“Every day, regardless of what is going on around me, I will see a cadet from the Middle School, and a smile immediately follows. As a group, they take the “military” aspects of Fork Union Military Academy very seriously, yet none takes anything too seriously. We are blessed indeed to have these young men on our campus. We are making every effort to ensure our Middle School is “full” next year, and anticipate beginning the 2014-2015 school year with at least 90 MS students. We are confident we’ll meet this goal. I plan to spend as much time as possible over the Christmas Break with family…and particularly look forward to giving many books and toys to my grandchildren, and having long conversations with my mother. This is a time to count our many blessings, and to acknowledge that those blessings are gifts from God. One of his many gifts to us was his son Jesus, which makes it easy to celebrate this season of giving. Merry Christmas!”

Headmaster’s Message As we prepare for the hustle and bustle of the upcoming Christmas season, I encourage us all to take time out of our busy schedules to remember the true “Reason for the Season.” Jesus Christ, God’s perfect gift to us, is our reason to celebrate. During this season of gift giving and receiving, may we be truly thankful for the greatest gift of all. On behalf of the Middle School faculty and staff, I wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year!

CADETS VOLUNTEER AT CHURCH’S “RESPITE DAY” Four of our cadets recently volunteered their Saturday to assist with a “Respite Day” at PCC – Riverside, a local church attended by many of our cadets. This day involved supervising activities for children with disabilities in our local community so that their parents could have the day off to go shopping or just to enjoy time for themselves. Cadets Tyson Marlow, John Meheen, Scott Robel, and Thomas Snow arrived at the church at 10 a.m. and stayed until 4:00 p.m. They helped the children color and make crafts and also played games with them. All of the cadets who participated agreed that they really enjoyed being “buddies” to the 19 children who attended this event. Mrs. Karen Feathers, the coordinator of this community event, was impressed by the maturity of our cadets and appreciative of their willingness to volunteer their time. Each of the cadets who participated said afterward that they

Operation Christmas Child From the Operation Christmas Child website: “Since 1993, more than 100 million boys and girls in over 130 countries have experienced God’s love through the power of simple shoebox gifts from ‘Operation Christmas Child’. Samaritan’s Purse works with local churches and ministry partners to deliver the gifts and share the life-changing Good News of Jesus Christ.”

As she has in past years, Ms. Fick, our Activities Coordinator, again orchestrated the packing of many shoeboxes for this very worthwhile program. Our Middle School cadets were involved in donating money for this project, shopping for toys, packing boxes, writing notes, and wrapping the presents up to be sent to children around the world.

In all, 19 Christmas shoeboxes were stuffed with surprises by our cadets. Two of the shoeboxes were marked for tracking, so in a future issue we will let you know where those boxes landed. Our prayer is that children who wouldn’t otherwise experience joy at Christmas time will experience God’s love through the opening of the shoeboxes sent to them.

My One Wish for the World

By Zac Miller, Bayonet Reporter If I could make one wish that affects the entire world it would be for no person to go hungry. 842 million people in the world do not have enough to eat. One out of six children, roughly 100 million children, in developing countries is underweight. This is because of their lack of food. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that nearly 870 million people of the 7.1 billion people in the world were suffering from chronic undernourishment in 2010-2012. This is one in eight people. We need to help this fact of life. This wish will not come true, but you can help to stop hunger in the world.

Just go to www.freerice.com to help stop hunger. For every question you get right they donate 10 grains of rice through the World Food Program. Help the world in this fight to end hunger.

“The Dillard Guard� Marches in the Appomattox Christmas Parade On Saturday, Dec. 7th, the Middle School's marching drill team, "The Dillard Guard", represented Fork Union Military Academy at the annual Appomattox Christmas parade. "The Dillard Guard", led by Cadet Major Jonathan Ilori (and sponsored by LTC Feathers), is comprised of cadets in grades 6-8. Cadets on the Guard must maintain good grades and conduct to participate. They practice during their free time and enjoy opportunities to march in parades off-campus during the year. Several parades are scheduled for the spring.

Blue Man Group On November 14 a busload of cadets, comprised of both Middle and Upper School boys, traveled with LTC Feathers to Charlottesville’s John Paul Jones Arena to enjoy an evening of entertainment. Starring that evening was “The Blue Man Group”, a group that defies description. Combining visual arts with music, technology, audience participation, and humor, “The Blue Man Group” offered a show that kept our rapt attention for over two hours. Comprised of three “Blue Men” and a rhythm band, this act has its own off -Broadway Show and a traveling group. They are known around the world for their phenomenal shows. All of us really enjoyed getting off campus to enjoy this evening of fun.

King’s Dominion Trip

by Hardy Pemberton On Saturday, October 26, CPT Butt and his family took a group of twelve Cadets to King’s Dominion.

We all had a lot of fun and rode tons of rides. The park was having “Halloween Haunt”, and Brennan Stone and I went through a really scary haunted house called “No Vacancy”. After about 6:00 or 7:00 pm, a bunch of the staff dressed up as monsters and other scary creatures. I got chased by a zombie.

Halloween Haunt is a great time to visit King’s Dominion for a hauntingly good time!

Monticello and Michie Tavern Trip

He was a tall guy!!

On November 13th, all of the cadets except cadets with an Unsatisfactory Conduct level went to Monticello. We took a tour of his house and saw lots of cool things, such as a dumbwaiter in the wall that brought up wine from the wine cellar, a clock that could tell the days of the week, and his gardens and plantation. My favorite part was going into the cellar under Monticello and seeing how the dumbwaiters worked.

We also went to Michie Tavern and took a tour of the guest rooms, the ballroom/church, and the bar room. The Ordinary was their kitchen and we ate the amazing fried chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, black-eyed peas, and more. It was a great trip!

FOOD DRIVE 2013 Update A recent Academy-wide service project resulted in the collection of 6,260 lbs. of food for the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. The Middle School effort pitted "Alpha" Co., "Bravo" Co., and the faculty all against each other in a friendly competition to see which unit could collect the most food. "Bravo" Co. won the competition hands down. A big "THANK YOU" to all who donated to this food drive!
