I can communicate with on Facebook, or if I need advice on certain things, there are people I know to call now. Also, it was good to meet some of the town leaders and learn what they do behind the scenes.”
“If you live or work in the Lewisville or Clemmons area, go for it! You’re going to learn a ton of information that I guarantee you didn’t know!”

A super moist crumble with toasted walnuts and a little spice to deepen the flavor, this carrot cake loaf is a scrumptious gift to wrap up for friends or serve after family dinner.
Carrot Cake Loaf with Ermine Frosting
Did you know that President George Washington served carrot cake at White House parties? While many baker folktales have labeled carrot cake as a sweet treat during times of rationing, it was actually enjoyed amongst the rich in history. Originally, carrot cake was developed in Medieval palaces when the chefs slowly cooked the carrots to highlight their natural sugars. To add richer flavors, the chefs stirred in a variety of warm spices, then flour and eggs to create a carrot pudding. As time went by, the carrot pudding evolved into a fluffy cake that was complemented with a velvety cream cheese frosting to be enjoyed.
INGREDIENTS
INSTRUCTIONS
3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the grated carrots, maple syrup, brown sugar, applesauce, whisked eggs, olive oil and vanilla extract. Pour into the flour mixture to mix just until combined. Fold in the walnuts.

2. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, baking soda, ground cloves and salt.
2. In the bowl of a stand mixer, cream together the butter and sugar until fluffy, about 4-5 minutes. On medium speed, pour in the cooled flour mixture, then beat until light like whipped cream. Add the frosting on to the cooled loaf cake to enjoy. A decadent breakfast, a lightly sweet dessert or a simple gift to loved ones, it’s time to grab your aprons and begin baking deliciousness!

clemmons wonderland
How did these businesses determine which direction to spin their décor? The answer was simple for Alyssia Love of Great Clips. Alyssa explains, “I knew that our display should be haircut-related because we are a salon, and who better to get a haircut than Santa? A good friend of mine, Heather Romano McVane did the painting for us, and we couldn’t have been happier with how it turned out. She definitely captured the ‘jolly’ on Santa’s face.” For
Nina Woosley Beck, the owner of English’s Bridal and Formal Wear, was elated to participate in the contest. “We really had a great time decorating for the contest,” says Nina. “I had just given birth to my daughter in mid-November. This was something that my sisters, my mom and I could come together and work on as a family, which made it twice as special.”
As small businesses struggle with a multitude of new challenges that the pandemic has presented, Clemmons Wonderland was a great opportunity for those businesses to make up for lost time and even encouraged visitors from out of town to shop and dine. Retailers and restaurants began signing up online to offer promotions throughout the holiday season in the beginning of November, which was earlier than in years past. Additionally, local businesses located within the Village of Clemmons decked their halls by participating in the First Annual Light up the Village Contest. Participants such as Abbott’s Frozen Custard, English’s Bridal and Formal Wear, Express Oil and Tire Engineers, First Horizon Bank, Great Clips and Ketchie Creek Bakery and Cafe submitted photos of their storefront decorations online at clemmons.org for viewers to vote on their favorite festive display.

There is no better way to celebrate the holidays in Clemmons than visiting local businesses and boutiques, seeing beautiful décor and dining out at the wide range of restaurants the Village of Clemmons has to offer. Clemmons Wonderland, a tradition notorious for hosting the Festival of Lights, is named a Top 20 Event in the Southeast. Although social distancing and new statewide mandates posed many challenges in the year 2020, the Village of Clemmons wanted to ensure that the COVID-19 Grinch didn’t steal Christmas for residents and visitors in the area. In the eyes of Shannon Ford, the marketing and communications director for the Village of Clemmons, Clemmons Wonderland was created to do anything possible to help local businesses during the holiday season.

Alyssia, the best aspect of the contest was the response the business received from customers who viewed their holiday display in person. She states, “Getting to share a little bit of joy with everyone in a year that has been so crazy has been great.”
With the pandemic canceling community events since March, residents and visitors from out of town needed some Christmas cheer. According to Shannon, “The Village of Clemmons’ greatest passion is to offer free events to the entire community that appeal to all families so they can get out and enjoy themselves.” To combat COVID-related challenges, the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting was streamed live on social media to allow viewers some sense of holiday normalcy from the comfort of their sofas. As the first virtual event that the Village has ever held, more than 500 viewers gathered to watch the livestream. In fact, Shannon and her family had the honor of lighting the tree themselves. Chick-fil-A, the sponsor of the Annual Tree Lighting, still made it possible for viewers to enjoy a special treat. If customers in the drive-thru said, “Chick-fil-A has the world’s best brownies,” everyone in the vehicle received a free brownie. Miss the livestream? Visit the Village of Clemmons YouTube channel to rewatch the tree lighting at your convenience.

“Every time you choose to recycle, you are giving that item a second life to serve a new purpose and save natural resources.”
4. Don’t bag recyclables, it slows down machines and clogs equipment.

DID YOU KNOW? FACTS FROM RECYCLE ACROSS AMERICA:
RECYCLE. Once efforts are made to reduce and reuse the next step is recycle. Lewisville and Clemmons work diligently to make recycling easy for their community. Recycling pickup occurs bi-weekly, visit local municipality websites for pickup schedules and local updates. Recycle Right1. Empty, scrape and rinse recyclable food containers 2. Flatten cardboard boxes and if possible remove plastic and tape 3. Plates, ceramic, mirrors, light bulbs, and glasses are different than recyclable glass. If they are in good condition donate them, if not throw them away.
*Visit the Waste Management website for information such as pick up schedules and important tips and tricks to recycling effectively (wm.com/us/en/recycle-right/recycling-101).

Recycling just one glass jar saves enough electricity to light an 11-watt CFL enoughEveryfor 20 hours.bulbthreemonths,Americansthrowaluminuminthelandfillstobuildournation’sentirecommercialairfleet. Step one, reduce the amount of waste you produce. A major contributor to waste is extra packaging. Skip plastic bags when grocery shopping, opting for reusable totes instead. Get the most out of your reusable totes by using them at retail stores and when picking up takeout. Further reduce your waste by using reusable water bottles, coffee cups, and food containers. Reusable products are better for the environment and your budget. Many coffee shops and grocery stores will provide small financial incentives for customers taking this greener route. Some waste is unavoidable, use it for good by composting fruit, vegetable scraps, eggshells and coffee grounds- using them as fertilizer later. RE-USE. Support local charities, save money, and keep items from ending up in the dump by donating and buying second-hand items. Familiarize yourself with community Good Will stores, Habitat for Humanity and other second hand shops. Other great places to buy and sell second hand items are community Facebook groups and Craigslist. Donate books to libraries or start a neighborhood book exchange. Research and giveback to non-profit organizations that are important to you, for example, City Lights is a local organization that collects clothes, shoes, coats, backpacks, school supplies, and toys for children in need. Remember the proverb “what one person may consider worthless could be highly prized or valued by someone else.”
The Village of Clemmons and Town of Lewisville are beautiful communities surrounded by nature. Both Clemmons and Lewisville are committed to being good stewards of the environment by making it easy for citizens to decrease their carbon footprint and preserve their community’s natural beauty. If you have ever driven through the heart of Lewisville or Clemmons, then you know that your neighbors are local business owners, working hard to offer valuable products and services in the community that they call home. But, did you know that more than $9.3 billion would be directly returned to our economy if every US family spent just $10 a month at a local business?
When you spend your hard-earned money with a local business, you aren’t just helping that proprietor make money! You’re investing in your community. Significantly more money stays in a community when purchases are made at locally owned – rather than nationally owned – businesses. How? Because when you purchase from locally owned businesses, more of your investment stays in the community thanks to the way that these businesses often purchase from other local businesses, service providers and farms. Purchasing local helps other businesses grow as well as the local tax base. And, that’s good for you and your neighbors!
Sure, we can type a few words into our phones and have an item ordered and on its way to our doors in minutes, but isn’t something missing from that experience that you can only get by walking into a local business?
Supporting local businesses connects you to people that you already have something in common with – a love for where you live and the community in which you are a part.
Here we are, at the start of another New Year with goals, dreams and aspirations, both large and small. Of course, the events of 2020 have impacted how life will look for us in this shiny new year and, perhaps, some of our loftier resolutions are no longer the priority. Perhaps, if you’re like me, your goals have become a bit more grounded in the simple, beautiful day-to-day blessings that are so easy to take for granted. For example, simply being able to run into town to find the perfect scarf for an aunt in a boutique or to having your hair done at a salon that’s been in business longer than you can remember!
Not to mention the opportunity to see, feel and perhaps even test out the item you’re shopping for. Shopping locally gives you the chance to learn about the product – who made it, where it came from and what are the benefits of this one vs. that one? It’s examples like this that explain why 65% of Americans’ shopping budgets are still spent in-store. For all our fancy technology, efficiency and desire for immediate gratification, spending time in a local business is comfortable and Supportingsimply feels right.localshops and service providers might not always be the “cheapest” or even the fastest way to complete your task. However, when you look at it as an investment of your time and money back into your hometown, you will start to see how easy it is to forego “putting items in your cart” and make a quick trip into town instead!
Resolving to Support our Neighbors and Community BY TABATHA RENEGAR ONLINE SHOPPING RETAILERSCHECKCANBELOCAL,TOO!YOURFAVORITEWEBSITEFORTHEOPTIONTOSHOPONLINE 80 | ForsythMags.com
So, as we look ahead at 300+ new days in 2021, an easy resolution we can make together is to choose our neighbors and community first by heading into town for our retail therapy needs! See you there!
And, let’s not forget the basic “feel good” nature of it! When you go into a local business or store, chances are you’re going to be warmly greeted and welcomed, whether it’s your first time in that establishment or your 101st time! Do you think your Amazon Prime driver is ever going to ask how your daughter’s doing as the new captain of her volleyball team?

HEIDEL
Keela Johnson was the original publisher of Forsyth Woman, Forsyth Woman Engaged and Forsyth Community, but in August 2020, the publishing reins were handed over to Keela’s daughter, Brooke Eagle. Robin Bralley has been the Forsyth Family publisher since the beginning.
Who are the publishers?
Four! We have two monthly magazines – Forsyth Woman and Forsyth Family. Then, our biannual wedding edition, Forsyth Woman Engaged. And finally, our annual publication that you’re reading — Forsyth Community Which magazine came first? Forsyth Woman was first. It started in 2005, and in 2007, Forsyth Family was launched. Forsyth Woman Engaged was unveiled in 2011, and Forsyth Community joined the family in 2015.
What makes Forsyth Magazines unique?
BY DENISE with Forsyth Magazines
How many titles are under the Forsyth Magazines umbrella?
The Forsyth Magazines brand has been around for well over a decade, and while there are those who remember the early days of black and white newsprint paper and stapled binding, we have new readers all the time! And, we know you might have questions! This article attempts to answer some of the most common questions we’re asked.
From Day One, the goal has been to provide local readers content that is upbeat and relevant to their lives and families. We share the stories behind many of the small businesses in our community and view our role as a small business advocate and promoter! We want our fellow small business owners to be successful! The relationships we have built with these partners are incredibly important to us, and we are so proud to share all they do with our readers.

Who was on the first cover?
What else does Forsyth Magazines do?
Besides the technology side of things, Forsyth Woman hosts monthly Girls’ Night Out (GNO) events, and Forsyth Family hosts monthly Kids’ Morning Out (KMO). We also publish a monthly calendar of community events in both magazines. To stay up to date with our events and be the first to know about giveaways, find us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter –@forsythmags! You can also subscribe to our monthly newsletter for a sneak peek of some of our favorite articles and special event updates!
The answer to that question isn’t black and white. For-profit businesses earn editorial based on their advertising contracts which is how we’re able to be a FREE publication to the community. Contact advertising@forsythmags. com to learn more about advertising opportunities and to submit editorial requests for consideration.
Have you ever skipped a publication month Nope!
What has been the biggest in producing monthly magazines?challenge
Forsyth Woman’s first cover featured local news anchor Cindy Farmer! The Bralley and Johnson families debuted their own families on the first cover of Forsyth Family. How many distribution locations are there? A lot! We are in many restaurants, stores and local Harris Teeters and Food Lion locations. The list is too long to include here, but you can find locations on our websites. And, Forsyth Community can be found in local Harris Teeter and Food Lions stores, real estate agent offices in and around Forsyth County, all 12 NC welcome centers across the state as well as many other locations.
That’s us in a nutshell! Visit ForsythMags.com, @forsythmags or call 888.892.3204 to learn more.
Hands down, the biggest obstacle we’ve faced has been cancer. Founder Keela Johnson was diagnosed with breast cancer shortly after launching Forsyth Woman and for a second time in 2018. Forsyth Family publisher Robin Bralley had her own breast cancer battle in 2016. Both women are warrior survivors, and we have a dynamic team that stepped in to help support them. But, those diagnoses were definite challenges for the business.
Forsyth Magazines has always been community minded as well as diligent about growing with technology and the readers. To that end, we have a very active social media presence on Facebook and Instagram! We also launched our podcast in January of 2020. You can listen to Brooke have informal, authentic conversations with local business owners, non-profit representatives, Forsyth Magazine team members and MORE! Tune in on Spotify, Apple or any other podcast streaming platforms – new episodes release every Thursday!
