Welcome to Revel and Revolt - Fordham Theatre’s 2024-25 Season of plays presented on our Pope Auditorium MainStage.
Each of these shows has a deep resonance within our community, offers exciting opportunities for creative risk and play, and celebrates empowerment through art and community – values that reflect the Theatre Program itself
Kicking off the season is Karen Zacarías's compelling play, THE SINS OF SOR JUANA, a tale about legendary Mexican poet Juana Inés de la Cruz. Director Kat Yen helms Leah Nanako Winkler’s wry, refreshing, and playfully theatrical KENTUCKY, a modern–day millennial version of The Odyssey The timeless Brechtian classic, THREE PENNY OPERA will jumpstart 2025, directed by Artist-in-Residence, George Drance, SJ Set in Victorian London, the story revolves around the notorious criminal Mack the Knife and his exploits in the city's underworld The culminating production of the season is Fordham Theatre’s commissioned work, HOROSCOPE, by acclaimed playwright Rajiv Joseph, a Pulitzer Prize finalist and recipient of the Obie award. Helmed by May Adrales, the Director of the Theatre Program, this play is about twelve twenty-somethings experiencing early adulthood
The plays in our 2024-25 season break open genre and expand the boundaries of what we think of theatre These plays reinforce that the training and education Fordham Theatre’s students participate in is one of the most daring in the country. Not only because of our dedication to plays that examine relevant issues of our time, but also because our season reflects our belief that theatre is more than just entertainment It is a vehicle for examining our souls and bettering humanity.
This is a celebration of rebellion, resilience, and the transformative power of the stage We can’t wait to see you at our MainStage shows this season!
by an expansive academic curriculum, Fordham University’s nationally renowned Theatre Program prepares students as theater practitioners and visionaries. In a creatively fertile, experential and artistically rigorous environment, the Theatre Program nurtures the individual, encouraging students to follow their passions and activism. As a program centered on the values of social justice and responsibility, we aim to serve our greater global community as citizen artists, using theatrical expression to create paths for empathy. understanding and dialogue.
Revel and Revolt was born out of a year-long collaborative process with our students during monthly meetings filled with lively discussions and thoughtful commentary on who we are as a program and a people.
We look forward to working together to realize our dream of racial justice and equity, all while being good stewards of the work, our city, and our world. As we continue to engage with our everchanging world and field, we could not be more excited to share these stories of the power of art and community with our audiences.

George Drance, SJ has performed and directed in over 25 countries on five continents, serving such companies as teatro la fragua (Honduras), and Theatre YETU (Kenya). He is the artistic director of the acclaimed Magis Arts Collective (magistheatre.org), praised by the New York Times for its artistic skill and daring. With La MaMa’s Great Jones Company, he has toured the world with the Swados/Serban Fragments of a Greek Trilogy and as a key collaborator with Ellen Stewart. He is a team member of the Trojan Women Project. Other acting credits include The Metropolitan Opera, Public Theatre/New York Shakespeare Festival, American Repertory Theater, Ping Chong & Co and Yara Arts Group. He has appeared on NBC’s The Blacklist and Comedy Central’s The Daily Show. Film credits include The Light of Eons, Solidarity, and Chinoiserie. “The playwright Bertolt Brecht was born in 1898 in the German town of Augsburg. After serving as a medical orderly in the First World War and appalled by the effects of the war, he went first to Munich and then to Berlin in pursuit of a career in the theatre. That period of his life came to an end in 1933 when the Nazis came to power in Germany Brecht fled and during this period the Nazis formally removed his citizenship, so he was a stateless citizen. In 1941, Brecht became a resident in the USA but returned to Europe in 1947 after appearing before the House Un-American Activities Committee. Ostensibly against communism, this committee also targeted intellectuals. By the time of his death in 1956, Brecht had established the Berliner Ensemble and was regarded as one of the greatest theatrical practitioners.
As an artist, Brecht was influenced by a diverse range of writers and practitioners including Chinese theatre and Karl Marx. The turmoil of the times through which Brecht lived gave him a strong political voice. The opposition he faced is testament to the fact that he had the courage to express his personal voice in the world of the theatre. He also had an original and inspired talent to bring out a dynamic theatrical style to express his views.
His most acclaimed work is Mother Courage and Her Children Although it’s set in the 1600s, the play is relevant to contemporary society and is often regarded as one of the finest anti-war plays. Fear and Misery of the Third Reich is Brecht’s most overtly anti-fascist play. This work analyses the insidious way the Nazis came to power. ”
