Come back growth

A

s this edition of International Forest Industries was being put to bed, I read some unpleasant news on the wires: apparently, the world economy is not growing as fast as it needs to for the big brains in world economics to be happy.

The International Monetary Fund has downgraded its growth forecast for this year from 3.4% to 3.2%. Next year, the predicted growth rate has come down from 3.6% to 3.5%.

Political isolationism and growing economic inequality were the stimulants for the more pessimistic outlook, with the fallout from the Chinese slowdown expected to worsen and emerging economies continuing to battle with the low oil price.

The threat of isolation was worst in Europe where Greece’s position in the European Union was far from assured and Britain was readying itself for a ‘stay or go’ referendum on its EU status mid-year.

The IMF in concert with the World Bank has pleaded for a more coordinated global effort to establish and maintain growth.

“In brief, lower growth means less room for error,” IMF chief economist Maurice Obstfeld said.

Having been openly relieved and even joyful at the modest growth levels we were seeing a few years back, our faltering world economy is a real mood killer. It genuinely feels like an ongoing theme of reducing expectations almost since the recovery set in – and more recently it has been.

April’s downgrade to growth forecasts was the fourth such downgrade in 12 months.

Dare we hope it is the last?

While slow growth isn’t good for any industry, the latest warning on GDP growth is particularly troubling for the forestry sector.

This is for two main reasons.

The first reason is the same as that which I regularly cite when speaking optimistically about forestry – it is the most primary of primary industries, up there with mining and

agriculture (it is a form of agriculture, really).

This status provides a form of insulation and security in the fact that, no matter what, people need to build shelter and wood is the basic foundation of building homes.

The upshot of that is forestry is completely exposed to slow GDP growth. We have nowhere to hide. While some industries right now may be ticking along quite nicely – I understand there is another tech boom in progress and the well documented chasm growing between rich and poor must mean luxury goods dealers are making fortunes – forestry rises and falls with the fate of the world as a whole.

Secondly, the countries most effected are key jurisdictions for the forestry sector.

Two of the countries posing the greatest threat to global growth are Brazil and Russia; the former because of the collapse in the oil price and the latter, partly because of oil but also because of sanctions imposed in response to the Ukraine crisis.

Brazil is something of a proxy for forestry in South America and represented the key growth market, while Russia, appropriately known as the ‘timber bank’, is a pivotal cog in the global forestry sector. The recovery we have seen in forestry must be limited as long as GDP in these two countries remain subdued.

The one positive was China, which was projected to outperform previous growth forecasts. That said, that prediction was based on yet more (artificial) stimulus. That will cool at some point.

I never would have thought I’d be wishing for the fragile growth of 2012 but it beats the uncertainty of 2016.

Tigercat releases Tier 4f equipped D-series harvesters New for 2016 are the H855D and LH855D harvesters equipped with the fuel-efficient Tigercat FPT N67 Tier 4f engine operating at 210 kW (282 hp) for North America and Europe Tigercat FPT engines offer improved reliability, lower long term maintenance costs and full support by Tigercat and the Tigercat dealer network.

Tigercat will continue to offer the H855C and LH855C for markets that do not require Tier 4 emissions compliance. The H855D series harvesters are available with two-piece or telescopic ER boom systems.

Tigercat’s patented ER boom technology allows the machine operator to extend and retract the boom on a horizontal plane smoothly and quickly using a single joystick. The stick boom or ‘reach’ joystick controls both the main and stick booms simultaneously, resulting in the attachment moving either away from or toward the operator.

Estonia’s wood pellet exports soar 87% in January y-o-y Estonian enterprises exported 15.8 million euros’ worth of wood pellets in January 2016, which is 87.2% more than during the same month a year earlier, while overall exports of wood products declined by 2.1%, data of Statistics Estonia show, cites LETA/BNS. Wood pellet sales grew in all major target markets, in the first place Sweden and the UK, with exports to those countries totalling

respectively 4.1 million and 2 million euros. Sales on the Danish market amounted to 7.7 million euros, the statistical office said.

The export of the biggest product group, sawn and planed timber, meanwhile fell 3.3% to 25.5 million euros. Exports of wooden furniture shrank 17.7% to 17.1 million euros and the export of building elements decreased 20.4% to 13.6 million euros. The biggest

The top export products were mouldings, strips and friezes, accounting for around 32% of the total. However, 2015 exports of these items were down almost 3% from a year earlier.

Sawnwood exports came in as the second ranked item in terms of value and accounted for 19% of exports. There was a 40% drop in exports of sawnwood to China in 2015 compared to 2014. Despite purchasing less sawnwood, China remained the main market for wood products from Peru in 2015.

Exports to the Dominican Republic were encouraging in 2015 as was the level of exports to Mexico which was the main market for sawnwood. The export of semi-manufactured wood in 2015 totalled $70.84 million FOB with China accounting for most at almost 70% of all exports of this category of product.

Exports of veneer and plywood in 2015 were worth $15.29 million FOB, down almost 9% on 2014. The main export markets were Mexico and the United States but imports by Mexico were down over 7%.

Exports of furniture and parts were valued at $6.72 million FOB in 2015, falling 14% compared to a year earlier. The US was the main market for Peru’s furniture and accounted for over 57% of all wooden furniture exports. The second main market was Italy which accounted for 15% of all furniture exports.

272.6% to 158 million euros.

Wood product imports totalled 39.2 million euros in January, down by 9.8% in annual comparison.

CatchMark Timber Trust reports 4Q revenues down 18% CatchMark Timber Trust’s 4Q 2015 revenues decreased to $17.1 million from $20.9 million for the 4Q 2014 primarily because of a decrease in timberland sales revenue of $7.5 million, offset by an increase in timber sales revenue of $3.5 million and an increase of $0.3 million in other revenues.

CatchMark incurred a net loss of $3.3 million for the quarter ended December 31, 2015 compared to net income of$2.2 million for the 4Q 2014, as a result of a $5.2

million decrease in operating income from lower net timberland sales, higher depletion expense, and an increase in interest expense.

For the 4Q 2015, Adjusted EBITDA was $6.9 million, a $4.6 million decrease from the 4Q 2014, primarily due to a $7.3 million decrease in revenue from net timberland sales and increases in cash paid for general and administrative expenses, other operating expenses, and forestry

management fees, offset by a $3.7 million increase in net timber sales.

FY 2015 revenues increased to $69.1 million from $54.3 million for 2014 primarily due to an increase in timber sales revenue of $12.2 million, an increase in timberland sales revenue of $1.2 million and an increase of $1.4 million in other revenues.

For the year ended December 31, 2015, Adjusted EBITDA was $32.2 million, a $8.5 million increase from the year ended

December 31, 2014.

MENA region remains a key destination for American softwoods The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) remains a key destination for American softwoods amidst the increasing demand within the region’s booming construction and housing market, according to American Softwoods (AMSO), the promotional partnership formed by three major U.S. softwood trade associations.

Confident of further growth in the region, AMSO participated at the Dubai WoodShow 2016, held at the Dubai International Convention and Exhbition Center from April 4 - 6, 2016. In line with its aims to increase awareness in the region, AMSO is also taking significant steps to underline the primary benefits of U.S. softwoods, which are available in a wide range of grades and sizes and come from some of the most sustainably managed forests in the world.

According to AMSO, total exports of U.S. softwood lumber to the MENA region reached a value of USD 20 million in 2015. Despite an overall decline in softwood exports to the region, primarily on account of the strength of the dollar, AMSO is optimistic that the situation

will improve, given that the UAE registered a whopping 1,127 percent increase in the value of American softwood lumber exports in January 2016 in comparison to the first month of 2015.

The UAE remains a key timber processing and re-export hub for the entire region and growth in this market is in line with an overall increase in the global trade of softwood lumber. According to Wood Resource Quarterly, softwood lumber trade increased during the first nine months of 2015 as compared to the same period in 2014 and was on track to reach its highest level since 2006.

“The MENA region’s need for high-quality wood products for its construction, furniture, and housing markets amongst others creates widespread opportunities for us to assist in the growth of U.S. softwood exports to the region,” said Charles Trevor, Consultant to American Softwoods.

“Amidst the increasing calls for sustainability, we remain committed to addressing the longterm demands of the region and will continue to play a key role in

providing stakeholders with key environmental data and technical information that can help them use American softwoods to their greatest potential.”

AMSO also paticipated at the ‘Talking Timber’ seminar and networking evening, which will be held in Dubai on April 5, 2016. Professor Chris Knowles, an Assistant Professor in Forest Products Marketing and the Assistant Director of the Oregon Wood Innovation Center (OWIC) at Oregon State University, highlighted the broad range of American softwood species that are available including Southern Yellow Pine, Douglas fir, Ponderosa pine, and eastern white pine amongst others. In addition, he also throw the spotlight on the versatility, durability, strength, aesthetic appeal, and price competitiveness of U.S softwoods as well as their strong environmental credentials.

He concluded with a short overview of the different uses that American softwoods have including for construction, structural use, outdoor decking and interior joinery.

Caterpillar unveils revolutionary seat suspension technology for wheel skidders Caterpillar Forest Products is introducing a revolutionary seat suspension technology for D Series wheel skidders that will provide unmatched comfort for machine operators and help improve the bottom line for logging contractors The Cat® Advanced Ride Management (Cat ARM) seat suspension system is a semiactive suspension that dampens vibration and minimizes end stop events, significantly improving operator comfort. Semi-active means the suspension can adjust the rate of damping in real time, a breakthrough technology.

The suspension senses the suspension motion and adjusts its rate of damping in response to changing ground conditions.

Cat ARM automatically applies higher damping in rough ground conditions like those found in clear-cut applications and applies lower damping under smoother conditions, such as well-kept skid trails.

The benefits of Cat ARM include: • T he operator is stabilized and experiences a smoother ride, reducing fatigue.

• End stop events are virtually eliminated, reducing accelerations the operator may be exposed to by up to 80 percent.

• High-ply rated tires may be considered to potentially improve tire life while maintaining a smoother ride for the operator.

Caterpillar’s new seat suspension technology can directly help maximize profitability for logging contractors because improved operator comfort and efficiency and reduced fatigue enable: • Increased utilization of the skidder • Extended shifts • Potentially faster cycle times • Potentially longer skid distances

A traditional air ride suspension system has limitations, notes Matt McDonald, product specialist for Cat wheel skidders. When a skidder hits a stump or dips into a hole, for example, this causes the seat to move fast enough that a traditional air ride suspension system may not fully dampen the movement, allowing the seat to hit a physical end stop. These end stop events cause fatigue, and they normally are the reason that operators attribute for a poor or uncomfortable ride.

The semi-active feature of the Cat ARM seat suspension system virtually eliminates end stop events and greatly reduces vertical acceleration (g-force). An analysis by Caterpillar comparing Cat ARM and a traditional air ride seat suspension measured vertical displacement and vertical acceleration for both. Cat ARM greatly outperformed the traditional air suspension. The tests showed that Cat ARM virtually eliminated end stop events, reducing acceleration by up to 80 percent. Cat ARM clearly stabilizes the operator and provides a smoother ride.

Besides greatly improving operator comfort, the new Cat ARM seat suspension system delivers

value for logging contractors. In addition to increasing durability of the seat suspension structure, improved comfort and reduced fatigue for operators allow them to remain in the machine for longer periods of time. Increased utilization of the skidder increases revenue and profit potential, particularly in the case of long skids, when return speed and cycle times are critical. Skid distances potentially could be extended, minimizing operating costs for the job site.

In addition, many logging contractors use the lowest ply rated tire possible on wheel skidders in order to improve ride quality since a lower ply tire provides more of a cushion or “give.” High ply tires can increase load carrying capacity and potentially improve tire life, but they typically cause a stiffer ride.

The introduction of the Cat ARM

suspension, however, will allow logging contractors to consider high ply tire options while keeping the operator more comfortable.

Casey Bowman of Bowman & Sons Logging in Danville, GA., U.S.A., is one of the first loggers to have a Cat D Series wheel skidder retrofitted with the Cat ARM suspension system. “I never feel the seat hit the stops anymore, which helps my back feel a good deal better at the end of the day,” said Bowman.

All Cat D Series wheel skidders can accept the new suspension. Cat ARM will be standard on 545D and 555D wheel skidders, and it will be an option for the 525D and 535D models.

Slick Rock Lumber to open a new sawmill in Virginia Slick Rock Lumber has announced opening of a new hard and softwood sawmill in Halifax County, Virginia reports Scrap Monster. . The new operation is expected to create around 13 jobs.

In addition, the company has also announced that it will ensure that three-fourths of its total timber needs will be sourced from Virginia land owners. The company will make investments amounting to $535,000 in site improvement and

equipment. Slick Rock Lumber is expected to purchase more than $5 million worth of Virginia timber over the next three years.

The announcement to this effect was made by Governor Terry McAuliffe. According to him, the administration intends to support Virginia’s forest products sector by partnering with Slick Rock Lumber.

He added that the new sawmill would be an important step forward in its efforts to build a new Virginia

economy. The proposed mill will create employment opportunities in the region and also provide big boost to the region’s economic vitality.

According to Todd Haymore, the investment marks new opportunity for Halifax County and its local forestland owners.

The mill’s proximity to sustainable and abundant wood baskets of Southside Virginia makes it well positioned to reap success, he

noted.

The project is supported by Governor’s Agriculture and Forestry Industries Development (AFID) Fund which is administered by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS).

Governor has already approved $12,000 grant from the AFID Fund as assistance to the project.

Dieffenbacher supplies particle board plant to Swiss Krono The Swiss wood-based panel manufacturer Swiss Krono has commissioned Dieffenbacher to supply a state-of-the-art particle board plant. Planned as a replacement investment, the plant is designed to provide an annual capacity of around 400,000 cubic meter. It is used to manufacture conventional particle boards in thicknesses ranging from 6 to 60 mm, as well as thin boards up to 2.5 mm thick and lower-density lightweight particle boards.

The scope of supply includes the gluing system, forming station, forming line, press and diagonal saw. Along with the new CPS+

press—for which five orders have now been received—the plant features additional innovative machine components that could set new standards around the world. “This project includes the most state-of-the-art equipment currently available on the market.

We are proud that we were able to win over Swiss Krono with our innovative machine concept”, says Bernd Bielfeldt, Head of the Wood Business Unit.

The plant uses the Dieffenbacher EVOjet P gluing system, which was first tested in the field in 2013 and is now established on the market.

The EVOjet P achieves glue savings of up to 15% compared to conventional particle board gluing systems. The plant is also equipped with a Formator P — the most innovative forming technology available. The Formator P is a combination of a segmented scalper and a Dieffensor; it is integrated into the forming station.

This new forming technology is designed to provide an extremely high forming accuracy. At the heart of the plant is the new CPS+ continuous press with a length of 34.5 m and a width of 2400 mm.

comes with optimized pressure distribution — these are the crucial features that enable superior board tolerances to be achieved.

When it comes to automation, Dieffenbacher uses state-of-the-art technology from Siemens (S71500 with TIA Portal). Since 2013, Dieffenbacher has been the only plant manufacturer in the field of wood-based panels to implement this future-proof automation solution as standard in its projects.

Södra acquires Crown Timber Södra has acquired the remaining shares in Crown Timber Group Plc. Södra previously held approximately 20% of the shares in Crown Timber.

“The UK is our principal export market. This acquisition gives us valuable control over the entire supply chain - from the forest to the end users - and provides potential for growth,” says Jörgen Lindquist, Interim President at Södra Wood.

Crown Timber is a marketleading distributor of structural timber products to the UK and Irish timber engineering sector and to timber and builders’ merchants.

Crown Timber will become part of the Södra Wood business area within the Södra Group. It will incorporate all of Södra’s activities in the UK and Irish markets, including those to be conducted by the sales company that Södra was planning to launch in the UK in the 1Q 2016.

“We will gain an organization in the UK and Ireland that we already have in a number of our other markets, with control over the entire supply chain - from the forest to the customer. We also want to develop the business by adding the remainder of our range, meaning interior wood products, solid

Segezha Group acquires Lesosibirsk LDK No. 1 The largest vertically integrated wood processing enterprise in Russia Sistema JSFC announces that its subsidiary LLC LesInvest (part of Segezha Group) has acquired a controlling stake in OJSC Lesosibirsk LDK No. 1, the largest vertically integrated wood processing enterprise in Russia, based in Krasnoyarsk region.

Fyodor Potapenko, who has

served for many years as head of Segezha Group’s Sokol Wood Processing Plant, a producer of high-quality lumber and wood products for housing construction, was appointed as the new CEO of Lesosibirsk LDK No. 1.

The management of Segezha Group has already commenced integration of the Lesosibirsk plant into the Group and realisation of synergies with existing product

lines.

Holzindustrie Schweighofer creates 60 new jobs at its lumber mill in Kodersdorf, Germany

Following its acquisition of the lumber mill in Kodersdorf, Germany Holzindustrie Schweighofer has successfully optimised the use of its existing capacities. The lumber mill expands operations

from two shifts to three, and the planing factory will add a fourth shift. Holzindustrie Schweighofer increases the size of the workforce at Kodersdorf by about 20%, or around 60 jobs.

“The mill in Kodersdorf has a skilled workforce and is advantageously located at the tri-border region of Germany, Poland, and the Czech Republic.

This location means that it is also in an excellent position to

supply Western European lumber markets. And thanks to a reliable supply of raw materials and an excellent supplier base, the factory is now also making a significant contribution as a supplier to our manufacturing operations in Romania,” says Georg Erlacher of Holzindustrie Schweighofer, explaining the positive developments in the company.

Södra exports of energy products on the rise Södra’s bioenergy production is growing, and more and more agreements are being signed.

Exports of energy products are also on the rise. While the Danish market, in particular, is showing strong demand, more markets are beginning to show an interest.

Södra’s main energy product market is Sweden, but the export market is growing. In addition to the Danish market, there is a major interest in Norway and large volumes are being used to replace coal in the UK. In Denmark, Södra’s energy products are used by both individual consumers and large thermal power stations. Deliveries mainly comprise pellets and briquettes, but also shavings. The density of pellets and briquettes is higher than sawdust, which makes them more energy efficient. And when fewer vehicles are needed to transport higher volumes, this

efficiency is doubled.

“We haven’t seen the end of this yet,” says Gustav Tibblin, Director of Business Development at Södra. “Bioenergy is a future issue for all of society, and Södra’s raw material has a very high standing in the market. The raw material from our members’ estates comes from responsible and certified forestry, and we utilise every part of the tree.

New energy products One example of new energy products is the briquettes, or “heat logs,” that are made at the sawmill in Kinda. They are symmetrical bricks used as firewood in stoves, and are produced from the chips and sawdust at the final stage of the sawing process, after the timber has been dried and planed.

The product is therefore derived from a secondary flow, and demand

is growing: “In two years, our annual production has grown from around 100 to 1,500 pallets,” says Patrik Wass, Sawmill Manager at Kinda.

“The briquettes burn longer and generate more heat compared with conventional logs.”

Energy generation plays a natural role in Södra’s operations, according to Gustav Tibblin, and Södra produces energy, electricity and fuel as part of all its processes

- in the forest, in the mills and in the sawmills.

“The culture of Småland is deeply ingrained in our roots; we don’t let anything go to waste,” says Gustav Tibblin. “At the same time, society is undergoing a transition, and we have to replace fossil-fuel energy with bioenergy.

We can, and want, to participate and contribute. Growing energy is what we do.”

Alexander Katsevich CTO at iTomography Corporation and Dr. Federico Giudiceandrea CEO at Microtec for their groundbreaking research and development work that has resulted in the realization of a high-speed X-ray-based computed tomography (CT) instrument and method for nondestructively scanning whole tree logs (roundwood).

in the sawmilling process possible and effective. This new technology enables the identification of undesirable board features inside the logs, such as knots, pitch pockets, cracks, and rot, before they are sawn. This data is then used to control and optimize the board output by cutting the logs in a way that increases the value of the sawn products by approximately 10%.

Jörgen Lindquist to be provisional President of Sodra Wood business area Södra’s business area for sawn and planed timber plus interior wood, Södra Wood, has been suffering from weak profitability for some time. The extensive restructuring programme over the past few years has not yielded sufficient results.

Now, Sodra Wood has decided to designate Mr. Jorgen Lindquist as interim president of Sodra Wood business area after Hakan Svensson.

Jörgen Lindquist has served as Södra’s CFO since September

2015 and was previously CFO and interim President of Swedspan, an industrial company in the IKEA Group. Jörgen Lindquist will assume his position immediately and will serve as the interim Business Area President in addition to his role as the CFO. A process to recruit a new President for Södra Wood has commenced.

“Despite intensive efforts with many major and significant changes in recent years, we have not achieved the profitability and

strategic position expected of Södra Wood. It is only natural, therefore, that we are now seeking a new leader who can help the business area move forward,” says President and CEO Lars Idermark.

Weinig enjoys excellent sales at the Holz-Handwerk The Weinig Group was represented in Nuremberg across 1,600 sq m with an integrated stand concept for solid wood and panel processing. The healthy visitor numbers on their stand on all four days of the trade fair were reflected in excellent sales. The sales figures were twice as high as those in 2014.

It was also the first time that the trade fair presence was shaped by the THINK WEINIG motto. The slogan represents the new sales and marketing strategy, with which Weinig aims to communicate its unique group expertise in the sector even more powerfully in the market. “Whatever the challenge they face, our customers should think of Weinig first,”said Chief Sales and Marketing Officer Gregor Baumbusch, underlining the intention behind THINK WEINIG. One innovative highlight was the premiere of the Powermat 1500.

The high-performance moulder has the new ComfortSet simple operating concept and is equipped with CNC-controlled axes. The modular system makes the Powermat 1500 extremely flexible.

Besides the planing and profiling machines, Weinig’s window production technology also met with the expected great interest in Nuremberg.

The spotlight was on Industry 4.0, which is synonymous with intelligent production and has been broken down by Weinig to meet the requirements of window manufacturers, particularly in small businesses, thus enhancing the value creation of its customers.

Weinig exhibited a comprehensive system of components, based on an integrated, modular complete control concept, which is available in all Conturex series. Automated complete solutions that network the cross-cut saw with pre-planing machine and the downstream Conturex CNC processing center also attracted significant attention.

The other Weinig product units also experienced strong demand.

There was a particular focus on cutting, where Weinig impressed with innovative crosscut systems and scanner technology. The increasingly important Weinig Service division was presented in a dedicated information area.

With its comprehensive Service package, including the Weinig App, Financing, Education/ Training, Pre-owned Machines and project specialist Weinig Concept, Weinig precisely met the needs of customers that demand optimal support with the production process in a time of increasingly complex challenges.

A total of 140 machines and systems sold at the end of the four-day trade fair represented an exceptional result for the Weinig Group. Planing and profiling machines accounted for a remarkably high proportion of orders, including a number of deals for the new generation of the entrylevel four-sider, the Cube Plus.

Other success stories included the Conturex systems, which have enabled Weinig to reassert its leading position in window production technology. Volume and value of West coast log, lumber exports down in 2015 The latest data summarizing West coast log and lumber exports in the fourth quarter of 2015 were released on March 16 by the U.S. Forest Service’s Pacific Northwest Research Station. The data—covering exports during October, November, and December 2015—were compiled and analyzed

by Xiaoping Zhou, a research economist with the station.

US imports of hardwood flooring increased by 30% in 2015 US imports of wood flooring increased again in 2015, following a year of significant growth in 2014, ITTO has reported.

Hardwood flooring imports were worth $47.4 million in 2015, up 30% from 2014. Imports from all countries increased, but the

strongest growth was in Canadian shipments where manufacturers benefited from the weak Canadian dollar.

Indonesia and Malaysia were the largest sources of imports at $10.7 million and $10.1 million, respectively. Hardwood flooring

imports from Indonesia grew by over half from 2014. Imports from China were worth $8.7 million, up 19% from the previous year.

Imports of assembled wood flooring panels were worth $136.5 million, up 3% from 2014.

in imports from Canada, while assembled wood flooring imports from China fell 10% in 2015 to $60.7 million. Indonesia exported $8.1 million worth of assembled flooring panels to the US in 2015, up 6% from the previous year

In January 2016, Brazilian exports of wood-based products (except pulp and paper) declined 6.6% in value compared to January 2015, from $187.5 million to $175.2 million, ITTO reported.

However, pine sawnwood exports increased 13.5% between January 2015 ($17.8 million) and January 2016 ($20.2 million). In terms of volume, exports increased 33.5% year on year in January from 76,400 cubic metres to 102,000 cubic metres.

Tropical sawnwood export volumes in January 2016 fell almost 11%, from 27,900 cubic metres in January 2015 to 24,900 cubic metres in January this year. There was an even sharper fall in the value of exports (-21%) from $15.3 million in January last year to $12.1 million this year.

Pine plywood exports followed the downward trend falling 16.4%

from $31.8 million to $26.6 million in January 2016 in comparison with figure of January 2015.

However, there was a steep rise in the volume of exports which increased by almost 21%, from 85,300 cubic metres in January last year to 102,900 cubic metres this year.

Tropical plywood, export volumes increased 13% from 5,500 cubic metres in January 2015 to 6,200 cubic metres in January this year while the value of exports fell 21.4% from $2.8 million to $2.2 million year on year.

As for wooden furniture, the exported value fell from $26.4 million in January 2015 to $23.6 million in January 2016, a 10.6% fall in the total exports of the product during the period.

Upgrading of the edger system at Setra Rolfs Saw LIMABs measurement system, the BoardProfiler 3D-TE, for cross conveyor edger optimization at Setra Kalix

I

n early 2015 Setra Wood Products in Kalix took the decision to upgrade its edger to obtain a higher yield. The edger line was equipped with an older measurement system from Saab WOOD. The choice was between building a new edger or to do an upgrade. “In terms of investment cost, the decision to upgrade was pretty easy,” said Hans Liljeström, Site Manager. “With the suppliers LIMAB, Andor Automation and Höga Kusten Teknikkonsult we found a competitive and interesting solution.”

In the summer of 2015 LIMAB got the order for the measurement system, Andor for the automation solution and the Höga Kusten Teknikkonsult for control and mechanical solutions.

The requirement was 97% yield, but the target was set to 98%.

Simultaneously, the demand for the

production rate was set to 25 pcs / minute, with a goal of 30 pcs / minute. The installation was made in autumn 2015.

Before the edger all boards are transported in a cross conveyor.

LIMABs measuring system, the BoardProfiler 3D-TE, is installed between the elevator and the linear infeed to the edger. Since the space does not allow an installation of a measuring system which measures in a lineal direction, LIMABs BoardProfiler 3D-TE fits perfect.

The system scans with 3D laser technology the whole board in a cross conveyor and demands a very limited space.

When the piece of timber is scanned, the system makes an optimization based on established rules. The cut proposal will then be sent to a PLC which controls the positions of the saw blades and servos. This integration is

made by Andor Automation. The BoardProfiler 3D-TE is also able to tilt the board to further maximize the yield.

“During the takeover a verification test was made to verify that the yield requirements were met,” says Hans Liljeström. “We found that the requirements were achieved and that the yield was actually higher than expected”.

This also applies to capacity, which is now consistently around the target of 30 pcs / minute.

“We are convinced that there are more sawmills that are interested in our BoardProfiler 3D-TE” says Christian Tellvik, Business Area Manager at LIMAB. “Many edger mills have older

measurements and automation systems and with a set-up similar to what we have installed at Setra Wood Products in Kalix they could raise their yield considerably.”

The measuring system BoardProfiler 3D-TE is especially designed for cross conveyor edger optimization. LIMAB also has a system of linear process, BoardProfiler 3D-LE, which can also handle edgers with Rip-Saws up to six blades. The sensors are developed and manufactured by LIMAB and uses the latest laser technology to measure accurately and on high speed lines. The sensors are mounted on a specially adapted measuring frame with scanning from two sides.

chieving an increase in production and flexibility in its recovery were the primary goals for investing in a new optimized carriage line for Bégin & Bégin inc. (B&B) at Lots-Renversés, Quebec. The mill’s outdated line was not up to the task of meeting the company’s goals for higher production, and it knew it was losing out on both value and volume recovery. The company approached USNR/Söderhamn Eriksson to supply a new carriage

line that would allow it to maintain its strong position in the market, and expand its product base to attract new business.

B&B has been in business since 1925, and plays a leading role in the industry in its region. The mill comprises 50,000 sq. ft.

(4645 sq.m) of production area where it operates four profit centers; a chips plant equipped with a USNR 96” (2400mm) chipper, a second line for sawing pre-cut pallet stock, a third for

processing large-diameter and high value logs to supply the furniture and flooring market, and a cut-tosize plant for producing moldings and millwork. Output includes a wide variety of hardwood products ranging from wood chips to flooring, molding and millwork, to pallet stock and railway ties.

He related that the operation processes primarily maple and yellow birch to National Hardwood

In 2011 USNR installed a new 96” (2400mm) chipper, and prior to that a vertical resaw system that is located downstream and fed from the carriage. B&B appreciates the quality of the USNR equipment and the excellent service it received during the installation and subsequent support of these capital investments.

The 3-knee carriage handles high value logs up to 36” (910mm) diameter, with output processed by the USNR vertical resaw and a combination gang/edger.

The new carriage has had a big impact on the capability of the line. The old carriage system had front scanning only, and with outdated optimization the only solution available was based on minimum opening face (MOF).

The new system with MillExpert optimization significantly expands this capability to include full log breakdown grade sawing solutions generated from dense 3D modeling via data collected from front and

For B&B, throughput was another issue with the old carriage system as the knee speed was slow 8-10” (200-255mm) per second.

The new USNR 42” (1066mm) carriage offers features that improve throughput, including 3 on-board hydraulic chain turners, 3 board ejectors, a new 100 hp electric drive, and knee speed of up to 20” (500mm) per second. And the new ControlLogix PLC control system offers additional flexibility.

sensors, collecting dense scan data from up to 300 degrees of coverage around the circumference of the log. Some customers install systems with front scanning only, and while this configuration does a good job of calculating the log’s shape it cannot compete with the addition of tens of thousands of data points that a back side camera provides. Seeing the whole log allows more accurate product fits on the front and back of the log, leading to enhanced recovery.

Optimization capability The MillExpert optimization system at the carriage is capable to model downstream breakdown solutions to maximize value and volume recovery. These parameters are assigned by the mill in accordance with National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA) grade rules, and each scenario specifies a set of allowable cutting and optimization options for logs assigned to that fiber class. combination of cuts from the faces and center block, would yield the highest value combination. The cut blocks will then be processed into boards downstream at the resaw and combination gang/edger.

B&B has realized several benefits from this investment.

Frédéric related, “With the old system we only had one breakdown option, and that was minimum opening face (MOF). With the new line we have added another option which is full log breakdown.

This gives us a more optimum breakdown solution for the boards that are produced.” He also reiterated that he is pleased with the benefit that comes with both front and back side scanning. “We only had one scanner before so we had to scan it once, turn it and then scan for the second side. Now we scan the log once and we’re done.” In addition to collecting far more data for greater accuracy, this configuration contributes greatly to higher throughput.

As part of the implementation of the new carriage line, a team from B&B travelled to USNR’s facility at Plessisville, QC for

training. Frédéric also gives credit to Jacques Beaulieu, mill manager, who worked closely with the USNR team during installation and commissioning.

360° breakdown optimization In only three seconds the CT Log scans a 6 meter log. Afterwards, all information, 1500 images per second, are converted into a real time 3D log image with a resolution of 1mm (0.04 in). As each log is scanned, the CT Log optimization software determines the best cutting pattern and breakdown parameters based not on volume, but on the real value of the final sawn products. Internal defects such as knots, splits, species and foreign objects are considered during the value calculation.

Directly in front of the saw, a Microtec Logeye fingerprint scanner recognizes each log and its angular position on the conveyor, and forwards the CT-optimized cutting solution to the saw.

centering unit from EWD brings each log in position, corrects skewing and fixes and centers the log in the required angle. The log is then broken down according to the previously defined cutting pattern and sawing parameters from the CT-scanner.

Afterwards, a flexible Quadro bandsaw with Flying Bandsaw Technology cuts up to two boards on each side. A second flexible Quadro bandsaw, also equipped with the Flying Bandsaw Technology, further cuts out up to four slices of lumber.

The entire front end of the sawmill, from CT Log to the edgers and the sorting line, is operated by two operators.

Fifth CT Log installation Including HIT this is the fifth CT Log scanner that is installed and running. “Our goal is not to cut a higher quantity, but to generate a higher added value through more yield”, explains HIT CEO Hilmer.

The perfect harmony of CT Log and the flexible band saws allows the production of high quality lumber from our good logs. Lower quality logs are also highly optimized by hiding or sawing around defects, especially metal inclusions that are quite frequent in this area.

CT Log is the first computer tomography scanner for logs. It’s

360° view provides a complete HD-image of the inside of a log, which can be used for any kind of breakdown optimization.

HIT’s chief executives are sure that they made the right decision in choosing Microtec and EWD. They expect a quick amortization of this plant due to several savings such as avoiding log pre-sorting, a minor wastage of the saw due to a cut-in of the green wood as well as the invincible optimization and the higher yield of lumber. According to an independent research report of the Warsaw and Stuttgart Universities, the higher yield lies between 6 and 9 percent.

Maine mill. It was a considerable challenge since the mill had been closed since 2008, the pool of specialized workers in its surrounding area was limited, and the reuse of existing equipment had to be maximized all the while respecting budgetary constraints.

one-of-a-kind project where the trimming and sorting line would be used to simultaneously process both rough-sawn lumber and dressed lumber. This particular design paired with high throughput and Comact optimization technologies was the only way J.D. Irving could reach its targets.

The watchwords for sawing

were high throughput, minimum gap between logs, and maximum lug fill. A C-1 Scan examines each log after debarking to determine its profile and forwards it to one of the four sorting bins according to its optimal cutting pattern.

Sawing is done in batches to reach higher speeds. Each sorting bin is equipped with a WaveFeeder™ to feed the sawing line while minimizing the gap between logs and by optimizing lug fill thanks to its high performance.

For sawing, Comact proposed a DDM, a piece of equipment that performs both the primary and secondary breakdowns. It is specifically designed for this kind of project where space is restrained, product offering is limited, and logs are of small diameters. In order to meet production targets, it had been determined that throughput would have to reach 650 fpm.

The planing line is found right next to the sawing line to optimize mill floor space. The planer already belonged to J.D. Irving, but was relocated from another mill to Ashland. At its outfeed, dressed lumber proceeds to a transfer where it is finally mixed with roughsawn lumber.

As for the trimming line, it is meant to run at 240 logs per minute to keep up with sawing and planing flow. Comact already had the expertise to run these pieces of equipment at such a speed, but the fact that rough-sawn

lumber was mixed with dressed lumber required some adapting.

First, the Rotary Lug Loader had to be programmed to handle rough-sawn lumber of various dimensions simultaneously with dressed lumber without the tongs marking the lumber. Then, the GradExpert™, Comact’s automated grading system, also required some tweaking to recognize lumber finishes and sort them according to their respective grades. Backed by extensive experience in dealing with optimization for both finishes, the Comact optimization team broke new ground by optimizing them simultaneously.

Finally, the automated board sorter is split in two at mill outfeed where there are two stacking lines.

Since most operators were newly-hired employees, several

training sessions were offered to them to ensure they would take ownership of the equipment properly. Once the project was over, after-sales service was handled by the BID Group Serviplus team made up of qualified, professional technicians who are available 24/7.

Operational performances at this mill are stunning. Only 60 employees produce 100 MBFT of a limited number of products, namely 1 X 3, 1 X 4, 2 X 3, 2 X 4, and 2 X 6 in lengths varying from 7 to 12 feet, annually.

Cant Face Scanner The Cant Face Scanner is the allnew Comact optimizer with vision for secondary breakdown. This scanner was developed towards the end of 2015 and has been specifically designed for sawmills where detection of the presence of some visual defects is

required to optimize cutting so as to produce value-added products. The first two Cant Face Scanner applications were sold to Southern Yellow Pine mills located in the Southern USA. The presence of knots is the main defect of this fiber. If sawing is not properly

optimized, the sawmill owner can quickly see his profitability nosedive.

The technology used for the Cant Face scanner is made up of leading-edge cameras that produce images of unparalleled quality.

Owing to the high resolution of these images, the Cant Face Scanner can easily detect knots, cracks, stain, rot, and more visual defects, present on cants.

Optimization is also achieved through cant geometry detection done by a 3DPro laser head. The optimization algorithm combines the acquisition from both these sources and defines the optimal solution.

This piece of equipment has been recently installed at Westervelt Lumber in Alabama (USA). Its installation was done in parallel with that of a TBL3 for secondary breakdown. The TBL3 transforms cants into pieces ready for trimming thanks to a profiling module, canters, and a gang edger.

Adding an optimization system upstream enabled Westervelt to reach higher raw material yield since its product offer consists of several value-added products.

One of the special features of the Westervelt Cant Face Scanner is its cant tracking system. In the mill, cants can get mixed between the optimizer and the TBL3 infeed since they transit on an accumulation transfer. Regardless,

Over the last years, the Comact GradExpert™ has been the choice of several mills for automated grading upstream of the planer.

Even though this equipment has been standardized to meet Comact quality standards, it is personalized according to the needs of each client. This particular aspect, paired with the experience and expertise of the Comact team who has already installed 95 such systems, convinced several businesses to adopt it, among them, Busque & Laflamme in Quebec (Canada) where Comact installed a GradExpert™ towards the end of 2015.

One of the special aspects of this project was that the Comact design team had to come up with a special GradExpert™ configuration so that it could be integrated into the existing planer line.

SNR/Söderhamn Eriksson was recently supplier for a major kiln retrofit project for Roseburg of Dillard, Oregon. Roseburg was banking on increasing drying capacity to capitalize on a burgeoning market for its kiln dried products. At the same time it implemented kiln technology improvements that are positively impacting its efficiency and the quality of its output.

Roseburg is one of the largest capacity sawmills in the US. Today the Dillard complex comprises a sawmill, kilns, planer mill, plywood plant, particle board plant, and cogeneration power house. The company also has operations in Montana, California, Louisiana and Mississippi.

Jeff Thompson is general manager of the Dillard operation.

He says the sawmill is primarily a stud mill, and also produces landscape timbers. The mill was drying 70-75% of its production and selling the rest green, but it wanted to increase the dry output to improve margins and to respond to opportunities in the market.

Jeff commented, “The decision to upgrade the kilns was really driven by the market. With where we thought it was headed, we decided to invest to capture more of the dry stud market. That sector is expanding, and we get a premium on dry stud products.”

time Roseburg undertook a steam conversion to increase capacity from 10 to 50 lb. extraction. The steam conversion served to increase the heat applied to the process, and decrease the drying time.

Phasing delivery The re-roof project was done in phases, with 2 roofs delivered at a time to allow continuous production and not overwhelm the lumber storage area. Jeff commented, “Our biggest challenge was downtime, and

A section of roof is complete, while another old roof has been removed awaiting installation of the new construction USNR really helped us with that by staging the delivery. We took 2 kilns down (functionally), tore the roofs apart and re-roofed while we were able to keep the other 6 functional.” He went on, “Safety was of utmost concern, but we were able to do the whole project without losing any production in the sawmill or planer/dry mill.”

From USNR/Söderhamn Eriksson’s perspective the biggest challenge was determining how the old roof was constructed and supported as no drawings of the old roof could be found. As well, coordination and timing of roof delivery and installation was critical to maintaining Roseburg’s production targets. Overall the project took about 4 months to complete.

Precise control with Kiln Boss and Moisture Sensing The kilns are operated via Kiln Boss controls integrated with the in-kiln moisture sensing system, to advance the drying schedule automatically from fiber saturation point (typically 25% to 27% moisture content) down to the equalization or conditioning step.

Then it is designed to shut off the kiln once the average moisture content target is reached; the system is proven to within 1% moisture content accuracy.

These kilns were already using the Kiln Boss system, and now it was upgraded to the latest version release. The in-kiln moisture

sensing system was new.

Improved process Jeff compared the old process with the new one. “In the past when the kiln cycle reached a stage where the operators thought it was done, they would shut the kiln down and open the doors allowing it to partially cool, and then test the wood with a hand meter. If it wasn’t quite done they had to shut the doors, heat the kiln back up and dry for additional time.

Each time we lost a huge amount of energy. Now with the in-kiln moisture meters, the sensors tell us when the load is done.

The kilns run a complete cycle without interruption; no wasted time and no wasted energy. They automatically shut down when the target moisture content is achieved.”

He continued, “We now have 3 different brands of control systems on our kilns, and USNR’s is by far the most user-friendly and easiest to learn. That is where we first focus training our new people because it is very intuitive, and the in-kiln moisture meters take out the guesswork.”

Responding to the market Jeff is well satisfied. “We were hoping to increase our percentage of dry output from 70% up to 85%, and we are currently exceeding that. With the in-kiln moisture sensing system integrated with Kiln Boss we are seeing an overall

increase in the quality of the lumber.” He is also pleased he decided to go this route instead of replacing the kilns. He said he did consider other vendors but, “We knew USNR was a pretty safe bet.”

This project is proof positive that sometimes the smartest

investment can be to retool older systems with new technology to bring them up to today’s standards.

Not only can it reduce downtime and greatly extend the life of valuable assets, it can allow mills to remain competitive for the longer term.

nce upon a time, operators would have chosen a certain chipper because it was made by a certain manufacturer with a reputation for high throughput. Likewise a decision may have been made based on a supplier’s reputation for reliability or chip quality.

Today, it is difficult to separate technology companies on this basis. Almost all can lay legitimate claim to being competitive on all the key metric including efficiency, flexibility, and serviceability, alongside those attributes listed above.

And so it has become

something of a scrum, with all manufacturers competing at every level for market share.

The Peterson 6910 Disc Chipper produces high quality paper chips when used with a Peterson 6800 debarker, or fuel chips as a standalone fuel wood chipper.

The 6910 is powered by a Caterpillar C27, Tier III, 1050hp (772 kW), or an optional C32, 1125hp (839 kW) engine. The 6910 has a five pocket disc, with several optional sheave sizes to make precisely the chip needed. The chipper disc is directly driven from a high-capacity PT-Tech hydraulic clutch and belts.

“Peterson knows that controlling the stems is critical for a high quality chip, and have minimised the distance from the feed roll to the disc for maximum control of the stems,” the supplier stated. “A primary and secondary anvil provides easily serviceable

cutting surfaces for the highest quality chip.”

The chipper housing features a quick release hood clamp, bolt in disc wear liners, and an oversized hood, which easily opens out of the way for superior disc access for knife changes. Servicing the 6910 is accessible from the convenient platforms around the engine and chipper.

Peterson 6300B drum chipper – more power and capacity “Our second new chipper for 2016 is the all-new Peterson 6300B drum chipper, which was designed for high volume biomass producers who have a wide variety of feed material, from logs up to 36 in (91 cm) in diameter, to brush and small feed stock,” Peterson stated.

The 6300B is powered by a 1050 hp (772 kW) C27 Caterpillar engine, and has an optional Tier IVi engine available. A PT Tech wet clutch has also been added to the machine.

At 85,000 lb (38,555 kg), the 6300B was designed for operations requiring high production and frequent moves between jobs.

The 6300B has two drum configurations; an 8-pocket drum to make standard biomass chips, or a 16-pocket drum to make microchips. An optional grate system has been redesigned

The chipper uses a 50 in (127 cm) diameter by 60 in (152 cm) wide drum. Other key features include a sloped feed deck for the ease of feeding and wear resistant AR450 wear surfaces on the drum pockets and shell. The feed chain has been upgraded to WDH120 for improved strength and long life.

Featuring durable AR450 wear surfaces, the 6300B comes standard with an 8-pocket drum rotor with one Babbitted knife per pocket. A 16-pocket drum rotor is available for chipping microchips.

to allow for adjustment from a microchip to a 1¼ in chip with the same grates.

Traditional Babbitt type knife systems are standard equipment, or an optional key knife system is available. Peterson’s chip accelerator system, adds load density, or throws chips well away from the machine for land clearing operations.

Wood chipping contractors across North America, whether they are performing right-of-way clearing or in-the-woods chipping, have increasingly utilized the popular TBC 435 ChipMax Biomass Drum Chipper that is manufactured by Terex Environmental Equipment (TEE). The chipper, originally designed by Continental Biomass Industries (CBI) and named the CBI 484 ChipMax, is designed for both European and North American end users as multiple chute configurations and rotor options are available to meet market demands.

While the TBC 435VT is geared for European chipping contractors for its top loading capabilities, the TBC 435 and TBC 435T include features that fit the needs of chipping contractors throughout North America. Available as a wheeled or tracked unit, its chip production rate has catapulted this compact, rugged and powerful machine to the top of the class for in-the-woods chipping.

“We recognized that most North American contractors typically end load trailers rather than top load,” said TEE Ecotec North American Sales Director Art Murphy. “The new generation ChipMax comes standard as an end load machine but can also be ordered with a Flex Chute configuration to top or end load chip trailers.”

Engineers responsible for the ChipMax’s facelift also provided the machine with a sloped infeed of four degrees. Originally, the

biomass chipper’s infeed was flat, a design that greatly benefits the material types and loading requirements in Europe. Unlike the cut-to-length wood that is commonly chipped overseas, those in North America are usually chipping whole trees, brushy tops and limbs.

“The first generation ChipMax was designed with a longer straight deck infeed, almost like a grinder feed trough, to handle cut-tolength logs,” said Murphy. “And that proved to be wildly successful throughout Scandinavia, Finland and other parts of Europe. That infeed is still available to suit the needs of those markets with the TBC 435VT model. In North America, where there is more inthe-woods chipping of whole trees, brushy tops and limbs, we needed to design an infeed that housed a sloped deck to help the contractors load material faster and more efficiently.”

Engineer for TEE, believes the new generation ChipMax is a major money saver for machine owners as well. The blower, which forces air to accelerate the chips from the chipping chamber and out through the discharge chute, is now beltdriven. The absence of a paddle in the blower creates a no-contact zone for the processed chips, which creates improved chip quality. This also leads to fewer wear parts for the end user to maintain. At 100+ tons per hour, loader operators are challenged in keeping up with the machine’s production capability as it can load a 120 cubic yard trailer in 10-15 minutes.

“The customer response from this machine has been phenomenal,” said Rooney. “From right-of-way contractors that are using the tracked-model chippers to those that are setting up on landings and using the rubber-tired unit. The production capabilities of the ChipMax is something we’ve worked hard to accomplish.”

Like the original 484 ChipMax, end users can choose from two 48”wide by 40” diameter rotor options depending upon which chip type fits their market. The two pocket rotor is designed for producing ½” to 1” fuel chips while the four-pocket rotor produces microchips measuring 1/8” to ½”.The wood microchips produce a consistent fiber length that dramatically reduces the overall cost of producing pellets and improves the function of small boilers.

CBI machinery is known for is proven durability and its goal was to produce a chipper as rugged as it grinders. The ChipMax is equipped with a Caterpillar C-18, 765 HP diesel engine and customers have the option of adding the patented Metal Detection System (MDS) to protect the rotor should any contaminated material enter. One final plus for end users, especially those moving from job to job, is the virtually limitless transportation abilities, namely that of the wheeled ChipMax model.

“We designed the wheeled unit so it could be designated as road legal anywhere in the United States,” said Rooney. “Machine owners can basically hook the chipper up to their own truck and go wherever they desire. The wheeled unit is road legal in both width and height.

One horizontal and two vertical hydraulically-powered feed rollers consume mounds of limbs and tops quickly, and large blades on the drum ends throw chips forcefully into collection trucks to pack in more material, thereby increasing efficiency and productivity.

Improvements from the previous model include dual air-brake axles rated to 22,500 lb, increased storage space for knives and tools in front of the axles, and a standard twin disc, manual-engage dry disc clutch.

The Doppstadt DH 910 SA-B is tough and reliable

Doppstadt describes its DH 910 SA-B unit as “reliable and costeffective”, “robust” and “heavyduty” chipper that reduces log and root timber, branches and wooden residues to big size wood chips.

Consistent, high-quality wood chips are produced from wood logs up to 900 mm in diameter. Instead of a discharge arm, this chipper discharges the material by means of a slewable rear conveyor, thus achieving highest throughput capacities by producing less fines.

The final wood chip size is determined by the feeding speed and by different quickly replaceable screening segments.

The sawmill owner says the machine runs smooth and quiet, with much less vibration than a previous chipper from a different manufacturer that constantly broke down. For this particular operation, the Model 2290S is configured to produce a large chip that will be composted then ground into mulch. Selling mulch is a profitable side business for many such mills; this particular operation sells approximately 2000 loads of mulch per year.

already be found in the name of the machine. The additional ‘DL’ stands for diesel engine (D) and longitudinal draw-in (L).

Longitudinal draw-in means the draw-in of the machine is not transversely to the driving direction but in the driving direction.

The machine is mounted on a slewing ring; this is why it can be loaded from both sides without turning the carrier vehicle.

Depending on the storage site the chipper can be set up within a short period of time. Material which lies on the other side of the machine does not have to be lifted with a crane.

Although heavy coarse chippers mainly work at fixed operational sites, mobility is extremely important. This is why the chassis is of high importance. Build on a

semitrailer with twin axle the HEM 820 DL is approved for 80 km/h top speed and can be transported with all semi-trailer tractors to changing job sites. Furthermore, the chipper is equipped with an antilock braking system as well as two jack stands with full rubber wheels.

In operation, the machine should be ideally loaded with a separate crane. However, there is the possibility to mount the crane directly onto the machine.

In this case, the chipper works completely independently from the towing vehicle. This semi-mobile combination is especially useful for application fields with large volumes such as power plants or chipboard plants.

Depending on the addon engine, different material discharge systems are possible. In the standard version, the chipper is delivered with the Mercedes-Benz OM 473 LA engine with a drive power of 460 kW (625 hp) with a maximum torque of 2,900 Nm. Having this engine installed the HEM 820 DL is the only chipper in its class with combined material outfeed either via blower or the conveyor belt.

The conveyor is extremely useful in small areas if the material has to be loaded onto HGVs. Additionally, there is the possibility to discharge the wood chips to the site. Then they can be passed to a

Jenz advises using the conveyor belt if possible. The advantage then is that the chipper drum has more power available. Furthermore, there is lower wear and the quality of wood chips increases because of less fines. The material discharge system with a conveyor belt works with two belts. One material collection belt and one belt for the discharge of the wood chips. This is leads to a very gentle material discharge. At the same time a high through-put is guaranteed.

offers the possibility to equip the machine with a Caterpillar engine, which is especially interesting for international customers due to the nationwide Caterpillar service. The CAT 18 has a drive power of 571 kW (776 HP) with a torque of 3,500 Nm and thereby 100 hp more than the Mercedes Benz engine OM 473 LA. Those who choose the Caterpillar engine should keep an eye on the material discharge system. Due to technical reasons, machines with caterpillar engines can only be produced with a conveyor belt.

Maintenance friendliness complies with the high JENZ standards. The screen basket cover can be opened hydraulically, which allows a quick and simple maintenance access. Hydraulic opening of the chipper rear panel means that the screen basket can be comfortably pulled out of the machine and replaced in just a few steps without requiring tools.

Thereby unavoidable set-up times can be reduced to a minimum.

“Overall the HEM 820 DL is designed for the fragmentation of hardwood up to 60 cm as well as soft wood up to 80 cm,” the manufacturer said. “The throughput rate of the machine is up to 300-400 lcm/h. An extremely large screen area of more than 2 m2 ensures a high through-put rate with low fines.”

The Heizohack wood chipper HM 14-860 K is the new top of the range model from Heizomat, having been improved over many areas and fine-tuned in comparison to the previous largest model, the HM 14-800 K. The infeed width of 1,215 mm and the maximum opening height of the upper feed roller (800 mm) remain the same, which allows short pieces with a diameter up to 800 mm (31.5 in) to be chipped.

The rotor diameter of the new chipper HM 14-860 K has been increased by almost 200 mm, giving a new overall diameter of 690 mm, therefore allowing whole trees to be easily chipped with a diameter of up to 650 mm (26 in). Unlike some machines, this maximum diameter is achieved whether the machine is chipping softwood or hardwood.

Due to the development of a completely new chipping rotor, the machine can produce an improved chip quality for smaller chips and in addition larger coarse wood chips for wood heating plants or large wood gasification plants.

In addition to the new design of the rotor, the rotor blade holding system has been completely redesigned. The new multipleblade system allows quick-change and the possibility of different sizes of blades.

The previous single retaining bolt has now been replaced with two and a reduced torque effort is now required. The adjustable depth limiters allow a variance in the aggressiveness of the rotor and this, in turn, can vary the chip sizes. Depending on client requirements, the operator can determine the right cutting system to the specification.

As with the previous model, the new rotor can accommodate 14 blades which are spread over the entire intake width.

The blade holding system is housed in the fully-welded and incredibly strong rotor unit with

the lower blade holders and the top clamping plates. All these are interchangeable wear parts.

The multi-part quick change shearbar consists of three individual segments edged with carbide. These can be used twice by turning and are easily replaceable. The use of this shearbar system in clean timber has dramatically reduced blade wear and increased chipping performance, being able to chip well in excess of 1,000 t of clean timber before requiring blade changing. As the edge of the shearbar does not wear, the

The two sieves installed in the chipper body are complemented by two sieves which are located in the rotor cover. The rotor lid can be easily opened and shut with a hydraulic hand pump thus making it very easy to change the sieves.

effectiveness and the efficiency of the chipping process is enhanced significantly. Standard steel shearbar segments can also be fitted into the machine if the customer requires this option.

The sieve surface has been enlarged by 30% compared to the previous biggest HEIZOHACK wood chipper. The sieves have been ergonomically re-designed and adapted with the aim was a higher material throughput, a lower proportion of produced fine material and easier handling when changing sieves. All sieves can be

The HE002 Power Control prevents overstressing of the tractor engine, there are now additional functions and parameters within the HE002 Stress Control which are optionally selectable. All functions of the machine are electro-hydraulic controlled from the operator’s seat.

The new wood chipper HM 14-860 K is produced at Heizomat under the name HM 14-860 KTL trailed and driven by tractor PTO. The Chiptruck version is HM 14-860 KL mounted on and powered by a Mercedes AROCS 3351 6x6. 510 hp.

A reasonable performance of the HM14-860 Chipper is achieved with a PTO input power starting at around 300 hp. With the truck version a powerful 510 hp engine of the Mercedes AROCS is used.

The power flow in the truck comes directly off the input shaft to the main gearbox. This allows the full torque generated by the truck engine to be transferred to the wood chipper. This is possible due

to the PTO (NMV) driven by the Mercedes engine.

The driving position is located in the truck cab and all work on the modification of the cab has been fully implemented by Heizomat itself. This ensures a smooth comfortable, quiet and efficient

operator environment.

With the truck version HM 14-860-KL, a Palfinger Epsilon M80F101 is used. This specific forest crane with its high lifting capacity and a range of over 10 m, assures that faraway chipping material can be reached and fed

into the wood chipper. Heizomat has also produced its own EnergyGrab – the Energy Grab HG 1250 fits perfectly on this machine and can also be applied to all other crane fed Heizohack wood chippers.

“As with all Heizohack models,

fter 20 years in and around the logging business, Rodney Rood, with Catamount Forest Products, knows a thing or two about being successful in the forestry business. One of those things is keeping his customers happy by providing them with a quality product through the use of reliable machinery.

“The inconsistency in the pulp and paper industry over the years has been the death of a lot of really great loggers,” he says. “I can’t tell you how hard it is to figure out what they want out of you every day. We’ve tried to turn our business toward something that was consistent and willing to give us more return for our hard work.”

When screening chips, Rood’s company tries to make the hardwood and softwood chips uniform so that 95% of his loads look exactly the same. The majority of the screen chips are of the hardwood variety with a small portion of softwood chips that are

used for bedding and playground areas. Their annual chipping volume ranges from 75,00090,000t depending on the ground conditions and weather.

However, not all wood is made for chips.

Many times they use feller bunchers and grapple skidders to extract the wood and use the hardwood pulp, which goes into the firewood processor or a screen chipper.

“If we’re screen chipping, we take and chip our wood that is firewood processor material and then screen it so that it can go through heating systems,” he added.

Consistency and keeping the product local, rather than shipping it out of state, is something to which Rood attributes his success in the logging industry.

Increased productivity, less maintenance Productivity and using reliable machinery are two major components Rood takes into consideration while on the jobsite. In order to be the most productive, Rood and his employees use three feller bunchers, three chippers, five skidders and six trucks. And in the last year, the company bought its second Vermeer WC2300XL whole tree chipper to add to their equipment fleet, which provides excellent fuel efficiency and efficient maintenance on the jobsite.

“The compact design on it, the ability to make consistent chips, everything just spoke to us,” Rood says. “The performance has never let us down. It’s unlike anything else. The service from Vermeer Northeast has been second to none, as far as I’m concerned.”

If their machines do have a problem, they have a full-time mechanic to help service the equipment by using the JDLink service.

“My mechanic can tell me when my equipment need servicing before I know it needs servicing,” he says. “He can go online and tell me my equipment is misfiring on a certain cylinder. So he knows more about the running condition of my equipment in today’s society than I do. Our maintenance program is very vigorous and up to date because the fellow that runs it wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Through an ease of serviceability, Rood and his 14 employees at Catamount Forest Products can provide a quality product for his customers for years to come.

Heavy machines make light work for operators

Feller Bunchers International Forest Industries annual review of feller buncher technology has turned up a peculiar mix of raw capacity increases combined with a greater range of improvements designed to enhance operator comfort

H

ow feller buncher manufacturers prioritise improvements to continue evolving their product ranges is a fairly straight forward process.

They generally ask the customer base what they’d like and then, the best ones anyway, work with the customers to achieve the desired results. Usually, there is a request for more power, or for better serviceability, or greater comfort, or improved flexibility etc, and suppliers set to work on delivering one of those areas as the priority enhancement.

Yes, of course the whole unit generally get a touch up with bits and bobs added or taken away so suppliers can claim to be taking great strides forward across the spectrum of machine functions, but it will invariably be one particular functional improvement on which the manufacturer hopes to hang its hat and impress its market share (and woo market share from others). Because suppliers are competing for the same markets and consulting the same pool of

contractors, the priority on which any individual manufacturer chooses to focus is essentially the same as that on which the neighbouring supplier is labouring and so we have competition for who has upped power the most, or bettered serviceability by the largest margin, or provided the greatest leap forward in operator comfort, or improved flexibility the most.

Not so this year.

Along with the usual range of machine improvements, manufacturers have divided attention across two specific functions that have seen marked upgrades, almost in parallel. They are capacity or power, and operator comfort. This has given the market the peculiar mix of larger, more powerful machines with greater torque and overall grunt, which are also blessed with greater visibility, lighting, communication systems and a generally improved range of ‘mod-cons’ in the cab. It’s a good time to be an operator.

ER® Boom technology An important advantage common to Tigercat track feller bunchers is ER boom technology. ER technology provides increased production compared with conventional boom systems - especially in high cycle applications.

822D and LX830D spotlight The 822D and LX830D are the newest versions of Tigercat’s highly successful, high-production, compact feller bunchers - well

suited to thinning and final felling.

They both use the Tigercat FPT C87 Tier 4f engine – 245 kW (330 hp) for the LX830D and 232 kW (310 hp) for the 822D. The C87 is exceptionally fuel efficient and reliable. All Tigercat FPT engines are fully supported by Tigercat.

(The Tier 3 powered 822C and L830C are still available for non -Tier 4 final markets.)

The cab has been extensively redesigned to improve operator ergonomics and productivity. The engine enclosure has the lowest profile in the industry and sets a new standard for operator lines of sight. A rugged 18 cm electronic control system touchscreen display shows vital machine parameters and a camera system now replaces the skylight, which can easily become blocked with wood debris or snow. Finally, a powered, clamshell-style engine enclosure and side service platform allow complete access for easy maintenance.

The LX830D features Tigercat’s closed loop ‘X’ track drive option which provides even higher performance in steep terrain with quicker track speeds when climbing, improved turning performance, better multifunctioning and greater hydraulic efficiency.

Steep slope feller bunchers Tigercat leveling feller benchers are built on the Tigercat’s robust R7-150L-2 leveling undercarriage which provides exceptional stability in steep slope situations.

which further improves machine stability and operator comfort.

855C feller buncher For plantation eucalyptus applications, Tigercat offers the 855C carrier equipped with the 2000 series bunching shear. This combination is a low cost per tonne solution for harvesting eucalyptus pulpwood on account of the fast shear cycles and extremely efficient carrier hydraulics. The 2000 shear accumulates large, parallel bunches, improving skidder productivity. In addition, the shear is a lower cost, lower maintenance alternative to a disc saw felling head. In rocky or abrasive soil types, the maintenance and wear benefits are even more pronounced. The shearequipped feller buncher also burns less fuel compared with a disc saw.

The 855C can also be mated to the Tigercat 5185 directional felling saw for an extremely fuel efficient machine to fell and shovel large, high value timber.

LS855D feller director configuration The new LS855D model is powered by the Tigercat FPT N67 engine which generates 210 kW (282 hp) at 2,200 rpm. The extremely durable Tigercat 5195 directional felling head, along with the feller director boom system with integrated stick boom hose guarding is very effective in a number of applications that are not an ideal fit for a conventional disc saw-equipped feller buncher.

In steep slope applications, the LS855D can fell and extract independently, fell for a yarder or fell and bunch for a skidder. With a 950 mm cutting capacity, the directional felling head becomes especially advantageous when steep slopes are combined with oversize timber, allowing the operator to avoid the extra time and machine repositioning associated with double cutting. In addition, the LS855D has a unique closed-loop, twin motor swing drive with energy recovery for high performance and improved fuel economy.

Drive-to-tree feller bunchers

The John Deere M-Series tracked feller bunchers are game changers, according to the manufacturer Tigercat builds four models of drive-to-tree feller buncher models for the full range of thinning and final felling duties. The 718E is a compact and nimble machine specializing in demanding plantation thinning. The 720G and 724G are designed for thinning and clear fell applications and the 230kW (308 hp) 726G fells large diameter timber in tough terrain.

The G-series machines have been updated with a redesigned cab to improve productivity and operator comfort. There is a new heated and cooled seat, an easily repositioned electronic control module and better airflow for air conditioning and defrost. Visibility has been enhanced with a 10% larger front window and 21% larger rear quarter windows. The view over the back tires is the best in the industry – an asset in thinning applications.

Only Tigercat offers the WideRangeTM® infinitely variable transmission for drive-to-tree feller bunchers. Drive-to-tree feller bunchers spend a great percentage of the total duty cycle driving – to the next tree or to and from the bunch pile. WideRange allows the operator to travel more quickly than conventional two-speed transmission equipped feller bunchers. Quicker travel boosts productivity and reduces cost per tonne in high production thinning and final fell applications.

A two speed transmission is optional on the 720G and 724G Tigercat drive-to-tree feller bunchers are often equipped with bunching saws and shears for plantation applications with smaller diameter timber. In high cycle, multi-stem bunching applications, Tigercat bunching saws and shears contribute to significant productivity gains by increasing the number of stems per cycle. The result is more trees felled per hour, less travel, reduced wear on drivetrain components, lower fuel consumption and optimized skidder bunches.

Operator comfort is a priority in the John Deere L and M-Series machines like the Rapid Cycle System or the unsurpassed power-to-weight ratio, loggers are praising the Land M-Series machines.

M-series tracked feller bunchers When designing the M-Series tracked feller bunchers, it was vital to create a machine that met customer needs. Loggers recognized the changes, noting that the machines boast more power than previous machines they have used. As stated by Peter Schmidt of Forest Trotter Contracting, “performance wise the 953M machine is incredible in the way it handles.” One of the most popular improvements was to the undercarriage, which was designed longer and wider, creating maximum stability no matter the terrain. “It’s so stable, even on a hillside, the way it swings the wood around,” said Schmidt.

John Deere is committed to providing comprehensive solutions to meet the demands of nearly any logging application – including

steep slopes – and the M-series tracked feller buncher makes harvesting of those sites safer and more productive. The machine offers a longer, wider undercarriage for better stability and traction and optional auto-tilt and leveling cabs to help maximize operator comfort and productivity in challenging terrain.

Another notable improvement that caught the attention of operators was the redesigned operator station. “The cab of the machine is way more operator friendly, and that’s huge for guys that are spending 2,000 hours a year, 2,500 hours a year in these things,” said Dustin Clauson of Clauson Logging. Increasing operator comfort, the spacious cab features ergonomically designed controls. Fully adjustable armrests provide fingertip control of all machine functions, and an air-conditioned seat provides exceptional daylong comfort in the climate-controlled cab. Floor-tocelling front and side windows, plus an overhead skylight, provide

Rapid Cycle System (RCS) combines automated felling-head arm cycling with simple boom control, dramatically reducing operator fatigue while increasing efficiency and productivity. RCS can be tailored to individual skill levels and specific harvesting conditions.

L-series wheeled feller bunchers Designed to keep up with the demands of loggers in various conditions, the L-Series wheeled feller bunchers are John Deere’s most reliable and productive machines to date. Feedback from owners and operators since the launch of the 643L and 843L wheeled feller bunchers has be overwhelmingly positive. “The

L-Series machines are really powerful. You can adjust the machine to determine how much power you want. Not only just the engine, but how much power of pressure hydraulic fluid, to high, medium or low. It’s great,” said Austin Collins of McGill Timber.

A key feature of the L-Series is the best-in-class power-toweight ratio, which ensures steady multifunction performance in wet or hilly conditions. Optimal weight distribution and a longer wheelbase improve balance for better stability when climbing hills.

Another key feature that loggers are raving about is the increased head tilt. The ability to tilt the head back further allows the operator to put the weight of the trees over the top of the machine, keeping the rear wheels on the ground for better traction when backing up on hills.

L-Series customers are also noting increased operator comfort as a result of the updated cab. Cat track feller bunchers and harvesters are powerful machines that will boost production for loggers, and they also are known for their efficiency and low ownership and operating costs.

These machines have been designed with the best combination of lift capacity, swing torque and track power. Four models, which can be configured as feller bunchers or harvesters, are available to suit diverse logging applications and environments around the world.

The Cat 541 and the Cat 552

Series 2 models are full tail swing machines designed for highproduction clear-cutting or final felling on rough ground. The 552 Series 2 is a leveling machine for improved operation on steep terrain.

The Cat 521 and 522 B Series machines are near-zero tail swing feller bunchers or harvesters. The 522B is a leveling machine for select or clear-cut logging, and the 521B is a non-leveling model best suited for plantation thinning, biomass harvesting and mediumproduction select or clear-cut applications.

All models are equipped with the 226 kW (303 hp) Cat C9 ACERT™ engine, which has a proven track record of reliability and durability in the woods. New power management software, tailored for forestry applications, improves overall performance.

All models contain a fuel/water separator, engine air intake heater, and a dual­-stage air cleaner coupled with pre-cleaner.

Two or three hydraulic pumps, depending on the configuration, power the hydraulics to give loggers the performance they need. The strong, multi-functioning hydraulics and combination of swing and lift capacity help reduce cycle times and increase production.

Swing capacity is an advantage when working on steep slopes.

“The strong swing torque gives the operator the ability to swing large loads uphill,” said Jared Dunn Caterpillar Forest Products product performance engineer for the Series 2 and B Series machines.

Large structures such as swing bearings and booms are designed for longer life and durability. The tracks and all undercarriage rolling components are high-grade to extend track life and cut repair costs. Optional star carrier rollers aid with track retention and debris shedding in uneven terrain.

The side-byside radiator-oil cooler provides excellent cooling capacity for high production bunching and harvesting, and the on-demand Flexxaire fan activates only when required, allowing the cooling fan to purge debris from the radiator area for a cleaner cooling system. The IQAN control system automatically adjusts the Flexxaire fan blade angle, reducing horsepower demand and lowering fuel consumption. The purge cycle frequency and duration can be set by operator in the cab to suit varying application conditions.

The purpose-built forestry cab offers industry-leading operator protection and comfort. It meets ROPS, FOPS, OPS, OR-OSHA and WCB regulations and standards.

The ISO mounting system reduces

noise and vibration, increasing operator comfort.

Both lines also feature the only two-way simultaneous leveling system in the industry. The unique three-cylinder design of this system significantly reduces stress loads into the leveler structure, lower frame and track frames.

Extended service and maintenance intervals reduce machine service time, increase machine availability, and reduce operating costs.

of operation. The operator can extend and retract the head in a planar, parallel motion relative to the ground using one joystick while the opposite joystick makes subtle main boom height adjustments during this motion.

Fatigue is reduced, and operators also learn more quickly how to run the machine. The PRO System is adjustable for differing applications and varying slopes.

Other improvements include standard LED lights, which provide more visibility, last longer, and are more energy­efficient.

Cat Product Link™, another new standard feature, is a remote monitoring system enabling efficient fleet management. It allows customers to monitor equipment performance, activities, and location at any time. The easyto-use interface, VisionLink®, lets

The track machines can be configured with Cat felling heads for feller bunchers and SATCO forestry attachments for harvesters. Caterpillar is a distributor of SATCO forestry attachments, which include directional felling heads and harvesting and processing heads.

Featuring numerous enhancements from the original design, Barko’s B-Series harvesters and feller bunchers offer exceptional productivity and efficiency.

Purpose-built from the ground up, the machines incorporate extensive input from leading engineers, end users, and other forestry professionals.

The 240B and 260B machines are each driven by a 225 hp Cummins QSB6.7 Tier 4 Final diesel engine with SCR aftertreatment.

Offering a peak torque increase of 10% from the previous models, the harvesters deliver superior productivity and fuel efficiency for reduced operating costs. The machines are also equipped with an extreme cooling engine package and a 36-inch-diameter Flexxaire auto reversing fan that includes

The D5 undercarriage on the 240B offers ground clearance of 26.2 inches, compact track width of 9 feet, 4 inches, and maximum travel speed of 2.47 miles/h.

The 50,000 lb class unit delivers impressive maximum tractive effort of 65,833 ft-lb, and drawbar pull of better than 1.3 to 1 ratio, to handle steep hills and rough terrain with ease.

The 260B features a wider D7A undercarriage with 8-inch chain pitch for added stability with larger attachments in the 60,000-pound class machine size. It maintains

exceptional drawbar pull (1.13 to 1 ratio) and provides 65,481 footpounds of tractive effort. Ground clearance for the 260B is 29 inches.

Options for both models include various track shoe sizes and five counterweights ranging from 1,000 to 5,500 pounds.

Dual swing motors provide continuous rotation and high swing torque of 50,787 ft-lb for each model. The machines feature a heavy-duty, oversized swing bearing and offer outstanding reach with any attachment. Boom plumbing on both models has been enhanced.

Brute strength is complemented by responsive IQAN hydraulic controls, newly enhanced to provide even smoother operation.

The state-of-the-art operator’s station provides optimum operator comfort and excellent visibility around the entire working area.

Users can enhance visibility by adding an optional rearview IFI_PG24_28 Saw technology_HR 26 camera with 19/03/2014 a 7-inch14:20 LEDPage color display. Standard features of the climate-controlled cab include a large access door, exterior LED SAW TECHNOLOGY lighting, oversized skylight, sliding rear window, and a heated, air-ride seat.

The 240B and 260B each come with a 1.25-inch polycarbonate window for added safety on both harvesting and feller bunching jobs. Both machines are designed to work with factory-approved harvesting and feller bunching heads from a variety of manufacturers, including Barko’s own CF18 and CF22 fixed harvesting heads. Dual planetary gear rotate motors have been refined to facilitate efficient 360° continuous rotation of the attachment. For users who are more accustomed to pedal operation for rotating the head, a foot control option is The RZ 1 available as an alternative to the standard handle button.

high cutting speed allows the use of saw blades with smaller saw kerfs.

The use of counter bearings for the saw arbors with higher speeds reduces the bearing load to a minimum and the saw arbor units are suitable for robust and continuous operation. The counter bearings are hydraulically pulled off the saw arbors and moved upwards on a carriage. The saw arbors can easily be accessed for a comfortable, safe and fast tool change. Partly mechanised and fully automatic systems are available for changing the tools.

The maximum drive power is 1,000 kW. Two three-phase asynchronous motors drive each saw arbor, which are installed and offset by about 180° to allow the use of marketable standard

motors. Another advantage is the nearly complete compensation of the driving forces to minimise the bearing load.

“The high drive power makes it possible to split multiple products and to process large cross sections with high feed speeds,” the manufacturer said. “The machine is therefore suitable for saw lines where the existing split saw is reducing capacity.”

The single components of the machine produced by Linck are of high quality and precise design to ensure “excellent lumber surface quality and exceptional dimension accuracy”. This accuracy is also achieved by the optional use of guide plates being installed at the in and/or outfeed side, depending on the application.

A saw blade spraying device is available for processing resinous wood such as larch, protecting the saw blades against resin.

Additional advantages are the increased life time of the saw blades as well as reduced power consumption.

wenty-year-old Matt Cox operates one of the first Tier 4f Tigercat 822D track feller bunchers currently running in the US. Matt works for Mac McClure and Jim Hancock, owners of H & M Quality Logging near Elizabethtown, North Carolina.

The 822D has been on their job site for approximately two months with just over 250 operating hours, so BTB travelled down south to get some feedback on how the machine is running.

Mac McClure and Jim Hancock already own several Tigercat machines and knew right away that they wanted the new Tigercat 822D as soon as they heard about it. “Compared to other machines I have run, the Tigercat 822D is all around faster and better and the owners know it will last longer,” comments Matt.

Matt immediately noticed the 822D redesign allowed for a larger standard fuel tank, increasing capacity by 55 L (15 US gal), which lets him work longer before refueling. Matt also commented on how much he likes the easy to use computer system. He also noticed a big difference in the air conditioning with the higher capacity cooling and multistage cabin air fi ltration, which defi nitely improves his comfort in hot, dusty North Carolina summers.

“Bluetooth makes phone calls a lot easier now. I no longer have to try holding my phone on my shoulder while I am trying to operate. I also don’t have to worry about [accidentally] hitting the fi re suppression system as that has been moved out of the way,” explains Matt.

likes the easy service access of the powered engine enclosure, “Now you just open one area up and everything is there for you to see,” explains Matt. The engine compartment on the new 822D provides easy access to critical components such as hydraulic fi lters, the swing gearbox, cooling system components and both sides of the engine.

The 822D now comes standard with LED lighting for improved productivity. “Thankfully I don’t have to work in the dark but these LED lights are much brighter than any other cutter I have seen,” says Matt. He also notices a difference with the bigger undercarriage stating, “The machine has more stability and doesn’t jerk around as much as other machines I have run, it feels a lot smoother.”

H & M Quality Logging is currently working on a 300 acre (121 hectare) block. Mac and Jim aim to get 15-20 loads per day and fi nd that the 822D stays way ahead. The only bottleneck in the operation is how fast the trucks can come to take away the timber.

Matt has worked thinning jobs with a wheel feller buncher before and feels that the tight tuck boom on the 822D would work very well on

any thinning job.

H & M Quality Logging just purchased a new 234B loader and a 630E skidder from Tidewater sales specialist, Jeremy Strickland.

When asked why he keeps buying Tigercat equipment, Mac responds, “We just keep having more and more success with Tigercat equipment and most importantly they back us up with service.”

Matt is still considering going

back to school to get a degree but isn’t sure what he wants to pursue at his young age. Matt knows logging, so for now this works for him and he really enjoys it… especially when he gets to operate a Tigercat.

Komatsu’s Forestry Excavators Purpose-built forestry excavator models include the Komatsu PC210LL-10, PC240LL-10 and PC390LL-10 and feature Komatsu’s durable and well established forestry excavator platforms.

Customers can choose here between a highly flexible power take-off (PTO) drive with a CAT 3 interface and a robust Powerband drive that allows for a “virtually unlimited” lifting height.

With three different types of undercarriage available, the vehicle can be customised to suit any possible requirements in terms of ground pressure, traction, and overall width. Like the Raptor 800 with 640 hp, the 275 hp Raptor 300 features a ramped-up delta undercarriage on the rear.

The Vermeer FT300 forestry tractor with mulcher head gives contractors a powerful machine with the features they need to complete tough land-clearing jobs, according to the manufacturer.

“The FT300 mulcher head is a cut above the competition,” Vermeer said.

A ringed rotor design helps guide material to the 23 cutting tips for a cleaner cutting path, while also controlling the depth of cut. To customise cutting performance based on jobsite needs, contractors can choose from sharp planar, clad-faced planar or impact-resistant interchangeable tip options.

Also, a patent-pending selfpositioning deflector helps direct thrown material at a consistent angle regardless of head position, helping enhance jobsite safety and allowing the operator to focus on productivity.

The FT300 features a 300 hp (223 kW) Cummins QSL9 diesel engine that meets Tier 4 Final (EU Stage IV) emissions standards. It includes a horsepower ‘bulge’ that allows an increase to 320 hp (238 kW) when the engine drops from

The Prinoth Raptor 300 is known as the Little Brother to the larger 800 model 2,200 rpm to 2,000 rpm under load, helping to increase performance and productivity. With a 137-gallon (518.6 litre) fuel tank, the machine has ample fuel capacity to allow the operator to work longer without interruption.

The mulcher head hydraulic components are designed to operate below their rated capacity, which helps extend their life and reduce stress on the machine.

“Land-clearing work is the first step in timely and expensive projects, such as land development and pipeline installations,” Jeff Bradley, Product Manager for the Recycling and Forestry Segment at Vermeer, said.

“The power and features of the FT300 forestry tractor with mulcher head, along with innovations like the self-positioning deflector, helps increase productivity so contractors

can more easily meet the stringent deadlines they’re given.”

To meet contractors’ jobsite needs, the FT300 offers the flexibility of two track options. The 76.2 cm wide (30 in) single-grouser steel tracks provide superior tractive effort, while 83.8 cm (33 in) low ground pressure (LGP) tracks are ideal when working in soft ground conditions.

With all service points accessible from the ground, maintenance is convenient on the FT300. The engine compartment is easily accessible with two large doors that swing open to expose the engine, hydraulic pump, cooling system and other maintenance points.

Operator comfort was another top consideration in the design of the FT300. It is equipped with airride seating, ergonomic controls,

optimal sightlines and a rear-view camera. A 17.8 cm (7 in) colour display provides real-time machine performance data to help the operator maximise productivity.

The FT300 also accommodates an optional 13,607.8 kg (30,000 lb) rear-mounted winch.

Excavators The Cat 323F L excavator was specially designed with reinforced structures and a massive counterweight to take on the most severe applications. The upper and lower frame and track roller frames are designed for long-term strength and durability. The Cat 323F is also fuel efficient. Dozers The Cat D6N is a medium-size dozer that can be ordered with the Forestry Protection Package, which includes extra guarding and reinforcement to withstand the rigors of work in a harvesting environment.

The durable powershift transmission gives operators five speed ranges to match machine performance to the application. An auto-shift feature allows selecting forward/reverse speed combinations to simplify directional changes, and an autokickdown feature automatically downshifts the transmission when heavy loads demand.

The differential steering system allows the operator to move full blade loads through turns with power to both tracks, and also allows easy straight-line travel when working across slopes, simply by moving the tiller to attain the precise speed differential between the tracks.

Undercarriage configurations for the D6N include the XL (extra long) version that places more track on ground for optimum balance when grading, and the Low Ground Pressure (LGP) version that improves flotation in soft underfoot conditions.

The CS54B also features the industry-proven Cat pod-style vibratory system, which contains a proprietary sealed eccentric weight system that uses steel shot rather than swinging steel counterweights. The steel shot simply rearranges its position without any of the slamming, banging and jamming that causes hydraulic contamination in systems from other manufacturers. Eliminating contamination in this way provides high reliability and contributes to the 3 year/3,000 hour vibratory system oil change interval.

Motor Graders From building to maintaining roads, the Cat 140M3 Motor Grader is designed to get more work done in less time. Durability, operator comfort and ease of service help to maximise return on investment.

The 140M3 is equipped with the Cat C9.3 ACERT engine. The ECO mode can help save fuel by reducing engine speed. The average fuel savings is up to 10%, depending on the application.

Two electronic joysticks reduce arm movement by 78% to lessen operator fatigue and enhance productivity. After graduating high school, Tigercat customer, Michael Bedgood, had a football and track scholarship. At the time, his father Gary owned four logging crews and was contracting to forest management company, RoyOMartin. When the logging market started to decline, Michael let his football coach know that he needed to go to the woods to help his dad and the coach suspected that Michael wouldn’t be back on the fi eld. So while the city boys on Michael’s team got odd jobs in the summer, Michael was toiling in the woods behind a shear with his father. “It quickly made football practice seem like a breeze,” claims Michael. He took over his father’s logging crew entirely in 2000. Now known as Bedgood Logging, Michael is working just outside of Shreveport, Louisiana and owns three allTigercat crews.

the books, runs parts and does all the administrative work.

Michael uses the same philosophy managing his logging crews as he does with coaching – it’s all about teamwork. “One bad apple can spoil the bunch,” says Michael. “Everyone needs to work together and fl ow together.” He tries to keep a core set of guys that get along and work well together.

All it takes is one guy to mess the whole operation up.

In his younger days, patience

was at a premium and Michael was easily angered when issues came up. He had a tendency to push the man out of the way and do the job himself rather than discuss the situation calmly, discover what went wrong and find a solution.

His dad told him, “Son, it’s going to be hard to run all of it yourself one day. You might want to learn how to calm down and learn to work together.”

Football philosophy At 48-years-old, Michael still loves football. He has two boys (sixteen and ten) that play the game and currently coaches a youth football team. Michael’s wife, Kerri is the glue that keeps the whole operation together. She manages

OPERATION FOCUS - TIGERCAT than ideal situations with his own crew. Turnover is low and he acknowledges that he is lucky – the crew clicks and flows together very well.

The team On Michael’s clear fell job in Jamestown he has two 234 loaders, a 630B skidder, a 630C skidder, a 724G drive-to-tree-feller buncher equipped with the 5600 bunching saw and a spare 630B. The foreman, Jason Waters has been operating Tigercat equipment for twenty years. “We run some older machines but they sure are dependable. My whole crew loves Tigercat,” says Jason.

Michael’s second crew in Hall Summit uses a 720G feller buncher with a 5500 saw, a 630D skidder and a 240B loader. Michael actually started up his third crew the same day BTB visited on October 2. This is a thinning operation in Saline where he has a 718E drive to tree feller buncher with a 5500 saw that has 13,000 hours on it, two loaders, a 230B and 234, and two 630D skidders.

The 234 loaders have electronic boom control, which Michael was not used to at first.

“I am old school and like the pilot control, but after an hour with the electronic control you realize how much faster it is and you don’t have any hydraulic hoses to worry about.”

The field Michael’s clear fell crew is harvesting 28-year-old pine that average 16 to 24 inches (405-610 mm) in diameter. His second and third crews are thinning twelve to

thirteen-year-old pine that average 10 to 12 inches (255-305 mm) in diameter. Michael hasn’t worked a hardwood tract in over two years and he favours the pine thinning tracts. “However, everything does work harder on thinning jobs. You are dealing with smaller trees and longer skidding distances. That’s why I need Tigercat,” he explains.

Michael is happy to work in the sandy areas of northwest Louisiana as the crews can operate almost every day of the year with hardly anything shutting them down. The sandy soil allows the rain to drain quickly compared to the clay rich soils in other parts of the state.

However, Louisiana does get its fair share of rain. When driving to the fi rst job site Michael shared his recent memories of the Red River fl ooding that occurred the previous spring. The Red River reached its highest levels in 70 years, leaving hundreds of homes under water throughout Louisiana. On its way to the Mississippi River, the Red fl ows past Shreveport and the runoff from fl ooding in Texas and Oklahoma at that time all funneled into one big stream, causing big problems for residents. “There were alligators in people’s yards,” exclaims Michael.

The goal Bedgood Logging runs a day shift, five days per week from daylight until 5:00 pm. The clear fell job will average about eighteen loads per day and the larger thinning job will average sixteen loads per day. The new threemachine thinning job is aiming for ten loads per day and everything over that is a bonus.

You have to have volume now, so it is unfortunate but there is no time to train anyone new. You need to get the volume when you can until the mill puts you on quota.”

With his two existing jobs Michael will try to average about 175 loads per week with an average of 28 tons per load. Therefore, a good year will total over 245,000 which will increase now that he has started his third thinning crew. Bedgood hauls to about ten different mills around the southern US and the new thinning job is the product of a supply agreement with the International Paper Mansfield Mill.

“You used to be able to have a machine go down for a day or two but now it will really cost you.”

“Good mechanics are hard to come by but they sure do have a good one. He is worth his weight in gold,” claims Michael.

Jason Waters, the crew foreman agrees, “Patrick- Miller is first class.” Michael Bedgood plans to keep running his favorite equipment, working with the best dealership in the area and growing his crew slow and steady, so the whole team can retire together.

We filmed this cutter working on a second thinning job where the stems are 6 inches or so average, many less.

This feller buncher is very impressive. The owner has been pleased with fuel consumption and the speed and power of this feller buncher is more than adequate in his thinning and logging operations. The operators are also making positive comments about the cab interior which has recently been much improved. A Peterson 5710C horizontal grinder feeds ground wood pallets into a Terra-Select S6-E star screen. The three fraction Terra Select S6-E sorts the ground material into fines, accepts and overs.

Both machines are ideal for processing mulch, compost, or other organic material.

This Peterson 6700B horizontal grinder is equipped with our new Mid-Speed C&D package, and is doing primary grind in surplus railroad ties. The second grinder (a Peterson 4710B) is processing the material to meet the product spec which is being used for energy production.

This Peterson 5710C horizontal grinder is grinding pallets for mulch production in Indiana. The machine uses a cross belt magnet to pull the nails from the material (watch for a follow-up video on this process soon!)

The Mid-Speed C&D package is designed for highly contaminated material and features several new innovations that have not been seen on high-speed horizontal grinders before. This operation is seeing consistent 300+ tons per hour of production in this material.

The 5710C is Peterson’s latest generation of high production track grinders. Powered by the Caterpillar C27 or C32 engine at 1050 horsepower, this grinder provides the highest power to weight ratio of any Peterson grinder. At approximately 83,000 pounds (37650 kg) the 5710C was designed for operations requiring high production and frequent moves between jobs.

Doppstadt Expo 2015 - a Bird’s-eye View

50 years of Doppstadt: More than 5,000 guests from the environmental and recycling sector experienced two unforgettable days: on 24 and 25 June 2015.

Environmental technology company Doppstadt staged what was arguably the largest European trade show of 2015 in this field on its 220,000 sq.-metre works site (Saxony-Anhalt). On show were over one hundred machines for the shredding, sorting and treatment of waste and biomass. What was unique thereby

was that more than half of the machines could be seen in action. In two-hour live demonstrations, the guests saw how coarse shredders, screening machines and exact hackers shredded tree trunks into sawdust, separated waste from recyclables and sorted pebbles from sand heaps. In doing so, Doppstadt demonstrated its problem-solving skills through combined processes: material collected by machines was initially shredded, then separated into its various components by means of separation processes such as screening, washing or air separation.

This dryer will accomplish the equivalent production of two dryers, reducing labor costs by one-half. At the same time it will reduce thermal energy consumption by 10%, and exhaust fugitive emissions by 15%.

This mill is located in Ireland.

The dryer was erected off-line, and once complete it was towed into place and connected to all services under a projected expedited schedule. This allowed Martco the advantage of choosing the optimum time to disrupt its production schedule to install the additional capacity, and allowed the plant to utilize the existing building structure to house the new dryer.
