NEW £1 COINS The new £1 coins were introduced into circulation on 28th March. Before the ‘round pound’ is no longer accepted, please consider donating your old pound coins to Forest Holme. Each pound donated could provide a comforting cup of tea and a biscuit to patients and their families visiting our hospice. 4
KATIE’S EXPERIENCE Katie’s Grandad sadly passed away in March 2014 after a short stay at Forest Holme. Katie said “Whilst he was in Forest Holme it was his birthday, which we knew would be his last. The staff went above and beyond to clear the lounge area and wheel my Grandad’s bed in where we surprised him with balloons, food, drink and all his family and friends. He absolutely loved it and it brought comfort to us knowing his last birthday was celebrated. It was also my Nan’s birthday whilst he was at Forest Holme and the nurses picked some flowers out of the garden for him to give to her, a very simple but special memory that she will treasure forever. They (Forest Holme team) were our sunshine on the darkest days. When they felt the time was right they cracked a little joke to make us all smile a little sometimes that’s all you need. They were a shoulder to cry on or warm arms to hug when everything was falling apart. They really did help us all get through the worst hours of our lives and for all the reasons above, I will forever be grateful.” 5

GUNG-HO! FOR ROGER On Saturday August 26, Karen Hesketh will be taking part in the Gung-Ho! obstacle race at Upton Country Park in memory of her husband, Roger. EVENT NEWS FIRE WALK Congratulations to the 51 brave ‘soles’ who took part in our Charity Fire Walk at Cobham Sports & Social Club on March 16. The courageous group hotfooted it across embers measuring 600°C, which is six times the temperature of boiling kettle water. We would like to say a huge thank you to the participants and spectators for raising a combined total of £9,490 for adults living with terminal illnesses in Poole, Wimborne and the Isle of Purbeck. You are amazing!
BINGO Our popular Bingo Night raised £1,800 for our work. Thank to all those who attended and a special thanks to Hays Travel Broadstone for their wonderful support of this event. 10 10
SPRING LUNCH Thank you to Tim Gurney from PCCT for organising a wonderful Spring Lunch at The Orchid Hotel in support of Forest Holme. The event was attended by over 90 people who enjoyed a three course meal and a very sociable afternoon.
Small change, Big difference QUIZ NIGHT Our increasingly popular quiz night raised a total of £1,568 for Forest Holme on Friday 10th March. The event total was boosted by £160 thanks to Bespoke 4 Business who donated a signed AFC Bournemouth programme which we auctioned during the event. Thank you so much to all those who attended and volunteered their time.

FUNDRAISNG IN THE COMMUNITY BOURNEMOUTH RFC Bournemouth Rugby Football Club U15's raised an impressive £490 for Forest Holme at their recent charity game at Chapel Gate.
ROUND TABLE Thank you to Round Table International (Wimborne 548) for their generous donation of £2,000 which enabled us to fund a new fridge freezer, blinds and a television for the hospice.
AMBERWOOD HOUSE During the Easter weekend, Amberwood House in Ferndown organised a bonnet making competition in support of our work. The winners were chosen by fundraising volunteer, Vicky (pictured right).

10 DAY CHARITY TREK In April, Stephanie Shimmons set off on a 10 day charity trek from Cusco to Machu Picchu in Peru. Stephanie has self-funded her trip which means that every penny raised will help local people living with a life limiting illness. We wish her the best of luck for this epic adventure.
FERNDOWN GOLF CLUB We were very fortunate to have been chosen as one of Helen Taylor's charities during her role as Ladies Captain at Ferndown Golf Club in 2016/17. A tremendous total of ÂŁ1,600 was raised to go towards the work of Forest Holme and a further ÂŁ2,000 was received from the Peter Alliss Invitational Charity Golf Day last September.
HASKINS GARDEN CENTRE Our charity partnership with Haskins Garden Centre in Ferndown has now come to an end after two fantastic years. The support shown by Haskins has been very valuable to us and the money raised has helped patients and their families during the most difficult time of their lives. We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the staff and customers for their wonderful contribution to local hospice care. 13
KNITTED GIFTS Talented Helen Wood has been hard at work knitting Easter novelty items to raise funds for Forest Holme.
LORD NELSON The Lord Nelson has done it again! On Saturday evening they held another hugely successful fundraiser in support of our work. The Anniversary of Rock takes place every February in memory of a much loved lady, Donna Turner. This year’s event included live performances from many local bands and raised an incredible £3,612.

AUSTRALIAN MARATHON Fundraising for Forest Holme has reached the other side of the world! Amy Loxton and a group of friends completed a marathon in Australia in memory of Amy’s Cousin, Mandie Burkmar who received end-of-life care at the hospice in 2011.

GOVERNMENT ABANDONS ITS PROBATE FEE HIKE In a pre-election U-turn the government has mercifully abandoned plans to raise the cost of probating an estate. That’s very welcome news – and hopefully a permanent decision because there are fears that this planned stealth tax could resurface again after the election. At present the government charges a fixed fee for probate: £155 if a solicitor completes the process – or £215 if it is completed by friends or relatives. From May 2017 the government had planned to replace these fixed fees with a sliding scale based on how much an estate was worth.

This aims to get people more active in planning for dying and death and helping support those who may need it in times of grief and bereavement, be they friends, family or in your wider community.

COFFEE MORNING FOR PATIENTS Your fundraising efforts helped to support the first Coffee Morning for patients of Dorset Cancer Centre. Organised by our counselling team, the morning allowed people to come together in a very social and safe environment in order to meet other people in a similar position. The counselling team recognise that a cancer diagnosis can leave patients feeling isolated, anxious and alone, even when amongst family and friends. Because of this they thought that people might like to meet and chat to other patients and people who just ‘get it’ over a cup of coffee and slice of cake. We were thrilled to have 34 people at the first coffee morning and we'd like to say a big thank you to our volunteers who helped the morning run so smoothly.
99% WOULD RECOMMEND US The results a recent Friends and Family test were overwhelmingly positive with 99% of respondents saying that they would recommend the Specialist Palliative Care service at Forest Holme to friends or family should they have need to. 19

JACKIE’S FOUR LEGGED VISITORS Hospice care places a high value on dignity, respect, and the wishes of the person who is ill, and aims to look after all their needs. Stephanie Galpin shares her Mother-in-law’s experience of Forest Holme; “The staff at Forest Holme treated us like family. They took the time to get to know Jackie as a person, not just a patient. We were very surprised when we were told we could bring our dogs in to see her. Her face brightened up each time we brought one of the dogs in to visit.”

NATIONWIDE GRANT We are delighted to announce that we have been awarded a ÂŁ4,000 grant from Nationwide Building Society to fund 50 counselling sessions for local people following their diagnosis of cancer, and 50 bereavement support sessions for families who are
coming to terms with life without their loved ones. Thank you for making sure we can be there for patients and their families at the most difficult time of their lives.
EASTER EGG HUNT Natalie raised ÂŁ60 for Forest Holme by hosting a BBQ and Easter Egg hunt for her friends and family over the bank holiday weekend.

IN MEMORY OF BOB HANN In February 2016 Bob received the news that he had terminal kidney cancer. Pauline from the Forest Holme community team began visiting Bob and his family at home to make sure they were okay and to explain what Forest Holme could do to help with pain relief. Bob stayed at Forest Holme during the week for symptom management and returned home at the weekends to spend quality time with his grandchildren.

WAREHAM RIVER CRUISE - Thursday 31st August Join us for our ever-popular Wareham River Cruise on Thursday 31st August. Tickets are £26 per person and include entertainment, fish and chips and a chance to see the fireworks at Poole Quay.
BARN DANCE - Friday 29th September Howdy! Dig out your checked shirt, dust off your dancing shoes and join us for a ploughman’s supper and dancing at the Hamworthy Club, Canford Magna.
