More U.S. Renters Plan to Buy in 2016

According to Zillow, in 2016 we should expect to see a surge of renters deciding to buy homes. The data suggest a 25 percent increase, totaling 5.2 million individuals purchasing homes next year.

The data also suggested that confidence in the housing market is returning.

Wyden and Wildfires

Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden voiced his thoughts on wildfires at a recent town hall meeting. With the 2015 fire season looking to be a bad one, he said one of his top priorities in the next few weeks is to fix the broken system of fighting fires.

“Understand the focus has got to be on prevention — thinning and going in there and clearing out the underbrush and small trees.”

Wyden said payment to fight these big fires should come from disaster funds, leaving money to thin and do other work to prevent the horrific fires.

Swanson Group Purchases Olympic Panel Products

Swanson Group Manufacturing LLC announced that it has acquired the assets of Olympic Panel Products LLC. Located in Shelton, Wash., Olympic Panel is the largest overlay plywood manufacturer in North America.

Swanson Group plans to relocate the Olympic Panel assets in 2016 to its stateof-the-art facility that will be constructed in Springfield, Ore. The new facility will continue to produce Olympic-branded products.

During the next twelve to eighteen months, Olympic Panel Products will continue to operate in Shelton to ensure a smooth transition for all customers and suppliers.

“Swanson is building a world-class plywood and veneer manufacturing facility in a location with an excellent workforce and log supply,” said Steve Swanson, president and CEO of Swanson Group. “We have long been impressed with the quality and depth of Olympic’s overlay product line and believe that this acquisition fits perfectly with our goal to become the leading producer of overlay panels in North America.”

Red Rock Biofuels May Be Producing Jet Fuel Soon

The Denver Post reported that Fort Collins-based Red Rock Biofuels, entered a partnership with Flagship Ventures to build a $200 million refinery in Oregon.

“These are the guys who are going to help us get over the finish line,” said Terry Kulesa, Red Rock’s CEO and co-founder.

Red Rock received a $70 million federal grant to build a refinery in Lakeview, Ore., but it wasn’t enough to fully fund the project.

“Their product saves money for customers and offers a stable alternative to the volatile crude oil market, while reducing carbon emissions — a growing priority for companies,” Brian Baynes, a Flagship partner, said in a statement.

The refinery will be located in Oregon because of Red Rock’s long-term agreements with the Collins Co., a sawmill that has been in operation since 1855 (94 years before the first jets were seen in the skies).

Making the Cut Oregon logging company continues to find success with its ‘never give up’ motto

A

t the age of 52, Mike Pihl knows

a thing or two about the forestry and logging industry. After all, he and twin brother Matt established Pihl Brothers Logging when they were just 22 years old.

“I’m just lucky to be a logger in an area where trees grow in abundance,” he says.

“The average person is not meant to be a logger. It’s just in my blood.”

Although the company grew steadily, the partnership dissolved in 1986, allowing Pihl to start Mike Pihl Logging Inc. His company has continued to expand and has become a

family affair yet again. Today, his daughter, Lindsay, is the company’s office manager and her husband, Kelly Baska, is a supervisor in the logging division. The company is based in Vernonia, Ore., northwest of Portland, near Forest Grove State Forest and Clatsop State Forest.

The Doosan Decision

Employees of Mike Pihl Logging log nearly 25 loads of Douglas fir each day, with 10 of those loads staying in the U.S. and the remainder exported to Japan, China, and Korea. To stay ahead of demand, Pihl purchased his first Doosan machine—a DX300LL-3 log loader with log

grapple attachment—from Robert Payton of Feenaughty Machinery Company to add to his lineup of machinery, including include Link-Belt, Cat, and Prentice, among others.

“The machine has great fuel efficiency and is just a good, solid machine,” Pihl says. “Plus Feenaughty and Robert Payton are just amazing to work with. Without him I wouldn’t have purchased the Doosan log loader.”

According to Pihl, the DX300LL-3 log

loader’s durable undercarriage, spacious forestry cab, precise boom geometry, and impressive lifting ability are just some of the qualities he was looking for to help log 20 acres each year. Plus, with a 213-horsepower interim Tier 4-compliant engine, his decision to purchase the Doosan log loader three months ago has become one of his bestthought-out business decisions, and Pihl hasn’t looked back since.

“I wanted something that was fuel efficient, fast, and innovative,” he says. “The Doosan log loader had all of those qualities.

It really takes a special machine to be a great log loader.”

Staying Comfortable

Pihl’s operators work approximately 11 hours a day, five days a week, so a comfortable, quiet cab and an adjustable suspension seat were important factors when deciding on a new log loader. Once his operators started

using the Doosan log loader and grapple, Pihl knew he made the right decision.

“One of my operators was a bit skeptical about the Doosan machine after working with a competitor’s machine for so many years,” he says. “However, after he tried it out, he was pleased with how it performed and how comfortable it was. Our operators have a heated seat, rearview camera, MP3 player— basically all the amenities they need.”

Pushing Past Challenges

Although the town of Vernonia (population 2,158) is known for being a logging community, Mike Pihl Logging is one of only three logging companies left in the area. Two other larger companies went out of business after the economic downturn, Pihl stated, but his company survived.

ring a bell to those who watch History Channel’s “Ax Men” — a reality TV show that follows loggers throughout the U.S. and shows how they perform day-today functions. Pihl and his crew, including his son-in-law, were featured on seasons 1 through 3. His company was also sporadically featured on seasons 4 and 5.

Pihl said being on the show was a great promotion for him and his company.

“To me it showed the viewers that there are still people in America that get up early in the morning, produce a commodity, and make the world turn,” he says.

“It’s important for people to know where they get their wood product from.”

Since “Ax Men,” Pihl has traveled throughout the U.S., giving speeches on his experience and what it takes to be a professional logger.

“The show was a great benefit to me, because it shows how hard our employees and machines work,” he says. “We are dedicated to what we do.”

“We had to look at some things and restructure our staff and thought process,” Pihl says. “I started thinking more about things in advance. Most importantly, I knew I needed to continue to keep my 25 employees happy.

I treat them better than I do myself. If they want a new machine, I try my best to satisfy their request.”

The company has since thrived, mainly due to Pihl’s business motto: Never give up.

“Things can change in a heartbeat,” he says. “Things can be going well and then the economy drops, and you are flat on your face. I really try to tell my employees to work hard, to be honest, and to never give up on anything they set their mind to.”

Expanding His Fleet

Due to the exceptional performance and feedback from his operators on the DX300LL-3, Pihl is looking to add another Doosan log loader to his fleet after winter.

“I really don’t like having a mismatched fleet, so it’s a definite possibility that we could purchase all Doosan machines,” Pihl said. “We are just starting a relationship with Doosan, and so far, it has been really great.”

A

s Darren Hall sees it, “there

are bold cutters and old cutters but not bold, old cutters.”

After being a bold cutter for 20 years, Hall realized a career change was necessary so he could become an old cutter. Though Hall didn’t know he was starting a brand-new logging company just before the recession, he found an overlooked niche, which enabled his company to survive and be poised for growth in a rebounding market.

As the owner of Pacific Logging and Processing, Hall brings 25 years of experience in the industry to each job site. A 4th generation logger, Hall says, “I have been on the stump since I could walk.” He formally entered the industry at 19 years old as a timber faller for International Paper. During his career, he worked for Weyerhaeuser and other companies as a contractor, and at one point, he oversaw 23 fallers. Hall traded the chainsaw for the shovel in 2005, and while he recognizes the change is for the better, he admits finding it hard to sit still.

Processing takes jobs within a 100-mile radius around its base of operation—spanning north to Maple Valley, south to the Columbia River, and east to the edge of the Cascades.

Instead of being a contractor for the well-known timber companies in the area, Hall primarily works for small-scale private landowners. “‘Permits to planting’ is how I describe our services because we handle everything for the landowner including marketing, surveys, and roadwork,” Hall says.

Jobs are acquired through word of mouth and referrals, and he strives to meet the landowner’s needs because “one bad word goes further than a good word.”

Sustainable Forestry Key

Sustainable forestry of their forestland is the management goal of the landowners with whom Hall works. He says, “95 percent of the landowners I work for view it as a resource.”

For owners with large parcels, Hall creates five-year management plans that balance the needs of a steady cash flow while generating a long-term sustainable yield.

And unlike companies that operate on timberlands in rural counties far from the public’s eye, Hall doesn’t have such a luxury. On

the 16-acre job site in Yelm, Wash., the work called for clear cutting a stand of 104-yearold Douglas fir that had root rot, and the resulting clearing meant the neighboring residents were losing a territorial view of what was once a forest.

Hall says that every agency had been out to survey the operation, and he takes the scrutiny in stride. “There are so many eyes on you in the private world, and we take precautions when working in sensitive areas by doing just a little extra,” he explains.

Hall says there are lots of eyes on the operation in sensitive areas, so it’s important to do “just a little extra”.

The uptick in the economy has enabled Hall to take advantage of the rent-to-purchase option offered by NC Machinery to purchase a new John Deere 2954D shovel.

ContractorProfile Hall has experience working on FSCcertified timberland, and though his company isn’t FSC-certified to keep the chain of custody intact, he would consider becoming FSC certified when the market rewards such certification.

Keeping Crews Busy

Though you might not expect jobs for small, family forestland owners to generate the volumes necessary to keep Hall’s crew busy year-round, he says, “Generally we don’t have any downtime unless we choose it.”

An average job has 60-80 loads moving 300-400 bf, which keeps one to two trucks busy each day, and Hall adds that his company moves six million feet a year. Their busiest times are April and November just prior to tax season when landowners are looking to take advantage of tax breaks.

Riding the Recession

While Hall actually cut more during the recession than prior years, he still didn’t fully escape the higher costs of doing business, and it impacted his equipment portfolio and operations.

Then the downturn arrived, and the equipment proved too expensive to keep. Hall credits Ken Thomsen, of Thomsen Timber in Olympia, for helping his company survive by leasing shovels to him when needed. Hall also contracted with other companies such as Severson Road Contractors and Carter Logging, to keep the work steady until the industry recovered.

Investing in New Equipment

The uptick in the economy has enabled Hall to reinvest in his equipment again.

He took advantage of the rent-to-purchase option offered by NC Machinery to purchase a brand-new John Deere 2954 shovel, which has paid off. “[The machine] fit our needs [and] was the right size for us,” Hall says, adding that it works flawlessly, and he likes the ability to climb in and out of the cab. Crediting Jay McKown with helping him work out the financing, Hall says “I couldn’t have done it without him.” A John Deere 2054 processor with a Waratah 622B completes his

equipment portfolio. “They’re the toughest machines out there,” Hall explains as his reason for selecting John Deere.

Keeping a Crew Happy

Though Pacific Logging and Processing officially has only two employees, Hall and Ben Stokes, who operates the processor, Hall regards his contractors who handle the falling and hauling as employees too. He worked with Southwest Cutting while at Weyerhaeuser, and now “they do everything of ours,” he says.

Their faller Solomon Ramirez is the go-to-person whom Hall chooses for his jobs. For the hauling side, “Tony [Vanhoof of Buckley] is really good about getting us the trucks,” says Hall, and Jeff is one of the regular haulers.

Supporting Hall in the administration side of the business is his longtime girlfriend Mandy who handles the permits in addition to her full-time work of delivering babies at a local hospital.

With his boots-on-the-ground experience, Hall knows what is required to retain good employees: making it as easy and simple as possible for them to do their jobs.

“And thanking them for their help goes a long way,” he says.

Another part of employee retention is maintaining a safe working environment, which is why Pacific Logging and Processing is a member of Washington’s L&I Logger Safety Initiative. In addition to creating the required safety plans, Hall says they go a step above what they need to do in order to stay safe. “You got to be alive to log another day.”

Moving to Tower Logging

Next year will see Hall transition into tower logging with the addition of a yarder, and his clientele will expand to include an industrial forestland owner; he was approached by Weyerhaeuser for work starting early next year.

Hall’s dad will also come out of retirement to help out since he has tower experience.

The Weyerhaeuser job will yield volumes not found on small, private landowner jobs.

Hall anticipates bringing the same attention to detail and quality as he has always done by being on site every day. And taking the larger jobs will fulfill his vision for Pacific Logging and Processing: “I always wanted to take the next step forward…[I] don’t want to get stagnant.”

predictable in politics, Oregon Senator Ron Wyden is not your man. Yes, he is a Democrat and often votes with his party, but on forestry issues, he does his own homework, sometimes breaking rank.

power into government buildings wherever possible. A letter to Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell and GSA Administrator Dan Tangherlini outlines Wyden’s concept.

The February 11, 2015, letter starts by noting the hesitation of GSA and the Forest Service to employ woody biomass energy in the buildings it leases. Noting the advancements by the forest industry to expand and

improve biomass options, Wyden points out the natural partnership that could occur between the Forest Service and the GSA. Yet Wyden says his constituents have reported that the two agencies are dragging their feet, especially on the Wallowa Whitman National Forest. In 2010, the forest headquarters burned and since then, GSA has stifled various new building proposals incorporating woody biomass. In the same area of Oregon, woody biomass options have increased. Wyden writes: In Oregon we are beginning to see considerable advances in the production of biomass for energy uses. Rural forestry and lumber businesses have made sizable investments in the supply chain, including pellet mills and facilities for processing the small diameter trees best suited for biomass-toenergy uses. Likewise, the Forest Service has programs in place to support biomass utilization and market development, recognizing a win-win scenario where tree thinning projects help restore ecological resilience to overstocked forests and reduce the threat of catastrophic wildfires. Fighting for Practical Solutions

Wyden’s observations clearly aren’t new to the forest industries, but it is nice to have a United States senator put together an official letter advocating such a practical solution for government buildings.

According to Wyden’s press secretary Hank Stern, the senator has made it his business to learn about pellet mills, biomass supply, and improvements to processes in woody biomass energy. Furthermore, Wyden has seen the economics when public entities add woody biomass energy capabilities to their options. His letter cites a nonprofit hospital in Enterprise, Ore., that added two biomass boilers and bought its pellets from a John Day manufacturer, saving the hospital $40,000 over previous costs in heating oil.

This type of thing is a game-changer for rural communities.

Wyden also cites the Enterprise School District switching over to a wood chip biomass heating system, saving the district $70,000 and lowering the carbon emissions by 500 tons. Anyone for better air quality cannot ignore the implications there.

But citing economic factors and even air quality factors is not the real strength

of Wyden’s letter. He points out the costs of transportation, quite often brought into the arguments against woody biomass.

For Wyden, such arguments appear to be non-starters.

One comment I have received is that the transportation distance between sites like this one in Enterprise may be the reason why GSA would oppose the use of biomass for federal facilities. However, as evidenced by the examples above, these distances do not undermine the economic benefits of biomass heat in comparison to heating oil or propane, or the environmental benefits. It is also inconsistent to assign transportation distance guidelines to biomass fuels and not to heating oil or propane, which are transported a much greater distance.

Transportation Costs

The thoughts in that last sentence bear repeating. Yes, it is “inconsistent to assign transportation distance guidelines” to one

type of fuel and not another. Over and over, the old argument is about transportation costs for woody biomass, yet what are the costs for transporting fuel oil or propane?

What are the development costs for these other fuels? And do they have the same bonus outcome woody biomass does in that removal of excess biomass improves forest health?

Interestingly, Wyden notes that right now, much of the biomass produced in the rural counties gets shipped elsewhere, even as far as Japan. The common sense of keeping the product around locally to heat and power buildings is clearly a no-brainer. Who can oppose such a practical system?

Will Wyden’s letter and official position on woody biomass energy in federal buildings have a favorable outcome? Who will oppose it? The letter is too recent, the proposal to GSA and the Forest Service too new to generate answers yet. Possibly opponents will surface, but so far, Hank Stern says Wyden’s idea has gone unopposed.

Let’s hope any update on the Wyden proposal will report good news. It is time the Forest Service, especially, gets behind the idea.

Pursuing Innovation B.C.’s Tolko Industries teams with Oregon Manufacturer

T

here’s really no other way to put it: Earl Corsi has a pretty cool job.

Corsi, woodlands manager for the Thompson Nicola Woodlands division of forest company Tolko Industries in B.C.’s Southern Interior, has the usual responsibilities of a woodlands manager, and he has taken on something extra.

Searching Out New Technology

Corsi’s special focus is to always be on the lookout—and to check out—new types of equipment.

“I’m always looking for new and different logging and log handling equipment,” says Corsi, who works out of Tolko’s office in Heffley Creek, north of Kamloops, B.C. This focus led him directly to the GP grapple processor head manufactured by Pierce Pacific Manufacturing, at their plant in Portland, Ore. In an era of multi-tasking, the Pierce Pacific GP grapple processor looks to be the perfect machine for the times. It combines the functions of a grapple and the utility of a processor into a single machine.

At a price less than that of an ordinary processing head, loggers can increase their productivity with a machine that sorts, loads, and shovels like a grapple—and delimbs, measures, and cuts like a processor–more than six functions in one attachment, says the company.

Accomplishing the tasks of two machines, loggers will attain significant savings in time, fuel, labor, and maintenance costs, not to mention radically improved equipment utilization.

Corsi came across the GP when it was still fairly new, and there were only nine or ten GP heads out there, mostly in Oregon.

“At that point, Pierce wasn’t ready to expand beyond that, to Canada. But I let them know we were very interested and asked them to keep us in mind.” (continued on page 24) 22

Deciding on the GP

Corsi made two “intel” trips to Oregon, to see the Pierce manufacturing facility, and to see the GP in action. Illustrating the company’s level of interest in the GP, one of the trips included members of Tolko’s founding family, the Thorlaksons, who take a keen interest in new and emerging technologies in the forest industry.

With those trips, Tolko confirmed that Pierce was ready to enter the Canadian and B.C. market—and that Tolko would work on their end to help introduce the GP to their contractors.

Tolko has now purchased two of the GP heads, which are being supported and serviced in B.C. by dealer Inland Parker Pacific.

“We stationed one head in the southern interior of B.C., doing a similar type of wood profile to what they have in Oregon, and what the head was designed for,” explained Corsi.

“We took the other GP head to Quesnel, in the Central Interior, and put it in the kind of wood and terrain that it wasn’t necessarily designed for, just to see what it could do.”

After six months, the GP has proven its stuff successfully in the two different types of trials.

So far, it’s been a good fit. The GP’s innovative design allows it to reposition long logs, handle bundles of short wood and distribute brush. It can be used with both new and pre-existing log loaders, making it economical as well as efficient.

Encouraging Innovation

Tolko took on the job of introducing the new attachment to its contractors, with the purchase of the two GP heads. According to Corsi, this initiative is part of an effort to support their logging contractors in making the move to new equipment and encourage innovation. “We wanted to help the

transition and communicate what the equipment is all about—not simply do a one-day demo, but have it working in the bush,” explained Corsi.

“We’ve been bringing as many guys as we can that work for us to see the machine, to show its capabilities and what kind of niche it can fit. It is a different attachment, but we believe we know enough about it to see that is has a place in the woods in B.C. .”

With Tolko’s encouragement—and support—the GP has worked in two contractor operations. “We went to them, asked them to put a man in the seat, and worked with them on it, and helped reduce their cost exposure,” said Corsi.

Great Feedback

Feedback from the operators has been positive. Within an hour, they’ve figured things out, and are seeing how the head can work well. Processor operators seem to make the transition easier than loader operators, but that really depends on the operator.

One of the contractors, Main Logging, really liked the GP heads and has since purchased one, which is mounted on a Tigercat 880.

contractors,” explained Corsi. “Tolko is not in the business of owning equipment. We just want to make sure that innovation happens.”

He adds that with the cost of new-to-theindustry equipment, contractors won’t take the risk if they can’t completely see the benefits.

“What we’ve done is taken some risk, to push the innovation side of it—Tolko has some skin in the game, to help contractors learn about new equipment.”

Application

In terms of applications in B.C., Tolko sees the GP head as a multi-purpose attachment for processing, loading, and hoe chucking.

“The GP is really a bit of a hybrid,” he explains. “It’s not the equivalent of a big loader, or the equivalent of a big processor. It does a lot of things really well. It does not do one thing really excellent—but that’s not the way it was designed.”

It was, Corsi says, designed for niches.

“The niches we’ve identified are small volume applications. Today, someone might send a processor and a loader to an area. But the GP is one head that can do both those tasks. You can cut down on the number of

ContractorProfile machines, the moving costs, and the number of operators. You can have one person, one machine, doing the job.” It could also be used as a very versatile tool in general operations for a large contractor, he added.

What’s coming up for Tolko and its contractors is a good reason the GP head is an especially good fit.

“The number one reason why we went after it is we have a big steep slope initiative—and we’re talking about towers and grapple yarders in these settings.” A contractor could be in an area where they are doing just three to four truckloads a day, and it’s difficult to justify a large number of pieces of equipment in this kind of volume.

“This one piece of equipment fits really well into those small volume applications— that’s probably its best niche,” says Corsi.

Perhaps its biggest limitation is the size of carrier needed to support the head, which weighs in at 6,000 pounds. “To use it in a loading application, you need a little bigger carrier, to unload the trailers. And if you are unloading quad trailers, the loads can be very heavy.” So the counterweight and reach are important. Pierce recommends a minimum 85,000 pound carrier.

At the end of the day, Tolko sees that by helping contractors keep up with technology, they are also helping Tolko remain efficient and keep up with technology. “We’re really

working for a win-win,” says Corsi.

While he promotes the GP head, Corsi is continuing the hunt for what might be next for new technology in logging. “I’m looking every day for the big game changer for the industry,” he says.

“The forest industry and Tolko will be facing some challenges, whether it is a shortage of skilled labor or going to more difficult terrain, and we know we need to pursue innovation to meet those challenges.”

U.S. Operations

As part of their due diligence, Tolko toured four different logging operations in Washington and Oregon that use the head, and the contractors they talked with said it has done more than they anticipated—one contractor is now on his second GP head.

“The loader or processing functions are not one to one compared to a dedicated loader or processor, but you’re not comparing apples to apples. It’s done better than expected; they thought it might perform at 50 percent production rates, and it’s more like 75 to 80 percent.”

Servicing and Carrier Size

The serviceability of the GP is also a selling point, says Corsi. It’s made up of standard components, with lots of access panels, and it has a DASA computer system. “If anyone is used to working on standard heads, they can pick up and learn on the GP head pretty quick.”

Tolko found the GP head a great fit for small volume applications.

FRA Working to Lift H-2B Guestworker Processing Suspension

The Forest Resources Assoc-iation expressed its frustration over the Department of Labor’s (DOL) arbitrary decision to stop issuing guestworker visas.

“Guestworkers from Central America and Mexico are absolutely critical to the practice of sustainable forestry in this country,” said FRA President Deb Hawkinson. “Because the work is seasonal and tree-planting crews

move throughout wide regions, U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents are just not interested in this work. Legal, fully vetted guestworkers have performed it for many decades, under authorization of the H-2B visa program.”

FRA has been leading advocacy efforts on behalf of the forestry sector to persuade DOL to change course. “We are absolutely at a loss to understand why DOL would take such an economy-disrupting step,” Hawkinson said.

FRA has taken its concerns to Capitol Hill, where numerous members of Congress from both parties and in both chambers have already communicated their opposition to DOL’s guestworker visa stoppage. Group letters are now circulating in both chambers urging the department to change course and to support the Department of Homeland Security, which actually has the authority to regulate the H-2B program.

OSHA Changes Reporting Requirements

The Idaho Logger reported that as of 2015 “employers are required to report to OSHA more types of workplace injuries, and employers should expect an increase in enforcement inspections.

The new changes are as follows: Under the new reporting rules, employers will now be required to report within 24 hours: • Any work-related inpatient hospitalization—even for just one employee, as opposed to the current 3-employee hospitalization rule • Any work-related amputation • Any work-related loss of any eye All work-related fatalities must continue to be reported within 8 hours.

Forest Service and BLM 2016 Budgets

The American Forest Resource Council (AFRC) reported in February that under Obama’s Fiscal Year 2016 budget the Forest Service would receive $1.94 billion, down from $5.07 billion in 2015, and 48 percent would be dedicated to wildfire suppression activities.

It also proposes to increase timber sale outputs from the current 2.9 bbf up to 3.2 bbf, although it’s unclear how that would be accomplished.

The new budget relies on Congress passing the Wildfire Disaster Funding Act (WDFA), which will trigger the use of emergency firefighting dollars for the largest wildfires. The budget assumes $173 million in increased funding if these emergency funds were made available.

Teaching Teachers Sustainable Forestry Tour Opens Teachers’ Eyes

iterally hundreds of products

besides lumber come from trees…like chewing gum, rayon, and nail polish, to name three. Who knew? And sawmills use lots of technology and computers to cut lumber. Again, who knew?

As 42 professional educators hit the road to tour tree farms, sawmills, and logging sites, the Idaho Forest Products Commission (IFPC) was looking for those “aha moments,” just as teachers do in their classrooms. It’s the familiar “I didn’t know that” comment indicating that learning has taken place.

For tour sponsors and IFPC, the nearly week-long tour is sometimes the equivalent of teaching a foreign language. So much about the forest industry is just plain foreign, especially to those who live in cities far removed from forests.

“I was no great advocate or detractor of logging when I came on the tour,” said Jared Dotson, a career counselor at Sand Creek Middle School in Idaho Falls. “I just enjoy the outdoors and could easily picture clearcuts as part of logging, but I was willing to find out more. I became extra impressed with every aspect of the industry. From paper mills, to trucking, to those in the woods, everyone seemed aware of their roles, and they were engaged in them. I certainly didn’t have that mindset when I came into the tour. I always thought that the logger just wants to cut trees, although I never thought about it in a negative way. After the tour, I see loggers more as foresters and this is their industry.”

Finding a Family Connection

Both Margaret Castle and Emily Hoadley claimed logging in their family backgrounds, but neither of the seasoned teachers had ever given much thought beyond the nostalgia and history of the forest industry.

And although Hoadley’s husband’s family has logged around Sandpoint for years, the tour made her much more aware of the many products that come from trees and how little people relate to their wood consumption.

“My first impression was that logging is pretty much dying, but I found it is still a thriving industry,” said Hoadley, who teaches 11th and 12th grade advanced placement environmental science at Centennial High School in the Meridian School District near Boise. “Sustainability is a big issue for me, and I wasn’t sure where the industry was on that. I was impressed that it’s their thing too, and it doesn’t have to be an either-or situation. I wish farming was more that way, instead of being pretty much business driven.

In the logging industry, they get it. As far as the connection with resource use, people are still consuming and products have to come from somewhere. There’s all the talk about reduce and recycle, but we still need products. This industry has the environmental restrictions to keep things sustainable.”

Understanding the Value of Logging

For Margaret Castle, currently a fourth grade teacher at Shadow Butte Elementary School in Emmett, Idaho, the tour offered more insight into logging practices. “You always hear about clearcuts being controversial, but we learned that sometimes they can be a healthy practice. It was also interesting to understand why some forests are not totally cleaned up and why dead stands are left. We learned about the regulations behind some of those situations, and how the Forest Service might have to manage differently than state trust fund lands. The federal lands have to cater to all parties instead of to just a few.”

Castle was especially impressed with the civility on the tour, with no obvious biases being expressed by participants. “I kept hearing what people were learning. They were there to learn and there was no debating. We

were there to share different viewpoints, and we heard all kinds of different viewpoints.

The panelists were very respectful of each other and their opinions and jobs.”

The Wow Factor

For Rochelle Chatburn, the whole tour was just plain eye opening. The third grade teacher from Southside Elementary School in Cocalalla was one of few teachers attending from the northern, more forested part of Idaho, yet the 17-year classroom veteran had never been exposed to the Project Learning Tree curriculum or its content. “The tour was amazing, and what we learned fits so well with what I can use in the classroom. It is so useful to my profession.”

Chatburn’s classroom participates in raising trout and studying streams, so she found the riparian management information especially useful. “We are all about keeping our streams clean, and what we learned shows that they are protecting our streams. That kind of learning is so exciting.” Touring a 20acre recently logged forest patch, Chatburn added, “I wish I’d known then what I know now, that we can be real stewards. This is both professional and personal to me.”

Tech in the Woods

Perhaps the biggest area of surprise for tour participants was the widespread use of technology both in the woods and in the milling processes. “My favorite stop was at the mill at Chilco and seeing the technology,” said Chatburn. “Things were completely automated, and the X-ray technology was so amazing. I love that they don’t waste anything. They use the whole log.”

For Castle, the mechanical harvester was front and center. “I could have watched that harvester all day,” she said, noting that she’d ridden with her dad in his days of log hauling and knew something of the practices and equipment of earlier eras. “The fact that it’s one machine and one guy shows how much the technology has changed.” (continued on page 32

Careers in the Woods

The potential jobs in the timber industry drew more than a few comments, and as a career counselor, Jared Dotson took away valuable information about future careers.

He found that with the current workers now approaching retirement, there is a need for more men and women to enter the forest industry professions.

“There are so many aspects to this industry, from IT work in paper mills to the whole process of cutting trees. For those not wanting to go through four years of college or sit at a desk job, there are lots of careers out there that pay well and require skill.”

“This is a once in a lifetime experience for educators,” said Michelle Youngquist, IFPC Education Coordinator and director of the tour. “There really is nothing like seeing the entire forest cycle and meeting the real people who make it happen. Through a variety of activities, materials, and aids, educators learned how to take their experience back to the classroom and their students.”

Hood shimmers in the crisp morning light. “You got to look down the road,” he says. “You must change with the times. You owe it to your family, to your employees and to the land.”

Waylon, along with his wife Tiffany, own Chilkat Logging, Inc. Together they started the business in 2006 and two years ago purchased Chilkat Enterprise, from Waylon’s

mother Pinky after the death of his father, Kelly Lee Beymer.

Tribal Logging

Today, the Beymer’s operate both companies on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation in north central Oregon. The reservation, created by treaty in 1855, is a sovereign nation occupied and governed by the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs.

It covers over 1,000 square miles, of which 350,000 acres are forested.

A 1998 Freightliner is used as a water tanker and fifth wheel. A 1987 Kenworth long nose is a dedicated water truck. “I like the Western Star trucks because they’re built heavier. They’re tougher and we don’t have to

work on them much,” Waylon says.

Chilkat also contracts with Jeese Reese Trucking, Inc. of Warm Springs, full time for all of its log hauling needs. “Jesse works with us fighting fires too,” Waylon says. All Chilkat employees are trained to fight fires and the entire crew has red cards.

We rest, re-group and tend to our equipment. It’s like springcleaning. Then we hit it hard come May.” “Another challenge to logging on the Reservation,” he says, “is that there’s 12 different species of trees, which have about 15-40 growth rings per inch.”

In conjunction with the logging and trucking operations, Chilkat is involved in excavation and construction, including housing starts and driveways. “We have a C.C.B. license, so we can do work outside the reservation in Jefferson and Wasco counties. We’ll do waterlines, foundations …everything but build the house,” he added.

“I’ve always tried to be versatile. We can do a driveway, do a roadway, do logging and fight fires. I try to keep work in front of the guys, and they eat it up.”

Running a variety of sides means keeping a lot of machines on the job.

On the logging side, Chilkat fields three shovels, a 2002 and 2006 Lin-Belt 210 along with a 2005 Link-Belt 240. “We prefer the Link-Belt shovels because they’re easy to operate and good on fuel. I feel they hold together better and we can work on them ourselves,” Waylon says.

In addition, two skidders, a 2006 Prentice 490 and a 2004 John Deere 648, join the team along side a 2006 Log Max Processor and 2011 Caterpillar 324 delimber. A 2008 Tigercat 822 hot saw, operated by side rod Dwayne Cowen, handles the cutting. On occasion, hand crews are also contracted.

A 2014 Slashbuster on a 2006 Link-Belt 210 excavator and a 1997 CAT 320 see duty on hazardous fuel removal and brush piling contracts.

Chilkat does their own maintenance except for engine rebuilds and hydraulic work. “We work with Wolfe Truck & Equipment out of Madras, Ore. If there’s a problem we can’t solve, they’re right on it,” Waylon says.

The Crew: Building Relationships

Chilkat Logging has a fulltime crew of sixteen, including seven Tribal members.

During the peak production months, the

company adds a few more hands to a max of 20. Most of the crew has been with Chilkat for several years. “We do a lot to protect our crew,” Tiffany Beymer says. “Without them, we’re not here.”

“Finding the right people is sometimes a little bit tough. We try to build relationships so we can keep guys around for longer. It’s one of the major rewards of doing this job,” Waylon says, agreeing with his wife. “We look for people with good values. You can teach someone to operate the equipment, but you can’t teach someone to be a good person. It matters to them to take care of their family, tell the truth, take care of their house, be at work on time, and to keep their word. I want to know the guy I’m working with. I want them around for a long time.”

Like many logging companies, Chilkat finds filling temporary/seasonal positions a bit difficult. It’s not unusual to have several applications from people living in other states. “We seem to fill those positions, but I still try to keep the good ones around,” Waylon says.

In addition to paying a good family wage and benefits, Chilkat Logging puts extra emphasis on safety training. In fact, Chilkat’s safety commitment extends to rewarding employees by kicking back the annual SAIF premium rebate. “Our employees are the reason we get a high safety rating,” Tiffany says. “That’s why we get the rebate.”

“The main key to our success are our employees,” Waylon adds. “Without your employees, you’re nothing. But, like my dad said, do what you’re good at and have a stable marriage, don’t lie to your banker and pay your taxes. Good advice.”

ith a big smile on her face,

Conference Manager Rikki Wellman said the 2015 Oregon Logging Conference far exceeded everyone’s expectations.

“It was the largest show since 2008,” says Wellman. “The attendance was up, classes were well attended, and we had positive comments from exhibitors and those that attended.”

Fundraising events had a great showing too. “The Desserts for Dreams event brought in $10,621, which will be donated to the Play Smart Youth Heart Screening Program, a charity selected by first lady Judy Nygaard,” says Wellman. “This is the 12th year for the Desserts for Dreams event to be held in conjunction with the annual OLC.”

Redwood Logging Conference

orthern California’s logging industry was in the spot-

light at the 77th Annual Redwood Region Logging Conference, held March 19 -21, 2015 in Eureka, Calf.

Equipment displays included modern logging machinery such as excavators and logging trucks, as well as working historic steam donkeys and a small locomotive.

Thousands of visitors got up close and personal with live wildlife, watched competitive logging sports, viewed a log loading competition, and talked with vendors who provide materials and supplies to the logging industry. Attendees could also watch portable sawmill production and chainsaw carving.

Education is a key focus of the Conference, with more than 1600 elementary school children getting a personalized tour of the many activities, and the opportunity to meet and talk to industry representatives. Classes from both Humboldt and Mendocino Counties participated in the mural contest creating works of art to portray the theme of the Conference, and more than 160 high school

In addition, nine scholarships with a value of $12,500 were awarded to college students.

The keynote speaker at the March 20th breakfast was Sierra Pacific Industries Vice President Dan Tomascheski. He expressed his optimism for the future of the timber industry and emphasized the importance of education. “It’s important to be involved in kids’ lives,” he said. “Without education, especially in rural areas, we will not have much of a chance,” he added.

He also cautioned about the fire danger, which continues to grow as California’s drought continues. He commented, however, that fires in previous years and the potential for another bad fire season have moved some

of the extreme environmentalists closer to the middle.

Three Humboldt County equipment operators took top honors in the log loading competition, utilizing a John Deer 2954 D loader. Aaron Kane, who works for Chambers Logging, captured first place with a time of 3 minutes 20 seconds, while second and third place went to Green Diamond Resource Company employees Brian Chips and Brett Watson, respectively.

The Loggers Banquet was well attended with more than 600 people gathering to celebrate the Conference, and the 2015 Achievement Award winner. The award was presented to Bud Newton, who owns and operates Three Star Logging in Crescent City. The Conference raised more than $100,000 at the Banquet’s auction and raffle.

All proceeds will be spent on educational project.

Always in Motion: How Good Family Business Planning Can Save Your Business

“Timmmmmmmmbbbberrrrr!”

Jim hears the familiar warning cry among the sounds of the busy chain saws and the staccato chop-chop-chopping as he bounces in his faithful jeep along the same dusty roads driven by his father and grandfather.

Driving through the magnificent forest that has belonged to his family for the better part of a century, he gazes up at the brilliant azure sky as he counts his considerable blessings. It has been five years ago this spring since his dad had figuratively cried, “Timber!”

Jim remembers the somber look on his father’s face as he told his family he had just received a disturbing medical diagnosis. Tom was only 65 and had always been the strong leader of both the family and the business since taking over from Jim’s grandfather 30 years previously. His dad had begun the meeting by saying he was afraid he was going down, felled like a giant oak in the prime of his life. Jim remembers looking around the room at his mother, brother, and sister realizing no one knew what to do next.

Fortunately, Jim’s mother suggested he take a family business course at the local university. A huge Star Wars fan, Jim thought his professor, Dr. Hamilton, looked like Yoda because he had the same soft kind eyes, wise smile, calming presence, and inner happiness. Dr. Hamilton understood what it took to smoothly survive generational transitions not only in the business, but also in the family. In addition, Dr. Hamilton had great interest in the latest research in neuroscience.

The teacher enthusiastically shared the most recent breakthroughs thanks to functional Magnetic Resonance Imagery and Positron Emission Topography. “We can actually see how the brain reacts to threats,” he excitedly explained to his students.

Based on the research by Dr. David Rock at the NeuroLeadership Institute, Dr. Hamilton explained the threats family members perceive at times of generational transitions. Rock calls these threats Status, Certainty, Autonomy, Relationships, and Fairness. Dr. Hamilton said whenever a 58

member of the senior generation considers leaving an important leadership position, his or her status is threatened, especially if being the leader is a big part of identity. This is exacerbated when adult children get frustrated and speak in a condescending tone of voice making the parents feel like they are losing their status not only in the business but also in the family. Dr. Hamilton added that an important lesson from long-lasting family businesses is to have regular family meetings. One of the purposes is to learn together how to communicate more effectively. Learning to treat each other with dignity and respect goes a long way toward removing threats to status.

The brain craves certainty, and when family leadership is in transition, uncertainty causes great distress. That’s why Dr. Hamilton recommended continuity planning complete with timelines, roles, and responsibilities. Because our brains yearn for autonomy, humans hate being told what to do, especially when it involves making changes. The professor emphasized using family meetings as a place to talk about strong core values and a realistic vision for the future because they can serve as anchors during necessary transitional changes.

Family meetings can also help strengthen relationships and ensure that no one feels left out. Dr. Hamilton cited Rock’s research suggesting that when we feel ignored, our brains react as if we’ve “put our hand on a hot plate.” Finally, Dr. Hamilton discussed the concept of fairness. Human beings can put up with almost any decision if they believe a fair process is being used. The professor urged family business owners to create a family constitution complete with a code of conduct and a family employment policy so family owners’ brains perceive there is a level playing field.

By the end of the semester, Jim had instituted monthly family meetings and gotten his father, mother, brother, and sister involved in discussing their family values, creating a vision for both the family and the business, and writing a family constitution. In addition, his family had begun

Most importantly, they worked diligently on their communication skills, taking care to speak to each other respectfully. Now, five years later, family meetings are held monthly, and his family has agreed that Jim should be his father’s successor.

On this cool March morning, Jim heard “Timber!” shouted again from another part of the forest. He was grateful his father’s warning five years ago had not marked the end but the beginning of his family’s journey together toward the continuation of his grandfather’s successful timber business. He was proud his father had taken his doctor’s advice and had regained his health. His dad will be retiring tomorrow after a grand celebration with family, employees, and friends tonight. The business is thriving, and family members are happy. Jim smiles serenely as he remembers one of his favorite Star War quotes from Yoda: “Always in motion is the future.”
