EDITOR’S COMMENT Climate shines light on foresters’ responsibility The world is in turmoil over the climate challenge. When the Paris Agreement was signed in 2015, it signalled a sense of urgency not previously present. That was thought by many to have been a step change in the priorities for governments around the world but regulation and voter-driven rhetoric and action have continuously escalated.

The Paris Agreement called for policy that would keep temperatures rises to 1.5 degrees and no more than 2 degrees. Less than six years later, policies from government and industries that aim for anything above 1.5 degrees are not seen as credible.

We have visited this topic in these column inches before, but it is worth a second trip across the climate terrain based on its relevance, but also with the COP26 meeting in Glasgow scheduled in a couple of months, which is likely to see leaders confront the reality that too little is being done for countries to meet legally binding commitments.

COP26 conversations will feature the forestry sector heavily. For a start, forestry and agriculture from a land-use perspective are major emissions contributors, admittedly this is largely from industrial agriculture requiring mechanised harvesting and land clearing – essentially the problem created by clearing forests.

Most forestry conversations will rather point to the need to preserve large carbon sinks such as the Amazon and the continued shift toward sustainable and renewable construction materials – namely wood – and away from carbon intensive steel making – the mining sector with its bulk mining of iron ore and metallurgical coal for the steel-making process, and then the steel making process itself, contribute some 12% of global emissions.

For responsible forest owners and contractors, this is an overwhelming opportunity. Very little felling of old-growth forests is still carried out today; at least from a legal perspective.

Meanwhile, progress is being made at an impressive speed to improve the durability and strength of wood products so they can be

substituted into buildings that would usually use steel.

The challenge for forestry is therefore a difficult one – how does the industry respond to a likely increase in demand over the next 30 years so it can play its part in the road to Net Zero, while not increasing its own emissions profile in line with that greater activity?

Better engines, will of course, play a key role and the forestry sector’s leading suppliers have made admirable progress in this regard over many years, now. Not only are engines releasing less harmful emissions per litre of fuel consumed, but the overall efficiency means less fuel is used in the first place. This achieves the handy double of fewer emissions and lower costs.

But from an International Forest Industries perspective, I can’t help wonder whether we should be doing more. When you look around the world at the changes being made in some key climate-sensitive areas, forestry appears to lag. I’m thinking primarily of electric vehicles (EV), where even the traditionally slow-moving mining sector can point to operations that are running completely on battery-operated haulage, loading and drilling units.

I will stop short of a call to arms for industry suppliers, but nothing would give me greater pleasure than to have just cause to run an EV harvesters or feller bunchers or forwarders or skidders or chippers technology review.

I can’t imagine we are too far away from that reality, as governments increase carbon taxes making investment in EV technologies a necessity. Until then, my pen will remain poised.

One of the largest solar parks in the Nordic region on the roof of Komatsu Forest Long-term sustainability is a central focus area when Komatsu Forest builds its new factory outside Umeå, in Sweden. An important piece of the puzzle in this work is the 19000m2 solar park on the roof of the factory, which will contribute to carbon neutral production. In connection with the summer solstice on 21 June, the installation became operational.

In Umeå and northern Sweden there are good conditions for using the sun as an energy source. The city had 2,053 hours of sunshine last year and solar radiation is high without it being too hot, which could mean energy losses.

“We have actively strived to find a long-term sustainable energy solution for our new property where solar cells are an important component in achieving a production that is CO2-neutral,” says Martin Ärlestig, Global Production Manager at Komatsu Forest.

The supplier of the solar park is Svea Solar.

“The green transition is a must, and the sun is an obvious part of the solution. We are very pleased to be a part of the fact that Komatsu Forest is now getting one of the largest solar parks in the Nordic region, and that solar energy production is also growing in northern Sweden. We are convinced that interest in solar energy will continue to increase now that more people see that it actually works here in our more northern parts of the country as well,” says Erik Martinson, CEO and founder of Svea Solar.

The solar park on Komatsu’s roof consists of 7154 solar panels covering almost 19000m2, i.e. about two thirds of the roof’s surface. This also makes it one of the largest in the Nordic region.

The solar panels tilt 10 degrees and stand in both an easterly and

westerly direction to also capture the morning and evening sun. The stands for the panels are held in place on the roof of a total of 65 tons of ballast and a total of as much as 60 km of electrical cable rings on the roof. From the roof installation, the power goes down to 22 inverters located in the installation channel under the roof.

The power is then diverted into a switchgear before entering the general power rail for the factory.

The impressive installation is estimated to produce 2,625,000 kWh of solar electricity, covering much of the total demand for the Komatsu Forest factory. With the new solar park, the surplus will also help to increase the share of sustainable energy production in the electricity grid.

Positive from a sustainability perspective is also that the solar cells have a long lifespan and are estimated to be able to produce electricity for over 30 years.

The official start of production at Komatsu Forest’s new factory is 9 August.

Scanmeg releases TS5 The latest development from the Scanmeg portfolio of products is an upgrade on the hugely successful TS4 scanner

T

he TS4 has been on the market for a while and is a key part of Scanmeg’s scanning range, representing one of the most advanced sensor systems and scanners available to sawmillers, regardless of the specific production challenges being faced down.

The 3D Laser technology is the described as the most efficient developments from Scanmeg, exceptionally proficient in working on digital profiles and shapes of objects.

The product series traces and applies a laser line to the object.

Using an array camera, points are detected along the line to describe the profile and shape of the object.

The TS5 is a single-laser line canner that is fast, compact and robust. This line of products is ideal for measuring the shape of a tree, cant, boards or any dimensional object by the principle of triangulation.

Ambient light no barrier The TS4 was a highly advanced

product but limited when the process was exposed to ambient light. The next logical step for Scanmeg, therefore, was to offer that same quality product without the light-issue barrier.

“Scanmeg’s TS5 is that new generation of products we were aiming for,” the company stated.

sent on demand to other devices to optimize the application.

“The TS5 could improve the processing line at many sawmills, adding a layer of convenience and resilience, while at the same time building on the fundamental scanning technology that has proven itself in the market over so many years.”

Segezha’s modernization of Karelian Wood Company In order to streamline the integration of the enterprise into the Group, a modernization schedule was drawn up for the main production lines, including the replacement of selected wornout components and assemblies.

Technical specifications for the renewal of the dry sorting area and main sawmill equipment were drawn up as well. By the end of 2020, all the major automation components of the enterprise’s key production areas—the sawmilling and packaging areas—had been updated. A number of selected worn-out components and processing line assemblies were replaced. The transport loaders were replaced with in-house equipment.

More than RUB 100 million ($1.3 million) has already been invested in the plant’s modernisation.

Moving forward, the company plans to expand its production capacity and secure further investments to the tune of RUB 350 million ($4.8 million). The details of the contracts pertaining to this process are currently being worked out by the parties involved.

The majority of the work involved is scheduled for May–June of 2022: the first group of sawmill machinery, step conveyors for log feeding, and the waste transport system will be replaced.

Sawmiller AB Karl Hedin invests in six batch kilns In order to increase its drying capacity while maintaining a high level of quality, the privately-owned sawmill group AB Karl Hedin is investing in six batch kilns for its Swedish sawmills in Säter and Krylbo. The investment increases the group’s drying capacity by approx. 77,000 cubic meters (32,630 MBF).

“We have had good experiences working with Valutec on previous deliveries. They offer a well thought-out design and an excellent control system. By continuing with Valutec as our main kiln supplier, the total solution is the most cost-effective”, says Michael Forsberg, project manager at AB Karl Hedin.

AB Karl Hedin is one of Sweden’s largest privately-owned sawmill groups with three sawmills in Bergslagen and two in Estonia.

The group’s sawmill in Krylbo is Sweden’s largest producer of small diameter logs. The refined range is called “Krylbokubb” and is a small diameter range with a standard length of 3.05 m. Säters Ångsåg saws pine lumber of the highest quality. The raw materials are thick pine lumber, Säter blocks, and veneer pine for the production of furniture and paneling of high quality.

Valmatics 4.0 is the only control system for lumber drying that combines simulator technology with adaptive control, and enables

optimization of the capacity, quality and energy consumption simultaneously.

The assembly of the new kilns and the upgrading of the control systems will start in March 2022.

Sierra Pacific Industries & Seneca plan to combine forest products businesses Sierra Pacific Industries (SPI) and Seneca has announced that SPI plans to acquire Seneca and affiliates, combining two complementary, family owned forest products businesses with strong historical roots on the West Coast. Founded in 1953, Seneca operates a 175,000-acre sustainably-managed tree farm, sawmills, and a biomass plant in Oregon. SPI, a leading lumber producer that manages over 2.1 million acres of timberland in California and Washington, as well as manufactures millwork, windows, and renewable energy.

The combination of two highly complementary businesses with deep expertise in forest products will result in increased efficiency and significant benefits to employees and customers. “Aaron Jones and Red Emmerson are both icons of the wood products industry. They were also friends and had a deep mutual respect for each other as industry leaders,” said Seneca CEO Todd Payne,

in reference to the founders of their respective companies. “This proposed transfer makes so much more sense given the companies provide complementary products, and have shared family values and company culture.” Both SPI and Seneca have a strong focus on sustainable tree management, also managing their timberland for thriving wildlife, healthy watersheds and soils, and worldclass recreation. As Payne explains, “At Seneca, we grow more than we harvest annually. We have 92% more timber on our land today than we had 25 years ago. SPI also grows more than they harvest.

Under their forest management plan they expect to have more large trees on their timberlands 100 years from now than they have today.”

LSAB Suomi will deliver the sawmill built in Rauma the blades it needs and will take care of necessary services. The value of Metsä Fibre’s Rauma sawmill investment amounts to approximately EUR 200 million, and the new unit will produce around 750,000 cubic metres of pine sawn timber annually. The new sawmill will be a worldwide forerunner in technology and efficiency. For example, the use of machine vision and artificial intelligence in different stages of the sawing process is a significant new development.

Similar technology is not yet in use anywhere in the sawmill industry.

The construction of the sawmill is progressing as planned, and production will begin in the third quarter of 2022.

Resolute Forest Products invests $50 million in its sawmills Resolute Forest Products Inc. has announced additional capital investments of $50 million in its wood products operations to support its continued growth, and it confirmed the repayment of all amounts outstanding under its revolving and term credit facilities, reducing debt by $180 million in the 2Q. “The cash generated with our lumber platform in these strong lumber markets provides the opportunity to share benefits directly with shareholders,” said Remi G. Lalonde, president and CEO. “We’re also enhancing long-term value by improving our company fundamentals with investments in high-return and quick payback lumber projects in three key regions for Resolute: the Abitibi in Quebec, Northwestern Ontario and the Southeast U.S. What’s more, we’ve removed a

material amount of debt from the balance sheet with the further $180 million repayment in 2Q, leaving as our only remaining debt the $300 million of unsecured 4.875% senior notes due 2026, and our liquidity stands at around $850 million.

The additional $50 million in wood products investments include: • $ 22 million to modernize equipment at the Senneterre (Quebec) sawmill, which will enhance overall efficiency and productivity of the Abitibi regional operations; • $ 13 million at the Thunder Bay / Fort William First Nation (Ontario) sawmill to increase capacity by up to 40 million board feet with new equipment and modifications to the fiber flow; and

• $ 15 million at the Glenwood (Arkansas) and Cross City (Florida) sawmills to support fiber optimization and overall efficiency. The Cross City investment will also increase capacity by up to 20 million board feet.

Each of these projects will serve to generate additional value from Resolute’s wood products segment across market cycles.

The improvements at the U.S. sawmills build on the previously announced investments associated with the restart of the El Dorado (Arkansas) sawmill.

The company anticipates completing all the projects by the end of the 3Q 2022. Accordingly, it is raising its 2021 capital investments guidance from $100 million to $125 million.

More space for sawmill technology: Serra Maschinenbau GmbH undergoing major expansion Serra Maschinenbau GmbH in Rimsting on Lake Chiemsee supplies mobile and stationary sawmills around the world. The successful company is growing steadily and is gaining further production space with a new hall, in order to efficiently realize all future orders.

An old warehouse on the company site had to make way for this. The ground-breaking ceremony for the 560 m2 production hall took place on June 1, 2021, with Serra anticipating investments in interior fittings and machinery of around 430,000 euros. “The new building will allow us to increase our production capacity by roughly 50 % and achieve sales in the 2-digit million range. The welding, machining, electrical assembly, and logistics teams will all be housed in the new hall,” explains Managing Director Andreas Doubrava.

This plant expansion has secured the essential framework conditions needed for the growth plan of the coming years. The new building has been designed in such a way that it can be extended in a further construction phase.

For over 30 years, the innovative company has been known for its high-quality, “Made in Bavaria” sawmill machines, which are already in successful use in over 80 countries around the world.

Segezha Group increases production of premium plywood Segezha Group, (“Segezha Group” or “the Company”, MOEX:SGZH, a Sistema Company), a leading Russian vertically integrated holding company in the forest industry performing a full cycle of operations from logging to advanced wood processing, produced almost 98,000 m³ of plywood in the first half of 2021 at its Vyatka Plywood Mill, up 2,000 m³ YoY. The premium birch plywood segment saw the highest increase in production volumes – up 38% to 7,500 m³.

Within this segment, a new addition to the Segezha ClearPly product range demonstrated the most significant production growth - laminated plywood offered in two coating options: transparent and semi-transparent. The second option features a hint of opal white guaranteed to brighten any interior.

This product was developed and launched in 2019. In 1H 2021, Vyatka Plywood increased its production of laminated plywood by a factor of 11.6 YoY.

Segezha ClearPly’s protective film will neither blister nor flake, deform when drilled or cut, nor change colour when exposed to moisture or sunlight. ClearPly can be used to make furniture or wall plates without needing any additional treatment. Distinguished by its enhanced durability, the product is not only ideal for interior finishing but also for outdoor solutions, be it external cladding, or decorating a street café, recreational area, or children’s playground.

The company supplies its high-quality plywood to Russia, Europe, Asia and the United States, while sales in China, India, Japan and South Korea are growing. The company exports nearly 80% of its products. The mill is equipped to produce 193,000 m³ of plywood.

NEW ADVANCES FOR HARDWOOD PROCESSING SPEEDING UP PRODUCTION, PARING DOWN COSTS, IMPROVING RECOVERY When orders are flying in and production is limited by a highly manual process, the solution is to invest in automated systems that will meet the demand, as well as reduce the overall cost of doing business for the longer term. This was the situation for Bois CFM when it decided to up its game with a new, advanced processing plant. Today that vision has become a reality, and in spite of the difficult market conditions (driven by COVID-19), the mill is getting the benefit of new technology while moving closer to its production targets.

ois CFM is a sawmill located in Sainte-Florence, Quebec that processes aspen, larch, spruce, and birch into components for pallets. The pallet products that are typically 40” to 54” (101 cm to 137 cm) in length with differing thicknesses and widths, are custom green rough sawn for direct sale to North American pallet assemblers.

Its old mill operated with a very manual process resulting in high production costs. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic customer demand was high and growing, so it made sense to invest in new, highly automated systems to move its production to the next level.

After consulting a variety of vendors and other wood processors, the mill chose USNR

based on expectations for better material yield and return on investment.

The new supply The new mill incorporates a complete new optimized primary and secondary line. The line includes an optimized End-Dog Carriage system with Lasar2 scanning, canter heads, a Quad Arbor Saw Box, and a Vertical Sawing Arbor (VSA) Gang.

Sideboards are routed to a new optimized edger system comprised of USNR’s Maximizer infeed to a Saw Boss edger box with BioLuma 2900LV sensors. The system features BioVision grading with Deep Learning AI technology to further improve the decisionmaking process. The mill’s trimmer was also equipped with USNR optimization and BioLuma 2900LV sensors for geometric and vision scanning, along with Deep Learning technology.

LUMBER PROCESSING

Challenging species All this technology might seem like overkill for a pallet mill, but there is much more to the story and it begins with the log diet: mainly aspen. Aspen is a lowerquality hardwood species with few high-value products, which is why Bois CFM produces pallets in high volumes. Another challenge with aspen is its difficult log characteristics; gnarly shapes, lots of knots, extreme sweep, and other defects. Sometimes there are 3 different sweep curves in one log.

The challenging characteristics of aspen are a major reason Bois CFM chose an end-dogging solution over a sharp chain.

Because the end-dogger holds the log in place at each end, there are no physical restrictions limiting rotation, compared with a conventional quad roll log turner.

The system provides full control of rotation, skew, and tilt on every log. More control leads to better accuracy, which in turn leads to better recovery.

25% less fiber per 1,000 bf; 33% improvement in recovery Enhanced recovery is another big advantage of the end-dog system. Between the old process and this new advanced system, the automated system requires 25% less fiber to produce 1,000 bf of products, thus yielding 33% improvement in recovery. As trees get smaller, hardwood producers could change their approach to processing. USNR Account Manager Martin Vaillancourt

said, “We believe the end-dogger system has a bright future in hardwood processing. It could replace up to half of the existing conventional log carriages in these types of applications.” For customers processing small to medium diameter hardwood logs who want to increase piece count, this system will do it and achieve higher recovery at the same time.

grub hole, and insect hole. The fact that they utilize vision at both the edger and trimmer is extremely beneficial. It allows the system to get the highest value from every piece by accurately finding defects, and using each board to its best suited purpose within the pallet based on its grade. Deep Learning helps the system decide where to put the waste within the pallet components. Although the mill is

Management also said, “We’ve increased the range of our products by staying flexible, and our product mix continues to evolve daily.”

High yield, productivity and reliability Holzindustrie Losheim (Hilo) has replaced its hard working EWD ‘Optimes’ edger after 28 years of service.

In its place is the new EWD ‘Optidrive’ highperformance edger

W

ith its processing speed of 28-30 bd/min, the EWD ‘Optimes’ board edger at Hilo Holz in Losheim, Germany, had become a bottleneck. Last December, in a first step toward upgrading the existing sawline, the Optimise unit was replaced by an ‘Optidrive’ board edger from EWD and its TAE edger with skew and slew function of for circular saws, giving higher performance and better yield.

Founded in 1992, the family business is managed by Thomas Perings. The sawmill cuts about 220,000 m3/y of logs, mainly Spruce, but also Douglas fir and a mix of the other softwoods available in the region for packaging lumber. The round timber is purchased as long logs and cut to lengths of up to 5.1 m and diameters of up to 55 cm. The company employs 45 people in the sawmill, operating an EWD chippercircular sawline, in single-shift operation.

EDGERS – OPERATION FOCUS

Successful collaboration For Hilo managing director Perings, the most important factors when deciding to invest in the future of the plant were the highest possible yield, the productivity and the reliability of the system, because one thing is very clear to him: “We have to continue to develop as a company.”

To this end, the reducer circular sawline had been partially updated more than 10 years ago. About one-and a-half years ago, together with EWD, they began planning the replacement of the Optimes edger supplied in 1993. It was clear that the new optimizing board edger should be located in the same place as its predecessor and that the loss of production due to the conversion had to be limited as much as possible.

That was achieved in close cooperation with the manufacturer, which was praised by the brothers Thomas and Pascal Perings: at the beginning of December last year, Hilo employees, with the support of an EWD technician, removed the old edger and then, without delay, the new optimizing board edger was delivered to the sawmill and installed for a smooth transition.

The hall roof had to be opened for this purpose and closed again in time for the onset of winter. Hilo was able to put the new edger into operation at the end of December after a total of three weeks of production downtime, even while taking the Christmas days off and not working on the installation.

The new EWD edger – model Optidrive TAE – has since been running without any problems, though at the still limited capacity of 30 bd/min. Limitations are centred on the downstream trimmer, which allows the company to run the OptiDrive at a feed speed

of just 200 m/min.

Nevertheless, the new edger has already increased the edging performance. In the summer 2021, after a second conversion phase, the current trimmer behind the edger will be replaced so that the edger can be operated at full speed of up to 420 m/min, which corresponds to 50-55 bd/min depending on board widths and lengths.

‘Skewing and slewing’ improves yield The Optidrive edger is special, because of the skew and slew function of the circular saws, which can be moved and swiveled during the edging cut. In the process known as ‘skew and slew’ or diagonal edging, the circular saws are moved transversely to the feed direction by up to several millimeters per linear meter during the cut, mind you at a feed rate of up to 7 m/sec.

This way, the yield can be increased, especially in the case of irregular board contours.

According to EWD’s experience with the edgers already installed, an increase in yield in the order of up to 2% over all is possible, depending on the products to be produced and the raw material.

The lateral movement of the saws, the ‘slew move’ during the cut exerts transverse forces on the circular saw blades. The thicker the boards, the higher the forces that occur. At present, Hilo’s side

boards have mainly thicknesses of 17-22 mm. In the near future, board thicknesses of up to 55 mm are also planned.

Swiveling on the horizontal plane of the edger saw box, the ‘skew move’ – not only of the saw blades but also of the entire swivelmounted machine unit – avoids these lateral forces for all board thicknesses, thus eliminating wear and tear on the saws and loss of quality in the edging cut.

Precision and high feed rate To achieve a high yield with optimized quality at such high feed rates of up to 420 m/min and piece counts of up to 55 bd/min, additional components in the plant are indispensable.

This starts with the two-stage separation of the side boards coming from the reducer circular saw line. Via a first, S-shaped pre-unscrambler, the boards are fed onto a horizontally arranged screw roller conveyor, at which point they are already aligned with the zero line of the cross transfer system. The subsequent second unscrambler separates and transports the boards onto the chain cross conveyor in front of the control cabin, where they can be visually assessed by the operator and then transferred to the cross-cut station. The two-staged separation and the alignment to the zero line in that course, provides a good lumber flush line, allowing a faster charging of the

boards onto the infeed system.

On the chain cross conveyor, the operator has the possibility of turning the boards for assessment, discharging unusable pieces downwards into the disposal area and removing slabs through cross-cutting. At the cross-cutting station, any length of slab can be cut off using a cross-cut saw on the zero line by moving the boards lengthwise on rollers that can be lifted. On the plant in Losheim, the cross-cut lengths 10 cm, 30 cm and 50 cm are predefined and can be started up automatically at the push of a button.

In the further process, manipulation time is gained by scanning the individual board twice: the thickness of the crosscut boards is scanned from above and below using optical sensors in the transverse pass and then automatically pre-aligned for the edging cut according to the contour determined before they go into the subsequent precision scan in the longitudinal pass – accelerated by way of lateral and top-engaging pressure rollers. Depending on the program specification or the operator’s choice, the boards can be aligned centrally, according to the ideal board axis or asymmetrically at the left or right wane.

An optical scanning system from Microtec is integrated into the line for linear scanning. Two cameras and four laser units scan the board on both sides. Some 800 scans per

second and a width resolution of +/- 1 mm allow precise scanning of the board even at high feed rates.

Pre-positioned pressure rollers and an upper pressure chain behind the scanning area enable the boards to be transported exactly lengthwise to the edging circular saw without changing their position. During the longitudinal transport, the scanning data is transmitted and the edger circular saws are positioned accordingly.

User-friendliness Pascal Perings, who was the project manager at Hilo for this investment, was very satisfied not only with the performance of the plant but also with its operation: for an employee who has already worked on an edger, little training time was needed on the Optidrive unit. An aspect that is all the more important because there are no trained woodworking mechanics to be found and every employee in the company has to be trained for their jobs.

The plant operates at a high cycle rate in automatic mode.

However, the operator can intervene from the enclosed control stand if necessary or adjust the settings. In addition to the relief for the operator in automatic mode, there are also clearly lower crosscutting losses during production.

Further conversion in summer This summer, the trimmer will be dismantled at Hilo in a second

conversion phase. The edged boards will then run directly into the newly configured automatic sorting system, for which Springer Maschinenfabrik, has been commissioned.

The new grading will also include a Microtec wane scanner and a full trimmer. This then eliminates the bottleneck and the EWD edger can be run at its full capacity.

Autolog introduces R-TRAC rotation tracking The latest innovation from scanning expert Autolog is a step-change in technology

A

utolog has launched a “revolutionary” sensor called R-TRAC. This new sensor is taking live degree measurements while the log is rotating. R-TRAC is a fully autonomous system that is independent of the log optimizer geometric model. It works with all types of log turners, no matter which optimizer brand is installed.

No mechanical modifications

are required to the log turner or to the infeed chain. It is easily integrated with any control system (PLC), as R-TRAC allows the use of a closed loop feedback to control the position of the log turner cylinders based on the rotation instead of their linear movement. The R-TRAC system maintains a continuous reading of the rotation angle while the log is in the field of view as opposed to applying a rotation correction after the rotation is complete.

The working principle is quite simple: a set of data is acquired for every inch the log advances; each set of data contains images of the log’s surface and geometric data; a rotation measurement is calculated for each pair of consecutive sets of data that gives a rotation value per inch of traveling. The cumulative log rotation measurement is sent to the PLC and the PLC uses these measurements to control the log turner positions using a PID loop to turn the log “perfectly” each time.

R-TRAC has a precision better than 5° of standard deviation using all data (no outliers removed as many do in their calculation). It comes with advanced statistical tools to help track the performance of the turners. At this time, the maximum speed is 600 ft/minute and it can measure logs from 4 in to 24 in.

The figure included here shows the results of a test on 50 logs in a sawmill where the R-TRAC system is currently installed. The blue represents rotation error of a log turner system without the use of R-TRAC. The red is the same system but with the R-TRAC. The curve is a lot narrower with the R-TRAC. This can give users high gain on their recovery.

R-TRAC standard deviation in this test was 4.2° compared to 9.8° without it. This is more than 5° gain on the log rotation error.

An important point to note is the mean value. With the R-TRAC, it is practically at 0° compared to 1.1° without it.

In summary, R-TRAC is a realtime system that is compatible with all types of log turners without requiring any mechanical modification to the log turner. It turns the log perfectly each time without the need to correct the turning at the end. The standard deviation on the error is less than 5° using all data .

Prestigious TC-kiln order from Maine sawmill group represents milestone for technology group

alutec is supplying another TC continuous kiln into the North America market.

The customer is the sawmill group Pleasant River, which has previously invested in TC continuous kilns for two sawmills.

The group is now purchasing a similar installation for their third sawmill in Enfield, Maine.

“This proves that our kiln technology is very competitive for North American sawmills,” Robert Larsson, CEO of Valutec, said.

“The fact that Pleasant River is choosing Valutec again is a particular honour. They are making this choice based on what they have seen our installations deliver for them, which of course represents a positive signal to the markets in the US and Canada.”

The TC continuous kiln that Pleasant River is investing in will have an annual capacity of 46,000 MBF and will be delivered to the sawmill in Enfield, which began construction a few years ago.

The lumber sawn in Enfield has previously been dried at Pleasant River’s unit in Dover, Maine, but as demand for the company’s products has increased, it is now choosing to invest in a kiln facility for the sawmill that is targeted at smaller dimensions.

“We received quotes from other suppliers but, in the end, it wasn’t a difficult decision,” says Jason Brochu, co-owner of Pleasant River.

“We are really happy with the TC continuous kilns at our sawmills in Dover and Jackman, and wanted to continue working with Valutec.”

“We are receiving many requests from the US and Canada at the moment, and the future is looking very bright,” says Robert Larsson.

“A large part of our success is based on the fact that we have developed alongside the sawmills, and have seen the challenges they have to deal with on a dayto-day basis. This has driven the development of our kiln models and control systems.

“It’s a wonderful feeling to see the difference we can make for customers who want to take advantage of and develop the use of wood products all over the world.”

Millar Western orders new USNR BioVision edger line Millar Western at Whitecourt, AB is investing in a new transverse edger line that will feature BioVision scanning and optimization with Deep Learning A.I. This is a replacement for an older line, and the mill’s goal is to increase productivity and reliability to match the production targets of the mill.

At the same time the mill wants to utilize top-tier vision technology and maximize the value from its production.

The supply will begin at the edger unscrambler through to the Model 625 positioning infeed, 4TA top arbor edger with reman head, and flying vee tailer. The MillTrak

lumber flow management system will control the flow from the unscrambler through the scanner transfer. The new scan frame will feature BioLuma 2900LV sensors, and USNR’s PLC control system will control the complete line from the unscrambler incline through the slow down belt.

This new line is scheduled to be commissioned later in 2021.

“Effortless” pushbutton controls lock and unlock the seat in any position in the range, according to the manufacturer. The operator has full control of all machine functions including drive controls. The 220° seat rotation improves operator visibility, greatly reduces neck strain, and allows the operator to easily exit either side of the cab.

A durable, heavy duty air ride suspension seat with state-ofthe-art heating and cooling keeps the operator comfortable all day long. The reclining seat is fully adjustable with seat angle and seat extension adjustment. Tilt up adjustable armrests along with adjustable lumbar support all contribute to operator comfort. A secure five-point harness comes standard for improved safety.

A completely redesigned HVAC system provides greater cooling capacity and 50% more air vents for improved comfort. The larger intake filter keeps the cabin air clean. The fan speed control is now infinitely variable from zero to 100% and a new defrost option is available which cycles the A/C on and off automatically to keep the windows clear. A climate-controlled cup holder is connected to the system to heat or cool drinks.

Operator controls are located on the armrests and include many new features. Differential lock buttons are on the joystick and can engage front and rear separately.

LED lights above the buttons illuminate when they are active. A cruise control button maintains the current engine speed allowing the operator to release the pedal. The grapple constant pressure button also turns on an LED indicator on the joystick alerting the operator

that the constant pressure is activated.

Other features of the H-series cab include a tire pressure monitoring system, bright LED interior lights, a lunch box storage area, cell phone storage with charging port, and hooks for a

All flat front chassis belly doors use a pivot bolt so they will swing to the side when service is needed. The angled belly door is keyed to prevent it from dropping when bolts are removed. When tilting the cab is necessary, new ‘quarter turn’ locking pins are used to lock the cab in the down position. To tilt the cab, simply loosen the locking plate bolts, slide the locking plate down, and turn the pins to the unlock position. Removing and installing the sweep bolts is easier with a new two-piece design.

Fine adjustments can be made by loosening the additional sweep bolt. New keyed washers further simplify the assembly.

The company’s liquid injection system is a high-flow water option that’s great for mulch coloring and dust control, and an optional transportation dolly is available on many Peterson grinder models.

With an eye on innovation, Peterson has added several new models to the lineup.

1700 Series Horizontal Grinders Peterson’s most significant addition to the of horizontal grinder lineup brings big power in a small package. This compact grinder has a 44 ft 1 in (1,344 cm) operating length but packs an impressive 455 hp (339 kW) Caterpillar C9.3B Tier IV engine and a large feed opening of 54 ft x 27 in (137 x 69 cm).

The 1700D Horizontal Grinder is available with wheels, while the 1710D Horizontal Grinder is a tracked model. The 1700D has a pintle hitch and can be transported between job sites with a dump truck.

4700D Horizontal Grinder The most recent model release, the 4700D Horizontal Grinder, is designed for high-volume producers with very demanding end-product specifications. The 4700D is powered by a Tier IV Caterpillar C18 engine rated at 755 HP (563 kW).

2750D Horizontal Grinder Peterson’s new 2750D Electric Horizontal Grinder is powered by a single 600 HP (450 kW) electric motor. An on-site electric machine may be the answer for grinding mill residuals to increasing profits since electric power costs are typically much lower than diesel fuel costs.

With a feed opening of 60¾ in x 32 in (154 cm x 81 cm) combined with Peterson’s high lift feed roll for an optional opening up to 44 in (112 cm) high, the 2750D can reduce a diverse range of raw materials.

While Peterson brought the industry-changing horizontal grinder to the marketplace to process wood waste from in-field chipping operations, sustained growth and a focus on customeroriented products continues to keep the manufacturer at the forefront of the market.

Equipment manufacturer Rawlings describes itself as a “proven leader” in size reduction technology that specializes in helping business owners with the design of custom wood-waste recovery systems for specific processing needs and budgets.

Rawlings states it can handle every aspect of configuring, building, installing, and supporting a complete materials processing system. Its electric stationary systems come in all shapes and sizes – indoor/outdoor; from simple stand-alone vertical hogs for saw and paper mills, to complete multi-dimensional systems.

“Add a wide variety of available options, and you’ve got the flexibility to customize the perfect wood waste recovery system,” the company stated.

Each system can be designed with work platform decks, choice of belt, chain or vibrating in-feed and out-feed conveyors, metal or magnet protection, product screening and separation all customizable for specific operations.

Markets for wood waste start with feedstock for engineered woods, landscape mulch, soil conditioner, animal bedding, compost additive, sewage sludge, and boiler fuel. All these end uses have similar processing requirements in that the wood waste has to be separated from other wastes, cleaned by removing contaminants and fasteners, and, in some cases, processed through grinding or chipping.

The final use of the wood waste often determines how clean and consistent the feedstock must be (California Integrated Waste

Management 2001).

“During our 40 years designing wood waste grinding systems we have found that most of our clients are looking to get the smallest end particle size on a single pass, onestage pass through the grinder,” Rawlings said. “We often suggest that this is not always the most economical option in the long run.

“Running the grinder and related equipment at full surge capacity results in higher consumption of spare parts and maintenance costs. And depending if you’re using electricity or diesel fuel these costs add up over time.”

During the preliminary design there are many factors that should be considered. Such factors include species of wood, moisture content, diameter and length of incoming wood waste, metal contamination and most importantly the required end product size.

For high volume high capacity wood handling operations that typically receive a large variety of contaminated materials such as railroad ties, pallets, construction,

demolition and hurricane waste, Rawlings recommends wood waste systems to incorporate a combination of equipment. This could include both horizontal and vertical feed grinders.

Horizontal grinders or slow speed grinders are often utilized as the primary grinder while the vertical grinders are used to produce a smaller more consistent particle size. Using metal protection, product screening and separation allows the customer to protect their investment while producing a high-quality consistent end product.

If the wood handling system is designed to receive a steady stream of bark or sawmill waste a vertical feed hog is the preferred option. Typically in this scenario most of the incoming material is preprocessed further upstream and it already sized to be processed through this type of grinder.

hen it comes time to add or replace a grinder in your equipment fleet, one of the first questions an operator should consider is: “Do I need a tub grinder or a horizontal grinder?”

It is important to compare the two grinder designs and features for yourself and then determine which is right for a given operation.

Here is a brief overview of things to consider during the buying process.

Safety considerations According to David Steege, recycling account manager at RDO Equipment, properly trained and experienced operators know that if they are working with material that may contain non-organic contaminants (i.e. metal), they need to spend a bit of time sorting and paying close attention to every load they feed into the grinder. This step will help mitigate the risk of thrown objects.

“With tub grinders, features like the patented thrown object restrain system (TORS) found on Vermeer models, can help reduce the amount and distance of thrown objects,” explained Steeg.

grinder’s bowl is filled to proper capacity – per your operator’s manual – also can help reduce the risk of the grinder throwing material. Since tub grinders use gravity to feed the hammer mill, a full tub can provide an additional layer of protection to help keep material where it belongs.”

To help mitigate the risk of metal contaminants cycling through with organic material, Vermeer grinders (tub and horizontal) can be outfitted with the optional Vermeer Damage Defense System. When a metal contaminant is detected during operations, the Damage Defense system will alert the grinder control and automatically initiate the shutdown process.

Space available Some in the industry may have heard that tub grinders need a lot more room to operate. This is due to the distance thrown objects can travel, but Steege explained that there is more you need to consider on the topic of working areas.

“Tub grinders will often be used to process a lot of different types of wood waste, and possibly in a setting where the incoming material may not be the cleanest,” he said. “Tubs can handle that type of material, but it’s always advisable to have more open area surrounding the machine.

Otherwise, the operational space needs for horizontal and tub grinders are similar.”

Material sizing Next on your list of considerations is which machine is going to size your material more consistently.

There are several factors to consider when thinking about this area beyond the basic tub or horizontal grinder design.

“Consistency of material sizing can be more related to the quality of the machine and how all of the moving parts work together than whether it’s a tub or horizontal grinder,” said Steege. “The Vermeer duplex drum system and screen configuration optimize the grinders’ performance to produce a quality end product.”

Steege went on to say that taking a look at the size of the incoming material is a more important consideration.

“When I’m in the field talking to contractors and facility managers about grinders, one of the first things I ask them about is the type and size of material they are going to be grinding. Horizontal grinders are more efficient than tubs at handling longer material because less cutting is required before it can be fed through the machine.

“So, if they are going to be running long branches and tree trunks, a horizontal grinder will

For loose green waste, Steege said either grinder is fine, but tub grinders may be more efficient for their operation.

“With horizontal grinders, the material is being force-fed into the drum, but tubs use gravity, so there are fewer moving parts involved with the process.”

A second life for dead and diseased olive trees “

Vermeer grinding technology is breathing new life into griefstricken region of Italy

W

hat you’re looking at here is a disease that has cost this region five thousand jobs,” says Cosimo Valente. He gestures to an olive tree whose glossy, arrowhead leaves have turned brown at the tips, as if singed by fire.

“Sadly, once a tree has Xylella fastidiosa, there’s nothing you can do. First, its growth becomes stunted. Then, it starts dying back and becomes unproductive. But before that happens, the infection will have spread, devastating more plantations, putting more livelihoods at risk. So, you’ve got to act, and act quickly,” he says.

Cosimo heads up Ital Bio Energy, a company that has developed an innovative, environmentally friendly approach to mitigating the economic damage caused by Xylella. This bacterial disease has hit southern Europe’s olive industry hard and nowhere more so than the Salento region of Italy that Cosimo calls home.

Over a 10-year period, extensive damage has been done to the economy of the wider Apulia region, which until recently,

produced about 40% of Italy’s exported olive oil. Countless trees have been lost, including many Ulivi secolari, ancient trees that, for centuries, underpinned the economy in a place where few other crops are commercially viable.

Salento’s hopes of ultimately beating Xylella lie with the scientific community. A resistant cultivar, or a strategy for controlling the spittlebug that spreads the infection, may ultimately provide salvation. In the meantime, Ital Bio Energy aims to help the community offset the damage by putting the blighted trees to commercial use and supporting the circular economy in the process.

“In the past, dead olive trees would have been used as domestic fire wood,” explains Cosimo. “But so many plantations have been destroyed that the supply of fire wood now far outstrips demand.

So, we’ve developed a way of processing the wood to make it suitable for use as biofuel in power plants.”

In line with the EU’s ambition of cutting carbon emissions to less

than half their 1990 level by the end of the decade, Italy is building up the proportion of its electricity generated from biomass. Rather than using fossil fuel, many of the country’s power stations now burn fuel crops and combustible waste.

As a result, instead of increasing the amount of carbon in circulation, they form part of a closed carbon cycle.

“We like to think of what we’re doing as giving a second life to dead and diseased olive trees,” Cosimo adds. “We’re taking something that would otherwise be a worthless waste product and turning it into a resource that can be reintroduced to the economy.

That translates into much-needed income and jobs for a community that has suffered badly.”

A second excavator fitted with a grab claw then drops the stacked material into the intake hopper of a Vermeer HG4000 horizontal grinder, which reduces everything to fine chips. At the other end of the grinder, a conveyor feeds a steady stream of chipped wood into a waiting truck.

More vehicles stand queued for loading, their movements muted by the constant throb of motors and crack of breaking timber.

“Diseased they may be, but these trees are made of very hard wood,” says Cosimo. The dense and resinous structure of olive timber means that the viability of the biofuel production process depends on having the right machinery.

“Without a grinder like the Vermeer HG4000, it would be almost impossible to produce combustion-grade chippings from this material. The HG4000 allows us to work fast and deliver a highquality end product. We looked carefully at a variety of machines and evaluated all our options before deciding which way to go.

The HG4000 stood out in terms of both production rate and product quality.”

Much of the grinder’s ability to chip such resilient wood is down to a high-torque Fiat Powertrain engine that delivers 384 kilowatts of power. The HG4000 also has an electric cooling fan array, meaning that cooling doesn’t draw power away from material processing.

Infeed traction is optimized by a crush boost feature that allows

feed roller downforce to be briefly increased whenever a stubborn piece of timber is encountered. The efficient infeed system is coupled with a 9-hammer duplex milling drum to create a package capable of grinding about 35,000 kg/hr.

With a typical olive tree weighing between 2,000 kg and 3,000 kg, Ital Bio Energy’s Vermeer HG4000 can process 300-400 trees per day.

However, a high processing speed is only one of Cosimo Valente’s requirements: “It’s vital that we produce clean wood,” he explains. “The impurity concentration in the finished product has to be as low as possible. Biomass plants won’t take fuel that is more than 3% impure.”

Therefore, the HG4000 horizontal grinder’s hinged, dual screens were an important plus in Cosimo’s eyes. The mesh screens surround the milling drum, allowing material of a certain size to pass through, while larger fragments remain until further reduced in size. Thus, the screens enable separation of wood from other material and control the grade and consistency of the finished chippings.

“Being able to switch and reverse the screens to suit the material we’re processing is crucial.

The Vermeer horizontal grinder has a really big screen area as well, which is good for the production rate,” says Cosimo.

Ital Bio Energy supplies fuel to biomass plants throughout southern Italy. To make that possible, the company clears sites

at remarkable speed.

“We work a three-shift pattern, so that we’re able to operate around the clock, seven days a week,” says Cosimo. The reliability of the company’s machinery park is central to the viability of its business model.

“We’re very satisfied with the Vermeer grinder on that score.

It’s an exceptional unit, and we’re glad to work with it. So much so, that we’ve recently added another Vermeer horizontal grinder to our fleet, the new HG6000.”

While it saddens Cosimo to witness the damage caused by Xylella, he takes comfort in the fact that he and his company are able to help redress the balance. “We take a lot of pride in the role we play,”

Each operator can preset and store their own preferred machine settings using Operator ID, and the excavator remembers those settings each time the operator logs in.

Delivering all-day climate comfort, internal cab temperature is easily adjusted to the ideal setting using the new monitor.

Advanced viscous mounts found on the M320 cab decrease machine vibration feed-back, reducing operator fatigue. Its tiltup left console design simplifies cab ingress/egress for the new wheeled excavator. Reducing the number of actions required by the operator, auto axle lock detects when the service brake and axle need to be locked or unlocked, and it releases automatically when the operator presses the travel pedal.

Boosting operating efficiency as well as safety, standard rearview and right-side cameras, along with large cab windows with small cab pillars, help to improve jobsite visibility for the operator.

Tight space workhorse One of the key benefits of the HTH624C 4x4 LP is its ability to work in tight spaces. As a multiuse tool, it can handle the jobs of multiple pieces of equipment – a key feature when space doesn’t permit several pieces of equipment. John Deere partners with Tiltrotator Company John Deere has announced a preferred supplier agreement with engcon, a tiltrotator manufacturer.

As a part of the agreement customers can purchase select engcon tiltrotators through John Deere construction and compact construction equipment dealers and Hitachi excavator dealers, starting in the U.S. and Canada in the second half of 2021.

Tiltrotator models ranging from the EC204 up to the EC233 will be available – these tiltrotator models match with the John Deere 26G through 345G and Hitachi ZX26 through ZX345 excavator models.

Tiltrotators have long been popular in Scandinavian countries such as Norway, Sweden and Denmark, as well as some other countries in Europe, but their usage in North America has

traditionally been low.

When equipped, a tiltrotator enables an excavator bucket or other attachments to rotate 360 degrees around the axis and tilt up to 45 degrees side to side. A tiltrotator-equipped excavator offers enhanced value for customers, especially those working in tight, challenging job sites or tackling applications that require precision and versatility, such as site development, underground work and landscaping.

Production start at Komatsu Forest One a historic event

Soon, forest machine production is to begin at Komatsu Forest’s newly built factory outside Umeå in northern Sweden.

Here, assembly will take place on a single production line, around which the flows of both materials and people are optimised and automated to ensure high product quality and a high level of customer service.

W

ork was begun during August to introduce and prepare roughly 220 employees to the new production system. Although many of them have worked at the company for a long time, there are new tasks and processes to get acquainted with.

“Our new production setup, which entails, among other things, a single assembly line where we build both harvesters and forwarders, offers many advantages, including the ability to follow up quality, availability and safety in detail. Our customers will also experience greater flexibility and shorter lead times,” says Anna Fredriksson, Factory Manager, Komatsu Forest.

The assembly line is driven by automated guided vehicles, or AGVs for short, which are driverless forklifts that automatically move along the production line at slow speed. The investment in AGVs will enable a new, safer way of working as the machines do not need to be lifted to move them along the line.

In turn, fewer lifts means a safer work environment for assembly line staff.

Everything is planned down to the smallest detail to optimise logistical flows and minimise movements, even those of staff. A brand-new inventory management

system tracks where each component is in the process and ensures its correct location in the flow. Moreover, most components are stored indoors in the warm, which ensures not only better quality, but also shorter lead times.

Production staff have also been involved in the design and layout of their workstations – everything to ensure seamless integration with the production process.

Internal quality control is better planned at the new factory, with any identified shortcomings in quality rectified as early as possible in the production process.

There are also good opportunities to minimise all types of corrective and touch-up painting, which will lessen environmental impact and reduce chemical use, thereby also improving the work environment.

Safety always comes first at Komatsu, and the new factory has been carefully planned to eliminate risks. The fact that all operations are now gathered in one place means, for example, that no forest machines need to be driven on public roads. Driving routes and roads, both inside and outside, are well considered and clearly marked to ensure, for example, that forest machines are kept separate from other traffic within the factory grounds.

“This is an important step in the history of Komatsu Forest.

We are both happy and proud to be commissioning our new plant.

At the same time, this is just the beginning – the office building will also be completed by the end of the year, and it will only be then that all employees are gathered in one place. This is where the fun begins, in our long-term efforts to manage all these new opportunities,” Fredriksson ends.

This fall, John Deere introduces the new, small-size H423 harvester head and the large-size H425 and H425HD. These new attachments replace the previous H413, H415 and H415HD models.

Like its predecessor, these heads have 4WD feed.

The H423 harvester head works on the 1070G, 1170G and 1270G base machines and is ideal for thinnings and other fellings, where the tree diameter at chest height (BHD) is 150-350 mm.

With improved hose routing from boom to harvester head, and from valve block to feed motors, this attachment offers improved durability, easy hose replacement and improved hose protection with modifications to the frame. It has an operating range of minimum diameter at chest height (BHD) 40 mm to a maximum 500 mm.

The H425 harvester head for the larger size class is available on the 1270G and 1470G base machines. This attachment is ideal for final fellings and other fellings where the tree diameter at chest height (BHD) is 250-500 mm. Also including improved hose routing from loader to harvester head and from valve block to feed motors, the hoses are routed through the frame and well protected within the structures, improving durability. These can be tiring and make maintaining a steady and high production rate a challenge – and in the long run they can even affect your body physically Komatsu Forest is now introducing the next generation of Komatsu Comfort Ride, with several comfort-enhancing innovations.

omatsu Forest first launched the Komatsu Comfort Ride forwarder option back in 2013, a hydraulic cab suspension system with a four-point design that efficiently dampens jolts and vibrations. “Comfort Ride quickly became one of the most popular options for Komatsu forwarders and now it’s time to introduce the next generation of Comfort Ride, with several eagerly awaited features,” says Daniel Grabbe Product Manager Forwarders at Komatsu Forest.

One new feature is the ability to adjust the cab suspension’s lateral firmness, which further improves operator comfort. This function is geared to the machine’s

speed to make driving as comfortable as possible regardless of whether the operator is inching over an off-road obstacle or driving unladen from the landing to the next wood pile. In practical terms, the suspension’s firmness is progressive, increasing with machine speed to ensure maximum comfort. “Since operator preferences regarding optimal cab suspension in various situations differ, individual adjustments can be made for each operator and settings are automatically saved in MaxiXT,” Grabbe explains.

The operator can also easily adjust the firmness while driving if necessary, to adapt the machine to varying ground

conditions. The suspension’s firmness is adjusted using a button on the hand controller.

Another new feature is that the new Comfort Ride can level the cab laterally on gradients of up to 6 degrees, provided the machine is stationary or moving slowly. This offers the operator a more comfortable working posture during crane operation, which usually is a

fair share of their working day.

When the machine is moving at higher speeds, the longitudinal suspension is given priority to better handle rough terrain.

When unloading, a clear view of the load area is advantageous. Comfort Ride has long had an unloading mode that raises the cab the full stroke of the cylinders. This affords the operator a good

overview of the load area and the landing. One of the updates in the new Comfort Ride is that this function now also works when the machine is moved at low speed. This allows the operator to reposition the machine at the landing while still retaining the elevated position. If, however, the speed increases, the cab is automatically lowered back

down to its standard position.

ohn Deere has added a 330-horsepower option for the 853M Tracked Feller Buncher and 853MH Tracked Harvester, equipped with the Dedicated Travel System.

The 10% increase in horsepower, combined with the optional Dedicated Travel System, allows for higher productivity, and enhanced overall machine efficiency.

Other key features found on the 853M and 853MH machines include a comfortable operator station with excellent visibility, ergonomically designed controls, and the fatigue-reducing Rapid Cycle System (RCS).

Looking to meet the needs of the most demanding forestry applications, John Deere now offers a 330-horsepower option for the 853M Tracked Feller Buncher and 853MH Tracked Harvester equipped with the optional Dedicated Travel System feature.

The additional horsepower is fully available for additional work, adding to the increased performance and productivity of the equipment.

The horsepower update further adds to the customer-driven features found on the M-Series and MH-Series machines. The operator station was designed by loggers, for loggers, with maximum

comfort in mind. Floor-to-ceiling windows maximize visibility, and ergonomically designed controls further enhance the operator experience. The Rapid Cycle System allows for low-effort joystick control of all boom functions, considerably reducing operator fatigue and increasing productivity.
