MAY 2013—CHAMPIONSHIP EDITION

FRIENDS AND RIVALS RUSS GARVER AND PETER LOMONG GO 1-2 IN STATE 800.

FUMA TAKES IT TO THE WIRE IN BITTERSWEET END OF 2013 The 2013 VISAA State Track Championships turned into a dual meet between powerhouses Fork Union and Woodberry Forest. In the end, Woodberry outlasted FUMA by a margin of 15 points. It was the first championship for the Tigers since 1986. FUMA had championship efforts turned in by Clyde Gross, Russ Garver and two relay teams. The 4x800 set a new meet record of 7:54.66 topping Saint Christopher’s. Nemuel Okaah led off the effort with a personal best 2:01 and then the big three (Lomong, Lomong and Garver) took it from there. All three were under two minutes with Alex Lomong closing it out in 1:56.5. Peter Lomong and Garver returned later in the day and brought the house down in the 800 with a 1-2 finish. The 4x100 ran for redemption after the VPL and they got it with a 43.4 win. The effort of Malcolm Cook, Charles Clardy, Clyde Gross and Arnel Combs gave FUMA a fourth title in a row in the event. Junior Tyron McDade had a big day as well with a personal best 15.01 in the high hurdles and a season’s best 6’2 in the high jump. The day however belonged to Clyde Gross, his two wins in the hurdles and his relay heroics earned him the meet’s MVP award.

A seemingly lonely weekend at FUMA turned into the back drop of perhaps the best Prep League meet ever. FUMA figured to struggle against the deeper Tigers of Woodberry Forest in the six team meet. The home team got off to a great start in the field events and weathered many of Woodberry’s better events but in the end succumbed to a seven point defeat. The last time the Blue Devils lost a Prep League Meet on home soil was the 2004 Indoor Championship—to the Tigers. FUMA racked up wins from Clyde Gross (hurdles), Charlton Larkins (throws) and Russ Garver(800). Larkins has been among the more consistent performers on the year. Garver shook off the accelerated schedule in the 800 to claim his first ever title. Freshman Alex Lomong notched a huge personal best in the 400 with a 50.19, a performance that would win most years was good enough for fourth. The show stopper came in the 4x400 where WFS and FUMA both ran 3:24. Unfortunately, like the meet the Tigers were just a little ahead.
