Your generosity last year allowed us to continue educating, developing, and inspiring young men in this college preparatory, Christian, military environment. Your gifts helped cadets build character and learn leadership, independence, confidence, and responsibility. Along the way, cadets also made friends who will be lifelong brothers. This hasn’t changed, and it never will. There are too few places where young men can get what they really need to succeed in today’s world. Smartphones are everywhere [except here], and recent studies show that young people would rather interact with others through their electronic devices than face-to-face. We still emphasize respect, integrity, faith, character, and discipline. These values are modeled by our faculty and staff. Fork Union Military Academy provides a sanctuary built on old fashioned values. We require all cadets to be physically fit, and the academic offerings are challenging. Fork Union is more challenging than ever, and still influences young men to make difficult decisions and grow as a result of the choices they make. Too many young men today are looking for an easy path to success. At Fork Union, success is earned, and requires personal sacrifice and effort, and it also requires courage.

Give Back Through Community Service

ork Union Military Academy has always been a Christian school, where emphasis has been placed on growing each young man in spirit, just as we grow them in mind and body. Part of that spiritual growth includes learning how to put your Christian faith into action. Young men at Fork Union who are driven by purpose and called to lead are learning how to be examples in their communities, by giving selflessly and caring for others. Fork Union has always offered cadets extracurricular activities that encourage service to others. In recent years, those clubs and organizations have grown, including the addition of an academic class that offers a focus on Christian service. Interact Club is the international high school affiliate organization of Rotary International. Founded in 2011 by CSM Catherine Garcia and her husband Mr. Rudy Garcia, the Interact Club has grown to be one of the most popular clubs on campus. In its first year alone, the club participated in

about 200 service hours, and now, six years later, participates in over 1,200 community service hours each year. Being a part of a larger organization helps cadets understand the importance of leadership, and shows them how small groups of individuals can make a significant impact when they work together. Interact Club is always looking for ways to help others, and cadets love getting off campus to volunteer. Last year they participated in over 45 projects, and have already started work this year on projects for hurricane and earthquake relief as well as their annual End Polio campaign. Each year they participate in projects such as Homework Helpers, where they travel to the local public schools and help younger children with their homework; Rise Against Hunger, where cadets and other volunteers package meals for those who need them, and many more. A couple of years ago the club also started exam day bake sales to raise funds for projects they were working on, such as Stop Hunger Now or disaster relief funds. These bake sales are unique to Fork

Union, as cadets love the pick-me-up before they take their exams, and the proceeds go to helping others. Cadet Maurice Khoury, one of the Interact Presidents, said “I like Interact because you get to help others. If you needed help one day you would want someone to help you, and when I help someone else it makes me feel good. It is like what Jesus did for me he died on the cross for me, he helped me.” The Club ends each Wednesday night meeting with a saying: “Is it the truth? Is it for all concerned? Will it build good will and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? And is it fun?” These are the principles that guide the club in helping others.

The Academy also hosts Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), who are also finding ways to give back. Last year FCA hosted a 5k run on campus to raise money to help provide scholarships to FCA summer camps. FCA also participated in The Field of Faith event, which was held in partnership with Fluvanna High School. This is a student led praise and worship service, and last year a former UVA Football player was the keynote speaker. This year they have already started work on Operation Christmas Child to help provide Christmas gifts to children less fortunate all over the world. The club also provides Gatorades to the Fork Union teams before games with inspirational bible verses to provide moral support. One of FCA’s most popular events each year is See You at the Pole, a nationwide day where students meet at the flag pole before the beginning of the class day to participate in prayer. Every year the cadets gather after Morning Colors for this special prayer service.

Christian faith into action.” He noted that it is rewarding to offer this hands-on experience to go along with the literature and sermons that are provided three times a week at Fork Union. His favorite part of teaching this class is “watching the students have fun, work together, and give of themselves.” During the term cadets visit a number of local organizations and volunteer their time. Last year cadets volunteered at White Bird Appaloosa Horse Rescue, the Fluvanna SPCA, Peaceful Passing’s, Ronald McDonald House, Eagle Eire retreat, Camp Crossroads, the National Kidney Foundation, and Central Elementary School in Fluvanna County. While

each of these organizations is different, they give cadets the chance to experience different volunteer opportunities. Brennon Garrison ’17, stated “I have grown in my faith and have gained knowledge throughout our readings and devotions. I have appreciated getting to do things for others, voluntarily, to help them out. Applying my Christianity has been a pleasure.” This class is unique at Fork Union, and something a public school could not offer. Instilling a desire to serve others is an important mission at Fork Union Military Academy, and these are just a few of the ways that Fork Union is reaching out into the community. As Fork Union continues to develop Christian leaders, an emphasis will continue to be placed on community service and the good we can all do for others.

Renovations on the Horizon

Fork Union takes pride in developing bright young men who can lead with character, and our first strategic goal is to integrate character and leadership development throughout the Academy. One way a school can demonstrate its priorities is to invest financial resources and build buildings. Thanks to a recent series of donations from a member of our Board of Trustees, we will soon be renovating the interior of Vaughn Hall, and converting the space into a Character and Leadership Development Center.

it useful for our faculty and Corps of Cadets. While the donor prefers to remain anonymous until all the funds are raised and the final bid has been accepted, the Academy very much appreciates this opportunity to create this leadership center on our main circle.

In 2014, the Academy renovated the adjacent old band hall (behind Vaughn Hall) into a Social Center, a place for cadets to gather, relax, and to have fun. However, the Commandant’s office in the front was never renovated after the staff moved to Jacobson Hall. The central location of Vaughn Hall and the space it offers is ideal for the new character and leadership center. This space will provide several classrooms, meeting areas, and offices to facilitate the classroom and experiential side of character and leadership growth.

As Fork Union Military Academy continues to raise funds for its ambitious and defining Called to Lead Campaign, we have already seen donors helping to fund endowed scholarships and athletic facility improvements, while plans for the pedestrian only campus and the new admission building are also in process.

ach year the senior class at Fork Union Military Academy achieves 100% college acceptance, and the diversity of the Corps is often reflected in these acceptances. Beginning with the Class of 2008, select members of each graduating class have been included on a poster called “A Few Good Men,” which highlights the diversity of acceptances our seniors receive. Nine editions of the Few Good Men poster now adorn the main lobby of Hatcher Hall, including the most recent one from the Class of 2017. These posters tell the success stories for each of the smiling boys selected for inclusion, and provide visitors with a glimpse of the array of admittances our seniors achieve each year. The most recent iteration includes cadets who were admitted to colleges from Florida to Washington, state schools and private colleges, service academies to technical schools. Behind each smiling face in the picture is a success story that we are always glad to tell.

Fork Union’s mission is to educate and develop young men to help them be successful in college and beyond. Below is a story of Zakee Heyward, a recent graduate who is achieving his goals, and looking toward the future. We asked him to share with us his stories, and we hope you enjoy reading about his Fork Union experience and how it helped drive him to success.

First I would like to say that I am honored to be writing this article. My name is Zakee Heyward, class of 2016 and I’m a sophomore at Virginia Tech. At Virginia Tech, I am a member of the Corps of Cadets and involved in Army ROTC, the Regimental Band (Highty-Tighties), the Regimental Jazz Band (Southern Colonels) , the Pep Band, Regimental Inspection Staff and Recruiting Staff. I am majoring in Criminology and plan on commissioning into the Army to become a Military Police Officer. After serving my years in the Army, I plan on joining the F.B.I. and becoming part of the S.W.A.T. Team. When you look back on your time at FUMA, what do you think about? When I look back, I think about the daily routine I went through. After track practice walking down to the football field, then going to dinner with my buddies and thinking there’s no place I’d rather be than here. What is your favorite memory from FUMA? My favorite memory of FUMA has to be parade season. The feeling of being able to dress up in my band dress uniform, grab the Drum Major mace or my snare drum and march across the field was the best feeling I ever had during my time at FUMA. Do you think FUMA helped prepare you for college? How? In many ways, FUMA gave me discipline not only in academics but also in the military aspect. I obtained study habits that I have carried on to my college studies. The four years of CQ taught me how to pace 8

myself in my studies and not overload myself with work. If at all, how did FUMA change you or develop you? FUMA matured me in ways a public school couldn’t. It gave me the opportunity to learn what my priorities are. Is your time at FUMA an experience you would credit your success to? There is no other way to put it. Fork Union gave me the key attributes I needed to be successful in everything I do. Not only because of the school structure but because of the faculty and staff that play the role of mentors in the cadets lives. They have the determination to mentor and guide the cadets to success. Did you create lasting friendships? I did more than create lasting friendships, I built a brotherhood with people that I will always be able to count on. There are people that I graduated with that I not only keep in touch with, but spend time with them in the summer. When my Uncle passed away, my Fork Union brothers supported me and helped me through the memorial service.

You only go through high school once. Take full advantage of the opportunities that are given to you at FUMA. Listen to the faculty at the school because a lot of them have been through what you are going through. They have the wisdom to guide you in the right direction towards success. Build the foundation of your leadership philosophy by putting yourself out there and trying new things. Testimony “Success stories begin here.” That was the first thing I heard about Fork Union Military Academy. I knew that I wanted to go to FUMA, but I did not know what I would be getting myself into nor the impact it would have on the rest of my life. Fork Union is an institution that provides the stepping stone for anything you plan on pursuing, whether it’s college, the workforce or the military. I am currently a sophomore at Virginia Tech and an Infantryman in the 29th Infantry Division for the Virginia Army National Guard. When it comes to academics, Fork Union gave me the fundamentals to be successful. When I was at Fork Union, I dreaded when CQ came around. I thought it was nothing but a waste of time. As we all know, I was wrong. Because of those four years of CQ, I am now able to sit down and complete my homework in one sitting. When it comes to the military, Fork Union gave me the discipline I needed to get through basic training. Waking up at the break of dawn, physical training, military etiquette and marching in a formation are things I learned from Fork Union. When I was at FUMA, there were times when I wanted to give up, but the community took me in and built me back up to be the man I am today. As an alumnus, I can honestly say there is nowhere else I would have rather spent my four years of high school. Fork Union not only gave me a high quality education, but it gave me a foundation of maturity and leadership, physical fitness, mentors, and brothers that I will have for a lifetime. If I had the choice, I would do it all over again.

What advice can you offer to current cadets to help them understand the importance of a good education, as well as how FUMA can benefit their future success? High school is a place of opportunity and development. 9

Not Up For Debate

FUMA’s Debate team proves itself to be a top competitor - looks forward to the upcoming season Written by CPT Mike Goad - Head Debate Coach To become a successful college student and a responsible citizen in a self-governing society, Fork Union cadets—and all high school students for that matter— must do three things: 1) stay up-to-date with current events and issues facing our nation, 2) formulate objective arguments that are not only fact based, but also supported by sound argumentation and rhetoric, and 3) be able to listen to and consider opposing viewpoints. The cadets who participate in Debate at Fork Union are exposed to each of these, thus better preparing them for higher education, while simultaneously training them to be responsible citizens in a representative democracy such as the one that governs our great nation. The three debate categories that Fork Union cadets participate in—Student Congress, Public Forum, and Lincoln Douglas—require cadets to think critically by forcing them to consider many different ways to solve some of society’s most pressing issues. In Public

Forum and Lincoln-Douglas, students are required to formulate arguments from both sides of a given topic. In these categories, only five minutes prior to each round of debate do students learn which side they will be arguing for. Forcing them to consider both sides of an argument requires them to think outside of the box—to consider the opinions of the other side, if you will. Weeks of research on opposing viewpoints and speech practice are required to be successful in these categories. In Student Congress, cadets present legislative bills on a list of five topics presented by the league, each of which relates to a current issue facing our nation’s lawmakers. In two sessions of Congress—a morning and afternoon session—cadets present three-minute speeches either in support of or against a respective piece of legislation. With only three minutes to present an argument, cadets must quickly learn to hone in on clear and concise rhetorical skills—something that

will go a long way in their pursuit of success in higher education. After their speeches, cadets are required to stand for a brief questioning period in which they are questioned by their fellow congressmen and women on their arguments. To successfully argue for or against a bill and stand for questioning, cadets must not only be cognizant of opposing arguments, but they must also be up-to-date on the most recent studies and events surrounding a particular topic in order to defend their arguments—again, something that will prove useful in higher education. Though this is certainly not a simple task, over the last few years, members of Fork Union’s Debate team, especially those competing in Student Congress, have been up to the task. Although Fork Union is not necessarily known for its success in debate, recent success in various debate categories has proven otherwise. During the 2016-2017 season, Fork Union qualified three cadets in Student Congress for the National Catholic Forensics League (NCFL) National Tournament. Cadets Michael Head (’17), William Pessaud (’18), and Joshua Henriques (’18) finished first, second, and third place respectively at the Virginia Catholic Forensics League (VCFL) State Tournament in March 2017, good enough to earn each cadet a trip to the aforementioned national tournament. Michael Head’s state championship was his second straight state championship in the category, and his third national qualification in four years. From a team perspective, these individual performances provided Fork Union with enough sweepstake points to

place first in the Student Congress category at the state tournament, good enough for third overall in debate. Aside from these national qualifiers, Fork Union Debate qualified five additional cadets at the state level in student congress and six in other debate categories during the 2016-2017 season, for a total of 14 cadets eligible to compete in the VCFL State Tournament. Though Fork Union loses Head—a two-time captain and perhaps the most decorated debater in the school’s 100-plus year history—the future looks bright for Fork Union Debate, as 8 of 14 state qualifiers from last year’s team return this season. Among the returning state qualifiers are 2017-2018’s co-captains Joshua Henriques (’18) and William Pessaud (’18), Kaleb Dressler (’18), Christian Sansovich (’19), Xavier White (’20), Nicholas DiGiulio (’20), and David Middleton (’18). In addition, several new faces have looked promising in the early weeks of practice for the upcoming season. Many of these new faces will attend the first meet simply to observe and learn the ins and outs of what it requires to be successful at a qualifying meet—often this provides them with the most productive “practice.” These new faces, in addition to the host of returning state qualifiers, should provide Fork Union with enough fire power to not only reclaim their state title in Student Congress, but also make a run at the overall state title in Debate.

Supporting Cadet Activities As great as FUMA’s debate success has been, the team has not been able to purse its full potential. Though the team’s success last year was tested and proven at the state level, the national qualifiers were not able to put their skills to the test at the national tournament due to a lack of funding. Though individual cadets have been sent to the national tournament in the past, FUMA has never faced the possibility of sending multiple cadets to the national tournament, which requires round-trip plane tickets and lodging for multiple nights. Having cadets represent Fork Union Military Academy at a national tournament would be an exciting opportunity not only for the cadets, but for the Academy as well. Giving to Fork Union and supporting cadet activities enables the Academy to promote activities like Debate, helping young men prepare themselves for college and beyond. education, this was a tough decision. As residents of Hanover County we had one of the finest public school systems in Virginia. Unfortunately, while the schools were excellent, they were not able to serve Tim’s needs. There was not enough structure in school, and for a young man living in two households it was easy to have some things slip through the cracks. The decision on Fork Union came after investigating several options for private education in the Richmond area. This included visiting several well-known and established schools with excellent reputations. None of these schools offered the structured approach found at FUMA, and they did not address the need to be in a focused environment away from the distractions found at home. Darla: When Tim left for Fork Union, I just knew that I would never need to make such a heart felt decision for my only child, my son, Harrison. The old message rings true for me, “never say never.”

An Interview with Darla Ludwig Bolton & Fred Bolton

Darla: Our family story began in June 2006 when mutual friends introduced me to Fred over dinner. From that day on we were in constant contact. We were married on January 1, 2009 in a beautiful ceremony on St. Thomas (USVI) with just the two of us and came back to a family celebration in Virginia. As a blended family with three boys; Christopher, a junior at Columbia University, Tim, a 2017 Fork Union graduate currently at Longwood University, and Harrison, attending FUMA as a sophomore for the 2017-18 school year, we’ve faced many challenges associated with merging households and managing

a complex calendar of activities, locations, and shared-custody. Our first few years of marriage were compounded by busy work schedules, Fred’s tour at the Pentagon, then in Afghanistan, and his return to civilian employment; and my return to a full-time job. Needless to say, it was difficult to establish a consistent pattern of family life. Why did you decide on Fork Union? Fred: The decision for Tim to attend Fork Union started with the decision to leave public school. For me, as a graduate and long-time supporter of public

Harrison thrived academically and socially in elementary school and enjoyed participating in many sports. Although he did well in middle school, it was sometimes a struggle as he got caught-up with the distractions of X-box and videogaming. Fast-forward to ninth grade and his study habits were nonexistent.

knew I needed to act. Having seen the change in Tim’s attitude, values, and behaviors while he was at FUMA, there was no doubt about where I would send Harrison. I was impressed with the opportunity that FUMA had provided Tim through academic, athletic, and spiritual activities. There was no question that Fork Union would be able to give Harrison the structure and discipline he needed to be successful. As we got to December of 2016, with just two quarters behind him in 9th grade, “Mama” was ready to take action. I drew-up a “contract” and had Harrison review it and ask questions before signing. The contract stated that if Harrison did not achieve all A’s and B’s for the last (2) 9-week periods of 9th grade, he would attend Fork Union Military Academy in the fall. I felt so blessed to have an obvious positive solution to our problem as FUMA complemented my parenting style by focusing on Body, Mind and Spirit. As Col Giszack stated on Orientation/ Check-in Day, August 21, 2017, “This is a Day of Destiny - we are all headed in a purpose driven direction.” I knew when I heard those words that God had once again steered me in the right direction with the decision that Fork Union is where Harrison would earn his high school diploma.

As FUMA graduates, they will be men who will make a difference in the world.

We have instilled in our boys that school and getting good grades is their “job.” While Harrison is an extremely well-mannered young man, there were the occasional screaming matches between Harrison and myself because of sub-par grades. Harrison reiterated many times that he would start studying more, but behaviors did not change. Because I didn’t go to college until later in life, I saw the importance of having a college education early on. I also knew that if Harrison wanted to even be considered for acceptance to UVA, his only college of choice right now, he needed to get on track in high school. Harrison needed structure and he was not getting that in our home environment. He also lacked drive, and by the beginning of his freshman year I

What impact has the choice had on your family?

Fred: Tim’s experience at FUMA was not without challenges but he was able to adapt to the requirements of the school and thrive. Not only did Tim receive an excellent education but he learned important lessons about life and the things that are valuable. He went from a boy headed on a downward trajectory to a young man with unlimited potential. Tim’s transformation was astounding. Physically, Tim has become an incredibly fit young man. Tim is dedicated not only to spending time in the gym but to also considering what he puts in his body. Tim now regularly attempts to achieve “personal best” lifts and also wants to participate in weight lifting competitions. Academically, Tim developed study habits and discipline that resulted in his acceptance in the

Nursing program at Longwood University. His goal is to become a nurse and continue on to a Nurse Practitioner or other medical professional. Achieving this goal would not be possible without the experience he gained at FUMA. Emotionally and spiritually, Tim has grown tremendously. Perhaps one of the greatest changes gained from Fork Union is the maturity that results from the disciplined environment. Compared to young men of his age, Tim is much more capable of handling adverse situations and is able to exert strong personal leadership. Tim’s experience at FUMA has resulted in lifetime friends formed from shared experience under what most teenage boys would consider “adverse” conditions. It is hard to fully express the impact that Fork Union has had on our family. Perhaps the greatest impact is in the appreciation we now have for the opportunity that FUMA provides. The caring nature of the staff and faculty cannot be under-stated. While instilling a disciplined approach to education, the school is focused on the full development of the mind, body, and spirit of young men. Darla: The impact that FUMA has made on our family thus far has been incredible and there’s more to come! Harrison is thriving after just a few months as a sophomore at FUMA. He is in a junior leadership position and is working to achieve higher rank. He is also excited about the opportunities to play sports

and be active in school. Most important, Harrison is earning good grades and developing the study skills he so desperately needs. What would you say to a parent considering Fork Union? Fred: Deciding to send a child to Fork Union is a tough choice. There are many unknowns for both the parent and the young man to face. It is a scary time filled with uncertainty and often a good bit of tension and some sadness. For most, the idea of private education, yet alone a military-style boarding school, is difficult to comprehend. That said, I have found the experience as a FUMA parent amazing. The care and concern of faculty and staff is readily apparent. The learning environment, facilities, and opportunities are awesome and unmatched in almost all public schools. While the transition to Fork Union for young men may be difficult, they will always be proud to say that the went to FUMA. I am proud that both Tim and Harrison ended up at FUMA. As FUMA graduates, they will be men who will make a difference in the world. There are few things that will bring a tear to my eye, but ask me what FUMA has meant to me and my family and you’ll see my eyes start to water-up.

TrusteeChallenge

In 2012, the Board of Trustees at Fork Union Military Academy decided to create a special scholarship to encourage the best and brightest to attend Fork Union. The Trustee Scholarship is awarded to a new 8th, 9th, or 10th grader, and covers all tuition costs until they graduate. This scholarship has now helped five young men attend Fork Union, two of which recently graduated and are now attending two of our nation’s service academies. The Trustee Scholarship was important to the Board as they wanted the best young men to attend Fork Union regardless of their ability to pay.

It’s obvious the Board of Trustees members all have a deep love and passion for Fork Union, as attending long meetings and making important decisions is challenging work that no one does just for fun. They also have a deep love for the young men who attend, and they know how important a Fork Union education can be in helping to develop respectful, honest, faithful, moral, disciplined young men. Many of the Board members support other types of scholarships as well, which are an important part of helping Fork Union educate young men. Ms. Marion Moon, a Trustee for years, has been particularly passionate about scholarship support and donates specifically to access scholarships to enroll students who might otherwise not be able to afford Fork Union

Military Academy. During the 2017 May Board meeting, Ms. Moon challenged each of her fellow Trustees to help support these critical types of scholarships by announcing that if the Board could raise $50,000, she would match it and the Trustees would be providing $100,000 in Scholarship support for the 2017-2018 Academic year. Inspired by Ms. Moon’s passion and determination to help as many young men as possible, Trustee Emeriti Dr. Emerson Farley declared that he would raise the stakes and challenge the Board to an additional $50,000, which he would match. If completed, this Trustee Challenge would raise a much needed $200,000 in access scholarships. After nearly six months of promoting the challenge and recording donations, the Trustees have succeeded in equaling both Ms. Moon’s and Dr. Farley’s challenge, helping over 25 young men attend Fork Union Military Academy for this academic year. The Academy thanks the Trustees not only for their service to helping make Fork Union strong, but for also looking to strengthen young men who might not have otherwise had the opportunity to attend Fork Union.

Planned Giving Planned gifts are one of the most meaningful and special ways to contribute to Fork Union Military Academy. More than just a donation, these unique gifts make a significant impact in developing young men.

Last year the Academy highlighted Mr. Dick Wall who established a life insurance policy to support a scholarship in memory of his wife, Carol Wall. Now their son, Phil Wall ’05, is following in his father’s footsteps and has taken out a life insurance policy to support the scholarship in memory of his mother. The Academy is thankful to the Wall family and for those listed below who recognize the importance of planned gifts to helping Fork Union educate develop and inspire young men. Gifts in Honor or Memory The Academy is blessed to have supporters who not only advance our mission but also honor others though honor or memory gifts. Below is a listing of those who were honored in this way during the 2016-2017 Fiscal year.

The Academy was saddened this year by the passing of longtime Trustee George C. Currin. Mr. Currin graduated from FUMA in 1954, and was one of several classmates who helped found the Class of 1954 Scholarship, which provides scholarships to cadet leaders each year. Mr. Currin was always a generous supporter of Fork Union, and served as the committee chairman for the Jacobson Hall fundraising campaign. He was awarded the R. L. Pulliam Award in 2012 for his service to the school. After his passing, many friends of the Academy contributed to the Currin Scholarship in his memory. This scholarship, named after his wife Leeda and himself, will undoubtedly benefit countless cadets in the years that come. We are grateful for all those who gave in memory of Mr. George Currin, and all the others listed below.

MR. EDSEL “JACK” LESTER SCHOLARSHIP Founded in honor of Mr. Lester ‘51 to provide scholarships to cadets who have a financial need.

RETON EDGERTON SCHOLARSHIP Created in honor of the Academy’s first music director, this scholarship is awarded to a band or choir member each year.

GUS LACY TRACK SCHOLARSHIP Named in honor of Fork Union’s longtime track coach Gus Lacy and supports scholarships for track athletes each year. JOHN L. “BUCK” FRALEY SCHOLARSHIP For academically qualified students who have a desire to attend Fork Union Military Academy and demonstrate a financial need. T. FIELDS MONTGOMERY SCHOLARSHIP Donated by Mr. and Mrs. George Turner, in memory of Mrs. Turner’s father who was a dedicated supporter of education. This scholarship provides support for a cadet to attend through his senior year.

ANTHONY LAZIZZA SCHOLARSHIP Named in memory of long-time music director Anthony Lazizza, this scholarship supports a band or choir member each year. GUS LACY ALUMNI AWARD Created in honor of Gus Lacy for his service to the Academy’s Development Department, this scholarship is awarded each year by the Alumni Board to a rising junior. ROSIE THOMAS SCHOLARSHIP Named for famed Athletic Director Rosie Thomas, this scholarships supports athletes at Fork Union Military Academy. GREENBRIER SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship was formed by the Greenbrier Alumni Association to ensure that Greenbrier’s spirit lived on after the schools closing. Each year a rising junior is selected to receive this scholarship.

MICHAEL SCOTT HAMBY SCHOLARSHIP Founded by Mr. Hamby’s parents in 1998, this scholarship is given to the cadet who has exhibited the greatest improvement in attitude and/or self-esteem since arriving at Fork Union. COACH BILL BLAIR POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship, named in honor of Coach Blair, supports Postgraduate football players who seek to attend Fork Union.

JAMAL THOMAS SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship was founded by Justice Clarence Thomas, and named in honor of his son. This scholarship is awarded to a cadet who has a real financial need.

CLASS OF 1955 SCHOLARSHIP Founded by the class of 1955, this class scholarship honors their legacy as alumni while helping a new generation of young men attend Fork Union.

PAUL FREDERICK COBB SCHOLARSHIP Founded by Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Cobb and named in memory of his brother who was killed in action during Vietnam, this scholarship is awarded to a young man who demonstrates leadership and integrity.

EDWARD A. PAYNE SCHOLARSHIP Named in honor of Mr. Payne, a former mathematics teacher at Fork Union, this scholarship is awarded to a cadet who shows integrity, character, leadership, humility and patriotism.

WHITMAN B. WIATT SCHOLARSHIP Founded by Susan Wiatt and John Wiatt in memory of Whitman Wiatt, and is awarded to a cadet who demonstrates integrity, character, leadership, and kindness. JACK HARING SCHOLARSHIP Mr. Haring graduated FUMA in 1952. His wife founded this scholarship in his memory. CHARLES ROGERS SCHOLARSHIP Founded in memory of TAC Officer Charles Rogers, who graduated as a postgraduate from Fork Union, this scholarship is awarded to a postgraduate basketball player.

LIN BATES SCHOLARSHIP Founded by Mrs. Nancy B. Bates and named in memory of her husband who graduated FUMA in 1948, this scholarship supports an outstanding returning cadet.

CLASS OF 1954 SCHOLARSHIP To honor their 50th reunion, the Class of 1954 established this scholarship to help young men who demonstrate leadership at Fork Union Military Academy.

GEORGE & LEEDA CURRIN SCHOLARSHIP Established by Mr. & Mrs. Currin ‘54, this scholarship supports young men who have a financial need and wish to attend Fork Union.

VERNON THOMAS MORGAN SCHOLARSHIP Endowed by Ms. Margaret Harmon, this scholarship supports an outstanding athlete.

GUY E. BEATTY SCHOLARSHIP Founded by one of the schools strongest and most generous supporters, this scholarship provides funds for young men who need it most.

FRED HOFFMAN SCHOLARSHIP Awarded to the quartermaster assistant each year, this scholarship is named in memory of longtime quartermaster Fred Hoffman.

JOEL T. BROYHILL SCHOLARSHIP Mr. Broyhill graduated Fork Union in 1939, and served in congress for 11 terms. This scholarship supports young men who need assistance attending Fork Union Military Academy.

PERCY FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP Donated by Stewart Percy ’59 and Chad Percy ’83 to honor their grandson and son Spencer Percy ’06, this scholarship supports postgraduate football players GREG LACOUR SCHOLARSHIP Founded to provide a scholarship to a deserving upper school cadet who exhibits the highest cadet standards and who demonstrates the greatest promise to be a future leader in the Corps of Cadets. CURTIS POWELL SCHOLARSHIP Named in memory of Mr. Powell ’05, who led Fork Union’s football team as captain. This scholarship supports a prep football player who demonstrates excellence on and off the field. MAJOR CRAIG MOON ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP Founded by his mother, Mrs. Marion Moon, this scholarship is awarded to cadets who show integrity, character, leadership, and humility. LT. GENERAL JOHN E. JACKSON, JR. LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP Founded in honor of Lt. Gen. Jackson and his wife Barbara by Mr. & Dr. Callaway, this scholarship is given to a young man who demonstrates extraordinary leadership qualities and character. FLETCHER ARRITT SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship was founded by friends of Coach Arritt ‘60 who wanted to honor his retirement. This scholarship supports Postgraduate Basketball players.

JUSTIN STUART EDELL SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship, founded by Dr. & Mrs. Dean Edell in honor of their son, provides a merit scholarship to a cadet who has attended since his sophomore year and has the highest grade in mathematics. JON RICHARDSON ACCESS SCHOLARSHIP Founded by his estate and supported by his wife and father, this scholarship provides much needed scholarship support to young men who wish to attend the Academy and who demonstrate a financial need. DWYER FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP Founded by Mr. & Mrs. Paul Dwyer ’76, this scholarship will help a young man who will benefit from attending Fork Union Military Academy, and exhibits character and academic excellence. CLASS OF 1952 SCHOLARSHIP Founded by the estate of a 1952 graduate, this scholarship supports young men who demonstrate need. WILLIAM F. ROWE III SCHOLARSHIP This scholarship is awarded to a rising senior at the Academy who demonstrates financial need, and who adheres to and embodies the Academy’s principles and motto of Body, Mind Spirit. COL R. L. & MRS. PATSY PULLIAM SCHOLARSHIP Founded by alumni and friends who wanted to honor COL & Mrs. Pulliam’s long-time dedication to Fork Union Military Academy, this scholarship is awarded to a young man who demonstrates friendliness, thoughtfulness, high moral values and good sportsmanship. The Academy would also like to recognize all the classes who, during the 20162017 Fiscal Year, contributed to founding an endowed scholarship to help future generations of young men attend Fork Union Military Academy: Classes of 1946, 1966, 1967,1973, 1975, and 1979
