Delta Air Lines Interested in WSU Aviation Biofuel Research

Delta Air Lines has shown interest in Washington State University’s (WSU) research on aviation biofuels.

WSU reported that Delta Air Lines, as part of a $2 million investment along with its partner Northwest Advanced Bio-fuels LLC (NWABF), is studying the potential for a sustainable biofuel refinery in Washington state, where researchers already have shown that wood waste can be converted into aviation fuel.

The sustainable biofuel would be produced from locally sourced forest residuals such as limbs and branches that remain after the harvesting of managed forests.

The fuel produced by the NWABF facility in Washington State is expected to be used in Delta operations at Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.

Delta Air Lines announced that it expects the feasibility study to be complete by mid-2020. At that time, Delta will evaluate the next steps in moving forward with the project’s development.

Old Timber Mill Gets New Life

It’s been almost 30 years since there has been any activity at the old timber mill site in Crescent Mills, California.

The Sierra Institute for Community and Environment (Sierra Institute) is redeveloping the site in order to create a wood products campus to address “declining forest health, increasing risk of catastrophic wildfire, and poor socioeconomic conditions within a community which historically had a strong timber industry presence,” said Sierra Institute’s landscape stewardship apprentice Danielle Berry.

Once completed, the Indian Valley Wood Products Campus will consist of a variety of businesses that generate value-added products out of small-diameter trees and other woody biomass.

Wood Product Carbon Connection The USFS

The cycle of seed, plant, grow, and harvest makes trees a natural renewable resource -and this is something the USFS would like everyone to know.

The USFS has created a helpful

illustration to help communicate how wood is not only renewable, but that by building with wood, we’re opting to store additional carbon in everyday products and buildings.

If a wood house stands for 150 years, it will store carbon until it decays or is replaced. In that time, the forest will have regrown resulting in additional carbon storage.

Using renewable wood products is like choosing a few clean, respectful tenants who stay for the duration of the lease, instead of hundreds of unwelcome tenants who never move out.

Wilbanks Trucking to Haul U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree

Wilbanks Trucking Services of Artesia, New Mexico, will literally be bringing holiday cheer to the nation when they transport the 2019 People’s Tree from New Mexico’s Carson National Forest to the West Lawn of Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. An annual gift to the nation, the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree is nicknamed the People’s Tree because it is decorated with handmade ornaments created by people from the hosting state.

Hailing from New Mexico, the 55th People’s Tree will arrive in style in a Kenworth W990 specially decaled for the event.

Wilbanks Trucking, experts in hauling oversized, overweight loads, will also provide crane support in early November when the tree is cut and prepared for the 2,000-mile journey, which will include a series of 30+ community celebrations, culminating with the official tree lighting in early December.

1,100-Acre Fuel Break Project

The U.S. Forest Service and Truckee Fire are planning a combined 1,100-acre fuel break known as the Glenshire Brockway Fuel Break Project in Truckee, California.

The break will decrease the risk of a wildfire spreading from adjacent wildlands to the community of Glenshire, to allow for rapid suppression and to create openings that allow aircraft to drop retardant more effectively.

The project will be located east of the Truckee airport; from Glenshire Drive south to Brockway Summit. Six large landowners are participating in the project including Truckee Tahoe Airport District, Truckee Donner Land Trust, United States Forest Service, Vail Corporation, Teichert Aggregates, and Sierra Pacific Industries.

This project is being funded through Cal Fire’s California Climate Investment grant obtained by the National Forest Foundation. If approved, project work may occur as quickly as early winter 2019, with most work occurring in the summer and fall of 2020 and 2021. TW

ark Gustafson, president of Gustafson Logging

Company in Astoria, Oregon, doesn’t mince words when he talks about his commitment to quality and what it means to his company’s reputation.

“What makes the New England Patriots a better football team than most of the rest of the NFL?” It’s establishing goals, not compromising those goals, caring about what you do and the people that are out there,” he says.

“Compromising the quality of work is not acceptable. Our guys are extremely productive, and yet do a great job. To me, that’s our reputation up here in the woods. To be honest, we deserve it.”

Recognition

Gustafson’s commitment is well known in the timber business and beyond. He serves on many community-based boards and commissions that deal with forest management and economic development issues.

In recognition of his outstanding work and commitment, the Associated Oregon Loggers recently announced that Mark was selected for AOL’s Logger of the Year Award for 2018.

In naming Gustafson for the award, AOL President Jaime Yraguen said, “This award is intended to recognize members (continue on page 8)

In addition to his multi-tasking endeavors, Mark serves as AOL’s Northwest District Representative. His company has received numerous awards and has been recognized for excellence in the industry.

Coming Back to the Family

Gustafson Logging Company was started in 1974 by Mark’s father, Duane, about the time Mark graduated from Oregon State University’s College of Forestry with a degree in Forest Engineering.

Duane, who had previously worked for Wulger & Warila Logging Company until they dissolved, started out with virtually nothing. No equipment and no help, but he had landed a contract to log in the God’s Valley area near the North Fork of the Nehalem River. At that point, Mark, along with his brothers Wade and Clay, joined their father and went to work. It was a steep learning curve for the Gustafson family, but the addition of a used Allis-Chalmers HD6, complete with drum and fairlead, a new chainsaw, some salvaged cable, and other assorted rigging, Gustafson Logging started to make its mark in the forests and tree farms of the Northwest.

Mark worked with his brothers and dad for a few months, then left the business to put his degree to work. “I worked for the company for a few months until I got a job with a big forest products company up on Vancouver Island, BC. I was up there for two and a half years, and then decided that I wanted to work for the family business. I came back in ’77. Been here ever since.”

Growth the Hard Way

Growing a business is never easy. In the beginning, Gustafson Logging etched out a good living for all involved but stayed relatively small. In the early 80s, the company incorporated and began to evolve into a much larger outfit due to increased opportunities through an association with Longview Fiber.

The company began adding equipment and personnel as the logging contracts dictated.

In 1984, Gustafson bought their first yarder and added cable logging to their skidding operation. Currently, Gustafson Logging fields three sides, two of which are yarder outfits and one ground-based side.

“The 172s fit the country we log in the best.”

“We have had, for about the last 15 years, Madill 172s,” says Mark. “We really like them. Earlier on, we had 071s and a HAWK yarder. For the mix we have up here it’s the 172s that fit the country we log in the best.

At times we’re a bit oversized, but we have our share of big canyons, and you need one of those big yarders to do the job. Anymore, if we’re not logging 1,000 feet, it doesn’t seem like it’s worth setting the yarder up.

But of course, we do it.”

In addition to the Madill towers, Gustafson relies on Deere and Link-Belt loaders and processors to get the job done.

His stable of forest machines includes two John Deere 3156s with Waratah heads and a Link-Belt 240 equipped with a Pierce stroker. In addition, Gustafson runs three older D8s that are used for tail holds and a John Deere 527 dozer and skidder. “We

bought one of the Deere 3156 processors and a Link-Belt 4040 shovel last year,” Mark says. “We’ll probably buy a couple loaders or shovels this year. Anyway, that’s the plan.”

The company also sticks to an equipment philosophy meant to keep the iron working for the crew rather than the crew working on the iron. “We’ve always been of the mind that we are going out to log every day, which means our equipment needs to be running every day. With things like loaders, processors, that type of thing, we start looking at turning them at about 7,000 hours, which is about three years,” says Mark.

When purchasing new machines, Gustafson recognizes some equipment brands have more appeal than others, but if the price of a machine is somewhat similar,

he will defer to what the operator would rather run.

Currently, Mark and his son Chad are company principals, running the three sides and employing 29 people. Both falling and hauling are contracted out. The company has worked for Stimson, along with Greenwood Resources, Weyerhaeuser, and Hampton.

A Bittersweet Ax Man

In 2007, the first season of the History Channel’s reality series called Ax Men featured Gustafson Logging as the show’s main subject. At the time, Mark thought it would be a good idea, but that thought quickly vanished after he saw the first episodes.

“Ax Men was a sweet and sour experience. We were approached in ’07 when they began season one. We happily decided to be part of it, even though we didn’t receive a dime for being on the program. We saw it as a way to show the world what we do and how we care,” Mark says. “After the program started airing, it became obvious that Hollywood’s intent was a little different than what we were hoping to have on the show.

We made it through the first season, but that was the end of our acting career.” (continued on page 12)

Logger, First and Foremost

A younger Mark Gustafson in the days of big trees.

Mark Gustafson readily admits to having a great deal of pride in his operation and the crews that work for him. He knows that other loggers would say his company does a good job. That they work hard — that they are productive and do the job right.

“The thing I am proudest about is from the time my dad started the company, our intent was to go out and log, and do things the best way we knew how, and as we added crew and equipment, we created a family atmosphere with a whole bunch of people that care about each other and what they do every single day. We’ve been able to not have to compromise those principals. And to have the reputation that we do, to me, it’s great,” he says.

“You know,” Mark adds, “Anyone who has a passion about a career they want to pursue, and logging is no exception, relies on their family for support. I’m the luckiest guy in the world because I have been fortunate to have that support from my wife Melinda and our kids, to have logged with my Dad for 20 years, and hopefully with my son for 20 more.”

ayne Stone Logging

Inc., based out of Sandy, Oregon, officially started almost 40 years ago, in 1983. The Stones have a pictorial history of the beginning of their business in the form of a photo album. It’s full of action shots, equipment, and houses they rented in order to be close to the jobs they worked on, in the small town of Birkenfeld, Oregon, and locations along the Oregon coast and Washington, including Mount St. Helens.

“Here’s our first loader,” Wayne points out. “That was an old slack pulling carriage.

It went on the sky line just like the motorized carriage. It was hard and took a lot to learn how to run it.”

Back in the Day

When Wayne first started logging, about all he had in the way of equipment was a truck, a swing yarder, and an old rubbertired, truck-mounted loader.

In 1985, Wayne bought a timber sale, making enough from the job to purchase an 071 Madill yarder, which, along with some newer yarders, is still in use. “They’re a lot of work, but I just like a yarder better than ground based. I’ve seen so many bad crews just tip a yarder over, or no production. A yarder is just a liability without a good crew.

Pretty simple, that’s the truth.”

Wayne doesn’t sit still. In order to see a new, faster loader at work in the woods, Wayne recently flew to North Carolina and watched a couple of Weyerhaeuser sides.

“We’ve been buying quite a bit of that Tigercat stuff,” says Wayne. “We’ve got two 830s this summer that cut at the stump, mostly for thinning, and then it cuts for the yarder sometimes too. And then an 855 steep ground tethering machine — a Tigercat. That’s brand new, the loader part;

the truck’s old. And then we actually bought another big yarder, the big Skagit, the 199.

We moved it to Dexter [Oregon] and are working on it right now. Then we’re going to move it to Florence and do a job this winter.”

Versatility

Today Wayne Stone Logging is comprised of about 40 employees, including a full-time office manager, two mechanics, several truck drivers, and loggers. Stone’s employees include son Zach, son-in-law Andrew, daughter-in-law Lindsey, and Wayne’s sister, Linda.

These days Wayne logs quite a bit for the USFS. “When we first started, I had a hell of a time getting jobs — just little private jobs.

The mills, back in the old-growth days, you kind of had to have a big name before they’d hire you. But after we started logging for them, they’d usually come and ask you to bid on jobs.”

But Wayne and his crew prevailed.

Through the years, they took on their share of challenging jobs and recently finished one above Turin’s pit at Mt. Hood Rock’s Brightwood quarry. “That was a fairly tough job,” says Wayne. “Now we’re going to be doing one for SDS up out of Stevenson, flying logs over Rock Creek this winter or early spring. That will be interesting to see, because when it comes out of a creek, the logs are so high up in the air.”

Current and Future Challenges

There was limited time available to interview Wayne for this story, because everyone was aware that his presence might be needed at a rally at the State Capitol against Oregon’s hotly contested HB2020, which could have a potentially devastating impact on logging and other industries.

(continued from page 15) As we prepared to leave Stone’s shop, he received a call from truck boss AJ Becker, who was sitting in one of more than 50 trucks at an I-5 rest area, ready to descend on the streets of Salem, Oregon, and the steps of the Capitol. The first four trucks in line were from Wayne’s fleet. Some think this show of support helped Oregon’s senators in their decision to walk out of the 2019 legislative session, assuring that the 16 votes required to pass the bill would not be present.

(Fortunately, the bill did not pass, and for those who have followed the movement, Timber Unity was born.)

Wayne tries to keep people working year-round. “The goal is to keep them working every day. Because once you get them, and they’re good, that’s the best way to keep them — even if sometimes we got to keep them fiddling around the shop a little.”

Wayne Stone logging has employed a number of individuals over the years, ranging from three months to over 20 years of service.

According to one crew member, Wayne expects them to “work hard, but he’s very fair.”

Wayne feels the biggest challenge right now for the company and the industry is finding workers, both loggers and truck drivers.

“The guys that stay with it really like the logging, because we can’t compete with high construction wages, especially the unions,” says Wayne. “We seem to be doing a little better this spring. Upped the pay, that helped a little, I think. We’re starting green choker setters at about $18-20 an hour. Then they’ll get up into the $30s if they’re a hook tender or operator.” Wayne also provides health insurance and a simple retirement plan, which the company matches three percent.

The company also provides a safety bonus —$250 each quarter — and usually “a pretty good Christmas bonus.”

Retirement in the Future

Wayne plans on hanging up his hard hat in about five years. However, that won’t mean the end of Wayne Stone Logging. With the next generation in place, the company is prepared to move into the future. (And both Wayne and Debbie foresee Wayne continuing to visit sites, and perhaps bid on equipment.)

Along with the investment in modern equipment that the business has made, Wayne’s kids have assured that the company will keep up with the times in other ways — like using social media.

Wayne’s recent plan to place a helpwanted ad in the local paper was rejected (and maybe even snickered at) in favor of this more modern method. If you check out their Facebook page, you’ll see some amazing pictures and video of jobs in progress, along with a recruitment post, just in case you want to be part of this dynamite team poised for the future.

s operations manager of Bridgewater Logging, Matt Cron has run every piece of logging machinery there is. Yet operating the new machine the company acquired in November 2018 makes him nervous — even though it’s small enough to fit comfortably in the backseat of Matt’s pickup. Just as the processor was a game-changer for the industry, a drone has proven to be a gamechanger for Bridgewater Logging.

Making an Investment

Matt credits his Uncle George, president of Bridgewater Logging, for suggesting they invest in a drone (also known as unmanned aircraft system or UAS). George heard through word-of-mouth about drones being used on logging operations. Matt contacted Mark Standley, owner of Oregon-based Pacific UAV Technology, to learn more.

Pacific UAV is currently the only company in the Pacific Northwest creating a drone package for logging companies.

After seeing a demonstration,Bridgewater Logging made the investment of $45,000.

“It’s a big investment,” Matt admits, “but it’s worth it if you want to save the guys.”

As for how the crew responded to their new partner, dubbed the Hector 5, Matt says, “My guys love it, especially my hook tender.”

Saving Time

A 15-year veteran with Bridgewater Logging, Jesus Diaz has been their full-time

hook tender for eight years, and Matt Friese joined a few years ago. Because of Hector 5, this is the first year that Diaz and Friese no longer lug haywire across the valley and over the ridgetop to the tailholt in the back of the unit. Instead the Hector 5 flies that distance with a 1/4 X-Trema rope that is then attached to the tailholt. Jesus attaches the haywire to the rope, and it’s strung back across the tree tops, hanging the skyline in a fraction of the time. Work that used to require a day is now completed in less than an hour.

“It’s amazing how much work it cuts out for Jesus and Friese,” Matt explains, adding, “We’ve made their lives so much easier.”

That being said, the drone cannot replace all the work that Jesus performs. He is still just as busy scouting the locations for the skyline anchors, but now he directs Matt via radio when to drop the rope at each anchor site, while Friese assists with the launch of the drone.

Learning Curve

Describing his experience working with Mark Standley at Pacific UAV, Matt says Standley was “unbelievable to work with.”

Standley tutored Matt on how to operate the drone and use the accompanying software that tracks each flight and generates statistics such as flight time and distance flown.

On an iPad, Matt can view the miles and miles of rope flown since November: around 70 flights with an average of 2,500 to 3,800 feet per flight.

While the drone has reduced the time spent manually running lines, Matt says he

must be more proactive in planning work flow. Depending upon where the new lines need strung, he prefers to fly the drone from the ridgelines to avoid shutting down the tower. When launching the drone, the area needs to be cleared, both on the ground and in the air.

Regarding issues of strength and visibility, Bridgewater prefers to use a high-tensile bright orange 1/4 X-Trema rope sold at Harbor Saw & Supply in Aberdeen, Washington. A weight is attached to the end of the rope, so it remains level when being flown. A ribbon is also attached to help increase its visibility, because at a thousand feet away, the rope can disappear against a gray sky backdrop.

Although the greatest benefit of the drone is making work safer for Jesus, the trees benefit as well. Previously, when the haywire was run along the ground, raising the cable would scar the trees and potentially cause a safety hazard.

“Now you can’t see any damage to the trees because the drone flies the rope over the top, which in turn guides the haywire and skyline over the top,” explains Matt.

In reflecting upon the purchase, Matt doesn’t see any downside to investing in the drone. He admits that the initial costs made him skeptical, but the investment was necessary for the safety and longevity of the crew.

And what is his uncle’s reaction to the drone? “George has never seen it fly,” Matt chuckles, “but he trusts the new technology.”

Tips for Purchasing a Drone

drone? Here are some helpful tips and websites that Nicole Bridgewater used when working through the process of purchasing a drone for Bridgewater Logging.

To fly a drone commercially in the United States, a company must first register it with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Registering costs $5.00, and if it’s done online, a Certificate of Registration is immediately issued, along with a registration number that needs to be placed on the drone.

The online process takes about five minutes, and the certificate is good for three years.

The operator is also required to get a

he would have saved if he had used a drone.

He now sees the landscape and wind from a pilot’s perspective rather than a logger’s because both factors affect the drone’s flight path. “Everything is about the weather,” he explains.

Although the drone is water-resistant, Matt avoids flying in the rain and tries to refrain from pushing the bar when flying in some conditions to avoid running out of battery power. “There is a hard time limit [for the battery] and wind will affect the amount of time in the air,” Matt says.

When running three or more lines, he must be strategic in which line is flown first to ensure there is adequate battery power to finish the work. The company invested in three batteries, and after each flight, the batteries are swapped out and charged to ensure there is enough power for the subsequent flight.

pilot’s license from the FAA. In this case, because the UAS weighs between 0.55lbs to 55lbs, Matt obtained a Part 107 remote pilot’s license. The license requires the operator to pass a recurrent knowledge test every two years from an approved knowledge testing center; complete FAA Form 8710-13; and pass a background check, among other things. There are online testing companies, but Matt chose to take a two-day training class at an approved testing location in Olympia, Washington. The test was hard, he admits, but he passed.

The last piece is insurance. The FAA does not require it but in Bridgewater’s operations, the drone is used for tower logging,

mostly on Weyerhaeuser and Hancock Timberlands, and they require coverage.

Drone insurance is still new to most insurance companies, so Bridgewater went with a company recommended by the manufacturer, Oregon-based Hagan Hamilton Insurance.

paying close attention to all aspects of a good maintenance program can, over time, literally cost an operation thousands of dollars in unnecessary repairs, downtime, and the premature purchase of new tires.

Choosing the Right Tire

Francis asserts that proper selection of tires and wheels when purchasing a machine or buying replacement tires truly is an important part of a maintenance program. “If you do select the correct tire and wheel assembly up front, you’re going to put yourself ahead of the game as far as maintenance goes. Machines are getting bigger and more

powerful; they’re expected to do more, to be more productive. We work closely with OEMs and the aftermarket to make sure our tires meet their needs and ensure the cost per hour over the life of a tire is the lowest it can be.”

However, Francis points out that not every setup is ideal for every forest setting.

What might be a good solution for one logger or for one situation might not be ideal for another. The setup selected for a machine, he says, has an impact on tire life and productivity.

Conditions

To optimize tire and wheel configurations, the purchaser of a new machine should consider the conditions the machine is likely to operate under and select tires based on those expected conditions.

“Let’s say they’re carrying heavier loads,” says Francis. “Generally the tire that comes from the equipment dealer is not the topof-the-line tire; it’s usually something they can get at a lower price point just to get tires on that equipment and send it out to the customer.”

He adds, “Often, the customer requires a higher load rating in order to carry the load they’re working with out in the field. Just for example, if someone gets a tire that’s a 26 ply rated tire, and the conditions they’re working in really require a 30 ply rated tire, they are losing an average of about 3,000 extra pounds per tire of load carrying capacity. If you don’t make the upgrade, you will just destroy the tire. That’s something that needs to be taken into consideration.”

EducationSpotlight small things that end up causing big problems. Operators need to regularly check that valve caps are on tightly and that valve stems are protected from being sheared off during operation and visually inspect tires regularly to assure potential problems are detected before permanent damage is done to a tire.

“When you pay close attention to maintenance, you’re not going to have as many changeovers in the field, and that means less downtime,” Francis emphasizes.

An example Francis mentions is the recommended optimal air pressure, which will differ between tire manufacturers. “Operators need to understand how important it is to have that manufacturer’s recommended air pressure in the tires. Everyone might have a different recommended air pressure based on their own process. Optimum performance requires paying attention to the manufacturer’s recommendations.”

Tires It’s the Little things

When it comes to tires, the little things matter. “A forest operation is one of the hardest I’ve ever seen on tires and wheels,” says Francis, adding as often as not it is the

result in the load being shifted to the tire with less pressure, and that can cause damage prematurely,” he says.

“The operator training aspect of maintenance is second to none in importance,” says Francis. He adds it involves more than just regular visual inspections for issues and making sure tire pressures are maintained.

“Maybe the operator wanted a smoother ride, so they let some air out. It’s a really bad practice that reduces the life of the tire, but I’ve seen it happen.”

Routing & Communication

Equipment owners can also save a lot of money for their operation if they train their operators to route carefully, avoiding stumps, debris, and the other things that can cause tire damage.

Says Francis, “Some of these guys can do it in their sleep, but some may need to be reminded from time to time.”

Last, Francis says, “Open lines of communication are important. Titan has a good dealer network out there, and loggers contact us directly all the time. Use the communications network; get questions answered before you buy a tire, not after.”

Washington State Legislators Tour Mills

AFRC staff organized recent mill tours for Washington State legislators to learn more about the wood products manufacturing sector and the importance of the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) timber sale program.

Hosted by Sierra Pacific Industries (SPI), the first tour took place August 13 at SPI’s new Shelton mill followed by a second tour August 21 at its Burlington mill.

Senator Christine Rolfes (D-Bainbridge Island) attended the tour in Shelton where

SPI showcased the state-of-the-art facility and outlined the most pressing issues facing our industry, including log supply and workforce development.

The DNR timber sale program was front and center during the Burlington tour, where the mill relies on DNR timber for a large portion of its log supply. In addition to touring the mill, local legislators were given an overview of the DNR timber sale program.

In July, Washington legislators participated in tours of the Colville and OkanoganWenatchee National Forests. The tours provided legislators a greater appreciation of

Students in Hard Hats in the Woods

The Sierra Cascade Logging Congress Sierra Cascade region held their two-day In-Woods demonstration in May 2019, hosting more than 950 students and teachers. Participants wore hard hats sponsored

by Crown Motors, Sierra Pacific Industries, Creekside Logging, Blue Ridge Forest Management, Bejac Corporation, Papé Machinery, and Peterson Cat. Fresh water and restrooms were provided by Snow Mountain Spring Water and Big Valley Sanitation.

Of special interest was the demonstration by Rick & Rock—Ron and Jeannie Gallagher’s team of log hauling horses, who displayed power and strength with a calm and patient demeanor. Students were educated about the valuable contribution horses played in logging’s past, and the importance of caring for their health and wellness.

Shasta College Heavy Equipment Program, Shasta College Timber Sports Team, and EMT/Firefighters presented stations during the event, and participants witnessed demonstrations such as the hot saw, timber faller, tree planting, road building equipment, and a chipper that could be operated by remote control—which is said to have been a HUGE hit with the students!

Endangered Species Act Regulations Released

The AFRC reported that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and the National Marine Fisheries Service (NFMS) issued final revisions to regulations implementing the Endangered Species Act (ESA), which are designed to bring implementation consistency across the two agencies.

The final rules apply to ESA Sections 4 and 7. FWS rescinded its Section 4(d) rule, which allowed threatened species to receive all the protections that endangered species receive through Section 9 of the ESA. The Section 4 rules also clarify factors for listing and delisting a species. Finally, the rules require FWS and NFMS to evaluate whether areas that are occupied by a species are sufficient to support conservation of the species before designating essential unoccupied critical habitat — meaning they are “reasonably certain the area will contribute to the conservation of the species and the area contains one or more of the physical or biological features essential to the conservation of the species.”

Albach Diamant 2000

atching the self-propelled Albach Diamant 2000

wood chipper was like watching a Swiss Army knife in action — if the Swiss Army knife had a 33foot crane with 42-inch wheels, and could travel 50 miles per hour on the highway.

This past August, individuals got to see firsthand what the Albach Diamant 2000 was all about at a demonstration held in Monroe, Washington.

Jimmy Martineau from Distinctive Tree Care, who has had over 1,000 hours operating the machine, came out from Connecticut to show off the chipper’s many features.

“We do a lot of state work and roadside clearing [in Connecticut],” said Martineau.

“We use a Sennebogen to cut. And then the Albach [Diamant 2000] follows it and chips.

It’s fast and efficient, and safe. You only have three people on a job site instead of probably ten.”

Martineau said it took a little time to get acquainted with the machine, but that was because there is nothing else like it. “So you can’t really practice on other things.” Now that he’s acquainted, he wouldn’t have anything else.

Efficient

What makes this machine stand out is the efficiency, which translates to cost

savings and speed. This efficiency is a result of the chipper’s ability to do the tasks of multiple machines.

“You can drive it [on the highway],” says Martineau. “It goes 50 miles an hour, so you don’t have to trailer it. So, if you’re local, you don’t have to pay anybody to move it.

It’s self-feeding, so you don’t have to have a guy running the chipper controls and also an excavator feeding the chipper. It’s costeffective, in my eyes, because of the amount of fuel. You’re paying one person’s wages and their fuel, rather than two people and double the fuel.”

Martineau adds, “You can also set it up with different screens to make certain size chips. Because if you’re selling them for

biomass, they want certain chips, and they got to be perfect.”

Helmut Seelmann, sales representative for the company added, “For those who need different specs, you can adjust the length of cut. I don’t know of any other chipper that can actually adjust the length of cut on the drum itself.”

Speed

Martineau jumped in the machine and demonstrated the mind-boggling setup and fold-up speed. Within less than a minute, the stabilizing legs were out, and the conveyor and crane were extended. In less than five minutes, the grapple was picking up material and feeding it into the machine.

What contributes to the machine’s “Swiss army knife” feel is the built-in wood splitter.

During the demonstration, when logs were too big to feed into the Diamant 2000, a wood splitter descended. Within seconds, the logs were broken into workable pieces and chipping continued.

As for the cab, it is nice, roomy, and comfortable, with a heated floor, multiple monitors, engine and driveline diagnostics, good visibility . . . and even a fridge and microwave. Martineau says he also likes the little extra built-in blower that helps him keep the floor of the cab clean.

Finding Its Place in the Industry

The chipper is currently in use in 33 countries, and the Diamant 2000 has started selling in California and Oregon. The company is looking forward to this new technology finding a home in the Pacific Northwest.

Chad Davison, owner of Pacific Tree Management based out of Monroe, Washington, was also in attendance. He recently had the chance to use the machine on the Redmond campus and was excited about the results. He says he and his crew had scheduled five days to have 83 trees topped, cut, piled, chipped, and hauled. With the Diamant 2000, he had it done in five hours.

Seelmann says the factory is just as unique as the machine. “We build about 86 percent of machines in-house. The only things not built in-house are the transmission, the Volvo 450 HP engine (758 HP available), hydraulics, glass, and crane.” The company’s goal is to have quality machines that can be operational for decades.

“It’s a high-capacity chipper capable of doing up to 1,000 [metric] tons in a day shift,” he says, adding that there isn’t another machine out there like it. Loggers can drive the chipper into the logging site, feed in material, blow it into a truck, and then drive the chipper away.

John Deere Construction & Forestry Builds New Training Facility

John Deere recently completed construction of a 7,500-square-foot facility in Coal Valley, Illinois, to better meet internal training demands, along with supporting customer visits and events. Part of the Construction & Forestry Training Campus, the three classrooms can be used separately or combined to hold 250 people for larger events, and nearly 4,000 square feet of covered canopy space is available for outdoor training and equipment walkarounds.

“The primary function of this new facility is to provide much-needed additional classroom space for dealer sales staff and technician training,” said David Reilly, manager, worldwide training, John Deere Construction & Forestry.

The facility will also include a John Deere simulator — further bridging the gap between the classroom and jobsite.

Stellex to Sell Morbark to Alamo Group

Stellex Capital Management announced it has entered into an agreement to sell Morbark LLC to Alamo Group Inc. for $352 million.

Headquartered in Seguin, Texas, Alamo Group is a leader in the design, manufacture, distribution, and service of high-quality equipment for infrastructure maintenance, agriculture, and other applications.

Founded in 1957 and based in Winn, Michigan, Morbark has been innovating and manufacturing durable, high-performance equipment for more than six decades, producing a full line of brush chippers, stump cutters, mini skid steers, forestry mulchers, and more. Stellex acquired Morbark in 2016.

Founded in 1969, Alamo has approximately 3,650 employees and operates 29 plants in North America, Europe, Australia, and Brazil, with European operations in Salford Priors, England. Completion of the transaction is expected to take place in 4Q 2019.

Munis to Retire from Idaho Forest Products Commission

Capital Press reported that Betty Munis, founding director of the Idaho Forest Products Commission, plans to retire Nov. 15 after more than 27 years on the job.

She is succeeded by Jennifer Okerlund, who took over the position Sept. 23 after 16 years working as communications manager for the state Department of Parks and Recreation.

“Betty has done a tremendous job for the forest sector, helping opinion leaders and the general public understand what we do,” Commission Chairman Jack Buell said in a news release. “We are sad to see her go, but we welcome Jennifer’s energy, creativity, and statewide connections.”

A talk with Pat Weiler of Weiler Forestry – the new owner of Cat’s purpose-built forestry business

arlier this year, Weiler Forestry

Inc. entered into a definitive agreement with Caterpillar Inc. for the purchase of its purpose-built forestry business.

With this agreement, Weiler acquired Caterpillar’s purpose-built forestry product line and operations facilities in LaGrange, Georgia; Auburn, Alabama; and Smithfield, North Carolina.

Weiler currently produces an extensive portfolio of products and has a longstanding history of successfully manufacturing purpose-built equipment distributed through the Cat dealer network. Weiler Forestry is now designing and manufacturing the purpose-built forestry products, which will continue to be available through the Cat dealer network.

It’s been a busy time for Weiler Forestry, but we recently caught up with Pat Weiler, President & CEO of the company, for a brief talk.

Can you please tell us a bit about yourself, related to the industry and the company?

“Well, I began my career as a Design Engineer and became a Director of Engineering in 1983. I held multiple roles in senior management through to 1999.

I have over 35 years of experience leading the manufacturing efforts for diverse privately held agricultural and construction equipment companies.

I founded Weiler in 2000 and began producing equipment for major OEM manufacturers with the intent of developing new product. Over the last 19 years, we have 38

grown the company into a major manufacturer of multiple product lines for the paving industry. Weiler now sells through 190 sales offices and service centers worldwide.

I now lead Weiler in the development of new products, while enhancing relationships with dealers and customers.”

Can you tell us some more about the history of Weiler?

“Weiler’s track record of being a nimble, customer-driven, and very reactive manufacturer has led to its success in the paving industry. Rapidly developing new products and solutions to complement the existing Caterpillar dealer portfolio is a winning combination. Weiler is based in Knoxville, Iowa, and is a vertically integrated manufacturer of pavers, transfer vehicles, concrete mixer trucks, graders, and road wideners — and now, purpose-built forestry equipment. We rely on over 500 competent and driven employees in Knoxville and are already impressed with the talent and commitment we’ve seen from our 275 new forestry employees.”

What products did Weiler acquire from Caterpillar Inc.?

“Weiler entered into an agreement with Caterpillar Inc. to purchase the purposebuilt forestry business, which consists of wheel skidders, track feller bunchers, wheel feller bunchers, knuckleboom loaders, and related operations facilities. Caterpillar will remain producing the forestry excavator product lines as well as the complementary products that serve the millyards and other forestry segments.”

How does Forestry fit into the Weiler Portfolio?

“We believe that the purpose-built forestry product line is the ideal addition to our current product portfolio. We have a proven track record of working with Cat dealers all over the world to respond rapidly to customers with specialized product needs. We’re confident that our existing product line experience, our flexible design and manufacturing strategy, and our commitment to customers provide a strong foundation to successfully serve the purpose-built forestry segment.”

Does Weiler have plans to expand the product portfolio?

“Successfully developing and introducing new products is at the core of what we do at Weiler. We will apply the same approach to forestry, focusing on customer needs to make their jobs easier and more profitable.”

When can we expect to have Weiler branded product in the market, and will there be any immediate changes?

“We are now shipping Weiler branded products to Cat Dealers.

Customers can expect the same level of customer support they are used to from the best dealer organization in the world. We will work diligently, focusing on the needs of our forestry customers to address product needs and improve manufacturing flexibility.”

Desserts for Dreams to Benefit in Our Backyard In Our Backyard, a nonprofit organization focused on the fight against human trafficking, has been selected as the charity to benefit from the 17th Annual Desserts for Dreams luncheon, which is planned for February 21, 2020, 12:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m., during the Oregon Logging Conference.

In Our Backyard founder and Executive Director Nita Belles has written a book titled Human Trafficking in Our Backyard, to call attention to this issue.

“This year, as OLC first lady, I have selected In Our Backyard as the recipient of our fundraising efforts,” said Cathy Stratton. “In my past role as a medical assistant, we had a patient who was a local police officer. He was struggling with many stressful situations at work. One of those was the increase in human trafficking in our local area. I was amazed to learn the extent of the problem, and ashamed that I really had no idea. I’m hoping that our very diverse, generous group of women will not only support this cause, but also help raise awareness with me.”

Stratton said she is hopeful the proceeds from Desserts for Dreams will help expand awareness of the continuing problem of human trafficking. 100 percent of the proceeds raised at the luncheon will be donated to In Our Backyard. John Deere’s Upgrades and New Equipment

John Deere is rolling out upgrades to its FR22B and FR224B Felling Heads.

Compatible with select M-Series Tracked Feller Bunchers, the updated models have been redesigned to increase durability and extend the life of the wrist and head.

The new felling heads feature improved flow capability, increased hydraulic hose size and routing, and updated ring gear and frame welds, all resulting in increased durability.

John Deere also offers Intelligent Boom Control (IBC) on the 1470G Harvester – the largest harvester model available in the John Deere lineup. The IBC technology, first introduced to the harvester category in 2018, increases precision and accuracy during operation, boosting operator productivity.

In addition, the new John Deere 910G and 1010G Forwarders provide a reliable solution designed with a logger’s needs in 44

mind. Equipped with ultra-comfortable cabs and available with a variety of boom, load space, axle, and cabin options, the compact, versatile 910G and 1010G machines deliver power and productivity and can be customized.

The six- or eight-wheeled configurations are ideal for early-to-late thinning operations and smaller end final felling applications. Tigercat Releases E-Series 845 Feller Buncher

Why Industry Professionals Must Concern Themselves with Greenhouse Gas Emissions

hether tree feller,

landowner, equipment operator, sawmill owner, or forest-based commodities trader, every participant in the forest products industry is impacted by the ongoing, and often rancorous, discussion about climate change.

Keeping Learning

It is more important today than ever before that industry participants learn all they can about the climate change discussion, then participate in that discussion, offering up informed opinions about the place the forest products industry can fill in moderating the impacts of climate change on the nation’s forests.

It is not necessary to take “sides” in the climate change discussion to acknowledge that the discussion will influence the shape of the forest industry for decades to come in three major areas: public policy regarding forestry and forest harvest, product choice by end users, and public perception of the industry.

Public and Product

Regarding public policy about the use of our forests, one of the USDA Forest Service’s most clear-headed and influential scientists over the past decade, Constance Millar, wrote in 2016, “Variation in Earth’s climate system has always been a primary driver of ecosystem processes and biological evolution. In recent decades, however, the prospect of anthropogenically driven change to the climate system has become an increasingly dominant concern for scientists and conservation biologists.” (Falk, Donald A.; Millar, Constance I. 2016. Regarding product choice, the forest products industry competes with other industries for a share of the marketplace. From the smallest harvesting firm to the giants of the industry, market share is, in part, determined by the decisions architects, building contractors, product manufacturers, and 46

everyday citizens make as they specify building products. Despite its immense carbon emissions, concrete has a step up on wood, due for the most part to its preferential treatment in the LEED certification process.

Steel also competes vigorously for a place in the mind of the architect as does bamboo, an imported grass perceived to be environmentally friendly. Other competitors abound.

While those working in the forest products industry know for certain that wood is the best environmental choice by far when it comes to most construction projects, that same certainty is not always present in the minds of those making product decisions. It is up to the industry to inform decision-makers in a way allowing for knowledge-based product selections favoring forest products.

For better or for worse, based on fact or based on myth, greenhouse gas emissions are the aces in the card deck of much decision making about product in today’s world. “All other things” don’t have to be equal to tilt the decision about product choice toward the product seen as environmentally beneficial. And greenhouse gas emissions are, at least today and for the foreseeable future, the touchstone for defining the term “environmentally beneficial.”

Public Perception

Last, public perception has a huge impact on nearly every aspect of the forest products industry; sometimes an all too often negative impact. Here, the greenhouse gas emissions discussion is paramount as well. By way of example, the activist group Center For Sustainable Economy, which touts itself as “Building the DNA of the new economy,”

released a report in 2018 claiming, “OSU Research Confirms that Big Timber is Oregon’s Leading Source of GHG Emissions,” purporting to support the idea that, “All forms of logging generate carbon dioxide emissions because roughly 80 percent of the carbon dioxide stored in trees ends up being lost to the waste stream or burned in the manufacturing and consumption of lumber, paper, or biomass products.”

The Center’s study formed the basis for an intensive lobbying effort to the Oregon State legislature for changes that, if implemented, could end much, if not most, timber harvest in Oregon. Of course, the results of that “study,” and others like it, are also used nationwide by both the Center and other activist groups to lobby for dramatic change in the nation’s harvest approach.

The lesson?

In the future, as never before, the forest products industry must better address the issue of greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the industry’s activities.
