Meet the team at

gutta slim Just to start, the moment you walk in you can feel the vibe. The art on the wall just makes it a whole vibe. I love the energy. Let’s talk about the shop a little bit. How did you get the shop started?

I go by the name Gutta Slim. I’m formerly known to be a music artist around Florida, Fort Myers. I started out in the tattoo business by being an investor with another shop.

We went our separate ways and I opened up my own shop. I’ve been in business for 5 years now doing tattoos. My own shop, it’s been 3 years.

We got dope people around us. It’s like a family here.

Coming from a music perspective, was the transition to tattoos a little easier? And is tattooing a natural skill or something you had to learn?

Tattooing is very different. It’s a very different skillset, skill trade.

Even Cuba been tattooing for 20 years and still learning. It’s new techniques that come out every year, every day. There’s always growth. But I would say in a sense the music kinda helped. Because I already had the fan base, it kinda helped customer wise. And it’s kinda the same when it comes to promotion and marketing. I did that in the music industry, and I tell them all the time, it’s almost the same thing. We kinda utilize the music aspect and put it towards the tattoo aspect.

Is it a natural talent?

I mean, some people are blessed and born with it.

The very first tattoo that you did, was it on a human? and how did you feel?

Gutta: it was a human, I know I practiced on real skin. Why learn on fake skin? Like I said, some people are born with it and some people have to work towards it. Different techniques come out every day, every year and you have to adjust.

What is the end goal for you?

Gutta: I want to branch out in different locations. I have a lot of different plans.

I have a lot of different goals. I want statewide, nationwide. We still working.

I don’t wanna talk too fast. You block your blessings like that. I want to keep working, keep learning, keep grinding and checking off that checklist.

I’m Cuba, from Miami. They gave me a family here. I have 28 years in the industry doing tattoos personally myself before I moved here. It’s been love and family basically. Out of all my experience of working with people, this is one is the best and most family-oriented jobs. It’s better than anywhere else.

What kind of art do you specialize in?

I do everything but I like portraits a lot and color jobs, full color preferably.

My name is Matt. I’m an upcoming artist. I just started recently about a year ago. I dropped a couple of pieces here and there. But since I’ve been here, since I’ve been around artists... My whole life I’ve been tattooing. Not so long, but it’s been like a family. Gutta Slim opened the shop to me with open arms, like a family would and I’ve been loving it ever since.

What type of art do you do?

More like detailed work. Nothing too crazy, like portraits. Cuba here pretty much mastered tattooing. I’m trying to work towards more realism here and there but just pretty much what people want. People come in here, they want a specific tattoo, something tedious. I try to catch that detail for them.

Is it a natural talent?

I’ve always been an artist. That’s why when it came down to bottom line, I just jumped right into it. Like I said, they had a spot and I said, let me give it my all. I have family as well, a little brother who’s been tattooing for a very long time that I still learn from. Because things change up and you have to adapt.

It came natural I guess.

I work upfront. I take care of all the customers.I make sure everybody’s comfortable, get the tattoos ready for the artists, pretty much just watch over all of them really.

I’m Bella. I’m also an apprentice. My first tattoo here was 3 years ago, and I’ve been coming back since, and I finally got in to being an apprentice.

What Made you want to get into tattoo’ing My mom’s been tattooing. my mom doesn’t tattoo anymore, tho. My uncle tattoos. I was an apprentice 3 years ago, or longer than that, but I was an apprentice for 3 years and I didn’t learn anything, I’ve learned more here than before in a short amount of time.

Miggz My name is Miguel. I’m pretty much the newest to the bunch. They’ve been like family ever since. I’m just an apprentice, learning, applying my artistic abilities to everything they have available to teach me.

What kind of art?

I do all different types of art. I’ve been doing graffiti and cartoon arts since I was a kid in middle school. But I’ve gotten into Poxy art, Resin art. I do floors at my other job, so I try to be creative as possible. I do things at home for my kids.

Is it a natural talent?

I’ve always drawn, and I wanted to apply my art in some way to share it with everybody and tattoos are a great way to do that. Because it’s a permanent work of art. It’s also a bond. You have to trust your tattoo artist to be able to tattoo you.

Tattoo Flame “

I always look at every single tattoo, even if I think that it’s perfect, and say what can I have done better.

Go ahead and introduce yourself My name is Warfield. I go by Flame.

My artist name is TattooFlame56.

That’s me! 2020 makes 14 years that I’ve been tattooing.

How did you get started in this industry?

I’ve been an artist for as long as I can remember. When I was 15, I got my first tattoo. Two weeks after getting my first tattoo, I looked online on how to make my own tattoo machine and I made my own tattoo machine at 15 and I just stuck with it.

Now that you’ve been tattooing for this long, do you have a specialty that you enjoy over others?

I really enjoy getting into my color pieces. My colorwork, I really take pride in my color pieces.

What’s the most memorable piece you’ve ever done?

I would have to say my very first sleeve. It took me about 12 hours to do, I did the sleeve to get the job.

I was an apprentice trying to be a tattoo artist and I tattooed the shop owner’s son. I couldn’t tattoo during business hours so I had to tattoo after 2 am when the shop closed and this piece took me from 2 am after the shop closed to 2 pm when the shop opened up the next day. And I would say that was the most memorable piece that I’ve done, that really stuck with me out of all the back pieces and full sleeves that I’ve ever done.

Even my most favorite color sleeves and full back pieces, that one will always stick with me.

Tell me about some of your accomplishments. Let’s brag a little!

I’ve been owning my own tattoo shop for 8 years now. I’ve done 2

apprenticeships. Apprenticed about 7 people, after having my own business for 8 years. I’ve gotten into a lot.

Like, I have an Airbnb on top of my tattoo shop. I invest in real estate. I do a lot of pro gaming. I breed French Bulldogs. I do quite a bit, a lot of accomplishments I’m very proud of.

I am looking for a new artist at my business. I am the only artist at my business and I am looking for new artists, but I do have the top-rated tattoo shop in my area, and three surrounding areas: New Orleans, the West Bank, The East and Metairie.

Orleans Ink is the top-rated tattoo shop! At least that’s what Google and Yelp say.

What do you attribute the success to? Is there one key ingredient?

Yes, I look at every single one of my tattoos, even if I feel like it’s perfect.

I’m a perfectionist. A lot of times, I may look at tattoos and feel like I’m done. I’ll look at it from a camera view before I take a picture of it and see this and see that. I always look at every single tattoo, even if I think that it’s perfect, and say what can I have done better.

Is there any piece you’ve been wishing to do?

I wanna get to my armpits but I don’t know what I wanna put there yet, but I’m definitely looking for that piece.

I’m not gonna say it’s gonna be the last thing that I tattoo but it got to be something exclusive on there, maybe like a portrait or something, but on both armpits. But I’ve never tattooed somebody’s armpits really. I mean small stuff, but I’m talking something really worth getting on the armpit.

“ What’s next for you?

As far as the Tattoo industry, I am looking for new artists for my business then I want to branch out into other states and enter more tattoo shows.

What’s the meaning of the 56?

When I made an email, I had to make numbers with it and I’m pretty sure at the time, the numbers I wanted to pick were not usable, so that’s why I had to use 56.

Oh, ok! I thought it would be some deep dark meaning behind the name I mean, they have some meaning.

If I could have picked, I would have picked Tattoo Flame 59. I got the name Flame in High School from some of my surrounding friends from some of the wardrobe I used to wear.

You’re from Chicago?

Yea I was born and raised on the Westside, brought up in the Henry Hornets, that’s the projects you feel me. Westside Chicago across the street from the United Center.

Tell me what it’s like growing up in Chicago?

Growing up in Chicago, it’s cold.

Everything about it is cold. It’s most definitely inspiring and motivating because a lot of great people come from Chicago.

The first thing you think about when you think of Chicago is Michael Jordan. Everybody wants to be top. Everybody wants to be a champion, everybody wants to be the greatest. That’s what everybody’s chasing when they’re from Chicago. Well, that’s what I was chasing.

Do you feel like Chicago gets the respect it deserves in regards to the greatest coming out of it?

I feel like, being from Chicago, you have to take that title. You can’t just say you’re the greatest at something you gotta kinda show it. That work effort gotta be right there. And you gotta be plugged too, people wanna know who you know, how you got in touch with these people, the connections... it just can’t be a word of mouth. People can’t just front like they are who they say they are, people are going to find out, they’re going to investigate in Chicago.

A lot of “Loving Memory” Tattoos be from gun violence or some type of violence, so you gotta be careful of what you’re promoting out here.

What would you say is your style when it comes to tattoos?

I would say my style is more of a ratchet, illustrated, cartoonish, kinda like the afro-centric with Black culture in it, a little knowledge in it.

All my tattoos tell a story.

The first tattoo you ever did, was it on a person, or did you practice on something else?

My first tattoo I did was definitely on a person and how did it come out?

It came out the way it was supposed to come out. I made sure that what I was doing, I was comfortable with it. It was a friend that I started on. It wasn’t the best, but he appreciated it. That’s what made me want to start doing tattoos, even if somebody else that didn’t get the tattoo thought it wasn’t good, as long as the person who got it appreciate it.

How has Chicago shaped you as a tattoo artist?

Chicago shaped me, to be an original. It forced me to be original. Chicago is pretty big so you got a lot of competition so, kinda forces you to be original. You can’t just go around copying other people’s designs. It kinda helps you be original in everything you do. Me being in Chicago and me being a tattoo artist it forces me to be on point, as far as everything. If I do a tattoo on somebody, they might be from a different neighborhood from somebody else. And I do a tattoo on them and one of their members just got killed, and I post that tattoo, just in loving memory of their lost soldier, and somebody else might see it and be like “this where he gets his tattoos at,” or “he up with that.” I gotta choose what I post, I 15

I’m unapologetically Black.

I love everything, Black. I love Black women, I love the color Black, I got on Black right now.

It’s in me.

It wasn’t really about the money, it was about putting the Westside on. We’ve always set the pace for Chicago. We’ve just never put a stamp on it.

Apart from Tattoos, any other passions? You seem very passionate about your culture. Can you tell me how the Black culture has shaped you as an artist?

I am unapologetically Black. I love everything Black. I love Black women, I love the color Black, I got on Black right now. It’s in me. It’s powerful and it can’t be ignored, and it’s the most loved and the most hated at the same time. Me being a man, I just gotta preserve my own and by me preserving my own, I preserve everything that’s Black and everything that it comes from. That’s why I’m here for the Black woman.

Let’s jump to you being on a reality show. How did you get to be on the show, and what was that experience like?

Me being on Black Ink Chicago is kinda driven by the TV star Ryan. He has his own tattoo shop and they’ve been at it for a couple of seasons, so they went out searching for new local artists and I came up in the conversation. When the producer called me, I was on house arrest. I had just got out of some trouble where the police had harassed me and found my pistol on me, so I bonded out and they put me on house arrest.

While on house arrest, the producers hit me up about the show. I was like “as

long as you give me some paperwork for some movement, I’m down.”

Were you immediately open to opening your world to the public?

I wasn’t. I’m from the Westside. Everything we do is lowkey. We about our money. You can ask anyone that’s from anywhere else.

Everybody will tell you the difference between Southside and Westside, and the Westside, we’re about our money. It wasn’t really about the money, it was about putting the Westside on. We’ve always set the pace for Chicago. We’ve just never put a stamp on it. So I’m just doing what the hood wants me to do.

Is that something you plan to continue doing, or will you get to a point where it’s like “Ok, yall gotta get out my game room now.”

On some Kanye West shit?

Yea. I’m always gonna represent the Westside, cause believe it or not, I’ve stayed in Chicago all my life and I’ve never moved outside of the Westside. I’ve been everywhere else, I know the streets everywhere, the Eastside, Northside, but I’ve always stayed out West.

Overall, what was your experience like on the show?

I think overall it was a good experience. Even though it kinda put the spotlight on

the bad that we go through as Black artists. The women, the workplace, and everything. But overall it put the spotlight on the originality and the reality of it all. Everybody goes through things, even the people who look like they not going through things.

I’m a tattoo artist. Everytime somebody comes to me, they expect perfection.

Every single time. Outside of being an artist, the show focuses on what an artist goes through when they’re not doing art. And that’s important too, because you never know what people are going through. I think overall it’s a good thing.

That being said, what do you want the audience to take away as far as who Prince is.

I’m the funny guy who makes everything better. If everybody’s mad and arguing, I’m gonna be the one who comes in like “Hey, yall stop that.” I’m really big on energy` and positive energy is always good. So if the energy is bad and I have the power to switch that, I’m most definitely on that.

A flower garden on the left side, an elaborate peacock on the right makes Cardi B a walking canvas of inked art and beauty. Remastered after 10 years, she revealed the updated peacock image, reminding us all of how we watched her grow into a super star right in front of our very eyes.

It is actually a tribute to his little brother, Tay Man, who was killed in a drug deal at a very young age. Tay Man initially got the dagger tattoo to represent the gang they were in. However, after he died, 21 Savage got the same ink as a mark of respect.

The number four has long held significance for the Carters. Not only did they both release albums where four featured prominently in the title, and not only are their birthdays on the fourth, hip-hop’s royal couple also married on the fourth as well. To celebrate, JAY-Z and Beyoncé both had the Roman numerals “IV” tattooed on their left ring fingers.

Lil Wayne has “Fear God” tattooed on his eyelids and a “C” between his eyes.

The “C” represents the initial of his mother’s first name – Cita and his last name – Carter.

Arguably the most famous ink in hiphop history, Tupac’s “Thug Life” tattoo, the phrase is actually an acronym which stands for ‘The Hate U Give Little Infants Fucks Everyone.’

Represents his life as someone who has lived through tough life to be where he is standing today.

What started out as a butterfly on his right cheek has since metamorphosed into an LA Dodger’s cover up, which later transformed into a red star. The butterfly was supposed to symbolize new beginnings following The Game’s split from G-Unit

High Timez Jamie Desants, owner and founder of High Timez. Tell me a little about your clothing line.

This all started when I was 16, I’m 18 now, so almost 2 years ago. I was going down a wrong path in my life, I was at a real low point in my life to where I was going through depression and a lot of other things. One day I was telling one of my best friends, Chris and we were talking about these kids at our school, they were rapping and had their own clothing brand to go with it. We thought it was so basic and so trash, but everyone was buying it but it’s really not all that great.

So we knew we do better. So being an artist, I drew something up, and I do graphic design so I made a logo. And after that, it just kinda took off from there and became it a thing.

I was just about to ask if the designs where hand drawned and how do you come up with the designs?

Honestly, it just comes off the top of my head. The whole message of High Timez is, it’s not about the low times of your life, it’s about the high moments, the good moments, that’s what you

have you have to focus on to be motivated. When I came up with my design, I kinda implemented a little bit of everything, everything in my design has a meaning.

When I first heard the name of you brand, I associated with Maryjuana and not so much with High energy. Is that a concern for you, do you feel like your message might get lost in the name and they might not see the deeper meaning behind it?

That is actually something I’m working on building, because I don’t people getting confused when they buy my product. I want them to know what they’re getting.

I’m going through a redesign process, with the logo as well, that’s actually, currently in motion, we’re changing a couple things up, we’re adding a couple things just so people get the message and it’s very clear.

Can you tell me some of the High Timez of your journey so far?

When I first launched it, for

maybe about 6 months or so. Then I put it on hold due to some other life stuff that’s been happening from a few months ago. And honestly this relaunch is much better than the initial launch, just because maybe I feel like people are seeing it again and they’re seeing it a lot more. And the designs and everything are a better quality so honestly I just feel like this whole experience has been just one High moment, this is awesome. It’s an awesome experience to be able to make and sell your own clothing and to see people outside wearing your stuff.

What are some of the items your store carries?

Right now, tshirt and hoodies, and also masks. And that’s it for the most part as of now. But in the future we will be selling full outfits like slides and joggers. But right now for the time being I’m more focused on the tshirt and hoodies and not the apparels just because that’s what sells the most at the moment.

Where can people check out the designs?

Right now I’m waiting on the website to launch, but for the time being they can check out my IG: Hightimezapparel

What do you have anything major planned for the brand?

I’m starting fresh in 2021, making new designs, the current design will no longer be on the market, so whoever has this design will be the only ones who has it in the world from 50 years from now to future years and they’ll be able to sell them for a lot more.

Everything is going to be fresh.

What do you have planned for 2021.

Of course the new logo, and new tshirt designs, and of course with the relaunch, they’ll be other tshirts, limited timed offers throughout the quarters of the year, like 1st quarter will have it’s own line and so on and so on.

he difference between getting something done & thinking about getting something done is going on ahead and getting that shit done. It’s simple! Sitting around wasting time on would’ve, could’ve, should’ve or mights & maybes doesn’t serve much of a purpose when it’s GO time. My mother was the type to kick into high gear when the time came to make something happen.

This woman was known for years for having some of the strongest (& sexiest, if we’re honest) legs known to man & much to do with her willingness to use them to get from Point A to Point B. She wasn’t the type of person to get ‘stuck’ when something needed to get done, albeit grocery shopping, job hunting or simply sight-seeing. She had a motto that she lived by incessantly & in turn passed down to her daughters. If it was time to go & seemingly no way to get there, she was gonna ‘put her foot to the pavement’ and make it happen. It was the only way that made sense in her opinion. It ultimately became mine as well.

You have to ask yourself… Why be stuck when you can make a way out of no way, so to speak? Essentially, across town is still across town whether you walk or catch a ride.

How long will you choose to sit stagnant concerning yourself with the woes of a situation rather than make a move to progress toward your goal? For instance, if you simply start to walk, you will be taking a step in the right direction. Rather than remain stuck, you will undoubtedly look up & find yourself closer & closer to your destination. Even more important, if you don’t focus on the upset of having to walk, the journey will be that much more carefree. You will not only find yourself exercising your body but in turn, also exercising your mind, energy, and mood while in motion. Subconsciously, your feelings of stagnation will gradually recede because you would have found yourself in forward motion. The two contradict one another & ultimately send a signal of empowerment to your brain. Yes, the journey might prove itself to be tiring after the fact, but only if it’s (exhaustion) not your focus throughout. Either way, the forward motion, no matter the time

taken to accomplish, will undoubtedly find you at your destination.

I was raised to withhold the logic that if it made no sense to sit around and wait for something to happen when you could make it happen for yourself. I come from the logic of impatience and aggravation at the mere thought of staying still when forward motion was a requirement.

Don’t get me wrong, as I was fully taught to relax and unwind, but I was taught that it’s far more enjoyable and beneficial to do so AFTER I’ve accomplished what needs to be done. The thought of chilling with something yet pressing to be done was motivation enough within itself to push my feet and legs in the go motion. I learned early on the magic of psyching yourself out to not even realize the magnitude of the journey once the path was deemed necessary. What’s even better is how magnificent you feel within your spirit once you’ve accomplished your goal. I learned early on that the way in which you looked at the process had much to do with the way in which it affected you. I learned so in turn, I (attempt to) teach! What will you take a step to progress toward

Don’t you dare forget!!!

This is your year!!! This is your season!!! This is your time!!! You kicked in the door on this year with strength, zest, determination and pure fight!!!

You reminded yourself that sometimes you have to lose to win!!! You made it your business to accept nothing less than what you know you not only expect & respect, but deserve in this life! Now is not the time to give up! Now is not the time to give in! You have prayed and prayed and watched many prayer requests come to fruition. Yes, 2020 has been a year that has dished out some stuff NOBODY could’ve EVER imagined. Yes, there are things that you have yet to solidify! Yes, there are things that you remain unsure of! Yes, there are days that you wish to be better and struggles you wish to forego, but at the core of it all, you know that your faith is monumental. You know that your faith is mandatory. Keep P.U.S.H.ing!!! Keep standing up for yourself!!! Keep standing up for what’s right!!! Do not forget for one single second that you literally walked across that bridge over troubled water!!! Do not forget for one single second that EVERY step you took on that walk included your reliance on God and/or a Higher Power to bring you to a successful ‘other side’!!! DO NOT FORGET!!!

Just like you relied on His care and complete protection for you then, be sure to continue to do so now!!! And while you’re at it, don’t fail to remember that you should be proud of yourself, too!!! Yes, He led the way, but you made the decision to hold on and keep walking forward this entire time. You could have given in and/or given up at any given time! And although you’re not perfect by any means, nor have you yet reached your maximum potential for having completely ‘got it together’, you’re here... standing tall & firm which makes you far more eligible for the peak that you sought when you took that first step!!! Keep P.U.S.H.ing!!! Keep moving!!! Keep believing!!!
