EDITOR’S COMMENT Forestry post-COVID looks ‘greener’

W

hen I left off last time, I was speculating on the shape of a recovery and, from memory, I believe I was hedging my bets and suggesting we were tracking for a reality somewhere between a best-case, V-shaped recovery and a prolonged lockdown period followed by a deep recession and slow recovery.

Where in between these points we ended up would depend almost entirely, I (most people?) thought, on the speed at which a vaccine could be developed and distributed.

It is therefore pleasing to be writing this column following the positive trials for not one, but a handful of vaccines – in all, there are apparently more than 150 vaccine efforts cooking globally. The most successful of these is a source of pride for our little organisation, given it originates from Oxford University, which is just a stone’s throw (albeit a long stone’s throw) from our UK offices. If the breathless mainstream press can be trusted, a vaccine could be ready for distribution to the most vulnerable by Christmas – fantastic news indeed.

At the same time, we have seen positive signs out of China – the world’s growth engine for the past almost two decades and the world economy’s saviour immediately following the last financial crisis that gripped us in 2008-2009.

China’s GDP grew 3.2% year-on-year in the second quarter, reversing from a 6.8% drop in the March quarter. No other nation does stimulus better than China and, though a sharp focus has turned to the Communist Party of China’s geopolitical agenda and many governments have displayed misgivings over China’s role as the source of the pandemic, history shows self-interest will prevail and China will quickly re-establish trade relationships, even if the negotiations are fraught. Wood Resources International recently reported that German log and lumber exports set new records in 2020, with half of the 2.4 million m3 moved heading to China in the four months to April.

Other large economies may be weighed down – namely the US – but with resilience

and growth in other parts of the world, there must be hope that, with a vaccine close, even the most troubled economies can see light (and the US has only been outbought on orders from Oxford by the UK).

Whether or not this means a V-shaped recovery is uncertain. But, from where I’m sitting, it’s tough to see it getting any worse for the forestry sector.

Much like in 2008-2009, primary industry is usually valued far more in times of economic crisis than when the world is booming. Sure, tech stocks might sound cool when you’re talking to your friends at the pub, but when push comes to shove, people prefer tangible assets that hold genuine value.

Also, again like the last crisis (and many before it), governments are planning to build their way out of trouble with infrastructure projects the like most would not have seen – and will not see again. These are planned across the first world and parts of the developing world. Forestry, as a supplier of construction materials, will of course benefit from these.

And, finally, governments have bought into sectors to hold stakes in private businesses at levels not seen since the Second World War. These rescue missions and resulting influence means politicians will now set much of the business agenda.

Do not be surprised, therefore, to see political issues such as climate change and environmentalism in general being pushed through businesses at a far faster rate than previously thought possible. Business will have to comply or forfeit their aid – think recyclable building materials and biomass energy.

So, while the world remains an uncertain place, I’m feeling much more confident writing this column than I was in April, or indeed June. And you should be, too.

Timo Ylänen appointed Vice President, Worldwide Forestry, Deere &Company Timo Ylänen, Director, John Deere Forestry Oy, has been appointed Vice President, Worldwide Forestry, Deere&Company. In his new position Ylänen will be responsible for full-tree and cut-to-length machine business globally and will be a member of the Construction & Forestry senior leadership team.

In June 2020 Deere announced a new Smart Industrial operating model targeting the development of production systems, technology solutions and support capabilities across the full lifetime of products.

The new operating model is designed to generate clear added value for customers and support their profitability. In line with the operating model, product

development capital will be allocated to the most promising, most profitable technologies that drive value creation for customers in an effort to integrate smart technology innovations also into existing production. Also organizational structures will be renewed to support the new operating model.

In his new position Ylänen will report to Construction & Forestry President John Stone. Timo’s strong sales and marketing experience, expertise in the global forestry industry, and sound business acumen are solid qualifications for the new responsibilities.

Morbark announces leadership change Morbark, LLC, has announced the appointment of Bradley (Brad) Boehler as the successor to current Vice President of Alamo Group’s Forestry and Tree Care Business Unit and President of Morbark Holdings, Dave Herr, effective August 24, 2020.

Herr joined Morbark initially as a board director and then as its CEO in October 2016. He successfully led the Company through a period of intense growth, operational improvement, acquisition, and integration of complementary businesses,

including Rayco Manufacturing, LLC, and Denis Cimaf, Inc., and finally, the transfer of ownership to Alamo Group in 2019.

“Dave will surely be missed, but we wish him continued success in the future and thank him for his many contributions to Morbark’s success and to Alamo Group,” said Jeff Leonard, Executive Vice President, Alamo Group, Industrial Division.

Herr said, “It has been an honour and privilege to lead Morbark and be able to work with so many talented and dedicated

Komatsu upgrades XT-5 family of Tracked Feller Bunchers with performance improvements, Special Warranty Program To better meet customer needs, Komatsu is upgrading its XT-5 family of tracked feller bunchers, adding performance and operator improvements, as well as covering the machines with a special 2-Year/5,000-Hour warranty program. The XT430-5, XT445L-5 and XT465L-5 models were introduced in 2018, and these advancements were made based on customer feedback.

Komatsu XT-5 machines let customers travel, operate the swing, arm and tool simultaneously, for maximum usability. To further boost multifunctioning performance for its customers, Komatsu added 7% more horsepower (331 hp vs. 310 at launch) to the Cummins QSL9 engine and increased the hydraulic flow, while maintaining excellent fuel efficiency.

Travel speed was increased by 25% to further improve productivity. The XT445L-5/ XT465L-5 models now reach 3.3 mph (5.3 kph); the XT430-5 model, 3.2 mph (5.1 kph). Added lighting elements improve nighttime visibility of the right track and when using the rear camera, for a total of 13 LED lights brilliantly illuminating nighttime operations.

Enviva completes acquisition of Georgia Biomass & its Waycross Production Plant Enviva Partners, LP recemtly announced the completion of its previously announced acquisition of a world-class, industrial scale wood pellet production plant in Waycross, Georgia, and associated contracted terminal capacity in Savannah, Georgia.

Enviva’s growing operational footprint across the U.S. Southeast now includes nine wood pellet production plants and five deepwater export terminals across Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida.

“We are excited to welcome the entire Waycross team into the Enviva family,” said John Keppler, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Enviva. “This is an important step for Enviva’s growth and we look forward to continuing to be a great employer, customer, and neighbour, and an important contributor to the State of Georgia, a community we now call home.”

The newly acquired Waycross plant has been operating since 2011 and has a production capacity of approximately 800,000 metric tons per year, all of which is exported through the Port of Savannah to Enviva’s customers under long-term take-or-pay off-take contracts, many of which extend until the mid-2040s. Following the acquisition, Enviva’s total annual wood pellet production capacity is approximately 4.9 million metric tons. With the acquisition complete, the Waycross plant is now called, “Enviva Pellets Waycross.”

“The Waycross plant, its leadership, and the entire team are a perfect match for Enviva,” said Royal Smith, Executive Vice President of Operations of Enviva.

According to Bergmann, the Mozyr sawmill owned by Kaamos Timber will create 100 new jobs in the area and will almost double Kaamos Timber’s existing production capacity in the Belarusian wood industry.

“Our existing sawmill in Vitebsk produces nearly 250,000 m3 of softwood timber, and with the new factory, the total production volume will increase to nearly 450,000 m3.

Production volume to be increased by nearly a half will certainly allow us to increase export to both Europe and Asia,” said Bergmann.

The company has been associated with ERBD for a long time now. The ERBD has played a major role in the growth and expansion of the Vitebsk mill.

Since the start of its operations in Belarus in 1992, the EBRD has invested almost EUR 2.7 billion in 119 projects in various sectors of the country’s economy.

The Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs has announced further steps to open up the economy: as of September 1, trade fairs can also be held again in Bavaria. This is the starting signal for the GrindTec 2020.

trade fairs planning security and clarity on Tuesday, May 26. From September trade fairs can take place again, the final confirmation for the GrindTec 2020, which will now take place as planned from 10th to 13th November at the Augsburg Trade Fair Centre.

AFAG considers itself well prepared. Together with the Bavarian trade fair locations, the managing directors have already

been working for weeks on the development of a coordinated hygiene concept. By the autumn, the safety and hygiene concept is to be tested for its practical suitability and adapted to current conditions.

J.D. Irving kicks off $35M expansion at Doaktown Sawmill The sawmills division of NBbased J.D. Irving, Limited announced plans to begin the earlier announced expansion and modernization works at the Doaktown, NB sawmill.

The company plans to make an investment of around $35 million towards the project, which was scheduled to begin in the month of July this year, said a news release.

The project will expand the

mill’s footprint by approximately $14,000 square feet. It aims to bring together the saw mill, planer mill and value-added center all under one single roof.

It must be noted that the saw mill is currently located at the opposite side of the road.

As part of the project, the entire lumber production process will be modernized by way of installation of state-of-the-art technologies and

equipment.

The project is estimated to employ a team comprising of 60 members during peak construction and is expected to generate nearly 40,000 person hours of work. The commissioning and start-up of the expanded facility is scheduled to take place during spring 2021.

The expanded facility offers great opportunity for the Miramichi region to develop its forestry

sector. Moreover, the investment brings in long-term security for Doaktown village and its communities.

Holmen acquires Martinsons Holmen has signed an agreement to acquire Martinsons, one of Sweden’s leading players in sawn and processed wood products. The purchase price is SEK 1.0 billion for 100 per cent of the shares. The acquisition will almost double Holmen’s sales of wood products to over SEK 3 billion, while also advancing positions in wood construction and providing Holmen with the capacity to process the majority of the raw material from its own forests in its own industry.

After completion of current investments, Bygdsiljum, the larger sawmill, will be able to produce 500 000 m3 of wood products annually, while the annual production at Kroksjön is over 100 000 m3. Bygdsiljum also manufactures CLT and glulam

beams, while Kroksjön processes wood products through trimming, planing, painting, treatment and finger jointing. Annual timber consumption is 1 million m3, which corresponds with Holmen’s annual timber harvest in northern Sweden “In recent years we have invested in gradually increasing value-added and sales to Swedish builders’ merchants. Martinsons provides a good complement to our offering and strengthens our position on the market. Demand for processed wood products, especially CLT and glulam beams, is growing and with rising interest in wood construction we see great opportunities to further develop the business”, says Johan Padel, Senior Vice President Wood Products, Holmen.

In 2019 Martinsons turnover was SEK 1.8 billion, where SEK 1.1 billion came from sales of sawn and processed wood products, SEK 0.3 billion from major wood construction projects and the remainder from sales of by-products and timber trading.

Martinsons’ underlying EBITDA totalled SEK 157 million in 2019 and operating profit amounted to SEK 99 million. The acquisition will be funded from existing credit facilities and is expected to positively contribute to earnings per share from the time of takeover, which is expected to occur during the fourth quarter.

The deal is subject to approval from the relevant competition authority, which is expected in the fall.

Holmen’s wood products business had sales of SEK 1.7 billion in 2019 and EBITDA amounted to SEK 159 million.

Canfor subsidiary to acquire strategic assets Canfor Corporation (TSX: CFP) announced recently that its 70%-owned subsidiary, Vida Group, has entered into an agreement to purchase three sawmills located in Sweden from Bergs Timber for a purchase price of CAD$43 million plus working capital.

“We are excited that Vida’s strong performance and balance sheet has enabled them to grow their operating footprint in Sweden,” said Don Kayne, President and Chief Executive Officer of Canfor.

The three mills, which are located in Vimmerby, Mörlunda

and Orrefors, Sweden, will add approximately 215 million board feet to Vida’s annual capacity.

With additional investment, Vida anticipates the production capacity of the mills can be increased to 300 million board feet.

After taking into account this additional production capacity, Sweden represents 22% of Canfor’s globally diversified operating platforms, plus 43% in British Columbia, 31% in the Southern United States and 4% in Alberta.

The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter of 2020 and is subject to due diligence,

completion of certain transaction documents and other customary closing conditions, including any required regulatory approvals.

Following downtime related to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, Vida is operating at full capacity and Canfor continues to employ variable operating schedules in North America with sawmills in the United States operating at almost full capacity and Canadian sawmills operating at approximately 90% effective June 18, 2020.

SCA has confirms new harvesting plan SCA has confirmed a new harvesting plan which shows that the harvesting level in it’s own forest will increase over the coming five years by an additional one million cubic meters per year more than the current level. The increased harvesting level gives

an increased cash flow of 300-400 MSEK per year with full effect from 2025.

In 2019, SCA made a new forest survey which showed that the company’s forests had a higher standing volume and a higher growth rate than previously

estimated. A higher growth rate gives higher long term harvesting potential.

The new harvesting plan is now confirmed and it is based on calculations of the development of the forest over more than one hundred years into the future.

It shows that harvesting over the coming five year period can successively increase from todays level of 4.3 million cubics meter solid wood under bark (m3sub) to 5.4 million m3sub per year.

A new woodroom has been placed in service at the Bratsk Mill of Ilim Group The new woodroom includes three lines with an aggregate capacity of 5 million cubic meters of chips per year. The project investments amounted to USD 125 million. The woodroom lines are interchangeable with the distinction between them being the type of processed species. The lines handle SW and HW species, as well as their mix. A completely automated process control from debarking to feeding of chips to a storage area allows not only to minimize losses during the chip production process, but also to significantly improve chips quality.

Production of chips of the required species mix by better controlling the wood mix will have a positive impact on the pulp quality.

An important environmental effect involving reduction of water consumption and, consequently, reduction of the effluents sent to

the waste water treatment plant will be achieved through the use of a dry debarking method that is now one of the best available technologies. Sand, stones and small hard particles will be captured and sent to the waste collecting container. These efforts will allow to minimize the impact on a water body where wastewater is sent after treatment at the waste water treatment plant. Moreover, automated water supply and temperature adjustment will drive a significant reduction of electric energy consumption.

Construction of a new woodroom required an upgrade of a chip handling system used to transfer chips to the new outdoor chip storages, as well as an upgrade of the chip storages themselves. A conveyor-based chip feeding system has been installed at chip storages. This system (as

compared to a pneumatic system) allows to maintain the quality of chips fed to the Cooking Area.

Moreover, Ilim’s storage areas have implemented the FIFO principle ensuring an optimal duration of storage before feeding chips to the Cooking Area.

Swedish group SCA maintains alliance with Microtec

The largest project in the company’s history to date was achieved in the course of several orders. Scanners from Microtec are now being used at all production stages of the SCA Bollstabruck sawmill.

“We are very pleased with SCA’s decision to continue its

long-standing partnership with Microtec. This project is of outstanding strategic importance, as it combines our innovative scanning technology with the ability to display the entire production process in a completely transparent manner,” emphasizes Frank Jöst, CEO Microtec.

The project includes the implementation of a CT Log and a Logeye 302D fingerprint scanner in front of the sawing line.

Microtec will also install two Goldeneye 900 Multi-Sensor Quality scanners for green sorting and another Goldeneye 900 for dry sorting.

The analysis of the resulting data is carried out by using the Mill Manager developed by Microtec.

O

ptimization and automation has ensured the wood processing industry can deliver maximum material yield and cost-effective operations on a daily basis. While optimization and automation are widespread in sawmills, certain stages of processing are not at their full potential yet and this has a direct impact on the rest of the production line. This is the case for the debarking lines.

Although they are undesirable, logs and stems with stumps or wide flares are usually part of the wood supply. Certain sawmills will resell these logs while others that do not have the proper equipment, will perform a risky operation to cut the end manually. This operation

also reduces the volume of the log.

When this operation is mechanized, it is often performed on a line parallel to the sawmill’s main supply line, during a manually controlled operation. Otherwise, in certain sawmills there is a stump reducer with stationary rings on the production line, upstream of the debarking, to remove the section of the log that exceeds a given diameter. In both cases, the operation is strictly mechanical, and it is not optimal for the debarking and sawing lines when there is no accumulation upstream of the primary breakdown.

BID Group claims to have introduced a disruptive solution with its optimized butt flare reducer. This Comact brand system

allows optimal and real time positioning of the cutting tool, composed of four chipping heads, for increased efficiency. Unlike the traditional cutting rings that turn around the log, the four hourglassshaped chipping heads positioned to form a circle, adjust in real time to the log diameter and shreds the exceeding part of the log. This cutting tool configuration allows to maintain the full speed of the line during reduction and also allows reduction on the complete length of the log. The mechanical R&D team worked several months to elaborate the best system to maintain the log position and reduce the log size.

Meanwhile, the optimization and control team worked on the automation of the operation keeping in mind the flare reduction should not impact the debarking and sawing line speed.

The butt flare reducer optimization system is a derivative of the breakdown optimization systems. The geometric log profile is determined by a Comact C2 scanner equipped with 3DPro laser heads. The system will provide an optimal flare reduction decision, targeting a section or the complete log, based on the diameter limitations in your sawmill, your optimization constraints, and your basket of products.

“If you want, the Butt Flare Reducer can also produce rough cylindrical logs,” the manufacturer said.

With the Comact optimization and automation system, the butt flare reducer can position itself in real time whatever the size of the log. This means that the switching of ring sizes based on the log

supply is no longer required, which translates in the reduction of wasted time and risks of accidents.

In addition, it is no longer necessary to sort logs with a flare or stump to isolate and process them in a separate batch.

Finally, the inward pressing system has more presses at the entry level than what is normally found on this type of system.

Side rolls have also been added for a better centering of the log.

The combination of presses and rolls maintains the log securely in position during the reduction process which ensures better debarking and sawing results.

Koskisen planning extensive sawmill investment

Koskisen’s sawn timber is shipped around the world

K

oskisen group is planning an extensive sawmill investment in Järvelä, Finland. The planned investment is valued at an estimated EUR 35–40 million. The intention is to make the investment decision during 2020, and the new mill would start operations in 2022.

The new sawmill annual capacity is 365,000 m³. The new sawmill will also clearly improve productivity and yield by new equipment and digitalisation solutions. The investment will enable the utilisation of a broader range of log diameters in sawmilling, which will lead to larger volumes of wood being used in applications that sequester carbon for a longer period of time.

After the second phase, annual production can be ramped up to 500,000 m3.

The planned investment will increase Koskisen’s export revenues by as much as EUR 40 million a year. A significant part

of this growth will improve wellbeing in the Päijät-Häme region through the payment of salaries, wood purchases and the use of contracting services.

The investment project will involve moving the sawmilling operations next to finishing and further processing, 4 kilometres away from the current location.

This will create synergies in production and significantly reduce the emissions from the sawmill’s internal logistics.

“Our mechanical wood processing cluster and further processing capacity integrated into the sawmilling process in Järvelä are the largest in Finland. Together with more efficient sawing, we will be able to meet the growing demand for wood products better than before. The new site could well be called a mechanical biorefinery; we manufacture panel products and sawn timber, i.e. essentially carbon sinks that capture and store carbon for decades in long-term end uses.

The process produces multiple other fractions that can be used as raw materials by manufacturers of bio-based products and as bio-fuel by energy suppliers,” says Tommi Sneck, Director of Koskisen’s Sawn Timber Industry.

For the project to become reality, additional studies are still required in areas such as improving the infrastructure conditions in Järvelä, obtaining the environmental permit and securing financing.

our Group’s core business and the backbone of our raw material supply. Sawmills pay two thirds of forest owners’ stumpage revenues, employ 25,000 people in their value chains in Finland, operate using almost exclusively domestic inputs and are carbon negative. In addition, sawn timber is one of Finland’s most important export products. Improving the competitiveness of sawmills is paramount not only for Koskisen Group, but also for the forest sector and Finland’s national economy as a whole,” says Koskisen’s CEO Jukka Pahta.

Koskisen is building a local partnership network for the investment project. Berater, a construction management consultancy firm, Sitowise, which is in charge of preparing the environmental permit application, and the LAB University of Applied Sciences have already joined the network.

High-speed optimizing edger systems from EWD impresses in every regard

he first EWD line was commissioned in 2017 in Ireland. With a feed speed of up to 420 m/min and a performance of up to 65 boards per minute, it ranks among the fastest systems of the sawmill specialist from Southern Germany.

“We looked at several EWD optimizing edger systems in Germany. We really liked the solutions,” explains John Murray in regard to the decision to invest in the new EWD line.

The system is impressive in many regards: it is the first that EWD has delivered to Ireland. The schedule was very tight and the space was restricted, and on top of this, Murray had opted for the high-performance OptiDrive TAE edger optimizer with skew and slew sawbox.

Murray Timber operates two sawmills in Ireland with a total consumption of around 520,000 m³ per year. In Ballon, the focus is mainly on lumber for house building and timber construction.

A reducer quad bandsaw with secondary resaw group and two optimizing board edgers are used as the main machines. One of the

two was replaced at the turn of the year 2016/17. The existing edger was rather old and had reached its capacity limits.

In terms of performance, the new OptiDrive edger from EWD replaces both edger systems at Murray’s Ballon site. However, the second machine remains in use for emergencies.

Perfect execution Murray stopped the old edger on December 13, 2016. Production continued for the most part on the main machine and second edger optimizer to minimize losses.

“We were able to maintain 60% of the production. We had a very ambitious, but feasible schedule.

The planning and the execution were perfectly planned by EWD, meaning that we could start up again on January 24 – exactly as planned,” explains Murray. The exchange was thus successfully completed within seven weeks, including a break over the Christmas period. Full performance was reached just one week after commissioning.

The system can process boards with lengths ranging from 3.7 to 6.3 m. “The sawing height is between 16 and 55 mm, whereby

After separation, the boards can be turned on the manipulation table, cross-cutted or rejected via a sorting flap, on demand.

The boards are then transported laterally through the pre-scanning system. This system determines a preliminary board shape and open face, in order to position the board optimally at the infeed table.

A

nyone who took the time to read the comment at the front of this edition would be aware of our predicted course for global green policies moving forward, following the COVID-19 pandemic, which has led to increased government powers.

The argument goes that any forms of green product, particularly green and renewable energies, will be favoured as governments use increased stakes in enterprise to force the environment to the front of the business agenda.

This is likely to be a boon for forestry in general, but particularly for biomass production. And while high-level chippers may be the primary recipient of this new favour, all size-reduction technologies could potentially have an angle into new business.

With a feed opening of 60¾ in x 32 in (154 cm x 81 cm) combined with Peterson’s high lift feed roll for an optional opening up to 44 in (112 cm) high, the 2750D can reduce a diverse range of raw materials.

Equipment manufacturer Rawlings describes itself as a “proven leader” in size reduction technology that specializes in helping business owners with the design of custom wood-waste recovery systems for specific processing needs and budgets.

Rawlings states it can handle every aspect of configuring, building, installing, and supporting a complete materials processing system. Its electric stationary systems come in all shapes and sizes – indoor/outdoor; from simple stand-alone vertical hogs for saw and paper mills, to complete multi-dimensional systems.

“Add a wide variety of available options, and you’ve got the flexibility to customize the perfect wood waste recovery system,” the company stated.

Each system can be designed with work platform decks, choice of belt, chain or vibrating in-feed and out-feed conveyors, metal or magnet protection, product screening and separation all customizable for specific operations.

Markets for wood waste start with feedstock for engineered woods, landscape mulch, soil conditioner, animal bedding, compost additive, sewage sludge, and boiler fuel. All these end uses have similar processing requirements in that the wood waste has to be separated from other wastes, cleaned by removing contaminants and fasteners, and, in some cases, processed through grinding or chipping.

The final use of the wood waste often determines how clean and consistent the feedstock must be (California Integrated Waste

Management 2001).

“During our 40 years designing wood waste grinding systems we have found that most of our clients are looking to get the smallest end particle size on a single pass, onestage pass through the grinder,” Rawlings said. “We often suggest that this is not always the most economical option in the long run.

“Running the grinder and related equipment at full surge capacity results in higher consumption of spare parts and maintenance costs. And depending if you’re using electricity or diesel fuel these costs add up over time.”

During the preliminary design there are many factors that should be considered. Such factors include species of wood, moisture content, diameter and length of incoming wood waste, metal contamination and most importantly the required

end product size.

For high volume high capacity wood handling operations that typically receive a large variety of contaminated materials such as railroad ties, pallets, construction, demolition and hurricane waste, Rawlings recommends wood waste systems to incorporate a combination of equipment. This could include both horizontal and vertical feed grinders.

Horizontal grinders or slow speed grinders are often utilized as the primary grinder while the vertical grinders are used to produce a smaller more consistent particle size. Using metal protection, product screening and separation allows the customer to protect their investment while producing a high-quality consistent end product.

If the wood handling system

W

hen it comes time to add or replace a grinder in your equipment fleet, one of the first questions an operator should consider is: “Do I need a tub grinder or a horizontal grinder?”

It is important to compare the two grinder designs and features for yourself and then determine which is right for a given operation.

Here is a brief overview of things to consider during the buying process.

Safety considerations According to David Steege, recycling account manager at RDO Equipment, properly trained and experienced operators know that if they are working with material that may contain non-organic contaminants (i.e. metal), they need to spend a bit of time sorting and paying close attention to every load they feed into the grinder. This step will help mitigate the risk of thrown objects.

“With tub grinders, features like the patented thrown object restrain system (TORS) found on Vermeer models, can help reduce the amount and distance of thrown objects,” explained Steeg.

“The TORS system has a deflector plate positioned across from the hammer mill to help redirect loose material back inside the tub. Making sure the tub grinder’s bowl is filled to proper capacity – per your operator’s manual – also can help reduce the risk of the grinder throwing material. Since tub grinders use gravity to feed the hammer mill, a full tub can provide an additional layer of protection to help keep material where it belongs.”

To help mitigate the risk of metal contaminants cycling through with organic material, Vermeer grinders (tub and horizontal) can be outfitted with the optional Vermeer Damage Defense System. When a metal contaminant is detected during operations, the Damage Defense system will alert the grinder control and automatically initiate the shutdown process.

Space available Some in the industry may have heard that tub grinders need a lot more room to operate. This is due to the distance thrown objects can travel, but Steege explained that there is more you need to consider

on the topic of working areas.

“Tub grinders will often be used to process a lot of different types of wood waste, and possibly in a setting where the incoming material may not be the cleanest,” he said. “Tubs can handle that type of material, but it’s always advisable to have more open area surrounding the machine.

Otherwise, the operational space needs for horizontal and tub grinders are similar.”

Material sizing Next on your list of considerations is which machine is going to size your material more consistently.

There are several factors to consider when thinking about this area beyond the basic tub or horizontal grinder design.

“Consistency of material sizing can be more related to the quality of the machine and how all of the moving parts work together than whether it’s a tub or horizontal grinder,” said Steege. “The Vermeer duplex drum system and screen configuration optimize the grinders’ performance to produce a quality end product.”

incoming material is a more important consideration.

“When I’m in the field talking to contractors and facility managers about grinders, one of the first things I ask them about is the type and size of material they are going to be grinding. Horizontal grinders are more efficient than tubs at handling longer material because less cutting is required before it can be fed through the machine.

“So, if they are going to be running long branches and tree trunks, a horizontal grinder will likely be their more efficient machine. However, if they are running a bunch of stumps and odd sizes of material, they are going to

want a tub grinder.”

For loose green waste, Steege said either grinder is fine, but tub grinders may be more efficient for their operation.

“With horizontal grinders, the material is being force-fed into the drum, but tubs use gravity, so there are fewer moving parts involved with the process.”

Transportability Depending on the line of work, hauling, or only moving a grinder around a facility is another factor to consider. If working on a big job or frequently needing to reposition the grinder, business owners are going to want to look

at a grinder with tracks. If that’s a need, horizontal grinders like the Vermeer HG6000TX and HG6800TX are good options to consider.

If moving from one site to another, it is important to review any DOT size and weight restrictions in the area to see which unit will be more efficient to haul.

“The sides on Vermeer tub grinders fold in for transporting, which gives them a similar travel width as a comparably-sized horizontal grinder,” Steege explained. “However, tub grinders without a loader are considerably lighter than that same horizontal grinder, which can help reduce transportation expenses.”

To help reduce the likelihood of major machine damage caused by certain metal contaminants entering the hammermill, Vermeer has introduced Damage Defense system – an option now available for tub and horizontal grinders.

If a mill comes in contact with metal while grinding, Damage Defense system will alert the

grinder control and automatically initiate the shutdown process. The system idles the engine down, reverses the infeed or tub and disengages the clutch. Once the contaminant is cleared, normal operation can resume.

“The optional Damage Defense system is ideal for any tub or horizontal grinder operation that may encounter metal mixed in their incoming material,” said

Morbark 2400X

Forestry, biomass and recycling equipment manufacturer, Morbark, debuted the 2400X and 3000X Wood Hog horizontal grinders at this year’s CONEXPO/CON-AGG show in Las Vegas, Nevada. Both machines can be equipped with tracks (XT models), and the 3000X can be built as a fifth-wheel/ dualaxle unit (3000X) or pintle hitch/triaxle.

Ideal for niche markets like municipal solid waste, pallet recycling, sawmills, nurseries and tree care debris, both grinders are perfect for processing yard waste, brush and other mixed woody feedstock into a saleable product.

These grinders are designed to be modular and available in multiple configurations for various applications.

These newest models in the X Series of next-generation horizontal grinders from Morbark follow the successful launches of the 3400X in March 2017 and 6400X in May 2018 and maintain Morbark’s focus on versatility, transportability and operator-

friendliness.

One of the most important features of the 2400X and 3000X is their compact size. Their standard width (2400X: 7 ft 6 in/2.29 m, 3000X: 8 ft 2 in/2.49 m) make them within the legal transport width in any country. The models also share design features like the sloped infeed sides, which improve operator sight lines for more efficient loading of material, and easy-to-load grate systems.

The 2400X ranges in horsepower from 188-203 hp (140.2-151.4 kW), while the 3000X has engine options from 350577 hp (260-430 kW). Like all of Morbark Wood Hog models, both the 2400X and 3000X is also available with electric power.

2400X Key Features The infeed system consists of one 20 in (50.8 cm) diameter top compression feed roll with internal drive and a 53 in wide x 8 ft 2 in (134.6 cm x 2.49 m) smooth rubber belt or optional steel chain infeed conveyor. The 2400X has a 9 ft long x 52 in wide (2.74 m x 132.08 cm) infeed floor, infeed flares and cleated belly belt and maintenance access doors. The manual folding infeed tray is adjustable to various positions and adds 3 ft (0.91 m) to the infeed length when open or closes to contain small material.

The large, proven design, 22 ft x 49.25 in (55.88 cm x 125.1 cm) downturn hammermill system, plate and pin style, with 22 singlebolt inserts set in a V pattern, improves feeding characteristics, ease of maintenance and durability.

Routine maintenance and grate changes are easily conducted by a single operator due to the 93 gallon (352 litre) fuel tank, which pivots away from the machine to allow easy access, and the single, side-load grate system (AR450 steel grates are available in multiple sizes and patterns).

The 36 in (91.44 cm) wide chevron discharge conveyor belt is available in a single section stationary 9 ft 6 in (2.9 m) height conveyor or folding 14 ft 6 in (4.42 m) height conveyor and can be equipped with optional magnetic head drum for ferrous metal removal.

The plate and pin style, up-turn hammermill system measures 32 ft x 58.5 in (81.28 cm x 149 cm) and has 18 double-edged replaceable inserts and 18 rakers.

The discharge system consists of a hydraulically driven, horizontal 42 in x 14’2 in (106.68 cm x 4.3 m) aggregate belt conveyor discharging onto a 36 in (91.44

Jenz presented the BA 916 D biomass processor for the first time over summer; it is the successor to the previous BA 915 and is being released with new technical highlights. Though it has hardly changed optically from its predecessor, the new model is no longer recognizable in everyday operation because of the numerous detailed improvements, according to the manufacturer.

Since its introduction at IFAT 2016, the BA 915 has been operating in industry, being commended for its economic efficiency and its innovative maintenance concept, with a sideways-swivelling conveyor.

Building on these product strengths, Jenz has used the

statutory engine conversion from Stage IV Final to Stage V for a relaunch.

“The main development results from updating the control,” explains Jenz Product Manager Dominik Meden.

The innovative easy2 controller, which has been used in the chipper for the past three years, and the additional keypad (the easy2HOTKEY-Box), have already proven themselves in the compact BA 615 and offer new operating and diagnostic options, such as the unique driver assistance systems.

“These systems are being used for the first time on a shredder,” Meden said. “They simplify daily tasks for the machine operator enormously.”

Maintenance access for the new BA 916 has therefore been optimized once again. The system of the swivelling tool box, which has already been proven on mobile chippers, is being used for the first time.

“All-in-all, this provides an optimal maintenance cycle: first the conveyor belt, which can be swivelled sideways, is opened at the push of a button,” Meden said. “Afterwards, thanks to the new integrated professional tool system, the operator has direct access to tools and spare parts in an ergonomic arrangement. There is no need for tiresome carrying around and the maintenance time is reduced enormously.”

Constantly changing boundary conditions on the biomass market requires enormous flexibility in the machine park. At the same time, the demands on the quality level remain high.

The new BA 916 offers programmable shredding modes.

These are pre-set at the factory but can be individually adapted to the desired starting material by the operator.

“Anyone who frequently processes green waste, for example, can now call up the optimum machine settings at the touch of a button. As a result, valuable time can be saved and the machine can call up its full output independently of the operator and always produce consistent quality,” explained Meden.

uppliers of skidding technology continue to challenge themselves to find the ultimate balance between agility in the forest and the necessary strength, robustness and power to do one the forestry sector’s most thankless task – picking up after the feller bunchers.

Similarly to the felling machines, skidders are required to move nimbly through the stands to collect their loads but the focus has historically been on growing the power to shift more mass. These days, contractors are less inclined to value the load moved in a single trip over the ability to complete more loads using a more agile machine.

What’s more, they are acutely aware of the struggle to attract and keep good machine operators, which is best done – from a machine perspective – by providing a more comfortable ride.

In this article, we look at a the leading suppliers and how they are finding the balance for operators in this challenging environment.

Powerful and reliable, the John Deere L-Series II Skidders provide loggers with an equipment solution to help them overcome “any challenge” they encounter on the job, the manufacturer claimed.

Comprised of the 640L-II, 748LII, 848L-II, and 948L-II models, the L-Series II line is equipped with impressive horsepower, consistent engine speed, a leading power-toweight ratio and superb pulling power, resulting in increased responsiveness and efficiency.

The L-Series II machines feature a simplified design, with over 1,600 component changes.

By eliminating several mechanical components, these machines are easier to service and maintain.

“These changes make the machine more reliable, which saves time and money on maintenance.”

an increased grapple squeeze force of up to 10%. This provides constant pressure so operators are less likely to lose a log, even if a load gets jarred. A variety of

grapple options, including the 17.5 ft2 grapple on the 648L-II or a 22.3 ft2 option on the 948L-II, deliver more wood to the landing with fewer skids.

The easy-to-use Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) combines the efficiency of a direct-drive transmission with the smoothness of a hydrostatic drive.

The CVT provides more power to the ground by sensing the load, delivering more torque and tractive effort as needed to maintain the operator’s wanted speed.

By controlling the engine speeds, the CVT feature reduces engine wear while providing excellent fluid economy.

Additionally, with CVT, the operator no longer has to shift gear. Instead, the operator simply sets the maximum speed and CVT will do the rest.

Designed by loggers for loggers, the L-Series II models have spacious cabs to provide a dynamic and comfortable experience. The cabs include a good deal of storage space, configurable controls and a highly effective HVAC system. The armrest-mounted electrohydraulic controls provide accessible, handfinger operation of all machine functions while the joystick steering provides smooth control of steering, direction and ground speed. Reducing neck strain, an optional rotating high-back seat improves rearward visibility to the grapple. Six high-intensity halogen lights are standard, ideal for work in lowlight conditions.

Designed with larger components, the rugged OutboardExtreme axles, standard on the 848L-II and 948L-II models and optional on the 748L-II machine, provide maximum jobsite durability while the heavier weight boosts machine stability. A pressurized

continuous-lube system and independent axle filters extends wear life up to 15,000 hours.

For improved durability in the woods, the grapples are equipped with strong box-style tongs with harder wear surfaces, maximizing strength and increasing the component life. The straight bushings at the grapple, arch, boom and blade joints can be quickly replaced and deliver a long, trouble-free life. Additionally, grease-through pins boast increased resistance to dust, rust and debris. Finally, the redesigned frame and arch are reinforced, improving durability.

The L-Series II models are built with serviceability in mind. Large panels are easily unlatched for fast, wide-open access to filters and critical components. Grease points for the boom and arch are easily reached from ground level, while extended service intervals help to further simplify maintenance and reduce expense. Window area has been increased to provide unmatched visibility on all sides. The rear windows have been lowered, and front lower windows have been added to provide a better line of sight to all wheels. The updated interior uses a mix of molded plastic panels and removable steel panels. The moulded, easy to clean rubber floor mat has durable checkered aluminum plates at the high touch points.

The new and improved Turnaround system for H-series lets the operator rotate the seat 220°.

Effortless pushbutton controls lock and unlock the seat in any position in the range. The operator has full control of all machine functions

including drive controls. The 220° seat rotation improves operator visibility, greatly reduces neck strain, and allows the operator to easily exit either side of the cab.

A durable, heavy duty air ride suspension seat with state-ofthe-art heating and cooling keeps the operator comfortable all day long. The reclining seat is fully adjustable with seat angle and seat extension adjustment. Tilt up adjustable armrests along with adjustable lumbar support all contribute to operator comfort. now infinitely variable from zero to 100% and a new defrost option is available which cycles the A/C on and off automatically to keep the windows clear. A climate-controlled cup holder is connected to the system to heat or cool drinks.

Operator controls are located on the armrests and include many new features. Differential lock buttons are on the joystick and can engage front and rear separately.

LED lights above the buttons illuminate when they are active. A cruise control button maintains the current engine speed allowing the operator to release the pedal. The grapple constant pressure button also turns on an LED indicator on the joystick alerting the operator that the constant pressure is activated.

Other features of the H-series

To tilt the cab, simply loosen the locking plate bolts, slide the locking plate down, and turn the pins to the unlock position. Removing and installing the sweep bolts is easier with a new two-piece design.

Fine adjustments can be made by loosening the additional sweep bolt. New keyed washers further simplify the assembly.

Increasingly, the industry’s purpose-built forestry machines are able to add value to the saleable product at roadside through a preliminary level of processing. Certain buyers are prepared to pay well for this primary level of upgraded material.

AE GROUP is ramping up its pace in innovation, launching four new models onto the market of excavator mulchers.

Alongside the new BL3/EX/VT, three upgraded versions of existing models were released.

Here are the details on the new arrivals:

The BL3/EX/VT joins the series of FAE mulchers with Bite Limiter technology, launched at Agritechnica in 2019.

The Bite Limiter technology features special steel profiles that limit the depth of blade action, reducing the demand for power while guaranteeing speed and exceptional performance.

The machine boasts a 110 cc “VT” (Variable Torque) motor, which significantly improves mulching performance, increasing its torque when necessary and minimizing rotor stalling conditions.

It is equipped with the new BL blades, made from heat-treated forged steel. These blades can be re-sharpened again and again, which means they can be used for a greater number of hours, thus reducing operating costs.

he all-new Komatsu WA800-8 rewrites the rules for stability, giving the operator a safe and comfortable work environment.

With a 115 tonnes operating weight, the WA800-8 allows for 20,700 kg rated load capacity in a standard boom configuration.

Make the grade faster with advances in bulldozer technology

I

ntegrated 3D grade control revolutionized earthmoving nearly a decade ago. Today it estimated that about half of all dozers sold are equipped with autonomous grade control technology that uses GPS to complete jobs faster and with greater accuracy, eliminating the need for rework.

Whether you call it Intelligent Machine Control (Komatsu), Cat GRADE (Caterpillar) or SmartGrade (Deere), buyers can expect to pay a considerable premium for the technology, which also requires an additional investment in a base station.

“The time, material, and machine wear savings that come with grade control solutions quickly recover the premium paid for grade control solutions,” said Sean Mairet, product marketing manager, grade control, John Deere Construction & Forestry.

for Komatsu America. “The more you use it, the faster the payback”, he added.

Adoption of grade control technology Adoption is being driven by a shortage of skilled operators.

“Automation gets an operator up to speed and more productive, faster,” said Sam Meeker, product marketing manager for Caterpillar.

“For more experienced operators the technology makes their lives easier. Their shoulder and elbow don’t hurt as much.”

According to Mairet, a common mistake is confusing 2D and 3D grade control capabilities. “2D or entry-level grade control solutions do not use a design plan for controlling the blade. 3D solutions make use of an engineered design surface and control to a specified elevation on complex projects or models,” he said.

Meeker believes 2D technology is a smart choice for contractors working on simple jobs like flat house pads in a subdivision, while 3D technology will pay off for larger and more complex jobs.

“Have a conversation with yourself and your dealer to analyze what applications could benefit from 2D and 3D technology,” said Meeker.

on the jobsite and make it easier for contractors to upgrade from 2D to 3D. Here’s the latest on dozer innovation from Komatsu America, John Deere and Caterpillar.

Komatsu America recently introduced Intelligent Machine Control 2.0 with the launch of the D71PXi-24 hydrostatic transmission (HST) dozer at CONEXPO-CON/ AGG 2020. It features Proactive Dozing Control logic, a fullyintegrated dozing control system that measures the position of the machine, the elevation of the tracks and allows the dozer to measure the terrain and use track-level data to plan the next pass. “Proactive dozing has shown up to a 40 percent increase in productivity than previous intelligent machine control,” said Jon Jennings, product marketing manager for HST dozers at Komatsu.

The technology is designed to increase the utilization of intelligent machine control beyond finish grading. Automation can be used any time, for example when performing general site clean-up or backfilling trenches.

Lift Layer control automatically spreads fill from existing terrain with a press of a button. “You can use this automatic control to spread up in very precise layers so you get the consistent thicknesses

for quality compaction, “said Anetsberger.

Tilt-Control steering automatically tilts the blade to the left or right to keep the dozer from veering one way or another, something operators previously had to focus on. Lastly, quick surface creation creates a temporary design surface that enables operators to take on work not in the original plan.

John Deere provides customers with a range of options to engage with grade control technology, starting with cost-effective, entrylevel solutions and then growing their technology use as their comfort level increases with grade control technology. SmartGrade 3D dozers are available on 650-950 Power Angle Tilt (PAT) models and the new 700L/750L. “With the entry level and premium options offered by John Deere, virtually any job can benefit from grade control technology,” said Mairet. “John Deere’s SmartGrade-ready machines including a slope control option that is a great solution when a 3D engineered plan is not available, or in areas where satellite coverage is inadequate. Premium SmartGrade solutions make the most sense for engineered projects that have tight tolerances and demanding schedules,” he added.

According to Mairet, SmartGrade can improve the performance of less experienced operators by controlling the blade so the operator can focus on

managing material. In addition, SmartGrade will automatically lift the blade up if the machine senses track slip, improving the operator’s productivity while reducing excess track wear on the machine.

CAT 3D dozers boast a 50 percent improvement in productivity versus traditional grading, but “it’s related

directly to the butt in the seat,” said Meeker. “Newer operators can see a 200-300 percent improvement in productivity, while experienced operators see less improvement.” CAT GRADE with slope assist (2D) and Cat GRADE with 3D -- both include autonomous grading. Once the blade is set, the system holds the blade. CAT 3D dozers require 80 percent fewer operator inputs than traditional dozers. Control buttons are integrated into the joystick for easy operation.

The latest generation of D5, D6 and D8 dozers include factory installed grade control, a newly designed display and better software. “On our latest 3D model, a customer can create their own design right in the monitor.”

According to Meeker, their 2D systems are very inexpensive, and can be easily be upgraded

to 3D through their dealers.

Factory Attachment Ready Option (ARO) provides optimal mounting locations, brackets, and hardware and simplifies installation of any grade control system.

Meeker believes that when it comes to grade control, buyers should look at not only how the machine performs in the dirt, but in wet sand and different materials.

“It’s one thing to have a grade control system that works in dirt, it is another to have one that works in wet sand and fines, different materials.

But he loves the challenge, too. “It’s a tough environment but very rewarding,” he explains. “To me it’s not as much about the money as it is about the challenge. I’m always looking for some way to do something better.”

Courtenay is located about halfway up the east coast of Vancouver Island. A&K Timber operates as far north as Port Hardy and as far south as Nanaimo. The company harvests 500,000 cubic meters (653,975 cubic yards) of wood annually, mainly logs that will be exported through the Port of Vancouver to over 100 countries around the world.

Vancouver Island is home to some of the largest and oldest trees in the world, including Douglas fir. A&K Timber harvests predominantly second-growth Douglas fir as well as hemlock and western red cedar. “It’s satisfying to come back to a place I logged 20 years ago and see 30- to 40-foottall second-growth Douglas fir,” says Johnson. “I’m an avid fisherman, so when I come out here and see the rivers and scenery,it feels like home.”

Eighty percent of the wood the company harvests is smallerdiameter, second-growth timber, although it also cuts old-growth hemlock balsam. “It’s old and decaying, so we’re trying to harvest it to get some young trees growing there and create a healthier

forest,” says Johnson. “We are also responsible for keeping the ditches clean, the water flowing, and the creeks free of sediment that would affect the fish. We take pride in being a steward of the forest.”

Strong track record of reliability Johnson started A&K Timber shortly after getting out of high school in 1994. Trained as a mechanic, he began logging instead. His two uncles were nearing retirement, and they rented their machines to him. Johnson approached private landowners and slowly built his business while learning to hand-fell and skid wood. Before long he had more work than he could handle, so he hired a second employee and used contractors for mechanical harvesting.

“After a while, I thought, ‘I’m spending all this money to hire someone to run a processor and feller buncher — why don’t I just buy my own machines?’” remembers Johnson. “It can’t be that complicated. The next thing you know I’m buying a processor and feller buncher, and then a skidder and log loader, and we’re doing it all — felling, yarding, processing, and loading.”

Today A&K Timber employs 80 people and runs 60 pieces of forestry equipment, including John Deere G-Series Swing Machines configured for processing, log loading, and roadbuilding, as well as an 859M Tracked Feller Buncher.

It gives us the flexibility to not have to go all the way down. That’s a strong feature.”

Since mid-January, Anna Fredriksson is the new Plant manager at Komatsu Forest in Umeå. Anna is also the first woman ever to become a Plant manager within the global Komatsu Group.

“It has been my driving force to work with what I think is fun, which is technology, without thinking so much about the expectations on me from the outside world. The fact that the management chose me for this assignment even though I was about to go on parental leave, further reinforced my perception of the company’s good values regarding equality”, Anna says.

Anna has a mechanical engineering degree and joined Komatsu Forest in 2011 when she did her master thesis while working in production.

She then joined the quality department, where over the years she has worked with quality investigations and product quality, and then became head of the quality department in 2017. At the same time, she took a place in the factory’s management team where she further strengthened her insights regarding the entire production process.

“With Anna’s commitment, competence in various business issues, collaborative skills and her broad experience of working with quality issues, which is our most important focus area, it was a natural step to the new role as Plant manager,” says Martin Ärlestig, former Plant Manager who now becomes Global Production

Anna took up the post at a very special time. Despite the current state of the Corona pandemic, the company has been able to keep up a relatively normal business after all. In addition, the major challenge at the moment is to maintain and improve current production while looking ahead and preparing for the move to a new factory and the changes that will entail with a new, more modern production.

“With the new factory, we will take a huge step forward, that will allow us to develop the working environment, the quality and the work processes, which gives us a unique opportunity to improve the entire production”, says Anna.

Spruce bark beetle and its impact on wood markets The European spruce bark beetle has caused severe damage in spruce forests in Central Europe, particularly in the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

B

etween 2017 and 2019, over 270 million m3 of standing timber in Central Europe was damaged by a combination of factors: primarily, changing climate conditions that featured hotter, drier summers and warmer winters.

In combination with frequent windstorms, this created ideal conditions for the spread of spruce bark beetles, especially at lower elevations.

The damage is across many countries, including Poland, Switzerland, Slovakia, Italy and Sweden, but the most severe losses have been in Germany, the Czech Republic and Austria. The outbreak in these three countries is so severe that FEA analysis predicts that the killed timber volume from the European spruce bark beetle will eventually exceed that of the British Columbia Interior’s mountain pine beetle outbreak.

Sawmilling: The increased salvage of dying and dead spruce timber will create more sawlogs than the sawmilling industry can process, not only in the three impacted countries, the Czech Republic, Germany and Austria, but also beyond their borders given that some logs are exported to other European countries. This will result in certain market implications and shifting trade trends through the first half of this decade and beyond — changes that will alter overall market dynamics and disrupt producers and exporters in other regions.

The sheer volume of damaged timber harvested in Central Europe has yielded logs of relatively good quality so far. Beetle-killed logs that are harvested in the winter for processing are of very high quality — almost like “fresh-cut” green sawlogs. Logs harvested in the summer, however, are more prone to blue stain and checking, and rot can even occur. The worst time for beetle wood quality is July to September due to the higher temperatures and blue stain, and especially if it rains.

Many sawmill companies are betting that the surplus timber will be around for some time — enough to justify adding sawmill capacity or even building greenfield sawmills. Up to a dozen sawmilling

companies have planned for, started or even completed new capacity installations to process incremental sawlogs from the damaged timber by the end of 2021; if there is any question about how long the storm- and beetledamaged timber is going to be around in Central Europe, these investors are providing the answer.

We expect at least 2 million m3 of new sawmill capacity based on confirmed projects, although others are still in the planning stages. These sawmill capacities are being constructed based on the potential for increased harvesting of damaged timber in the future and a likely glut of low-cost sawlogs.

Lumber production: The increased availability of lowcost damaged timber will lead to higher lumber production in Central Europe. With the massive timber salvage producing a glut of sawlogs of varying quality, there has been downward pressure on sawlog prices in Central Europe.

Germany has seen a steady decline in its sawlog prices since early 2018 due to spruce bark beetle and storm wood availability, with prices there down almost 50% by the end of 2019; this approaches levels in the U.S. South (the region with some of the lowest log costs in North America).

The current price of sawloggrade timber is considered close to the cost of harvesting and delivery to sawmills, pointing to scant potential for a reduction in log prices.

However, lower-quality logs are being produced with blue stain, checking and even decay, and

selling at large discounts, leading some mills to process these logs as well.

Since the salvage program is likely to be in place with high volumes for some time before it eventually slows down, domestic spruce sawlog prices will probably remain near current levels. This will provide central European sawmills with a competitive advantage in both domestic and export markets.

With rising volumes of distressed sawlogs at low prices, there will be an increase in central European lumber production.

Existing mills are experiencing a critical shortage of skilled workers, so adding capacity is difficult (aside from extending shifts or operating on Saturdays). However, we expect total lumber production in the three impacted countries to generally expand (aside from 2020 output slippage due to COVID-19) before production eventually eases back toward pre-beetle levels near the end of the decade.

This means that sawmills in Germany, the Czech Republic and Austria should remain the low-cost operators in Europe, and should be able to access most (if not all) export markets competitively and with positive margins.

Lumber exports: Most of the top-quartile central European sawmills are exportoriented, meaning they have kilns as well as planers. With the acceleration of the spruce beetle salvage in Europe providing mills with low-cost logs, a higher proportion of production at these large-scale mills will likely be directed to export markets that require planed lumber (especially

the U.S., but also China, Australia, the United Kingdom and others).

According to FEA’s 2019 Global Sawmill Cost Benchmarking Report, central European sawmills are among the lowest-cost lumber suppliers of dimension lumber in export markets such as the U.S. South. This will enable European sawmills to gain market share in the U.S. at the expense of higher-cost Canadian and U.S. producers if they need to export increased lumber volumes outside Europe. From a European exporter’s perspective, the U.S. market also has the advantage of being accessible by both break-bulk vessels and containers.

Ultimately, central European mills will select lumber export markets based on net mill returns and market risk. The U.S. looks to be a very good fit for central

European mills in an era of spruce bark beetles, but it will depend on net lumber returns and prices relative to other markets.

Lumber exports to China are also expected to continue rising.

In 2019, lumber exports from Germany totaled 692,000 m3 (versus only 154,000 m3 in 2018) and, in the first three months of 2020, reached 185,000 m3 (60% higher than a year earlier). Similar to exports to the U.S., trade to China will be dependent on conditions in other markets (MENA and Japan, for instance).

Effectively, this means that central European mills will be a threat to high-cost lumber producers in other parts of Europe — and to suppliers in export markets — for at least the first half of this decade.

Log exports: In 2019, log export markets proved to be an important release valve for excess salvage spruce logs that were surplus to domestic mills’ needs in Germany and the Czech Republic. This trend will continue throughout the salvage harvest, especially since beetle-killed logs are being harvested at close to cost levels in Central Europe, allowing for exported logs to be competitively priced for volume sales to China.

In the current year, the rise in log exports is expected to pause due to curtailments related to the COVID-19 pandemic; however, this assumption could quickly change if China’s log demand picks up.

Note that Germany and the Czech Republic accounted for 80% of log exports from Europe to China in 2019, a proportion we expect to

grow in 2020 and beyond.

Assuming that markets return to more normal conditions later this year, log exports from Central Europe should continue to rise — perhaps even sharply, depending on market demand, container rates and container availability. Based on the potential harvest of damaged timber and the capacity limits of the central European sawmill industry to process the damaged logs, rising log export volumes could result in major disruptions to global trade flows.

Germany continued to export logs at record pace in early 2020, with almost 50% of the volume destined for China The log market in Germany has been extremely volatile in the first half of 2020, with high demand from the export market and a tight supply of fresh green logs.

When the Coronavirus Epidemic forced sawmills to close in March, domestic demand for sawlogs fell and the price increases seen earlier in the quarter reversed – resulting in both domestic and export prices falling.

Sawlog prices varied throughout the country depending on the level of local supply, the

quality of the beetle-killed timber, the availability of fresh logs, and the competition from log exporters.

Log prices also varied due to contract volumes and spot purchases. Towards the end of the quarter, spot prices fell to levels that barely covered the costs for logging and hauling the timber. The 1Q/20’s estimated average sawlog price was an increase from the previous quarter but substantially lower than the 1Q/19, according to the WRQ. Softwood log exports

from Germany have increased dramatically over the past five years, from 2.1 million m3 in 2014 to 7.4 million m3 in 2019. The oversupply of logs resulted in record high exports in the 3Q/19 followed by two quarters of q-o-q declines (see chart). Despite the reduction in exports during the winter months, total shipments during the first four months of 2020 were up 38% as compared to the same period in 2019.

China has quickly become the largest market for German logs,

accounting for almost 50% of all exported logs so far in 2020.

From January to April this year, almost 2.4 million m3 of softwood logs were shipped to China. Log exportation from Europe to Asia is a recent trend. As late as 2017, there were practically no shipments of German logs outside of Europe.

1. By communicating with the client, the CTL harvester estimates the quantity and the quality of the trunks needed to fill the client’s order.

2. The harvester calculates the optimal way to buck each trunk into logs. Through careful and deliberate processing, the harvester uses as much of the valuable raw material as possible.

3. As it moves in the forest, the harvester covers its trail with delimbed branches and tops. This decreases surface pressure and reduces soil damage.

4. The CTL method leaves the nutrient-rich leaves, needles, limbs, and tops in the forest for the next generation of trees to use. Part of this slash can also be gathered for bioenergy use.

5. The forwarder transports each timber grade to its pile on the roadside. The two-part CTL machine team is consistent, fuelefficient and easier to manage.

6. Each timber grade is transported directly to its destination: logs to sawmills, veneer logs to the veneer mill and pulpwood to the paper or pulp mill.

7. In the CTL method, logs destined, for example, for a sawmill are sorted in batches by timber grade. When all the logs arriving at a sawmill are of similar diameter, the batch can be processed faster.
