In the last year alone, Forest Holme has seen a 49% increase in the number of individuals referred to the Specialist Community Palliative Care Team to be cared for in their own homes across Poole, Wimborne and the Isle of Purbeck. We have had an increase of 22% in the number of patients admitted to our inpatient ward whilst our outpatient activity has increased sharply by 57% on the previous year. The Charity is very proud to support the excellent work undertaken by all of the teams at the Hospice, but we really do need your help to achieve this.

In May our lead Consultant in Palliative Medicine, Dr Saskie Dorman, received ‘Employee of the Year’ from Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. We are thrilled that Saskie’s passion, commitment, kindness, teamwork and drive for excellence in the provision of Palliative and End of Life Care was recognised. Congratulations and well deserved Saskie!

IN MEMORY OF LIZ By Shane Powell (Husband of Liz) Liz and I met, like so many couples, at work. At the time we were both mental health nurses working in different clinical teams but sharing the same building. A relationship and romance developed between us and we became an ‘item’, with much approval from our colleagues. After time I asked Liz to move in with me and, of course, it’s not until you live with somebody that you find out what they’re like. I found out fairly quickly that she

liked Poirot, Murder She Wrote, Columbo and clutter. Lots and lots of clutter. I proposed to her about 6 months after she moved in, in Monet’s garden, Giverny. However, Liz was not aware that the week before we went to France I met with her parents and asked her father for Liz’s hand in marriage, and she duly accepted my proposal next to the lillies in France. So, we began to plan our wedding:

Liz wanted the Swanage Railway involved, somehow, (we both enjoyed our many steam-train trips from Corfe Castle to Swanage and back with our Labrador, sandwiches and a flask of tea), and I suggested that we should also make it a vintage style wedding: 1940s dress, steam train, tea and cake, vintage bus etc. However, unbeknown to us, Liz’s body had other plans. She developed skin cancer twice and although this was very swiftly dealt with, in June 2015 a diagnosis of right-lymph node cancer was confirmed and this was quickly followed by the news that it had spread to her spine and pelvis. Surgery was ruled out as the tumour in her lymph-node was too large and had spread down her arm. Intensive radiotherapy was ineffective, IV chemotherapy was commenced along with a vast amount oral medication to manage symptoms and pain. By late summer 2015 Liz was routinely taking about 30 tablets per day. The lymph-node tumour continued to grow until it became, what we learned, is termed a ‘fungating lesion’: this is when the raw cancer breaks through the skin and continues growing. When you live with someone you can get to know them pretty well.

And you really get to know them when the adversity mounts up. So what did I learn about Liz? I already knew that she was strong – very strong – and I knew that she was tough. I saw, in her, a human who had to face the most absurd and appalling situations time and time again with dignity, humour, grace, immense courage, always a smile and, usually, a cup of tea. Throughout 2016 the cancer

continued advancing, treatment continued and Liz and I, and her family and friends, did everything we could to prevent what was gradually appearing to be inevitable.

lives but the pain reminds us of how much that person mattered to us, and how much they still mean to us. We cannot hope to love without loss but we can, given time, hope that the cherished memories of our loved one can find their rightful place when the turmoil of their departure has subsided.

Liz died on the morning of February the 16th, 2017.

From our house, I can see the trees in the cemetery where Liz is buried. I have lifted her favourite wildflowers from our garden and planted them on her grave.

It has been immensely painful to have written this, but it is a pain that I made a choice to have a long time ago. If I could not have changed the destination I would still have taken this journey with Liz, with all of the love, laughter and tears, the hurt and the loss. I donâ€™t believe that we have to get over a loss of this kind. We can still continue to live meaningful

EVENT NEWS TIE A YELLOW RIBBON Our Tie a Yellow Ribbon event raised a total of £2,245 for Forest Holme. This is an extraordinary amount and we are absolutely thrilled - thank you so much for your ongoing support. It was wonderful to see so many of you and your donations will enable us to continue providing specialist care to local people living with a life limiting illness. A special thanks must go to our amazing volunteers. Without you, this day would not be possible.

WEAR YELLOW DAY Over 1,000 local children and several local businesses took part in our Wear Yellow Day making it our biggest ever awareness event. Palliative Care Nurse Andi, who spoke to the pupils at Hamworthy Park Junior School, said “When you don’t know what a hospice is, it is easy to worry or be frightened about visiting someone. We feel it is important to show children that Forest Holme is a safe, friendly and supportive space.” 10 10

AFTERNOON TEA In June, our Afternoon Tea at the Queen’s Hotel was attended by 100 supporters. The sun shone, sandwiches and scones were devoured, faces and nails were painted and raffle prizes were won. The event raised £1,032.84 towards our life-enhancing work at Forest Holme and we'd like to thank everyone who supported the event to make it a success.

WING WALK Congratulations to Lee Butler, Alice Bowerbank, Ralph Moody, Alice Chase and Alan Cavendish for completing a Charity Wing Walk in support of Forest Holme. Once they were strapped in to the 5 point harness, they took off for a 10 minute flight experience that included zooms and climbs at speeds up to 130mph. The team raised a combined total of £8,500! Thank you so much.

FUNDRAISING IN THE COMMUNITY HAMWORTHY PARK JUNIORS Hamworthy Park Juniors’ went all out for their Wear Yellow day by planting hundreds of sunflowers at their school and running their own fundraising stalls to raise money for the hospice. The total raised was an incredible £662.

LENA’S LOOSE CHANGE Well done to 13 year old Lena for raising £95.19 by collecting her loose change. This generous donation will help us to continue being there for local families in need of our care.

BRITISH INSTITUTE OF EMBALMERS Thank you to the British Institute of Embalmers for raising £500 for Forest Holme at their annual Ladies Night in March 2017.

ELLIS JONES SOLICITORS Huge thanks to Ellis Jones Solicitors for hosting a Royal Ascot Ladies Lunch at Lake Yard. The tote betting table raised an impressive ÂŁ460.50 for our charity which will enable us to fund over 23 hours of specialist nursing care.

THOR LASER PROBE Thank you to Leslie-May and her daughter Andrea who raised ÂŁ210 by hosting a summer BBQ. This money will enable our Lymphoedema team to purchase a new probe for their Thor Laser. The Thor Laser uses LED light therapy to treat large areas of fluid retention in the body. 15 15

Huge thanks to Charlie Ling for raising £352 by hosting an afternoon tea in memory of her Dad John. In June, Amberwood Care Home in Ferndown embarked on a 'Beatles' themed sponsored walk in support of Forest Holme Hospice. Students at Poole High School have been busy fundraising in support of our work. J19 raised £151 through a sweet raffle and T17 raised £72 by selling baked goods. Entrepreneurs in the making! 16

The walk began at Baiter Park in Poole and followed a scenic route along Poole Quay.

LONDON TO BRIGHTON Congratulations to Alan Martin who completed the London to Brighton walk in a time of 24 hours and 17 minutes. Alan said “It was certainly the hardest thing I've ever done and my legs are still recovering now, but it was an amazing experience - just probably one I won't manage again!” Alan raised an incredible £741 for our work.

100 MILES FOR MUM Anne-Marie completed a 30 day challenge to walk 100 miles in memory of her mum, Lorraine Kruger. Anne-Marie said “We met many members of the public along the way who took an interest in what I was doing and the reasons behind it. Many of them had personal experiences of Forest Holme and they all said how fantastic Forest Holme is and how the staff are amazing.”

TROLLEY DASH Congratulations to Marie Grainger, winner of the Sainsbury’s Trolley Dash raffle who went home with £300 worth of groceries. We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who purchased a prize draw ticket helping us to raise £2,000 for our charity.

NATIONWIDE Thank you so much to the customers at Nationwide in Wimborne for using their tokens to vote for Forest Holme Hospice. The Building Society has generously converted your tokens into a £1,200 donation to help local people living with life limiting and terminal illnesses.

100TH BIRTHDAY A special thank you goes to a wonderful lady who recently celebrated her 100th Birthday. Nin Fisher raised £270 for Forest Holme by requesting donations to our charity in lieu of birthday presents.

WELL DONE ZACH In May we had the pleasure of giving a talk to students of Poole High about the work of the Hospice. We also presented a certificate to a very special pupil Zach Redman, who kindly donated over £100 which he raised through the £10 to £100 challenge. 18

VOTE FOR US IN TESCO’S Money spent on 5p carrier bags at Tesco’s will soon be donated to local community projects. From now until Thursday 31st August, customers can choose how much each project gets – £ 4,000, £2,000 or £1,000. Please request blue tokens to vote for Forest Holme’s project at your local Tesco store every time you shop.

ULTRA MARATHON FOR GRANT This November, Grant Vernon is taking on a 135 mile Ultra Marathon in Mid Wales in support of Forest Holme. VILLAGE FETE Huge thanks to the organisers of the Worth Matravers Village Fete for donating £2,000 towards the life enhancing work at Forest Holme Hospice.

WE URGENTLY NEED YOUR SUPPORT Forest Holme Hospice Charity works in partnership with Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust to fund specialist palliative care services for patients with lifelimiting illnesses, under the care of Forest Holme. Forest Holme Hospice Charity needs to raise £750,000 this year to help provide life enhancing care and support to patients and their families at the most difficult of times. During this period of economic and political uncertainty the Charity’s income has been negatively impacted and at a time when there is significantly increased demand on the Hospice’s services.

After only three months, we are £40,000 down against where we should be and we really need the support of the local community more than ever before to help us. People often assume that because Forest Holme is an NHS hospice, it is fully funded however; this is simply not the case. Every donation, however big or small, will make a huge difference to families across East Dorset and we’d like to thank the local community for their vital support to date.”

Jeff Knight passed away at Forest Holme on the 24th October 2014 aged just 43. Jeff's sister Anne said "Jeff stayed in Forest Holme for a short while for respite care and to regulate his pain relief during his final days. The staff were great and the ‘home from home’ atmosphere was just what he needed. There were no rigid rules on visiting which was great as we all packed ourselves into his room. He laughed and joked to the end and the staff laughed and joked with him." 22 22

INCA TRAIL On Saturday April 8, Stephanie embarked on the Inca Trail Trek to Machu Picchu in Peru. Trekking on Inca-paved paths and steps, the route took her up through lush cloudforest to the demanding Dead Woman’s Pass (4200m). The steep paths and the altitude added to the challenge but Stephanie successfully completed the trek and raised an incredible £3,236 in the process!

ICELANDIC LAVA TREK Charity Trustee Peter Moody and his two sons, Rob and Dan, recently completed the Icelandic Lava Trek in support of our work. The adventurous trio trekked for 5 days through a remote and wild environment. Thank you so much for raising an astonishing £4,192 for Forest Holme Hospice. 23

INVESTMENT IN SPECIALIST NURSING The National Council for Palliative Care found that the care of dying patients could be put at risk due to the growing difficulty in recruiting nurses into the field. The survey, commissioned by Public Health England, revealed that 44% of specialist palliative care nurses were over the age of 50 in 2013. It raises concerns that an ageing/retiring palliative care nursing workforce could in the future have a damaging impact on the care that people with advanced illnesses receive and recruitment of new nurses should be given planning priority. To address this issue, Forest Holme Hospice Charity has funded two Specialist Development Nurses. The roles are rotational posts that see a nurse spend six months within the community 24 24

nursing team, three months on the hospice ward and three months within end of life care in other areas of Poole hospital. The aim of this post is to invest in developing specialist nursing knowledge and increase the staffing resources we can provide in the local area. The first Specialist Development Nurse was Emma Gravestock. We spoke to her about her first few months in the new role; What did you learn whilst working on the inpatient ward at Forest Holme? â€œI have been able to improve my confidence in communicating in

all areas of palliative care, symptom management and complex conversations at the end of life.”

What did you enjoy most about working on the ward? “Being part of a close team, who provide gold star service to the patients and also their carers. Forest Holme is a true asset where I developed my skills and knowledge.”

We are delighted to announce that following Emma’s experience as a Specialist Development Nurse, she has now joined the Hospital Palliative Care team on a permeant contract. Congratulations to Emma for this achievement.

What did you experience whilst working with the Hospital Palliative Care Team? “I have provided advice and support to patients, carers and staff across the Trust on progressive disease management, pain and symptom control and end of life care issues. I now have experience of facilitating urgent decision making relating to achieve patient’s choice of place of care or death. And I have provided education and support to staff caring for 25

FAREWELL ANITA In August, we said a very fond farewell to Anita who retires after 32 years with the Lymphoedema team based at Forest Holme. Staff like Anita don’t come around very often and she will be sadly missed by staff and patients alike. We wish her a relaxing and enjoyable retirement and hope that she will be signing up as a fundraising volunteer very soon!

RECYCLING CARDS Thank you for recycling your birthday and celebration cards with our charity. Your unwanted cards have been transformed in to beautiful handmade designs by hospice cleaner Jackie. Jackie sold 400 cards over the past 12 months, generating £400 for our charity. 26

POOLE GOES VINTAGE Thank you to all those who joined us for Poole Goes Vintage on the Quay. Event organiser, Karl Stokes said; â€œThe fashion shows that were organised and hosted by Natalie from The Secret Wardrobe provided a huge attraction to our thousands of visitors. Even more poignant was the celebration of Lorraine Rowan, as Memphis Belle she had performed at previous Quay events and spent her last week being cared for by the wonderful hospice staff, I would be delighted if Forest Holme would partner the 2018 showâ€? A GARDEN FOR ROGER Each year, Judith Hooper opens her garden to raise funds for Forest Holme in memory of her partner Roger. In 2014, Roger was diagnosed with a large aggressive brain tumour following an unexpected fit.

He found it difficult to talk or express himself, but suddenly one day he said ‘I love you’ and ‘I want to go home’.

Judith said “Roger was an amazing man. He was fit, enjoyed walking and cycling, and was full of life. He was such fun to be with and was my loving Partner. We laughed from the moment we met on Brittany Ferries, to the loving smile he gave me just before he died.

Forest Holme arranged this for us and he spent his last 2 weeks where he wanted to be, loved and cared for by everyone with such tenderness. He died peacefully on New Year’s Eve 2014.

He received 8 weeks of care as an inpatient at Forest Holme. We were both cared for with such love and support. Although Roger was mostly unable to speak, he was still able to sing. Each morning, one of the nurses at Forest Holme would sing a different song with him which meant so much to us. 30 30

I shall continue to open the garden to raise funds for Forest Holme each year to help in some small way to enable others to have the same warm, supportive, caring and loving environment.”

HOSPICE GARDEN Volunteer gardeners, David, Marilyn and Petula are doing a sterling job with the hospice garden. Since clearing out the pond, the waterlily has really grown and the alpine plants they put in the gravel borders this year are showing lovely colours, as are the colourful heads of the passion flowers. Thank you for your hard work and dedication.

VOLUNTEER NEWS What would we do without our wonderful volunteers? This summer, our dedicated team of volunteers have been manning fundraising stalls across Dorset, helping out in the fundraising office, working within our shop, hand making Forest Holme flags, managing our collection tins, administrating our Gift Aid claims and assisting with our recycling scheme. LONDON MARATHON Congratulations to Hayley Adkin, Laura Rosa and Darryl Corbin-Jones for completing the mighty London Marathon in support of our work. If you are lucky enough to get a place for next years event, please consider fundraising for our charity.

INTERNATIONAL NURSES DAY In May we celebrated International Nurses Day at Forest Holme. The Dorset Cancer Centre Family Support Team would like to invite you to a Coffee Morning (with cake) Dorset Cancer Centre Counselling Support Team are holding their next Coffee Morning on Thursday 21st September at St Mary's Longfleet Church Hall. If you have been diagnosed with cancer and would benefit from talking to people, who are in a similar position over some tea and cake, then you will be made very welcome to all of our coffee mornings. DORSET INDIAN MELA - Saturday 26th August 2017 Dorset’s popular Indian food festival is set to entertain on Saturday 26th August in Poole Park. Admission is £2 per person and the event will raise money for Forest Holme Hospice Charity. The event runs from 12pm to 6pm and promises fun for all the family in a celebration of Indian culture, cuisine and heritage. 38

WIMBORNE FASHION SHOW - Friday 15th September Organised by Wimborne Rotary Club, all proceeds will go to Forest Holme Hospice and Dorset Air Ambulance. Tickets are £15 per person and are available from the fundraising office. Your ticket includes a glass of wine and a fashion show by local boutiques Beach and Body, Fab Frocks and Veronica Morgan.

BARN DANCE Friday 29th September Howdy! Dig out your checked shirt, dust off your dancing shoes and join us for a ploughman’s supper and dancing at the Hamworthy Club, Canford Magna.
