Long-Term Health Concerns from Exposure to Wildfire Smoke

With huge wildfires, like the 2018 fire in Paradise, California, and the fires currently raging in Australia, experts are now concerned about the health effects of exposure to wildfire smoke.

The Statesman Journal reported that the proliferation of construction materials and household items made from petroleumbased plastics, ranging from plumbing pipes to exterior siding, add additional dangers.

These items burn hotter and generate smoke more toxic than wood creates, exposing people to numerous health hazards.

An estimated 20,000 premature deaths occur annually in the U.S. due to chronic wildfire smoke exposure. That number is expected to double by the end of the century, according to scientists funded by NASA.

Colorado Forest Restoration Project Could Bolster Timber Industry

The Durago Herald reported that a new project to improve the health of 750,000 acres of forest in Southwest Colorado could open new opportunities for the timber industry to harvest more wood and use it in nontraditional ways.

The Rocky Mountain Restoration Initiative recently received $50 million in funding to help mitigate wildfire risk and improve the health of the ecosystem through prescribed burning, forest thinning, logging, and other strategies, said Reid Armstrong, communications project manager for the initiative.

The initiative, a collaboration of 30 organizations, is expected to work across public, state, and private land over 10 years to improve the resiliency of forests along the U.S. Highway 160 corridor east and west of Durango.

Researchers Find Some Forests Crucial for Climate Change Mitigation, Biodiversity

A study by Oregon State University (OSU) researchers has identified forests in the western United States that should be preserved for their potential to mitigate climate change through carbon sequestration, as well as to enhance biodiversity.

Those forests are mainly along the Pacific Coast and in the Cascade Range, with pockets of them in the northern Rocky Mountains as well. Not logging those forests would be the carbon dioxide equivalent of halting eight years’ worth of fossil fuel burning in the western lower 48, the scientists found, noting that making land stewardship a higher societal priority is crucial for 4

altering climate change trajectory.

“The greater frequency and intensity of extreme events such as wildfires have adversely affected terrestrial ecosystems,” said study co-author Beverly Law, professor of forest ecosystems and society in the OSU College of Forestry. “Although climate change is impacting forests in many regions, other regions are expected to have low vulnerability to fires, insects, and drought in the future.”

Law, OSU forestry professor William Ripple, postdoctoral research associate Polly Buotte, and Logan Berner of EcoSpatial Services analyzed forests in the western United States to simulate potential carbon sequestration through the 21st century. Supported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture, the five-year study identified, and targeted for preservation, forests with high carbon sequestration potential; low vulnerability to drought, fire, and beetles; and high biodiversity value.

Marbled Murrelet Lawsuits

The Washington State City of Forks and two Clallam County junior taxing districts have joined a lawsuit that challenges newly adopted state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) forest management plans.

The three new plaintiffs join seven others named in a Jan. 2 lawsuit filed against DNR. The 38-page complaint alleges that DNR breached its fiduciary duty and violated the state Environmental Policy Act when it removed millions of board feet of timber from the 2015-2024 sustainable harvest calculation and adopted a long-term conservation strategy for the marbled murrelet.

Housing Market Expected to Heat up in Three Washington State Counties

According to Northwest Multiple Listing Service, the number of homes on the market has dropped dramatically in various counties of Washington State: 54 percent in Thurston County, 41.4 percent in King County, and 40 percent in Pierce County.

Homes in those markets are expected to sell faster and at higher prices.

Windermere agent Nick Dahl said the crunch has triggered a heightened interest in new construction, like Gig Harbor’s Cushman Pointe development, which features 51 lots.

Come spring and summer, the hot market will likely mean an uptick in bidding wars.

Redfin, the Seattle-based real estate brokerage site, expects about 25 percent of offers to face bidding wars in 2020 compared to only 10 percent last year.

President’s Message elcome to the 2020 Oregon

Logging Conference. As this year’s president, I invite you to attend our annual gathering that will begin February 19 and continue through February 22, 2020.

Our theme this year is Working Forests: Carbon Keepers, and it was selected specifically to highlight that our industry, the products we produce, and the forests that we manage are some of the best carbon keepers (sequesters) in the world. Working forests provide diverse habitats through our varied management practices and provide the raw materials to supply an industry that provides jobs for working families. After more than two decades of letting millions of acres of our forests go unmanaged, we know the results: thousands of lost jobs, ruined communities, towns and cities besieged by unhealthy air, and millions of tons of carbon being released from wildfires. Our industry is the key to healthy, working forests, and people, like yourselves, are the key to our industry.

This year, as always, we will have a traditional full equipment show with the newest technology in logging, construction, trucking, heavy equipment, and biomass processing. You will have an opportunity to visit with equipment dealers and manufacturers to learn about the latest technology in equipment, and you will also attend valuable panels and seminar sessions where you can earn Professional Logger credits — all in one location.

Our conference this year begins on Wednesday, February 19, 2020, with the OLC Meet and Greet (and registration), starting at 4:30 p.m. at the Graduate Eugene (formerly the Hilton Eugene). This is followed by the Oregon Women in Timber annual dinner and auction.

Education and attracting a new-generation workforce to our industry is the focus of the hands-on opportunities at the 3rd Annual Future Forestry Workers Career Day. We are expecting over 750 high school students to attend and become acquainted with our industry and some of the many jobs associated with it. Students talk oneon-one with industry professionals to learn about career opportunities, with or without a

college education. With assistance from partners should be Oregon Logging Conference Foundation and Oregon Women in Timber, we are excited to continue this program.

For students acquiring the necessary skills to work in our industry, each year the Oregon Logging Conference Foundation (OLCF) awards a number of scholarships to those enrolled in a college or university program or a trade program such as welding or diesel mechanics. After breakfast on both Thursday and Friday mornings, we will hold auctions that benefit the Foundation, and I want to thank you for your participation and generous support, which go a long way toward meeting our targets. Speaking of targets, I’d like to say Thank You to Jeanne Shuttleworth, her team, and the many sponsors, for putting on the “Shooting for Scholarships” clay target shoot fundraiser.

This event raised $24,000 for the Foundation to be awarded this year. OLCF is a 501(c)3 organization, and all charitable donations are tax deductible.

(formerly Hilton Eugene) There’s a new name and a new look for the Oregon Logging Conference host hotel.

The Graduate Eugene is the new name of the hotel formerly known as Hilton Eugene, and you’ll notice the changes the moment you drive up to the front of the hotel. The outside has been painted, and the entrance has been renovated.

The title of keynote speaker Dr. Patrick Moore’s address to the Oregon Logging Conference (OLC) is Fake Invisible Catastrophes and Threats of Doom. The speech is based on an essay written by Dr. Moore. His essay mentions 12 of what he

calls fake invisible catastrophes and threats of doom. During his keynote speech at the OLC, he will address some of those.

“Trees are involved, but the central theme is about how we are being duped into so many supposed ‘crises’ that cannot be verified by the average person because they are invisible, like CO2, or so remote, like polar bears, that activists with no scruples can make up just about any story and make headlines around the world,” Dr. Moore said.

The 12 crises that he lists are: coral reefs around the world are dying; climate catastrophe is inevitable due to an increase in atmospheric CO2, if we don’t end the use of fossil fuels; pesticide residues in our food causes cancer, birth defects, autism, and brain damage; Africa’s oldest baobab trees are dying at an unprecedented rate and climate change may be to blame; GMOs will harm

Patrick Moore us and damage the environment; farmed salmon are full of poisons and they are destroying the wild salmon; nuclear energy is too dangerous and radiation will kill you; there is a sea of plastic twice the size of Texas in the North Pacific Gyre north of Hawaii; there are a possible 3,000,000 undersea volcanoes doing something unobserved; ocean acidification will kill all the coral reefs and shellfish in the world; and climate change is killing the cedars of Lebanon.

Dr. Moore’s conclusion wonders if it is just a coincidence that 12 of the most publicized alleged environmental catastrophes and threats of doom happen to be invisible or very remote — or both. Then he asks if it is just easier to create a fake narrative when the public can’t check it out for themselves.

During his keynote speech, Dr. Moore will also talk about forestry and how it is now practiced in North America, Europe, Japan, and many, other countries makes it the most sustainable of all industries that provide energy and materials for our civilization.

2020 OLC President Greg Stratton selected Dr. Moore as keynote speaker and said, “I have always wanted to understand ‘the other side’ and Patrick has been on the other side. He is knowledgeable in the facts and real science of our environment,” Stratton continued, “unlike much of the current ‘best available’ information, which is more often than not, politically or agenda driven.”

Dr. Moore is a founding member, former president, and international director for Greenpeace.

Oregon Department of Forestry Participates at the Oregon Logging Conference

In addition to participating in several activities at the Oregon Logging Conference, the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) will have an outdoor display booth staffed with representatives sharing valuable information about Oregon forests.

Look for the white yurt in front of the Wheeler Pavilion, and you will find the ODF display booth with their staff ready to answer questions about fire prevention and suppression requirements, forest health, landowner assistance, state forests, and forest practices, including stream protection standards, road drainage, and reforestation.

Six ODF representatives will give

presentations as part of the Oregon Forest Practices seminar, and Mike Cafferata, ODF District Forester at Forest Grove, will be the featured speaker at a seminar on Effective Communications. Both seminars will take place Friday, February 21. (See Schedule at a Glance for more details.)

Also on Friday, ODF Eastern Lane District personnel will assist with the High School Skills event, taking place in conjunction with the Future Forestry Workers Career Day. On Saturday, with assistance from ODF, Smokey the Bear will participate in Family Day at the Oregon Logging Conference. Fire prevention will be one focus

of Family Day, and ODF personnel will be on hand to discuss the Fuels Reduction Program as it pertains to rural homes.

A little bit of history: House Bill 50, passed by the Oregon legislature in 1911, established the State Board of Forestry and the office of the State Forester and Deputy State Forester. Today, almost 110 years later, the forests of Oregon remain the focus of a vigorous public dialogue, and ODF is engaged to address both old and new issues.

At the Oregon Logging Conference, ODF looks forward to sharing ideas with timber professionals and sharing information with members of the public.

Professional Logger Credits Can Be Earned at the Oregon Logging Conference One of many reasons to attend the Oregon Logging Conference (OLC) and go to the interesting seminars and panel discussions is to earn Professional Logger credits.

We all know that the logging industry depends on a workforce that is not only highly skilled but also up to date on current rules, regulations, and techniques.

Again this year, OLC will offer all registered attendees the opportunity to earn Professional Logger credits. Individuals and company representatives can learn about a variety of topics presented by industry professionals and earn five, 10, or MORE credits.

TIP: Here’s how to earn the Maximum Credits, turn to page 42-43 of this show guide and see the seminars and workshops being offered this year, then choose the combination that earns the most credits. With a little planning, the OLC can provide many, if not all, of the credits needed to ensure that everyone in the industry is the best they can be.

Here’s one way to get the most credits: If a company sends two representatives to separate seminars and workshops on both Thursday and Friday, a total of 15 Professional Logger credits could be earned, which includes the two credits awarded for registering and attending the OLC. All credits earned are applicable toward

The Certified Foresters Program is offered through the Society of American Foresters (SAF) and provides a consistent, national credential for a professional forester.

By attending the OLC and some of the seminars and panel discussions offered, up to 12 SAF continuing education credits can be earned.

Future Forestry Workers Career Day The Third Annual Future Forestry Workers Career Day being held February 21st is one essential piece in the continuing efforts to recruit the next generation workforce in the logging and forestry business.

Students will be able to talk to resource professionals and take part in hands-on activities as they learn about current career opportunities in the logging, forestry, and other natural resource industries. As many as 900 high school students from Oregon and Washington are expected to participate.

This event takes place in the Livestock Arena on the Lane County Fairgrounds, during the Oregon Logging Conference.

It is sponsored by the Oregon Logging Conference Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to educational outreach.

Something new this year is that there will be only one session of student participation from 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. A presentation will be made to the participating students, followed by a half day of hands-on activities and information gathering. Students will also be treated to a pizza-by-the-slice lunch as part of the event.

Several topics will be discussed at different stations set up and informative exhibits will also be on display. Topics include forestry and reforestation, sawmill and forest production, logging and trucking, diesel mechanics and welding, heavy equipment operations, and wildland firefighting.

“This will be a half day of hands-on activities and exhibits highlighting career opportunities that await ambitious and interested young men and women,” said Rikki Wellman, executive director of the Oregon Logging Conference. “Students will also be able to talk one-on-one to industry professionals about jobs currently available in our industry,” she added.

Rick Kriege, Career Day chairman and 2018 OLC president, said he is pleased with the positive effect this event has had 26

on educating young people. “In 2018 when we held our first event, we were extremely pleased with the interest and turnout. Now going into our third year,” he added, “we are seeing the same interest from young adults looking for possible careers in our industry.”

Activities in previous years included operating a small excavator and learning how to plant a tree seedling.

There is also an opportunity to get up close to state-of-the-art and technologically advanced logging, forestry, trucking, and construction equipment. Both self-guided and guided tours are available of the equipment and products on display, both inside and outside at the fairgrounds, in conjunction with the Oregon Logging Conference.

High School Forestry and Logging Skills Competition

Students who attend the Future Forestry Workers Career Day will also get to observe a forestry and logging skills demonstration and competition put on by students from high school natural resource clubs. These young men and women will demonstrate industry skills, including cable splicing, choker setting, crosscut and single buck sawing, compass and pacing, tool identification,

log scaling, log rolling, and ax throwing. This competition is sponsored

by Warrenton FiberNygaard Logging.

High School Forestry Skills Competition Chair Jeff Plickat said, “This event was incorporated into the Future Forestry Workers Career Day so that all students could watch peers practicing their hands-on skills. Since we’ve focused our efforts on building this program,” he added, “it has only continued to grow and expose more kids to the industry.”

He said the high school forestry and logging skills competition has been much smaller in previous years, but this year there will be 30 to 40 students from all over the state competing for trophies.

As efforts continue to attract the next generation workforce to the logging industry, this Career Day event has reached nearly 1,200 high school students. One educator attending the event in 2019 said, “Instructors of schools that have natural resource and CTE (Career Technical Education) programs very much appreciate the Oregon Logging Conference Foundation and the Oregon Logging Conference for making this event happen.”

Dave is the Operations Manager for the Pacific Rim Scaling Bureau in Lacey, Washington. He is also active in the NW Log Rules Group, Scaling Practices, and the Timber Measurement Society.

He has performed checked scaling and operational duties in six western states and Canada and is certified in Eastside, Westside, and Cubic scale. Dave began his career in the 1980s with the Oregon Log Scaling Bureau.

Kristina McNitt, Oregon Forest & Industries Council

Kristina was named President in 2012, she brings more than 25 years of legislative experience to OFIC. During her career, she has advocated for water, agricultural and timber issues before the Oregon state legislature, and continues to advocate on behalf of OFIC’s members to promote stewardship and sustainable management on all of Oregon’s forestlands. McNitt graduated from the University of Oregon with a B.S. in Economics and was the principal of a small contract lobby firm prior to coming to OFIC.

Travis Joseph, American Forest Resource Council

Travis was born and raised in Springfield, Oregon and spent eight years in Washington D.C. working for the U.S. House of Representatives.

He was a senior legislative aide to an Oregon congressman, a senior policy advisor on the House Natural Resources Committee, and the Director of Northwest Policy for the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. Travis returned to Oregon to pursue his passion for healthy public forest-lands and creating economic opportunities in rural communities. At American Forest Resources, Travis manages the budget, staff, communications, government relations, and overall strategy of the Association. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in history and international studies from the University of Oregon and a Master’s degree in environment and development from the London School of Economics and Political Science in environment and development.

Nick Smith, Healthy Forests, Healthy Communities

Nick founded Healthy Forests, Healthy Communities in 2013. As a member of multi-generation farming family, he has a passion for natural resources and rural communities. Nick has a background in public policy and communications, having worked in the Oregon Legislature in various capacities and having served several members of leadership in the House of Representatives. Link Smith, ODF Unit Forester

Link has worked for ODF since 1991 and currently oversees a district that provides fire protection on 755,000 acres of private, BLM, and state-owned lands in Lane County. Over the years, he has worked in a variety of ODF positions in southwest Oregon, west Oregon, and the western Lane districts. Link is also the Incident Commander on one of ODF’s three Incident Management Teams.

Oregon Loggers Recognized as 2019 Operators of the Year Three loggers representing the southwest, northwest, and eastern areas of Oregon have been selected as 2019 Operators of the Year by the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF). In addition, a Merit Award was given to C & C Logging, of Kelso, Washington. Those being honored are: • Alex Davis, Pacific Forest Contractors Inc., of Eagle Creek, Oregon (Southwest) • Steve Jackson, Steve Jackson Logging of Ridgefield, Washington (Eastern) • Jim Gahlsdorf, Gahlsdorf Logging Inc. of Rickreall, Oregon (Northwest) • Frank Chandler Jr., C & C Logging, Kelso, Washington (Merit Award)

These logging companies will be recognized as Operators of the Year at the Oregon Logging Conference on Thursday, February 20 at 1:15 p.m., and by the Oregon Board of Forestry at its March 4 meeting in Salem. They have also been recognized by Associated Oregon Loggers.

Operator of the Year awards are given to recognize those who, while harvesting timber or doing other forestry work, protect natural resources at a level that goes above and beyond requirements of the Oregon Forest Practices Act. This law requires people to harvest responsibly and protect streams and water quality, protect and enhance habitat, and reduce

landslide risks. The law also requires landowners to replant forests after harvesting.

Pacific Forest Contractors was recognized for how it successfully harvested a unit that had been severely damaged by a late winter snowstorm in 2019. Heavy snow bent many of the trees in a hazardous, helterskelter pattern, and there was only a narrow window of time to harvest before summer fire restrictions would have curtailed logging.

Logging crews did an outstanding job of protecting trees bordering a salmon-bearing stream by sending logs aloft through rigging that crossed the stream above the treetops.

Jim Gahlsdorf was selected for a careful harvest along a scenic highway leading to popular hiking trails, in Hood River County. Jackson protected multiple pockets of young trees, jump-starting natural regeneration on the steep slopes. He was able to fell trees near an upper fork of the Hood River without harming trees in the protective buffer, and at the request of the U.S. Forest Service, he also removed hazardous, non-merchantable trees along the roadside to improve public safety. The Operator of the Year award also recognizes Jackson for decades of consistently applying best management practices to safeguard forest resources, even under

challenging circumstances.

Jim Gahlsdorf, owner of Gahlsdorf Logging Inc. earned the Operator of the Year award for taking extra firefighting precautions due to the location of the operations in a steep and remote part of the coast range. Soil disturbance was minimized by using an elaborate rigging system that lifted the logs off the ground and over a high ridge to a yarder landing.

C & C Logging was issued a Merit Award for the firm’s safety consciousness and innovative use of technology, including using a drone to carry line into areas of fallen timber.

Watch as these skilled log loader operators demonstrate their abilities in the Oregon Logging Conference’s 11th Annual Log Loader Competition. This two-day competition determines who is the best at the speed, skill, and efficiency of operating a large hydraulic log loader. It is certainly not as easy as these operators make it look. This is an interesting and popular event at the OLC.

When complete each of the three stacks of three wood blocks must be properly matched with colors and numbers or the operator will be disqualified. Each stack must remain standing for five seconds after the heel boom rack is lowered back to the starting point on the ground. If the stacks do not remain standing for the full five seconds, the operator will be disqualified.

The event starts with nine wood blocks scattered randomly on the ground. Operating a Link-Belt log loader, contestants have seven minutes to stack the blocks, end-to-end, matching numbers or colors, on three predetermined marks on the ground.

2020 Resolutions CITIZEN DRIVEN INITIATIVES THAT WOULD IMPACT FOREST PRACTICES AND POLICY, CIRCUMVENTING SCIENCE AND BEST PRACTICES. A Resolution by The Oregon Logging Conference Opposing citizen driven initiatives that would impact forest practices and policy, circumventing science and best practices.

WHEREAS, Recently submitted citizen ballot initiatives rooted in political agenda would negatively impact years of science based forest practices and related policies WHEREAS, The proposed ballot initiatives are extreme and severely regulatory WHEREAS, Forest policy should not be dictated by a citizen initiative nor a citizen legislature WHEREAS, Oregon’s current forest practices and policies are developed by professionals, based on science, research, best practices and practical, proven application WHEREAS, The Oregon Forest Practices Act began in 1971 and Oregon became the first state to pass a comprehensive law to regulate forest practices and safeguard water, fish and wildlife habitat, soil and air.

The rules of the Oregon Forest Practices Act are continually reviewed and updated to keep pace with the most current scientific research WHEREAS, In response to listings of salmon species under the federal Endangered Species Act, Oregon lawmakers joined with landowners in 1997 to create the Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds. The Oregon Plan will continue to enhance salmon runs, improve water quality and achieve healthy watersheds statewide, through the joint efforts of government, landowners and citizen volunteers. The plan is unique for its emphasis on landowners voluntarily exceeding regulations and for its engagement of communities to restore their watersheds THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that The Oregon Logging Conference is opposed to initiatives that circumvent the years of science and research based forest management policies and processes.

This resolution will be presented by Casey Roscoe, Senior Vice President of Public Relations at Seneca, where she focuses her efforts on communication, politics, advocacy, and community support. Roscoe is part of a four-person executive team sharing Seneca’s

core values and goals of creating pristine productive forests, clear running streams, abundant wildlife, clean air, family-wage jobs, and world class outdoor recreation.

WHEREAS, The economic impact to rural Oregon communities will be disproportionately larger than the contributions currently being made to greenhouse gas emissions in those communities

Roscoe worked for Congressman Bob Smith in Washington D.C, and after he retired, worked in media and marketing positions for the Associated Press, Comcast, WDCW-TV, and the Washington Post. After many years in Washington D.C. Roscoe decided it was time to make good on a promise she made to her grandfather, Aaron Jones, when she pledged to come to work for Seneca and bring her skills with her.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that The Oregon Logging Conference go on record in opposition to any Cap and Trade proposal that makes a minimal impact on the world’s greenhouse gas emissions if doing so increases costs for consumers and businesses and decreases Oregon’s competitiveness within the United States and around the world.

Rosoe says she is ecstatic to be working at Seneca and applying her skilled for the benefit of her family’s business as well as the industry as a whole. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing from Providence College.

CAP AND TRADE SYSTEM TO REDUCE GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS A Resolution by the Oregon Logging Conference Opposing Oregon Legislation Creating a Cap and Trade System to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions.

WHEREAS, The Cap and Trade legislation in the 2019 legislature was successfully killed due to the unified efforts of the timber industry and related natural resource based industries WHEREAS, Oregon Governor Kate Brown, Senate President Peter Courtney and House Speaker Tina Kotek have committed to new Cap and Trade legislation that they are re-naming and re-working WHEREAS, Oregon represents an imperceptible amount of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States and the throughout the world.

WHEREAS, Adoption of a Cap and Trade program in Oregon without a meaningful worldwide commitment to greenhouse gas reduction will fail to produce a measurable impact WHEREAS, An Oregon Cap and Trade program would increase costs for businesses, create winners and losers economically and put Oregon industries at a competitive disadvantage with other states and nations that don’t have a Cap and Trade program WHEREAS, An Oregon Cap and Trade program would result in rising prices on most consumer goods due to the rising cost of energy and fuel

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we must remain unified as a timber industry against Cap and Trade legislation and not allow political interests to divide us.

This resolution will be presented by Representative David Brock Smith.

Oregon State Representative David Brock Smith represents District 1 (Curry County and parts of Coos, Douglas and Josephine Counties) and is a third generation resident of the Port Orford area.

For the 2019 – 2021 legislative session, Rep. Smith is Co-Vice Chair of the Joint Committee on Carbon Reduction, House Committee on Agriculture and Land Use, House Committee on Natural Resources, and Joint Ways and Means Committee on Natural Resources.

Rep. Smith has an extensive public service background, having proudly served the citizens of Port Orford for many years as the City Council President and Chamber of Commerce President/Director. He is also the former Chair and Vice Chair of the Curry County Board of Commissioners, where he served on many boards and committees. He has also served in various roles with the Association of Oregon Counties, and for many years was on the Port Orford-Langlois School Board.

Other public service positions held by Rep. Smith include AOC Public Lands & Natural Resources Committee, AOC Energy, Environment & Natural Resources Committee, National Association of Counties Public Lands Committee, and Director of America’s Wild River Coast.

After graduating from Pacific Valley High School and attending Southern Oregon Community College and Southern Oregon University, he had a career in the culinary industry in the Rogue Valley, and returned to Port Orford to buy the family business, the Port and Starboard restaurant and lounge.

LISTING OF THE MARBLED MURRELET ON OREGON’S ENDANGERED SPECIES LIST A Resolution by the Oregon Logging Conference Opposing the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commissions Consideration of Listing the Marbled Murrelet on Oregon’s endangered species list.

WHEREAS, In 2018 the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission decided NOT to “up-list” the Marbled Murrelet from threatened to endangered WHEREAS, In 2019 the USFWS concluded a 5-year status review of the Marbled Murrelet and determined that up-listing was not warranted- primarily due to stable population trends across Washington, Oregon, and California, as well as increasing habitat across the same range WHEREAS, On December 6, 2019, the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission voted to reconsider the status of the Marbled Murrelet in response to a Lane County court case filed by activist groups WHEREAS, Studies done by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the U.S. Forest Service between 2000 and 2018 show that the Marbled Murrelet population in Oregon is growing by 1.8% per year WHEREAS, Older forest structure has been on the rise in Oregon for decades since the original listing of both the Northern Spotted Owl and the Marbled Murrelet, in fact since 1995 coastal forests have added an average of 64,710 acres of trees 50 years or older each year according to the National Council for Air and Stream Improvement WHEREAS, Many Oregon timberland owners are committed to long term management but an up-listing of the Marbled Murrelet will drive short term decisions and premature harvest of timber WHEREAS, Up-listing of the Marbled Murrelet could impact access to public lands WHEREAS, Conservation goals can be achieved without an endangered species listing THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that The Oregon Logging Conference go on record in opposition to the up-listing of the Marbled Murrelet from threatened to endangered.

This resolution will be presented by Heidi Leib, Logging Contract Coordinator for Boise Cascade. Heidi is responsible for purchasing and managing federal timber sales and overseeing log quality. She is based in Willamina, OR Leib has also worked for Hancock Forest Management as a silviculture forester and harvest operations manager in northeast Washington. Before entering the private sector she worked for the Idaho Department of Lands and the Washington Department of Natural Resources as a forester, and for the Oregon Department of Forestry as a wildland firefighter.

Her introduction to logging came when she was on the Oregon State University College of Forestry student logging team, which also fueled her passion for the wood products industry.

Leib has a Bachelor of Science degree in Natural Resources from OSU and serves on the board of the Oregon Logging Conference. She is also a committee member of the Beaver chapter of Ducks Unlimited and an alumnus of REAL Oregon.

New Technology Aids Fire Fighting Efforts in Australia

I

t’s bushfire season in Australia.

You’ve seen the reports on television–acre upon acre on fire; firefighters hosing down hot spots; blinding, choking smoke; scorched koalas treading softly across a road on burned feet. Not a pretty sight.

Fires in Australia

Since 1851, bushfires in Australia have had a significant impact on the whole 66

country. More than 800 people and millions of animals have died. So far, the 2019-2020 bushfire season has seen 21 million acres scorched and more than 2,500 buildings and homes incinerated. As of January 2020, 24 civilians and three volunteer firefighters have been killed. Fueled by drought and the country’s hottest, driest year on record, fires have been raging since September, months earlier than is typical for Australia’s annual wildfire season. Of the 120-plus fires burning in four Australian states, half are still not controlled.

The Australian government has called up

3,000 Australian Defense Force reservists to help fight the fires. At this writing, the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho, said at least 100 firefighters from the U.S. will join 159 already deployed in Australia — the largest deployment ever of U.S. firefighters abroad.

In the fight against bushfires, new technology tools are playing a significant role.

Foresters, timber cruisers, and mill operations managers alike can benefit from incorporating laser rangefinders and software solutions into their daily routine. Nikon, a world leader in optics and imaging, has recently introduced its third-generation rangefinder/hypsometer called the Forestry Pro II. The new device is touted to bring a new level of capacity, convenience, and value to forestry professionals, as Nikon continues

its decade-long association with the timber business.

This new model is equipped with enhanced ranging capabilities, improved accuracy, and faster response time for measurement result. It can offer remote measurements for actual distance, horizontal distance, height, and angle, as well as both the difference in height between two targets and three-points measurements. A new log function stores up to 250 measurement results.

In Australia, and certainly here in the U.S., fire managers are increasingly relying on early warning and detection systems, remote technologies, and digital connectivity. Satellites packed with global positioning, high resolution optics, and other digital capabilities are whizzing around the globe helping to make wildfire fighting a more proactive endeavor.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), or drones, have been used primarily for mapping and hotspot detection. They can fly day or night and be fitted with regular and thermal image cameras. Some drones are used to ferry necessary equipment to crews on the ground. In some cases, drones have been used to drop incendiary devices to start back fires.

Another interesting use of technology is the firefighting robot. Used primarily in structure fires, robots have seen duty in wildland operations. Thermite, developed and manufactured by Howe and Howe Technologies in Maine, is a firefighting robot that provides high-definition and infrared images in real-time and can traverse hazardous terrain with maximum control.

Most of the firefighting robots are controlled remotely and are tethered by a fire hose that supplies water. However, Lockheed Martin is also in the game with the Fire Ox, which carries its own water supply.

The U.S. Forest Service is using another high-tech application in training smokejumpers. Created by computers, Virtual Reality (VR) allows you to experience and interact with a 3D world that isn’t real. The display will typically be some sort of headmounted goggle apparatus that splits between your eyes, creating a stereoscopic 3D experience allowing you to explore a virtual world generated by the computer.

USFS trainers are using VR simulators to create fire scenarios in 3D and simulate, in a safe environment, parachuting into remote areas to combat wildfires. Trainers use VR jump simulators to enhance wind direction and speed, exiting the aircraft, parachute maneuvering, emergency situations, and landings.

Forty Years in the Forest Steve Morris Logging and Contracting Humboldt, California

t’s been a lifetime of family commit-

ment to the logging industry. Today, the father-son duo of Steve and Jake Morris is the driving force behind more than 40 years of successful business operations at northern California-based Steve Morris Logging and Contracting. Add adaptability, diversification, the necessary equipment to do the job right, and an experienced crew, and you have a healthy business that has survived and thrived during the ups and downs of the timber industry.

“We’re a pretty diversified company,” says Steve Morris. “We can do a lot of different things, which has kept us afloat over the years, like grinding or logging or making [wood] chips or putting in a bridge — whatever needs to happen, and I think the key is adaptability because of this ever-changing industry.”

Blending Chipping with Logging

Steve Morris is a second-generation logger, and son Jake represents the third generation working in the family business. In 1976, Steve Morris and his dad established Morris Logging in California. Six years later, Steve purchased the logging side of the business from his father and has been working in the woods ever since.

Since then the company has worked in Humboldt County, California, the home base of the business, as well as throughout northern California, doing logging as well as chipping and grinding.

ContractorProfile A few years ago, after more than 20 years of mostly conducting chipping and grinding operations, Steve Morris Logging and Contracting returned to logging. It is this combination of both activities that keeps the company busy these days.

At a logging job in Humboldt County, the company was using a 2012 Tigercat 830LXC feller buncher, a 2017 Doosan 380 processor with a Waratah 624C head, a Cat 535D skidder with bunching grapples, and a Cat 527 track skidder.

Regarding the Tigercat feller buncher they purchased last winter, Jake Morris says, “Dad and I did our homework before buying it, and it’s the most robust, productive buncher on the market.” Couple that with operator Virgil Greene’s 20-plus years of experience, and that’s a powerful combination.

When the feller buncher was purchased, Morris Logging and Contracting mechanics went through all the key components of the machine and made sure it was in top operating condition.

The maintenance of equipment during logging’s off-season is very important to the company. “Everybody in this business knows you only have a short window to make your money, and I knock on wood, this year, we have not had a machine go down for more than an hour all summer,” says Jake Morris.

“A lot of that goes back to what we do in the wintertime in our shop,” he added.

Big Processor

The 2017 Doosan 380 Processor is probably the most recent piece of equipment added to the company operations, and it weighs 115,000 pounds with the Waratah 624C head attached. It was originally purchased for use in the chipping and grinding side of the operations but made the switch over to the logging side in the last two years.

It’s the biggest processor made by Doosan, and according to Morris, the biggest processor on the market.

“The reason we went with that for our processor is because when you run danglehead processors, you need enough hydraulic oil to operate the way the head is designed to be run. That particular machine has an abundance of oil to where you can run that head at its full potential,” says Jake.

“The duo of the feller buncher and the Cat skidders is an efficient combination,” adds Jake. “The feller buncher can have all the turns in bunches, ready to go, so the skidder can make quick turnarounds.”

The swivel seat feature of the 535D Cat skidder is another contribution to increased logging productivity. “There’s no wasted time (continued on page 70) TimberWest Magazine — January/February 2020 — www.forestnet.com

(continued from page 69) in jockeying around,” says Jake. “The operator can drop the turn and then pull ahead, straight out . . . and basically drive the thing like he’s driving forward. The seat will actually swivel with the [joystick] controls, and there are two sets of pedals in the front and the back.”

The Right Piece for the Job

Steve Morris said the Doosan and the other equipment being used in the company’s logging operations are the right machines to do the job right. “If you don’t have a processor to process logs on the landing, you can’t compete,” he adds.

Steve Morris Logging has two skidders working together to improve the efficiency of the logging operations. The Cat 527 Track skidder does much of the more difficult or adverse work on the logging operation, mostly on the steeper ground, so the Cat 535D can operate on the ground that is flatter. Jake says, “What’s nice about having these two skidders is that the 527 can basically do all the nasty ground and keep the big skidder with the bigger grapples going up and down the hill all day with more volume.”

For approximately 20 years, the company exclusively did chipping and grinding work.

That came to a screeching halt in 2003, when the market collapsed, and Morris had to lay off the entire crew. For the next couple of years, Steve Morris and his sons kept the business going, and then things picked up again.

Steve said the chipping and grinding work was “probably some of the most satisfying work that I’ve ever done. Because here it is, it looks like a bomb went off, and we go in there and clean it up, and it looks like a park when we get done.”

Today, for the chipping and grinding portion of the business, the company uses a 4810 Flail debarker and a Morbark Model 30 chipper, along with two Peterson 5710 horizontal grinders.

The Flail debarker and Morbark machines are used to make clean wood chips out of tanoak and other conifer species for Green Diamond Resource Company. This is something Morris Logging and Contracting has been doing for the last five years.

waste can be disposed of (for a fee) at the company’s shop, is processed on site, and then hauled to the D.G. Fairhaven biomass power plant, some 16 miles away.

The second Peterson grinder is moved around to various mills in Humboldt County, producing biomass at those locations, which is then hauled to Samoa.

Year Round Work

Combining the logging and chipping and grinding sides of the business often translates into year-round employment, which keeps an experienced and skilled crew on the job.

“Ultimately the company logs in the good weather and makes chips and processes wood waste during the winter months,” says Jake. “In the winter months, when there are no logs to haul, the truck drivers can transition to chips.”

The crew at Morris Logging and Contracting is cross-trained to work both on the logging side, and the chipping and grinding side of the business. “What I say to the crew is that we’re all on the same team,” says Jake. “The crew does a good job, and we all get along.”

Dynamic Duo

Jake says he is glad to be following in his father’s footsteps. “What I’ll give Dad is that through his whole career, he’s thought outside the box and hasn’t gone with the blueprint of doing everything.” And of his son’s involvement in the company, Steve says, “He helps me think like a 20-year-old, with a fresh perspective on logging.”

Both father and son have a strong work ethic, and Jake says he is proud to be part of the family business. “I like it because we both have the same goal in mind. I think it would be hard to be a partner with somebody that you felt wasn’t pulling as hard as you all the time, but I don’t have to worry about that.”

For Jake, the best part of the job is being able to work side-by-side with his dad. “That’s probably my one biggest joy — to be able to work with him and be happy about it. This is what I grew up doing, and this is what I’m happy doing.”

When it’s time for the company to fully transition to the next generation, Jake will be ready. “That’s the plan,” he says. “Dad and I are joined at the hip with everything that’s here, and in the meantime, I see our present partnership continuing. When I was a kid, I always knew what I wanted to do, and today, I can’t think of a better way to make a living.

It’s hard, good, honest work, you know? I have a lot of pride in the work that I do, and I have a lot of pride in my last name because I’m proud of what my dad built.”

Going Big Katerra Opens CLT mill in Spokane Valley

t seems like every time you turn around, another wood products mill has closed. That’s exactly why it’s so exciting to see a facility open — and a very large one at that.

Biggest Mill in North America

In September, building components manufacturer Katerra opened North America’s highest volume cross-laminated timber (CLT) factory in Spokane Valley, Washington. The 270,000-square-foot facility is strategically located on a 52-acre site with easy access to rail lines and interstate highways.

At full operation, the factory will employ 105 people with an annual manufacturing 72

capacity of 185,000 cubic meters, the equivalent of 13 million square feet of 5-ply panels, and it can produce up to 140 boards per minute. To put this in perspective, it will be able to produce enough material for fifty 250,000 square-foot commercial office buildings per year.

The plant was constructed by primarily local talent — the general contractor was Lydig Construction of Spokane, Washington; McKinstry Company of Spokane handled the mechanicals and HVAC; Evergreen Engineering of Eugene, Oregon, was responsible for engineering; ARC Electric and Lighting of Spokane installed the electrical; and Casey Industrial of Westminster, Colorado, took on the industrial equipment installation.

Technology First

Katerra’s state-of-the-art CLT facility reflects the company’s technology-first approach, incorporating advanced geometric and biometric scanning of lamstock, an onsite kiln for precise moisture control, and artificial intelligence to further improve safety and reduce waste. The result is a consistent, high-quality product.

Katerra’s factory also features the largest CLT press currently in operation globally, offering customers what it says is unmatched design flexibility.

“The press is 12 feet wide, so we can press a 12-foot by 60-foot long panel. We do three-ply, five-ply, seven-ply, and nine-ply,” says Plant General Manager Jason Herman, who was involved with the first CLT plant

in the U.S., SmartLam in Columbia Falls, Montana. Herman also assisted Vaagen Timbers on building their CLT mill in Colville, Washington.

Hermann adds that the company is currently commissioning a sorting line as well as a chipper system, and things are going well.

“I think the industry is going to do very well,” says Herman. “The Europeans have been manufacturing CLT for 30-plus years.

The United States started doing mass timber in about 2012, and demand is continually increasing.”

One of the things that makes Katerra unique is that it offers end-to-end new build services. It provides design, manufacturing, and construction services to deliver a building project from beginning to end. For

CLT, Katerra offers a range of services from material supply and related hardware and materials to install and end-to-end building services.

Although the Katerra plant is still in its startup phase, it has already finished producing product for its first project — the Catalyst Building in Spokane — a dramatic five-story, 150,000-square-foot building that will feature two wings around a light-filled atrium. Katerra is also the general contractor on the project. Expected to open in 2020, it will be the first office building in Washington constructed out of CLT. And the company is well into its third and fourth projects.

Raw Materials

Spokane Valley in which to build their factory in part for the ease of accessibility for product delivery. But the area is also perfect for its access to raw material resources.

Raw material in the form of dimensional lumber is currently coming from Canada, but the company is looking at expanding its raw material supply to locations within the U.S. “What we have to do is get certified for different species in the U.S.,” says Herman.

“We’re currently working on that, and then we will use some fir and larch in the future.

Until that time, we are using small diameter two-by-six spruce, pine, and fir from Canada.”

“We now have a pipeline,” Herman says.

“We’re good through about 2020.”

The facility’s equipment was globally sourced and selected based on a production model. The company determined what it wanted to produce on a daily basis, and based on that, purchased equipment offering production timing that would meet their goals.

The Process

The system is fully automated. Herman says if the wood is good and dry, it can pass

through the CLT process in two-and-a-half hours.

The process is fairly straightforward. The raw material first passes through a sorting line purchased from USNR in Woodland, Washington. The moisture sensors, supplied

by Finna Group of Denver, Colorado, determine which material is dry enough for processing. If the wood is dry enough, it is sent through the CLT production line. If not, it goes into a USNR kiln.

The CLT line has three planers, all manufactured by Gilbert in Roberval, Quebec.

“The wood goes through the first set of planers and gets to near-net-size there,” explains Herman. “Then, on planers two and three, it gets to net-size. Once it travels through the finger jointer, the product makes

a continuous ribbon of lumber up to 60 feet, so we can do our layups in our press.”

From the CLT press, the product travels to one of three CNC machines. Two of the CNC machines were purchased from Uniteam (Biesse), of Thiene, Italy. The third came from Germany’s Hundegger AG. Herman says after the CNC work is complete, the material travels on to the sander, which they sourced from Costa in Archdale, North Carolina. “From the sander, it continues on to the crane we purchased from Galifco Oregon, out of Eugene. The crane offloads the finished CLT panel and prepares it for Quality Assurance/Quality Control certification. Once the panel is

Katerra CLT is tested for its intended use in compliance with the 2018 International Building Code (IBC) and all relevant reference standards including ANSI/APA PRG 320 (2018) for ready use in the U.S. Complete certification for use in Canada was anticipated for late 2019.

The company intends to pursue thirdparty voluntary environmental certification of Katerra CLT to authenticate transparency in its materials and manufacturing process, as well as quantify the embodied environmental impacts of Katerra CLT. This process will begin once the factory has been in operation for at least 12 months.

The environmental label certification Katerra will apply for is a product- and process-specific Type III Environmental Product Declaration to ISO 14025 Environmental labels and declarations; Type III Environmental Declarations Principles and Procedures (EPD).

Excitement for the Future

After so many months of researching, designing, purchasing, contracting, and organizing all the details, Herman says it has been exciting to watch the plant break ground, followed by equipment installation and, finally, the commissioning in May. “During the commissioning time, we had some training,” he says. “There were five of us who went to Europe for about 10 days, and we did some training with some other CLT plants. It was really amazing to see other manufacturers produce their CLT.” When the company is fully staffed, it will employ a wide variety of people from

different industries.

“Our hiring interview process is very effective, and we interview as a management group,” says Herman. “We’ve had very minimal turnover. That is because we treat our people like assets, as they are the assets. We run a sturdy ship here.”

Herman is excited about the future of the CLT industry and is thankful for having a great team.

Herman is not the only one excited about the new CLT plant. U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell, Washington Gov. Jay Inslee, and Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz were all in attendance at the grand opening of the facility and enthusiastic about what it meant to the state and the industry.

“We are so excited to see Katerra’s investment and innovation come to our state, which could not have happened at a better time,” Franz said. “Mass timber

complements the Department of Natural Resources’ forest health work in central and eastern Washington, which will produce byproducts like small diameter trees that can be used to make CLT and create jobs in rural, timber-dependent communities.”

“We have a young generation that is demanding to be saved from climate change and a somewhat older generation who is using their technological prowess, their entrepreneurial zeal, and the incredible skillset that we have in working people in Washington State to give them not only solutions to climate change, but jobs for the future,” said Inslee.

Cantwell added: “Cross-laminated timber is a triple-win that can deliver lowcarbon building materials, promote forest health, and create new timber community jobs.”

Sierra Nevada Stars California Men Shine at the Annual Lumberjack Competition

Nate Hodges displays force and focus as he recoils to deliver another blow.

B

y virtue of how this planet re-

volves, we humans expect stars to initially come into view in the east. Not all stars follow that pattern, however, some — Walt Page and Nate Hodges, in particular — have come up in the west. From California. And these two stars live only 28 miles apart; Page in Tollhouse and Hodges in North Fork.

Lumberjack competitors, both male and female, come from all walks of life. The range of vocations extends from housewives to schoolteachers, to firefighters. A few make their living with wood in one way or another, like Hodges and Page.

The story of a piece of wood begins in the forest and ends with whatever application that particular wood fiber is destined to serve. Precious few lumberjack competitors actually make their living as loggers, filling a role in getting trees started on their journey.

Walt Page is one of those few as he has settled into a career as a contract feller in the forests of Central California. Nate Hodges is on the other end of the spectrum. As a home builder, he installs wood — sills, joists, studs, rafters, sheathing, trim, doors — where they will likely remain for decades; perhaps a century or more. As Mr. Page gets the wooden ball rolling, so to speak, I’ll reveal his story first.

Page Makes His Mark

Page began competing, as many do, while attending college. Studying with majors in forestry and natural resources at Cal Poly, the various sawing and chopping disciplines seemed ideally suited to him. Equally important were his attributes: hand-eye coordination, muscle tone, the ability to adjust stroke and swing mid-event, and no fear of hard work, all of which enabled Page to move up through the competition ranks. And move up he has.

Traveling from his home in Tollhouse to compete in Stihl Timbersports U.S. Championship events in late July, Page finished 3rd out of the ten entrants in Men’s Professional Qualifier Pool B. Page scored very high in two events: standing block (1st place) and springboard (2nd place). He also had solid performances in the other events.

Advancing to face the best of the best, Page placed 5th, putting him in the top half of that elite field.

“The best of the best” didn’t go away as Page competed for three days the following weekend at the Lumberjack World Championships in Hayward, Wisconsin.

When the sawdust and chips stopped flying on that first Saturday night in August, Page was ranked 3rd in springboard and 6th in standing chop. Impressive times in these and other events on earlier days lifted Page to 9th place overall out of 61 competitors. (continued on page 80)

impressive times. Onward to the big stage.

At the same Stihl Timbersports U. S. Championships where Page was competing, Hodges won 1st place in Pool A. Page registered the best times in springboard, standing block, and hot saw events. A 2nd place finish in underhand bolstered his score and guaranteed a slot in the final round. There he finished just one point behind the 2019 Timbersports U.S. Champion, Cassidy Scheer.

Hodges also traveled north to Hayward, bringing with him his style of chopping.

While some axmen and women strike a

graceful pose, Hodges is all about punishing the wood that would dare to stand before him or lie under his feet. He competed in the championship round in hot saw, standing chop, and single buck, outright winning that last event. Steady performances throughout three days of competition placed Hodges 5th in the overall ranking at the Lumberjack World Championships.

The year 2020 is likely to see more of these two Californian stars who have achieved elevated status in lumberjack sports. Competitors beware.

FWS Determines Oregon’s Red Tree Vole Doesn’t Warrant ESA Protections

The American Forest Resource Council (AFRC) reported that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) has determined the North Oregon Coast Distinct Population Segment (DPS) of the red tree vole, a mouse-sized rodent that lives in conifer forests, does not warrant listing as threatened under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).

In 2007, FWS received a petition from the Center for Biological Diversity, Oregon Chapter of the Sierra Club, Audubon Society of Portland, Cascadia Wildlands Project, and Oregon Wild to list the North Oregon Coast DPS of the red tree vole as endangered or threatened. In 2011, FWS issued a 12-month finding that suggested listing was warranted, primarily due to habitat loss. However, listing was later precluded, and the North Oregon Coast DPS was added to the candidate species list. From 2012 to 2016, FWS addressed the status of the North Oregon Coast DPS annually in its candidate notice of review, with the determination that listing was “warranted but precluded.”

After assessing the best scientific and commercial data regarding the threats to the red tree vole, FWS found that despite some impacts from these stressors and some observed decline in abundance, the red tree vole in this area has maintained resilient populations over time, primarily in two large habitat clusters under federal management. Those two large habitat clusters will continue to maintain resiliency and provide redundancy across a large portion of the DPS for the red

tree vole. FWS concluded that the stressors to the red tree vole do not, alone or in combination, rise to a level that causes the North Oregon Coast DPS to meet the definition of an endangered or threatened species. In addition, FWS also rejected petitions to extend ESA protections to four other species: the Ozark chub (fish), purple-disk honeycombhead (plant), sand verbena moth (insect), and the skiff milkvetch (wildflower).

National Outstanding Tree Farmer of the Year Goes to Bellingham Family

The American Tree Farm System awarded the New family of Bellingham, Washington, the National Outstanding Tree Farmers of the Year honor from among more than 70,000 certified tree farmers nationwide, thanks to their efforts of restoring a portion of a critical watershed to help a threatened species in their state.

The New family, David and Dar New, along with their daughter’s family, Jennifer and Jeff Parker and their sons, are owners of the Nourse Family Tree Farm in Bellingham, Washington. The 165-acre property has been in Dar’s family for three generations.

The New family began their stewardship journey with no formal forestry background nor extensive financial resources, yet they wanted to care for the land sustainably.

Diving in head first, they hired a forester to help them write a forest management plan, took landowner education classes, and spent nearly all their weekends at their property.

Their hard work paid off. In 2015, the News were certified by the Washington State Tree Farm Program.

One fall, the News noticed that a run of Coho salmon had become stranded in a field. During the 1950s, one of the tributaries on the property had been ditched to create pastureland. Over time, the lower section silted in, causing the flow to disappear into the grass. Heavy rain had caused the run of salmon to end up in the field.

The New family decided to restore the stream, knowing they would need to overcome costs, time, and lack of expertise to complete the work. With assistance from others, a channel was constructed in August 2016, followed by the planting of 3,000 trees along the 30 acres of stream bank to help prevent erosion and filter and clean the water.

Diane Mettler, Executive Director of the Pacific Logging Congress will take listeners behind the scenes each week to learn more about the Northwest timber industry. Episodes will focus on interviews industry professionals, everyone from foresters to firefighters and from machine operators to log buyers.

“We are excited to be reaching out to a broad audience through Talking Timber,” says Mettler. “Listeners will get a chance to discover what goes into the timber we use each day. And we hope the younger audience will see there are many paths into the industry.”

Can’t See the Forest for the Dead Trees?

T

he forest products industry

needs to significantly modernize its message to the public.

Now is the time to work on that modernization. Forest management science is moving toward new paradigms with management professionals scrambling to adjust. In 2020, climate change has come to be the central focus of nearly all discussion by activist groups antagonistic to the industry, even as forest resilience (the ability to recover after a stand-changing event) is threatened across much of the continent.

The need to find ways to address both forest health and resilience while still preserving the forest’s traditional role in sequestering carbon from the atmosphere is creating a new attitude of willingness on the part of the North American public to utilize the talents of the forest products industry in achieving the new goals the public demands of its forest managers. A “perfect storm” of events filled with opportunity for the future is sweeping over the industry; today, the industry is in a position to sink or wade ashore, changed in some ways, but strong and poised for growth.

It’s All About That Base

As usual the North American forest products industry is under assault from activist groups who would like to see it wither away.

Those groups are developing new messaging and delivering it in new ways. Competitors (steel, concrete, plastics, imported fibers like bamboo and other grasses) also vie to be the building material of choice; the alternative to cutting down trees. The industry must develop compelling counterarguments using terms the public cares about or continue to face troubled times.

Half the population of the United States today is 38 years old or younger. Teethed on social media, they enjoy an almost unlimited ability to communicate; and communicate they do, especially regarding social issues.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GGE) are, for the present, a major concern for that 38 and under crowd. According to Gallup, 45percent of Republican and 88 percent of Democrat registered voters in the 38 and younger age group worry about global warming.

Simply put, if the industry’s message to the public does not begin to explicitly 86

include strong arguments, beyond the “Trees remove carbon from the atmosphere,” tag line, the lines of communication with the social media generation will be permanently damaged; socially conscious youth would rather see carbon sequestered in a standing tree than in a standing building unless, GGE reductions can be seen to be realized as the result of cutting and milling that tree. It’s up to the industry to demonstrate those reductions can be realized.

An Opportunity to Shine

Constance Millar, an award winning Forest Service scientist, points out something new is afoot in today’s forests. “Exceptional droughts, directly and in combination with other disturbance factors, are pushing some temperate forests beyond thresholds of sustainability. Interactions from increasing temperatures, drought, native insects, pathogens, and uncharacteristically severe wildfires are resulting in forest mortality beyond the levels of 20th-century experience.”

Millar is not alone in her concerns. Tony Tooke, former head of the Forest Service, reported, “We have significant tree mortality from insects and disease in the Intermountain West. About 80 million acres on the National Forest System are at risk nationwide, and about a third of that area is at high risk.”

The current head of the Forest Service, Vicki Christiansen, told NPR in June, “A billion acres of land across America are at risk of catastrophic wildfires like last fall’s deadly Camp Fire that destroyed most of Paradise, California.” Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke recently announced: “According to data analyzed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the 2018 wildfire season in California is estimated to have released emissions equivalent to roughly 68 million tons of carbon dioxide. This number equates to about 15 percent of all California emissions.”

Wildfires make spectacular TV, so fires

like the Paradise event are widely covered, but few realize that the damage caused by those fires is just the small tip of the GGE forest-related time bomb. It is no exaggeration to state that billions of trees in North America are dead or dying and becoming a GGE liability rather than serving to absorb and sequester carbon. Forests that were once carbon sinks are now, or in danger of becoming, GGE contributors, and that must become the heart of the forest industry’s message: “We have the will and the ways needed to return our forests to resilience and health, even as we reduce GGEs.”

Content, Believability, and Delivery

Today, in almost every arena of life, extremes have come to rule the discussion. Too often the “middle” is discouraged, disorganized, and disinterested in becoming actively engaged in discussion. If the forest products industry develops and delivers a believable message utilizing the same modern forms of communication activist groups have learned to use so well, the public most able to influence public policy can be activated to make their will known to decision-makers.

Solid science is available to support the effort. Modernizing our message means it’s time to utilize that science to develop an industry-accepted, rational, effective, common sense approach to Greenhouse Gas Reductions that recognizes changing public perceptions, and then deliver that message using every up-to-date messaging approach available to support the effort. This approach should benefit first the public and, as a side benefit, the forest products industry. The future of the North American forest complex—and the industry depending on those forests — is at stake, perhaps, as never before.
