The President

his year, Fork Union Military Academy celebrated its 120th birthday! Though we now live in a smaller world, Fork Union Military Academy still educates and inspires young men in an extraordinary way, set in motion over a century ago by our founder, Dr. Hatcher. Our cadets, from 7th graders to PGs, continue to develop their body, mind, and spirit just as generations of FUMA alumni did when they were here. I am certain that Dr. Hatcher would be happy to know that we pledge, pray, do push-ups, and teach physics.

Together, the faculty, staff and I are ramping up the military intensity, academic excellence, athletic focus, and spiritual development at Fork Union. For example, I have directed that we invest more human and financial resources into our Retan Rifles. Those of you who have missed seeing our young men perform high-level military-style drills will not be disappointed. I invite one and all to come back for Alumni Speaker Day in March or to Alumni Weekend in May and see for yourself all the good things going on at your Academy.

While I wish kids could attend FUMA for free, from a business perspective that’s not practical or feasible. The Academy has been blessed with supporters who have invested in the future of these fine young men, who, like you, enable and perpetuate our goodness. We need more of you to join your fellow alumni and friends to share your time and treasure to help us help the boys. We are going to grow.

2018 Scholarship Winner - Bradley Sund, Jr. James Bradley Sund, Jr. is a freshman from Raleigh, North Carolina and is this year’s recipient of the Board of Trustees Scholarship.

Bradley has aspirations to attend Duke University, West Point or The Citadel, and hopes to serve in the Marine Corps, as well as become an engineer.

Since arriving at Fork Union, he has participated in both Prep and Jr. Prep Soccer and is currently working on off-season training. He looks forward to joining the Golf team in the spring and possibly Orienteering.

“So far my favorite thing about this school has been the atmosphere. All of the faculty and cadets are positive and ready to help. I remember at the beginning of the year as we were running the mile for fitness testing, one kid fell behind and almost gave up but then our entire company came to his side and followed him as he crossed the finish line. This moment stood out to me and showed me how the cadets treat their peers as brothers and with high respect.”

Bradley really enjoyed his first-term class, Honors Western Civics, and is looking forward to what the rest of the year has in store.

A GYM RENOVATED.

A Legend Honored.

ne of the most significant capital projects on campus at Fork Union Military Academy this fall of 2018 was the renovation of the M. C. Thomas Gymnasium.

Construction of Thomas Gym was completed in 1949, and the building has seen lots of use in the nearly 70 years since then. Generations of cadets have competed in and cheered on epic basketball contests within its walls; watched many movies, plays, and concerts on its stage; and have generally made heavy use of the building daily since 1949. The basketball court itself had withstood the pounding of countless millions of steps, dribbles, and jump shots.

The facility was clearly in need of a facelift, or perhaps a bit of heavy reconstructive surgery.

Of equal importance to the need for physical improvements to Thomas Gymnasium, was the desire to honor a FUMA legend—the longtime head coach of the postgraduate basketball team, Fletcher Arritt, who had compiled an amazing record of 890 wins, 283 losses, in his nearly five decades of service on those hardwood boards before his retirement in 2012. The Academy community was united in the determination that if the Thomas Gymnasium was to get a new hardwood playing surface, it was going to be named in honor of Coach Fletcher Arritt.

There was only one person in Fork Union who objected to that idea—Fletcher Arritt.

Coach Arritt, as well-known for his humble spirit as for his basketball prowess, withdrew his objection when he learned that the new basketball court would be named to also honor

his wife and partner of more than fifty years: the Fletcher and Betty Jean Arritt Basketball Court.

Plans for the Arritt Court project were announced in December 2017, and the public phase of the fundraising campaign was kicked off in February 2018 at an event sponsored by a longtime friend of the Arritt family, Charles Wendell, owner of Charlottesville’s Marriott Residence Inn. Wendell grew up in Fayetteville, West Virginia, and both he and Fletcher played sports under Fletcher’s father, Coach Fletcher Arritt, Sr. Charles Wendell hosted the campaign kick-off reception at his Charlottesville hotel and presented the Academy with a $25,000 check to go towards the Arritt Court.

Fundraising continued in earnest throughout the spring and early summer, with the effort led by FUMA’s Athletic Director, Brooks Berry, and Tim Redden, the Academy’s Director of Development. One annonymous donor made the largest individual donation to the campaign, while other major donors included former NBA and UNC player Shammond Williams, who played for Coach Arritt, as well as many other former players and coaches throughout the basketball world. A number of new donors to Fork Union Military Academy stepped forward to assist in this fundraising effort, with more than 100 pledges received.

“We’ve brought in new donors who want to give back, not only to update a facility that has been in need of a facelift,” said FUMA’s Athletic Director Brooks Berry, “but to be able to honor the coach who brought young men to this school with dreams in their minds, and helped them achieve their goals.”

By June 2018, the nearly $500,000 needed for the interior and exterior renovations of Thomas Gymnasium was in hand and the work was underway.

On the exterior of the gymnasium, the lintels above the windows were replaced, the windows 5

themselves were refurbished and the frames repainted, and the entire exterior surface was re-parged, making the outside of the building like new again. A new rainwater management system was installed to improve the gutters and add new downspouts to protect the building’s exterior. On the inside, the entranceway was reconditioned and a new “Wall of Fame” was added honoring Coach Fletcher Arritt’s career. The former sewing room was converted into a meeting room complete with a flat-screen television on which teams could view game film. The interior walls were repainted, the stage area was remodeled to provide room to extend the new basketball court to full regulation size, padding was added to the interior walls at the ends of the playing court, and new high-efficiency lighting was installed to brighten the interior and light the playing surface better.

Finally, a completely new subfloor and hardwood basketball court was constructed. The playing surface was painted with lines showing both the high school and college 3-point lines. And on the spot where Coach Fletcher Arritt so famously stood while coaching (in perhaps his only consistent violation of the game’s rules), actually on the playing court itself, a few feet in front of the home team bench, two shoe prints were painted as a permanent reminder of Coach Fletcher Arritt’s presence.

“A lot of people at Fork Union may not realize just how big of a deal Fletcher Arritt is in the basketball world,” Brooks Berry explains. But college coaches all around the nation know just how deserving Coach Arritt is to be recognized for his lifetime of service to this school and to the game of basketball.”

respected Fletcher Arritt for many years. When Bob Knight wanted an evaluation of his son Patrick, he took him to Fork Union to workout for Coach Arritt. Tubby Smith and Dave Odom both sent sons to FUMA to play for Arritt.

the alumni and friends of the Academy helped enshrine the memory and honor the service of two of the giants of Fork Union on whose shoulders we stand today, Fletcher and Betty Jean Arritt.

“No coach that I’ve been aware of during my time in basketball,” states Hall of Fame college coach Bob Knight, “did a better job of preparing kids for college than Fletcher did with his kids at Fork Union. I think he has made a tremendous contribution to the game of basketball, a contribution that is worthy of consideration to the Hall of Fame.”

If you were to visit Fayetteville, West Virginia, population 2,754, you might notice today that the Pirates of Fayetteville High School play their football games in the Fletcher Arritt Memorial Stadium. The football stadium is not named for the starting quarterback and multi-sport athlete, Fletcher M. Arritt, Jr., who played there in the late 1950s. No, it is named in honor of his father, Fletcher M. Arritt, Sr., one of West Virginia’s most respected high school football coaches (who, as it happens, also taught biology, just like his son).

Billy Donovan, now head coach of the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder and former coach of the University of Florida Gators whose teams won consecutive NCAA National Championships in 2006 and 2007, stated it simply: “He has to go down as one of the greatest coaches of all time.”

And so, with this relatively small capital project, less than $500,000 in total, the benefactors of Fork Union Military Academy accomplished more than giving a physical facelift to an important campus building. With their cash donations,

Fork Union’s mission is to educate and develop young men to help them be successful in college and beyond.

Below is a story of Boey Chen, a recent graduate who is achieving his goals, and looking toward the future.

We asked him to share with us his stories, and we hope you enjoy reading about his Fork Union experience and how it helped drive him to success.

I am a FUMA class of 2016 alumnus currently attending college at The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina. I was born and raised in Beijing, China and FUMA was the first and only high school I have attended in the United States.

When I arrived I barely knew how to speak English and didn’t know much about American culture. I attended summer school before my first year at FUMA which was crucial for me because I not only learned how to speak English, but it also allowed me to learn about American culture. Even though FUMA was a pathway with strict regulations, it guided my steps every day and taught me to notice and enjoy the little things in life.

When you look back on your time at FUMA, what do you think about?

I attended FUMA summer school before the actual school year began, and that gave me a closer look at the school and the things I would encounter during the school year. I knew the first year would be confusing and challenging for me because that was my first year in U.S. as well as first year in an English environment. However, my roommate at the time and Mrs. Giszack helped me a lot with not only familiarizing the school and the classes but also getting “Americanized.” FUMA and I had a lovehate relationship at times, but I think it was essential for my leadership development and the friendships I made there have always been a strong bond and continue to influence me today. I learned from everything, and even negative experiences showed me how to learn from mistakes and develop resilience.

What is your favorite memory from FUMA? I would say my best memory at FUMA was the Sunday chapel time. To be honest, I am not a religious person, but I loved every minute we spent in the chapel on Sundays.

I loved singing with every cadet at FUMA along with Chaplin Benson and COL Williamson and even President RADM Burhoe. For me, I considered it as a peaceful time for my mind and body to rest from the weekly stress of homework, quizzes, tests and hard work. Chaplain Benson also taught me a lot about Christianity and gave me many influential life lessons in regard to being a better young man and standing out among other teenagers from ordinary high schools.

Do you think FUMA helped prepare you for college?

How? The FUMA lifestyle and disciplined military lifestyle is what really helped me to prepare for college life. My FUMA summer school supervisor who was a FUMA grad and a Citadel grad once told that three things could lead me to be successful at college and FUMA: hard work, academics and discipline. Coincidentally, FUMA teaches us how to do all three things at the same time. The lifestyle at FUMA is structured to force cadets to discipline themselves to avoid punishment and to receive rewards.

Although lots of people hated the consequences at the time, I can see clearly now that the experience influenced me so much. For instance, since I graduated from FUMA, I always use polite words like sir and ma’am to answer and ask questions; I always keep myself squared away with personal appearance, and I always show respect not only

to my boss but also to my peers and subordinates. These things were never directly taught at FUMA, but the way of life as a FUMA cadet and the positive discipline of the structured environment engraved them in me. The FUMA environment establishes and reinforces positive habits that powerfully change the mindset and attitude of many FUMA cadets, including myself.

time management, and work ethic will follow me for the rest of my life. I do these things like care for personal appearance subconsciously because I have been practicing for three years, so they have now become a habit that helps me to stand out among my peers.

Being a cadet at The Citadel is similar to being a cadet at FUMA and soon I will be commissioning to the US Army.

This is because the military for me is not a day by day profession or job; it is a lifestyle. A disciplined lifestyle is one of FUMA’s core values, and I will always live up to those core values in my daily life. Learning how to take care of my personal appearance before going into the military college is what set me up to have a great first impression on my cadre and TAC officer at The Citadel.

One of the things that I appreciate most about my FUMA experience is the friendships I made. Sometimes, being influenced by friends is the best way to realize the problems with myself and to humble myself. The true friendships I made at FUMA are with people I knew would not put peer pressure on me to do the wrong things like getting in a fight, smoking or drinking. Instead, these friendships were established by trust—the trust I got from knowing that the moment I needed help someone would show up to help, and the moment I was about to do the wrong thing, someone would show up to correct me. A FUMA friend is not like a Facebook friend or a random Instagram follower; it is a life-long lasting trustworthy bond, and this bond is not created by one day or one late-night talk. Instead, it is the reward we get from the years that we spent together going through the good times and the tough times as FUMA brothers.

If at all, how did FUMA change you or develop you?

In my junior year, I was honored to be selected as a company 1SG and that experience of 1SG really allowed me to develop as a better leader as well as improving my social skills, especially when dealing with enforcing rules with my own classmates when they decided to do the wrong thing. As a 1GT I spent a lot of time with TAC officers, especially COL Fender. He taught me how to develop as a leader myself and, more importantly, how to develop other people to become leaders by the influence of my actions.

Is your time at FUMA an experience you would credit your success to?

FUMA taught me not only how to be a successful student at college but more importantly, it taught me how to become a leader with character. The life at FUMA is not fun but the disciplined lifestyle really helped me to establish good habits—something most high school students do not have. Those good habits that I learned at FUMA such as taking care of personal appearance,

Did you create lasting friendships?

What advice can you offer to current cadets to help them understand the importance of a good education, as well as how FUMA can benefit their future success?

The best advice I can give to current cadets is to be resilient in your plan and to remember that nothing worth having comes easily. The time at FUMA may feel frustrating, tough and annoying but the rewarding bonds you create at FUMA will stay with you forever. The “great time” you spend at FUMA will forever be one of the highlights of your life after you graduate. All you must remember is that there is one thing even FUMA can never do, and that is to stop time. Time at FUMA might feel slow, but it is passing faster than you think and you will soon finish the journey!

How we decided, and the impact it has had on our family

The decision to send our sons to Fork Union was a very difficult one. We live in California with no close family or connections to Virginia, so having our kids attend a school so far away from home was not just difficult, but emotionally overwhelming.

ur Fork Union story began in 2014 with our oldest son, Stanley. He was attending the local public high school and by all measures was a successful student. However, we felt his passion and motivation did not match his collegiate goals.

Something was missing, and we were not sure what it was.

We began looking into the local private schools for the best fit. Many of Stanley’s friends from his elementary school years attended two of the local private schools we were considering. In the end, we felt that a local private school would not be the best fit for Stanley, as it would be more of the same.

We wanted our son to be challenged, forced outside of his comfort zone, and to become more

Finally, the idea of sending him to a military boarding school hit my husband like a ton of bricks. Even though we both served in the army, a military high school had never crossed our minds.

After weeks of searching online and discussing different options with family members, we began to narrow the search to military boarding schools on the west coast. However, Fork Union continued to be listed in the top of every search result or articles we read. It became clear that FUMA was everything we were looking for in a school and an environment for our son; except that it was 3,000 miles away from home! In the end, we made a list of the most important things we wanted for our son and Fork Union was the clear choice: strong academics, highly qualified teachers, a track record of success, diverse student body and a school philosophy grounded in a belief that matched our family values.

We registered Stanley in FUMA to begin his junior year. We were worried he would have a hard time adjusting; however, he quickly made new friends, joined a few clubs and tried out for the basketball team. Things were looking good. Stanley was excited and he had things to do outside the norm. We finally felt we had made the right choice.

Senior year went by quickly. He was accepted into several universities close to home. Ultimately though, he selected the Naval Academy Preparatory School and is currently completing his sophomore year at the United States Naval Academy (USNA).

When we recently asked him to describe his experience at FUMA, we were not shocked to hear his response. He stated, “FUMA was an amazing place for my development as a young man. It required my best effort at all times and fostered the values of hard work and determination I learned from my parents. I truly believe I would not be the

person I am today, without attending Fork Union.”

Additionally, he gained a great deal from the “pride and passion the teachers and staff displayed in the classroom every day.”

We had such a positive experience with Stanley at FUMA that when it came time for our youngest son, Xavier, to enter high school, we knew he would be attending FUMA. We enrolled Xavier at the beginning of his freshman year.

Currently Xavier is a junior at Fork Union. He has been involved in leadership since his freshman year and is the executive officer of Echo Company.

The opportunity to mentor underclassmen has been challenging, but extremely valuable in his development as a leader. Unlike his older brother, Xavier has a different perspective having spent his entire high school experience at FUMA. He has created a bond with his classmates over the past two years and has participated in several sports and clubs. Xavier is fairly headstrong and does not necessarily want to follow in his brothers’ footsteps.

However, he agrees that FUMA is the best place for him and that the lessons he learns in class, through leadership, and on the field are preparing him for college and beyond.

In the end, the choice of “why FUMA” was replaced by a strong feeling of thankfulness for FUMA. The teachers, staff, and fellow cadets have all contributed to an environment that has helped mold our sons into smart and respectful young men. We know our story is not unique amongst former and current FUMA cadets and their families. However, for any families considering sending their son to Fork Union; know that he will be safe, challenged, meet new friends from diverse backgrounds, learn how to both lead and follow, and become a better version of himself. You will not regret the decision.

A MESSAGE FROM

The CFO

I am thrilled to be here, and excited about the things we’ll be working on in the near future. I have served in the military for 21 years and over the past six years I have been at the collegiate level as a professor, operational business planner, and a director of admissions at a Senior Military College. Each position involved developing leaders, direct oversight of budget development and strategy, managing scholarships and endowments.

When making my decision to join the Fork Union team, three areas stood out most: 1) Fork Union is as good as, and actually better than, other schools I witnessed working in admissions, and yet we still have not tapped our full potential; 2) The positive attitude the team provides in developing educational opportunities for cadets to become adaptive, and innovative leaders of character; and 3) A world class alumni base any school would be proud to have. In fact, I am so impressed with the school my own son is now wearing a cadet uniform and will graduate in May of 2019.

My intent is to ensure the Academy as a whole is continuously improving. Metrics and instrumentation are integral in this goal — what are the key drivers of our Academy, and how are they performing? — but much more of it is just understanding how the whole Academy works, which parts have the most opportunity to impact overall performance, and helping to drive the needed change to make sure we’re always doing the best we can.

My passion is to dive deeply into operations and find ways to enhance effectiveness and efficiency by improving systems and streamlining processes through diligence preparation of financial models,

forecasts, budgets, and business plans.

In regard to the current school year, our financial plan continues to focus on fulfilling the school’s mission sustainably. We are making progress, but we need to remain diligent in balancing the relative rates of expense and revenue growth, as there may be softness in the Academy’s revenue streams at a time of limited student growth.

We will be closely monitoring our budget performance and forecasts. Our financial plan provides flexibility for adjusting to changes, while continuing to invest in mission-driven innovation, Cadet recruiting and retention, teaching and research, and campus development.

We have a great team at Fork Union and I am excited to build upon the team as we continue to develop the institution into a premier Christian military academy. Our plan is to grow the Corps of Cadets, provide the team the resources they need and deliver the highest quality product to achieve our goals.

My wife, Melanie and I have been married for 32 years and have two sons: Zachary, a Captain in the US Army soon to be stationed in Vicenza, Italy and Caleb, who will graduate in May from FUMA. I am looking forward to the amazing opportunity of serving as your CFO. Lead, Transform, Execute.

Planned Giving

One of the major shifts the Academy would like to make in the next ten years is doubling the list of those who have committed a planned gift, securing the future of the Academy. We thank alumni, friends, parents, past parents, grandparents, and trustees who have made this commitment and guaranteed the resources the Academy needs to prepare the next generation of cadets for success.

Just prior to the 2017-18 school year, Fork Union suffered the loss of Ms. Betty Rebecca (Becky) Raff Raisner. Becky Raisner founded a memorial scholarship after her husband, Giles B. Raisner, Jr. class of 44, passed in 1997. Through a planned stock gift in Giles Estate, Becky was able to fully endow the Giles B. Raisner, Jr. Memorial Scholarship. After Becky’s passing in July, the Academy discovered she continued their legacy of giving by donating an Ohio property and vehicle to the Academy in her estate. Planned gifts such as this continue to foster the growth and continuation of Fork Union’s mission each year.

The Academy is thankful to the Raisner family and for those listed below who recognize the importance of planned gifts to helping Fork Union educate develop and inspire young men. The individuals listed below are leaving a legacy though a planned gift that will help countless young men receive the most rewarding education.

The Academy is thankful for this very special type of gift. Supporters that recognize members of our Fork Union Family past and present, not only support the advancement of our mission, but also honor cherished loved ones, mentors, teachers and cadets that make the Academy what it is today. Fork Union Military Academy was saddened this year by the passing of longtime Academy supporter and alumnus Barry E. Saunders, class of 1951. With over 17 years of giving history to the Academy, Mr. Saunders’ family continued to honor his memory by requesting gifts to the Academy’s Access Scholarships in lieu of flowers and cards in his passing. With over 52 gifts received in his name, the love for this excellent man was felt by the Academy. We are grateful for all those who gave in memory of Mr. Barry E. Saunders, and for those who gave in honor or memory of a loved one.

ndowed scholarships, awards, or positions are critical to guaranteeing that Fork Union Military Academy will continue to be the best college preparatory, Christian, military school in the nation. Below is a listing of the endowed scholarships that help young men attend Fork Union by providing over $250,000 in scholarship opportunities for cadets each year. Founded by generous and devoted supporters of Fork Union, we are grateful to honor the individuals and groups named below and to be able to provide merit and access scholarships to young men each year. MR. EDSEL “JACK” LESTER SCHOLARSHIP Founded in honor of Mr. Lester ‘51 to provide scholarships to cadets who have a financial need.

RETON EDGERTON SCHOLARSHIP Created in honor of the Academy’s first music director, this scholarship is awarded to a band or choir member each year.

MRS. SHIRLEY WRIGHT LESTER Founded in honor of Mrs. Lester to provide scholarships to young men who demonstrate need and display academic excellence.

HERBERT C. MOSELEY SCHOLARSHIP Named in memory of long-time Trustee Herbert C. Mosley, this scholarship supports academically qualified young men who are returning to Fork Union.

ALFRED H. KOELLER JR. SCHOLARSHIP Founded by Mr. Kenneth B. Koeller ‘51 to honor his brother’s memory and provide young men who demonstrate a strong desire to attend FUMA with scholarships.

T. FIELDS MONTGOMERY SCHOLARSHIP Donated by Mr. and Mrs. George Turner, in memory of Mrs. Turner’s father who was a dedicated supporter of education.

This scholarship provides support for a cadet to attend through his senior year.

ANTHONY LAZIZZA SCHOLARSHIP Named in memory of long-time music director Anthony Lazizza, this scholarship supports a band or choir member each year.

GUS LACY ALUMNI AWARD Created in honor of Gus Lacy for his service to the Academy’s Development Department, this scholarship is awarded each year by the Alumni Board to a rising junior.

ROSIE THOMAS SCHOLARSHIP Named for famed Athletic Director Rosie Thomas, this scholarships supports athletes at Fork Union Military Academy.

GREENBRIER SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship was formed by the Greenbrier Alumni Association to ensure that Greenbrier’s spirit lived on after the schools closing. Each year a rising junior is selected to receive this scholarship.

MICHAEL SCOTT HAMBY SCHOLARSHIP Founded by Mr. Hamby’s parents in 1998, this scholarship is given to the cadet who has exhibited the greatest improvement in attitude and/or self-esteem since arriving at Fork Union.

COACH BILL BLAIR POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship, named in honor of Coach Blair, supports Postgraduate football players who seek to attend Fork Union.

LIN BATES SCHOLARSHIP Founded by Mrs. Nancy B. Bates and named in memory of her husband who graduated FUMA in 1948, this scholarship supports an outstanding returning cadet.

GILES B. RAISNER JR. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship, named in memory of Mr. Raisner ‘44, is awarded to a young man who demonstrates scholastic achievement and integrity.

VERNON THOMAS MORGAN SCHOLARSHIP Endowed by Ms. Margaret Harmon, this scholarship supports an outstanding athlete.

FRED HOFFMAN SCHOLARSHIP Awarded to the quartermaster assistant each year, this scholarship is named in memory of longtime quartermaster Fred Hoffman.

JAMAL THOMAS SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship was founded by Justice Clarence Thomas, and named in honor of his son. This scholarship is awarded to a cadet who has a real financial need.

CLASS OF 1955 SCHOLARSHIP Founded by the class of 1955, this class scholarship honors their legacy as alumni while helping a new generation of young men attend Fork Union.

PAUL FREDERICK COBB SCHOLARSHIP Founded by Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Cobb and named in memory of his brother who was killed in action during Vietnam, this scholarship is awarded to a young man who demonstrates leadership and integrity.

EDWARD A. PAYNE SCHOLARSHIP Named in honor of Mr. Payne, a former mathematics teacher at Fork Union, this scholarship is awarded to a cadet who shows integrity, character, leadership, humility and patriotism.

WHITMAN B. WIATT SCHOLARSHIP Founded by Susan Wiatt and John Wiatt in memory of Whitman Wiatt, and is awarded to a cadet who demonstrates integrity, character, leadership, and kindness.

JACK HARING SCHOLARSHIP Mr. Haring graduated FUMA in 1952.

His wife founded this scholarship in his memory.

CHARLES ROGERS SCHOLARSHIP Founded in memory of TAC Officer Charles Rogers, who graduated as a postgraduate from Fork Union, this scholarship is awarded to a postgraduate basketball player.

CLASS OF 1954 SCHOLARSHIP To honor their 50th reunion, the Class of 1954 established this scholarship to help young men who demonstrate leadership at Fork Union Military Academy.

GEORGE & LEEDA CURRIN SCHOLARSHIP Established by Mr. & Mrs. Currin ‘54, this scholarship supports young men who have a financial need and wish to attend Fork Union.

GUY E. BEATTY SCHOLARSHIP Founded by one of the schools strongest and most generous supporters, this scholarship provides funds for young men who need it most.

JOEL T. BROYHILL SCHOLARSHIP Mr. Broyhill graduated Fork Union in 1939, and served in congress for 11 terms. This scholarship supports young men who need assistance attending Fork Union Military Academy.

PERCY FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP Donated by Stewart Percy ’59 and Chad Percy ’83 to honor their grandson and son Spencer Percy ’06, this scholarship supports postgraduate football players GREG LACOUR SCHOLARSHIP Founded to provide a scholarship to a deserving upper school cadet who exhibits the highest cadet standards and who demonstrates the greatest promise to be a future leader in the Corps of Cadets.

CURTIS POWELL SCHOLARSHIP Named in memory of Mr. Powell ’05, who led Fork Union’s football team as captain.

This scholarship supports a prep football player who demonstrates excellence on and off the field.

MAJOR CRAIG MOON ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP Founded by his mother, Mrs. Marion Moon, this scholarship is awarded to cadets who show integrity, character, leadership, and humility.

LT. GENERAL JOHN E. JACKSON, JR. LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP Founded in honor of Lt. Gen. Jackson and his wife Barbara by Mr. & Dr. Callaway, this scholarship is given to a young man who demonstrates extraordinary leadership qualities and character.

FLETCHER ARRITT SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship was founded by friends of Coach Arritt ‘60 who wanted to honor his retirement. This scholarship supports Postgraduate Basketball players.

JUSTIN STUART EDELL SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship, founded by Dr. & Mrs. Dean Edell in honor of their son, provides a merit scholarship to a cadet who has attended since his sophomore year and has the highest grade in mathematics.

JON RICHARDSON ACCESS SCHOLARSHIP Founded by his estate and supported by his wife and father, this scholarship provides much needed scholarship support to young men who wish to attend the Academy and who demonstrate a financial need.

DWYER FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP Founded by Mr. & Mrs. Paul Dwyer ’76, this scholarship will help a young man who will benefit from attending Fork Union Military Academy, and exhibits character and academic excellence.

CLASS OF 1952 SCHOLARSHIP Founded by the estate of a 1952 graduate, this scholarship supports young men who demonstrate need.

WILLIAM F. ROWE III SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is awarded to a rising senior at the Academy who demonstrates financial need, and who adheres to and embodies the Academy’s principles and motto of Body, Mind Spirit.

COL R. L. & MRS. PATSY PULLIAM SCHOLARSHIP Founded by alumni and friends who wanted to honor COL & Mrs. Pulliam’s long-time dedication to Fork Union Military Academy, this scholarship is awarded to a young man who demonstrates friendliness, thoughtfulness, high moral values and good sportsmanship.
