It’s your girl Ladychelle, Ford Entertainment Magazine and we’re here at Straight Up Kustomz. First let me just say I just love the shop. Just stepping into the shop you can already tell you guys know what you’re doing. But let’s get a little bit of back story.

Tell us a little bit about yourself, who you are, and what you do.

My name’s Jeff Kozar. I’m the Owner, Founder, Creator of all these things in here. I just kinda grew up doing this. I grew up in a hot rod shop up north, in Pennsylvania. My dad has always been into cars

and I just kinda followed that step from my father.

At Straight Up Kustomz, do you guys build cars, not from scratch but take a skeleton car and just turn it to a masterpiece? Or do you prefer taking someone’s car and modifying it a little bit?

To be honest, I can do either really. We’ve done Frame Off Cars. We’ve been on the cover of Rides Magazine a few times for some of the cars we’ve built. It’s basically whatever the customer wants really.

It’s their dream, we just put it together for them.

And you say you’ve been into cars all your life. At what age do you remember really taking it seriously as a job, as something that you wanted to do for sure?

Right out of high school. I really just went all into it with cars. I went to school. My college was Lincoln Tech which is an automotive school. Then I put myself through advance Routering and Fiberglass school and customization school. A lot of this stuff is, I

taught myself tho when I see something I can kinda create it.

What was your first major project?

The first car that really put me on the map, it was called the Crockadonk. But I worked for another gentleman in Fort Myers at the time I was building it. Everybody knew I built it. I blew up two of my fingers building that car, so there’s a lot of things with that car. So that car is one of my favorite cars.

Speaking of cars, of the cars we’re featuring in the magazine is your personal car. Tell us about your car.

It’s an 07 GT. It was airbrushed by a friend of mines who passed away. It’s 4 different movies. It’s Hell Boy, Underworld, Resident Evil, and Earagon the Dragon Movie. And he just kinda collaborated pictures and it’s all airbrushed.

Tell us about the inside.

Everything’s pretty much

“It’s their dream, we just put it together for them.” custom. I made everything.

I made the door panels. The dash is pretty much stock, I just painted it, stuff like that.

But I got 10s and 8s and a bunch of tweeters and plexiglass in the door. It’s basically a music car.

Any other special features?

Altogether, that car has over 18 thousand watts in it. I have a whole tower system that goes in the trun, there’s a lot of power in that car.

I can see the smile on your face as you talk about that car.

But tell us about your dream project.

A Ford Duli. I want to slam one to the ground and just do the whole bed with music. Music’s my passion. This all started

from a music shop and it’s just grown into a paint shop and customization shop, and as I’ve grown, people have come along and gotten on my team. But even the guys that work for me, the least amount of time someone’s worked for me is 4 years. We have a pretty tight team of very good guys.

Tell us about the events you guys do.

We’re all over Florida. We go to all the big shows. We won the Classics last year in Orlando, MLK Day. We’re known when we pull up with our crew. They know Ft Myers when we step out in Orlando, Tampa, Miami. We just follow the music, the car shows. And if something’s interesting, we hear about it Friday night, we’re there Saturday. We just run it.

Beauty of the month

T he History of DONKS in Florida Florida is responsible for the birth of many staples in Hip Hop culture and donks are definitely one of them. The uniquely urban, Florida-born car culture surrounding donks—full-sized Chevrolets built between 1971 and 1976, customized with flashy rims, extravagant concert-hall quality sound systems, and often painted wild, candy colors.

With roots in South Florida’s distinctive hip hop culture, urban youths first took to donks out of convenience in the early to mid-1980s, as parents and grandparents would bequeath the decades-old rides to their children and grandchildren. The car’s noted, enormous trunk space earned them the nickname donk, which was also used to reference a human’s large posterior.

Customizing one’s donk—already some of the biggest cars on the road—with madcap paint jobs, extravagant rims, engine modifications and sound systems became an expression of one’s personality and ingenuity.

And with Miami rap icons from Uncle Luke to Rick Ross riding donks through the last three decades, the uniquely Floridian car culture has spread to other parts of the country.

Zay, go ahead and introduce yourself real quick I was born Isaiah Capers.

My music name I go by Buzzcity Zay representing the Charlotte Hornets, that’s where I’m from, Charlotte, North Carolina.

The type of music I do I would describe as, you know, Pop, Dancehall, a little Reggae, Hip Hop a little bit. But less rap and more like pop. Fun music.

Being that your name represents where you’re from, tell us about your city and why it makes you want to carry its name.

Charlotte is home. I learned everything, good down to the bad. I learned how to read, write, count money, play basketball, play football, baseball. Poetry classes in school. Just, I feel like wherever I go, when people realize I’m a great person and cool to hang out with, it’s important that they know Charlotte is what raised me.

When did you start making music?

My actual first song I put out back in 2014. That was the first time I ever really got in the studio. I still wasn’t taking music seriously then, but I still got introduced to the real studio as far as being able to record, mixing and mastering, and everything like that. But I would actually say 2019 was the year for me as far as “you know what, I’m going to get an

LLC, I’m gonna get my name Patented and Trademarked, I’m gonna buy my beats. As far as trying to make a living off of it and turn it from a hobby to a career. So I would say last year was the starting point for me.

And what has your music career been like since you’ve decided to focus on it as a business?

Aww man it’s been great.

It’s open different doors as far as like being able to talk to different Djs, getting plugged in with different radio stations, Power98.

This past year I actually got the chance to do a “Radio Ready” show with No Limit Larry, who is our #1 radio personality here in Charlotte. I was able to get on his platform and actually perform the song that I’m pushing right now Hot girl Wine. Actually since taking it seriously, and actually investing in myself and putting my own money in it, it just opened a lot of doors and opportunities for me to continue to reach my goals.

How important, as an artist, is it to invest in yourself?

That’s the number one thing. If you believe in yourself enough to invest in yourself, how can you look for investors or ask anyone else to help you reach your goal? Investing in yourself is the number one thing.

Tell us about the single?

Honestly, I made the song in 2014. It’s 2020, and I’m getting the most exposure I’ve ever had because I actually started invested in myself. I was online looking for beats. At the time I did this as a hobby, the beat was actually called Hot Girl Wine. As I was listening to the beat, I could hear those words being said on the beat. So I called Chezzyy boy, at the time he was recording everything.

So I went to the studio to record the song. He said, “Hey man, you got something. It’s a hit!” I heard him, but I didn’t really, like ‘yea, it sounds good.’ But I didn’t really understand it then. I was like, ok. A song is a song. But the more people I let hear it, they started telling me the same thing. They were like, “Man you need to push it! You need to do a video. You need to do this, do that.”

And I’m like, “Ok, I hear you.” But I was in college, I had my first kid, so it never just clicked. But after over the years and every body

telling you the same thing, even after years after you made the song. This song still today is still a hit. What you gonna do with it? So bringing it up to speed to today, I got a Distrokid account right around December 2019, and I uploaded the song. After I uploaded on Apple Music, that first week I had 5000 streams.

It shocked me. Everything everyone’s been telling me about the song is true. That was amazing to me. As an unknown, to get 100 is amazing, let alone 5000!

Now that you see the potential, what’s your ultimate goal with music? Where are you trying to get to?

Honestly, I wanna be the best.

And that’s why I’m in the lane that I’m in. I’m in my own lane.

The closest artist to me right now is Rotimi. He’s giving that same type, that same type of Reggae vibe that I give. Other than that, nobody’s in my lane.

Who Invented Hip Hop? Chuck D agrees with him....

“Muhammad Ali appears frequently along the timeline of my life. I was born in 1960 — the year he went to Rome in the Olympics. Of course, growing up and seeing a black man on TV, not only boxing, but being able to win, grab the mic, snatch it back (thank God) and sound like he’s in a rhythmic flow, with a good tone of voice, doing some rappin’. It was just astounding. As kids, we couldn’t help but be amazed. Muhammad Ali not only influenced hiphop of course from the rhyming aspect, which is a known fact, but the brash swagger of backing it up: going into the dozens, making predictions.

His boldness is hip-hop. It’s like he was saying, ‘First and foremost, I’m gonna overshadow everything in my path so that you won’t forget me ever. And I’m gonna throw some rhyme on top of it.’ It’s total hip-hop. Total rap! It was backed by performance. That’s the thing about it.”

Toure from VICE says: “Muhammad Ali was hip-hop before hip-hop existed. He is a father of hip-hop. He’s one of the men who the young hip-hop generation watched as we shaped our idea of what it meant to be a man. (There are many fathers of hip-hop—I would include Malcolm X, Richard Pryor, James Brown, and Bruce Lee on this list, but their stories are for another day.) By hip-hop, I do not here mean simply rappers or even the specific hip-hop community. I mean something more like, “Ali was a core influence on the essence of hip-hop culture as broadly understood.” Hiphop culture meaning people like Jay-Z and Rakim, as well as people like Richard Sherman and Jamie Foxx and Serena Williams and SNL’s Leslie Jones and on and on. Hip-hop culture is bold and brash and sometimes at war with the nation that’s enthralled with it. That’s because hip-hop is the son of Muhammad Ali.”

Black is King

BLACK MEN ARE NOT DISPOSABLE. BLACK MEN ARE SUPPORTIVE. BLACK MEN ARE STRONG. BLACK MEN ARE LOVING. BLACK MEN ARE KINGS. BLACK MEN ARE OURS. BLACK MEN ARE WHY. Black men deserve just as much credit (if not more) for any one of their counterparts in this life. Black men take care of their families. Black men are there for you when you need them. Black men step up and take care of children, whether they’re theirs or become theirs. Black men are leaders. Black men are romantic. Black men are there when push comes to shove. Black men are God-fearing. Black men are respectful. Black men are protective. Black men are educated. Black men are sexy. Black men are honorable! Black men are loyal! Black men are affectionate. Black men are sensitive. Black men are well-rounded. Black men travel distance to ensure your safety. Black men pour in to you. Black men believe in you. Black men try for you. Black men die for you.

I love a black man. I love multiple black men.

I love the blackness of their skin.

I love their melanin.

Black men are MEN!!!

Black men are my kin!

Black men are my zen.

Black men are them. {Pssstttt... I’m not even ‘bout to play with you ‘bout them!} STOP KILLING OUR MEN. STOP KILLING OUR MEN!!!

Shout out to the Youth!

REAL QUICK: I want to take a moment to give a shout out to the youth for doing their best to keep their heads above water in this cold, cold world! It ain’t easy being young! It ain’t easy trying to make it! It ain’t easy dealing with distractions! It ain’t easy dealing with disappointment! It ain’t easy dealing with stereotypes! It ain’t easy being black and brown (although it’s awesome)! It ain’t easy being smart while still having to make dumb decisions and not be treated as a pariah for having done so! It ain’t easy having the prior generation as parents! It ain’t easy navigating through a world that’s unforgiving! It ain’t easy dealing with family issues! It ain’t easy realizing that your friends ain’t really your friends! It ain’t easy losing your friends! It ain’t easy dealing with regret! It ain’t easy being in your teens & twenties! It ain’t easy dealing with pressure! It ain’t easy dealing with deceit! It ain’t easy dealing with school! It ain’t easy dealing with fools! It ain’t easy out here, and yet they’re still pushing... still trying... still learning... still growing!

I’m truly concerned for the young people! I’m concerned because I’m a mother to young people! I’m concerned because the young people I’ve both birthed, raised and am still very much responsible for (no matter their ‘grown’ status) are not only losing their young peers, but are also among a generation of those that are losing or have never had a sense of morality, strength and respect in many cases. I’m concerned for the young people who don’t have anyone in their lives to truly love them beyond their mistakes, misunderstandings and missteps. I’m concerned for the young people who very much have people in their lives that love them and yet they refuse to see it. I’m concerned for the young people who do not understand the brevity of life or its value. I’m concerned for the hearts of young people who do not know how to handle the onslaught of misguidance and chaos that they’re inundated with in this time while trying to save face, keep up with the Joneses or maintain some level of ‘reputation’. I’m concerned for the young people who do not read. I’m concerned for the young people who do not take the time to nourish themselves, heal their wounds and be open about their struggles.

I’m concerned for the young people. I’m praying for each and every one of you! I’m praying!

I WANT TO TAKE A MOMENT TO GIVE A SHOUT OUT TO THE YOUTH! I’M PROUD OF YOU! I LOVE YOU! I’M ALWAYS ROOTING FOR YOU! I’LL ALWAYS BE HERE FOR YOU NO MATTER WHAT OR WHO TRIES TO MAKE YOU THINK OTHERWISE (INCLUDING ME)! KEEP PUSHING! KEEP PRAYING! KEEP GOD FIRST! KEEP ON KEEPING ON!!!

kindness Listen, let me go on ‘head & take me a second to bLou Note some ish! If you have the capability to spread love & light on someone’s day, DO IT!!! How is it hurting you by pouring some love on to someone else? Sometimes, when you’re already in a rut, loving on another brings you out of the mire. Did you know that? I can tell you that for a FACT!!! I’ve been in some of the most horrid places within the depths of my soul & have been brought out by an honest act of kindness! You literally NEVER know what somebody is going through! If you come across something of someone’s else’s, albeit a celebration, situation or declaration, take a moment to pour in to them.

Honestly...

HOW IS IT HURTING YOU TO BE KIND? Are you worried about not receiving it back?

Oh well! If you’re being kind, you shouldn’t be that way because of the return, unless it’s the fulfillment of acting in line with God & His intent for this world. Trust me, I’m not standing on some high horse by saying this. Do nottttt get it twisted... I’ll cuss me a mofo OUT out! That’s just the real & thick of it! Rest ASSURED, I’ll do what I have to do if it’s a me or you situation. But with regard to simple kindness... simple goodness in life, I do that! Period. There’s not a single person that KNOWS me that doesn’t KNOW that! We literally DO NOT KNOW how much time we have here! We literally could be in the midst of our last moments RIGHT NOW!!!

So pour in!

Love! Laugh! Live! I know for a fact that a quick smile, hug, word or uplift is monumental.

I’ve been on the receiving end of somebody’s P.U.S.H. on my life. I know the magnitude of having a ‘momentary’ action completely turn

my life around. I know so in turn, I do. If you’re not certain on how to rise above dumb shit, I’ll be more than happy to tell you! Cause God knows there’s enough of it going on in this world. I’m not saying to take BS from anyone!

I’m not saying to keep subjecting yourself to the same negativity or disrespect in life. I’m just saying that your day DOES NOT have to be bad. Your personal issues DO NOT have to be the reason you choose to hate on someone else. Your internal struggles DO NOT have to be the reason it’s damned there illegal for someone else to smile in your presence. It literally makes no sense.

Get your life in order!

By saying that, I mean to GET YOUR LIFE IN

ORDER.

YOU make the decision on how you’re

going to approach your day! YOU make the decision on how much love is going to exude from you. YOU make the decision on how far the good in you can stretch. So do it! Be the light! Be the blessing! Be the uplift! Trust me... I’ve been doing it for a LONGGGGGG time!

My shoulders have held A LOT!!! My tears have collected the pain of various torrential rains. And I still see the reasoning behind it. I still see the necessary. I still see the mandate.

BE THE LIGHT FOR SOMEONE TODAY. BE THE OLIVE BRANCH. BE THE ENCOURAGEMENT. Rest assured... God sees what you’re doing! Your just rewards are already stored anyway!!!
