DEAR FRIENDS we hope to be here for the next 25 years helping the local community as they approach the end of their lives.

As for my own Friends of Forest Holme, as we 25th fundraising plans, I am giving were then known, started to the Wing Walk some serious fundraise for the life enhancing work of Forest Holme, part of Poole consideration, but as someone who is scared of flying it’s currently a Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. battle between heart and head!

January 2019 marked the start of our 25th Anniversary celebrations, so it is a time to reflect on all that has been achieved during the last quarter of a century, remember all those whose lives touched by Forest Holme, thank everyone who has been a part of making the hospice what it is today and get ready for whatever the future might bring. And with your continued support and fundraising

This newsletter is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to letting everyone know what people have been up to for Forest Holme Hospice. We are incredibly fortunate to have a huge number of unsung heroes – volunteers, supporters and staff - who contribute to the Hospice’s working life in their own way and we are very lucky to have them as part of the Forest Holme family.

25th ANNIVERSARY

2019 marks 25 years since Friends of Forest Holme – as it was known then – was set up to raise funds for the new specialist palliative care unit.

Since then, donations from supporters have helped the hospice to care for around 20,000 adults and their families and since then the charity has grown to meet the increasing demand for the Hospice’s services.

We wouldn’t be providing the kind of care we do today if it wasn’t for the support of the local community. Therefore, we want to use the 25th anniversary as an opportunity to bring our staff, supporters and communities together to reflect on lives we have enhanced over the past 25 years, and look towards the next 25 years and secure the funding to help Forest Holme continue to be here for future patients and their families during the most difficult time of their lives.

EVENT NEWSOF IN MEMORY

Robert William Hulls 5th November 1955 – 22nd September 2018

During a move from Bristol to Poole to semi-retire, Rob was diagnosed with terminal cancer and less than three months later we found ourselves at Forest Holme. He was overwhelmed by the care that he was given which helped him and his family and friends a lot.

Rob began to get to know the nurses and staff in the hospice very well and was very often found smiling and laughing with them, as well as being known as the sweetie man. We, as family and friends of Rob, were always made to feel so welcome and the team cared for us just as much as they did for Rob. 6

ROBERT HULLS The team were able one day to help Rob get out of his bed. This is where the realisation hit after making his way around the hospice he noticed the wall of dates (the hospice timeline). Rob took his time reading every single piece of information on that wall and was amazed.

During his two week battle at Forest Holme Robert had made it clear to us that he wanted us to raise money for the hospice.

After her Dad’s passing, Georgia took on the task of beginning the fundraising in memory of Robert. With the help of the Charity team, Georgia set up a Just Giving page and within days reached her target that was set. At her Dad’s funeral she made it a priority to continue to raise awareness of the hospice and on that day reached a total of £1,000! As a family together we have raised over £1,300 and this will continue.

LIGHT UP A LIFE Light Up A Life Event

Thank you to everyone that attended our annual Light Up A Life event at the Civic Centre in Poole to remember a loved one.

The weather was kind and it was a very special event with carols, readings and prayers led by Rev. Fraser Smith, chaplain at Poole Hospital.

Thank you also to The Mayor of Poole, Cllr Sean Gabriel for hosting the ceremony and both The Salvation Army and Wessex Chorus for providing the music. Over ÂŁ600 was raised for the hospice.

Remembrance Tree Our Remembrance Tree, which was situated at the Echo Hub inside The Dolphin Shopping Centre, raised ÂŁ4,128.

Thank you to all our supporters who wrote a star in memory of a loved one and made a donation.

Also to our amazing volunteers who gave up many hours of their time to man the fundraising stall.

A Finally a special mention to Rising Voices, Wessex Chorus and Phil Smith for providing live music across the two and a half weeks.

CHRISTMAS CHEER Thank you so much to Haskins Garden Centre in Ferndown and Liz Lean PR for donating beautiful Christmas wreaths to the hospice.

Jackie Broughton (above, right), pictured here with our Community Nurse, Joss, very kindly delivered a delicious homemade Christmas Cake for the third year in a row, to raffle off for the hospice.

The Longfleet District Nurses (below) team raised ÂŁ16 for the hospice during Christmas Jumper Day.

We had a lovely photo and cheque for ÂŁ100 sent to us by Kevin Lovell (above), who raised the money by being Santa at Christmas.

CHRISTMAS CHEER Thank you to everyone that boogied the night away to classic tunes from the 50s/60s/70s/80s/90s and noughties at our Dance Through The Decades event and helped raise £1,700 for the hospice.

Big thanks to Poole Blood Donation Clinic for organising a Christmas raffle and Secret Santa donations in memory of their colleague and friend Michelle Williams, who was cared for at Forest Holme, raising £651.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire Service and Poole Fire Station kindly visited us to deliver £450 to Forest Holme raised through the generosity of the residents of Waterloo and Hamworthy during their Santa Trail.

Thank you to Toni & Guy in Poole, and especially their lovely clients who purchased raffle tickets to win their Christmas Baileys hamper, helping to raise £80 for the charity.

Thank you to Beales of Poole, all our volunteers and everyone that came and supported us by having their Christmas Gifts wrapped over the past few weekends at Beales in The Dolphin Shopping Centre.

Well done to everyone that braved the elements and joined us for our annual Santa Stroll (above) in Wimborne, which raised £776. A special thank you to walk leader, David Knox, who also kindly led our Hospice Hike across the Purbecks earlier last year.

This was agreed to be done in memory of Rebecca Buckell, who worked in the Poole Accessorize store (above) and was cared for by the hospice. They raised £128 - thank you!

FUNDRAISING Our Bingo Night at Cobham Sports and Social Club was a fantastic success, raising £2,099 on the night for the hospice.

Thank you to our Trustee, Stuart Bradford (above), at Coles Miller Solicitors in Poole, for donating a beautiful M&S hamper as a prize for the Bingo Night.

Congratulations to our very own Kirsty Perks (right), who went a whole seven hours without saying a word to raise money for the charity.

Residents at Waterman House (right) in Broadstone have chosen Forest Holme as their Charity of the Year and have already started fundraising, with lots more events and activities, including raffles, coffee mornings and a fashion show, to come later this year.

Our wonderful supporters at The Lord Nelson pub raised another £640 at their Vampire Masquerade Ball (right), taking their total fundraising for the hospice to over £26,000.

Poole High School (right) presented a cheque for over £8,000, which the pupils raised by completing their annual Sandwalk from Sandbanks to Bournemouth Pier and back last summer.

Our fundraising team visited the Nationwide Building Society in Christchurch (left) to talk to their staff about the work of Forest Holme as part of our exciting new charity partnership with the branch.

HOSPICE LIFE Congratulations to Margaret and Russell (below) and our other five hospice volunteers, who completed their Bedside Companion course, which enables them to sit with patients each evening, who are at end of life, struggling with anxiety or have no family.

Thank you to Richard Bradford (above), who cycled across Dorset delivering The Lost Words, a beautiful book full of gorgeous illustrations that creates and maintains both calm and happiness.

The volunteers now have a rosta, which means there is a beside companion available seven evenings a week.

We are very grateful to the Tesco Tower Park Community team who kindly donated two brand new tables (above), which our counselling team are now using in both their private and group sessions.

Patient and devoted AFC Bournemouth fan Gary Stephens (third from right) and his 13-year-old son, Kai, had a morning to remember when Cherries manager, Eddie Howe, took time out of his busy schedule to pop-in to the hospice for a chat.

Our patient Ian Attiwell had a lovely surprise when the Bournemouth & District Concert Band (right) visited to put on a very personal performance for him in the lounge.

Ian played the cornet since the age of 4 and joined the Concert Band about 18 months ago, so his partner Roz secretly organised for them to put on a special concert at the hospice for him.

Eddie was more than happy to pose for photos with both family and staff and sent both the family and charity signed merchandise and photos.

Thank you to Funky Little Choir (left) who visited the hospice to sing to patients, families and staff as part of their Random Acts of Choirness Day, where they toured the area in a huge bus, performing to a number of different charities.

WHAT IS THE COURT OF PROTECTION ACT And How Can It Help Me? We are seeing increasing numbers of cases involving people who have lost mental capacity and – as a result – need help from the Court of Protection.

All this causes terrible worry – not just for the people concerned but also for their loved ones. Aside from the vital care aspect, there is also the matter of unpaid rest home fees. Bills of £30,000 are not unknown. I know of one case where the bill has reached £100,000.

COMMUNITY NEWS

This court safeguards the rights of vulnerable people who can no longer take decisions themselves.

Many (but not all) of the people it helps are elderly and have dementia.

The Court of Protection appoints deputies to take decisions on behalf of the person concerned.

Often, they are members of the person’s family but they can also be trusted professional advisers.

There is an issue however…

It can take months to get a case heard by the Court of Protection, during which time the person may be struggling to get a place in a care home. They may be unable to pay their care fees because – without mental capacity – they can’t access their bank account or savings.

One lady in her 80s had to spend five months in hospital until the court appointed a deputy who could allow payment for the

And in another case, an elderly lady has been waiting six months for an order to be granted to enable her outstanding care home fees to be paid. At time of going to press, her case had still not been heard.

How can this be prevented? The answer is simple: take out a power of attorney…or rather two powers of attorney; one to cover your finances, the other to cover your health and welfare.

A power of attorney enables you to appoint loved ones and/or trusted professionals to take decisions on your behalf after you have lost the mental capacity to do so.

In many respects, the roles of the attorney you nominate and a deputy appointed by the Court of Protection are identical. They perform the same role. Their job is to look after the interests of the vulnerable person concerned.

But here’s the crucial difference: the power of attorney route is quicker, cheaper and less stressful.

So it pays to plan ahead and take out powers of attorney before the need becomes overwhelming and events make it impossible to act… leaving a costly deputyship as the only viable option.

It is also important to note that – although powers of attorney tend to be associated with older people – they can be taken out by anyone aged over 18 and with mental capacity.

FOOTBALL FOR CANCER Football For Cancer (FFC) originally contacted Forest Holme in July 2017, as they were organising a series of donations called ‘5 Days of Giving’. The plan was to give away £5,000 per day for five days to different cancer charities across the south west, which included the hospice.

The FFC team then visited the hospice to present the cheque and were also given a tour of the facilities.

During the tour there were discussions about future collaborations, which was when the idea of hosting a special football was suggested.

Further conversations resulted in a match featuring Team Jarvis being confirmed at Cobham Sports and Social Club on Sunday 12th May 2019.

Team Jarvis will play in memory of Peter and Sasha Jarvis, parents to Carlton, aged 15 and Remmy, aged 11 (pictured). Tragically both parents died within months of each other only a few years ago, with Peter passing away at Forest Holme in 2018.

The children are now under the full-time care of their Uncle Russell, who said, “I would like to thank Forest Holme Hospice for the amazing care they gave Peter and the constant support they give to myself and the children. They will always be in our hearts."

June Saturday 8th: The Secret Garden Party - this unique event, marking the 25th Anniversary of Forest Holme, will take place inside the beautiful Walled Garden at Upton Country Park on Saturday 8th June from 7pm – midnight. Ticket includes a Welcome Drink, delicious 3-course meal and live music from Le Freak.

Thursday 13th: Tie A Yellow Ribbon - join us to “Tie a Yellow Ribbon” in memory of a loved one or friend in the courtyard garden at the hospice between 10am - 4pm and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and cake.

Friday 21st: Wear Yellow Day - gather your friends, family, colleagues and school mates to take part in this year's Wear Yellow Day in exchange for a small donation. Or perhaps host a cake sale, coffee morning or raffle?

July Friday 19th: Garden Party - our Patron, Dame Annette Brooke, will be hosting an afternoon Garden Party for Forest Holme at her house in Broadstone.

Thursday 25th: Wareham River Cruise - join us for our everpopular Wareham River Cruise, which includes a stop-off at Wareham Quay, live on-board entertainment, fish and chips and a watch the fireworks at Poole Quay.

October Friday 25th: Halloween Dance-A-Thon - join us for our Halloween Dance-A-Thon; a 4 hour Dancing & Fitness Fundraising Challenge on Friday 25th October 7.00pm - 11.00pm at Hamworthy Club, Magna Road, Canford Magna.

November Thursday 28th: Light up a Life - enjoy a mixture of carols, readings, prayers and remembrance at our annual Light up a Life service at the Civic Centre, Poole from 6.30pm till 8pm.

December Saturday 7th: Dance Through The Decades - enjoy a Christmas Party at Hamworthy Club, Canford Magna with music from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s & 90s from 7pm - midnight. Tickets ÂŁ35pp includes a two course meal, coffee/tea, two glasses of wine and a disco.
