WELCOME

Welcome to the first issue of The Forestry Haulier.

As the UK is the second largest importer of wood after China, timber must be moved from the docks to sawmills and timber merchants to fill the shortfall of our own home-grown timber supplies. Although we must import a lot of wood to fulfil our timber demands, forestry in the UK is still an important and significant industry. It generates over £1 billion annually for the UK economy and employs over 40,000 people. Many hauliers and workers in forestry live in the countryside and the timber industry is a vital resource for jobs and keeping the rural economies afloat.

Forestry haulage is much more than just moving timber from harvesting sites. Harvesting and road building equipment requires low loaders for transport from site to site, while tippers are needed in order to carry materials which are used for building new, and maintaining existing, forest roads. Additionally, fuel and oil needs to be delivered to sites, and woodchip trailers are required to work alongside chippers, while deliveries of fencing materials and young trees are needed in order to establish new forests and restock harvesting sites.

AIR LIQUIDE AND IVECO COLLABORATE TO ACCELERATE THE DEVELOPMENT OF HYDROGEN HEAVYDUTY MOBILITY IN EUROPE

I

VECO, the commercial vehicles brand of CNH Industrial (NYSE: CNHI / MI: CNHI), and Air Liquide, a world leader in gases, technologies and services for Industry and Health, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to develop hydrogen mobility in Europe. The partnership will contribute to materialize clean mobility by leveraging the two companies’ complementary competencies, in particular Air Liquide’s unique expertise across the entire hydrogen value chain, from production and storage to distribution, and IVECO’s legacy as a provider of advanced, clean sustainable transport solutions.

It is possible to drive longer distances with heavy electric transports. Scania and SCA are proving that with a new battery electric vehicle capable of total weights of up to 64 tonnes on public roads and 80 tonnes on private roads. The electric truck will transport timber in the Swedish region of Västerbotten, between SCA’s terminal in Gimonäs and its papermill in Obbola outside Umeå, starting already in 2022. For SCA, which is Europe’s largest private forest owner and maker of sawn wood products, packaging materials and pulp, electrifying road transport is an important part of work to reduce its environmental impact. Every year, SCA transports about 8.5 million cubic metres of wood to industries, utilising 265 timber trucks in collaboration with 87 haulage contractors. ”By running just one electric truck between Gimonäs and Obbola, we can reduce our carbon emissions by about 55,000 kg per year,” says Hans

olvo Trucks has received an order for an additional 25 heavy electric trucks from DFDS, Northern Europe’s largest shipping and logistics company.

The new vehicles are on top of the record order of 100 Volvo FM electric trucks that was made in October.

With a Volvo FM Electric truck it´s possible to drive up to 500 km during a work day, with a fast top-up charge, for example during the lunch break. The Volvo FM Electric has a gross combination weight of up to 44 tons and can be charged both overnight at the home-depot and via high power fast charging on route.

Volvo Trucks started serial production of electric trucks in 2019, as one of the very first truck brands to do so. The product range now includes six electric truck models – the Volvo FH, Volvo FM, Volvo FMX, Volvo FE, Volvo FL and the Volvo VNR, sold in North America. Of the electric trucks (16 tonnes and heavier) registered in Europe so far this year, Volvo Trucks has a market share of just over 40%. www.volvotrucks.com

HOWIE FORESTRY SOLUTIONS

S

ince the early 2000s, Ian Howie, of Howie Forestry Solutions, has been one of the pioneers of low ground pressure (LGP) timber haulage. The company was established by Ian in 1980 initially as an agricultural and forestry contracting business, before it moved into forestry full time in 2006. Ian soon saw the advantages of using an agricultural tractor fitted with wider tyres coupled with a LPG multi-axle trailer for removing timber from harvesting sites and placing it in a stacking area close to the road.

Using LGPs offers many benefits to forest owners and to haulage contractors. Not only does driving on gravelled forest roads increase wear and tear on conventional lorries, but the lorries can also cause considerable damage to forest roads. The cost of maintaining and repairing roads during harvesting operations can be quite substantial.

Driving a timber lorry on narrow forest roads at high altitudes with steep drops in poor weather conditions can be a daunting experience for any driver. 15 mph forest road speed limits have to be adhered to, and so using multiple-drive LGPs designed for these

conditions, with skilled drivers, helps to reduce the possibility of accidents and keeps road lorries on the main roads, allowing them to utilise their driving time more effectively.

All of Ian’s equipment is fitted with the accurate weigh link system from SteelyardPeson, thus allowing him to load timber directly onto haulage companies’ trailers without the drivers being over- or underloaded. This is a substantial saving for haulage companies, as they do not need a crane with which to undertake the loading themselves, and so can load the few extra tonnes of timber that the crane would weigh. Hauliers come in and drop off an empty trailer, following which they pick up the full one, before continuing on their way to their destination.

Most sawmills and woodprocessing plants use their own equipment to unload lorries as they arrive.

HFS is a family-owned company, as Ian’s son Adam is now at the helm. The company operates a fleet of LGP equipment throughout Scotland and Northern England with a comprehensive range of small

to large machines capable of transporting roundwood on all types of forest roads.

Adam served his mechanical engineering apprenticeship with a local agricultural company. After completing his apprenticeship, he spent a year working on agricultural contracts in America and on his return joined his father in the business in 2013. Adam mainly takes responsibility for the engineering side of the business, servicing and taking care of the existing equipment, and when caught up he works on special projects in the workshop. He designed and manufactured the LGP trailers that the company uses, fabricated bespoke frames and stabilising legs on their tractors to attach Kesla cranes, and converted the Ploeger AT4103 and CLAAS Xerion into very capable timber-carrying vehicles.

2014/15 was one of the busiest periods the company had ever encountered: “We were that busy keeping on top of all our contracts, and I was flat out between servicing, carrying out repairs and driving the equipment, that sleep was often

When Ian started the LGP business, his first crane was a Kesla and he has always been delighted with the performance, reliability and build quality; he has never considered using anything else.

All of the company’s LGPs are fitted with Kesla cranes, so when the Scottish distributer for the Finnish company retired, Adam approached Kesla about becoming their new Scottish representative.

No one is in a better position to sell and service a product than a customer who has been using the equipment for almost 20 years. HFS was appointed the Scottish Kesla dealer in September 2021 and offers a full sales, spare parts, and repair service for Kesla cranes and equipment.

MOVALUBE OY HFS is also the UK distributer for the Movalube auto greasing system, which requires no electricity to work. It is operated by hydraulic pressure generated from the components it is greasing. For example, when the crane cabin is raised and lowered, one pump of grease is sent to the moving mechanism.

In this way it is greased when being used as opposed to an electrical system that greases on a pre-set timer, regardless of whether or not the system is in use. There are no electric cables that can oxidise or circuits that can fail, thus making it the ideal system for challenging forestry, construction, and mining conditions. It has been designed to work effectively in all types of weather and comes with a

Movalube offers a substantial saving each year by reducing wear and tear on pins, joints and bushes, and saves over two days a year on maintenance time. It only needs refilling around once a month and is easy and quick to replenish.

Adam can fit this system to most

equipment in approximately one day, and the aforementioned system will not be long in recouping its initial outlay. It complies with ADR regulations and can be used safely on trucks and vehicles that carry dangerous cargo.

STEELYARD-PESON As stated earlier, HFS uses the Steelyard-Peson weigh link system, which its staff members have found to be highly accurate and reliable, so much so that

the company is now an authorised dealer and can supply and fit these weighers onto customers’ vehicles and loading equipment.

This is a wireless onboard weighing system installed between the end of the dipper boom and the rotator. It increases productivity by saving considerable loading time while maximising load capacity and distribution without overloading the vehicle. It is accurate no matter what position the vehicle is in, level or sloped, and is very sturdy as it is manufactured from a solid block of highlytensile steel.

Fitting takes around half a day and it is easy to set up, use and is maintenance free.

The weigh link is resistant to extreme shocks and designed for intensive use with different models in the 4, 8, 16 or 32 tonne scale to fit all types of linkages. It is a wireless communication system between the link and screen and requires no factory calibration. The weigh link has low energy consumption, powered by a battery which lasts around a year. It is available with the new 7” touchscreen, which boasts an easy-to-read, and easy-to-operate, colour display, in addition to simplified data transmission for crane cabins or the mono-chrome 4.3” backlit display with large buttons and steel protection for use with gloves, which can be mounted in the cabin or on the crane’s top seat.

GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES MAJOR REVIEW INTO HGV DRIVER TRAINING

A

sweeping review will seek to improve compulsory ongoing training for HGV and bus drivers, in the latest of 30 measures to support the road haulage sector and encourage even more people to return to the profession.

Shapps said: “We’re listening to industry leaders who have told us about the issues HGV drivers face with CPC arrangements.

Now we’ve taken back control of our own laws and regulations, I’m delighted to say we’re launching a review into these training rules.

Drivers currently need to undergo 5 days of periodic training every 5 years to ensure they remain fully qualified to drive heavy goods vehicles and buses professionally and up to date with road safety standards.

“We understand it’s vital for drivers to remain fully qualified – but we’re looking to ensure they can do so in the most efficient way possible whilst maintaining road safety standards. No driver should be out of pocket or out of work through no fault of their own.

This training is an EU initiative and is compulsory within what is known as the Driver Certificates of Professional Competence (DCPC) regime.

While its aim is to keep standards high, some drivers are left to pay for the training themselves and are not paid whilst attending their training course. Feedback from industry suggests this puts off many drivers who have left the profession from returning.

The review will look at how the process can be updated to reduce the burden on drivers – both returning and new – and ensure it doesn’t act as a barrier to working in the sector, as the government continues to bolster supply chains and tackle the global driver shortage here in the UK. “This is the latest in a raft of 30 measures we’ve taken to support this vital sector and encourage drivers to return to the job or kickstart a new career in the industry. These measures are working – there is no backlog of HGV licence applications and we’re seeing over a thousand more people than normal apply for a licence each week.”

In a further move to encourage more people back to the sector and attract new recruits, the government is working with key stakeholders to identify a number of lorry parks across the country where short-term facilities such as temporary toilets, showers and catering can be delivered in the coming months.

The government also emphasised the expectation that councils consider new proposals for these vital facilities constructively and has committed to review guidance that will assist this.

This follows the £32.5 million recently committed in the Chancellor’s budget to provide better facilities right across the country for HGV drivers, which will drive up standards of roadside parking and facilities for our hauliers and further safeguard driver well-being, comfort and safety. £500,000 will also be added to the existing Mode Shift Revenue Support Fund for 2021 to 2022, in another boost to the country’s supply chains.

This £20 million grant scheme provides funding to privatesector freight companies to encourage them to move more freight from the country’s roads to either the railways or inland waterways.

The additional funding equates to taking a significant 29,000 lorry loads of goods off the roads up until the end of March 2022 and will help to generate more environmentally friendly modes of transporting freight.

“Meanwhile, the extra funding for the Mode Shift Revenue Support scheme will help industry to reach net zero emission targets while reducing road congestion.”

Among other measures already taken to support the haulage industry, the testing process has been streamlined, the number of weekly HGV tests available has increased by 90% and training for up to 5,000 new drivers through skills bootcamps has been announced.

The DVLA has processed over 40,000 HGV and vocational licence applications in just 4 weeks, with applications that don’t require complex medicals being turned around in just 5 working days. DVSA is providing 1,350 more tests than normal a week at sites all over the country.

These measures are working.

Not only are vocational licence applications being processed in normal 5-day turnaround times with no backlogs, over the past 3 weeks, we’ve seen around a 90% increase in the number of people requesting application packs for vocational licences each week.

SCANIA UNVEILS ITS NEW FLAGSHIP, STATE-​OF-THE-ART SERVICE CENTRE AT EUROCENTRAL Scania GB is delighted to officially open its latest sales and service centre, located at Eurocentral in Scotland.

The £10m investment occupies a 7.8 acre plot and contains a fully operational workshop and parts department, with office accommodation and extensive secure parking. The building was recently used as a venue to host Scania’s Net Zero Conference, organised in the backdrop of COP26, where the company spoke about its sustainable agenda and plans for supporting decarbonisation.

The impressive building is completely fossil free and boasts a range of sustainable features including a high-efficiency underfloor Air-source heating system, sustainable drainage and environmental containment in accordance with local regulations, water recycling in its vehicle wash, LED lighting throughout and

roof-mounted energygenerating photovoltaic panels.

This new facility is an impressive addition to Scania’s property portfolio and will become the central hub for employees and customers of Scania Scotland.

The previous workshop at Bellshill has now closed and all employees have moved across to this new location.

Christian Levin, CEO & President of Scania and Traton, officially inaugurated the site when he visited earlier this month.

RENAULT TRUCKS IN BLAINVILLE-SURORNE ANNOUNCES THE HIRING OF 100 OPERATORS

gainst a background of strong economic growth, the Renault Trucks manufacturing site at Blainvillesur-Orne, the first European plant to manufacture series production electric trucks, has announced a plan to hire 100 operators for 2022. As demand for electric vehicles intensifies, the plant, which has already boosted its production capacity, is increasing its workforce in response.

Sustained production levels at the Blainville-sur-Orne (Calvados) plant, coupled with favourable development prospects, particularly in the field of electric vehicles, have led Renault Trucks to invest in additional and sustainable manufacturing jobs. Since 2020, the Blainville-sur-Orne plant has been mass-producing mediumduty electric trucks. In 2021, in response to the growing demand for electric vehicles, it adapted its manufacturing facilities and increased production capacity to meeting

rising demand from the market.

The plant plans to produce a couple of thousand units per year.

In order to meet the challenges of future mobility, the plant is expanding its workforce by recruiting 100 operators on permanent contracts in 2022 for its medium-duty diesel and electric truck production.

Peter started out as an apprentice engineer with JCB, when he was 17 years old, and after serving his time he continued his engineering career with TH White, Outreach and Tree Harvesting (which became a part of the BSW group). 21 years ago, Peter took the plunge and started out on his own, building up an excellent client base, including one of the UK’s largest timber hauliers, Kieron M Owen from Carno in Powys.

I first met Peter five years ago and it doesn’t surprise me that the business has doubled in size since then; it is a professional company with a one-price-fitsall structure. Whether you run a fleet of lorries or are an owner driver, the pricing structure for all is exactly the same.

The company installs 20-30 Palfinger-Epsilon cranes each year and usually has a selection of good used cranes that are available for sale. It was FTM which introduced the Big Foot central tyre inflation (CTI) system into the UK, and it has been successfully supplying and using this system for many years. Numerous foresters insist on hauliers having this system fitted while travelling in the forest, as lowering the tyre pressure reduces the ground pressure and reduces damage to the forest road surface. This system also helps to keep the tyre inflated in the event of a slow puncture and allows the driver to continue to the nearest repair shop instead of parking up and having to wait for an expensive call out from a mobile tyre repair company.

In addition, FTM offers its customers the reassurance of a

professional maintenance and repair service for both its own products and those from other manufacturers.

I visited Peter at FTM just before the Christmas holidays, as he had sourced some new and exciting products, and was keen to show me.

First up were the new Gsodan trailers, for which he is the sole UK distributer. Peter explained that trailers are proving difficult to supply in the UK, as there are long lead times from ordering to delivery. Ideally he was looking for light but strong structures that would stand up to the harsh conditions of our forest, with a competitive price structure. During lockdown he discovered the Austrian trailer manufacturer Gsodan Fahrzeugbau – a family-owned company that has been established since 1918. Gsodan was initially a hoof and wagon forge and diversified into forestry vehicles in the late

The new Gsodan trailer which had just arrived in his yard looked to be a well-constructed trailer with a clean twin beam chassis. The electric cables and air lines are mounted out of harm’s way, alloy wheels are used for weight reduction, and bolt-on light units are easily replaced in the event of a mishap. The trailers have the option of Haldex or KnorrBremse braking systems.

Peter can offer customers Alucar superstructures and bolsters or EXTE bolsters and load tensioners, as he is an authorised distributer for both.

Peter initially purchased one trailer for stock, since, due to COVID-19 restrictions, he was unable to visit Gsodan and had to communicate via Skype and email with 2D then 3D CAD drawing. He had to be sure that the Gsodan engineers understood his requirements, as it was imperative that the trailer conformed to all UK legislation. He was impressed, as he was dealing directly with the owner all the way through the discussions.

The 44-foot trailer arrived just three months after being ordered, and Peter was delighted with it. Everything was as it should be, and he was impressed with the build quality and the fact that Gsodan had listened and delivered exactly what he had ordered. Kieron Owen came to have a look and he too was so impressed that he bought it and asked Peter to fit EXTE bolsters and an Epsilon

The tractor unit is a tag axle Scania 650 V8 with a tractor and trailer combined, coming in at just 17,750kg. FTM is the sole distributer for Gsodan products, with four trailers now having been sold and a further three on order.

KELLER FORSTMACHINEN Peter had another new product to show me, but first we stopped at a section in the workshop that he calls the Aluminium Glitter side of the business. Here is situated all of the latest equipment for cutting and shaping aluminium infills, catwalks, light bars and other intricate customisation work. He showed me some of the work he had done on trailers and lorries that were currently in the workshop, and the quality of the work was impressive.

His other new product was one of the most ingenious bits of engineering I have seen in a long time, namely the ROKE adaptor, manufactured by Keller Forstmachinen from Switzerland.

This is an adaptor with a male and female flange that couple together using locating pins and quick release hydraulic couplings. It is used on cranes for a quick change-over between log grabs, brash grabs, buckets, tree shears and other attachments.

You then lift the crane, leaving the attachment on the ground, and the male and female flanges are lined up for the next attachment you wish to use – there is a flat plate that makes lining it up correctly

very easy. Once the two flanges have been located together, it is possible to turn the three cap screws a half turn clockwise, at which point one is ready to go to work. This whole process takes around 60 seconds, with no mess or fuss.

The flanges are compact, neat and add very little weight; the

only alternative to this fitting which I have seen is the cumbersome and heavy quick hitch, which is better suited to larger excavators. This is a huge labour- and time-saving attachment for anyone using cranes for different purposes in their working day. www.ftmltd.co.uk

very truck driver will know the feeling of emerging from the cab after a long drive and finally getting to stretch your legs. That brief respite can be a blessing after all that time spent sitting. But did you know that you’re in danger of getting chronic back pain as a truck driver? According to a small study, 59% of drivers experience lower back pain, but this figure could be even higher.

All of those long hours sat down in a vibrating vehicle can wreak havoc on your spine, leading to stiffness and eventually severe

back pain. Sitting down for long periods can lead to disc dehydration. This is when the disks lose fluid, causing your spine to compress and creating pain. Additionally, vibrations from your truck can make this worse. Each of those rattles and vibrations will cause your discs to lose yet more fluid, increasing back pain .

PREVENTING PAIN Thankfully, there are ways you can prevent and alleviate back pain as a truck driver. A good starting point is adding a lumbar pillow to your seat,

which will naturally support your back while you drive.

There are also exercises that you can incorporate into your driving breaks like squats and spine twists. However, you should resist the urge to leap out of your seat and start stretching right away - doing so could do more damage.

More iterations will follow for markets outside Europe and for biogas solutions.

The new powertrain also includes new gearboxes and axles, and a premium service, Scania ProCare, for customers that request 100 percent planned uptime. Scania is also introducing an option for digital rearview mirrors for increased safety.

he 510 hp variant of MAN’s flagship truck received the prestigious award in the semitrailer tractor category at Italy’s Ecomondo, one of Europe’s leading trade fairs for sustainable and regenerative circular economy.

The jury, which was made up of top international trade journalists, praised the TGX 18.510 as being particularly fuel-saving, efficient, and environmentally friendly.

The title is one of numerous international awards that MAN’s new generation of trucks has already won since its market launch in February 2020, including the International Truck of the Year 2021 as well as design prizes such as the Red Dot Design and German Design Award.

distinguished veteran with 22 years of combined service in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves received the annual “Transition Trucking: Driving for Excellence” award during a special ceremony held at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation in Washington, D.C. For the sixth consecutive year, Kenworth teamed with the FASTPORT Trucking Track Mentoring Program and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Hiring our Heroes Program to find America’s top rookie military veteran who made the successful transition from active duty to driving for a commercial fleet.

During the ceremony, professional truck driver Jimmy Reddell of Stevens Transport received the keys to a Kenworth T680, the top award in the recognition program. UK CONFIRMS PLEDGE FOR ZEROEMISSION HGVS BY 2040 AND UNVEILS NEW CHARGEPOINT DESIGN

A

ll new heavy goods vehicles in the UK will be zero-emission by 2040, the UK government has recently confirmed. This, combined with the UK’s 2030 phase out for petrol and diesel cars and vans, represents a world-leading pledge to end the sale of all polluting road vehicles within the next 2 decades.

Chile, Canada and a number of US states this year to ensure all new cars are zero emission by 2035. Also announced, a number of emerging markets and developing economies have committed to work to accelerate the adoption of zero emission vehicles in their markets, including India, Ghana, Kenya, Paraguay, Rwanda and Turkey.

The UK will become the first country in the world to commit to phasing out new, non-zero emission heavy goods vehicles weighing 26 tonnes and under by 2035, with all new HGVs sold in the UK to be zero emission by 2040.

The UK government is also unveiling a new design for electric vehicle chargepoints, which could become as iconic as the Great British post box, London bus or black cab.

Showcased in the UK Pavilion at COP26 and designed together with the Royal College of Art and PA Consulting, the concept prioritises inclusivity and ease of use, designed with consumers, local government, accessibility groups and industry.

A group of ministers and industry leaders committed to working towards 100% zero emission new car and van sales by 2040 or earlier met at Transport Day at COP26. Thirtyfour countries, 6 major vehicle manufacturers (GM, Ford, Mercedes, BYD, Volvo, JLR), 41 cities, states and regions, 28 fleets and 13 investors all jointly set out their determination for all new car and van sales to be zero emission by 2040 globally and 2035 in leading markets.

In this group, companies like Sainsbury’s and countries including El Salvador and New Zealand are today making new commitments to 100% zero emission vehicles. They follow proposals made by the EU,

The design concept will provide greater choice to industry and local government, as well as raise awareness and generate excitement around electric vehicles, as we build one of the most convenient, affordable and reliable charging networks in the world. This builds on our goal to make sure everyone benefits from the transition to zero emission transport. ZEVs are already cheaper to run in the UK than petrol or diesel cars and are expected to become cheaper to buy in the coming years.

As one of the new Glasgow Breakthroughs launched by the Prime Minister at the World Leaders Summit, 30 countries have agreed to work together to make zero emission vehicles the new normal by making them accessible, affordable, and sustainable in all regions by 2030 or sooner.

This goal is guiding the Zero Emission Vehicle Transition Council (ZEVTC), which will today meet with distinguished representatives, including experts on the transition in emerging markets and developing economies, to discuss how international collaboration can support a global transition. The council will launch its first annual action plan, which sets out areas for sustained international cooperation to accelerate the transition during 2022. Also announced today, the US will join the UK as co-chair of the ZEVTC, reflecting the council’s growing ambition over the coming years.

Several initiatives are being launched to help ensure a global and equitable transition to ZEVs and support the acceleration of transport decarbonisation.

This includes the World Bank’s Global Facility to Decarbonise Transport – a multi-donor trust fund that will mobilise US$200 million over the next ten years

The UK has announced a £4 million initial contribution to the fund, which will support these countries to accelerate the decarbonisation of transport and build greener and more resilient economies.

We know that transport plays a key role saving the planet from warming above 1.5°C, which is why this is the COP that will kick start our ambition for zero emission aviation and why I’m proud to be uniting world leaders to tackle climate change – creating new opportunities for clean growth, green jobs and improved air quality right across the globe.

“To support the transition to EVs, it’s integral that we have the infrastructure to support it.

My vision is for the UK to have one of the best EV infrastructure networks in the world, with excellent British design at its heart.”

Twenty-three states from across the world, representing over 40% of global aviation emissions, have also committed to work together to achieve an ambitious new aviation decarbonisation target through the International Civil Aviation Organization, as part of a new International Aviation Climate Ambition Coalition. Together with the World Economic Forum

and other governments, the UK is also leading efforts to accelerate the global uptake of sustainable aviation fuels.

Twenty-two governments have also stated their intent to support the establishment of green shipping corridors – zero-emission shipping routes between 2 ports. This will involve deploying zeroemission vessel technologies and putting alternative fuel and charging infrastructure in place in ports to allow for zero emission shipping on key routes across the globe. This could in turn mean that taking a zero emission ferry could be part of our holidays, or that everyday household goods, including food and clothes, could soon arrive on zero emission ships.

Twenty-eight offshore wind industry stakeholders have committed to work together toward making zero emission operations and maintenance vessels a reality in the North Sea by 2025.

British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA) Chief Executive, Gerry Keaney, said: “This announcement is a welcome update and will support the industry in its drive towards decarbonisation. BVRLA members are already leading the way in making positive changes and it’s vital that regulations acknowledge the different challenges experienced from one vehicle type to another.

“Use cases of HGVs vary s

ignificantly, so we welcome the government’s intention to consult on derogations that will enable a fair and achievable transition. The BVRLA looks forward to working with the government on the delivery plan that will be essential in ensuring the UK road transport network can be decarbonised successfully.

“The approach must be comprehensive, particularly around HGVs where the barriers remain huge. The recent funding that was announced to support trials of zero emission technology for the sector is a very positive step, and we eagerly await the clarity this will bring to help meet the phaseout dates.”

Olly Craughan, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility at DPDgroup UK Ltd said: “We totally support the withdrawal of the selling of new, non-zero emission HGVs in the UK by 2035, as we do the sale of new diesel/petrol final mile fleet vehicles by 2030. We would urge all parties involved in the supply of alternative green HGVs to press the fast forward button on their development plans so businesses like ourselves can make the transition as soon as possible.

JOINT VENTURE AGREEMENT FOR EUROPEAN HIGH-PERFORMANCE CHARGING NETWORK

T

he three leading commercial vehicle manufacturers the TRATON GROUP, Daimler Truck, and Volvo Group have now signed a binding agreement to create a joint venture (JV) to install and operate a highperformance public charging network for battery electric, heavy-duty long-haul trucks and coaches across Europe.

As previously communicated, the parties are committed to initiating and accelerating the necessary build-up of charging infrastructure for the increasing number of customers of electric vehicles in Europe and contribute to climate-neutral transportation in Europe by 2050. The JV creation is subject to regulatory approvals.

The planned JV — to be equally owned by the three parties — is scheduled to start operations in 2022 following completion of all regulatory approval processes. The parties are together committing to invest €500 million, which is assumed to be by far the largest charging infrastructure investment in the European heavy-duty truck industry to date. The plan is to install and operate at least 1,700 high-performance green energy charging points on and close to highways as well as at logistic and destination points within five years of the establishment of the JV. The number of charging points is with time intended to be increased significantly by seeking

additional partners as well as public funding. The future JV is planned to operate under its own corporate identity and be based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The future JV will be able to build on the broad experience and knowledge of its heavy-duty trucking founding partners.

The future JV will act as catalyst and enabler for realizing the European Union’s Green Deal for carbon-neutral freight transportation by 2050 — both by providing the necessary infrastructure and targeting green energy at the charging points. The joint action of the TRATON GROUP, Daimler Truck, and Volvo Group addresses the urgent need for a highperformance charging network to support truck operators with their transition to CO₂-neutral transport solutions, especially in heavy-duty long-distance trucking. High-performance charging infrastructure enabling long-haul trucking is a costefficient way towards significant, fast-to-realize emission reductions. This initiative is a significant start and an accelerator to make CO₂-neutral heavy trucks and coaches a success.

The three partners see this as a breakthrough for the transport industry to cut carbon emissions — and for other industries to benefit in several ways. A recent industry report is calling for up to 15,000 high-performance

public and destination charging points by no later than 2025, and up to 50,000 highperformance charging points by no later than 2030. Therefore, this kick-start is a call for action to all other industry players, as well as governments and policy makers, to work together for a rapid expansion of the necessary charging network to be able to contribute to reaching the climate targets.

As a clear signal towards all stakeholders, the charging network of the three parties will be open and accessible to all commercial vehicles in Europe, regardless of brand.

CUSTOMER-CENTRIC APPROACH TAKING DIFFERENT APPLICATIONS INTO CONSIDERATION By focusing on customers’ needs, different applications will be taken into consideration.

Battery electric vehicle fleet operators will be able to leverage both fast charging tailored to the 45-minute mandatory rest period in Europe focusing on long-distance transport — the highest priority of the future JV — and also overnight charging.

The TRATON GROUP, Daimler Truck, and Volvo Group will own equal shares in the planned JV but continue to be competitors in all other areas. The creation of the JV is subject to regulatory approvals. www.traton.com
