Ribbon’ event in our newly revamped garden area, thanks to Tesco’s Bags of Help Grants Programme, Streak Free Window Cleaning and the dedication of our three volunteer gardeners who keep it looking beautiful all year round. It’s a lovely day to remember loved ones and you can write a dedication to someone special on the form on page 21. We really hope to see you there for a cup of tea and slice of homemade cake on June 14.
Finally, Forest Holme Hospice Charity will celebrate its 25th Anniversary in 2019, so we are starting to think about special events and activities we can do next year. We’d love to hear your thoughts and suggestions as to what you would like to see happen. We realise that we won’t be able to do absolutely everything, but it would be great if you could let us know what you might like to see in our celebration year. Any ideas are welcome!

CONGRATULATIONS HANNAH Congratulations to our Fundraising Manager, Hannah O’ Hare, and her husband Oli, who welcomed baby daughter Ivy Frances into the world on April 2nd. Ivy weighed 7lbs 2oz and both mother and baby are doing well. Hannah also sends her thanks to everyone who has sent cards, gifts and best wishes.

SPRING LUNCH Thank you to everyone who came to our Spring Lunch, helping to raise over £500 for Forest Holme. We also must say a big thanks to Paul and his team at the Cock and Bottle, Morden for the amazing food, service and hospitality.
BINGO NIGHT It was a 'full house' for our popular bingo event at Cobham Sports and Social Club in February. Thank you to everyone who joined us - you raised £2,000 for Forest Holme.
QUIZ NIGHT We had another successful soldout Quiz Night at Cobham Sports and Social Club in March. Congratulations to our quiz winners - 'Densa The Original' and thanks to all those who attended and helped on the night and raised £1,500.

FUNDRAISNG IN THE COMMUNITY BROADVIEW SHADING We are thrilled to announce that Poole-based Broadview Shading Solutions has adopted us as their official charity for 2018. Love was then in the air at the Broadview showroom as they celebrated Valentine's Day by raising money for the hospice.
BESPOKE 4 BUSINESS Our friends at Bespoke 4 Business also took the opportunity to spread a bit of love for Forest Holme by dressing up in red for Valentine’s Day.

DORSET FREEMASONS There was a surprise visit from Dorset Freemasonry who have generously donated £680 to help patients and their families in need of our care. QUIZ NIGHT Our supporters Chris Southon and his friend Maureen kindly hosted a charity quiz night at Cargo Lounge and raised £400 for Forest Holme Hospice.
CHRISTMAS LIGHTS Forest Holme was presented with a cheque for of £2,845 from the residents involved in Runton Road's Christmas Lights display. Fittingly on the day of the cheque presentation, it would have been the 77th birthday of Viv's (pictured) husband George and the family have been committed supporters of Forest Holme Hospice.

TESCO Carla and Sally, Community Champions at Tesco Tower Park, visited the hospice with a £500 donation from collection tins on till points at the store.
TEA PARTY Thank you to our supporter and volunteer Caroline Fowler, who along with other lovely Forest Holme volunteers, hosted a Tea Party for the hospice, raising a fantastic £451. (also see page 26-27)
QUIZ NIGHT Thank you to Julie and Gemma who organised a quiz in memory of Gemma’s dad Brian Ball, who sadly passed away at Forest Holme in December. The night raised £1,040 and everyone enjoyed a ploughman’s and raffle. Both Julie and Gemma work in the outpatients department at Poole Hospital. EASTER EGGS Thank you so much to everyone at Barclays and their Investigation Team who delivered 106 Easter Eggs to Forest Holme.

The Investigation Team has chosen the hospice as its Charity of the Year and collected these Easter Egg donations from staff across Barclays House in Poole.
CARE HOME A big thank you to Amberwood House, part of the Colten Care Group, who along with the Mayor of Ferndown, presented our Fundraising and Communications Manager with a cheque for £753.67 over the Easter weekend. The care home has been supporting Forest Holme as its Charity of the Year through a number of different fundraising events and initiatives. WEDDING GIFT Congratulations and thank you to Mr and Mrs Smith, who gave Forest Holme a £228.29 donation in lieu of wedding favours for guests when they recently got married at the Poole Guildhall.
CRAFT FAYRE Karen Hesketh's Craft Fayre at Lytchett Matravers Village Hall raised £1,142 for Forest Holme. The event was extremely well attended, so thank you to everyone that supported it and especially to Karen for arranging it. DANCE NIGHT Thank you to Gerry Nayton, who visited Forest Holme along with Anne and Maureen, to hand over a cheque donation for £1,036. Gerry raised the money at his recent Red, White and Blue Charity Dance event, where he was supported by a few of our wonderful volunteers. 13 13
HAIR-RAISING Congratulations to 6 year old Lilly Claxton who had her lovely long hair chopped off to raise money for Forest Holme Hospice. Lilly wanted to do something positive for her Nanny, who is being supported by the hospice, and has raised ÂŁ1,138.
CHARITY CHOP Supporter Sandie Hayden took part in a Charity Chop, which involved a dramatic cut n' colour that raised ÂŁ335 for Forest Holme.
POWER WASH Incredible work from Alex House at Streak Free Window Cleaning who kindly offered his services to power wash our courtyard garden. Alex and his colleague, Joe, volunteered their valuable time to kick-start our garden project. (see page 25)

AFTERNOON QUIZ Our volunteers and Fundraising Team had a fantastic afternoon at Brompton Court in Bournemouth where they supported Vicky Brown’s afternoon quiz with tombola, raffle and lots of tea and cake that raised £400 for Forest Holme.
MASONIC LODGE We were delighted to give a tour of the hospice to members of the Masonic Lodge Amphibious Chapter, who visited to present Forest Holme with a cheque for £1,500. We’d like to thank them for their continued support.
SKI TRIP Thank you to the lads from the Haymoor Squash and Racquetball Club who raised £78 for Forest Holme Hospice through various fun activities during their recent skiing trip to Morzine.
BUFFALOES Thank you to the Royal Antediluvian Order Of Buffaloes Wessex Province, who raised £3,675 for Forest Holme, having chosen the hospice as their Charity of the Year.

NATIONWIDE Thank you to Ahmed and his team at Nationwide Building Society in Wimborne, who have been supporting Forest Holme as their Charity of the year, by collecting items for our recycling scheme.
WHITE STUFF Thank you to all the staff at White Stuff in Wimborne, who recently raised a total of £101.46 over two days through their 'Countdown to Summer’ event, which included cocktails, mocktails and a Summer -themed photobooth. White Stuff also raised £117 by holding a tombola at their store in Wimborne.

SCOUTS Canford Heath Scouts have been busy fundraising in support of our work. A special mention goes to Aaron, who raised £105 by making and selling pom pom creatures. He was presented with his 'Fundraising Badge' by our Charity Manager, Anne. ODDFELLOWS Thank you to those who have chosen to support us with Collection Tins. The Oddfellows Arms has raised £1,047 since they started collecting for us in 2014.

Making a will the right way helps to ensure that your hard-earned savings will go to your family and not to the taxman.

RUNNING FOR CHARITY RUN WITH YOUR HEART, NOT WITH YOUR LEGS
LONDON MARATHON 2018 HANNAH Hannah Hand entered the London marathon ballot for the first time and was shocked, excited and frightened to hear she had got in. Hannah successfully completed the race and said she's raising money for Forest Holme Hospice "because they do amazing things for our patients locally and my sister Amy works there as a palliative care consultant."
SHARON Sharon Kingham’s marathon journey began in October last year and, 6 months and nearly 600 miles later, she joined more than 40,000 runners at the big event in London Before the race, Sharon described herself as "excited, slightly petrified but most of all looking forward to running with pride for Forest Holme Hospice." 24
TERESA Well done to Teresa who ran the Brighton Marathon in April. Teresa said, “Never in a million years would I have dreamt that I would be running a marathon, especially as just over 7 years ago I was diagnosed with, and still have, a benign brain tumour in my inner ear which at times made even walking in a straight line a challenge�
GARDEN PROJECT Thanks to a generous grant from Tesco’s Bags of Help Grants Programme, we are in the process of transforming the hospice garden to create a bright, tranquil, Mediterranean-style space for patients and their families. We have been overwhelmed with the number of people offering to help with our garden project but a special thanks must go to
Howard and Josh Horn, for building bistro sets, sheds and high planters, and to our regular garden volunteers, David, Petula and Marilyn, who have been working tirelessly planting and tidying in the recent sunshine. 25
FUNDRAISING FIRST Caroline Fowler is one of Forest Holme Hospice Charity’s dedicated volunteers and recently decided to take the plunge and organise her first ever own fundraising event. How long have you been a volunteer at Forest Holme and how did you get involved? Nearly three years. My husband was cared for so well at Forest Holme in his final weeks - as was I, so I feel a strong attachment to the hospice. Tell us about the recent fundraising event you organised? I organised a Tea Party for friends and neighbours at my home. I asked for a donation of £5 for tea and cake, but I was lucky - I know lots of people donated more. You organised it completely by yourself – how do you think it went? I was very pleased with the outcome - it was hard work, but well worth it for the £486 I was able to donate to the hospice. A drop in the funding ocean, but I hope every little helps. I had lots of positive feedback from friends afterwards - bit of a bonus that everyone seemed to have had a nice time, as well as helping Forest Holme. I made sure everyone who came was told about the final amount raised and thanked them for their contribution. I also had several friends who kindly made/donated cakes for the event and helped me on the day and with setting up. Were you nervous about hosting your own event and what would you say to others who may be apprehensive about organising one? Yes I was! I had been building up courage to do it for ages. In the end, though, I just told myself that it wasn't about ME at all - it was to help other people and that drove me on. One thing I did do, though - I 'canvassed' my potential guests beforehand, just to be confident of 24 their support. 26
I also tried to target people who were a bit outside the Forest Holme 'radar' - even though they knew how important it is to me, I had not previously asked them for financial support. I do think sometimes these days, some people suffer from 'charity fatigue'! And it widened the scope of awareness. Finally, do you have any good tips to help people make their events successful?
Yes! Remember it's NOT about you - it's about others.
Make sure you have enough folk willing and available to support the cause on the day.
Choose a time of year (and day of the week) when you think people may be available - I thought March was a good time, as it wasn't traditional holiday period and (normally at least!!) the weather is relatively kind!
If it's a tea party, try to get some donations from local organisations - they can only say 'no'! I was very pleasantly surprised when Compton Acres donated 25 lovely scones for the CONTACT DETAILS event. I just sent out some emails - some companies didn't respond at all, but I did try! Several friends also made cakes for me.
I laid on a 'fun' tombola - wrapped the parcels so there was an element of surprise. When you have an excess of Christmas gifts, for example, put some aside. A friend who took it upon herself to be in charge said it became addictive. I also had some other small items for sale - some FH items and some little Easter bunnies I made.
I took a bit of a risk in inviting people who wouldn't necessarily know each other, but I suggested to those coming alone to bring a friend along - makes it so much easier to enter the room! Actually, everyone seemed to 'gel' really well!
One important practical thing - if you have lots of people, ask to borrow Forest Holme's tea urn and get someone to help you make the tea!! In my case, everyone came at once! Thanks, Vicky, for coming to the rescue!
Finally, I am really pleased to say that one or two guests who support 27 other charities were motivated to do the same, so it can go well.

THE SECRET WARDROBE The Secret Wardrobe can be found on the first floor of The Dolphin Shopping Centre and sells a range of clothes and accessories suitable for every occasion. Thank you to the Big Yellow Self Storage Company, Dolphin Shopping Centre and Oak Services for their continued support. POOLE GOES VINTAGE The shop will be celebrating all things retro on the Quay as Poole Goes Vintage returns on July 15th and has chosen Forest Holme as its charitable partner. This celebration of 1940s-60s music, fashion, memorabilia, entertainment and transport is a feel-good festival the whole family will enjoy and The Secret Wardrobe is looking for donations of men and women’s vintage clothing, as well as seeking models (no experience necessary) for the day. Please contact Natalie in the shop for more details. SUITCASES & WEDDING HATS WANTED The shop is looking for donations of unwanted suitcases to help store out of season clothes and accessories and would love to hear from anyone who has wedding hats or fascinators that they no longer require. KNIT & NATTER The shop now hosts a Knit & Natter group every Friday from 10.30am 12.30pm for anyone who wants to learn to knit, finish any outstanding projects or join in with our volunteers making items for sale. There is a £2 voluntary donation per person and refreshments will be available. 30
THE SECRET WINDOW DRESSER If you’ve ever wondered who creates the beautiful window displays in The Secret Wardrobe, then meet Viv Taylor, who has been volunteering as a Window Dresser since the Forest Holme shop first opened in October 2012. Viv knew she was destined for a career in window dressing from the age of 17 and has since worked for leading department stores including Debenhams, John Lewis, Beales and the esteemed Peter Jones in Sloane Square, London, before setting up her own Eye For Detail business locally. Every Tuesday Viv comes to the shop to help, not just to dress the windows but to also help with updating internal displays using her creative and visual skills. Over the years she has used countless themes, such as bridal, tropical, nautical, Easter and Valentine’s, to transform the shop, often using an array of props to make the most out of the clothing stock. Viv said, “I love being involved with The Secret Wardrobe, not just helping with the displays, but also being part of the shop and the team, who are all so lovely.” *The Secret Wardrobe is looking for Saturday volunteers to help in the shop. HOSPICE NEWS LOCAL HERO We said a huge thank you to Malcolm Hobbs, who used his 4x4 to transport many of our nurses to and from the hospice when we experienced the treacherous ice and snow. Malcolm, whose Mum was looked after by Forest Holme nurses before she passed away before Christmas, was helped by his 8 year old co-pilot Annabel, collecting and dropping off nurses for both day and night shifts.
CLUSTER PROBE Thank you to the Dorset Cancer Care Foundation for funding an Infra-red Cluster Probe for our Lymphoedema clinic. The new probe will be used for pain relief and deep musculoskeletal disorders associated with cancer treatment. Thank you to DCCF founder Leslie-May for making this possible.
STITCH AND ENRICH A number of the hospice Ward Nurses got together recently for a "Stitch and Enrich" evening. They were very productive in producing 35 syringe driver bags for Forest Holme and have more evenings planned. 32
PALLIATIVE CARE CONFERENCE Staff members were at the Bournemouth International Centre representing Forest Holme Hospice during the APM Annual Supportive & Palliative Care Conference.
“Towards evidence based compassionate care� was this year's theme and our team were exhibiting five Poster Presentations covering areas including treatment escalation plans, communication at the end of life and Vitamin D.

TIE A YELLOW RIBBON - THURSDAY 14TH JUNE 2018 As part of National Hospice Awareness month, we invite you to “Tie a Yellow Ribbon” in memory of a loved one or friend in the courtyard garden at Forest Holme. Visit the hospice between the hours of 10am and 4pm on Thursday 14th June 2018 and join us for a cup of tea and a slice of cake. Please be aware that parking is very limited at the hospice and we would appreciate it if alternative parking could be sought. (also see page 20-21)
NATIONAL CREAM TEA DAY - FRIDAY 29TH JUNE 2018 To celebrate National Cream Tea Day, Forest Holme is throwing open its doors to all our supporters from 12 noon - 4pm for an afternoon of delicious scones - with Rodda’s clotted cream and jam - and cakes, served with tea (kindly donated by Dorset Tea) or coffee. 26th May -10th June: Dorset Arts Week - Watercolour artist Judith Ryde will be donating 20% of her proceeds from her exhibition at 19 Cedar Drive, Wimborne, BH21 2JQ (open daily 11am-4pm, except Thurs 2pm-8pm) to Forest Holme. Sunday 10th June: Open Garden Afternoon - Judith Hooper opens her beautiful garden at 15 Cuthburga Road, Wimborne BH21 1LH to the public with tea, coffee and cake for £5 in aid of Forest Holme. The garden will also be open on the afternoon of Saturday 23rd June as part of Wimborne In Bloom’s Open Gardens Day. Saturday 23rd June: Broadstone Community Band Concert ‘From Bach to Boogie-Woogie’ in the Concert Hall at Lighthouse 7.30pm. Tickets available from Lighthouse, Poole. Saturday 21st July: Open Garden Day - Peter & Joyce Dean warmly invite you to their Open Garden Day at 19 Moorside Road, Corfe Mullen BH21 3NB from 2pm onwards for homemade cakes and tea in aid of Forest Holme. Saturday 28th July & Saturday 8th September: Wing Walk experience the ultimate aerial adventure as you raise funds for Forest Holme Hospice (see page 35). Friday 21st September: Sunflower Ball - join us for our flagship event at the Harbour Heights Hotel with a welcome drink, 3 course meal, half a bottle of wine, coffee and live entertainment. Sunday 30th September: Great Hospice Hike - enjoy a professionally led walk of approximately 8.5 miles taking in some of Dorset's most beautiful scenery. Thursday 11th October: Fire & Ice Walk - brave a walk over fire or broken glass (see page 35). Friday 12th October: The Big Brunch - we are looking for local businesses and groups to host their very own Big Brunch this October to raise awareness and vital funds for Forest Holme. Friday 26th October: Family Barn Dance - dig out your checked shirt, dust off your dancing shoes and join us for a ploughman’s supper and dancing with a live band at the Hamworthy Club, Canford Magna. Thursday 29th November: Light up a Life - enjoy a mixture of carols, readings, prayers and remembrance at our annual Light up a Life service at the Civic Centre, Poole from 6.30pm till 8pm. Thursday 20th December: Santa Trail - join Santa and the Hamworthy Fire Fighters on a festive trail through Hamworthy, Turlin Moor, Waterloo Estate and Canford Heath.
