A global industry?

A

t the risk of repeating myself, I’m going to have a little gush about the summer finally arriving in the Northern Hemisphere. There is something about the long evenings and the sunshine of a northern summer that those who enjoy more consistent seasons of the south will have trouble understanding.

At the risk of taking a dark turn in an otherwise upbeat editorial, I can’t help but contrast this attitude against that of US President Donald Trump, who recently thumbed his nose at one of the great forestry capitals, Canada, and has been combative with Germany, host of the impending Interforst show.

For us in the north, summer brings with it the conference season, which, as a forestry hack, provides the peaks across the heights of summer – myself and my IFI colleagues become big kids in the world’s largest toyshops, full of heavy machinery and cutting edge technology.

He seems to loathe foreign places and different people, with his offshore visits serving to throw his weight around and curry favour with his rustbelt support base. As head of the world’s largest economy, Trump seems happy to use economic influence to win a better deal for the US in bilateral trade deals at the expense of global growth.

Not that these shows always brings nice weather, mind you. Last year’s trip to Sweden for Elmia saw this ill-equipped editor lose a shoe having gone knee-deep into a bog before even reaching the showground, while my briefly amused colleague was forced to test just how waterproof his boots were after copying my efforts into a foot-deep, woodchip-concealed puddle. As it turns out, his boots aren’t water proof if the water comes in at the ankle.

Outliers such as this, aside, forestry shows are generally a wonderful place to see cool things, talk to good people, and drink cold beer. We don’t get out as often as we’d like, with our masters preferring to keep us chained to our typewriters, but we’re looking forward to seeing the inside of at least two conferences over the next three months.

From those we’ve spoken to at previous events, this feeling is widely held.

On one hand, those places that hold themselves out as forestry strongholds, love to host these events to greet fellow industry professionals from around the globe and show off their local industry. Those visiting are there to share experiences, see something different and hopefully learn new and innovation business practices. Both camps thrive on forming international relationships that increase the wealth being created.

Were the international economy a zero-sum game, this would make perfect sense. But it’s not. By stifling the growth of those less prosperous, all he is doing is reducing the pie that the world is sharing.

His ego may be happy to have a larger slice of international wealth as it stands today but people (read: voters) demand constant enhancements to their quality of life, especially those most in need to whom Trump has promised plenty.

The only way to deliver more is this scenario is to create more to share out. When the sideshow gets old and the easy economic wins have dried up, this will become painfully clear.

Personally, I’d like to see that inevitability brought forward and I can think of no better way than inviting the US President along to Interforst in Muncich, for starters. A couple of cold beers and a German sausage or two with the international forestry community would no doubt open his mind.

Forestry debris causes major damage on NZ East coast Masses of forestry debris that flooded a small town north of Gisborne has created a NZ$10 million cleanup, but questions have been raised about who should pay. Heavy rain caused water to flood through Tolaga Bay, crashing through homes when the Mangaheia River burst its banks on Monday reports Friday Offcuts.

It took slash – forestry debris – in its wake damaging roads and bridges and piling up on farms and in gullies. Gisborne Mayor Meng Foon said while the forestry sector would support in what he expected to be a NZ$10m cleanup, ratepayers would have to help pay. Foon said most of the flood damage affected roads and bridges.

When asked if forestry should foot the whole bill for clean-up efforts, Foon said forestry had been supportive in the past. The council began looking into the issue of slash in the wake of ex-tropical Cyclone Cook in April last year.

As of two months ago a national environment standard meant there were stricter planting and fresh water rules. “We will be making sure that we implement those,” Foon said.

Forestry Minister Shane Jones called the debris-strewn flood an extraordinarily severe weather event and a “wake-up call”. The Government, he said, would decide in the next week or so what it could do to help. We’ve got to do better. I don’t know of anyone in the forest sector who does not accept that their practices need to improve.”

New Zealand Forest Owners Association communications manager Don Carson said the land which held slash and timbers was some of the most “highly

erodible” land in the world. Similar incidences were known to happen but no landscape could have tolerated such a high amount of isolated rainfall. The area was forested in “less enlightened times”.

Carson said anyone who caused

environmental damage should not buck their obligations, nor should anyone be held totally accountable.

“I do know that companies in the Nelson area assisted in the cleanup there. I would expect the same sort of thing to happen in Tolaga Bay.”

Irish forestry could double in value Coillte predicts Irish forestry will double in value to nearly €5bn. But chief executive Fergal Leamy insists State is slow to embrace sector’s potential reports Eoin BurkeKennedy – Irish Times.

The chief executive of Coillte estimates that output from Irish forestry will double in value to nearly €5 billion over the next 10 years, as the current crop of trees mature and the timber is harvested.

However, Fergal Leamy, who took over at the helm of the State’s forestry company in 2015, said the State is still failing to embrace its forestry potential, with forestation levels and afforestation (planting) rates well below the European average despite the fact that Ireland enjoys faster tree growth than most EU rivals.

Around 11 per cent of the Republic’s land mass is forested compared to a European average

of 38 per cent, while around 4,000 hectares a year are being converted to forest, significantly below the Government’s target of 7,000 hectares.

“There’s not an acceptance of forestry in this country. If you look at other countries it is so embraced as a sustainable industry, an industry that adds economic and environmental value,” Mr Leamy said, hinting that other sectoral interests still dominate the Government’s agenda.

“We just don’t get it yet,” he said, noting the planned expansion in agricultural and the likely growth in carbon emissions that implies will need to be offset by a major afforestation programme.

Traditionally Coillte, in contrast to its counterparts aboard, has not undertaken afforestation projects because the economics have not made sense, but Mr Leamy believes this will soon change as Coillte’s

financial position improves and the Government considers allowing it access to grants.

He was speaking as the semiState announced its full-year results for 2017, which showed it had doubled its operating cash from €15 million in 2016 to €30 million in 2017 on foot of record revenues of nearly €300 million.

As a result, it paid the Government a dividend of €8 million, 29 per cent up on the previous year .

Five-year plan Coillte is in the middle of a major five-year restructuring process aimed reducing its reliance on large-scale land transactions and focusing on its three core business divisions – forestry, wind energy and wood panel manufacturing.

Mr Leamy said €20 million had been shaved off its cost base,

principally by reducing head office staff from 100 to 17 and reducing the group’s reliance on outside consultants .

“We really simplified what we were doing. We’re not that complicated a business – we grow trees, we sell logs, we manufacture timber products and we build renewable energy wind farms,” he said.

His plan is to create an annual return on assets for the State of 5 per cent by 2020 – last year it was 3 per cent.

Operating cash from its forestry division increased by 13 per cent to €25.7 million driven by an increase in sawlog sales volumes and improved sawlog prices, Coillte’s figures show.

The company has begun the process of putting up for sale its stake in four wind farms it Codeveloped with ESB, USE and Bord Na Móna, while it has identified 25 sites that are suitable for largescale landforms and will later this year seek a strategic partner to develop the sites, which will have the potential to generate electricity for up to one million homes.

Coillte is expected to generate up to €125 million from the sale of its wind energy four projects, with the cash recycled through the business.

“The business is seeing good momentum in 2018 with a strong performance in the first quarter,” Mr Leamy said.

“This is a crucial year for Coillte as we expect to see a step change in earnings following an intense phase of organisational restructuring and investment,” he said.

PF Olsen replacement CEO announced Forestry services firm PF Olsen Ltd has announced a replacement CEO for Peter Clark when he steps down at the end of September this year.

Te Kapunga Dewes will join the Rotorua headquartered company as CEO. Mr Dewes has a strong background in forestry and wood processing and for 7 years was the NZ General Manager for Contract Resources, a substantial firm servicing the energy sector.

He has a degree in Forestry from Canterbury University, and an MBA with distinction from Waikato University.

The John Deere 910G

John Deere 1010G Has a load rating of 11 tons. The engine has significantly more power (131 kW) and torque (730 Nm) than the previous 1010E model. The 1010G is available with six or eight wheels and with a narrow or wide load space (3.5 m² or 4.0 m²). The model can be equipped with either a fixed or a leveling and rotating cabin, and the CF5 boom has three different reach alternatives.

The shorter wheelbase has been achieved by moving the rear axle forward by 40 cm, thereby allowing the load space to remain unchanged. The machine’s stability remains good and its agility improves, which is beneficial particularly in thinnings.

LOGGING & BIOMASS NEWS John Deere 1010G is available with the long bogie version.

The distance between the front and rear wheel hubs in the rear bogie increases to 1890 mm, i.e. 390 mm longer than in the standard model. The power train and turning radius are the same as with the standard HD portal bogie-equipped machine. The ground pressure of the rear chassis equipped with tracks is 14% smaller compared to an ordinary bogie axel.

The low ground pressure of the machine’s front and rear chassis make the machine an excellent choice for logging on soft terrain.

Image Systems AB acquires Limab Oy Image Systems AB has concluded an agreement to acquire 100 percent of the shares outstanding of the Finnish company Limab Oy. Limab Oy, with offices in St Michel and Helsingfors, is active in contactless measurement technology with applications in the sawmill industry, thereby complementing business area RemaSawco with products as well as market shares, especially in Finland, the Baltic States and Russia.

Limab Oy has 22 employees with revenue in the financial year 1 March 2017 – 28 February 2018 of approximately MSEK 56 and profit after taxes of almost MSEK 15. The company is acquired on a debt-free basis MEUR 6.1 (approximately MSEK 62.8). The initial purchase money amounts to MEUR 4.0 (approximately MSEK 41.2).

Additional purchase money will be paid over a period of two years on the condition that Limab Oy’s current shareholders remain employees of the company. The acquisition will be financed by a bank loan in the amount of MSEK 41.2 and a seller’s promissory note in the amount of MSEK 21.6. The debt financing may at a later date be refinanced in the form of a new issue of shares. The transaction is expected to have a positive effect on Image System’s earnings per share in the current year and going forward.

The transaction was expected to close on 8 June 2018. ”We are very happy to integrate ourselves with Image Systems and its subsidiary RemaSawco, a leading company in our industry, with which we share the vision of leading the development of the

Junnikkala Ltd. invests in its Kalajoki and Oulainen sawmills Junnikkala Ltd. is growing its sawn wood production in Kalajoki, Finland, and increasing the drying capacity by acquiring the first TC continuous kiln in Finland and installing X-ray scanners on its segregation lines within its sawmills.

The upcoming drying facility is the only one in Finland which allows users to combine different types and lengths of wood. The

works of the drying facility will begin in the summer, equipment deliveries will arrive in October and the new drying facility will be in operation in March 2019. And as result of the investment, the combined production volume of Kalajoki and Oulainen sawmills will rise to over 400,000 cubic meters.

TC continuous kiln will enable more flexible production and increase the total drying capacity

at the sawmill in Kalajoki, where it will replace older drying plants.

The company will also renew the shredding by installing X-ray instruments on the log sorting lines at the Oulu sawmill in August and Kalajoki in September. Because the X-ray measurement enables precise bark measurement, we can make better use of the raw material. Considering the smaller tree structure in our area, we can

measure the parts of a different tree trunk more precisely and Junnikkala can take advantage of the special sizes and treetops available.

Valutec Ltd. supplies the canal dryer to Junnikkala Oy and the indicators are supplied by the Finnish Limab Ltd.

Canfor Southern Pine invests $40 million in its dimension lumber mill in Camden, South Carolina Canfor Southern Pine, a leading integrated forest products company, will upgrade its existing Camden, South Carolina sawmill in Kershaw County. The company is projected to invest $40 million in the project, as South Carolina Dept. of Commerce reports.

The company’s Camden facility has been in operation since 1983 and manufactures dimension lumber. To accommodate its continued growth, Canfor will be

installing a new planer mill, as well as new equipment throughout the sawmilling operation to address critical areas that limit production capacity. The expansion will begin this year and is expected to be completed in the 4Q 2019.

Canfor Southern Pine Vice President of U.S. Operations (East) Keith McGregor said: “The Camden facility has always been one of our top-performing mills. This $40 million capital investment will

increase capacity by 50%, making it our highest-producing facility in the Southern U.S. The project will also further enhance our first quartile performance in safety and quality. CatchMark 1Q revenues increased by 4% to $24.1 m In line with expectations, CatchMark Timber Trust, Inc. reported higher revenue, an increase in GAAP net loss, and an increase in Adjusted EBITDA for the quarter ended March 31, 2018 compared to the three-month period ended March 31, 2017.

Heinola to supply green sorting & stick-stacking line for Iisveden Metsä Oy The new line will be installed next to the current sorting line, at which point the current line will begin serving as a dry sorting line.

The capacity of the new line is approximately 150,000 m3 of green lumber a year.

The sorting line will include features such as automated camera-based sorting equipment, equipment to allow for stepless cutting functions, a sorting conveyor of push-chain type will be

installed to sort the materials into 20 vertical bins. The stick-stacking line is equipped with an additional hoist and an automated stick distribution system containing 12 stick cassettes, as well as a stick storage system located between the dry sorting line and the stickstacking line.

HEINOLA’s own products will be complemented in the line by several devices from the product range of its sister company,

Hekotek. The electrification and automation of the line, as well the dust removal system and the chip conveyor from chipper to chip silo are just some of the solutions made possible with Hekotek products.

Engineering of the line is already under way, the installations will take place this autumn and early winter. Production on the line will begin in early 2019.

Wood pellet exports from the U.S. up 10.7% in Jan-Apr Wood pellet exports from the U.S. reached 1.74 million tonnes through April, up 10.7% from the first four months of 2017, according to USDA data. The average export price gained 5.2% to $140 per tonne.

The pellet exports to UK increased 7.8% to 1.30 million tonnes, and average price up 5.5% to $144 per tonne. The exports to Denmark jumped by 85.0% to 235.66 thousand tonnes, average price dropped 6.3% to $152 per

tonne.

The pellet exports from the U.S. to Belgium have fallen by 45.8% to 126.09 thousand tonnes with average price slipped 4.6% to $87 per tonne.

Pope Resources reported 1Q net income of $5.7 million Pope Resources reported net income of $5.7 million, or $1.31 per ownership unit, on consolidated revenue of $25 million, and lookthrough revenue of $17.6 million, for 1Q 2018. This compares to net income of $3.4 million, or $0.77 per ownership unit, on consolidated revenue of $17.3 million, and lookthrough revenue of $11.4 million, for 1Q 2017.

“The confluence of strong log markets and favorable winter

weather in 2018’s first quarter enabled us to push up harvest volumes and realize significant increases in cash flow from operations compared to last year’s first quarter,” said Tom Ringo, President and CEO. “Log prices generally were strongest in early Q1-18.

As the favorable markets and weather encouraged broad log production participation, however, realized prices slipped back 5

to 10% later in the quarter, still coming in at levels higher than recent quarters. Other items of note for this quarter include the previously announced January acquisitions by Fund IV of two timberland properties totaling nearly 37,000 acres.

BSW announces €40m investment plans BSW Timber, the UK’s leading integrated forestry and timber company, has announced its latest investment of €40m in Slovenia, constructing a new sawmill, CHP plant and pellet manufacturing facility which will see the creation of 170 new jobs.

Representatives from BSW, including CEO Tony Hackney, were in Slovenia , Tuesday 22nd May to sign a Memorandum of Understanding for their ambitious

development plans, together with their partners Government of The Republic of Slovenia, The Slovenian Forest Agency and other stakeholders to launch the investment.

The investment will see the construction on three sites, including a modern sawmill in Gomilsko with state-of-the-art wood processing technology, the development of pellet production

and wood biomass cogeneration at the Šoštanj site, and a final site in Letuš will focus on the production of value added products.

Tony Hackney, Chief Executive at BSW Timber, said: “After seeing the success of our Latvian sawmill we were keen to explore new opportunities within The EU. “Slovenia has some of the best forests in The EU and a largely undeveloped processing sector. We are delighted to be working alongside the Slovenian government to increase the competitiveness of the country’s timber supply chain, in line with their ‘Wood is Beautiful’ strategy.

“With the developing wood shortages in UK, Slovenia is a very attractive country for us to invest in. The Slovenian Government has agreed a 15-year long term contract for 120,000 cubic metres of roundwood which will be backed up by supply from a very supportive private sector while working with domestic sawmills.”

The location of the new mill was decided following an extensive study completed by BSW and Tilhill Forestry, part of the BSW

Group, and the Slovenian Forestry Institute.

Alexander Brownlie, BSW’s Commercial Director and Chairman of BSW SI, continued: “The site in Gomilsko is the ideal location for our new sawmill, providing us with access to high quality raw material, a good history of timber processing as well as the added advantage of the site’s geographical location, very good road links and with the Port of Koper offering excellent export links.”

The new sawmill will have the capacity to process an annual input in excess of 300,000m3 sawlogs, making it the largest mill in Slovenia. Its products will be available for the Slovenian market, however BSW plans to build on its successful Latvian marketing model and predominantly export to international markets, such as UK, Southern Europe, North Africa, North America and Asia.

Co-products from the Gomilsko mill will be transferred to Šoštanj where the Company will invest in CHP capacity and pellet manufacturing.

experience, every direct job at BSW goes on to create an additional five across a range of relating industries, such as harvesting and logistics. This would mean that from our 170 new roles, up to 850 additional jobs could be created across Slovenia.

BSW is set to begin construction in September 2018, with the aim to start production in early 2020.

The Viiratsi sawline is a complete USNR line from the Cambio 800 debarker to the resaw and the Catech edger line.

The Viiratsi is also the first saw line produced in Sweden with USNR optimization. A great effort was put into adapting the USNR optimization software to the new machinery. This work was done through a tight cooperation between Swedish technicians and the USNR optimization team in Parksville, British Columbia.

“The decision was based on an economic estimate,” he said. “With bigger logs, the investment principle was to get a maximum monetary yield out of the raw material. Based on our raw material, optimum saw patterns plus the maximum possible curve sawing recovery is needed to achieve our goals.”

In 2016, they started discussions with USNR about a new saw line for large diameter logs to match their existing small log line. Availability of raw materials was a key factor.

Competition in the market for small logs had increased significantly in Estonia, making it hard to grow by volume. The sawing capacity in Estonia is also bigger than the availability of raw material. Therefore, it was necessary to extend the raw material base to keep the volume of sawn material.

Nordwood’s lumber is used in a wide variety of applications such as construction works, furniture, packaging and wood industry.

Hence, Viiratsi needed a flexible solution which could manage a broad variety of saw patterns. The solution to this equation spells out the SuperSaver merry-go-round line.

The merry-go-round sawline, together with an optimized edger line, is a common solution in many regions, and in Scandinavia it is closely associated with the

“In the near future, the production capacity of laminated timber products will grow even further, and therefore the use of lumber in post processing will likely increase. The installed sawing capacities will exceed the amount of raw material usage.

“Log prices are steadily rising and pushing manufacturers to invest in equipment that provides better financial return, especially

the hardware and software scanning systems. Companies that have not invested or are not going to do this in the near future, have already finished or stopped production.

“A steady growth of wages, 5% per year, and low interest rates will make all investments attractive that reduce the number of employees per unit of production.”

Catech Edgers Catech edgers have long been the top-of-the-line trademark for high speed softwood edging. Scanning and measurement technologies have evolved throughout the years, and now USNR’s BioLuma technology has been implemented.

The standard scanner heads in Catech systems are now BioLuma 2900L. The scanners feature laser scanning at a resolution of 0.3 in (8 mm) at a scan rate of 2500 Hz over the full length of the board. As an option, the system can be fitted with vision scanning for full value optimization.

Recently, the first two Catech systems with BioLuma technology have been installed, one in Fiskarheden Sawmill, Sweden, and one in Viiratsi.

Why Catech?

Margo Jaska, Technical Manager at AS Viiratsi Saeveski explains why they chose the Catech edger for their new sawline: “The edger was chosen mainly because of the capacity – with a peak capacity of up to 70 boards/minute, and an average speed of 55 boards/ minute.

utolog has unveiled its new log optimizer. The design of the manufacturer’s latest solution includes many new features that respond to the growing demands within the industry.

When the gap between logs is too small, the line must stop to position the cutting tools. When the gap is too long, throughput is reduced. Therefore, it is important to maintain a constant gab between the logs, which is easier said than done.

The system also eliminates virtually all log crossings. For example, a log that is too small to be detected by the other type of sensors may result in two logs crossing over one another in the chain, triggering a production stoppage in order to separate these two logs.

Innovative Solutions to a Challenging Environment Northern Alberta is a challenging environment for the forest industry, but Northland Forest Products in Fort McMurray takes it all in stride.

N

orthland Forest Products has seen its fair share of challenges over the years. The mill is located in Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada, which is in the heart of Canada’s oil sands, making it hard to attract employees when they have to compete against the high wages offered by the nearby oil sector.

And then there were the recent forest fires which destroyed valuable timberlands, forced an evacuation of the city of 80,000 people and shut the mill down for over a month (see sidebar on the fires).

But for the family owners of Northland – brothers Craig and Howie Ewashko and their sister Kim Norris, dealing with these challenges is all in a day’s work.

“We have learned over the years to be flexible and adapt to different and challenging situations,” explains Craig. “We keep pace with technology and market conditions and we continually position

ourselves to be successful in both types of markets – the good and the bad.”

In 2016, the team at Northland saw one of these opportunities to reposition the mill for future growth. “Following the acquisition of another mill in the region, we solidified our fibre supply in early 2016 and immediately went to the white board again to see how we could maximize our new investment,” says Craig. “It was clear that the volume of logs under 12 inches (30 cm) was going to increase so we turned to our longterm small log primary breakdown supplier, HewSaw, to see what could be done. They presented us with a turn-key solution for a new primary breakdown machine that would eliminate major mill flow changes and minimize the risk of integrating scanning, programming and mechanical installations from various suppliers.”

This new line replaced an older model R200 that was installed back in 1998 and then upgraded in 2003.

“There are three main features on the new HewSaw that were attractive to us,” explains Craig.

“First is the separate edging on the new machine. It is working very well for us and is allowing us to produce top and bottom jacket boards that are equal in quality to the HewSaw production coming from the ripsaw. Second is the increased horsepower and some heavier duty parts, which enable us to now operate at feed speeds of over 600 feet per minute (180 metres per minute). And lastly, HewSaw’s integrated supplier solution gave us confidence in our new system as HewSaw has partnered with experienced suppliers in areas such as scanning and optimization, machine controls, and the hydraulic system.”

The HewSaw R200 A.1 is the smallest and most economical model in HewSaw’s line-up of single pass and multi-unit sawing machines. It is an extremely flexible machine that can process logs from under 3 inches (7.5 cm) to almost 14 inches (35cm) in diameter and lengths from 8 feet (2.4 metres) to 20 feet (6 metres) plus, all in one pass. The HewSaw single pass process starts when the log is presented to the HewSaw Log-in system. In the Northland machine, scanning is provided by Canadian scanning and optimization supplier Prologic Plus.

The 3-D scanner is situated above the HewSaw V-flight conveyor that feeds the 2R log positioner.

After being positioned for the best pattern recovery, the log is then fed into the R200 which chips all four sides, rips the centre stack and then processes the sideboards by removing wane, which eliminates downstream edging on the HewSaw produced boards.

Northland has partnered with HewSaw for several decades dating back to the 1990s. “Our father, Roy, was a big influence on us,” says Craig. “Back in the early 90s, he first looked at different methods of processing smaller diameter logs. He had seen an earlier version of the HewSaw method and was confident that it was a

viable solution on our growing dependence on a smaller diameter log supply.”

The new HewSaw is the third model form the Finnish manufacturer to be installed at Northland Forest Products. “Over the years we have continued our partnership with HewSaw and they have responded with updated equipment that has increased feed speeds and recovery. I have to say, having a partnership and a long-term relationship with a main supplier like HewSaw is key to our success,” adds Craig.

With some excellent upfront planning and cooperation between HewSaw, the mill, and the subcontractors involved in the project, the start-up portion of the project was extremely efficient.

With some pre-work, such as wiring, hydraulic plumbing and foundation work completed well in advance of the mechanical installation of the HewSaw, the line was only shut down for 16 days for the project.

As of May 2018, Craig was happy to report that the new HewSaw is setting production records for the mill. “It is doing its job and we are excited to see how far we can go with this new machine,” he concludes.

When mother nature has other ideas Good planning is key to a successful project but sometimes there are circumstances you just can’t control as the crew at Northland Forest Products found out first hand.

W

hen a customer is preparing to purchase a new HewSaw line, it often takes months of discussions, planning, technical dialogue and on-site visits, but even after the ideal solution is determined and the contract is signed, the work is far from over. That’s where HewSaw’s After Sales team comes in, and with their vast experience they carefully plan every detail of the machine installation and commissioning, all with the goal of delivering a smooth and streamlined project start-up for the customer.

This was the case with long-term HewSaw customer Northland Forest Products in Fort McMurray, Alberta, in Canada’s Boreal Forest Region. The workflow spreadsheets were completed, their new HewSaw R200 A.1 machine and 2R log positioner were built and being prepared for shipment from the HewSaw factory in Mäntyharju, Finland, and the project planning meetings were finished with the HewSaw team and the sub-contractors knowing what had to be done for their parts of the project. But in May 2016, just before the HewSaw was scheduled to leave the factory, Mother Nature had another idea and decided she was going to throw a wrench into the well laid out plan!

“We were well on our way with the project when devastating forest fires that traumatized the city of Fort McMurray and the surrounding area forced us to re-evaluate our short-term strategy,” explains Craig Ewashko, who is one of Northland’s family owners and looks after mill operations. “We were shut down for a month but we were able to work closely with HewSaw to re-schedule the delivery and the project.”

The impact of the forest fire was far reaching. The city of Fort McMurray, which typically houses about 80,000 people, was under a mandatory evacuation and was deserted in just a matter of hours.

2,400 buildings were destroyed, including the homes of several Northland employees, and it is estimated that 575,000 hectares

(1,421,000 acres) of timberlands were lost.

As news footage of the evacuation showed a steady stream of vehicles and people heading south on the only main route out of Fort McMurray, Craig, his brother and Northland Forest Products’ president, Howie Ewashko, set up camp at the mill site, which is located 18 kilometres north of the city and on the banks of the Athabasca River. With the help of a few dedicated employees and contractors, their main goal was to defend the mill against the fire, which the media had nicknamed “The Beast.”

Working with the government, contractors cleared trees that surrounded the mill. Northland’s crew placed sprinklers on the roof of the planer mill and surrounded the main office building with sprinklers. They also strategically positioned water cannons on the roof of the sawmill and in the log yard.

Although fires were burning all around the mill, the team at Northland held their ground, while staying in contact with provincial forest service district manager Bernie Schmitte, who had accurate and up-to-date wildfire information.

“We had a good information flow and we were ready to leave if necessary,” Howie says. “We were waiting for that call from Bernie, but until then we were going to stay.”

As it turned out, the crew at the Northland site stayed throughout the entire time Fort McMurray was evacuated. Their numbers went up on several occasions as a number of firefighters took refuge at the mill site for rest and refueling.

A couple of weeks after the crew set up their defenses at the mill, a contractor installed a temporary sprinkler and hydrant system fed by the Athabasca River.

“That gave us a lot of confidence,” says Howie. At that point with our cannons and sprinklers and the added sprinklers, we were putting roughly 15,000 gallons of water per minute into the air. If the fire was close we would start up the water

systems and leave them to run to prevent ember transfer fires.”

About a month after the evacuation of Fort McMurray, officials finally declared it safe to return to the area. Holding their ground had worked for Northland and although there were a few days where the sawmill complex seemed to be in imminent danger, the fire never broached the mill site boundaries. But with Fort McMurray open for business again came other challenges for Craig, Howie and the staff at Northland.

“People lost their homes, businesses were destroyed and there was a huge lack of places to stay for anyone displaced by the fire and for contractors coming into Fort McMurray to do restorative work,” explains Craig.

“At that point, we consulted with HewSaw’s staff and decided it was in everyone’s best interest to delay

the project.”

It took close to a year for things to return to normal in Fort McMurray and at the mill. But once the HewSaw install started, everything went to plan and crews put the first log through the new HewSaw on September 3, 2017 – 10 months after the original planned commissioning.

“As a family business, the word ‘quit’ is not in our vocabulary,” explains Craig. “We committed to HewSaw and HewSaw committed to us. It took a great team effort from everyone involved, but despite the challenges of dealing with the forest fires, we worked together to get the job done and today, we are setting records with the new machine.”

Northland’s owners and volunteer crews set up a water system that helped protect the mill site from wild fires that destroyed 575,000 hectares (1,421,000 acres) of timberlands in the region. With some good planning and hard work, the fire never reached the mill, although it did come close on several occasions.

The company’s dry kiln solutions are based on decades of experience in the highly demanding lumber drying market of the sawmill industry worldwide.

This experience and expertise ensures that customers are able to receive individual dry kiln solutions tailored to the needs of each sawmill.

Hildebrand manufactures a complete line of dry kilns: conventional kilns (forklift and track loaded for softwood and hardwood); continuous kilns, steamers; heat-treating; pre-

dryers; vacuum dryers; and various types of kiln controls with on-line service.

“Each year, we invest a significant percentage of our turnover in research and development, in cooperation with the University of Hanover to improve and develop drying technologies that will assist mills who are on the look-out for new ideas and opportunities for a better bottom line,” Andreas Mueller, Global Sales Lead, said.

This also applies to one of Hildebrand’s most recent developments, the Alternating Climate, which Mueller describes as a “great way of saving large amounts of energy in the kiln drying process”.

“It´s structure is entirely made of aluminium which is considered the material with the best combination of stability, longevity and cost-efficiency – stainless steel is also available,” Mueller said.

“While designing our HCK-A, we put great emphasis on creating exactly the right drying conditions – temperature, climate, air speed – for the respective lumber moisture content,” he said. “Lumber is placed length-wise on carts and rails and dried during transport through a number of zones with separate climates.

“Ultimately, lumber will be dried in our continuous kiln HCK-A just as it would be in a conventional kiln. The technical features of each individual drying zone are perfectly customized to the drying state and moisture of the lumber packages passing through.”

allows large savings of thermal energy by connecting the individual drying zones to one big thermal compound where excess heat from certain drying zones is guided to drying zones in need of additional heat. This way, thermal waste is greatly reduced.

Another energy-saving HCK feature is the Hildebrand HTT turbo-baffle system, which is based on height-adjustable aluminium baffles. These baffles are constantly repositioned vertically as computed by the Control System, thus shutting off the air flow from parts of the lumber stack for a predetermined time span.

While drying in the screened section continues through vapour pressure differential between the core and the surface of the lumber boards, air velocity in the exposed sections is almost doubled. This allows shorter drying times with less consumption of electrical energy while still achieving the highest-possible lumber quality.

SANDERS LOGGING BTB catches up with twenty-six-year-old Harry Sanders III to see how things are going with his new Tigercat processor.

ast summer Sanders Logging purchased the first Tigercat H250D processor - 575 harvesting head package to be sold in Georgia. As a third-generation logger, Harry Sanders has been with the family business for a little over three years. He has a forestry degree from the University of Georgia and has been working in the woods since he was just thirteenyears- old. Harry loves what he does and is very passionate about the industry. He is part of the Young Alumni Committee for the Warnell School of Forestry at the University of Georgia, is on the Board of Directors for the Bleckley County Chamber of Commerce and is on the Emerging Leaders Committee for the Georgia Forestry Association.

What initiated interest in purchasing a processor for your operation?

The first Tigercat H250D processor with a 575 processing head in the state of Georgia.

We ended up buying the processor because of the mill that we

haul to. We haul to Interfor, a Canadian-based company that is expanding in Georgia. They have seven mills in Georgia and they’re integrating their systems from what they have in British Columbia to what we have down here. And to be productive and efficient, the processor was the best way to go.

We thought that we could maximize the process, so that’s when we started looking into it. From the get-go I knew I wanted a Tigercat carrier. I just didn’t know what kind of processor head.

Did you know of anyone else in the area with a Tigercat processing head?

There’s not many Tigercat processing heads in the southeastern US. I think there are two in Arkansas, and I got those guys’ phone numbers and I started calling them to get feedback on their experience.

Sanders Logging has been buying Tigercat loaders and drive-to-tree feller bunchers since the early 2000s, trading for new equipment every three to four years. Currently the company has three Tigercat 234 series loaders, a 630E skidder and two driveto- tree feller bunchers, a 720G and 724G.

So you were set on the Tigercat carrier. How did you decide on the full package with the Tigercat processing head?

At the Tidewater Demo last year, I was hanging around some of the [Tigercat] engineers discussing various processing heads that are used in the southern US. Later during dinner, one of the engineers I was talking with brought over Mr. Ken to discuss the idea of building a Tigercat processing head for the south. The next day, Tidewater and Tigercat had a management meeting where the idea was brought up and discussed in further detail. Tidewater called later that day and said, “We’re going to build one and we’re going to bring it to the south.” I was happy to be given the opportunity to be the first one to demo it. In my head, I knew I was going to buy it. The following Monday, I received a formal package detailing

the machine specifications. I just couldn’t wait for it to come.

So when was the machine delivered?

The machine was delivered in August. After the phone call a couple of months passed and it was the Tigercat 25th anniversary ceremony. Tidewater invited me to attend and I actually got to see the head and the carrier being built. That was the day that I said to myself that I was a Tigercat man. I saw how you guys run your operation and I was really impressed. I really believe in the

core Tigercat values. I like what Tigercat stands by. It is similar to what my father laid upon me growing up and it is how we run our business. I can just see the passion and I really felt it when I came and visited. I was blown away by everybody. It seemed like everybody really enjoyed their job, from the guys and girls painting, to the people designing the machines.

It was a real homey feeling and I’m a small-town guy so it just felt right. Another 60 days rolled by and the machine was delivered to me in Georgia.

I was kind of nervous about it. I had never run a processor. And I didn’t really have any time to learn. It made me really nervous. But what made me feel better was the fact that I had several Tigercat guys stay with me for about three weeks to get me started.

Tigercat had four representatives come for start-up: Devin Snively, service representative based out of Ailey, Georgia; Gary MacDonald, product support representative based out of Nova Scotia; Blaine MacDonald, product support specializing in harvesting and processing heads based out of Alberta; and Pierre Fortin, service representative based out of Brantford, Ontario. Collectively, the team helped Harry understand the head, trained him on operating the head, provided technical support and optimized the programming to suit the application.

The Tigercat 630E skidder was purchased at the same time as the H250D processor. The processor has accumulated approximately 1,700 hours and the skidder has 1,800 hours.

I had a lot of support behind it and that was comforting. I was very sure that the product was going to be good. I just had to make it work when it got out here. I’m a competitive person so I took on that challenge and I was ready to do whatever it took.

Around Thanksgiving, Interfor sent me to BC to tour some of their logging operations. They wanted us

to collaborate and share ideas as they had been running processors for many years. The objective was to discuss how to effectively integrate the processor into our system. The trip was several weeks after I had already started running the machine, but I still learned a lot and what to look out for.

How has your productivity changed since you got this machine?

I am using my processor in 25 to 30-year-old plantation pine with twelve to twenty inch average sized butts. I have put about 1,700 hours on it so far and it has definitely upped my production.

Have other loggers in the area been curious about the machine?

There has been a lot of interest with it. It seemed like when I first got the machine, I had a fan base out here every day. It was really nerve wracking to me because I was learning to run it and had all these eyes watching me.

What would you like to tell other young people that may be considering logging as a career path?

delimbers are very productive. But when the mill requires you to cut certain lengths and you only have a six-inch window of error, you can’t be efficient and productive doing it the old-school way with a loader and delimber. You can to a certain extent, but I am way more precise and efficient with the processor.

You can make a good living doing what we do. If you love being outdoors every day, it is a great job.

It’s different scenery all the time because we’re constantly moving tracts. You have the opportunity to meet a lot of people over the years and build really good relationships with them.

apacity and manoeuvrability have long dominated reviews of forwarder technology, as suppliers worked to outdo each other on, first, their ability to simply carry more wood and, second, the ease with which smaller models can move between stems during thinnings.

This year, however, looks slightly different. Yes, there is affirmation of the manufactures previous work to bring units up to current standards in the aforementioned

strengths but, importantly, there is a greater focus on the precision and workability of the cranes that do the loading. This focus plays into the other secondary consideration of operator comfort and general operability, as the loading process plays a key role in driver visibility.

This is far from an overriding theme but it is a hint toward a new frontier in the battle to produce the best forwarder on the market.

John Deere designed its line of G-Series forwarders, including the 1110G, 1210G, 1510G and 1910G models, to meet the daily demands of a logging operation.

Each machine features a powerful Final Tier 4 diesel engine and cabs designed to maximize operator comfort. Additionally, the G-Series machines are available with

Intelligent Boom Control (IBC), helping operators be more precise and productive on the job.

One of the most notable features on the G-Series machines, IBC simplifies boom operation.

IBC automatically controls the lift, slew and the extension of the boom based on the location of grapple, increasing accuracy, productivity, and, ultimately, the number of loads per each work shift. With IBC, the operator no longer needs to control each independent boom joint movement separately, instead controlling the boom tip directly.

The cabs on the John Deere forwarders were designed to maximize operator comfort, even during long days in challenging conditions. Loggers can choose from three cab options: fixed, rotating, or rotating and levelling.

The rotating and levelling cabin helps the operator maintain the correct working posture to prevent

stress on the back and shoulder areas, even on uneven terrain, and reduces vibration by as much as 30-50% during operation.

With a cab rotation of 290°, the G-Series machines provide a view of the boom and grapple for safer, easier log loading. The large windows allow virtually unrestricted all-around visibility.

Comfortable ergonomic armrests, a fully adjustable air-cushioned seat and automated climate-control system help to reduce operator fatigue and increase productivity throughout the day.

All G-Series models feature the TimberMatic control system.

The improved system includes a configurable user interface, cruise control and inclination display, increasing operation efficiency.

MECA control modules, simple CAN busses and a streamlined electrical system improve the efficiency of machine functions.

Mid-size 1110G, 1210G and 1510G models The mid-size forwarders, including the 1110G, 1210G and 1510G models, are equipped with features that boost machine power and operator precision. The mid-size models feature adaptive driveline control, a first in the forestry industry, which improves drivability and productivity.

Using this software-based control system, the operator can select the desired RPM setting (Eco, Normal, Power) for the operating conditions, and the system automatically adjusts the engine’s RPMs to correspond with the engine load. In highload situations, driveline control ensures that the diesel engine runs smoothly and uses the available maximum tractive force efficiently.

Boasting 6.6% more power and 4.1% more torque than the previous model, the 1110G is stable and agile, making it ideal

for thinning jobs. The machine is available with a short wheelbase, and the rear axle on the 1110G has been moved forward, ensuring that the load space is unchanged.

The 1210G features 7.6% more power and 7.8% more torque than its predecessor. Available with optional Variable Load Space (VLS), the load space can be easily configured based on operator need. With VLS, the width of the load space is adjustable, allowing for more flexible forwarding and sorting.

The power and torque on the 1510G machine has been increased by 5.1% and 8.7%, respectively, boosting machine productivity.

With an increased slewing angle (44°), the 1510G is more agile than the previous model.

Both the 1210G and 1510G models are available in a long bogie version. The distance between the front and rear wheel hubs in rear bogie has been

increased, and the power train and turning radius on the 1210G and 1510G models are the same as with the standard HD portal bogieequipped machine. The long-bogie versions deliver more ground pressure for logging in soft terrain, as well as better stability when navigating over obstacles in rocky conditions.

Large 1910G model The 1910G is the largest forwarder model in the line-up and offers maximum power and performance.

The 1910G features 7.5% more engine output and 21% more torque that its predecessor.

Additionally, increase drive hydraulics and 4.5% more tractive force makes this machine ideal for tough conditions.

The 1910G also offers a larger load capacity. The cross-sectional area of the wide load space is bigger and the new-generation headboard provides excellent

visibility to the load space.

Additionally, the productive CF8 boom moves smoothly and seamlessly, increasing accuracy and efficiency.

John Deere telematics Customers can get more out of their forwarders by taking advantage of the John Deere ForestSight suite of technology solutions, including JDLink, now available five years in base. JDLink enables fleet owners to monitor their machines from miles away, monitoring machine health, tracking hours and identifying any maintenance needs.

In partnership with a local John Deere dealer, JDLink allows the dealer service department to easily diagnose machine issues without traveling onsite, reducing maintenance costs and downtime.

the factory in Rottne has resulted in lifting torque of 105 kNm for the RK 105. This is compared to approximately 87 kNm on the earlier model. The lifting angle has also been increased by about 5°.

“We worked hard to reduce the stresses in the welds and have improved the lifting force with a full 20%,” Filip Wirbladh, Designer at Rottne Industri, said.

“We can now offer both these forwarders with a stronger and improved crane, which not only

increases the lifting capacity but also the performance of the entire machine.”

F20D – now with 27 t tractive force The Rottne F20D is a robust forwarder with a very large load capacity of a full 20 t, making it perfect for long forwarding distances.

The F20D features an automatic transmission, which, along with the load capacity, means that it can manoeuvre even better than before in all types of terrain and can maintain a high driving speed even with maximum load.

Tigercat grapples Since an average of 50% of the forwarder duty cycle is spent loading and unloading, increasing the number of logs per crane cycle is another way that Tigercat is improving overall machine productivity and reducing forwarding cost per tonne. The FG43 and FG53 series Tigercat grapples compliment the crane with larger load area capacities at 43 cm2 (4.6 ft2) and 53 cm2 (5.7 ft2) respectively.

Komatsu Forest has a wide range of forwarders, from the smallest, which is optimal for thinning, to the powerful forwarders for final felling.

The Komatsu 835, the smallest model, is ideal for thinning with its manoeuvrability and power. It has low weight and a high ground clearance that contributes to reduce the environmental impact.

The 845 works well for thinning but also for lighter final felling.

Starting early June, TimberPro began releasing its newly refreshed line-up of rubber-tired forwarders.

The new D-series is powered by the Cummins High Performance L9 Stage V engine. This new engine comes standard with 338 hp and an optional 350 hp is also offered.

TimberPro chose the stage V engine over Tier 4 because of its simplified aftertreatment system, which uses a single canister SCR. The new L9 engine is also more fuel efficient than its predecessor, while reducing maintenance cost with 1,000-hour oil change intervals.

W

ith 25 pieces of equipment and 80 employees, Fennell Forestry is one of the largest logging contractors in South Australia. Siblings, Wendy and Barry Fennell purchased Fennell Forestry from their parents five years ago. As CEO, Wendy Fennell manages the day-to-day operations and brother Barry works on new business development.

Like many young people, Wendy didn’t know what she wanted to do for a career when she was deciding on a university program. “I like money so I went into accounting and thought I would see where

that went,” she says. At the age of seventeen, just before going to university, she worked alongside her father, travelling to job sites and helping him in the workshop.

The following year Wendy went to the University of South Australia to study accounting but arranged her days so she only had lectures on Monday and Wednesday, allowing her to drive back home to work in the family business.

While attending university, Wendy got her B-Double truck licence. “We only had two trucks then and Dad and I would do night shift. We had drivers on during the day, and for some extra capacity, we’d jump in at night,” explains Wendy.

Wendy wanted to be more involved in the family forestry business so she changed some of her courses to focus on occupational health and safety.

“The company was relatively new at this time so I helped formulate all the safety material. It was really good to have a real live business to work with. I was able to put my knowledge to good use.”

Wendy had one more year of university left when the family business won its biggest contract.

“I was two years into my three-year degree and I decided to do the last year by correspondence and come back to work. And I’ve been here ever since,” she states.

As CEO, Wendy has a lot of daily responsibilities and is pulled in many different directions throughout the day. However, she highly values her visits to the operations to engage with her employees. “I see the staff as they come through the depot but I like getting on site as much as possible to catch up and have an overall look at what’s happening.”

Fennell Forestry purchased the company’s first 1085C forwarder in February 2017.

Prioritizing what needs to get done each day is critical to her role and she spends a lot of the time giving direction to the leadership team. “My main goal is making sure our machines are always running. So planning preventative maintenance, addressing safety aspects and making sure we are working through the required logistics,” Wendy expresses. “I really love learning about the equipment and how we can get

the best out of it. There is always something on the go and it’s always evolving.”

Wendy has been in the business for 25 years and people are still surprised when they find out what she does for a living. “I guess they don’t really understand exactly what I do and they are typically shocked at how much knowledge I have of the machinery.” She knows some female skidder operators and truck drivers in the area but

does not know of any other female forestry business owners.

When asked why she thinks there are so few females working in the industry she explains, “It is the image of the forestry industry over here that deters women.

It really needs to be uplifted to showcase the careers possible. In Canada, most people understand what forestry is all about. Here in Australia there are still people that live in this area that have no idea

People still believe that you get a job in forestry if you couldn’t get a job anywhere else. People think it is second-class, but it isn’t. Fennell Forestry has an impressive depot with a professional office, spacious workshop, an area dedicated to chain sharpening, an onsite training room and parts warehouse.

Blue Lake is located in a dormant volcanic crater in the heart of beautiful Mount Gambier. The lake is a vibrant cobalt blue in Australia’s summer months of December to March and turns a steel grey from April to November. The cause of this colour phenomenon is not fully understood, however is generally considered to be due to the warming of the lake’s surface layers causing calcium carbonate to precipitate out of solution, resulting in a scatter of blue wavelengths of sunlight.

Managing a growing business

THE GREEN TRIANGLE Fennell Forestry’s success story is built upon South Australia’s thriving Green Triangle timber industry.

Reflecting its name, the Green Triangle is one of Australia’s major forest regions, covering an area of 6 million hectares (15 million acres). It has extensive plantation softwood and hardwood resources. The Green Triangle spans between the states of South Australia and Victoria with ready access to the capital cities of Melbourne and Adelaide. Processing activities are centred around the cities of Mount Gambier in South Australia and Portland in Victoria, which also provides the region’s port.

Fennell Forestry Fennell Forestry is a major plantation timber harvest and transport company, with an industry history spanning 27 years. The company runs a blue gum chipping operation, a pine harvesting operation and a transport business, operating 24-hours per day from Monday to Friday with three crews on pine and one crew on the chipping side. The pine side of the business produces 11 500 tonnes of wood each week and the chipping side produces approximately 4,500 tonnes. “We harvest about 560,000 tonnes of pine and 200,000 tonnes of chips annually,” Wendy states.

The company ran excavator conversions for many years. As equipment developed and the business grew, they looked into purchasing purpose-built and decided on a Tigercat H855C harvester. “Once we went to purpose-built, we never went back,” Wendy states. “We have over 25,000 hours on that first harvester and it has held up great.”

There are definite challenges to managing a growing company.

Wendy and Barry are always looking for new innovative ways to operate and grow but without sacrificing or losing what made the company successful in the first place. That is why they decided to enroll in the Business Growth Program offered by the state of South Australia. Wendy wanted

to establish how to effectively grow while holding true to the company’s core values.

Dr. Jana Matthews, who has worked with a lot of large companies in the US, was brought over by the state of South Australia to run the Business Growth Program. Fennell Forestry was the only forestry company in the program. Companies from a wide variety of industries participated –

Wendy purchased the company’s first 1085C forwarder last February. “We are not in steep ground so there was a debate between Barry and I if we should purchase the 1085C. We weren’t quite sure if it was the right fit for our job but it is proving to be doing very well.”

The program had multiple growth experts in to discuss common pitfalls, the different stages of growth and how to effectively advance a business when you’re rapidly growing. “It was really good to understand.

We have good foundations in our business and it helped us ensure we keep those as we expand,” Wendy elaborates. “Dr. Matthews would tell us things that needed to be done and I’d think to myself

that our business didn’t need it but in the end she was right.” Fennell Forestry continues to ensure it has the proper infrastructure and personnel to support the growth. The company has its own workshop, an operations manager helping support both the logging and transport side of the business, a full time operator trainer and a training room for classroom sessions, as well as a large parts

Work-life balance On top of all Wendy’s work responsibilities, she is a single mother of two with eightyear- old, Flynn and six-yearold, Hudson.

Wendy and Barry make a great team. “You can’t beat being in business with family because you know those core values are the same.” Wendy acknowledges that she and Barry are very different.

“I am more structured and he’s got the random thoughts and entrepreneurialism. I like to get in and do things with structure and see things out. Whereas Barry is always moving forward, looking for the next improvement.” The balance in personalities definitely contributes to the company’s

Wendy enjoys family ski vacations, recently visiting Whistler, British Columbia and New Zealand. “Flynn wanted to try snowboarding, but you couldn’t snowboard until you were eight, so I had to go back when he was eight, and that’s where we went last year. The boys have been hooked on the Winter Olympics, telling me all about it when I get home from work,” she says.

FITNESS FEBRUARY Wendy’s health craze kicked in when she was in her early twenties and at the age of 43 she still lives a very healthy lifestyle. For the month of February, she implemented a program called ‘Fitness February’ to educate her crewmembers on how to keep fit and reduce fatigue on the job.

Fresh fruit and healthy snack alternatives were available in the lunchroom throughout the month along with training sessions at a local gym. “I actually had one of my employees send me a picture last night of all the fruits and vegetables he had cut up for the week. He was proud of his meal prep and I love seeing that,” says Wendy.

“A healthy workforce is a productive one and all employees are being encouraged to live a healthier, more active lifestyle.”

Wendy has managed to help build a booming business, excel as CEO and have a beautiful family – proving you can do it all. “I love my kids and my work. I have a great team around me and I appreciate them all. It’s never a dull moment, that’s for sure.”

A new tyre design from one of the world’s leading tyre manufacturers is set to be a “game changer” for forestry entrepreneurs

inland-headquartered tyre expert Nokian Tyres has released a new tyre design into the market that may transform the efficiency of operations for forestry professionals.

“We’ve been in this business for decades and have been producing tractor tyres for forestry – these machines are getting bigger, more powerful and also becoming more versatile,” Marko Muhonen, Nokian Tyres Business Line Director Forestry, told International Forest Industries.

“Our discussions with customers shows there was a shifting demand here and we sought to provide a tyre for modern forestry applications as well as some agricultural applications.

“We focused on a couple of things: grip and durability for rocky conditions; and heavy loads. The main challenge to overcome was punctures but we wanted to also improve the wear rates and the capacity to carry units that include cranes or are simply bigger. And they have to be able to cope with this at much higher speeds than previously – 50 km/h is quite normal in some countries on certain sites. Speed combined with load is a problem.”

We filmed this cutter working on a second thinning job where the stems are 6 inches or so average, many less.

This feller buncher is very impressive. The owner has been pleased with fuel consumption and the speed and power of this feller buncher is more than adequate in his thinning and logging operations. The operators are also making positive comments about the cab interior which has recently been much improved. The old steering column is gone and it opens everything up in terms of visibility and space for your legs. If you have not sat in one of these you should do yourself a favour and hop into one.

The new Peterson 4300B drum chipper has been updated for 2014 with new features that high-volume biomass chippers demand. The 4300B can be equipped with either a 6-pocket (to make standard biomass chips) or 12-pocket (to make microchips) drum depending on your material needs.

A Peterson 5710C horizontal grinder feeds ground wood pallets into a Terra-Select S6-E star screen. The three fraction Terra Select S6-E sorts the ground material into fines, accepts and overs.

Both machines are ideal for processing mulch, compost, or other organic material.

This Peterson 6700B horizontal grinder is equipped with our new Mid-Speed C&D package, and is doing primary grind in surplus railroad ties. The second grinder (a Peterson 4710B) is processing the material to meet the product spec which is being used for energy production.

This Peterson 5710C horizontal grinder is grinding pallets for mulch production in Indiana. The machine uses a cross belt magnet to pull the nails from the material (watch for a follow-up video on this process soon!)

The Mid-Speed C&D package is designed for highly contaminated material and features several new innovations that have not been seen on high-speed horizontal grinders before. This operation is seeing consistent 300+ tons per hour of production in this material.

The 5710C is Peterson’s latest generation of high production track grinders. Powered by the Caterpillar C27 or C32 engine at 1050 horsepower, this grinder provides the highest power to weight ratio of any Peterson grinder. At approximately 83,000 pounds (37650 kg) the 5710C was designed for operations requiring high production and frequent moves between jobs.

An all-Tigercat pine harvesting system owned by B.R. & K.F. Muskett & Sons. The three-machine system working in the southern part of Tasmania consists of a Tigercat L830C feller buncher, a Tigercat LH855C harvester processing infield and a 1075B forwarder equipped with a Tigercat crane and grapple.

A Tigercat 1135 wheel harvester felling and processing in a tough blowdown clear fell salvage application in Scotland. Although the 1135 wheeled harvester was designed for specialty thinning, the machine is highly capable in a variety of selective felling and clear fell applications.

Doppstadt Expo 2015 - a Bird’s-eye View

50 years of Doppstadt: More than 5,000 guests from the environmental and recycling sector experienced two unforgettable days: on 24 and 25 June 2015.

Environmental technology company Doppstadt staged what was arguably the largest European trade show of 2015 in this field on its 220,000 sq.-metre works site (Saxony-Anhalt). On show were over one hundred machines for the shredding, sorting and treatment of waste and biomass. What was unique thereby

was that more than half of the machines could be seen in action. In two-hour live demonstrations, the guests saw how coarse shredders, screening machines and exact hackers shredded tree trunks into sawdust, separated waste from recyclables and sorted pebbles from sand heaps. In doing so, Doppstadt demonstrated its problem-solving skills through combined processes: material collected by machines was initially shredded, then separated into its various components by means of separation processes such as screening, washing or air separation.

This new 6-deck jet veneer dryer, located at Martco, Chopin, LA, is the largest dryer to date in the southern yellow pine region. This dryer will accomplish the equivalent production of two dryers, reducing labor costs by one-half. At the same time it will reduce thermal energy consumption by 10%, and exhaust fugitive emissions by 15%.

This mill is located in Ireland.

The dryer was erected off-line, and once complete it was towed into place and connected to all services under a projected expedited schedule. This allowed Martco the advantage of choosing the optimum time to disrupt its production schedule to install the additional capacity, and allowed the plant to utilize the existing building structure to house the new dryer.
