Footballing memories and life away from football, we get to know our most recent addition - goalkeeper
Ted Cann - on loan from West Bromwich Albion.
What is your best moment in football?
Hopefully it will be winning at Wembley in a few weeks time! But so far would have to be winning the Premier league trophy with WBA U23’s a few years back. It was at home against Wolves, and we won it in front of 8,000 at The Hawthorns.
Who is the best player you’ve played with or against?
I’d probably say Morgan Rogers is the best I’ve played with - he played a year up with us at WBA youth level and he was a standout for sure and now he’s going well in the Premier League, too. Best I’ve played against was probably Mason Greenwood - he was both footed and would just score every time we played them.
Which Ground have you played at with the best atmosphere?
Going back to the final at The Hawthorns. 8,000 at an U23’s game is incredible and they didn’t stop singing all game.
Footballing hero.
Growing up it would’ve been Joe Hart, I support Manchester City so watching him play for them and England too.
Do you have any hobbies outside of football?
I play golf sometimes – or try to at least! I’m very much a summer golfer. I don’t bother when it’s freezing in the winter!
I’m often on the PlayStation with my mates too - it’s a good way for us to chat to each other as we’re all sort of scattered across the country.
Is there a favourite place you’ve visited?
It would have to be Rio de Janeiro followed closely by Las Vegas! We went to Rio last year and it was so good that we’re going again this off season! There’s four of us that travel the whole of the off-season and Rio, in Brazil, was the best for all of us.
Do you have a favourite TV series/film?
There’s far too many to choose from, I’ve watched The Office far too many times! Game of Thrones, The Last of Us are both up there too.
Who is your best friend at FGR so far?
It’s a good bunch of lads here they welcomed me in straight away - I knew Knowlesy (Tom Knowles) from playing with him at Yeovil so he was a familiar face.
What song goes on your Matchday playlist?
Lots to choose from, my go to is probably Lost in London but I tend to listen to all sorts - a matchday is usually house music for me.
What is the best goal you’ve seen live?
Maysey (Adam May) against Solihull I think, I’ve seen a fair few screamers but that’s the most recent one!
Forest Green Rovers welcome Gateshead to The New Lawn for the first time since 2016 as we head into our final five National League games.
Dale Bennett scored the only goal of the game as Rovers defeated the Heed 1-0 on their last visit to Nailsworth.
During our most recent meeting with Saturday’s opponents, goals from Liam Sercombe and Christian Doidge saw Rovers come away from the northeast with all three points back in September.
Since that meeting right back at the start of the season, the Heed have been battling it out in the play-off positions.
However, they have recently seen their position put at risk with a drop in form winning just one of the last nine games.
Last Saturday saw them pick up their first win in over a month when Tim Akinola and Ethan Robson secured a 2-1 victory over Dagenham & Redbridge.
Gateshead will be looking to build on that
victory knowing that a defeat could see them slip out of the play-off positions.
They will be looking to turn their away fortunes around with a winless streak in their last four games on the road.
In the dugout, manager and the former defender, Carl Magnay has been enjoying his first full time managerial job after leaving a coaching role at Carlisle United in October.
Magney replaced Rob Elliott who took the helm at League One side Crawley Town and has overseen 28 games in the league picking up 10 wins and 37 points in that time.
Magney played for the Heed firstly between 2012 and 2014 after joining from Chelsea and returned to the club for second stint in 2021 before retiring two years later.
A player Rovers fans may want to keep an eye on would be the Heeds’ midfielder, Luke Hannant.
Hannant has been their most productive player, scoring 13 goals and providing nine assists in 39 league appearances.
The original Gateshead AFC was formed in 1930 when neighbours South Shields – members of the Football League’s old Third Division North – moved to Gateshead because of financial difficulties.
The newly formed “Tynesiders” almost capitalised immediately on their good fortune when only Lincoln City’s superior goal average denied them promotion to the second division in just their second season of League football.
The crest encorporates the famous Angel of the North statue located in Gateshead. Completed in 1998, the landmark has become one of the north east’s most famous artworks in the world. It is also believed to be the largest angel sculpture in the world.
The Gateshead International Stadium – also know as the GIS is the third largest stadium in Tyne and Wear – the all-seater stadium has a capacity of 11,800. They moved to the GIS during the 1971/72 season, after playing at Redheugh Park.
