Un’ostinata ambizione An obstinate ambition Manuel Orazi

Chelles è una delle più grandi municipalità della cintura orientale parigina, quella che si allarga verso est risalendo a ritroso il corso della Marna e tra le basse colline dell’Île-deFrance. Come nel caso di altre banlieu, Chelles ha incorporato nel suo tessuto alcune vestigia altomedievali anche se in maniera meno eclatante di Saint-Denis, dove in mezzo a uno dei sobborghi più problematici della capitale si staglia la cattedrale gotica in cui riposano i primi Re di Francia.

Chelles è invece un luogo più tranquillo, dall’atmosfera ancora vagamente fedele a quella bucolica amata da Victor Hugo che qui veniva spesso a passeggiare fra l’Abbazia merovingia e il castello o ciò che ne rimaneva1.

L’aria rassicurante che vi si respira è dovuta certo alla mancanza di conflitti sociali evidenti e a un alto livello di integrazione, oltre che a una certa razionalità della sua struttura urbana: dalla stazione della Rer si ha subito di fronte il mercato municipale e costeggiandolo si arriva al grande parco pubblico che conduce infine all’Hotel de Ville, alle scuole e ai resti monumentali dell’Abbazia. Chelles is one of the biggest municipalities on the eastern outskirts of Paris, in the belt which expands eastwards following the Marne upstream, surrounded by the low hills of Île-deFrance. Like many other suburbs, Chelles vaunts remains from the early Middle Ages, even if it is a matter of less conspicuous vestiges than Saint-Denis, where the Gothic cathedral where the first Kings of France are buried stands out against one of the capital’s most problem-ridden suburbs. Chelles is on the contrary a quiet place whose rural atmosphere still evokes the rural one loved by Victor Hugo, who often came here to walk among the Merovingian Abbey and the castle.1 The reassuring air one breathes here is both attributable to the lack of glaring social conflicts and the high level of integration, and to a quite rational urban structure: leaving the regional railway station, one immediately encounters the municipal market, and then a large public park, in whose vicinity one finds the town hall, the schools and the monumental rests of the Abbey. The surrounding townscape sports every kind of suburban home: single-family dwellings with or without gardens,

La progettazione del centro sportivo e della piazza centrale di Chelles, ha rappresentato l’occasione per usare l’architettura affrontando quelle questioni urbane che, con gli interventi precedenti, erano state lasciate da parte.

Il lotto è situato in una zona centrale tra il Parco in memoria di Emile Fouchard, il municipio, il liceo Weczerka e il centro per l’arte contemporanea “les églises” (le chiese): uno scenario eterogeneo nel quale si concentrano i simboli della città.

Queste unità più che ordinate davano l’impressione di essere allineate. Lo spazio aveva bisogno di un inserimento strategico di volumi e di un’idea che consentissero sia il completamento della storia che una nuova visione dell’insieme. Basandoci su questa osservazione, abbiamo considerato il progetto come un’operazione di riassemblaggio, dove il centro sportivo e la piazza interpretano il ruolo dell’articolazione. L’area occupata dall’edificio è parallela alle facciate della scuola e del municipio; ciò aiuta a ridefinire e a migliorare gli spazi urbani, così come a collegare il parco alla chiesa. Questi spazi sono disegnati in un modo convenzionale: regolari, circondati e 14

The design of the gymnasium and esplanade of central Chelles was an opportunity to use architecture to address urban issues that have been left aside in previous developments.

The plot is located centrally between Park of Remembrance Emile Fouchard, the town hall, the Weczerka high school, and the centre for contemporary art “les églises”: a heterogeneous backdrop where the symbols of the city are concentrated.

These pieces seemed juxtaposed rather than ordered. The space was in need of a strategic volumetric insertion, and an idea, contributing to the completion of the history and a new vision of the whole. Based on this observation, we considered the project as an operation of reassembly, in which the gym and esplanade play the role of articulation. The footprint of the building is parallel to the facades of the school and the town hall, this helps to redefine and enhance urban spaces, as well as to connect the park and church. These spaces, are drawn in a conventional manner: regular, surrounded and defined by buildings. The challenge lies in the renewal of the traditional vocabulary: very often with gyms, we deal with an opaque

Thanks to its formal simplicity and structural clarity, the Sports Centre inspires and spurs a reconsideration of the character of the public space in Chelles, as synthesis between architectonic and urban research.

Lo studio LAN (Local Architecture Network) è stato creato nel 2002 da Benoit Jallon e Umberto Napolitano, con l’idea di esplorare l’architettura in quanto ambito in cui confluiscono diverse discipline. Questo atteggiamento si è sviluppato presto in una metodologia, permettendo a LAN di esplorare nuovi territori e di incorporare nella propria visione questioni sociali, urbane, oltre che funzionali e formali. I progetti dello studio LAN cercano di fornire risposte a problemi contemporanei attraverso un vocabolario elegante e creativo.

“Il nostro linguaggio si inserisce nella tradizione delle architetture che abbiamo amato, degli architetti che ci hanno segnato, e vuole esserne un proseguo. Gli svizzeri, i catalani, i portoghesi, alcuni francesi, tutti quelli che credono che la materia affermi essa stessa una verità, che forgi un’atmosfera e sfidi il tempo.

Abbiamo affrontato tale questione diverse volte, e sempre abbiamo concepito i nostri progetti come trasmissione di tradizione e storia, un’opportunità per dare vita a nuove narrazioni.

Noi crediamo che l’architettura sia una disciplina attraverso la quale ci 58

si confronti su temi sociali, economici e culturali del mondo che ci circonda, e i nostri progetti cercano di fornire strategie per migliorarlo o cambiarlo.

Mi piace citare un passaggio della prefazione di Autobiografia scientifica di Aldo Rossi, in cui si afferma che in un mondo in cui tutte le funzioni sono in costante evoluzione, è la forma che perdura e presidia la costruzione. Tale concetto sottende la rottura con la logica funzionalista.

Attualmente stiamo lavorando proprio in questa direzione e preferiamo usare la parola “strategia” piuttosto che progetto o risposta.

Tale espressione racchiude il nostro intento di concepire un’architettura sovversiva, più duratura delle politiche che la generano, in grado di sopravvivere e suscettibile di cambiamento, di adattarsi a nuovi scenari, trascendendo il suo specifico utilizzo.

Ci piace pensare che alcuni dei nostri progetti siano lì per generare un potenziale, e che questa energia, questa capacità latente sia il nostro modo di rispondere ad un mondo che non ha fatto altro che generare rifiuti.”

LAN (Local Architecture Network) was created by Benoit Jallon and Umberto Napolitano in 2002, with the idea of exploring architecture as an area of activity at the intersection of several disciplines. This attitude has developed into a methodology enabling LAN to explore new territories and forge a vision encompassing social, urban, functional and formal questions. LAN’s projects seek to find elegant, contemporary answers to creative and pragmatic concerns.

Our language renews and continues the tradition of the architecture that we have admired and architects who have impressed us: the Swiss, the Catalans, the Portuguese, and a few Frenchmen – all those who believe that matter itself states a truth, forges an atmosphere and defies time.

We faced this issue several times, and have approached our projects as a translation of tradition and history, and opportunities to give birth to new stories.

We believe that architecture is a discipline with which we have to question the social, economic and cultural values of our world, and to try with our projects to improve and change them.

I’m fond of quoting a passage from the preface to Aldo Rossi’s A Scientific Autobiography, in which he affirmed that in a world in which functions are constantly changing, form transcends function. This is a way of acknowledging the break with functionalist logic, and distancing the project from its programme.

We are working in this direction today, and we use the word “strategy” instead of response or project.

A word that encapsulates our intent to conceive subversive architecture, stronger than its demand and more durable than the politics that generate it, an architecture that is invisibly ready to survive and adapt to change, that proposes novel scenarios and transcends its evolving use.

We like to think that some of our projects are there to generate potential, and that this energy, this latent capacity is our way of responding to a world which has done nothing but generate waste.
