IN THE NEWS Washington DNR to Lock Up 10,000 Acres of Timberland

The Washington Department of Natural Resources will put 10,000 acres of timberland in Western Washington off limits to logging and work with a company owned by oil giant BP to sell carbon credits.

The trees will be preserved, left uncut to offset emissions by businesses that buy the credits. The program will “repurpose public lands for climate solutions,” said Public Lands Commissioner Hilary Franz.

The timber industry and some counties and legislators oppose the plan. They contend it will hurt rural economies, schools and public services, and it won’t cut carbon emissions as companies buy credits to keep emitting greenhouse gasses.

State Rep. Ed Orcutt, a forester by trade, said harvested wood products hold carbon and that growing trees sucks up more carbon from the air than mature trees. “It sounds good to lock up timber and say we’re benefitting the climate,” said Orcott, a Southwest Washington Republican. “It feels good. It’s actually bad.”

In a letter to the Department of Natural Resources, the Lewis County commissioners claim Franz violated the State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA).

DNR has picked 2,500 acres to set aside in Grays Harbor, King, Thurston and Whatcom counties. The department was seeking public comment on where to conserve the other 7,500 acres.

As timberland, the 10,000 acres would yield 400 million board feet of lumber products, according to the American Forest Resource Council. Timber sales support rural schools, counties, fire districts and other services.

DNR does not know how much selling carbon credits will raise for public services compared to selling timber.

The council, drawing on numbers from a DNR report, estimates that carbon credits will generate about 10 percent of the revenue that could be raised by cutting the trees. The loss to rural schools and public services will total about $150 million, while loggers, truckers and mills will lose about $500 million in economic activity, the council projects.

“We don’t see how carbon offsets can come close” to timber revenue, council spokesman Nick Smith said. “We’re extremely concerned about the consequences of carbon offsets, on public lands in particular.”

Franz announced the partnership with Finite Carbon earlier this year. BP Launchpad, the venture capital arm of BP, formerly British Petroleum, acquired a majority stake in Finite Carbon in 2020.

DNR officials have cleared the project of further environmental review and plan to start leasing land for carbon credits next year.

The Board of Natural Resources, a policy setting panel for DNR, was not involved in planning the project. The vice chairman, Clallam County Commissioner Bill Peach, said no leases should be signed until DNR understands the financial impact to rural services and economies. “It should be discussed at the board level. That conversation has not occurred,” he said.

A company buys credits to reduce its carbon footprint. Walt Disney Co. reports conserving 1 million acres of forests to offset its carbon emissions, including from its five cruise ships.

DNR calculated that leaving the 10,000 acres of timber standing will be like subtracting the greenhouse gasses from gas-powered cars driving 2 billion miles.

sawmills in Western Washington rely on DNR timber sales. The jobs lost will be real, said Cooper, questioning whether the same can be said for the purported carbon reductions. “Those cars are still on the road,” he said.

California Forests Weakened

By Drought Succumb to Beetles

In forests throughout California, trees are turning a dark shade of rust, succumbing to the impacts of drought.

The problem first peaked in 2016 when the U.S. Forest Service released images from a statewide aerial survey, estimating 62 million trees died that year. Forests benefitted from heavy rain and snowfall in 2017.

However, the Forest Service estimates that 9.5 million trees died last year, mostly fir and pine. Scientists are concerned one more year of drought could lead to another mass die-off.

“It’s on a trajectory to be even worse than when the last one peaked in 2016,” said Curtis Ewing, an entomologist and a senior environmental scientist with CAL FIRE. Beetles are attacking the weakest trees, he added.

A healthy tree produces sap or pitch that helps keep insects out. Trees weakened by years of drought are left defenseless against invasive beetles.

“They have a very low water pressure inside them,” said Ewing. “Their roots are compromised. Everything is compromised.

So they just cannot fight them off.”

Asked what could be done, Ewing said, “You need to thin the trees.”

The federal and state governments are promising to fund more forest-thinning projects. Rule changes Will Impact 10 Million Acres in Oregon

Judge Rules That Oregon Timber Sale Violated ESA

The Oregon Board of Forestry approved more than 100 changes to the Forest Practices Act. The changes will impact timber harvest activities on more than 10 million acres of private and non-federal forests.

The rule changes are a result of the mediated and groundbreaking Private Forest Accord (PFA) that brought together representatives from conservation groups and the timber industry.

“The rules we adopted are just one of a great many changes coming from the Private Forest Accord that will advance how Oregon protects its natural resources and responds to the climate change crisis, while also providing some stability for the communities and economies that rely on the forest products industry,” said board chair Jim Kelly. “This agreement captures the spirit of cooperation and negotiation we have in this state, where we move past our differences to find solutions.”

The goal of the PFA and the Forest Practices Act rule changes is to provide long-term certainty to industry while providing enhanced protection to critical aquatic species.

“The timber industry is vital to many rural Oregon communities,” said Kelly. “This agreement balances these critical social and economic components with the need to better protect critical forest habitat, which is also incredibly beneficial for Oregonians.”

The state Department of Forestry worked closely with the PFA authors to write the new rules that cover several key areas including: • New and wider stream buffers to protect stream habitat that supports salmon, steelhead, bull trout, and amphibians.

• New design standards and requirements to inventory, maintain and manage forest roads, with an emphasis on replacing culverts on fish-bearing streams.

• Steep slopes will have more trees retained to improve slope stability and reduce sediment that can impact fish habitat.

• Enhanced monitoring to better evaluate rule compliance.

• A new adaptive management program to advise the Board of Forestry on future rule adjustments.

In addition to rule changes, recent legislation also funded the creation of a small forest landowner assistance office, establishment of tax credits to small landowners, started the development of a habitat conservation plan for aquatic species and made investments in training and outreach.

An Oregon District Court judge ruled that approved timber sales totaling nearly 18,000 acres housing old growth timber violated the federal Endangered Species Act as harvesting timber on those sales would impact habitat for the northern spotted owl.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service claimed the timber harvests would not harm the endangered owl species.

In her ruling, District Court Justice Ann Aiken said the Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service failed to properly investigate the effects of the East Evans Creek and Milepost 97 fires on the proposed timber sales and the impact of those fires on northern spotted owl habitat.

Judge Aiken faulted the agencies for failing to analyze the effect of habitat loss resulting from the logging projects on the competitive

interactions between the northern spotted owl as well as the barred owl.

Nick Cady, a spokesperson for Cascadia Wildlands, which opposed the logging plans, said in a news release that the Milepost 97 Fire alone burned more than 4,700 acres of northern spotted owl habitat and “reduced canopy closure below 40 percent in a narrow but vitally important east-west habitat bridge.”

“This constant prohibition of managing timber through the courts is a mistake,” said Douglas County Commissioner Tim Freeman, president of the Association of O&C Counties. “We should let land managers and foresters manage the forest and not let the courts and environmental groups dictate best forest practices.” (continued on page 8)

im Cox, a veteran journalist with experience covering the forest products industry, has been appointed Editor of TimberWest magazine.

He began his new duties Nov. 1.

“Tim comes to TimberWest Magazine with a breadth of knowledge matched by few where the forest industry is concerned,” said Anthony Robinson, Publisher of TimberWest. “We are excited to have Tim on board and look forward to introducing him to many customers and industry connections at the Oregon Logging Conference in February.”

Cox has worked for Industrial Reporting, publishers of Pallet Enterprise and TimberLine magazines, serving

as the editor of both magazines for 12 years. Pallet Enterprise is a monthly trade journal for the pallet manufacturing and recycling industry; TimberLine covers logging, sawmills, and lumber remanufacturing. Cox has continued to contribute to both publications. He also has written for Southern Logging Times, and he did a stint providing marketing communications for Caterpillar’s logging equipment division.

In addition to his experience with trade media covering the forest products industry, Cox has worked as a reporter and editor for weekly and daily newspapers in three states. He also was employed as a newsman for United Press International, during which time his by-line appeared in The Washington Post and other newspapers.

“I’m delighted to have the opportunity to help produce TimberWest and deliver news and information to our readers and increase exposure for our advertisers,” said Cox. CAL FIRE OKs Logging Project

CAL FIRE has approved plans for selective logging of redwood and Douglas fir trees on 224 acres above the lower Russian River between Guerneville and Monte Rio. Its approval raises the prospect of legal action by opponents who hope they still might prevent the Silver Estates harvest from going forward.

The state agency granted approval after months of public scrutiny, plan revisions and delays that critics say reflect the proposal’s fundamentally flawed nature.

Eric Huff, staff chief of Cal Fire’s Forest Practice Program, said the final version conforms with state Forest Practice Rules. The decision authorizes landowner Roger Burch and his family to carry out its provisions any time over the next five years.

What happens next appears to depend in large part on whether Burch and his representatives decide to begin operations this winter, within the restrictions permitted for the traditional wet weather season.

An attorney for the grassroots Guerneville Forest Coalition and its nonprofit sponsor, Forest Unlimited, is trying to determine when the operational start might be before deciding whether to seek a temporary restraining order.

Critics argue the plan to cut timber on Neeley Hill and areas around it threatens several endangered and threatened species and risks undermining steep, unstable hillsides, which could trigger landslides, damage roads and compromise water quality, among other problems.

Alaska Native Groups Sue Over Carbon Credits Revenue

A lawsuit by Alaska Native corporations threatens to upend a landmark revenue sharing pact that’s guided the distribution of

more than $2 billion among them for more than four decades.

The litigation stems from a 1982 settlement agreement that has long defused financial disputes between the 12 regional Native corporations. It outlined how the companies should share income from exploiting resources like forests, but the agreement did not specify what should happen with money earned by preserving them.

The lawsuit centers on a major new revenue stream that has generated more than $100 million for three of the regional corporations since 2016. Juneau-based Sealaska Corp., Copper River Valley-based Ahtna Inc. and Gulf of Alaska-area Chugach Alaska Corp. have all put tracts of timber holdings into California’s carbon credits markets, which allow forest owners to get paid for keeping lands unharvested for 100 years.

The plaintiffs argue that the 1982 agreement and a 1971 federal law – the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) – that underpins it require 70 percent of those carbon credit revenues to be shared among the rest of the regional corporations.

The 1982 agreement calls for revenue sharing disputes to be handled by a private, three-member arbitration panel. However, after a unanimous panel decision in July that found the carbon credit revenues not subject to sharing, the three plaintiffs – Nome-based Bering Straits Native Corp., Kotzebuebased NANA Regional Corp. and Bethelbased Calista Corp. – appealed their case to the state court system.

They’re asking Anchorage Superior Court Judge Jack McKenna to either award them a portion of the carbon credits money under the 1982 agreement or – if he rules that the pact doesn’t apply – to invalidate it altogether.

“ANCSA is clear regarding the requirements for revenue sharing,” said Matt

Findley, an attorney representing Calista.

“Seventy percent of all revenues received by each ANCSA regional corporation from their timber resources and mineral resources are subject to revenue sharing.” Calista and the two other plaintiffs, he added, “are pursuing this action to ensure the text and intent of ANCSA are honored.”

The lawsuit could invalidate the 1982 agreement and launch a new era of disputes and litigation.

California Senators, Reps Urge Forest Service Action

U.S. Senators Dianne Feinstein and Alex Padilla (both D-Calif.) joined Representatives Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) and Doug LaMalfa (R-Calif.) in a bipartisan letter to the U.S. Forest Service about the lack of forest management and fire preparedness efforts made in Grizzly Flats, the California town that was destroyed by the Caldor Fire in 2021.

Their letter urges the Forest Service to reevaluate its fire prevention strategies and improve its community protection efforts to prevent further destruction caused by future wildfires.

As revealed in a recent investigation by CapRadio, the Forest Service failed to take the necessary steps to protect Grizzly Flats from a wildfire the size of the Caldor Fire despite models showing its imminence and pleas from the community to do so.

According to the investigation, the failure to fully implement the Trestle Forest Health Project in a timely manner ultimately led to the town’s destruction as a result of the fastmoving fire, which followed a path predicted by models.

“It is unacceptable that the town’s proactive efforts and calls for aggressive fire mitigation assistance were met with inaction and delays from the Forest Service,” the lawmakers wrote.

UBERRY, CALIFORNIA – As Ryan Day, owner of Lite on the Land, surveyed a logging site in the Sierra National Forest, he reflected on how far his company has come. His father, Steve, got into forestry while working with CAL FIRE, the California Department of Forestry & Fire Protection responsible for protecting the people, property, and resources of the Golden State.

There wasn’t much opportunity for logging near their hometown of Auberry in Central California until 2006. “Then brush mastication to eliminate fuel and create fire breaks became a big thing,” said Ryan. “My father said, ‘Let’s give it a go.’ ” His father wanted to disturb the landscape as little as possible, so Lite on the Land was born. The two started out with a skid steer with multiple attachments, doing

fire-clearance and hazard-reduction projects for private landowners. Initially they had to take other jobs to stay busy.

Lite on the Land began to grow into a fully mechanized logging business around 2012. Southern California Edison (SCE) approached the company to help it deal with what California loggers dub “the mortality” – the bark beetle infestation that decimated much of the ponderosa pine and sugar pine

Today Lite on the Land employs 30 people and operates three crews. “I never thought we’d get this big back in 2006,” said Ryan. “We were in the right place at the right time and worked hard. I don’t think we ever had a Saturday off, and we worked a few Sundays, too. It’s been an incredible journey.”

His mother had other ideas. “She told me, ‘I don’t care what you do, just don’t be a logger,’ Her father moved a lot, and she went to 15 or 20 high schools in four years. But when your mother tells you not to do something, it kind of makes you want to do it even more,” he added, laughing.

The woods ultimately drew him to logging. Lite on the Land often logs around

Shaver Lake, a picturesque and popular vacation destination near Fresno. “I’m very lucky I get to come out here in the mountains in this beautiful forest,” said Ryan. “I love watching the big equipment and the big trees hitting the ground.”

His mother was right about the travel, though. After Ryan graduated from high school, he went to work in logging in (continued on page 12)

I started at the bottom, taking all the jobs nobody wanted to do, and worked my way up. I’m glad I did that because now when I ask someone to do something, I’ve done it.

I can tell them, ‘I know it’s not easy, and I know it’s hot out here.’ ”

Good Steward

Much of Lite on the Land’s work now is on the approximately 20,000 acres owned by SCE surrounding Shaver Lake. “SCE does a great job managing the forest,” said Ryan.

“If I call the head forester with an issue, he’ll come out that afternoon or the next

morning.” Over the years Lite on the Land has logged some areas three times. “The forest is healthier from us being there,” said Ryan. “We didn’t overcut. We made room for new trees to grow.”

Ryan champions good forest management and stewardship. “Many forests around here just have too many trees per acre,” he noted. “Then you get bug infestations, and the trees can’t fight off the bugs. If that doesn’t get cleaned up, the forest is ripe for wildfire.”

The area around Shaver Lake was ravaged by the Creek Fire, the largest fire in California history, in December 2020. The fire consumed almost 380,000 acres. “Fueled by 40-mile-an-hour winds, the fires raced up

the valley,” recalled Ryan. “It just blew up. I knew it was going to be bad.”

Ryan helped residents clean up their properties after the fire. “You’d see your neighbor’s house burnt down, and that’s when it really hit home how awful it was.”

Lite on the Land worked for the state for three weeks building fire lines. Then the company went to work for SCE, clearing roads so it was safe for crews to go in and rebuild infrastructure. “We worked 12hour days for 72 days straight,” said Ryan.

“Everybody was pretty taxed after that. It was tiring.”

After the Creek Fire, most of Lite on the Land’s work has been cleaning up burned trees for SCE. “When we started, bunches

Within a year, the dead timber won’t be merchantable, but Ryan remains optimistic.

“There will be other opportunities because the timber industry solves a lot of problems.

But as a society overall, we need to stand up and say, ‘We need to manage our forests.’ ” Major challenges in California, Ryan pointed out, are insufficient funding to clean up public forestlands and opposition groups that stifle logging initiatives.

Deere Fleet

Lite on the Land also runs a crew to do utility work for Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E), which helps the company stay busy during slower winter months. A third hand-felling crew handles big wood with the help of a John Deere utility wheel loader and John Deere 848L Skidder.

“There’s not a lot of logging in central California,” observed Ryan. “One of the nice things about Papé is that even though we are not in Oregon or Washington, we can call a branch in Eugene or Kelso and talk with an expert in a region where there are maybe 15 or 20 processors working. Down here there are only two that I know of. And they don’t mind. They are just a wealth of information.”

Ryan also appreciates the support John Deere gives to the logging industry. “Some manufacturers are trying to get out of the industry, and Deere is doubling down. They are investing big time and continue to deliver great products and technology.”

Strong Support from Supplier Is Key, Says Oregon Logger

OSEBURG, OREGON – If you mention a passion for logging, big equipment, or bass fishing in Roseburg, Oregon, it’s likely Chris Martin’s name will pop up.

Born and raised in this self-acclaimed Timber Capital of the World, Chris started doing cut-to-length (CTL) in his dad’s logging operation when he was a high school sophomore. When his father retired, Chris started his own company and kept on going. Today, like everyone else in the business, the owner-operator of Martin Timber Harvesting is just trying to stay up with an ever-changing industry.

“Today, I mainly only work for Weyerhaeuser, and as rewarding as that is, I do mourn the lessening demand for short logs over long logs,” said Chris. “I do have a 16

It gives less soil disturbance by pulling them through the stand on the slash. I mean, half my jobs have been tree length jobs, skidding them with a clam bunk, and processing them roadside just like you would in a normal operation, but I’ve been cutting to length for 22 years, and it’s still my favorite.”

Heat and Smoke Rules

Chris supports the new Oregon OSHA permanent rules that were created in July to protect industry workers from wildfire heat and smoke.

“I’m not the guy who likes to go chase fires, and I had hoped we could have escaped them this season,” said Chris. “However, between the heat and smoke rules, I think the

heat rules will affect us the most. We don’t really have smoke issues unless we have fires or there are fires around us blowing smoke into us. So, the biggest thing that is going to affect us is going to be the rules about heat.

It’s just another thing, not a bad thing, but we have had instances of guys having problems with the heat, so we need to help them prepare for it. It does put a little bit more burden on us, but as employers, we need and want to take care of our guys.”

“Working for Weyerhaeuser, we already follow very strict safety rules,” added Chris, “so it isn’t that big a deal to add the new ones.

Weyerhaeuser requires a lot of the same stuff that’s already required by OSHA, but they ramp it up a little and heavily enforce it. Personal protection equipment is a huge thing for them. When you’re driving, headlights, seatbelts, all that stuff that is normal everyday stuff like high visibility clothing,

Weyerhaeuser wants to know a company’s safety plan, said Chris. “And they work with us on things they think maybe we could improve. They do safety reviews and audits with us and have what’s called paired leadership visits, where our foresters and upper management for our company go out and go over things, talk about stuff, and tell us how we’ve been doing.”

Weyerhaeuser sent out information about the heat and smoke rules earlier this year. “Just reminding us of what’s required,” said Chris, “making sure everybody’s on the up, knowing what’s going on, and what’s required of them.”

Mixed Fleet of Equipment

Chris was running his father’s CTL operations with a Timberjack 1270B harvester, a John Deere 1410E forwarder, and a Valmet 941 harvester. He enjoyed operating and taking care of the equipment, and he’s continued taking care of his own. When his father retired in 2017, rather than take over the family business, Chris started his own company from scratch.

“I guess I felt like I just wanted to see if I could do it starting from basically nothing,” Chris said. “I didn’t have a vehicle or pickup or anything, and I got my own financing so I could pay Dad good money for a 2014 Ponsse Ergo with a H7 harvester head and a 2016 Ponsse Buffalo forwarder and started my one-man business. I would cut first and then stack with the forwarder. As business grew, I added employees. Now, five years later, as short logs are encroaching on the

In praise of modern equipment and good sales reps, Chris had lots to say about the importance of good machinery, maintenance, and service.

“I am not only passionate about owning good equipment, but I think daily maintenance is critical,” said Chris. “I sincerely believe 90 percent of your success with equipment is going to be the relationship you have with your service rep.”

He recently invested in a new Komatsu D61EX bulldozer to replace a 22-year-old model.

“I grease every day, fuel the truck each night, and keep the equipment clean,” said Chris. “Besides the fact that well-maintained equipment operates better, it fetches a better trade-in value than a busted-up hunk of iron.”

Chris emphasized the importance of solid relationships with dealer and manufacturer reps in order to keep running. “One of the things I’ve learned is, even though a specific company may have something out there that’s a little better than their competitor, everybody builds good stuff. However, no matter which brand you buy, what color it is, or whose name is on it, we all know something is going to break. Because nothing ever breaks at the right time or when you are ready for it to break, that’s when you need a good relationship with your rep, the dealer and-or the manufacturer. I’ve been at dinner with Ed James, my rep at Modern Machinery in Medford, and have seen him answer calls from customers at eight and nine at night. That’s the kind of support you need from your supplier.”

Ed, who has been with Komatsu since 1996, has worked with Chris since he came to Modern Machinery in 2017. “At the end of the day, all equipment must move dirt, but Chris’ motto is to see how much production he can get out of it, see how nice you can keep it, and see how much you can sell it for in the end,” said Ed. “Time is money, whether it’s my time, their time, or my vendor’s time. Everything just starts to add up.”

Ed commented on what Chris aims for with his equipment purchases. “I think Chris

ContractorProfile looks for fit, finish, comfort, and product. I think he went with the TimberPro because of the open line of communication to the factory. He ran it provisionally, and he felt there were some changes that could be made.

The factory engaged with him and valued his opinion and made him feel like one of the family. My job is to try to do it as efficiently as possible, give the best deal at the best price, with the best delivery schedule.”

The Lure of the Big Bass

The last-but-not-least of Chris’ passions, and the one that is the hardest to make time for, is competitive largemouth bass fishing.

Though trout is the most popular game fish in the state, Chris has his own reasons for preferring to fish for bass.

“It’s a challenge, and I really enjoy a challenge,” said Chris. “Just trying to figure it out, even as frustrating as it can be – and we’ve had some stints where it’s been very frustrating. I fish tournaments when I can, and we’ll have a day that we don’t do so great, but four or five other teams did really good.”

The fish can be caught on any given day, but “you just have to figure them out.”

Bass fishing is not as mainstream in Oregon as it is in the Eastern states, but it’s a lot bigger than you might think, said Chris. “The spring is my favorite time to fish

because that’s when they start spawning, and they get a little bit more aggressive. The fish are as big as they’re going to be all year.

That’s when your time to catch the fish is a lot more productive, so I try and fish more then. Actually, I try to fish anytime I can on the weekends.”

The Future

When asked if he still enjoys being a logger as much as he did when he started, Chris said, “Of course, of course.”

The industry has advanced by leaps and

bounds for a long time, he said. “Now we are just tweaking stuff. We’ve got equipment that’s very efficient, and we get more with the same package, but the production level has leveled off. Every iteration of machines is not jumping your production per day by huge amounts, even though…the cost of equipment is jumping by huge amounts.

Still, I have a huge passion for this industry that I’ve been in and around my whole life.

It’s made a good living for a lot of people, and we love it, but it’s still a hard industry to be in.”

Gedenberg Log Trucking Serves Loggers, Mills, in Oregon, Washington

STORIA, OREGON – Gedenberg Log Trucking has had an established presence in the greater Astoria, Oregon, area since the 1970s. The company was initially started by Jim and Sheri Gedenberg, with Jim driving the truck and Sheri doing the books. During that time, the couple was also busy raising four children, some of whom now play a significant role in running the company.

“I quit hauling logs full-time about 15 years ago,” said Jim, “but I continued filling in when needed for the next decade or so.”

Now 81, Jim is happy to make parts runs and rekindle friendships at Papé Kenworth. As far as outright retirement, there is no official plan for when that will happen.

If the ‘R’ word ever creeps into Jim’s vocabulary, his offspring are already primed to take over the operation. When Sheri retired more than a decade ago, their daughter, Shelly Gedenberg-Solum, took over the bookkeeping duties after working as a local 20

emergency medical technician for 20 years.

Shelly now runs the day-to-day business as the office manager while Sheri enjoys her mom and grandmother status.

While the couple’s other daughter, Laurie, kept busy running a restaurant, their sons, Bob and Mike, eventually played roles in the business. In the early days, Jim had two trucks rigged with a quick-change option that allowed him to haul chips as well as logs. With that option, Bob was able to haul chips with his father in the evenings while he was a high school senior.

“They would follow each other from the Crown Zellerbach sort/chipping yard in Warrenton to the mill in Wauna,” said Shelly.

“After Bob graduated from high school, he worked full-time driving Gedenberg log trucks for 33 years!”

Mike also started driving log trucks with his dad right out of high school. He eventually went out on his own while still in his early twenties in 1992. Today, Mike owns six trucks.

Kenworth Country

Gedenberg Log Trucking currently owns and operates 10 trucks. Since purchasing his first Kenworth in 1975, Jim has bought 36 Kenworth vehicles. He only keeps 10 trucks in his rotation, though. The muchanticipated newest addition arrived in late July. “Our newest truck, number 36, is a 2023 Kenworth W900L, with a 2023 Van Raden trailer,” said Shelly.

Jim has been a lifelong devotee to Kenworth products. Shelly noted, “Jim doesn’t run anything but Kenworth long loggers. In fact, he has been known to say on more than one occasion, ‘There is no other truck than a Kenworth!’ ” The Gedenberg fleet includes Kenworth models from 2023, 2021, 2020, 2017, 2013, 2009, 2008, and 2006. “Each long logger is a six-axle truck that is able to haul up to 88,000 pounds,” said Shelly. The company also has a 2011 Ford mechanic truck.

ContractorProfile cap-and-trade bill calling for a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Gedenberg truck driver Jeff Leavy viewed the legislation as writing on the wall. At the same time, Jeff became aware that one of Stimson Lumber’s seven mills was closing. He immediately called Shelly.

“When Jeff called me that night, he was definitely hot and worried about other jobs and mills going away,” recalled Shelly. “He was worried about the potential domino effect within the timber industry.”

Jeff felt he needed to do something

At the time, Betsy Johnson was a Democratic state senator representing the North Coast region of Astoria. know it,” said Jeff. “I asked a few friends as well as Shelly to help me form a group to fight back.”

The battle cry of Timber Unity (#Timberunity) was born. Seemingly within a few days it took off quicker than lightning.

After Jeff ’s initial meeting with Johnson, he began reaching out to anybody and everybody, especially other drivers. While continuing his grassroots campaign, Jeff also started a Facebook page with the tagline #Timberunity. Before long, the Facebook page had a following of more than 60,000 people.

Shelly helped him design a #Timberunity sticker that became omnipresent in the trucking industry. Jeff handed them out every time he visited the Capitol. “Soon, there wasn’t a truck in sight that didn’t carry the #Timberunity sticker,” he said.

Moving Forward

Jim quit hauling logs full-time about 15 years ago but continued to fill in as needed for about another 10 years.

Now age 81, he makes parts runs for the company.

Fast forward to the present, and Timber Unity is but a memory for Jeff. Its lasting impact, however, is still very much felt throughout the timber industry. While it began as a grassroots campaign inspired by truck drivers, farmers, and loggers, it morphed into a political circus of sorts.

Currently, politics and political action committees have overtaken the original purity of #Timberunity.

Jeff is still fighting the good fight. After resigning a few years ago as a Timber Unity board member, he now represents a group of

10,000-plus called Oregon Natural Resource Industries (ONRI). The new organization is taking up where Timber Unity left off, according to Shelly. “They are basically watching out for bad legislation, not only for logging, but fishing, mining, farming, and other industries, too,” she said.

Timber Unity got the attention of the public, especially in rural areas. In addition to climate change, which is always at the top of the mind in the logging industry, other issues are a concern. Shelly noted, “Loggers replant three trees for every one they harvest, and log trucks are using Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) systems, which decrease exhaust carbon output. This is why so many of us in this industry are angry over constantly being called the bad guy. America needs truckers!”

While the electric truck is a nice piece of equipment, it isn’t a reality for Gedenberg Log Trucking today. “We had the chance to see an EV truck recently at Portland Papé Kenworth,” said Shelly. “Though they are nice in many ways, they cost nearly four times more than our last new truck purchase.”

Working in the timber industry is not without roadblocks or challenges. But over the years, the Gedenberg family has proven that things work well when the family works together. That philosophy also holds true for the extended logging family throughout Oregon and the country.

for Winterizing Your Machines

ITH SNOW and winter weather on the horizon – if not in your region already – make sure to get your logging equipment ready for the harsh conditions of the winter months. Freezing temperatures, frozen ground, snow and ice can put a strain on your equipment. Follow these tips to make sure your machines are ready to work in the snow and cold this winter.

1. Follow the Manual

First, review the machine’s operating and maintenance manual for recommended service intervals, a checklist of seasonal maintenance items, and oil and fluid recommendations. The manual will explain which machine components should be regularly inspected, including fluids and filters, the battery, tire pressure, grease intervals and heating/defrosting systems. By following a good preventive maintenance program, as outlined in the manual, you can better prepare your equipment for winter.

You and your operators should also request training on proper maintenance techniques from your local equipment dealer.

They will help you become familiar with decals and key maintenance points on the machine.

2. Switch to a Winter Fuel

As the temperature drops, switch to the appropriate diesel fuel. Diesel is commercially available in many grades, the most common being No. 1, No. 2, and a winterized blend.

No. 1 grade diesel fuel has lower energy components than its counterpart, No. 2 grade, because paraffin (a type of wax) has been removed from the chemical mix. The absence of this chemical allows it to remain in liquid form during the winter months.

The downside of No. 2 diesel is its tendency to transform into a thickened gel when the temperature drops. This often leads to hard starts and other complications during winter.

Winterized diesel fuel is a combination of No. 1 and No. 2. The blend holds a higher concentration of No. 1 grade fuel and is used when temperatures become too cold, starting at 14 degrees. The combination of both grades should contain enough energy components and lubricant properties to reduce the chance of the chemical mix gelling in colder temperatures.

Investing in quality fuel blended appropriately for the climate and season may give you better peace of mind, lower your consumption, provide fewer filter changes, and deliver long component life. (continued on page 26) 24

3. Change Engine Oil

Colder temperatures can affect your machine’s ability to run efficiently, especially if it does not have the proper engine oil. In cold weather, oil gets very dense and might have a hard time at start-up circulating through the system without proper lubrication. However, if the oil is too thin, it won’t stick to the components.

We recommend using 10W40 genuine engine oil to protect a machine’s vital engine components if you are working in a climate ranging from zero to 100 degrees. If you are in a region where it gets colder than zero degrees, switch to a different blend engine oil, like 5W40.

Using the incorrect diesel engine motor oil can cause costly damage to your machine’s internal components. They can become plugged or corroded, ultimately working inefficiently or not at all. Refer to your machine manual for instructions on filling your equipment at the recommended intervals with the appropriate fluid in the correct increments.

4. Check the Battery

Before winter weather hits, inspect your machine’s battery and wires to make sure they haven’t frozen or become stressed due to the temperatures. There is always a draw on the battery, so it will need to be charged after use unless it has been maintained or disconnected while in storage.

In ideal conditions, say 75 degrees, you can expect to get 95-99 percent capacity out 26

of the battery. However, if the temperature is 32 degrees, the battery will only deliver around 75 percent of its capacity. In certain extreme cold storage applications, where the temperature is zero or lower, delivered power can be as low as 40 percent of capacity.

Batteries should always be fully charged in cold weather. A trickle charger can be connected to help build the voltage at a lower rate, which can improve battery life. It is a good idea to inspect and clean the battery connections. Corroded terminals can cause hard-starting and charging issues. You can also use a battery blanket to help keep the battery warm when the machine is not in use.

5. Inspect Diesel Exhaust Fluid

Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) is now used in almost all Tier 4 Final engines and it will freeze in temperatures below 14 degrees.

When adding DEF, leave room for expansion; DEF can swell in volume in the winter months.

Storing DEF in the shop or fueling area is another consideration. Make sure you have stored your bulk supplies of DEF where they can’t freeze; otherwise, you’ll have to thaw them out before dispensing.

6. Adjust Engine Coolant

As you run the engine, inspect the coolant to make sure it is free of impurities. If the coolant in your engine needs to be replaced, choose the best grade for your machine and region. For your machine to perform well in colder weather, the antifreeze mix must be properly blended.

To prevent the coolant from freezing in

sub-zero temperatures, use a 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze. In less severe cold you can use a higher percentage of water, like a 60/40 mix.

7. Use a Block Heater

Warm up the engine before starting work with a block heater — available as an option on most forestry equipment. Running the engine for 5 to 10 minutes gives it a chance to warm up, making it easier on your equipment and essential components.

The heater makes it easier to start the machine and reduces wear on engine components. Waiting for the engine oil and coolant to heat up helps ensure you won’t damage the engine.

8. Prep for Storage

When you are done with your equipment for the day, park it in an enclosed, heated facility or out of the wind, if possible, to protect it from the elements.

Cold weather can be brutal on forestry equipment. By following these tips, you can better prepare your machines for whatever winter throws at them.

Hampton Lumber Establishes Endowment for Community College

Hampton Lumber & Family Forests announced the creation of a Hampton Lumber Scholarship endowment for Tillamook Bay Community College in Tillamook, Oregon.

The endowment will provide scholarships for students in the college’s forestry and manufacturing and industrial technology (MIT) programs.

“The health and vitality of our communities has always been a priority for Hampton,” said Hampton Lumber CEO Steve Zika.

“Ensuring opportunities and career pathways for local youth is a big part of that.”

While Hampton already offers undergraduate and trade school scholarships to children, spouses, and domestic partners of employees, the new scholarship is the company’s first public educational endowment.

Hampton has operated a mill in Tillamook since 1986 and was a founding partner in the college’s MIT program.

The Associate of Science degree in forestry program was launched in 2018 for students interested in transferring to a four-year program in forestry.

“The Tillamook Bay Community College Foundation Board of Directors feels incredibly grateful to strengthen our partnership with Hampton Lumber,” said Britta Lawrence, executive director of the foundation. “Endowments exist into perpetuity, and this gift will be impactful to MIT, agriculture and natural resources students forever.

Hampton operates four mills in Oregon and owns roughly 100,000 acres of timberland in northwest Oregon to help supply them.

However, the majority of the timber supply for the Tillamook mill comes from surrounding private and public working forestlands, including the Tillamook State Forest.

“Northwest Oregon is one of the best places in the world to grow and manufacture wood products and demand for lumber for housing and other projects is increasing steadily,” said Zika. “There are lots of local opportunities for young people looking to make a career in the forest sector, and we

Washington Paper Mill, Parent Firm Are Purchased by Atlas Holdings

The Port Townsend Paper Corp. mill in Port Townsend, Washington, has been acquired by Atlas Holdings, a private investment and equity firm located in Greenwich, Conn. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

The acquisition was part of a larger transaction that included Crown Paper Group, a holding company created in 2015, and acquired Port Townsend Holdings Company, which includes the Port Townsend paper mill in Port Townsend; the Crown Packaging plant in Vancouver, B.C.; the Boxmaster packaging plant, also in Vancouver; and Distribution Centers in Kelowna, B.C., and Calgary, Alberta.

The paper mill in Port Townsend is one of Jefferson County’s largest employers with more than 300 workers. No information was immediately available about any changes in store for the mill.

Port Townsend City Manager John Mauro said, “We heard about it a little before it happened, so we are aware.”

Atlas Holdings is a private equity firm founded in 2002. It invests in numerous varied industries in addition to paper products and packaging.

Forest Engineering Council Plans Western Conference

Log Loader Pins, Crushes Unseen Yarder Engineer Background

On a fall day in the Pacific Northwest, a yarder engineer was operating a yarder on a timber sale until the shutdown whistle (for fire season restrictions) alerted the two choker setters to head up to the landing. The loader operator had broken a hydraulic hose on a limb that was sticking out of a deck of logs at the landing. The loader operator asked the yarder engineer to help him fix the hose, and together they repaired it. Weather was not considered a factor.

Personal Characteristics

The experience and training of the crew was unknown.

Unsafe Acts and Conditions

The yarder engineer picked up one of the landing saws and went over near the log loader to flush-cut the butt ends of the decked trees. The loader operator walked over to the log loader and climbed into the cab. He started the machine and rotated the log loader to move the grapple toward trees that needed processing.

Accident-Injury

The yarder engineer was standing behind the log loader. As the log loader rotated, he was struck and crushed between the corner of the machine counterweight and the butt end of a log. He was seriously injured, suffering lacerations to his back and internal abdominal damage. It is unknown if the employee ever returned to work.

Recommendations for Correction

Workers on the ground near operating machines should never approach within range of the machine without receiving visual acknowledgment from the operator that he understands their intention. Machines operated close to each other should always be separated by enough distance to prevent nearby personnel from getting pinned, struck, or crushed during operation. An unimpaired horizontal clearance of not less than three (3) feet should be maintained between the rotating superstructure of any machine

and any adjacent object or surface.

The supervisor on site should be provided with adequate information to acknowledge that an employee would be in a hazardous location, and potentially injured, when the log loader was moved or rotated.

Ponsse has launched the new HH360 harvester head rotator. The innovative rotator enables the harvester head to rotate 360 degrees freely without limitations.

Washington State Agency Fails to Disclose Environmental, Social Impacts of Carbon Plan

he Washington Department

of Natural Resources (DNR) is rushing to approve a ‘carbon project’ that would remove 10,000 acres of operable forested state trust lands in western Washington in order to lease the acres to private interests under the guise of reducing carbon emissions.

Instead of selling timber to local manufacturers as required by law, the carbon scheme seeks to sell carbon credits in an unregulated voluntary carbon market for a fraction of the timber’s fair market value. The plan would effectively shut down thousands of acres of working forests to help greenwash polluters while neglecting the DNR’s fiduciary responsibility to state trust land beneficiaries.

In a unanimous opinion in Conservation NW v. Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz, the Washington State Supreme Court earlier this year reaffirmed that the Enabling Act of 1889 and the state constitution created trusts that benefit defined beneficiaries. The court ruled that DNR has a real, enforceable trust mandate to manage state trust lands with an undivided loyalty to defined beneficiaries. The court recognized the agency meets its obligations by sustainably harvesting timber and generating revenue to support schools, universities, and other public services that benefit all Washingtonians.

Despite this strong mandate, the department is pressing forward with a scheme that will cost beneficiaries millions of dollars of non-tax revenue that could be used to improve public school facilities, purchase emergency equipment for firefighters and first responders, support libraries (such as Timberland Regional Library), and maintain county roads, among other public priorities.

State trust lands in Western Washington are managed under a 70-to-100-year Habitat Conservation Plan. This agreement with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and National Marine Fisheries Service removed nearly 50 percent of the roughly 1.4 million acres of trust lands in Western Washington from management. Yet anti-forestry groups continue seeking to undo the trust mandate and remove even more acres from management.

DNR recently concluded a brief 14-day public comment period after rejecting requests from beneficiaries, local governments, state legislators and the forest sector to extend the comment period to give stakeholders

more time to analyze the project and comment. The agency completed a simple State Environmental Policy Act checklist that provided no specifics, such as project locations or impacts to the 2019 Sustainable Harvest Calculation (SHC). DNR also has failed to respond to letters from about two dozen legislators since the spring, including a letter from legislative leaders and a letter from 22 legislators from Central and Eastern Washington expressing concerns about the project and the lack of public transparency.

Shortly after the close of the public comment period, DNR released maps of the proposed project areas along with estimates of volume and live standing carbon on the parcels. Piecing together what little information the agency has provided, the carbon leases are expected to generate about 90 percent less revenue than traditional timber harvests. Yet the agency is failing to fully analyze the project’s impact on funding for schools and other public services. Not only is this analysis required by the State Environmental Policy Act, it also goes to the core of the DNR’s fiduciary responsibility to the beneficiaries of the trust lands.

The agency has ignored calls from beneficiaries to properly and legally account for how the scheme affects Washington’s environment, communities, wildlife, and the current and future management of these working forests.

This project also risks the forest infrastructure needed to address forest health concerns and to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire and associated emissions. The Department needs to analyze this potential outcome and how it will affect the environment and local communities.

Such an analysis would clearly demonstrate that discontinuing management of our working forests is the wrong solution for climate change. Research finds that active forest management is more effective in capturing and storing atmospheric carbon in forest and wood products. Conversely, a ‘no-management’ policy results in increased carbon emissions and reduced timber supply at the expense of rural communities and public service providers.

Leakage is when the reduction in timber supply is replaced with increased timber outputs from other forestland owners, other regions of the U.S., and other countries.

Substitution occurs when more carbonintensive building products, such as concrete and steel, are substituted for a wood product

because that wood product is not available or has become too expensive. These alternatives are not beneficial to the environment or the communities that benefit from management of these lands.

The International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) have both identified scientifically based sustainable forest management and the use of long-term wood products for building as key tools in the efforts to mitigate carbon in the atmosphere. Even the Washington Legislature (in RCW 70A.45.090) recognizes the important role the forest products sector plays in mitigating carbon emissions.

Sustainable forest management essentially means repeating a never-ending cycle of planting, growing, harvesting, and sending that harvested wood – that is roughly 50 percent carbon by weight – off to become wood products, especially building products, that we use every day.

By removing state trust lands from timber management, the DNR is breaking that sustainable forest management cycle in favor of a scheme that will not reduce the emissions of greenhouse gasses but benefits deep-pocketed polluters.

Climate leadership is not a short-sighted, politically driven preservation of trees in a carbon scheme. Real climate leadership is working hard to meet sustainable harvest levels to assure local wood products are here for current and future generations to meet our housing and construction needs along with other wood products we use every day.

The DNR should be held accountable for a scheme that rewards polluters while failing state trust land beneficiaries and the people of Washington.
