SOPHOMORE ARNEL COMBS RUNS THE 1ST LEG OF THE 4X200

FUMA OUTDUELS WOODBERRY FOR STATE TITLE For the fifth time in the seven year history of the VISAA Indoor State Track and Field Championships the Fork Union track team returned home victorious. However, this edition was far more adventurous than the previous ones. The Blue Devils built a huge early lead and then held on for dear life as the Tigers of Woodberry Forest made a gallant charge. With two events to go in the schedule Woodberry took the lead. Russ Garver paced to a fourth place in the 3200 putting FUMA back on top. The day ended with second seeded FUMA destroying the field in the 4x400. The effort of the Lomong brothers along with Collin McLellan and Charles Clardy produced a season’s best by three seconds.

FUMA had tremendous efforts from all twenty—six athletes in the competition. Eighteen returned home as scorers in the meet. Leading the way for FUMA was junior Tyron McDade with 22 points. McDade registered three podium finishes for the Blue Devils. Malcolm Cook had 16 1/2 points including a win in the high jump and Charlton Larkins defended his title in the shot put. Clyde Gross won the high hurdles and scored in the 300.Youth served FUMA well on the day as sophomore Arnel Combs won the long jump and the Lomong brothers both finished second in their lone individual events. Champions again!

AS IT HAPPENED 9:20 am—FUMA arrives at Saint Christopher’s School. A big day lies ahead.

10:30 am—three field events begin, the shot put, long jump and high jump, all FUMA strongholds.

11:15 am—All three FUMA high jumpers are still in and the long jumpers all have season’s best jumps. At the shot put, Marc Uptegraff has a personal best by two feet. The Blue Devils are rolling.

11:30 am—FUMA goes 1-2-3 in the high jump and 1-3-4 in the long jump. Charlton Larkins goes over 51 feet and is on his way to defending his title. Jim Squatriglia throws his best ever and finishes third. Uptegraff stuns the field with a seventh place finish. Malcolm Cook, a recent UVA football signee ,is the surprise winner of the high jump. Sophomore Arnel Combs jumps 20’7 1/2 to win the title in the long jump. Tyron McDade puts up 14 critical points toward the title.

FUMA is up 38 points.

11:45 am—All three high hurdlers make the final led by Clyde Gross.

12:00 noon—The triple jump and pole vault get started.

12:15 pm—Malcolm Cook qualifies for the final of the 55 dash. Andrew Odenyo makes a comeback from injury but just misses qualifying for the final.

12:45 pm—Woodberry wins the 4x800, FUMA fails to score.

1:05 pm—Clyde Gross and Tyron McDade scorch the field in the hurdle final.

Newcomer Daquan Bynum finishes fourth. FUMA is now up 43 points.

1:15 pm—Catastrophe strikes the 55 dash as newcomer Malcolm Cook jumps the gun and is DQ’ed. Woodberry scores 23. The lead is now 20.

1:45 pm—Russ Garver finishes fourth in a very tactical 1600. Woodberry picks up 3 points. The lead is 22.

2:25 pm—The 4x200 runs a season’s best and finishes third. Woodberry sprinters continue their dominant day with a win. The lead is 18.

2:45 pm—The triple jump concludes with senior C.J. Landrom scoring a point.

Woodberry scores 6 points and the lead is 13.

3:00 pm— The pole vault finishes up along with the 500. Rains Mayfield jumps to a third place and Conrad Shewalter picks up a sixth. Woodberry rolls a double!. Alex Lomong has a fantastic performance in the 500(1:06.48) and gets second to Woodberry sensation Eric Ways. FUMA senior Nemuel Okaah drops 3 seconds off his best for sixth. The score is now FUMA 117.5 and WFS 113.5 3:40 pm—Peter Lomong finishes second in the 1,000. Woodberry grabs a 5th place. The lead for FUMA is 8.

4:20 pm—The 300 now looks like the pivotal event. Eric Ways and HT Minor grab 15 points for the Tigers while Clyde Gross and Collin McLellan get six for FUMA. Woodberry is now in the lead by 1.

5:00 pm—All eyes are on two runners. FUMA’s Russ Garver and Woodberry’s Robert Singleton.

5:00 pm—Russ Garver has one job in the race, stay in contact with the Woodberry runner. After 14 laps of contact, the seven year cadet takes off and puts 30 meters on the Tiger. As Russ makes his move, the runner in third falls down and Garver runs past him to get fourth. The Potomac runner manages to stagger in just ahead of Woodberry’s Singleton. With that chain of events FUMA is now back in the lead with just one event to go. FUMA 136.5 WFS 135.5 5:30 pm— Any track fan feels lucky to see a championship meet come down to the last event and the 2013 VISAA Indoor Championship will provide that occasion. FUMA is seeded second and Woodberry is seeded fifth. Super Sophomore Peter Lomong gets Fork Union in the lead with a 52.5 carry. Collin McLellan extends the lead with a 52.8. Collin has been a tremendous boost to the track team this winter. Next up is Charles Clardy. The talented junior runs his best time in the 400 to date and all that remains is the anchor leg and freshmen Alex Lomong. Though Saint Christopher’s anchor leg makes a gallant run at Alex, the final leg of 52.3 gives FUMA the relay win in 3:31.41 and the team championship. Woodberry finishes fifth. Final tally—
