DEAR FRIENDS
Welcome to our Summer newsletter. In the reception of Forest Holme we have a tree, a ‘What matters?’ tree. We encourage anyone to take a moment to write on one of its leaves to let people know what matters most to them. Some of the current leaves include: ‘being able to ask for help if I need it’, ‘homeless people’, ‘kindness’, ‘banter’, ‘caring and empathetic staff’, ‘being made to feel special’, ‘listening’, ‘everything matters’, ‘being loved’ and ‘being happy’. Each individual leaf is different and it’s vitally important for us to understand what matters to individuals and those closest to them – we need to ask what matters, listen to what matters and do what matters. If you were to ask yourself this same question today, what would you say? As Forest Holme Hospice Charity, what matters most to us is that everyone receives the best possible palliative and end of life care centered on what matters most to them. We were really pleased that 2 Dorset’s Integrated Care System,
as one of three sites in England, had been approached by NHS England to look at improving and evaluating personalised care towards the end of life. This will be facilitated by the Dorset End of Life Care Partnership, made up of many different organisations including ourselves, which was established to work collaboratively to achieve the National Ambitions for Palliative and End of Life Care within our local community. As you will read in the newsletter, the Charity also attended the All Party Parliamentary Group for Palliative and Hospice Care at Westminster to re-iterate our written views on how we think access to hospice and palliative can be improved for everyone. We are very aware of the growing demand on our existing services in the hospice, out in the community and in Poole Hospital and we need to ensure that we are in the best position we can be to meet the future needs of these individuals and their families. This is why your ongoing support is vital to help us achieve this together. Every hour of your time, item donated or penny given, matters. You matter to us.
And you matter to those 1,000 individuals and families who are cared for by our teams during the course of the year and for that we are truly grateful. IN MEMORY OF CHARLES WILLIAMS Charles, my husband, died very peacefully on 10th December 2017 at Forest Holme. He was a fun-loving, larger than life character. The hospice care was second to none for Charles and the family. It was a difficult time for us all but we were able to cope better because of the care, support and love which was given by the whole team. Charles was always very generous hearted, so as a family we have sold and donated his collection of cigarette cards which he collected over many years. These cards have raised ÂŁ6,926,92, which we have handed into Forest Holme, in order that in a small way, others will be able to benefit. Charles was a great supporter of the Wessex Chorus Choir, of which I am a member, and so from November 2018 our choir has chosen Forest Holme Hospice as their charity for the next two years. So please help us to spread the word through music, and come to our events thereby supporting the amazing work of this charity. Janis Williams

NEW CHARITY PATRON We would like thank Dame Yvonne Moores (right), who has retired from her role of charity Patron, for all her hard work and commitment in supporting Forest Holme Hospice during the past 3 years. We are delighted, however, to welcome Dame Annette Brooke (third from left above) as her replacement at a recent board meeting. Dame Annette, who retired as Liberal Democrat MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole in 2015, will bring her fantastic experience, local knowledge and enthusiasm to the role. Finally, we would also like to extend our thanks and best wishes to our Vice-Chair Peter Moody who retired from the board in July. PONY VISIT One of our patients had a lovely surprise visit when her pony, Skipper, came to see her at the hospice. Skipper came in with her dog, Buzz Lightyear, and provided a truly magical moment for the owner, family and staff. We always encourage families to bring pets in to visit loved-ones. 6
WORK EXPERIENCE Thank you to 15-year-old Zach, who spent a week on work experience with the fundraising team. Zach, who is a pupil at Carter Community School, was kept busy attending fundraising events and also took over our social media channels for a couple of days.
SASKIE’S STORY Congratulations to Dr Saskie Dorman, our Lead Consultant in Palliative Medicine, whose book has been highly commended in this year’s British Medical Association (BMA) Patient Information Awards. The book, ‘Joe's Liver Transplant Story’ was written by Saskie to help children going through a liver transplant. Saskie was inspired by her son Joe, who underwent a life-saving transplant in 2015. The book has been subsequently shortlisted for the overall Patient Information Award and the winners will be announced on 25th September. ‘Joe's Liver Transplant Story’ was released in January 2018 and for more information about it, contact info@childliverdisease.org GOODBYES We recently said ‘goodbye" to Dr Anna, Jan (below right), who has retired as Sister in the Lymphoedema Clinic, and Health Care Assistant, Caren (right). They were much loved by everyone at the hospice and will be truly missed but we wish them all well in the future!

TIE A YELLOW RIBBON Thank you to everyone that attended or sent messages in memory of loved ones for our annual Tie A Yellow Ribbon event in the hospice garden, which raised over ÂŁ5,000 for Forest Holme. It was a beautiful occasion - both moving and uplifting - and we were absolutely overwhelmed with the number of lovely messages, which have been displayed over the summer. Finally, a huge thank you to our wonderful team of volunteers who helped to do everything from serving tea and cake to selling gifts and plants - not to mention those who helped wash up!

FUNDRAISNG IN THE COMMUNITY SUMMER EVENTS Our volunteers have been amazing during the summer, helping us raise money and awareness at a number of events across Dorset. The team provided support at the Corfe Mullen Carnival, Upton Carnival, Wareham Carnival, Hamworthy Club Family Fun Day, Wimborne Folk Festival, Pilford Health Transport and Heritage Show, and Poole Bay Classics.

STAN THE MAN The Stanley family from Poole raised £8,390 for the hospice at the Pete Stanley Retirement Meeting, which took place at Ringwood Raceway, Matchams in May. The brainchild of 23-year-old daughter, Sammy-Jo, Pete only agreed to the event if they could use it to raise money for Forest Holme as it's very close to their hearts. Sammy-Jo followed this with a Charity Day at the Day Lewis Pharmacy in Lilliput where she works, which raised £1,000, and will be match-funded by the Day Lewis directors making it £2,000 in total! DORSET SOLDIER Thank you to landlord Geoff - pictured here with our Health Care Assistant Jane Bowtell and staff and patrons at the The Dorset Soldier pub in Corfe Mullen who raised £500 for the hospice. RUBICON Rubicon People in Poole kindly presented us with a cheque donation for £200 following a nomination by Prolec Ltd.

CORPORATE SUPPORT MAZARS We welcomed Karen & Karen from Mazars in Poole to the hospice as the organisation has chosen Forest Holme as its Charity of the Year. As well as making various donations, they have also held a staff Cream Tea fundraising event and have put together a team of 10 runners to take part in the Supanova 5k run as part of the Bournemouth Marathon Festival in October.
MAI-TAI Andy Coleman (left) from Mai Tai Cocktail Bar in Poole delivered a cheque for nearly ÂŁ1,000 raised at their Winter Lodge event.

LOLA’S CHALLENGE Congratulations to 10-year-old Talbot Heath School pupil Lola House, who made the national news having been one of youngest people to complete the Welsh 3000 challenge. She raised over £1,500 for the hospice.
BRAVING THE SHAVE Huge thank you to Rebecca Whitaker, who braved the shave and raised £350 for the hospice.
LILLY’S LOCKS Well done to 13-year-old Swanage School pupil Lilly, who raised £360 for Forest Holme by having her hair all cut off.

SANDWALK 1,300 pupils from Poole High School took part in their annual Sandwalk from Shore Road all the way to Bournemouth Pier and back. Last year the event raised approximately £8,000 and this year the school hope to smash that amount! JURASSIC CHALLENGE Jurassic Coast challenge participant, Maria Thomas-luker, was the 58th female to complete 58km in 14 hours, raising £1,000 in the process.
ON YOUR BIKE Leigh Chaplin has set himself an impressive challenge of riding 2018 miles in 2018 for Forest Holme Hospice in memory of his mother-in-law, Patricia Edmunds. So far, Leigh has raised £250 and we wish him the very best of luck completing the next part of the challenge, which means approximately another 800 miles of cycling!

FOOTBALL SUPPORT We were absolutely thrilled to have been chosen by Football For Cancer to receive a cheque donation for £5,000. Created in 2008, Football For Cancer has grown from a single football tournament to a charity that brings people together across the South Coast to raise money for cancer related charities. SEEDS TO SUCCESS A big thank you to Maureen and Diana, who have raised £1,600 through plant sales at Wimborne St Giles, Diana's house and our recent Tie A Yellow Ribbon event.
COFFEE MORNING Thank you to Tony, who hosted and baked cakes for a Coffee Morning at Trinidad House in Poole where he raised £180 for the hospice. RIDE FOR DELL II A wheely big thank you to Rob Piper and everyone who participated and supported the recent Ride 4 DEL II charity 100 mile bike ride to Portland Bill and back in memory of his father-in-law. The turnout was fantastic and the weather stayed dry, which meant everyone completed the ride and raised £825 for the hospice 20
BLUE BOAR Thank you to Carol Frampton, landlady at the The Blue Boar, who has donated another £210 via our Collection Tins on the bar, bringing the total raised so far by the pub for Forest Holme to £1,760.
GOLF CLUB Thank you to Canford School Golf Club who raised £544.33 for the hospice during a golf day in memory of Mr Rob Jones. Mr Ron Bright, pictured here with Mrs Jones, presented our Finance and Fundraising Administrator, Kathy Cobb, with the cheque donation. PSYCHIC FAYRE Thank you to Dawn and Alison from Sunflower Productions Psychic Events, who raised £201 for us at a Psychic Fayre in Bournemouth.
PORTSMOUTH HOY Thank you to landlady Liz and all the patrons at the Portsmouth Hoy pub on Poole Quay, who helped raise £104.29 for Forest Holme through one of our Collection Tins.
CARNIVAL Our fundraiser Charlie was invited to attend a presentation by the Corfe Mullen Carnival Committee, who handed over a cheque for £1,260 as Forest Holme was one of their chosen charities for the recent event. 21 15
ROWATHON We were delighted to welcome Charlie Ling from Fitness First Poole to Forest Holme. Charlie organised the recent Wear Yellow Day 'Rowathon' (see p10-11) which raised £606.89 for the hospice.
WINE TASTING Keith Cridland kindly raised £1,000 for Forest Holme at a recent Wine Tasting event he organised through his company Lakeside Wines at Lake Yard Club in Hamworthy. Here is Keith with Rachel, the Assistant Manager at Lake Yard, with our Certificate of Appreciation. TESCO COMMUNITY ROOM Sally and Carla from Tesco Tower Park Community Room kindly brought in donations of pyjamas, throws and tombola prizes when they visited us to see the completed garden (see p26).
HASKINS Our lovely team of volunteers spent every Friday in June bucket collecting at Haskins Garden Centre for the hospice, raising 16 over £700 during the month. 22
RIVER CRUISE Thank you to everyone that supported our charity Wareham River Cruise - kindly sponsored by Hays Travel Broadstone - on board Greenslade’s 'Purbeck Gem' boat, which raised £2,412. TROLLEY DASH Congratulations to 89 year old Theresa Fishlock who won our Trolley Dash prize draw and went wild in the aisles at Sainsbury's. Thank you to everyone who entered and helped us raise £1,843 for Forest Holme.

CREAM TEA We had a wonderful turnout for our Cream Tea event, which raised nearly £600 for the t hospice. The St Mary’s Church Longfleet Centre was a great venue and their staff were lovely but a special thank you must go to our wonderful volunteers and those who very kindly baked and donated such delicious cakes. 23 21

SMOKE ON THE WATER While we were out on our Wareham River Cruise, the staff from The Lord Nelson pub hosted their own lively Smoke On The Water boat party in Poole Harbour for the hospice. Landlady Anna (pictured), staff and patrons have been amazing supporters of Forest Holme in memory of their friend Donna Turner and the boat event raised £900, bringing the pub's current fundraising total to a staggering £25,395.38!
JEDI MASTER Congratulations to Johnny Howard, who raised £1,035 for Forest Holme by completing the Star Wars Half Marathon in Disney, Florida in April.

COLLECTION TINS Thank you to all those who have been collecting their loose change in a jam jar for Forest Holme. Our 'Small change, Big difference' appeal has paid for daily newspapers for the patients, travel costs for our volunteer Bereavement Counsellors and even a year's supply of fish food for our newly refurbished pond. Your small change really does add up and help to fund the 'small' things which help to make all the difference to our families. Since we introduced the appeal we have raised ÂŁ8,000 to date, so thank you. Collection tins and boxes are a great way to support Forest Holme. Not only do they raise vital funds, but they also raise awareness of our work in the local community. Thank you to those who have chosen to support us in this way. GARDEN PROJECT GARDEN PROJECT Thanks to a grant from Tesco Tower Park Community Room via their Bags of Help appeal organised by Groundworks, we have been able to make improvements to our courtyard garden, which means that our patients and their families are able to go outside and enjoy time together in a tranquil setting. We are also thrilled that, thanks to the generosity of Pondtek, our garden pond has had a full clean and service, and we can confirm that we actually have 34 fish in there!
A special mention must also go to the Brethren of Amphibious Lodge, who very kindly came in on a weekend to paint our garden furniture, and to Chestnut Nursery and Edens Landscapes, who both kindly donated plants.

A Receptionist/ Ward Clerk to greet visiThank you to Marbellys (below, right) who joined us at Poole Hospital in May as part of Dying Matters Awareness Week Marbellys’ husband, Michael, passed away at Forest Holme in 2016 at the age of 56 following a bowel cancer diagnosis and used her own experience to help highlight the importance of talking to our loved ones about our final wishes. She said, “I truly believe there needs to be more opportunities for people to do this in a welcoming environment without judgment or preconceptions It was also great to see the Hospital's Chairman, Steve Erskine and Matrons Louise Coll and Geoff Walker sharing what matters most to them and getting behind 'Dying Matters Week'.

HOSPICE NEWS BUILDING ON THE BEST Our Building on the Best Transformation Manager for Poole Hospital, Clive Hunt, is one of the roles currently funded by donations kindly given to Forest Holme Hospice Charity. Working alongside Dr Amy Pharaoh, Clive has been very busy working with a variety of colleagues and teams across Poole Hospital developing initiatives to help improve the quality of end of life care in acute hospitals. The Building on the Best programme at Poole Hospital not only aims to benefit patients and their families locally, but also across the UK by sharing information and experience of successful initiatives with other hospitals and organisations.
ALL PARTY PARLIAMENTARY GROUP Our Chair and Charity Manager attended a session of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Hospice and Palliative Care at Westminster on the 13th of June. Forest Holme Hospice Charity had initially submitted written feedback to the group on the question of how to improve access to palliative and hospice care. The Charity believes that the proper commissioning of palliative and end of life care by NHS England would assist in greater equity and access to good care for individuals and their families, both locally and nationally. They were kindly hosted before the meeting by Michael Tomlinson MP (Mid Dorset & North Poole), who was very interested to hear about the work of Forest Holme in his own constituency and also the challenges facing hospices in providing good care to a growing number of individuals and their families in Dorset each year. 30
HAPPY BIRTHDAY NHS! We celebrated the 70th birthday of the NHS on July 5th with a fabulous cake at the hospice, while Saskie, our Lead Consultant in Palliative Medicine (below, middle), was invited to Westminster to mark the occasion, along with Poole Hospital CEO, Debbie Fleming and Hilary Fenton-Harris, Poole Africa Link Coordinator at Poole NHS Foundation Trust.

THE SECRET WARDROBE POOLE GOES VINTAGE Thousands of visitors packed out Poole Quay in July for the Poole Goes Vintage festival, which had chosen Forest Holme as its charitable partner. The event raised ÂŁ1,000 and was a celebration of 1940s-60s music, fashion, memorabilia, entertainment and transport, with The Secret Wardrobe working closely with vintage events specialist Real Vintage. The shop would like to thank everyone involved with making the day such a success, especially those who volunteered on the day to help in a number of roles from modelling clothes to running stalls.

KNIT & NATTER The Secret Wardrobe now hosts a Knit & Natter group every Friday from 10.30am 12.30pm for anyone who wants to learn to knit, finish any outstanding projects or join in with our volunteers making items for sale. The group are currently making items to sell for Christmas, including Angels and Christmas Puddings. However, as one of the members Moira explains, the group isn’t all about the end product. She said, “It really doesn’t matter if you’re an experienced knitter or just a novice as the Knit & Natter is about much more than that. It’s also about socialising and meeting new friends, especially for those who feel isolated at home.” She continues, “We have a lot of fun and being in the shop while people are shopping creates a warm, inviting environment. I think it also helps people who feel a bit self-conscious while shopping.” The group are always looking for new members and there is just a £2 voluntary donation per person, which includes refreshments. 37

Sunday 30th September: Great Hospice Hike - enjoy a professionally led walk of approximately 8.5 miles taking in some of Dorset's most beautiful scenery.

Thursday 11th October: Fire & Ice Walk - brave a walk over fire and razor sharp broken glass. Friday 12th October: The Big Brunch - we are looking for local businesses and groups to host their very own Big Brunch this October to raise awareness and vital funds for Forest Holme. Friday 26th October: Family Barn Dance - dig out your checked shirt, dust off your dancing shoes and join us for a ploughman’s supper and dancing with a live band at the Hamworthy Club, Canford Magna. Sunday 25th November: Salisbury Chamber Chorus ‘The Romantic: England’ - 7.30pm performance at St Aldhelm’s Church, Branksome in aid of both Forest Holme and LewisManning hospices featuring the music of Elgar, Parry, Ireland, Stanford, Smyth and more. Thursday 29th November: Light up a Life - enjoy a mixture of carols, readings, prayers and remembrance at our annual Light up a Life service at the Civic Centre, Poole from 6.30pm till 8pm. Saturday 8th December: Dance Through the Decades - taking place at the Hamworthy Club, the event includes a two course festive themed dinner and half a bottle of wine at £30 per person. Sunday 16th December: Santa Stroll - we invite you and your family to take part in our Christmas themed walk from 10am £10 for adults & £5 for children (includes Santa hat). Thursday 20th December: Santa Trail - join Santa and the Hamworthy Fire Fighters on a festive trail through Hamworthy, Turlin Moor, Waterloo Estate and Canford Heath.
