EDITOR’S COMMENT A short Christmas wish list

A

s we were putting together our December-January edition of International Forest Industries, our sparse office – the Omicron variant has meant the government in the UK has once again advised we work from home, where possible – was preparing to shut down and enjoy some well-earned time with family.

To say this little period was an unsettled time would be both right and wrong. It was unsettled in the sense that a new variant was once again making planning tough and causing the stress levels among many to rise.

But it was hardly unsettled in the sense that it did not represent a departure from what has become the norm. We have been fighting COVID-19 with a multitude of scientific and anti-social measures for coming up to two years and so, in most respects, a challenging Christmas period was, simply, more of the same.

The concern for our office was therefore centred on whether we would have to endure another eventless, and largely travel-less, 12 months. For me, my letter to Santa Claus – or Sinnterklaas or Saint Nicholas or Kris Kringle or whatever variation you prefer where you are – was therefore short.

Dear Santa, Please may I have a year in which I can travel to Elmia or Trä & Teknik or any of the many North America-based events and start to reengage with the forestry sector.

‘COVID passports’, masks and a level of distancing in some places and certain settings, but it would avoid lockdowns and travel restrictions that mean businesses – including events businesses – can plan and get on with things.

Events are central to what forestry businesses do. With contractors and sawyers often in fairly (or very) remote settings, the ability to come together to see the latest in equipment and put in orders is critical. Just as important is to sit with peers and share information so as to learn from one another – publications like ours help facilitate this sharing of knowledge at a high level, but there is nothing like sitting with an industry friend and chewing the fat for the benefit of both.

From the equipment supplier perspective, this is where new kit is publicised, order books are filled and relationships for future deals are built. Events are a logistical undertaking that challenge teams, get employees out of the office, and give them an opportunity to bond.

On top of all that, it is the relationships across suppliers, contractors, media and government that make this industry fun and keep us all sane.

So, for me, if nothing else, I’m hoping Christmas and birth of the New Year brings with it – if not a return to normality – the emergence of a slightly different and curbed reality, but one where we can be together as an industry, once again.

Editor, IFI. From my perspective, it has just been too long. It is presumably much the same from a broader industry perspective. We, of course, understand the seriousness of the COVID-19 pandemic but with vaccines and boosters rolling out, and the need for these to adapt to what will be a steady stream of variants – in line with regular flu – we hope that we are approaching the point at which we learn to live with COVID-19.

That is likely to mean inconveniences like

Ponsse opens new service centre in Tomsk, Russia Ponsse has invested more than €2 million in the construction of a new service centre in Tomsk, West Siberian, Russia. The grand opening of the new service centre took place on 11 November 2021.

Large stocks and an efficient logistics system guarantee customers short service times and fast spare parts deliveries.

The investment aimed to create a modern service centre with a current repair area and a logistics centre with a spare parts warehouse. This training centre offers skills on PONSSE harvesters and forwarders, and an in-depth knowledge of the structure and operation of technology. In total, the centre employs 26 people.

Enhancements have been made to the previously released Smooth Boom Control (SBC), as well as Improved Seat and HeatedVentilated Seat (HVS) and Premium Radio that is XM ready.

Updated Smooth Boom Control (SBC) improves the amount of pressure needed to operate a function, giving the operator more feel and control of the movement, especially during fine metering.

This allows for a wider tuning range for individual functions and improves the set-up for multiple Operator preferences and skill levels.

The 17-inch H Series Battle Ax has a depth gauge design that Loftness said is proven to perform better than any other bite-control rotor. According to the manufacturer, the partially reduced material passes smoothly to the secondary cutting chamber behind the front bumper, where it’s processed further before being discharged toward the ground.

Navigator Group relies on Raumaster’s wood processing expertise One of Portugal’s largest pulp and paper producers, the Navigator Group, has ordered a new wood processing plant for its Figueira mill from Raumaster. The parties do not publish the exact transaction amount of the ordered entity, but it is significant for Raumaster.

The ordered plant will process eucalyptus wood as its raw material. Raumaster has invested significantly in the development of eucalyptus debarking and chipping technology over the past 10 years.

The project to be delivered is already the third cooperation project with Navigator Group in the last three years. The new wood processing plant will be commissioned during 2023.

The project significantly

employs Raumaster’s planning and project management in Finland.

The key devices are produced in Raumaster’s extensive partner network. Local companies in Portugal also play a major role in subcontracting the plant to be supplied.

“This large-scale deal is a great sign of customer satisfaction that we have managed to build on in our previous projects with Navigator Group. At the same time, this confirms that our development contribution to the development of eucalyptus processing technology has also been noticed in the customer base”, says Petri Lounasaho, Head of the Wood Processing Department.

Changes in management at Komatsu Forest in Brazil Komatsu Forest have announced changes in top management of Komatsu Forest Ltda Brazil. The company’s current managing director (MD), Mr Felipe Viera has decided to leave the company in pursuit of other professional challenges in a different business segment. Mr Juergen Munz is temporarily taking on the role as MD for Komatsu Forest Brazil.

Mr Munz comes from Germany and has worked for Komatsu Forest since 2007, since 2018 he is MD for the German sales company. Mr Munz assignment in Brazil is an interim solution until the company has recruited a new managing director locally.

“I look forward to work together with our Brazilian team. The Brazilian market has a strong, sustainable growth and Komatsu Forest has strong, long-term partnerships with our customers.

My main focus will be to find the new MD for the company, and I will do my best to make the transition

between Mr Viera and the future MD as seamless as possible,” Munz explains.

Komatsu Forest is also reinforcing its local product planning function. The range of forest machine models based on Komatsu crawler base machines, like PC200, PC350 and D61, increases and becomes more and more purpose built for forestry applications. Komatsu Forest will therefor reinforce the product planning function for Komatsu Crawler based products sold in South America.

Mr. Sandro Soares will be the new Product Manager, starting from 1 December 2021, based in Brazil. Sandro will work together with the Product Planning team of Komatsu Forest head office in Sweden.

“Sandro has many years of experience working for Komatsu Forest Ltda, as a Service Manager and with Design engineering.

This, in combination with his large

network of market contacts will be valuable in the new role,” Munz continues.

Mr Viera who is leaving the company concludes “I’m extremely grateful to Komatsu for the opportunity given to me and honored to have served alongside a such committed team. I’m proud of Komatsu’s trajectory and certain that the company’s future will look bright. Komatsu has an inquisitive

Volvo CE tests world’s first high-lift tele-operation over 5G Remote precision in its grasp An important aim of this research project is to explore exactly what is required from an operator perspective in making teleoperation a user-friendly and efficient experience. Because each load of timber can be so varied – from an unwieldly pile of heavy logs through to just a few short pieces of wood – it is vital that the lifting process is carried out with pinpoint accuracy and incredibly precise handling.

Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) is the first in the world to trial a remote-controlled High-lift wheel loader over a 5G network in a complex forestry application – in a bid to develop safer, more productive timber processes and explore its potential as an enabler for automation.

The unique research project Remote Timber is a collaboration between Volvo CE and the telecom operator Telia, timber and paper manufacturer SCA, Mid University Sweden, Skogforsk and Biometria.

This week’s tests at SCA’s timber terminal in Torsboda, Sweden, have demonstrated that it is possible to tele-operate a Volvo L180

High-lift wheel loader, hundreds of kilometers away. And by using a closed 5G network, low latency has proven to be a major advantage – allowing operators to perform the sensitive process of picking, loading and organizing logs remotely.

Tele-operated forestry is expected to deliver improved productivity by allowing one operator to work across multiple – and sometimes isolated – sites around the world. It is also expected to make it both safer, by removing humans from potentially hazardous environments, and more sustainable, through more efficient logistics flows as the loading and unloading of timber can also be done during the night.

Christian Spjutare, Advanced Engineering Program Manager at Volvo CE, says: “We expect teleoperation to open up far greater opportunities for operators than is currently available. Sometimes it can be difficult to hire people in timber terminals because of their remote locations. But tele-operation allows people to work from any location, no matter the distance, making it a more desirable work setting, with the added advantage of more efficient and sustainable work logistics.”

Ponsse to invest in operations in Chile Ponsse Group will in the future be responsible itself for the sales, spare parts and service business in Chile through its newly established subsidiary Ponsse Chile SpA. To this end, Ponsse and its local retailer F.C. Ventas Y Servicios Limitada (hereinafter “FC Ventas”) have on 5 November 2021 signed an asset purchase agreement related to Ponsse’s forest machine operations, according to which Ponsse Chile SpA will purchase FC Ventas’ service centre located in Chillan, including its spare parts stocks and maintenance vehicles, subject to the fulfilment of certain conditions. The aim is that PONSSE services in Chile will transfer to Ponsse Group by the end of Q1/2022.

The employees of F.C. Ventas will join Ponsse Group as established employees after the transaction has been completed. Ponsse has prepared a comprehensive integration plan that will ensure a positive continuation of the local business and sufficient orientation for the employees.

The transaction has no impact on the previous guidance, which

suggests that Ponsse Group’s operating result is estimated to be significantly higher than in 2020.

Currently, Ponsse’s business in Chile amounts to approximately ten million euros. The purchase price of the transaction between FC Ventas and Ponsse will not be made public by mutual agreement. Furthermore, the purchase price has no impact on the valuation of Ponsse. The purchase price will be paid in cash subject to the fulfilment of certain conditions set for the completion of the transaction. Ponsse will fund the acquisition from its cash assets.

PONSSE forest machines have a market share of about 40 per cent of cut-to-length machines in Chile, and there are 150 PONSSE forest machines in the country. Further machine deliveries are expected as cut-to-length harvesting grows in popularity.

Securing service quality and continuity Juho Nummela, Ponsse Plc president and CEO, says that FC Ventas has built a strong foundation for continuing the development of the service

selection.

“We want to provide our customers in the growing Chilean market with the best support possible in the form of excellent products and services that ensure the continuity of their business.

We have expanded our subsidiary network with care and always based on customer needs. Our range of products is a good fit for the local conditions, and we believe in the growth potential of PONSSE products and services in Chile,” says Nummela.

This change will not interrupt the local PONSSE services, which include machine sales, maintenance, spare parts services and training for local customers.

The FC Ventas service centre in question was completed in 2015 and it operates in Chillan in the middle of Chile’s forested region.

Ponsse first started import operations in Chile in 2014, but the first PONSSE forest machines were already working in the country in the 1990s. The sustainable annual harvesting volume has grown steadily thanks to the trees’ quick life cycle and well-managed forest plantations. In 2019, Chile’s wood

harvest for sawmills, pulp mills and veneer industry applications was 47.6 million cubic metres. The country’s forest industry is based on forest plantations, and 28 per cent of their harvesting is currently based on the cut-to-length (CTL) method.

Ponsse’s Vieremä factory currently exports 80 per cent of its production, and PONSSE solutions are sold and serviced by a network of 12 subsidiaries and 44 retailers.

In addition to its international subsidiaries, Ponsse Group includes the technology company Epec Oy in Finland. Ponsse Chile SpA will join Ponsse’s other South American subsidiaries in Uruguay and Brazil.

Scania and SCA develop first 80 tonne electric timber truck

In another step towards a fossilfree society, SCA and Scania are together developing the first electric timber truck with a technical capability of up to 80 tonnes total weight. The vehicle is a sustainable transport solution enabled through another close cooperation between Scania and a progressive customer.

It is possible to drive longer distances with heavy electric transports. Scania and SCA are proving that with a new battery electric vehicle capable of total weights of up to 64 tonnes on public roads and 80 tonnes on private roads. The electric truck will transport timber in the Swedish region of Västerbotten, between SCA’s terminal in Gimonäs and its papermill in Obbola outside Umeå, starting already in 2022.

For SCA, which is Europe’s largest private forest owner and maker of sawn wood products, packaging materials and pulp, electrifying road transport is an important part of work to reduce its environmental impact. Every year, SCA transports about 8.5 million

cubic metres of wood to industries, utilising 265 timber trucks in collaboration with 87 haulage contractors. ”The cooperation with Scania is an important way for us to jointly find innovative solutions for sustainable transport. Electric timber trucks will be a strong contribution to SCA’s work with sustainability, where we are part of the solution for a fossil-free world. By running just one electric truck between Gimonäs and Obbola, we can reduce our carbon emissions by about 55,000 kg per year,” says Hans Djurberg, Head of Sustainability, SCA. “As we now demonstrate that it is also possible to electrify very heavy transport, there is a growing need to build out charging infrastructure for heavy vehicles.

SCA can further increase our contribution to help fight climate change, but a serious effort must be made to build out charging infrastructure. This responsibility ultimately falls on the government,” says Jörgen Bendz, Head of Wood Supply, SCA. The vehicle solution that Scania is developing, in close collaboration with SCA and research institute Skogforsk, is a part of the shift towards sustainable transport, which Scania has long advocated for, not

least together with progressive customers. ”The key to reaching zero emissions in transport is electrification and we will get there together with customers and other stakeholders that share our values.

Partnerships like this one with SCA, where we are early out and demonstrating what is possible, is a clear sign of a change of pace that is needed for us to be fossil free and deliver on the targets of the Paris agreement,” says Fredrik Allard, Head of E-mobility at Scania.

At Scania, future solutions are simulated together with different partners and through deep analysis. When it comes to SCA, Scania is developing a vehicle that is optimised for SCA’s specific transport assignments.

Lesosibirsky LDK No.1 has completed procurement procedures for modernisation equipment Lesosibirsky LDK No.1 JSC (Segezha Group, MOEX: SGZH, a subsidiary of Sistema PJSFC) has concluded the entire scope of contracts for the supply of equipment to build new and modernise the existing production facilities at the mill. The cost of the equipment exceeds RUB 3 bln. First supplies are expected to begin in the second quarter of 2022.

‘We have completed procurement procedures and signed a contract for a 64-pocket sawn-logs grading line with Nordautomation OY (Finland).

Contracts have also been signed with AS Hekotek (Estonia) for the supply of a 58-pocket dry sawn timber grading and piling line and three pellet production lines.

SECAL S.r.l. (Italy) will supply an additional nine charge dry kilns.

Three kilns from this manufacturer started operation at Lesosibirsky LDK No.1 in October of this year as part of the first stage of the investment project,’ explains Artem Samukhin, Director of Development at Lesosibirsky LDK No.1 JSC. Additionally, there is work in

progress regarding the design of a salvage bark waste-fuelled water boiler at LDK No.1, as well as the design of the area for receiving, grading and storing sawn logs. As a result of the technical upgrade, the capacity of Lesosibirsky LDK No.1 will increase by 8%, i.e., to 650 thous m3 of export sawn timber per year. At the same time, the output of the highest-quality finished products will increase by more than 7%, and the production of pellets will almost double, to 210.5 thous tonnes per year.

The ambitious modernisation programme at Lesosibirsky LDK No.1 aims to improve the company’s operational efficiency and create a closed-cycle production facility. The total project investment is about RUB 6.5 bln (VAT included).

Green expansion for James Jones & Sons Hetton site James Jones & Sons is expanding facilities at its Hetton site following planning permission approval for a 55,000 sq ft site redevelopment.

The business will expand and redevelop its premises into a green facility that will include the installation of a biomass boiler.

James Jones & Sons (Pallets and Packaging) engaged the services of Building Design Northern (BDN), a Sunderland based architectural, structural and civil engineering firm, to design the plans for its new facility, which will aide its growth and further support the company’s key ethos of developing a fully sustainable supply chain service.

The new space will support the pallet-making process and will also allow the firm to install a new biomass boiler, which will be fuelled by James Jones’s own

recycled timber, enhancing the firm’s environmental credentials, reducing carbon emissions and further strengthening the company’s contribution to a circular supply chain.

OneFortyOne to invest $11 million in Jubilee Sawmill OneFortyOne, Mount Gambier’s largest private employer, has committed to investing over $11 million in its Jubilee Sawmill over the next two years.

Jubilee Sawmill General Manager Paul Hartung said the modern manufacturing investment was a continuation of the reinvestment program that started in 2016.

“OneFortyOne has invested close to $40 million since purchasing the mill in 2018, on state-of-the-art technology projects such as Sorter Bins, a Lucidyne Scanning System, reducing boiler emissions and upgrading to Continuous Drying Kilns,” Hartung said.

“This most recent commitment will extend to an equipment and technology upgrade for Drymill A, replacing and modernising equipment as it reaches end of life.”

Hartung said the new equipment will be manufactured in New South Wales under a licensing agreement, a first for Australia.

“We are really pleased we can be part of this initiative.”

Interfor to acquire EACOM Timber Interfor to acquire EACOM Timber Corporation, adding one billion board feet of lumber production & expanding regional & product diversity

INTERFOR CORPORATION (“Interfor” or the “Company”) (TSX: IFP) has announced that it has reached an agreement with an affiliate of Kelso & Company (“Kelso”) to acquire 100% of the equity interests of EACOM Timber Corporation (“EACOM”).

Transaction Highlights EACOM is a leading lumber producer in eastern Canada, with operations across Ontario and Quebec, including: • Seven sawmills with a combined annual spruce-pine-fir (“SPF”) lumber production capacity of 985 million board feet; • An I-Joist plant with annual production capacity of 70 million linear feet;

• A value-added remanufacturing plant with annual production capacity of 60 million board feet; • Rights to access approximately 3.6 million cubic meters per year of responsibly managed and internationally certified fibre supply; and an office in Montreal.

The purchase price is C$490 million, on a cash and debt free basis, which includes C$120 million of net working capital.

In addition, Interfor will assume EACOM’s countervailing (“CV”) and anti-dumping (“AD”) duty deposits at closing, for consideration equal to 55% of the total deposits on an after-tax basis. As of September 30, 2021, EACOM had paid cumulative CV and AD duties of US$150 million.

Strategic Rationale The acquisition is consistent with Interfor’s growth-focused strategy as a pure-play lumber producer, increasing Interfor’s total lumber production capacity by 25%. In addition, the acquisition further builds upon Interfor’s already geographically diverse operations, adding significant scale in a new region. Eastern Canada is one of the major lumber producing regions in North America, with highly competitive log costs, a desirable SPF product mix and a supportive investment environment.

On a pro-forma basis, Interfor’s total annual lumber production capacity will increase to 4.9 billion board feet, of which 46% will be in the US South, 16% in the US Northwest, 20% in eastern Canada and 18% in British Columbia.

The addition of the EACOM business will also provide an expanded opportunity set for potential future lumber-focused growth in eastern Canada, given its well-established systems, infrastructure and team.

The business will operate under the Interfor banner, but Interfor will maintain all of EACOM’s key operating leadership and employees as well as its office in Montreal, Quebec to ensure continued regional support for the operations going forward.

From a product perspective, the acquisition adds lumber-adjacent offerings to Interfor’s portfolio of operations, with the addition of an I-Joist plant and a value-added remanufacturing plant.

Consumption of I-Joists, like other engineered wood products (“EWP”), is closely tied to new housing construction and demand continues to be robust, while supply has been limited due to constraints in the availability of suitable flange stock for its manufacture. EACOM supplies the majority of the flange stock for the I-Joist plant from its own operations, in the form of machine stress rated lumber, enabling significant control over the key inputs and a better ability to manage production levels. As a result, EACOM’s I-Joist plant has sustainably increased production by approximately 40% over the past three years and is well positioned to take advantage of the positive market dynamics across the EWP sector.

The investment is a further step in Holmen’s strategy to grow the wood products business and contribute to the green transition. This will increase the production at Iggesund Sawmill by 20 per cent as well as adding construction timber on top of its joinery products range.

To develop the wood products business is a natural extension of forestry and an important dimension in Holmen’s strategy of owning and adding value to the forest. The investment will enable the sawmill to switch from lower grade joinery spruce to construction timber in both spruce and pine.

This will increase the value added and improve the market mix by increasing the share sold to Scandinavian builders’ merchants.

Small log line upgrades will improve recovery, reliability, and throughput

T

he White Mountain Apache Timber Company (WMATCO) mill in Whiteriver, AZ is investing to update its small log line system. The mill is located within the Fort Apache Reservation, where nearly all the raw timber is sourced. The tribe operates both large log and small log mills.

This upgrade for the small log mill will install new hold down rolls and new spiked carry over rolls on the infeed of the line, and replace the worn components.

These investments will bring the equipment up to current standards, improve reliability and throughput,

The upgrade will increase both the volume of renewable plantation pine logs that can be processed and the yield per log, creating a workplace of the future, with high tech machinery improved accuracy, safety and job security. The planned investment is in addition to major upgrades completed two years ago and the construction of Tasmania’s first Wood Plastic Composites manufacturing facility announced earlier this year for the Bell Bay site.

In addition to 25 contractor jobs during the capital upgrades and expansion, Timberlink expects that this project will create 18 new permanent full-time jobs at the facility for the next generation. It is estimated that the Timberlink Bell Bay manufacturing facility supports

approximately 600 direct and indirect jobs in the region.

Setra invests in Malå to double its production Setra is doubling production at its facility in Malå, Västerbotten – a decision taken by the Board of the wood products company at its latest meeting

he investment will provide a real boost for Malå and the wider region, while also making Setra as a whole more competitive,” says Setra’s CEO Katarina Levin.

Setra’s Board has decided to invest around SEK 390 million in the Malå sawmill, which will increase production in the first phase from the current 160,000 m3

per year to 350,000 m3 per year.

“It’s incredibly positive for the Board to greenlight this modernisation programme for the site, which will both sharpen our competitiveness and drive up the value added. The investment will enable us to produce high-quality products with superb accuracy and precision. The whole production line will be ultramodern, almost doubling output,” adds Katarina Levin.

The facility in Malå will have a new log intake, a new saw line, an upgraded trim saw and a new drying unit. This new unit will deliver higher-quality products, more efficient production and a lower climate footprint through smarter processes compared with the current facilities.

Every log is unique Until now it has not been possible to trace what happens in the sawing process at the individual log level. Instead sawmills have been forced to get information about logs and planks in bigger batches. HS Timber Group & Forestcape to build new sawmill in Gobernador Virasoro, Argentina

T HS Timber Group, together with its Belgian joint-venture partner Forestcape, intends to build a new sawmill in Gobernador Virasoro, Argentina

he investment will amount to approximately $100 million and the sawmill is expected to create 280 direct jobs. The total employment impact, including the upstream and downstream sectors, is estimated at over 700. The plant is designed to process small diameter pine logs (Pinus taeda and Pinus elliottii), which will be sourced exclusively in the region, from sustainably managed areas.

After commissioning, the plant has a processing capacity of 500,000 m3 of saw logs/year. All the sawn timber is dried, and some of it is also planed. The bi-products of sawing are pelletised (EN A1plus) or sold to local biomass plants. The entire product range is designed for export. The target markets are worldwide, e.g. China, the USA and Europe. Some of the machine orders have already

been placed: Linck (chipper line), Springer (round and sawn timber manipulation in sawmill and planing mill), Microtec (scanner), Valon Kone (debarker), Gilbert (planing line), Mahild (timber drying). Commissioning is planned for mid-2023.

As in all mills of HS Timber Group, emphasis is placed on the comprehensive use of raw materials. In accordance with the principles of the circular economy, 100% of the thermal energy required is generated in the plant, as green heat. The biomass either originates from timber processing or is locally sourced.

The Argentinian joint-venture operates under the name Acon Timber. HS Timber Group contributes its industry expertise in wood processing and sales. The Belgian partner Forestcape has

many years of experience with sustainable forest management in the region where the sawmill will be built.

Acquisition of the Swedish sawmill group Bergkvist Siljan The Mayr-Melnhof Holz Holding Group, based in Leoben, Austria, has signed an agreement on December 17th, 2021 to acquire the Swedish sawmill group Bergkvist Siljan from ESSVP IV, advised by Orlando Nordics AB.

T

his continues the consistent expansion and growth strategy of the Austrian wood processing group. In 2022, for the first time in its 170-year history, the company will generate sales of over 1 billion Euro. The closing is expected to take place during the 1st quarter of 2022, subject to approval of the relevant competition authorities. It has been agreed not to disclose the purchase price.

Mayr-Melnhof Holz, one of the leading companies in the European sawmilling and engineered wood products industry, will grow with this acquisition its lumber production capacity by approximately 50 % to more than 2.7 million cubic meters of sawn timber per year.

The new sites Insjön, Mora and Blyberg, right in the middle of Sweden, complement the existing sawmills in Leoben (Austria), Paskov (Czech Republic) and Efimovskij (Russia) perfectly and create a starting point for the market entry of the Mayr-Melnhof Holz Group into Scandinavia.

Dramatic rise of European logs into China China imported 30% of its total volume of softwood logs from Europe in 2020 and 2021, thus surpassing supply from Russia and North America.

European softwood logs were practically non-existent at Chinese ports five years ago. However, a combination of a never-ending hunger for more wood in the country, reductions in shipments from previously significant trading partners, and an oversupply of timber in Europe have altered the log flow into China over the past four years.

New Zealand, Russia, and the US accounted for almost 75% of

the total import volume to China in 2017. However, throughout 2020 and 2021, there were sharp declines in supply from Russia and the US, while shipments from Europe and Latin America rose.

During the first nine months of 2021, almost 80% of all imported logs came from New Zealand, Europe, and Latin America.

The European entrance into the Chinese market has been dramatic, increasing from less than 500,000 m3 of softwood logs in 2017 to an estimated 14 million m3 for the entire year in 2021, according to the Wood Resource Quarterly.

volume is currently 30%, with Germany being the second-largest supplier to China, following New Zealand.

German shipments have surged from about 200,000 m3 of logs in 2018 to 3.8 million m3 in 2019, and estimates indicate import volumes may reach over 10 million m3 in 2021. Log imports from the Czech Republic grew rapidly in 2019 but have since levelled off, with the estimated volumes in 2021 likely to be substantially lower than in the two previous years.

Shipments from Germany and the Czech Republic have accounted for the vast majority of

the European logs entering China.

Several other countries have increased their presence in the past three years, including Poland, France, and Slovakia.

Europe’s oversupply of logs is beginning to diminish, and domestic demand is increasing.

Thus, while the rise of European exports to China has been dramatic, the trend is unlikely to continue, making the high of almost five million m3 exported in the 4Q/20 a likely peak.

The figure ‘Rotation error histograms …’ shows the results of a test on 50 logs in a sawmill where the R-TRAC system is currently installed. The blue represents rotation error of a log turner system without the use of R-TRAC. The red is the same system but with the R-TRAC. The curve is clearly a lot narrower with the R-TRAC, reflecting big gains on recoveries.

The working principle is quite simple. A set of data is acquired for every inch the log advances, with each set of data containing images of the log’s surface and geometric data to allow a rotation measurement to be calculated for each pair of consecutive sets of data. This gives a rotation value per inch of traveling.

The cumulative log rotation measurement is sent to the control system PLC and the PLC will use these measurements to control the log turner positions using a PID loop to turn the log perfectly each time.

Junnikkalan saha Oy is investing €75 million in building one of Finland’s largest and most modern sawmills in Oulu. When ready the sawmill will have a capacity of 350 000 cubic meters sawn timber and 70 jobs will be created directly and 200 indirectly in the Oulu region.

“We’ve worked together with Junnikkala very well for many years, and we see their choosing us again as a great honor” says Mikko Pitkänen, CEO Valutec Oy. Valutec will deliver three TCcontinuous kilns to Oulu including two traverse systems.

“We installed a TC kiln at our sawmill in Kalajoki 2019 and has good experiences from it. It offers high capacity and adapts well to the changes in production. It’s faster and more efficient way to dry wood with high quality and with lower energy consumption”, says Kalle Junnikkala.

“Today, we’re selling TC continuous kilns in markets all over the world. It’s the result of thousands of development hours during which we studied, evaluated, tested and reinvented every part of a type of lumber kiln which, in its original design, was first used back in 1927,” says Mikko Pitkänen.

The great technological leap forward in this new generation of TC continuous kilns is the individual temperature and air

circulation control in different zones. Integrated simulator technology gives the user great freedom when choosing the dimensions of lumber for drying, thus optimizing processes and providing high capacity.

The TC dryers to be delivered to Junnikkala has ten drying zones and will handle all drying needs for the sawmill. The kilns are made of stainless steel and equipped with pressure frames for minimal deformation of the upper lumber layers and heat recovery. The delivery also includes Valutes´s control system for drying Valmatics 4.0. It is packed with intelligence that senses and adapts the drying process accordingly. Integrated in the system is the Valusim simulator, which optimizes new drying programs with regard to capacity, quality and electrical energy consumption, in order to avoid costly running-in times.

Sustainability is an important issue for Junnikkala who strives to minimize its´carbon footprint.

One of the goals of the project is to minimize the environmental impact and secure bioenergy for the city of Oulu and industry. As a part of it, the new sawmill will be using traverses instead of traditional fork-lifts.

“Junnikkala wants to be an example how the climate change can be restrained and by using an automatic traverse system we

decrease our carbon footprint and production cost per manufactured cubic meter”, says Kalle Junnikkala.

Lumber drying is a qualitycritical, energy intensive part of a sawmill’s processing operation, and as quality and environmental requirements increase, it is subject to ever greater attention.

“The new TC continuous kilns combine high capacity with continuity, which brings great advantages in terms of energy efficiency, adding heat recovery and a traverse system to that makes it a very energy efficient solution”, says Mikko Pitkänen.

After the investment, Junnikkala will have three sawmills with a total production close to almost 800,000 cubic meters of sawn timber and further processed products annually. About 80 percent of finished products are estimated to be exported.

Production binds almost one million tonnes of carbon per year to sustainable wood products, making the company one of Finland’s most significant carbon sinks.

The assembly of the TC kilns will start in the spring of 2023.

BID Group’s SmartTool revolutionizes cant positioning Optimal cant positioning can significantly increase production performance and profitability

D

uring the primary breakdown, cant positioning is critical. The optimal position of the cant enables the execution of the optimizer solutions and ensures the best realization.

Occasionally, the mechanical components are unable to perform the required cant positioning. The challenge is to identify the causes quickly before they impact product quality or cause production problems.

Often, cant positioning problems are difficult to identify and are due to poor mechanical alignment, broken parts or components, incorrect settings or poor calibration.

The Primary Breakdown SmartTool, developed by BID Group’s team, is a software application that reveals unsuspected cant positioning problems in real time. This SmartTool empowers operators to intervene promptly before errors or defects impact quality or operations.

realization on sideboards and dimension offsets of all cutting tools, while dimension variation, taper along the length, skewed opening face, and bevel (nonparallel cut) are monitored. It also triggers an alert when a cutting tool error is identified.

Unique and revolutionary closed loop system BID Group’s closed loop system is unique on the market. Dashboard, reports, and alerts for easy monitoring and analysis A dashboard provides an overview of the primary breakdown operation status and a report can be generated for all defects monitored.

The configuration of alerts is done easily in the optimization software. In addition to the basic alert definition, operators can customize the alert message and include tips for troubleshooting or possible solutions. They can also define multi-conditions to avoid false alerts when the scanner is dirty.

Primary breakdown SmartTool and real sawline incidents The Primary Breakdown SmartTool is installed on numerous sawlines in America and has proven to be indispensable to identify poor mechanical alignment, broken parts or components, and incorrect settings.

In one case, mechanical alignment was the cause of an unknown sawline problem. In fact,

one of the OLI cylinders had an offset of 0.400’’. Therefore, the cant positioning was not accurate, and this had a direct impact on the production value for one month. The mechanical alignment problem was identified once the Primary Breakdown SmartTool was installed. After fixing the error, the cant positioning resumed to an acceptable 0.010’’ automatic infeed offset.

In another incident, during production an OLI saw guide was damaged by a log. This caused the bandsaw to cut the wood two hundred thousandths off the

dimension target, so it had a direct impact on the production quality.

The problem was identified by the Primary Breakdown SmartTool and displayed in the dashboard, but it was not noticed by the operator.

Fortunately, an alarm was triggered automatically, and the operator became aware of the situation.

In another sawline event, during the canter cutting tool cylinder calibration, the minimum cylinder position setting was defined at 2 in’ in the PLC and 1.9 in’ in the optimizer. This error caused the 4 in cants to be cut one hundred thousandth bigger. Since this

Setra makes major investment in Bergslagen

S

etra is expanding drying capacity at Heby and Hasselfors – a decision taken by the Board of the wood products company at its latest meeting.

“The investment is part of the development strategy for Setra in Bergslagen,” explains Setra’s CEO Katarina Levin.

The investment in both highcapacity drying kilns totals SEK 100 million.

“The new drying kilns will enable us to improve value optimisation and boost efficiency, which will strengthen Setra’s competitiveness,” says Jonas Fintling, Mill Manager Setra Hasselfors.

Setra Heby’s Mill Manager Jan-Erik Vik agrees, adding that the investment will also improve the work environment in Heby, as it will mean replacing some of the older equipment.

The increase in drying capacity at the sawmills in Heby and

Hasselfors is an important element in the ongoing development of Setra’s operations in Bergslagen.

Earlier this year, the decision was taken to invest in a new saw line in Skinnskatteberg, and last year a new rip saw was installed at the sawmill in Nyby.

“Setra is investing heavily in greater refinement of wood at resource-efficient production units in the Bergslagen area. This is positive from a sustainability perspective, as it helps to lower the climate footprint of our production and to ensure that we manufacture greener and more climate-smart products,” says Katarina Levin.

Examples of investments include CLT and components at Setra’s new factory in Långshyttan, planed construction timber from the new trimming and planing plant in Hasselfors and new x-ray technology in Kastet, Nyby and Skinnskatteberg. In total, Setra has invested more than SEK 1 billion

Another example of green investment is the company Pyrocell, which Setra owns jointly with Preem. Pyrocell manufactures bio-oil from sawdust. The bio-oil is then used as a renewable raw material at Preem’s refinery in Lysekil, where it is mixed with petrol and diesel. Pyrocell’s facility is integrated with Setra Kastet in Gävle. Together, Setra and Preem have invested over SEK 400 million in this exciting venture.

Jenz has adapted and extended the additional ‘Professional Line’ package for its chippertruck series

enz presented the additional ‘Professional Line’ package for the first time at the end of 2019.

Specially designed for the driver, it includes targeted solutions in terms of maintenance, ease of use and comfort.

The release found considerable success: the concept proved itself with the Jenz HEM 583/HEM 593 Chippertruck series and is now being extended to the HEM 922 series in the hybrid chipper-truck segment. Operators are enjoying the advantages of the individual equipment components and finding out what effects the changeover to the exhaust gas standard and the

new MAN TG3 chassis have on the add-on package.

Conversion of the exhaust emission standard has no consequences The Euro 6d emissions standard has been in force since September 2019. Until recently, exemptions allowed the deployment of 6c vehicles, but this is now a thing of the past.

“The change in the emissions standard has no consequences for the Professional Line package,” says Hans Heinrich Hermeier, Jenz CEO.

Only the combi cooler had to be modified, as the standard MAN cooler is not suitable for the dusty environments in the chipper area due to its closely-meshed slats.

Changes in the cooler area had been necessary from time to time in the past.

“MAN is using a modified cooling system for the current changeover to Euro 6d,” explains Lars Egbers, Chippertruck designer at Jenz.

“Our solution: water and intercooler air coolers with coarse slats sitting on top of each other ensure sufficient cooling capacity as well as low maintenance since the slat is continuous.

“During development, we benefited from a lot of experiential knowledge from the past.”

You can’t get more professional than that A new intelligent cab concept, power-packed 510 hp and lower fuel consumption – these are all points scored by MAN’s new TG3 chassis.

An air-conditioned driving and working position, as well as additional storage and stowage options, will provide more comfort in the future. At the same time, assistance systems such as the distance-controlled cruise control integrated at the works increase safety on the road. The reduced fuel consumption is a clear plus in terms of economy.

“From the manufacturer’s perspective a consumption advantage of up to eight percent can be seen in the TG3 compared

with the TG2,” says Egbers.

“If we combine the advantages of the new TG3 with those of the Professional Line package we can quite clearly say: you can’t get more professional than that,” Hermeier said.

The combination of rear blower and Professional Line works “When we launched the Professional Line package in 2019, we only wanted to offer it in conjunction with the tried-andtested centric blower,” explains Hermeier, relaying that this was because the practical ladders and the sieve basket holder at the rear would otherwise have to be omitted. The latter in particular offers more flexibility and greater application possibilities.

“However, the customer base that continues to insist on the arrangement of the blower at the rear is larger than we originally assumed,” he said. Consequently, the Professional Line package has been restructured so that both chipper trucks in the HEM 583/ HEM 593 series with centric blower

and with rear blower benefit from the advantages of the package.

The sales manager pointed out the minimal changes: “Use of the rear blower does mean that the screen basket holder takes up a different position and the climb to the screen basket housing is also somewhat less comfortable.

“Nevertheless, the combination of rear blower and Professional Line package works very well. True to the motto ‘all in one, everything done’, the customer doesn’t have to make any compromises and the driver doesn’t have to do without anything.”

The Professional Line package on the Chippertruck hybrid is excluded from this subject since only the centric blower is used here.

“We are professionals – our customers are professionals.

The professional package will be successful if we listen to our customers and adapt it accordingly when necessary,” Hermeier said.

When reaching climbing limits, telescopic extensions push the machine forward and over edges. On the steepest slopes, all four wheels can be steered independently, this results in a small turning radius and allows crab movement of the machine.

The crane and the cabin are one unit, the crane is fitted behind the cabin and turns continuously.

This gives an excellent view for the driver to the harvester head – Woody WH50- 1 or WH60-1 – fitted at the end of the crane.

The reach of the crane (10 m) is remarkable with one telescope extension and integrated hydraulic hoses. The Highlander is powered by a water-cooled IVECO 6-cylinder turbo diesel engine and has three hydraulic pumps, two for driving and one for the crane and harvester. The electronic control system (Konrad Touch Control, KTC) is also manufactured in-house.

There is a six and four-wheel version of the Highlander, and each machine has as standard a strong shield, and an optional clambank or a load space for the logs, which has recently been introduced. This feature is very useful to improve the productivity, by taking on several work steps usually done by other units with one machine.

The log-load space can be rotated and swiveled. This innovation is not only very practicable on the Highlander, it can also be mounted on standard harvesters of other manufacturers. There is also a synchronized winch with double function mounted on the machine.

This is a useful feature to secure the machine in steep areas or to winch trees to the machine.

s with all Quadco attachments designed over the past 32 years, the most recent designs are always application-oriented and focused on reliability, low maintenance cost, and maximum productivity.

Nowadays, the needs of the forest industry are much diversified. Felling equipment and technology have to cover a wide range of applications like biomass harvesting, thinning, scheduled cutting of short cycle tree plantations, final felling of mature stands, exfoliated insects ridden or burnt forests, etc.

First and foremost, on high speed disc saw heads, Quadco remains an industry leader.

Traditional logging in North and South America, Europe, Russia and Australia continue to make good use of the extended line of Quadco disc saws starting with

each pair activated with only one cylinder with timing bar for faster accumulation and shorter cycles.

Models are available for both boom-mount and front-end mount, ie. rubber-tyred feller bunchers.

For even greater small-stem accumulation, there is the 7000 Bunching-Series. From Eucalyptus plantations in Brazil and Blue Gum stands of Australia and Asia, to energy-wood shortcycle plantations in Europe, the 7000 bunching heads allow high productivity and lower operating cost per cubic meter.

The 7000 series comes either with a disc saw or with a shear for areas where the use of saws is limited due to fire hazards or extremely rocky conditions or very abrasive sandy soils. All 7000 series heads are equipped with the patented multi-junction accumulator arm to allow the optimal use of the tree accumulation area.

All boom-mounted heads can be equipped with an optional 40° or 360° lateral tilt, allowing bigger tree piles to be made without compromising productivity.

The B-Series Disc Saw is designed for bigger stem diameters. Each of the four arms is activated by a cylinder as opposed to one per pair. The wide-arm spread works as a lever for better handling of heavy and tall timber.

Another category is the Intermittent Heads, models QU2400 and QU2900, equipped with a ring saw that starts and stops for better tree control and larger cutting capacity at 61 cm and 74 cm (24 in and 29 in).

For those preferring a ‘bar & chain’ over a disc, Quadco offers four fixed-mount bar saw models to choose from. From the QB3200, a thinner head well adapted to selective cutting, to the heavy duty

The John Deere 944K Hybrid wheel loader has a hybric-electric drive system that improves performance by 17%, compared to machines with conventional systems

Latest wheel loader models leverage smart technologies to reduce TCO A staple on many jobsites, the wheel loader has undergone several innovations in the past few years – and will see even further updates in the near future.

I

t’s been a busy 2021 for wheel loaders as several large manufacturers have released new models, including the new G-Series from Case; Caterpillar’s 980, 982 and 992 machines; and Doosan Infracore North America’s DL380-7, which joined the company’s -7 Series of wheel loaders.

The machine that loads and carries an array of materials and aggregates is a workhorse for contractors, but manufacturers are starting to capitalize on opportunities to improve wheel loaders’ efficiency and productivity, along with operator safety and comfort.

CONEXPO-CON/AGG 365 talked with industry manufacturers to read the pulse of the wheel loader market and discover the upgrades that contractors can take advantage of.

Increased efficiency and productivity Doosan debuted the DL-580-5 wheel loader, with an operating weight just under 80,000 lbs, at CONEXPO-CON/AGG in March 2020, and since then, the manufacturer has refreshed it and the models in its -7 Series.

Aaron Kleingartner, product and dealer marketing manager for Doosan Infracore North America, said the 580-7, which has a bucket capacity of 8.4 cubic yards, is a “true two-pass machine,” which means it fills up trucks in two loads – not 2.5 loads like some smaller 46 International Forest Industries | DECEMBER 2021 / JANUARY 2022

wheel loader models.

“From the cycle-time perspective, [2.5-load machines] can wreak havoc in a day having that extra half-load; you sometimes end with overloaded trucks and underloaded trucks,” Kleingartner said. “That true two-pass [580-7 machine] has been a great addition to our lineup, and the -7 Series machines, in general, are the next generation of the product.”

That confidence in the wheel loader’s steady two-pass performance means it’s easier for jobsites to manage and maximize time, fuel, logistics and efficiency.

An ongoing trend with equipment is the shift to more fuel-efficient machines with lower emissions, Kleingartner said, and Doosan’s engineers have been tasked with meeting various emissions regulations.

Although complying with those mandates is necessary,

Kleingartner said that adding productivity features to their machines while ensuring they’re more fuel-efficient.

The result is what Doosan calls “situational awareness technology,” which was introduced with the -7 Series of wheel loaders, and it senses the speed, power and hydraulic needs of the machines, according to Kleingartner.

He said the functionality’s job is to make minor adjustments when needed to reduce the hydraulic output – this makes sure the engine doesn’t bog down while staying within its prime working range.

“That type of technology just helps make the machine more efficient, more productive, and at the end of the day, [it] burns less fuel, and it makes the operator more productive [so] they can meet their targets throughout the day,” Kleingartner said.

John Deere is modernizing its fleet of wheel loaders with its own efficiency measures.

Luke Gribble, solutions marketing manager at John Deere, said the manufacturer’s hybridelectric drive (or E-Drive) makes the company’s wheel loaders stand out, even though the technology has been operating with the 644 X-Tier mid-sized and 944K hybrid large models for a few years now.

“It’s something that provides a lot of those benefits: [being] more efficient, more productive, easier for the operator to us,” Gribble said.

The 644 X-Tier wheel loader comes with an E-Drive transmission system that delivers “premium performance and efficiency,” according to John Deere’s site, and the 944K model has a hybridelectric drive that recaptures energy to slow the machine when the operator lets off the accelerator, a feature that lessens the load on the engine and reduces fuel consumption.

Gribble said that these systems help contractors extend the lives of their wheel loaders and avoid extra maintenance costs such as tire replacements and machine damage.

“The overall total cost of ownership of that machine is going down substantially when you compare it to a conventional machine,” Gribble said. “And while I mentioned that our machines [with hybrid-electric systems] have been out there for a few years now, we’re just getting customers that are starting to look at those reallife opportunities and seeing those cost advantages.”

John Deere’s studies on the efficiency of these systems pays out big dividends in terms of performance, Gribble said: The 644 X-Tier model can consume

up to 10% less fuel than one of John Deere’s machines with conventional drives, and the 944K has a 17% fuel advantage over conventional machines.

And electric wheel loaders are abundant of late: In August, LiuGong introduced a new electric, remote-controlled wheel loader that runs on a 5G network, and in June, Volvo announced the L25 wheel loader would be available in the U.S. this year.

Ensuring the safety and comfort of wheel loader operators

‘Transparent bucket’ said to eliminate blind spots in front of wheel loader bucket

At the end of the day, contractors are the ones operating these machines, and wheel loader manufacturers have them top of mind when it comes to implementing new features.

“We want to make sure that the features are going to benefit the operators so they can stay comfortable in the cab all day long because they’re often working longer shifts,” Gribble said. “And it’s important to keep the operator happy because it’s a challenging job.”

Kleingartner said that after the customer feedback Doosan has received over the past several years, Doosan’s 12 wheel loader models come standard with heating, air conditioning and fully closed cabs – with the latest -7 Series wheel loaders coming with 14% more glass area for better operator visibility in the work area of the machine.

“Operator comfort has been paramount the past five to 10 years in helping to build the things that customers have been asking for,” Kleingartner said.

One of Doosan’s newest innovations for operator safety and ease is the industry-first “transparent bucket” technology.

Normally, Kleingartner said, a wheel loader’s bucket can impede an operator’s visibility at times, but this “unique” new optional

functionality “basically gives you a complete view in front of the machine like the bucket isn’t even there,” he said.

Kleingartner explained the feature as an electronics system with multiple cameras mounted at the top and bottom of the front of the machine with a monitor inside the cab that displays a superimposed image in real time using a curved projection method.

The technology is a boon for jobsite safety, as well as productivity, as it removes all obstacles from the operator’s field of vision while enabling a forward perspective through the monitor during loading and unloading.

First teased at CONEXPO-CON/ AGG in March 2020, a similar feature from John Deere for all its wheel loaders called Advanced Rods and Virtual Mirrors will debut in the near future, according to Gribble.

He said two additional cameras set up on the rearview mirrors to provide increased visibility around the machine, and the manufacturer will also have a more optimized radar system on the back of the cab, which will alert operators while they back up – much like how modern cars beep at drivers while in reverse to warn of obstacles.

“You’re going to have

enhanced operator awareness and understanding some of those areas that might be hard to see from the cab,” Gribble said.

Along with the advanced system for visibility, John Deere has also redesigned its wheel loader cabs with standard features such as more leg room, automatic temperature control, updated HVAC systems that optimize airflow and more user-friendly monitors.

Optional cab upgrades include heated seats.

“Those [upgraded features] might seem minor, you’d think … well, I’ve got all that in my car, so why wouldn’t I have it in my wheel loader?” Gribble said. “There are so many of those comfort features that we want to make sure that you have [because operators] probably spend more time in that machine than they do in their car a lot of times.”

The fact that these improvements came from customers and contractors is not lost on Gribble “Really what we do for our advanced products is continue to talk to customers on a daily basis and allow them to kind of tell us what the direction is where we need to be going in the future,” he said.

The test will therefor both explore how to mature the technology and gather vital feedback from the operators on the optimum placement of those cameras for handling precision.

Volvo CE has for the past few years been exploring the potential for tele-operation across a variety of segments from mining to urban construction, with this project testing the technology in its most challenging application yet. By remote-controlling processes like timber lifting – which are currently too complex to be fully automated – tele-operation becomes an important enabler for automation, allowing for a more gradual integration of automated processes for customers.

“This research project gives us an opportunity to test our teleoperation platform in a new application with high precision requirements and learn how the system needs to be designed to meet industry needs. Insights from partial manual and teleoperated management enables us to also take steps towards automation in more complex processes”, Christian concludes.

A ground-breaking new eucalyptus head - the Komatsu X164E Komatsu Forest is introducing the Komatsu X164E, a robust head specially developed for efficient eucalyptus harvesting.

A high-performance feed system ensures high productivity which, combined with smart solutions for reducing maintenance time and costs, makes the X164E a profitable head. The standout feature is the fact that the conventional chainsaw is replaced by hydraulic shears, which also benefit production and safety, such as with the absence of a chain to maintain.

ith its brand-new design, the Komatsu X164E has been specially developed to efficiently harvest eucalyptus.

When developing this head, Komatsu Forest’s engineering team put aside all existing head designs for softwood trees and instead focused solely on the needs and conditions of eucalyptus harvesting.

“To minimise losses in production time, we established strict requirements for the debarking function.

With the Komatsu X164E, the ambition is for at least half of the stems to need only be fed through once, from felling cut to the end of the stem, also known as one-pass debarking,” says Tobias Ettemo, Product Manager at Komatsu Forest.

The effective debarking is due in part to the head’s specially designed feed system, which has a very high degree of contact between the debarking knives and the stem.

The design is based on four angled feed rollers which cause the stem to rotate inside the feed path, efficiently debarking and delimbing the stem at

the same time. The head also shreds the bark into shorter lengths, minimising process disruptions at sawmills and greatly benefitting the growth of new stands.

The main difference compared to Komatsu’s other heads is that the X164E slices rather than saws through the stem. The head is equipped with extremely powerful hydraulic shears, with broad, sturdy blades, that easily and effectively slice through each stem.

“This solution reduces service and maintenance costs, including downtime, while the hydraulic shears also offer great advantages in terms of machine and operator safety,” says Tobias Ettemo.

For excellent reliability, the Komatsu X164E is equipped with several smart solutions, such as protected hose routing all the way from crane tip to head valve and from head valve to roller motors. This means less downtime and reduced spare parts costs, greatly boosting profitability. The underlying concept of using hydraulic shears instead of a saw bar also helps to keep

maintenance costs down, as there are no chains, bars, sprockets or saw motors to replace, and no need for saw lubrication either.

The Komatsu X164E can be mounted on an excavator or a wheeled machine.

“All the development that we have put into this new head had had the primary focus to reduce the total cost of ownership, that is what really matters in the end. And we are very happy to say that we have seen proof of substantial reduction of TCO with the X164E.” Ettemo concludes.

With the Komatsu X164E, eucalyptus harvesting is taking an innovative step forward.
