hen is a raw material not a raw material? When it is not responsibly sourced.

This is the undeniable trend we have seen in the world over the past few decades and arguably far more prominently in the past two years – the growing appetite for sustainability, rather than being sidelined, has accelerated through the pandemic.

This is most publicly seen in the actions of large corporates such as like Apple or BMW, which are heavily marketing their efforts to work with upstream metal providers to ensure raw materials that make it into a smart phone or a sedan have not compromised communities or the environment on their way to the consumer.

This is a new thing for the metals sector.

For so long, the path from a mine site, regularly in the third or developing world, was too far removed from the consumer for them understand the impacts – a mine will sell a concentrate to a smelter to make a metal that will be turned into a widget that will be bought by a customer-facing manufacturer, like an Apple or BMW. Ignorance of this process protected the sector from early demands for transparency. Only with the rise of social media alongside a crusading moral conscious among Millennials have the negative impacts this process can sometimes have become reflected by consumer behaviour.

It is no coincidence that the latest industrial revolution that facilitated smart phones and social media has also underwritten the metal sector’s response – the complicated digitalisation, artificial intelligence and blockchain technologies responsible for managing the metal industries convoluted supply chain and eased, then automated, its management.

This month Costa Rica reported it was partnering with technology group Timbeter on a pilot project aimed at ultimately digitalising the country’s wood management and therefore improving transparency, which would increase competitiveness in a

world where being able to prove products are responsibly sourced is a foundation of commerce.

“Our goal is to obtain clear benefits from the use of technology for efficient and sustainable management of the sector,” Costa-Rica Vice-Minister of Environment Franklin Paniagua said. “It is important to guarantee transparency and traceability of management, in order to increase the competitiveness of companies that market and export wood.”

We would argue without such technology ambitious certification schemes that stand up to international scrutiny are often insurmountable undertakings in developing economies.

Certification is nothing new in forestry. The Forest Stewardship Council certification scheme is 30 years old. Like metals, consumers demanded higher standards though the link between the forest and the end product – often a basic piece of timber – is easier to understand and so demands were made earlier; by almost three decades, as it turns out.

But to comply with certification takes a huge cooperative effort and investment in securing the supply chains to the certified standard.

It is no great surprise that the first countries to certify their forestry sectors were those that could afford to and those emerging economies with a forestry sector large enough to justify investment.

The same technology being applied to the metal industry’s complex challenge can now be applied to all forestry sector management and certification schemes. Where certification is in place, it is making it easier. But, arguably more importantly, in countries where certification was proving too hard, technology is providing a ticket to establish a timber exporting sector at scale for the first time.

John Deere expands its attachments family with new Mulchers & Brush Cutters for excavators John Deere has introduced new additions to its attachment family for excavators with the ME36 and ME50 Mulchers, and the RE40 and RE50 Rotary Brush Cutters.

The ME36 and ME50 mulchers are equipped with knife-style cutting teeth on a split ring rotor.

The spiral, double helix tool pattern and innovative tool shape allow for fast, efficient cutting for mulch up to 5-inch material. A controlled and metered cutting depth allows the operator to maintain high rotor revolutions per minute (RPM) and a productive mulching rate.

The teeth may be sharpened and easily flipped for a fresh cutting edge, extending the tool’s life. The mulcher attachments are ideal for right-of-way maintenance and fire/ fuel reduction, clearing standing or felled trees and brush along fencerows, roadsides, waterways, and other hard-to-reach places.

The RE40 and RE50 brush cutters bring more versatility for excavators. These brush cutters are ideal for embankment and ditch management, over-fence brush management, rail right-ofway maintenance, and otherwise difficult to reach areas. Three swinging blades mounted to a blade carrier can fell and cut material up to 6 inches in diameter.

A heavy-duty hinged debris shield retracts when the head is engaged with trees and brush, exposing the

blades, and allowing for aggressive cuts.

The RE40 and RE50 brush cutters directionally beveled blades push material into the head of the cutter, creating fine debris for recycling. The blades are also reversible, so when the leadingedge wears, they can be unbolted and flipped over for a fresh cutting edge. An automatic hydraulic braking system quickly stops the blade rotation after the machine is turned off, so operators can exit the cab.

Equipped with a bolt-on mounting system, the RE cutters offer flexible configuration to a variety of coupling systems. If coupling requirements change, units can be quickly and easily reconfigured.

“Both attachment lines offer customers a means to step into the growing vegetation management segment of machine use,” said Jason Simmons, Project Manager of Global Attachments at John Deere Construction and Forestry Division. The features of the

mulchers and cutters deliver value to customers so they can achieve high productivity, uptime and low operating costs. These attachments are tested in the toughest applications, ensuring they will get the job done and are durable enough to last.

The attachments are tested and optimized to work with John Deere excavators, but the mulchers are also compatible with many

competitive 5–10 ton excavator models, and the brush cutters are also compatible with many competitive 3–10 ton excavator models.

Third generation family member to lead Operations Mindi Vanden Bosch has been named the next Vice President of Operations at Vermeer Corporation.

Prior to joining Vermeer in 2008, Mindi held roles in continuous improvement at Cascade Engineering and treasury management at Fifth Third Bank. Ponsse to strengthen its operations in the Czech Republic Ponsse Group will be independently responsible for its sales, spare parts and maintenance services in the Czech Republic.

On 4 February 2022, Ponsse signed a deed of sale, in which it agrees to purchase all shares in KŘENEK FOREST SERVICE s.r.o (hereinafter “Krenek”), its PONSSE forest machine and service dealer in the Czech Republic. The aim is that PONSSE services in the Czech Republic will transfer to Ponsse Group by 1 April 2022.

The company will operate as a subsidiary wholly owned by Ponsse.

Krenek’s employees will continue in the service of the purchased limited liability company under their current employment contracts and benefits. Ponsse has prepared a comprehensive integration plan that will ensure a positive continuation of the local business and sufficient induction for the employees.

The business arrangement has no impact on the previous guidance. The price of the transaction between Krenek and Ponsse will not be made public by mutual agreement, because

the purchase price has no impact on the measurement of Ponsse’s value. The purchase price will be paid in cash on the condition that certain requirements set for the transaction are fulfilled. Ponsse will finance the acquisition from its cash assets.

PONSSE forest machines have a market share of about 20 per cent in cut-to-length (CTL) harvesting in the Czech Republic, and there are 290 PONSSE forest machines in the country.

Krenek has been Ponsse’s official dealer since 2013, having operated for ten years through Wahlers Forsttechnik GmbH, Ponsse’s dealer in Germany. In 2020, a total of 34.5 million m3 of wood was harvested in the Czech Republic, with nearly all harvesting operations centred in areas damaged by bark beetles.

The normal annual harvesting volume in the Czech Republic is approximately 13–17 million m3.

A sustainable level of harvesting is 22 million m3 per year in the country, allowing forests to regenerate more quickly than they are harvested.

Earlier in November 2021, Ponsse announced its intention to establish a subsidiary in Chile as well. Following the establishment of these new subsidiaries, Ponsse Group consists of 14 subsidiaries

and 44 dealers. In addition to its international subsidiaries, Ponsse Group includes the technology company Epec Oy in Finland.

Exports account for 80 per cent of Ponsse’s production at its factory in Vieremä, Finland. In addition to the company to be acquired in the Czech Republic, Ponsse has European subsidiaries in Sweden, Norway, France, the UK, and Ireland.

A compact and strong harvester head with high productivity A little more than thirty years ago, Benny Lundmark founded Mano Skog AB, a company working out of Fromheden/Norsjö, about 80 km west of Skellefteå in northern Sweden. Over the years, the company has got through many machines and harvester heads, the latest combination being a John Deere 1470 equipped with an SP 661 LF, which, according to Tobias Lundmark, is the best head they have ever used.

2000T – New thinning specialist from Logmax

Log Max’s smallest harvester head 928 has been around since the 90s, but now a successor is coming. The new Log Max 2000T both saws and feeds faster than its predecessor.

Small thinning machines such as Terri and Malwa have given new life to Log Max’s smallest harvester heads that did not really fit into the company’s product range when the thinning harvests became larger. To offer owners of these smaller machines a highperformance harvester head with modern functions and increased efficiency, Log max has now developed 2000T with a feed speed of four meters per second. Almost one meter per second or the equivalent of 30 percent faster than the old 928.

Small but efficient 2000T is a small but efficient thinning unit. The unit is suitable for small base machines, which run in dense stands or where ground conditions are sensitive.

The development that the unit has undergone will make our customers really satisfied, says Lars Strömsund, marketing manager at Log Max in a press release.

The frame construction is the same as on the 928, but the new unit has, among other things, got more durable twig knives with a different angle and smaller, faster feed wheel motors of 280 cubic centimeters compared to the previous 365 cubic motors.

Higher pressure The hydraulic pressure has been adjusted up from 210 to 280 bar, which gives the smaller engines increased feed speed while maintaining traction.

Also the saw, which is of the Easy-Cut model and has become faster due to the increased

Log Max has also taken the opportunity to replace most of the unit’s hydraulic cylinders with new, more durable variants and the length measurement has been updated with a non-contact sensor.

Ponsse opens new service centre in Joensuu This €2.5 million investment is based on growing Ponsse’s market share and machine base in Eastern Finland as well as a desire to better serve their customers. us to provide an even better level of service to our customers and ensure a fast turnaround for machine maintenance. On the spare parts side, we can now provide a delivery service, making it possible for our customers to sign a service agreement on equipment purchases,” explains Ponsse Finland’s country director Jani Liukkonen.

The modern service centre in Joensuu will further improve the quality and efficiency of maintenance and service in Finland. The ca. 1,000 m2 service centre includes field and information system maintenance, spare parts and machine sales, technical support as well as a well-stocked spare parts storage and Ponsse Shop. The maintenance shop and spare parts storage are in

the same facility to ensure a quick turnaround and thus the most uninterrupted harvesting services possible.

There are a total of 13 employees at the Joensuu service centre. Along with the new facility, they will focus more on personnel training with an option to increase their volume of personnel if necessary.

“The new service centre allows

Smart Creep for CAT D3 Loaders simplifies attachment performance Caterpillar’s new smart creep feature for skid steers and compact track loaders is designed to take the guess work out of setting the right creep speed for operating attachments such as cold planers and wheel saws.

Smart creep, which senses the load on the attachments and automatically adjusts the drive command for the most productive speed, is expected to be commercially available later this year. At that time, Caterpillar’s full range of D3 loaders will come smart creep ready from the factory.

Smart creep works through a combination of attachment sensors and proprietary software which balances attachment load and machine speed to maximize productivity.

By continually sensing the load on the attachment, smart creep increases machine speed when encountering less resistance and

automatically slows the machine when encountering higher load.

Engine load remains constant, while the operator can monitor hydraulic pressure on the in-cab display panel.

Without the aid of this feature, setting creep speed too fast can lead to stalling the attachment, and too slow of speed results in productivity loss. Smart creep software smoothly and efficiently determines the optimal machine speed for cutting conditions, Caterpillar says. With smart creep, the operator needs only to activate the standard creep control system and set the maximum creep speed on the advanced display inside the cab.

Once the tool engages the cut, smart creep measures load on the attachment and adjusts the drive command automatically as cutting begins. In the event of the cutter jamming or stalling, an auto

reverse feature within smart creep quickly changes machine direction to allow the tool to clear the jam.

Targeted availability for smart creep on Cat D3 SSL and CTL machines is the third quarter of 2022. A field installation kit consisting of sensors and machine software for operating the new feature will be made available for existing fleet loaders and attachments.

Auto tilt bucket control With integrated machine control, auto tilt bucket control assists operators by aligning the bucket parallel with the slope, so that finish grading can be accomplished without needing to align the machine with the target surface.

Operators can customize the screen with lower and upper covers featuring adjustable cleaning brushes, integrated collection conveyors for screened material distribution, and modular perforated or wire mesh screens.

Minister of Transport opens Hauerseter timber terminal Norske Skog at Saugbrugs, in collaboration with Nortømmer and Viken Skog have established the company Tømmerterminal Hauerseter AS, a privately owned railroad terminal for loading timber by rail. On Wednesday 19 January, the official opening was attended by Norwegian Minister of Transport Jon-Ivar Nygård.

The green transition requires that our inbound and outbound transport from the mills takes place with emission-free transport solutions. While we achieve lower carbon emissions and costs, there will now also be fewer heavy trucks transporting timber on our roads. A further development of the railway network and the terminal structure until 2050 will be a prerequisite for the implementation of the green transition in the industry and the fulfillment of Norway’s emission obligations in the Glasgow agreement, says Sven Ombudstvedt, CEO of Norske Skog.

Between 100,000 and 150,000 cubic meters of timber will be transported annually via the timber terminal, mainly spruce pulpwood to Norske Skog Saugbrugs in Halden. This amounts to somewhere between 2,500 and 3,750 timber truckloads a year.

The terminal at Hauerseter is located just north of Gardermoen. It is thus geographically well located compared to other timber terminals. Hauerseter will relieve the other terminals, contribute to a sharp reduction in the number of timber trucks on the roads and reduce the transport distance from the forest in the area around the terminal.

The background for the establishment of the terminal is, among other things, a challenging capacity situation at Norsenga timber terminal in Kongsvinger.

In addition, there are bottlenecks with driving a large number of timber trucks via Oslo.

First timber delivered The terminal, which is located at Hauerseter in Ullensaker municipality, has been established by a private initiative. Recently, we have put in place the necessary approvals from both Jernbanetilsynet and BaneNor to be able to load and transport timber by railway, says general manager Tor Henrik Kristiansen in Viken Skog.

The first timber transporters delivered timber to Hauerseter on 23 December, and the first timber train ran during January.

Rottne launches new cranes Rottne Industri AB, the forestry machinery manufacturer, is starting 2022 by launching two new cranes, the RK75 and RK310.

ur development work has been focused on simplifying service, improving operator comfort and increasing power,” Filip Wirbladh, machine engineer at Rottne Industri, says.

The Rottne H8D is a compact and flexible machine for standoperating thinning. The Rottne H21D is a heavy-duty option for final cutting. Nevertheless, they both have one thing in common: strong and robust cranes for the purpose – which are now even better.

“The fact that we choose to manufacture our own cranes and harvester heads for our machines is really very satisfying, and it makes us unique,” Tobias Johansson, CEO Rottne Industri, says.

The RK50 has been around since the start of the century. It will now be replaced by a new crane

with many improvements and innovations.

“We have been working on developing the RK75 for many years. In short, we have kept all the advantages on the older crane and added even more. The difference between the new and the old crane is very large,” Filip Wirbladh says.

“Generally speaking, everything is new, with the focus on the operator and service. With the RK75, we have developed a dynamic and durable product, where the operator will really notice a big difference.”

The list of improvements on the new crane is long. Everything from hardware to software has been looked over in detail, in order to develop a crane that will make both the work and the service easier.

stages,” Filip Wirbladh says. “In the long-term, operating a Rottne is also a financial win. Easier and simpler service and improved work in the forest saves time and thus, money.”

The crane on the Rottne H21D has also been fundamentally

updated. The RK250 is replaced by the RK310, which has been tested and developed over many years.

The advantages include that a new crane is gearless, direct driven, and has a slewing motor with greater efficiency, as well as has a stronger bearing between the first boom section and outer jib.

“Over the years, we have identified points for improvement.

With the RK310, we have taken the best from the earlier crane and developed something even better,” Filip Wirbladh says.

Both of the cranes have been test run for a long time with excellent results. “There are many years of development behind this.

That we can now mount them on our own machines and exhibit them to the market really feels very satisfying,” Tobias Johansson says, who sees a bright future for the Swedish company: “We have taken the right decision in our work with long-term goals and the market is certainly on our side. This is made clear by the great demand for our machines, both harvesters and forwarders.”

Canfor adds new sling sorters at North Carolina sawmil

anfor is investing in 50 new sorter top sling bay assemblies at their planer mill facility in Graham, North Carolina. This massive overhaul will update the existing sling sorter frame and replace worn equipment with modern sling

sorters from USNR. The new sorter top assemblies will be fitted to the existing structural steel frame, offering a faster and more reliable sorting operation.

Maximizing uptime and throughput are the primary objectives of this investment, and this sorter

upgrade will ensure Canfor’s Graham location continues to run at peak performance.

With delivery times top of mind, USNR was able to offer a project completion date that met the goals of the project. The startup is scheduled for Q3 of 2022.

Russian sawmill group Luzales makes third investment in TC continuous kilns Russian Luzales, one of the largest sawmill groups in the Komi Republic, invests in two more TC continuous kilns to its sawmill in Syvyktar.

It is the group’s third investment in Valutec TC kilns in five years.

Luzales became the first sawmill group in Russia to invest in TC continuous kilns with their order to Kyddzyavidz in 2017. Pleased

with the delivery and output of the kiln the company invested in another two TC kilns to Syktyvkar the following years.

At the Woodex exhibition in Moscow in December 2021 the company opted to invest in two more TC Continuous kilns to further increase drying capacity at the Syktyvkar sawmill.

Our TC kilns are the best of what today’s market in wood drying can offer. It’s the result of thousands of development hours during which we studied, evaluated, tested and reinvented every part of a type of lumber kiln which, in its original design, was first used back in 1927,” says Veretennikov.

The great technological leap forward in this new generation of TC continuous kilns is the individual temperature and air circulation control in different zones. Integrated simulator technology gives the operator high flexibility when choosing the dimensions of lumber for drying, thus optimizing processes and providing high capacity.

The total annual capacity of the two TC kilns is 140 000 cubic meters (59 300 MBF). The kilns are made of stainless steel and equipped with pressure frames for minimal deformation of the upper lumber layers and heat recovery. The delivery also includes Valutes´s control system for drying Valmatics 4.0. It is packed with intelligence that senses and adapts the drying process accordingly.

Integrated in the system is the Valusim simulator, which optimizes new drying programs with regard to capacity, quality and electrical energy consumption, in order to avoid costly running-in times.

Assembly of the kilns is scheduled to the final quarter of 2023.

Mayr-Melnhof Holz completes acquisition of Bergkvist Siljan Mayr-Melnhof Holz, one of the leading companies in the European sawmilling and engineered wood products industry, has received the necessary approval from the competition authorities, and thereby completes its acquisition of the Swedish sawmill group Bergkvist Siljan.

The Mayr-Melnhof Holz Holding AG group, located in Leoben, Austria, signed a contract in December last year to acquire the Swedish sawmilling group Bergkvist Siljan AB (publ.) from the investment fund ESSVP IV., advised by Orlando Nordics AB.

Having gained the approval of the competition authorities, the acquisition is completed as of 01 February 2022.

The new sites in Insjön, Mora, and Blyberg (all in central Sweden) complement the existing sawmills in Leoben (Austria), Paskov (Czech Republic), and Efimovskij (Russia) perfectly and move Mayr-Melnhof Holz, with around 5 million cubic metres of log processing capacity, up to number 3 of Europe’s largest sawmillers. For the first time in its 170-year long history, the group expects turnover to exceed one billion Euros in the 2022 financial

Sorting and dry sorting lines for Onega LDK modernization in Arkhangelsk Oblast In the past year 2021 JARTEK INVEST OY signed a contract for delivery of green sorting and dry sorting lines for Segezha Group which has begun a complete modernization of JSC Onezhsky LDK wood processing facility in Arkhangelsk Oblast.

He is a forester and has previously held positions such as district manager and forest manager. Per will take over as CEO of Kopparfors Skogar in the late spring of 2022.

In connection with Kopparfors Skogar’s formation in 2018, an agreement was reached with the then incoming CEO Lars-Erik Wigert that he will leave his employment in connection with his 70th birthday. Lars-Erik has led the company in a very meritorious way

during its first three years.

In the ultimate sign of equipment longevity and reliability, 25 years after the Toney Lumber Company in Louisburg, North Carolina installed its original rugged Fortress Technology lumber inspection metal detector – machine serial number 0001 – the 19-acre southern yellow pine saw mill has upgraded to a fresh model. The original inspection machine remained fully functional until the switchover.

fter processing roughly 500 million board feet during its 25-year lifetime, President of the family-run sawmill, Roger Melvin, cites business continuity as the primary driver for retiring the robust Phantom Lumber Metal Detector and making the new capital investment.

Come rain or shine, the long-lasting metal detector, located outdoors under a sloping roof, has endured heat waves, snow blizzards, driving rain and damaging hurricane winds. Yet the machine, which was only upgraded from analogue to digital in 2017,

every day as well as being exposed to the elements.”

Turning trees into logs

Sawmill retires first ever Fortress metal detector after 25 years service continued to reliably identify and kick out between 10 and 30 logs daily that presented with an embedded metal contaminant.

Metal contamination in wood can be very costly, notes Roger.

Aside from mitigating damage to saw blades - which can cost thousands of dollars each time to replace – the downtime caused by re-sharpening blades or production coming to a standstill can be an even bigger drain on the company’s production yield.

Protecting workforce welfare and safety is another critical rationale for identifying and removing metal contaminants from logs before processing. “When metal strikes the saw blades it can cause hazardous flying shrapnel which puts our employees in danger of injury,” explains Roger.

Inspecting 16ft and 12ft logs before debarking and processing up to 20 million board feet of decking, quality stair treads and stringers annually, Toney Lumber estimates that their upstream legacy metal detector paid for itself well within the first year of installation. Mostly by abating damage to expensive saw mill equipment. The company anticipates a similar, if not faster, return on investment with its newest Fortress metal detector installed in November 2021.

detector went in 25 years ago. He recalls: “The logs are so immense and everything’s shaking as the log is conveyed down the line and through the detector. The Toney Lumber team did an excellent job of installing the system, following all the instructions perfectly. This had a lot to do with the performance of the metal detector.”

In that moment, Steve never imagined a metal detector could last 25+ years in a sawmill environment. “It’s such a rugged application and being beaten up

On arrival in the Louisburg yard, all deliveries undergo rigorous visual inspection and weight checks at the scale house. The logs are then unloaded by a knuckleboom loader and separated by dimension.

Logs that don’t meet the quality specification because they are regarded too crooked or knotted are rejected and sent back to suppliers. Good logs are then sorted into two sizes, storing on decks in preparation for inspection.

During summer months logs are saturated with water to prevent a fungus forming and causing irreversible staining to the wood. Just like any other product application, this added moisture can affect the performance and sensitivity of metal detectors. To overcome this, Fortress is assisting the yard to establish wet, dry and mixed calibration settings.

The goal, explains maintenance

Inspecting felled timber logs before debarking, metal detection helps to mitigate machine downtime and costly damage to Toney Lumber’s sawmill equipment superintendent Chris Buchanan is to reduce false rejects. “The maximum sensitivity of this metal detector is 100 and we are currently operating at around six which is a fantastic result,” he states.

Finding metal in a log can be equally challenging. Especially given the mix of contaminants that can range from screws, spikes, signs from fences, barbed wire and even bullets.

When the metal detector picks out a contaminated log rarely will the entire log be discarded.

“Most of the time we can cut out or around the metal if it is close to the edge or end of the log,” notes Chris. Toney Lumber has one person allocated full time to performing this task. With up to 30 logs rejected daily for metal contaminants, the savings soon add up.

25th year is especially poignant for Gidman. “Toney Lumber played a big part in our development, taking calls from other customers to report on the functionality and performance of our systems.

Their endorsements have been a huge help for a young company when building an international reputation for product inspection technologies,” he recounts.

Reflecting on an exciting journey from literally hand assembling circuit boards for the lumber company’s metal detector at his kitchen table and building the detector in his family garage, the inspection pioneer concedes that he didn’t anticipate the machine lasting more than 10 years. “We were wrong. Nobody touched that system for over a decade. It lasted 21 years before it got its first upgrade from a Pinpoint to a Phantom, and it’s still functioning 25 years later” divulges Gidman.

Throughout the years of robust growth and expansions, Gidman always revels in recollecting this first ever install. “During the testing on site the alarm went off on the second log being inspected and the belt stopped. It was a bit surprising. Visually there was no metal present. Removed from the conveyor the log was cut open.

Sparks flew off the chainsaw,

confirming the presence of a metal fragment,” expands the Fortress founder. The slice removed continues to take pride of place in the company’s Toronto HQ. Gidman continues: “Hearing someone at the sawmill state that the system just paid for itself there and then was a ‘happy dance moment’. It was a good omen of things to come for Fortress.”

Roger and Chris reassert that their original metal detector would likely be plugging away for another few years. Yet, from a business continuity perspective their latest install, which looks, feels and operates in virtually the same way, provides the assurance they need to maintain a sustainable sawmill business.

“Metal detection supports our quality control and sustainability strategy by helping to mitigate machine downtime. It also helps to deliver a better yield for the timber and logs we purchase, predominantly sourced from local landowners. As a forestry certified company, any measure that helps to improve yield and stops valuable timber being wasted is a more sustainable practice,” emphasizes Roger.

A large-scale delivery to a new Junnikkala sawmill

artek Invest Oy delivers a modern sorting facility to Junnikkala Oy’s sawmill in Oulu.

The delivery consists of both green sorting and dry sorting plants with peripherals. Automation installation for the sorting system is delivered by Jartek AI Oy. The delivery is the biggest domestic project in the company’s history, being worth about twenty million euros. When finished, the need for pine and spruce logs of Oulu sawmill is about 700 000 cubic meters.

Both green sorting and dry sorting lines are equipped with the latest mechanics, automation and machine vision innovations. The

delivery will utilize solutions based on artificial intelligence. The plant represents modern technology, including automatic load and stick transfer equipment.

HewSaw Sweden to deliver saw machine with online system from SPM to Setra Skinnskatteberg

T HewSaw Sweden AB, a subsidiary of Finnish saw line supplier Veisto Oy, is set to supply a saw machine of the model HewSaw R200 1.1 V1 to Swedish wood industry company Setra’s production unit in Skinnskatteberg.

The machine, to be delivered to Setra at the end of 2023, will be fitted with SPM’s most sophisticated online condition monitoring system, Intellinova Parallel EN.

he robust and reliable sawing machine R200 1.1 V1 is designed for efficient sawing of small logs and has a feed speed of 70–250 m/minute. HewSaw Sweden has previously equipped a sawing machine of the same type with the Intellinova Parallel EN online system at the Vida Wood Nössemark sawmill in northern Sweden.

The sawing machine will be equipped with twenty-seven accelerometers of the DuoTech model as well as eight temperature transmitters, all connected to the online system Intellinova Parallel EN. With the help of DuoTech, the system utilizes patented HD technology for shock pulse measurement with SPM HD and vibration monitoring with HD ENV. The system provides very early warning of deteriorating machine condition, thus enabling good maintenance planning for maximized availability.

In a comment, Claes Backlund, CEO of HewSaw Sweden, said: “It feels good that we will deliver online monitoring to Skinnskatteberg as this gives us even better opportunities to follow up the situation with the customer.

That is completely on par with our self-developed maintenance system HewSaw MP.” Mikael Romlin, Mill Manager at Setra Skinnskatteberg, justified

the investment: “Maintaining a high level of operational reliability and avoiding unplanned stops is profitable for us both short and long term. We strive for proactive maintenance, with a larger proportion of condition-based maintenance where we can plan our actions. With the online system from SPM, we get entirely new conditions for this.”

Starting at system commission, SPM will manage condition monitoring of the saw line for five years via its remote service.

The sawmill staff can monitor the measurements via the Condmaster.NET web application on smartphones, tablets, or PCs. Measurement data can also be integrated into other monitoring and control systems using Rest API and OPC UA. The Finnish family business Veisto Oy plans and manufactures production lines under the HewSaw brand. About 80% of production is exported to other markets. In addition to Finland, the most prominent export areas are Sweden, the Baltics, North America, Russia, Central Europe, and the planted forest areas in the southern hemisphere. Veisto has over 250 employees.

The wood industry company Setra, owned by Sveaskog, Mellanskog, and some minor shareholders, has about 800 employees and a turnover of approximately SEK 4 billion.

ENZ’s new development of the HEM 922 DQ chipping unit combines the advantages of the previous HEM 821 DQ and HEM 841 DQ in one machine. To simplify matters, the machine will be marketed under the name “Chippertruck hybrid” in future.

The range includes the familiar two cab versions with mower glazing and as a Cobra (rotating cab).

Sören Stutz, Area Sales Manager for sales region Eastern Germany, has sold two machines of this size in his area in recent months. JENZ wanted to know from him why the power packs are so well received and what experience he has gained with them.

JENZ: Mr. Stutz, two JENZ large chippers in the sales region Eastern Germany within the last few months - a remarkable achievement! It takes quite a bit of material to properly and, above all, permanently exploit such powerhouses.

How do you think it is possible to

consistently use a hybrid machine economically?

Sören Stutz (SST): Unlike the previous Chippertruck hybrid HEM 821, the new HEM 922 has a genuine 900 mm draw-in height.

That alone makes this machine enormously flexible in terms of job handling. And that’s with everything from forest applications in shrub cuttings or soft logs to the processing of dense, heavy hardwood and industrial timber.

The latter in particular is either processed for material use (e.g, the paper and pulp industry} or is intended for energy use. And the powerful self-propelled machine scores with its productivity precisely in this segment. After all, throughputs of up to 500 m3 per hour are possible. In general, the motto is: get a lot done in a little time!

JENZ: The high throughput of 500m3 per hour is above average.

Critics might claim that further development of the professional chipper was merely about mass instead of class. But what about the quality of the woodchips produced?

SST: In my area in particular the machines are used for the production of coarse woodchips,

and always with the requirement that a low fines content is produced in the process. The D1 rotor, in this case with a size 38 pre-grip, produces high-quality woodchips.

Linked to this, a slatted screen basket prevents the formation of excess Lengths and ensures that the material flows off quickly thanks to its large screening surface. The hydraulic blower does the rest.

JENZ: Hybrid machines are faced with the challenge of meeting many different requirements. They are supposed to offer enormous performance potential, be low-maintenance and manoeuvrable at the same time, and all this with low fuel consumption. How does the most powerful self-propelled vehicle manage to combine all this?

SST: The driving force is the add-on motor. We used a Caterpillar C18 with an output of 812 hp with emission level V to

power the chipper by itself without AdBlue, by the way. This also means that the motor is spared when it is not chipping. e.g. during transport. In addition, the 32-tonne chipper surprises users with its enormous manoeuvrability thanks to the MAN 8x4-4 carrier vehicle, so that even operations away from the industry are not a problem. Those who need even more flexibility can also switch to AGRO tyres.

Away from industry the fuel tank offers the option for long working days without refuelling with a capacity of about 900 litres.

During chipping we are then well below 0.3 litres fuel consumption per cubic metre with both engines.

Of course, only if the wood is wellpositioned (laughs).

JENZ: You yourself have been a chipper driver and now view the machines from a completely different angle. What is there to highlight from the operator’s point of view?

JENZ: Whether Chippertruck hybrid with mowing glass or Cobra cab, impressive and powerful are probably the keywords that characterise both models well.

Interview How would you describe the most powerful JENZ self-propelled machines in one sentence?

SST: Both machines are absolutely employer - friendly! (laughs) With the high impact both hybrid machines deliver there is simply no time for a break.

SST: Definitely the screen basket and knives change! Unlike other chippers, we can quickly and easily change the screen basket with the machine’s own crane, depending on the application, thanks to the screen basket storage on the engine housing roof. Especially in industrial applications, you notice again and again how important changing the knives quickly and easily is. The steps up to the rotor housing have

been optimised and the whole process takes about a quarter of an h0ur thanks to the professional tool system: from carrying up the practical knife pockets, to opening the swivel tool box and replacing the knives.

As a driver, the cabin is also of course crucial. However, subjective feelings also play a major role here because each cabin offers its own advantages. The driver gets more space and storage in the cab with

Creating a productive working day There are some ingredients that are essential for creating a productive working day in the forest

F

or the forest machine manufacturer Komatsu Forest, taking care of the operator ergonomics and making the machine work as efficiently as possible on every level are two focus areas that are high priorities when developing and refining harvesters.

Smart Crane – a new option for Komatsu harvesters An easily operated harvester crane is important for ensuring a productive working day. Every movement that can be simplified contributes to increased production and, ultimately, greater profitability.

In November 2021, Komatsu Forest introduced Komatsu Smart Crane for harvester, and with that took crane control to the next level – the crane is controlled with a single lever movement, from the

main boom all the way to the tip of the telescopic arm. The result is a faster and more precise crane operation as well as a more relaxed and efficient operator.

Komatsu Forest presented its first parallel crane for harvesters back in 1999. Smart Crane is an extreme extension of this concept, with the crane moving as a single unit.

Precision and responsiveness are two of the greatest advantages of Smart Crane. The operator can easily steer the head where they want it in smooth, precise movements, contributing to a more relaxed way of operating the harvester. A relaxed operator can stay focused for longer and work more productively throughout the entire working day.

Another Smart Crane advantage is the need for fewer lever movements. The automatic control of the telescopic arm makes it even easier to steer the crane exactly where you want it – a single lever

movement brings the crane from full reach all the way back to the machine. This provides better ergonomics for the operator and helps to conserve energy level throughout the day.

In 1984, the Komatsu 901 was launched; the world’s first singlegrip harvester for thinning. And with the 901, Komatsu launched its stable Komatsu concept, which even today remains relevant and industry leading.

Essentially, these machines are based on the well-proven concept of a rigid articulated joint and a swing axle that when combined with the cab’s tilt cylinders provide superior stability, even with the head perpendicular to the machine or while repositioning the machine.

This is a concept that many decades later is still the most effective in terms of stability.

machine’s centerline. In order to counteract the instability this would otherwise cause, two stabilizing cylinders on the swing axle act as a counterforce, locking the harvester in a horizontal position.

The force acting on the stabilizing cylinders comes from the pressure in the machine’s tilt cylinders, which are located under the cab. The pressure from each tilt cylinder transfers the force to the corresponding stabilizing cylinder.

Together with the automatic cab leveling, this ensures harvesters with great stability. With the automatic cab leveling the cab always keep horizontal no matter of the terrain. The operator always sits in a comfortable upright position, reducing strain.

Fuel efficiency An important prerequisite for effective harvester operations is a machine that easily maneuvers all kinds of forest terrain.

Komatsu harvesters have high ground clearance thanks to the smart design of the portal bogie, Komatsu Comfort Bogie. That, in

combination with good tractive force and an efficient transmission – directing power where it’s needed while at the same time keeping the fuel consumption down – ensures Komatsu harvesters can keep the production at a high level.

3PS stands for three-pump system and ensures that the operator has the capacity to do several operations at the same time, with maximum hydraulic power; for example, slewing the crane, feeding the logs and maneuvering the machine, all while keeping the fuel consumption low.

The secret lies in the two-circuit system, where the hydraulics for crane and harvester head can be connected or run separately, depending on what best suits the situation. Simply put, the operators can harvest more in less time, while still reducing energy losses.

Last but not least, the harvester cabins are spacious with large windowpanes that give a good overview over the work area. The whole cabin, together with the crane, can rotate 360° for maximum reach within the work area.

30% FASTER 2000T has increased performance and drivability compared to its predecessor 928A. It feeds at 4 m/s, which is an improvement of 30%. The 2000T’s feed roller motors have a power of 280cc, which is less than its predecessor, which had 365cc.

Access to the Timber Stand

All access, all year Hard wearing and able to handle difficultto-reach environments, size reduction and land clearing machinery is adapting

F

or some years, now, International Forest Industries has been monitoring the evolution of harvesting technology as the need for mechanized solutions on steep slopes has become acute. In response, we have seen harvesters, feller bunchers, forwarders and skidders take on advanced technologies to ensure stability and efficiency on inclines.

It makes sense that the technology being used to make the roads going to the stand on steep inclines would also need to take on such advances, but for a long time we have seen manufacturers continue to focus almost exclusively on increases in capacity.

This year’s review, however, unveils a migration toward a more

nuanced approach to steep-slope adaptions, alongside the usual press forward toward evermore indestructible units with greater capacities, which remains at the heart of the functionality for access-forcing machines.

Dirt and gravel roads that facilitate the access of heavy equipment to timber stand, require an increasingly higher bearing capacity and a uniform, consistent and compact surface. In addition to traditional restoration by scarification and milling and the subsequent placement of stabilized material, FAE machines have introduced innovative

technology that simplifies the work considerably, speeds up execution and drastically lowers costs. Its advantage is evident in the product’s load-bearing capacity and durability.

The FAE SFH is a versatile solution for tractors as a stone crusher, forestry tiller and forestry mulcher. The SFH is a heavy-duty attachment for use with tractors up to 500 horsepower (HP version).

It can grind trees up to 45 cm in diameter, crush stones up to 35 cm, and run at a depth of 40 cm underground. The transmission with side gearboxes converts engine power into speed and torque. Multiple tooth options combined with an industry leading rotor design, make the SFH one of a kind.

Once created, the road has to be kept clean. Managing forests and woods is a complex job because often, the areas to be worked are harsh or inaccessible.

Therefore, one must be able to count on maximum productivity and reliability from your equipment. Whether working on

trees, shrubs, stumps or rocky terrain, FAE has a solution that provides market-leading strength and maximum reliability. To deal with all situations in the best way possible, FAE offers exceptional experience and an extensive range of products.

For example, the BL4/EX mulcher for large excavators has Bite Limiter technology. It mulches logs up to 30 cm in diameter and comes in two working widths: 135 cm and 160 cm. The BL4/EX/VT is ideal for handling and removing vegetation in wooded areas, especially for jobs that require a large shredding capacity and speed.

When working in these applications, it is common to be in rough, difficult and hard to access environments, in which the quality and reliability of the machinery involved can make a substantial difference in profitability, especially if it also has a high working capacity.

The FAE PT-300 is the ideal tracked carrier for the most difficult tasks, whether managing woods and forests or creating firebreaks near electrical lines, oil and gas pipelines. Indexator is adding the XR350 to its XR program Indexator from Vindeln in Sweden – the world’s biggest manufacturer of hydraulic rotators – is adding to its compact rotator range with the powerful XR350.
