Improving the quality of end of life care is a priority which has been highlighted in several national reports. At Poole Hospital, approximately one in every four adult inpatients are in their last year of life, while nationally, half of all people who die, do so in hospital.

CARE FOR THE COMMUNITY Hospice care extends past the four walls of the building at Forest Holme. Each year, the Community Specialist Palliative Care Team cares for over 600 people in their own homes, in nursing homes and/ or care homes. There are seven community nurses based at Forest Holme who are linked to all of the GP surgeries in Poole, Wimborne, Cranborne and the Isle of Purbeck. Each specialist nurse covers a number of GP surgeries in a locality. The nurses offer expert advice to help patients manage any symptoms they may have, such as pain, sickness, shortness of breath, tiredness or poor appetite. They also offer emotional support, helping patients and their families cope with the impact of illness, treatment, fears and worries and the uncertainty of living with a life-threatening condition. 4
IN MEMORY OF JIMMY Thank you to Swanage Town & Herston Football Club and Corfe Castle FC for their recent fundraising efforts in memory of Jimmy Hollywood. Jimmy had been involved with local football for many years at youth and adult level and that included a spell in charge of the Swans first team from 2004 until 2007. Swanage FC said “He will be greatly missed by players past and present, officers of the club and our supporters who got to know him during his long and distinguished association with Swanage" Corfe Castle FC added “Although Jimmy will be best remembered for his contribution to our local neighbours and footballing friends Swanage Town and Herston, his time, dedication and effort for us at the Fortress was invaluable in moving the club forward.” The money raised in Jimmy’s memory will help to provide care for local people living with advanced cancer and other life limiting illnesses.

A look back at the Festive Season COLES MILLER SOLICITORS & SIEMENS Kind-hearted staff from Coles Miller Solicitors LLP and Siemens gave up their lunch break to bag pack at Sainsbury’s for Forest Holme. The money raised will fund bereavement support sessions for families who are coming to terms with life without their loved ones.
HASKINS GARDEN CENTRE Ferndown’s Haskins Garden Centre spread a little festive cheer by donating handmade Christmas wreaths to our charity. The wonderful decorations helped to create a homely environment at Forest Holme over the festive period. We would also like to thank the Co-op Funeral Care for donating a Christmas tree for the in-patient ward.
FIRE CREW Richard Cole and Ian Crabb from the Poole and Hamworthy Fire Crew made a donation of £240 to Forest Holme following their successful Santa Fire Sleigh tour of Waterloo Estate and Broadstone.

CHRISTMAS PARTY Our Patron Dame Yvonne Moores, was the special guest at the Amberwood House Christmas Party in December. Amberwood House are part of the Colten Care Group and have been raising funds for Forest Holme over the past 12 months. Thank you to the staff and residents for their generosity, creativity and good sense of humour.

EVENT NEWS Christmas Fayre On Tuesday December 13, we held a Christmas Fayre at the Blue Boar Pub in Poole which raised over ÂŁ500 for Forest Holme. Thank you to the many local businesses and individuals who supported this event and made it such a success!
Barn Dance In September we held our first ever Barn Dance at the Hamworthy Club. Thank you to all those who attended the event - we had a fantastic evening and hope you did too! The event raised a total of ÂŁ813.

FUNDRAISNG IN THE COMMUNITY UPTON WI’S FINAL EVENT We were delighted to collect a cheque for £500 from the ladies of the Upton Women’s Institute who have been supporting Forest Holme for the past 12 years. The Upton WI has been in existence for over a century and we were deeply saddened to learn that this will be their last event due to declining membership numbers. Their continued support has helped many local families affected by cancer and other life-limiting illnesses and we will be eternally grateful for their contributions to our charity's work.
BEAUTY RAFFLE Bella Rose Beauty Salon recently held a raffle in aid of Forest Holme in memory of Kay-lee’s Dad. The raffle was well supported by the salon's loyal and generous customers, who were more than happy to get involved to win some top prizes! 12
FIRST RUN FOR DR SASKIE Dr Saskie Dorman raised £205 by taking part in her first Park Run in support of our work. Saskie has worked as a Consultant in Palliative Medicine at Forest Holme for ten years and said; “Every day I'm inspired by the amazing people I meet - people living with serious illness, their families and friends, and staff working at the Hospice”
COFFEE & CAKE Jackie Broughton recently hosted a Coffee and Cake event in memory of her husband Tony, which raised an incredible £1,214 for Forest Holme. Along with a delicious selection of homemade cakes, there was also a raffle which helped reach the final total.

The nurse also provides psychological, social and spiritual support to the patient and their loved ones. An Education Coordinator to facilitate the training of our staff across the hospice and hospital, along with local General Practises, care homes and residential homes, to ensure they can best support patients and their families towards the end of their life. 17

HOT CHOCOLATE We are celebrating after receiving a £300 donation from the GALAXY Hot Chocolate Fund. Thank you so much to everyone who took the time to vote for us. This donation will be used to help cover the costs of running our bereavement popin group for an entire year.
SAHARA DESERT TREK After trekking 100km across the Sahara Desert in memory of her Father, Eloise Flinter is finally home. Eloise said that the challenge was the “hardest, most amazing experience” and has exceeded her ambitious fundraising target by raising £3,042 for Forest Holme. Congratulations on this fantastic achievement!

The ReTurn 7500 is designed to make the process of standing and sitting as easy as possible for both the user and carer alike. Sunflower Suite Amphibious Chapter 9050 have been making donations throughout 2016 to enable us to start a renovation project at Forest Holme. During the Autumn we began work on the ‘The Sunflower Suite’. The aim of this room is
to provide a peaceful and private space for family members to say their final goodbye to their loved ones and begin their grieving process. The project is due to be completed by the Spring 2017.

Can Your Will Withstand The Test Of Time? We don’t like talking about wills do we? We all want to do the right thing and make sure our loved ones will be financially safe and well. But we still feel a bit uncomfortable talking about it. That’s okay, it’s perfectly understandable. If you’ve already made your will then you’ve already done better than most (because people tend to put it off).
Have You Written A Letter Of Intent? Ideally, you should always write a letter of intent to back up your will. Your will tells people what you want to happen: your bequests, your preferred funeral arrangements.

DIY Wills Some people are tempted to save a few pennies by opting for a DIY will but they have their drawbacks. Letters of intent are a good example of why a DIY will may not be a good idea. Sometimes they can go wrong. A DIY will bought over the counter or downloaded from the internet is not ideal because too much is left to chance when ensuring it’s properly signed and witnessed. And without a letter of intent to back it up, a DIY can look a bit less secure compared with one drawn up by a solicitor. When it’s time to make or review your will, to do right by your loved ones, it’s important to do it right. A friendly chat with a solicitor who specialises in wills can give you the reassuring peace of mind you seek. Trevor Purdey - Full Marathon In memory of Ian Beckett Trevor experienced extreme fatigue, blisters and muscle cramp but said; “I was never going to give up, no matter how much pain I was in. A friend of mine, Ian Beckett, died of cancer and was cared for at Forest Holme during his final months. All I could think of was, this is me doing a little something to raise some money so that you can provide that same excellent service to other families” The camaraderie, crowds, the support of his family and an endless supply of jelly babies helped Trevor complete the marathon in an admirable time of 5 hours and 18 minutes. Adrianne Louise - 10k In memory of Colin Withington “My Dad fought his battle with cancer for three months and spent his final two days in the care of Forest Holme. At the hospice, he received dignified and caring treatment in his last hours in the most comfortable of surroundings. I cannot praise the Hospice and the staff enough for the support they gave our family during the time he was there, and also after he passed away.” 25

“Last November, I sadly and very unexpectedly lost my mum to Pancreatic Cancer within 5 weeks of realising she was ill. Forest Holme was important to mum, she began her work there, 20 years ago, as a counsellor. Through her work she helped so many families come to terms with their imminent loss and consequent grief. It was one of mum’s last wishes to go to Forest Holme to spend her last few days in the place that had been close to her heart and instrumental in her career. Big Difference Thank you to all those who have been collecting their loose change in a jam jar for Forest Holme. Last year ÂŁ1,823 was raised through the 'Small change, Big difference' appeal and this has paid for daily newspapers for the inpatients, travel costs for our volunteer Bereavement Counsellors and even a year's supply of fish food for our pond.
Loyal supporter, Rebecca Millington has started her own floristry business and decided to donate some of her stunning creations to Forest Holme.

QUIZ NIGHT - Friday 10th March 2017 It's that time again! Our next Quiz Night is taking place at Cobham Sports and Social Club on Friday 10th March. Tickets are just £6, which includes a chip butty, and doors open at 7pm ready to start quizzing at 7.30pm.
FIRE WALK - Thursday 16th March 2017 Venue: Cobham Sports and Social Club Everyone needs thrill and adventure, so fire up your determination and walk across hot coals for Forest Holme.
