Welcome to our first newsletter of 2018, New Year usually signals a fresh start with new ambitions, challenges and to-do lists for the year ahead. As you will read in this edition we have plenty of fundraising activities and events such as our fire and ice walk, runs, parachute jumps, wing walk and overseas challenges to help you achieve something you have maybe always wanted to do, whilst supporting the work of the Hospice.

I never fail to be impressed, and sometimes horrified, by the physical and mental lengths our fundraisers will go to, to support the life enhancing work of Forest Holme Hospice. We think you are all brilliant!

It’s amazing what people can achieve together. I’m particularly taken by the way in which our supporters, volunteers and staff share the same passion and determination to deliver the best possible care for those living in East Dorset with advanced cancer or a life-limiting disease.

We know that the challenges of caring for people at home, in care/ nursing homes, in the Hospice itself or in Poole Hospital will only continue to increase in the future, but with the will that is shown by people involved with Forest Holme across the board, then the Hospice will continue to strive to meet the increasing need for its services with your support.

POOLE HIGH SANDWALK On Thursday 20th July, 991 students and 63 staff completed the first ever Poole High School Sandwalk - a sponsored walk from Shore Road to Bournemouth Pier and back in beautiful sunshine.

LISA’S LOCKS A motivational coach from Bournemouth has raised a staggering £5,000 for Forest Holme after shaving her head.

Lisa Pierson lost her trademark red streaked hair she’d had for more than 20 years to raise money for local hospice care.

In the first 24 hours of setting up her JustGiving page, Lisa raised more than £1,500 with donations from all over the world including Germany, Switzerland, Canada, America, Australia and Japan. The total now stands at £5,135.

ROGER HESKETH 30/8/1947 – 29/11/2016

Roger loved life and lived it to the full. Before being diagnosed with cancer he had already battled with another health issue for over twenty years, but he never let it interfere with his enjoyment of life.

He had endured many operations and much treatment with resultant pain and mobility problems which greatly impacted on his quality of life. However he looked upon these as ‘challenges’ rather than ‘problems’ and remained extremely optimistic and good humoured.

Roger spent three weeks at Forest Holme during July 2016 – the cancer was obstructing his bowel – and this was life threatening. But he wasn’t ready to die yet so he agreed to surgery to give him a stoma. During his recovery his goal was to enjoy a pasty at Studland Beach. He achieved this wish!

We felt supported, comforted and assured of help and advice whenever needed. During his final days I was helped to look after Roger at home - where he wanted to be surrounded by his nearest and dearest.

Whilst Roger was at Forest Holme recovering from his stoma operation I made him a ‘This is your Life’ book of photographs. This was done with the intention of allowing him to focus and reflect upon the rich life that he had led.

We spent many happy moments reminiscing, reliving happy times and reflecting on the impact that he had made on the lives of so many others. This book remains a very great comfort to me now.

We would not have managed those final months alone. Forest Holme was there for us throughout.

THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS During 2017, our volunteers gave over 6,500 hours of their time to support the work of Forest Holme.

Our volunteers help us to ensure, among many things, the Secret Wardrobe provides a magical shopping experience, our garden looks fabulous throughout the year, our monthly pop in group has a listening ear, our fundraising events always run

smoothly and our administration work is kept up to date.

CHRISTMAS PRIZE DRAW Congratulations to our lucky raffle winners! Thank you to everyone who supported our prize draw by purchasing tickets and donating prizes. A special thanks goes to Wessex Marine for funding the ÂŁ500 top prize. The total raised was a fantastic ÂŁ5,502.

EVENT NEWS BARN DANCE Thank you to all those who attended our Barn Dance in September - we had an enjoyable evening and hope you did too! The date for the next Barn Dance is Friday 26th October 2018.

BINGO NIGHT Our November Prize Bingo event raised a fantastic £1,847. Congratulations to all of the winners.

GREAT HOSPICE HIKE Huge congratulations to all those who completed our Great Hospice Hike across the Isle of Purbeck.

The walkers battled mud, wind and rain to raise vital funds for the Hospice. The date for the next Hospice Hike is Sunday 30th September 2018.

DANCE THROUGH THE DECADES In December, 106 people attended our Christmas party night at the Hamworthy Club. The event was a great success and our guests enjoyed dancing to music from the 1950’s right through to the present day.

TREE OF REMEMBRANCE Following 3 fantastic weeks at Sainsbury's Castlepoint and The Secret Wardrobe, we are delighted to announce that our Christmas remembrance trees have raised ÂŁ4,141 for our work.

LIGHT UP A LIFE SERVICE We would like to thank all those who joined us in remembering and celebrating the lives of those who are sadly no longer with us.

CROSSWORD BOOKS Thank you to The Works in Poole for donating crossword books to the inpatient ward.

INDIAN MELA Dorset’s popular Indian food festival, the Dorset Indian Mela 2017, entertained crowds of over 3,000 in Poole Park on Saturday 26th August to raise funds and awareness of Forest Holme 711 Hospice Charity.

GARY MARTIN MEMORIAL GOLF DAY Martin Collins and Terry Doe organised a Charity Golf Day at Knighton Golf Club in memory of Gary Martin. The kind-hearted duo raised a total of ÂŁ1,200 for our work.

SANTA SLEIGH We had great fun on the Santa Sleigh with the Fire crews of Poole and Hamworthy in December.

The tour raised a total of ÂŁ1,053 which will be split equally between The Fire Fighters Charity and Forest Holme Hospice.

CHRISTMAS JUMPERS Staff at Wyatt Homes, Bespoke 4 Business and Broadview Blinds donned their favourite Christmas Jumpers to raise funds for Forest Holme.

Reindeer, penguins and Christmas baubles were the order of the day as team members wore their most colourful and festive knitwear.

COFFEE MORNING Thank you to Collette and Jocelyne for raising £365 in memory of their dear friend, Pat Melbourne during a recent coffee morning.

RAFFLE Good Vibrations Poole have continued their support of Forest Holme by hosting a Christmas Raffle in aid of our work.

Jan, Jenny and Jane raised a total of £445 by selling tickets to their weekly 'Wobblers'.

1ST GAUNTS GUIDES Thank you to the 1st Guants Guides for raising £125 at their recent fundraiser. Ellie and Lauren decided to fundraise for Forest Holme in memory of their Grandad Bill.

KIND-HEARTED SIBLINGS Olly and Niamh have been busy collecting their loose change to help families in need of our care.

The kind-hearted siblings donated a total of £20.95 which helped to purchase Christmas gifts for patients during December.

POOLE ROTARY CLUB We'd like to say a very big thank you to Poole Rotary Club for their most recent donation of £1,053 raised at their Hollywood meets the West End fancy dress dinner in October organised by Peter Brooks.

The Club's President, Georgina Brooks and members of the Club visited Forest Holme to present the cheque and a special plaque which will be displayed in the Hospice.

70TH BIRTHDAY In 2017, John Drake celebrated his 70th Birthday with a party at the Hamworthy Club and asked for donations to Forest Holme in lieu of Birthday presents.

Thank you to John’s family and friends for donating a total of £548.

AALIYAH’S TREK We visited Lytchett Minster School to present a very special pupil with a fundraising certificate.

12 year old Aaliyah raised £424 for Forest Holme by trekking up Mount Snowdon.

LADIES NIGHT Thank you to Rose Special Occasion Dress Agency for their donation of £250 which was raised at their recent ladies night.

This donation could fund nearly 24 hours of care for a patient and their family on our in-patient ward.

DARTS NIGHT Huge thanks to Creekmoor Social Club for raising £860 in memory of George Lawson at their recent charity darts night. A great night was had by all.

GROUP LUNCH The Pop-in express group raised £400 from a raffle held at their Christmas Lunch at the Sandbanks Hotel.

GALA WEEKEND Thank you to the Bournemouth & Poole Preservation Club for their donation of £200, which was raised from their Swanage Railway Gala Weekend in September.

NORTHERN SOUL NIGHT Partygoers danced the night away to a selection of Soul DJ’s at the Canford Heath Community Club in November.

The night raised an incredible £1,125 for our work.

BIG BRUNCH Thank you to all those who hosted or participated in our ‘Big Brunch’ appeal including; Jill Biles, Barclays House, Hadland Care Group and White Stuff Wimborne.

SOUP LUNCH The village of Ashmore in North Dorset host an annual soup lunch for local residents.

This year, they kindly decided to donate the proceeds to Forest Holme Hospice. Thank you to everyone involved.

CHARITY BALL Thank you to Gerry and Anne for organising a Charity Ball which raised £904.20 for the hospice. The warmhearted couple have already booked a date for their next event, the ‘Red, White & Blue charity Dance’, which is taking place on Sunday March 25th at the Hamworthy Club.

ROSSMORE ROCKETS Huge thanks to Louisa Fox and the Rossmore Rockets FC Under 13's for raising £531.50 in memory of Becky Heeks.

HARRY PAYE DAY The Pirates of Poole raised an incredible £2,500 for our work.

WORLDWIDE CHALLENGES We’ve teamed up with Discover Adventure who are specialists in organising worldwide trekking and cycling challenges.

Are you looking to push yourself out of your comfort zone or fulfil a lifetime ambition whilst raising vital funds for Forest Holme?

Our intrepid supporters have trekked the Sahara, hiked the Great Wall of China and tackled Mount Kilimanjaro, raising thousands of pounds for our work.

A Yoga Instructor to provide relaxation and natural pain relief for people undergoing cancer treatment.

The Transformation Manager for the Building on the Best programme which aims to improve end of life care in Poole Hospital.

A Therapies Technician to help patients regain some independence by ensuring that they are stable on their feet and can complete daily tasks such as washing and dressing.

A Receptionist/Ward Clerk to greet visitors with a friendly smile and sensitively liaise with distressed patients and families.

Specialist Development Nurses to provide expert care to people with advanced disease wherever and whenever they need it.

Additional Health Care Assistant hours to help enhance the quality of care overnight on the in-patient ward.

A Complementary Therapist to

provide relaxing aromatherapy, reflexology and massage for those living with the uncomfortable physical and emotional side-effects of treatment.

A Nurse on the in-patient ward to manage pain and other symptoms associated with lifelimiting illnesses. The nurse also provides psychological, social and spiritual support to the patient and their loved ones.

An Education Coordinator to facilitate the training of our staff across the hospice and hospital, along with local General Practises, care homes and residential homes, to ensure they can best support patients and their families towards the end of their life.

TO WHOM SHOULD I GRANT A POWER OF ATTORNEY? As we get older (or through accident or illness), some of us lose the ability to take important decisions about our health or finances.

Sometimes the process is gradual, sometimes much quicker.

People facing these changes can create lasting powers of attorney that name loved ones or trusted professionals to take legal decisions on their behalf when the time comes.

Just like making a will, creating a power of attorney is an important step but one that can involve a certain amount of soul-searching.

Whom should you choose to take decisions? Often older people will nominate their children – loved ones they trust implicitly. But even then it can still be a difficult decision:

Should you nominate more than one person? What if the two people you want to nominate don’t get on?

Will they truly respect your wishes or simply do what they think you want?

Also, in very rare cases, trust can be misplaced – especially where money is involved. So who can protect you?

A good solicitor who specialises in lasting powers of attorney will be well placed to advise you on the rights checks and balances to put in place to protect your finances.

Furthermore, the Court of Protection has appointed 71 Deputies across the country to help safeguard the rights of people who have lost the capacity to take decisions for themselves.

RUNNING FOR CHARITY RUN WITH YOUR HEART, NOT WITH YOUR LEGS We would like to say a huge congratulations to all those who took part in the Bournemouth Marathon Festival in support of Forest Holme.

Our dedicated running team put hundreds of hours into their training and big effort into their fundraising. We think they’re

10K FOR TINA Tina Smith ran her first 10k in tribute to her Dad Dave.

Tina said “Four years ago my lovely Dad passed away after a courageous battle with lung cancer. He was cared for by the wonderful nursing staff at Forest Holme.

This Hospice provides 24/7 end of life care as well as supporting the families of the patient. My Dad was fortunate enough to have that specialist care and for this we are truly grateful.”

MARATHON Dale Holland ran the Bournemouth Marathon in memory of his late wife, Karen Holland.

Dale said “Karen was at Forest Holme hospice a week before she passed away the staff were very kind and considerate. It is a lovely and peaceful place to be.”

KIDS KILOMETRE Congratulations to all of the children who completed the ’Kids Kilometre’ at the Bournemouth Marathon Festival including Jake Dixon (pictured left) who raised £1,005 in memory of his Daddy, Shaun.

RUN IN 2018 The Bournemouth Marathon Festival brings many distances together in one unique festival of running. The course is fast and picturesque, making it a must-do for anyone looking to set a PB.

SAHARAN CHALLENGE Nikki Smith completed 2 marathons in 2 days in the Sahara Desert in memory of her husband Richard.

“The heat took its toll on all of us reaching 45°C at some points of the day. It was an incredible experience, one that for me, will be really hard to beat!

The camaraderie was amazing, everyone had their own stories and reasons for being there and I can honestly say I came away with some incredible new friends.”

IRONMAN BARCELONA Gary Miles competed in Ironman Barcelona in support of our work.

Gary said "Forest Holme recently cared for my Auntie during the final weeks of her fight with lung cancer.

The support they give to their patients and their families at such tough times is amazing and I would like to thank them for all their work."

CANADIAN ROCKIES Congratulations to Lesly Curtis for completing a 10 day charity trek of the Canadian Rockies in aid of Forest Holme.

The steep hills and long days on rugged trails made this a demanding adventure.

Lesly said “I trained hard, but nothing could prepare me for the ground we trekked. But it was so worth it”

CONTACT DETAILS ULTRA MARATHON Grant Vernon ran the Rebellion Ultra Marathon in aid of Forest Holme.

Grant ran for 28 hours across 80 miles of uneven terrain to raise £2,215 for local families in need of our care.

The majority of the run was in perpetual darkness, rain, fog and wind. Grant was even chased by farm dogs and cows!

Completing a challenge is not about coming first or setting the best time, it is about achieving something you never thought would be possible.

THE SECRET WARDROBE The Secret Wardrobe, can be found on the first floor of The Dolphin Shopping Centre and sells a range of clothes and accessories suitable for every occasion.

GIFT AID Ever wondered why we take the tags off the clothes as you buy them?

When you donate stock into the shop or Big Yellow Storage, if you pay tax, you can gift aid your donations and we can claim a further 25% back from the government. As of this quarter, we are now claiming on 50% of your donations. This will make a massive difference to the patients in Forest Holme - thank you.

FASHION SHOW Thank you to everyone who joined us for our fashion show in October.

A special thanks goes to our volunteers, models, make up artists, Karl Stokes, Merley House and the stall holders.

The event celebrated the 5th anniversary of The Secret Wardrobe and raised funds for local people in need of hospice care.

PALLIATIVE CARE CONFERENCE We held our third annual conference in the Education Centre at Poole Hospital and welcomed over 60 health and social care professionals to our Oncology update in Palliative Care.

We were thrilled to note that 98% of the attendees rated the day either excellent or very good.

In March we are looking forward to taking part in, and exhibiting, at the APM’s Annual Supportive and Palliative Care Conference in the Bournemouth International Centre which will be focusing on working towards evidence based compassionate care.

HOSPICE CARE WEEK As part of Hospice Awareness Week in October, our team had a stand in the entrance dome of Poole Hospital to help raise the profile of Forest Holme Hospice and talk about the work they do.

The topic of hospice care week was ‘We are hospice care’ which was highlighting all the different people and elements of hospice care.

There are many different roles that help make up hospice care and we're really proud of every single person who plays their part at Forest Holme.

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD We would like to congratulate our Patron, Dame Yvonne Moores, for being awarded a Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award by the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing at their 44th Biennial Convention in Indianapolis, USA. Only five other people have ever received it in its history including Princess Anne.

Dame Yvonne is a former Chief Nursing Officer for Wales, for Scotland and for England. As the Director of Nursing for the NHS, she played a key role as advisor to the Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Health on a range of issues related to policy and improving the quality of clinical services.

Congratulations Yvonne and very well deserved!

Big Difference

Thank you to all those who have been collecting their loose change in a jam jar for Forest Holme.

Last year ÂŁ2,938 was raised through the 'Small change, Big difference' appeal and this has paid for daily newspapers for the inpatients, travel costs for our volunteer Bereavement Counsellors and even a year's supply of fish food for our pond.

Your small change really does add up and help to fund the 'small' things which help to make all the difference to our families, thank you!

TIE A YELLOW RIBBON - THURSDAY 14TH JUNE 2018 As part of National Hospice Awareness month, we invite you to “Tie a Yellow Ribbon” in memory of a loved one or friend in the courtyard garden at Forest Holme.

Visit the Hospice between the hours of 10am and 4pm on Thursday 14th June 2018 and join us for a cup of tea and a slice of cake. Please be aware that parking is very limited and we would appreciate it if alternative parking could be sought.

WEAR YELLOW DAY - FRIDAY 15TH JUNE 2018 Gather your friends, family, colleagues and school mates to take part in this year's Wear Yellow Day. Yellow is the colour of the hospice movement and we invite you to wear yellow for the day in exchange for a small donation to Forest Holme.

Why not use this opportunity to host a cake sale, coffee morning or raffle to raise even more funds for your local hospice.
