Case Studies 32
Vacuum Evaporator Installation Significantly Reduces Waste Disposal Costs The Company • Global aerospace engineering firm • Manufacture aerospace components,
structures, subsystems and assemblies
• Supply companies including BAE Systems, Airbus, Boeing and Rolls-Royce
The Benefits • The equipment has the capability to process 2400 litres of waste per 24 hours
• 90% waste cost reduction • Annual disposal cost saving of £36,000 • Coolant and wastewater added to the waste stream processed through the evaporator
The Challenge • Generated roughly 2000 litres of waste per week
• Waste consisted of Britemor fluid,
• Quaker Houghton offered a turnkey
package with a payback on investment of 1.5 years
• High reliability and low maintenance of the evaporator process
wastewater and machine coolants
• A large stockpile of Britemor waste fluid had accumulated onsite – required disposal
• Cost to remove was estimated to be around £36,000
The Solution The cost of waste disposal via a third-party contractor was prohibitive to our client, who was seeking a more cost-effective solution. Quaker Houghton proposed the installation of a vacuum evaporator system that has the capability to separate the waste stream into a water phase, condensate and concentrate, generating an 80 to 90% reduction in the waste volume.
Customer Testimonial Since Quaker Houghton provided us with an Evaporator we have seen a significant reduction to our waste removal costs. The Equipment has now been running for over two years and we have recently added a new evaporator to our chemical treatment plant. The Equipment, as well as reducing our costs, has shown itself to be very reliable and virtually Maintenance free.
The decision was taken to conduct an onsite trial at one of the client’s sites with a 4-week evaluation using a Veolia Water E2400 Vacuum Evaporator. The large 90,000 litres of buildup Britemor waste was initially processed at around 85% efficiency. The subsequent processed fluid was allowed to be discharged as a condensate to foul drain, raising the efficiency to 90% after just two weeks. Samples off the condensate going to drain were taken every two days for analysis to ensure compliance with local authority consent limits.
33
Wash Plant and Vivex Coolant System Increased Productivity Supply, install and commission two large multi-stage wash systems, a Vivex Central Coolant System and secure a 5-year fluid management contract.
The Company • One of the world’s largest off-road wheel manufacturers
• Quaker Houghton have supplied
metalworking fluids and fluid management for over 10 years
• The company has recently announced a multimillion-pound investment program which will cover each of its seven manufacturing plants worldwide.
The Plant • Formerly one large wash plant washing
through several stages using Houghto-Clean 285
• Manufacturing process uses Houghto-Draw TD51 and Adrana D208 for wheel forming
• Large volume of stock is stored at plant
The Challenge • Old, expensive and unreliable wash plant that is expensive to maintain with a high energy consumption
• Wheel cleaning has remained challenging due to lack of investment and poor maintenance
• High rate of customer complaints due to quality-related issues
• Lack of capital to make required improvements
34
The requirements of the wash line were extremely demanding: • Continuous in-line wash cycle of wheel rims which must remove all residual oils and be touch dry in 30 seconds
• Continuous in-line wash cycle of wheel
inserts which also must remove all residual oils and be dry to touch
• Coolant system to allow continuous
uninterrupted supply of clean coolant to each of the forming tools
The Solution
The Benefits
Following a number of meetings and in-depth discussions, Quaker Houghton were able to present a fully costed proposal that offered a fully financed equipment solution, delivering the exact capital equipment requirements for the management team.
Quaker Houghton proposal has been 100% successful in helping to improve plant productivity and component quality. Due to the successful nature of the project, Quaker Houghton has been commissioned to provide 1st line response to support and maintain new equipment, alongside retaining the fluid management supply business for a further 5 years, whilst extending our reputation with the client globally. Production benefits include:
The offer comprised of two new high-tech multi-stage wash systems, specified to clean and process high volumes of wheels and rims as part of a continuous production process. Quaker Houghton also recommended a new Vivex Central Coolant System to support the modified wheel production line.
• Allow plant to make investment in much needed high-tech equipment
• Reduce energy consumption with energyefficient pumps and heaters
• Increased flow and quality of coolant
through new centralised coolant system
