DON’T BE AFRAID to Lean In

R

ecently, I read the phrase, “One of the worst things we do to ourselves is lean into our weaknesses instead of our strengths.” It’s a powerful statement, right? I think so too, but while I understand the message behind it, I also disagree with it.

I don’t see leaning into our weaknesses as a problem. I see it more as an opportunity. If we don’t lean into our weaknesses, how can we master them?

Change them? Convert them from a vulnerability into a force to be reckoned with?

For example, I don’t like public speaking. However, in my professional experience, I’ve had to do lots of public speaking, videos, interviews, etc., that have taken me out of my comfort zone. And I’m eternally grateful for those experiences, as they’ve helped me develop into who I am today.

I personally think this issue is chock full of companies doing just that, as well as opportunities for you to put that into practice in ways you might not consider.

Take our story on page 69 about why your rental business needs an online presence for example. Maybe you’re intimidated by social media and

digital content. Maybe you don’t know where to begin. But embracing the world’s new favorability of all things digital will only propel your business forward.

And here’s a clever tie-in: lean management. A practiced business tool that many might not know about. As the article on page 54 says, “The need for constant adaptation to change can be challenging.” But leaning into the business weaknesses that don’t bring value can ultimately improve work processes, purposes, and your bottom line.

Lastly, I would be remiss to not mention our Editor’s Choice Award winners. These 30 products, tools, and pieces of equipment were chosen based on their innovation and utility. Many of these companies saw a problem within the industry, a weakness if you will, and careened headfirst into solving it. Or maybe their product was revitalized after listening to customer’s feedback, leaning into the process of self-improvement. Whatever the situation may be, the award-winners stand out for their impeccable achievements in the rental and construction industries.

I whole-heartedly urge you to look at your so-called weaknesses and consider how you can change them into one of your strengths instead. You have the power to do that, and I believe in you.

MARKET WATCH CONSTRUCTION SECTOR IN AMERICAS MOST OPTIMISTIC POST-COVID & SEES TECHNOLOGY AS KEY TO GROWTH Despite the lingering effects of COVID-19, a new study has found the vast majority of project owners and construction professionals in the Americas are optimistic about the future and view their businesses as equipped for growth. The Global Capital Projects Outlook from InEight Inc. is based on research conducted with the world’s largest capital project owners and construction contractor professionals across the Americas, Europe, and APAC, focusing on optimism levels and digitization.

“The results of our Outlook speak to a construction sector in the Americas that is brimming with confidence and optimism – one that has proved itself more than equal to the tremendous challenges it has faced this past year,” says Jake Macholtz, CEO InEight.

Findings of the Outlook show 95% of respondents in the Americas are either fairly or very optimistic about growth prospects over the next 12 months, and 94% believe their organizations to be resilient – the most positive of any region.

With research conducted online over a six-week period in February and March 2021, this likely reflects the influence of recently proposed infrastructure funding legislation in the U.S., following on the back of the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, both of which were anticipated to translate into

significant capital project spending going forward.

While optimistic, respondents aren’t blind to ongoing risks.

According to the Outlook, the two most commonly cited risk factors mirror the top two sources of opportunity: economic stagnation/recession (selected by 46% of owners and 50% of contractors globally), and lagging on digital transformation (38% of owners, 44% of contractors). For owners, the next most prominent risk is staff and skills shortages (31%).

Digital transformation is considered the biggest shortterm source of opportunity, according to 65% of respondents in the Americas, with data analytics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning viewed as most critical for success in the next one to three years.

25% OF FORMER EMPLOYEES STILL HAVE ACCESS TO OLD ACCOUNTS, EMAILS Here’s a punch in the gut: it’s highly likely that former employees still have access to their emails and accounts at your workplace. According to a new report by Beyond Identity, nearly one in four employees said they still have access to accounts from past jobs. But that’s not all.

Check out these other stats from the report: • 41.7% of employees admitted to having shared workplace passwords.

• 42.5% of employees felt that sharing work passwords should be a fireable offense.

• More than 1 in 5 employees said they used the same password for their personal bank accounts as they did for workrelated accounts.

Cyberattacks on businesses, government organizations, and other groups are up by the thousands, according to the FBI, increasing awareness and action by employers around the globe.

Most survey respondents reported that they weren’t too worried about the safety of their passwords, as just over 45% believed they were very secure and another 26.3% said they felt their passwords were extremely secure.

MARKET WATCH CONSTRUCTION STARTS SLIP IN JUNE AS MATERIAL PRICES CONTINUE TO WEIGH HEAVILY ON HOUSING Total construction starts fell for the second straight month, with all three major industry sectors (residential, nonresidential building, and nonbuilding) seeing a pullback. Dodge Data & Analytics reports a 7% decline in total starts in June to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $863.6 billion. Regionally, starts rose in the Northeast but fell in all other regions.

“Unabated materials price inflation has driven a significant deceleration in single-family construction,” says Richard Branch, chief economist for Dodge Data & Analytics. “Lumber futures have eased in recent weeks, but builders are unlikely to see much relief over the short-term, meaning building costs will continue to negatively influence the housing industry.”

CONSTRUCTION BACKLOG AND BUILDER CONFIDENCE RISE IN JUNE WITH EXPECTATIONS FOR CONTINUED GROWTH Associated Builders and Contractors reports that its Construction Backlog Indicator rose to 8.5 months in June, according to an ABC member survey conducted June 20-July 6. This is 0.5 months higher than in May 2021 and 0.4 months higher compared to June 2020.

ABC’s Construction Confidence Index readings for sales, profit margins and staffing levels increased modestly in June. All three indices remain above the threshold of 50, indicating expectations of growth over the next six months.

CIVIL CONTRACTORS EXPECT INCREASED WORK VOLUME AND PROFITS, BUT SKILLS GAP CONCERNS GROW Civil contractors expressed a positive outlook for work volumes for 2021 and 2022, despite rising concerns over the ability to meet workforce and skills needs on infrastructure projects.

Respondents to Dodge Data & Analytics’ Civil Quarterly, a quarterly snapshot of current contractor business health, are optimistic they will have sufficient workloads in the coming months and expect subsequent growth in both revenue and profit margin. But that optimism was tempered by expectations of rising costs for skilled workers and reduced skill levels in the available workforce.

Coupled with expectations for increased work volume were worries surrounding the ongoing skills shortage and related costs to meet workforce needs. The Civil Quarterly reports 60% of contractors will need to hire skilled workers in the next three months, a 17-point jump from Q4 2020 (the last time the survey included workforce data). Of those in hiring mode, 69% expect a high level of difficulty in finding workers, up 11 points from Q4. And filling those gaps will prove

costly – 81% of contractors expect the cost of skilled workers to climb.

Based on survey results, there’s room for improvement when it comes to building worker skills. While most recognize the importance of training field staff in a variety of skills, just 36% of civil contractors report having a robust, ongoing training program for new workers as a long-term investment to grow their skills and value to the organization.

“The Q3 update indicates that America is now opening for business quickly,” noted Scott Thacker, foundation chair and CEO, Ivory Consulting Corporation. “The evidence illustrated in the Outlook points to a booming

MARKET WATCH EQUIPMENT RENTAL ACTIVITY JUMPS 9 PERCENT IN SECOND QUARTER, BAIRD/RER SURVEY RESPONDENTS SAY Overall equipment rental activity increased 9 percent in the second quarter of 2021 compared to the second quarter of 2020, according to respondents in the quarterly Baird/RER equipment rental survey.

The response in the quarter was 2 percent higher than the response in the second quarter of 2019.

Positives in the quarter included a return to “normal” driving nonresidential construction; a robust residential homeowners’ market; oil and gas activity improving for some; and no significant weather issues during the quarter. The majority of respondents experienced improving end-market demand as activity returns to normal, although the positives were somewhat offset by widespread labor shortages, material inflation, and elongated new equipment procurement lead times, leaving some potential rental demand unfulfilled.

Average rental revenue increased 8.9 percent year-overyear, slightly less than the magnitude of the decline from the second quarter of 2020. Respondents reported revenue increased 2.1 percent compared to the second quarter of 2019, implying that revenue in 2Q21 more than offset the prior year

decline for this survey respondent base. Worker shortages and material cost inflation were recurring themes. The second quarter of 2021 was in line to be better than expected with 59 percent saying revenue was in line with expectations and a net of 18 percent reporting revenue ahead of initial expectations.

Average rental rates were up 1.4 percent year over year, less than the magnitude of the decline from 2Q20. Improvement in rental demand and improved equipment utilization provided pricing flexibility.

Fleet utilization was 61.3 percent, up about 350 basis points sequentially and year over year. Utilization is up year over year for the second consecutive quarter. Challenges in procuring new equipment is lifting the utilization of existing equipment.

The cost of new units increased 4.5 percent, the highest growth since 2Q15, and roughly equal to the increase in the third quarter of 2018.

Higher equipment prices are not only a factor of rising input costs in items such as steel, freight and labor but a function of improved OEM pricing power, according to the Baird analysis.

Respondents are forecasting healthy and improving expectations, essentially going back to “pre-COVID” operating dynamics. Rental fleets are stabilizing with units slightly higher than 2020 levels. Robust capex spending is expected in the second half of 2021.

Mastodon Model M60-S and M60-C Forestry Mulcher Attachments New for 2021, Dougherty Forestry Mfg. has released a premium line of forestry mulchers, the Mastodon Forestry Mulchers. These have been developed to increase the performance of regular skid steers and track loaders closer to that of a dedicated mulching machine. Some never-before-seen features include computer-controlled (ECU) shifting, teeth with built in feed control, hour and temp monitoring, and in-field smartphone tuning with Bluetooth.

Tips for Peak Performance Utilizing the correct engine and coolant maintenance is vital in reducing operating costs and minimizing downtime. Three engine manufacturers share their top service tips to maintain peak performance year-round.

Q: What are your top five service tips for larger diesel engines to maintain peak performance year-round?

Hatz: ■ Precisely follow the maintenance schedule in the engine’s owner’s manual (including daily and weekly checks) and adjust the intervals as necessary if the engine is in harsh or unusual conditions. For example, if the engine is in a dusty environment, keep a close eye on the air filter.

It may need to be changed more often than required by the engine manufacturer.

■ Be careful when power washing the equipment and engine.

Newer engines have a lot more electronic components that may be damaged by high velocity water.

■ Make sure you are monitoring your diesel particulate

filter (DPF) status and performing the requested regeneration.

Don’t just keep overriding the warnings for a passive regeneration or your engine may stop running during a shift. If you cannot run a regeneration immediately upon the first warning, make sure someone runs an active regeneration at the end of the day.

■ If the engine is seeing a lot of idle time or low-load conditions, make sure you run the engine at full load for at least 30 minutes at the end of a shift to ensure the diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) is reaching the appropriate burn out temperatures.

■ Pay close attention to any error

The EU Stage V is the most stringent regulation to date for the offhighway equipment industry, while the U.S. is currently meeting Tier 4 Final emissions standards. And with new advanced engine technology comes new strategies.

And while engines have evolved over time, so have the technologies available to help monitor engine performance and manage proper service schedules.

■ Following recommended maintenance schedules is critical to ensure that equipment provides optimum performance. Poorly maintained machines will use more fuel for the same amount of work as a well-maintained one. Preventive maintenance saves fuel costs, major repairs in the long-term, and maximizes the productivity and life of the engine.

■ Use the correct fuel, oil, and diesel exhaust fluid (DEF).

Following the manufacturer’s recommendations to ensure the correct fluids are used and kept at the required levels will ensure the performance of the machine stays within its specification.

■ Engine filters are becoming more technologically advanced to prevent harmful contaminants affecting the engine. They must meet the manufacturer’s approved standards to provide the quality of filtration necessary to achieve the engine’s design life. If other brands are substituted, there is a risk that the service intervals will be reduced and engine damage could occur.

Perkins: ■ As larger diesels tend to have higher load factors and operate longer hours, keeping the engine oil healthy is critical. Scheduled Oil Sampling is highly recommended to be able to pinpoint

when the oil is degrading to be able to change it at the right time.

It is also important to select the correct grade and viscosity based on the conditions the engine will operate in. Over the last 10 years or so, diesel engine oil has gone through several upgrades, so it’s important to make sure you’re using the correct formulation for your engine. Always refer to manufacturer guidelines.

■ An overheated engine can lead to seal failures and damaged components such as cylinder heads, turbos, and manifolds. As larger engines with high load factors put demand on the coolant and cooling system, its critical to make sure these are operating flawlessly. fuel through the system. Through all aspects of the fuel-filling process, make sure surfaces, containers, and transfer pumps are clean and void of any other types of fluids. Ensure all fuel filters are replaced at the same time, and that OEM recommended filters are used to ensure best possible protection.

■ If the engine is used year-round but is in an environment where the ambient temperatures can change dramatically between seasons, make sure the engine is prepared for that change. In the fall going into winter, make sure any cold weather startup aids are functioning such as block heaters, air inlet heaters, or ether aid systems. If alternate diesel blend is needed for winter, make sure it’s getting switched over early enough that no fuel gelling issues will impact operations in the early stages of winter. Going into the summer months, it’s important to ensure the cooling system can deal with the higher temps.

If the cooling system airflow was reduced in the winter to address overcooling, has it been returned to normal for the higher temps that could lead to overheating?

■ Most engines today in North America and Europe are equipped with aftertreatment systems that utilize DEF. Ensure that the utmost attention is given

to cleanliness when filling the DEF tank. Make sure tank fill necks are clean, containers are clean, and not contaminated with other fluids, etc. DEF needs to be stored out of direct sunlight and in an environment that doesn’t exceed 95°F to ensure it performs as desired.

Q: New advanced engines and cooling systems are changing maintenance requirements. What should rental houses pay attention to for cooling systems?

Hatz: The most important thing to make sure of is that you’re using a factory recommended coolant. Every engine manufacturer uses a different exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler made from various materials, which interact with the chemicals in a lot of the standard coolants and cause issues with the EGR portion of the exhaust aftertreatment. Don’t assume that just because one engine manufacturer approves a specific coolant, that it’s the same requirement for all engines.

If possible, get the actual chemical requirements for the coolant itself; for example, Hatz requires coolant to be Nitrate- and Nitrite-free.

Cummins: Equipment operates in a wide variety of climates, so it’s important that the cooling system is maintained to ensure the engine continues to operate as it should. Regular visible checks should be made to: ■ Check for damaged hoses, and loose or damaged hose clamps.

■ Check the radiator for leaks, damage, and buildup of dirt.

■ Check belts, pulleys, and tensioners for wear and tear.

■ Check the coolant level and top up as needed.

To ensure proper additive levels and coolant pH, coolant test strips are an easy way to eliminate guesswork

and validate that the cooling system is operating at peak performance.

Each category of coolants has a recommended test interval: OAT coolants – 1,000,000 miles, 20,000 hours of useful life under normal operating conditions, or one year; Hybrid coolants – 150,000 miles, 4,000 hours, or one year; and conventional coolants, which are every oil drain interval or one year.

Check the machine’s service manual to find the correct coolant type needed.

Perkins: Diesel engines today are producing more power out of smaller packages, which increases demand on the cooling system to keep temps under control. Along with that, newer aftertreatment systems are introducing more heat into the cooling system that must be managed. Manufacturers have done a great job of sizing the cooling systems to deal with this to make it transparent to the operator. That being said, it’s important to make sure that the coolant formulation is following manufacturer’s recommendations.

With the additional loads on the cooling system, there is less room for error using subpar coolants.

Q: What about proper fuel maintenance?

Hatz: Newer diesel engines are much more sensitive to low quality or compromised fuel. Dirty fuel, or fuels past their prime, can cause the engine to run poorly and gum up the injectors and high-pressure pump, as well as the metering unit and pressure control valve. The high-pressure fuel systems are by far the most expensive part of newer engines and can cost an owner more than $10,000 to replace.

Poor quality fuels will also wreak havoc on the aftertreatment systems, possibly poisoning both the DOC and DPF, lowering their life expectancy.

Cummins: One of the key technology changes for diesel has been the move to super-efficient and clean high-pressure common rail (HPCR) fuel systems.

Q: What technologies are available to help monitor engine performance and manage service schedules?

Hatz: Hatz Diesel is offering its “Connectivity” services on all electronic engines, which allows the engine to be connected to the Internet of Things (IoT) for remote monitoring and predictive maintenance. This can adjust the required maintenance intervals based on the engine’s load profile and warn the owner of upcoming maintenance requirements, which allows the owner to see the engine’s operation and patterns in real-time. For example, the owner can see the DPF needs more frequent regenerations when it’s used by one particular operator or at one particular jobsite. Having remote monitoring will also allow local dealers have visibility on the engine population in their territory, making it easier to stock the proper maintenance kits and spare parts.

Hatz also offers an online engine registration where you can see if your engine serial number has any recalls or maintenance bulletins as well as log the maintenance performed and what parts were used. This allows for a complete engine maintenance history that can be viewed by both the owner and Hatz factory, and can help troubleshoot any issues that may come up.

Lastly, Hatz has a diagnostic tool that can be used on all the electronic Cummins

tolerances, meaning fuel quality and fuel filtration are critical areas for rental companies to consider.

Tightening emissions regulations have dictated the use of ultra-low Sulphur diesel (ULSD), or diesel fuel not exceeding 0.0010 mass percent (10 ppm) sulfur content. Diesel fuel Sulphur levels that exceed the recommendation will shorten the life of aftertreatment components, such as DOC, DPF, and selective catalyst reduction (SCR).

Diesel fuel needs to be managed correctly to prevent contamination, which can cause premature clogging of diesel fuel filters and premature wear of critical fuel injection system parts. Depending on the size and nature of the particles, this can reduce component life, cause component malfunction, or cause fuel system and engine failure.

Perkins: Along with clear guidance on cleanliness, newer engines equipped with aftertreatment require ULSD. In North America and Europe, most fuel suppliers have been offering this for many years.

However, it never hurts to check to ensure you’re getting the right fuel for your engine.

If higher Sulfur fuel is used in a newer engine with aftertreatment, it can lead to increased DPF maintenance, more frequent regenerations, or system replacement depending on

engines. This allows the user to view the engine’s parameters in real time, perform several diagnostic tests, and view the entire error code history. This could be vital to rental companies since error codes may be ignored and/or cleared prior to returning the equipment. So, having this error code history is invaluable when finding the correct path for repairs.

Cummins: Cummins has a range of digital solutions to help manage equipment.

One of the simplest and most effective is the INLINE mini-Bluetooth adapter. Customers with Cummins electronic engines (back to Tier 3 emissions) can view prioritized engine faults using the Guidanz mobile app on their cell phones paired with the INLINE mini. It provides critical information that can quickly be shared with operations managers or service providers. By either emailing the operations manager directly from the app or calling Cummins Care, initiating the service process is faster and easier than ever with data available at the fingertips. The app also links customers to an online service locator, helping them identify the closest certified repair location.

Perkins: Telematics systems that connect the engine or machine to backoffice databases are now becoming the norm. These tools greatly improve the ability to track engine performance. Common insights such as fuel consumption, fault code alerts, geolocation, etc., are making it much easier to maintain engines and keep them running at peak performance. Simpler tools are also available such as smartphone apps that allow you to track and document completed maintenance, look up service parts, or connect to individual engines and monitor parameters on sight.

LIGHT IT UP: WHAT LIGHT TOWER IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

L

ight tower technology has come a long way, and the rental market is slowly adopting LED technology over metal halide. And while LEDs certainly offer several advantages over their traditional counterpart, the rental decision between the two is not always completely transparent.

Currently, the general rental business is more often demanding a basic, price competitive light tower. Fuel autonomy is becoming a highly requested feature. This, combined with a light tower’s fuel consumption, has a major influence in the end user’s operational cost. When it comes to renting, the first thing an end user should do is assess the jobsite. This includes three factors: ■ The area to be covered and the light intensity (this will determine the number of light towers needed) ■ Utilization of the light tower, including fuel efficiency and total running hours ■ Noise level Once these factors are determined, the end user can figure out what machine is the best fit between metal halide and

Metal Halide vs. LED Light Towers THE LIGHTS

The construction and rental industries require durable products in the toughest conditions. In that sense, LED lamps contain no filaments, which makes them more resistant to vibrations and impact than traditional lamps.

Metal halide bulbs typically last up to 6,000 hours, but given how fragile they are and how heat affects the bulb, their life expectancy is usually much lower depending on how the light tower is treated. An LED bulb will last well above 10,000 hours at its full light output, reaching up to a 50,000-hour lifespan, while metal halide bulbs will lose a large percent of their light output within the same timeframe.

When it comes to lights, one light tower simply is more time efficient. Because they require intense heat to function, it can take up to 10 minutes to reach full luminosity for metal halides. In the event the light tower is moved, metal halides

Metal halides can also be a hazard on the jobsite. Injuries can occur if the operator doesn’t allow the unit to cool completely when providing maintenance. During that time, the machine also needs to be shut down completely to avoid electrocution and other injuries. When it comes to safety, LED lights offer another advantage since they work at a lower temperature and lower working voltage.

Say the end user is working indoors and has access to an electrical power source. An electric light tower would be ideal over a diesel option and has a lower upfront cost. Electric models also do not require interruptions for refueling or maintenance, and are quiet and environmentally friendly for applications that don’t allow flammable fuels.

These machines can also be easily daisy chained to increase light coverage.

DIESEL: THE OLD STANDARD

When working in remote locations, diesel is typically the best option. Out of the three options of electric-, battery and diesel-powered, diesel units are able to cover the largest amount of area with the best illumination.

What is LEAN MANAGEMENT & How Can it OPTIMIZE Your RENTAL BUSINESS? This article is the first in a series about Toyota Lean Management (TLM) and how lean management principles can be applied to improve your rental business.

M

anaging a rental business in today’s “unprecedented” times is more complex than ever, and that means waste and inefficiencies may have crept into your operation without you being aware.

In the 2021 State of the Industry report in Rental, Josh Nickell, vice president of the equipment segment for the American Rental Association, noted the effect of rapid change on the industry, “As an industry, we saw things that might be on a 10-year roadmap become 2020 priorities.”

The need for constant adaptation to change can be challenging, but one way to make it easier for your business is with a framework like Toyota Lean Management (TLM).

What is Lean Management?

So, what is lean management exactly?

Put in its most simple form, lean management is about eliminating waste without sacrificing productivity to improve work processes, purposes, stakeholder value, and bottom lines.

This is done in three ways: delivering value from your customer’s perspective, eliminating things that don’t bring value to the end product (i.e. waste),

framework that emphasizes a specific mindset and tools to meet a goal.

The process of 5S was coined and made popular by Toyota, and is based on five disciplines starting with the letter “S.” Those are, in Japanese, Seiri (Sort), Seiton (Set in Order or Systematize), Seiso (Shine), Seiketsu (Standardize), and Shitsuke (Sustain or Self-Discipline).

To dive in further: ■ Sort: Sort through materials, keeping only the essential items needed to complete tasks.

■ Set in Order: Ensure that all items are organized and have a designated place.

■ Shine: Proactive efforts to keep workplace areas clean and orderly to ensure purpose-driven work. This can be maintenance on equipment or dusting/ cleaning the office.

■ Standardize: Create a list of standards for both organization and processes.

■ Sustain: Sustain new practices and conduct audits to maintain discipline.

Overall, the five disciplines are designed to improve efficiency, reduce waste, and create collaboration in work flow, processes, time, and more.

Visual Management As mentioned earlier, a key building block of Toyota Lean Management is respect for and empowerment of people. Your employees are at the heart of your company’s lean management success. They are the ones who inspire change, produce solutions, and work to reduce waste. If a company doesn’t believe in the value of its employees and support them in that mission, then the processes that connect everything will break.

of your business? Visual management practice is an important component in creating a shared vision. This means that instead of just telling associates the goal, you must make that goal understood in a way that is trackable and can be seen.

Therefore, make sure to work on things that you can see when first starting your lean journey. If you see the change, you can start to understand the impact it’s making.

At Toyota Material Handling, we use problems and problem-solving as powerful opportunities for learning and performance improvement. To do this, you first need to make invisible problems visible. Start with something simple that could make a noticeable impact on you or your company, like your desk or workspace.

Another method for implementing visual management could be as simple as displaying boards that show business goals and updating them when you are behind or ahead of schedule. And remember: make sure they’re visible to all employees. Then establish a cadence for review as a team and decide on next steps as a team, creating alignment and velocity toward improvement.

PDCA Cycle Once you have identified visible problems, you can plan countermeasures to address them.

With a countermeasure in place, you must also decide upfront how you will monitor and check its implementation.

Knowing who will follow up and when is crucial in the Plan-Do-Check-Adjust (PDCA) cycle.

Just as a circle has no end, the PDCA cycle should be repeated again and again, as it ensures that countermeasures are being implemented correctly. If the execution of the countermeasure is appropriate, but the results are not where you need

them to be, adjust along the way and restart the PDCA cycle.

And importantly, if you’re a manager, practice Genchi Genbutsu, or “Go and See.” You can’t be an effective lean manager if you never leave your office. You have to go and see how your team is working and where they need assistance.

Never Stop Improving While this all may seem like a small start, getting in the habit of practicing the 5S process, visual management, and the PDCA cycle can be helpful as you move on to larger, more impactful projects.

One thing to keep in mind is that your lean journey will never be “complete.” There will always be something in your rental business you can improve or adjust to eliminate waste. A cornerstone of your lean journey will be kaizen, which means “continuous improvement.” At Toyota Material Handling, kaizen is practiced daily in team meetings, in maintenance shops, on the factory floor – everywhere people and processes are at work. This is especially true now because, if the pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that adaptation is the key to business survival and success.

In the digital age, 93 percent of customers say that their buying decisions are influenced by online reviews. And as a small business, your online reputation can directly influence your bottom line.

A

s a business owner, you already know how important your reputation is in your industry.

For many of us, we’re only as good as the last job we worked on.

What people say about your business matters, and that’s especially true about what customers are saying online.

Instead of a happy customer telling five of their friends how amazing your company is, they write an online review and hundreds, possibly thousands, of potential customers see it.

Sound great? It is. There is a downside to online reviews, too. If you leave a client on not-so-great terms, they can do serious harm to your reputation with a negative review.

But just how important are online reviews? How influential are they to potential clients? Is there a way for you to control what’s said about you online?

You might think that online reviews don’t really matter to your customers, especially if they can see your equipment in their neighborhood, visit your website showcasing photos taken by a professional photographer, all while providing the best value services. But if you have a reputation for bad service, all that isn’t worth much.

The market has changed. When people are looking for a specific piece of equipment or a rental equipment business, they go online.

If you’ve invested in your website, it might pop up as the number one result on Google. If you’ve claimed and optimized your Google My Business listing, it might be the highlighted option on the right of the search results.

But what happens if Google and social media is riddled with one-star reviews of your company? All that hard work you’ve invested in online has to battle against a bad review from six months ago to persuade a potential customer to part ways with their hard-earned money and visit your store instead.

While online reviews may seem like a small piece of the bigger picture that makes up your online presence, people are relying on reviews more and more when deciding what companies to hire.

DIGITAL MARKETING provides your services. If they’re not using Google to find their next rental business, they’re going to be using a review website (Yelp, Facebook, Angie’s List, etc.)

Half the battle is already won! They know they need the services you provide; they just need to be persuaded you’re the best company to go to. The buying decision from reading your reviews and hiring you is incredibly quick. Customers typically decide yes or no almost immediately.

For many people, checking online reviews is the last hurdle for a company to overcome before they hire them.

A recent study found 68 percent of people form an opinion of a company after reading between one and six online reviews. An overwhelming 84 percent of shoppers said they trusted online business reviews as much as a personal recommendation from friends or family. Now that’s some serious power of persuasion.

All in all, as a small business, your online reputation can directly influence your bottom line.

A Powerful Tactic to Gain Trust Every small business owner should welcome and actively encourage online reviews. Had a great interaction with a client? Ask them to leave a review online.

If you don’t ask your customers to write online reviews for your business, you’re missing out on a powerful tactic to gain prospective customers’ trust and persuade them to visit and rent from your company.

You also run the risk of letting the few customers who do write reviews have a huge effect on what everyone else thinks of your business. If hardly anyone writes reviews, one bad review has a much bigger effect than it

Before you start asking customers to leave you reviews, you need to claim your business on the main review sites.

There’s probably already an entry for your company on the likes of Google My Business, Yelp, etc. All you have to do is follow the instructions set out by each site and claim it.

Once you’ve got your profiles optimized (like adding high quality photos, opening hours, and directions to your main office), you can start directing customers to leave you reviews.

The secret to getting happy customers to leave good reviews? Make it simple and make it easy. If something is too difficult to do or takes up too much time, they won’t bother.

Give them easy-to-follow step-by-step instructions and link to the profile you want them to leave a review for.

Here are some tried, tested, and proven simple ways to encourage customers to write online reviews for your business: ■ Add prominent links on your website where customers can review you (like a link to your social media accounts or your

entries on Yelp and local directories) ■ Put signage up in your store, such as Yelp decals, to let customers know which review sites you’re featured on and where they can find you ■ Add a special note onto your receipts, contracts, or invoices saying where to review you A golden rule for online reviews: always respond. Always. Let your customers know you hear them. People like to be heard and feel like they’re the only customer that matters to you.

If someone leaves you a negative review, respond to them in a positive way. Do not take a bad review as a personal insult. Ask them how you can make their experience better in the future. If needed, apologize for their bad experience, let them know it won’t happen again, and you’ve dealt with the problem personally.

Whether the person that left the bad review will change their mind on your company is up for debate, but anyone that reads the exchange will see how professional and responsible your company is. Keeping a level-head and being polite will help turn a bad PR event into a positive advert for your company.

Getting Maximum Exposure for your Business Once you’ve managed to secure a positive review from a customer, you want to use it to get maximum exposure for your company.

hances are, you often use the internet to compare the price of a product before you purchase it. You may even find yourself on a new restaurant’s social media page, checking out the menu hours before visiting. Shoppers no longer discover businesses just by passing by, and if they do happen to see a new establishment on their way home from work, a lack of an internet presence is likely to dissuade them from visiting.

So, let me cut right to the chase. Your business needs to be discoverable online.

Studies show that 70-80 percent of people research companies online before visiting a small business or making a purchase with them. A statistic even more staggering is that 97 percent of shoppers go online now to find a local business or service.

Even if your company is a pillar of the community that has gained repeat business for years, you are losing new customers every day if you’re not easily accessible online. The world of social media can be very intimidating to a new user, but it’s not going anywhere and not as scary as you might think.

Here are three ways to bring your business into the 21st century and ensure that it’s meeting its sales potential.

Invest in a Website A website is a digital storefront for your business. These days, your customers are located online, not outside of your building. Another great thing about a website is that it presents an ideal space for a blog. Every company is trying to position itself as an industry authority, and one of the easiest ways to sell yourself as an expert is to write what you know. Articles showcasing helpful tips for your audience can significantly improve your engagement. As a bonus, you can require email addresses in exchange for white papers, which can be used for future advertising campaigns.

INDUSTRY UPDATE SUNBELT ACCELERATES GROWTH WITH ACQUISITIONS, NEW LOCATIONS In a press release from the American Rental Association (ARA), Sunbelt Rentals has announced that they’ve opened 29 greenfield locations in North America in fiscal 2021 and completed five bolt-on acquisitions in the fourth quarter leading into what the company is calling a Sunbelt 3.0 strategic growth plan.

“Our model has demonstrated for years the ability to thrive during good times, and we can now see clearly that during more challenging periods in the economic cycle, rental, and in particular, our unique approach between general tool specialty and clustered markets, is designed to deliver a reliable alternative to ownership to an ever-broadening lineup of end market,” Brendan Horgan, CEO, Ashtead Group, parent company of Sunbelt Rentals U.S., told analysts in a conference call in mid-June.

Horgan’s comments followed the results of the company’s fourth quarter and full-year fiscal 2021, ending April 30.

Total revenue for Sunbelt Rentals U.S. was $1.38 billion during the fiscal fourth quarter, compared to $1.21 billion for the same period last year. Rental revenue was down 2 percent for the year.

Acquisitions during the fourth quarter 2021 included the following: • On Feb. 3, Sunbelt acquired the business and assets of DC Rentals, a general tool business in Connecticut.

Since 2000, DC Rentals has served southern Connecticut and the surrounding area as an aerial equipment rental provider.

• On March 26, Sunbelt acquired the business and

assets of Harford Rental Service, a general tool business in Maryland.

• On April 16, Sunbelt acquired the business and assets of American Aerial Equipment, a general tool business in Massachusetts. Since 2012, American Aerial Equipment has served Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut as an aerial equipment provider.

• On April 23, Sunbelt acquired the business and assets of Ross Aerial Equipment, a general tool business in Arizona. Since 1994, Ross Aerial Equipment has served Arizona as an aerial equipment provider.

• On April 28, Sunbelt acquired the business and assets of Tomcon Industries, a general tool business in New York.

In addition, Horgan said the company already opened another 12 greenfield locations and added four locations in new bolt-on acquisitions in the first six weeks of the company’s fiscal 2022 that started on May 1. As part of the Sunbelt 3.0, Horgan also said the company expects to add about 300 locations over the next three years, including greenfields and acquisitions, with a target of having 1,234 total locations by the end of April 2024.

SKYJACK’S SCISSOR LIFTS BUILD NEW SPORTS VENUE IN IOWA Linamar Corporation’s Skyjack division has been on site with Duke Rentals, Southwest, Iowa, for a 110,000-square-foot expansion at Iowa State University Athletics’ Stark Performance Center. The midwestern rental company supplied scissor lifts to the university’s contractors to help them construct one of the most impressive college sports facilities in the United States.

“The Iowa State expansion is a fairly large project within our community, and our team was happy to be part of it and support the trades on site,” says Tom Schnetter, sales manager at Duke Rentals.

To service the $90 million, four-story project, Duke Rentals is using a range of Skyjack’s vertical mast and electric scissor lifts including the SJ12 and the SJ16 with a maximum working height of 21 feet, 7 inches. There are also a variety of Skyjack DC scissor lifts with working heights ranging from 25 feet to 44 feet, 11 inches. The Skyjack scissor lifts are primarily helping electricians, drywallers, and painters on the jobsite.

ARA FOUNDATION, THE TORO COMPANY FOUNDATION LAUNCH CHARITY PROJECT A new Community Impact Project launched by the American Rental Association (ARA) Foundation and The Toro Company Foundation was held at the Boys & Girls Club of Northeast Ohio’s Broadway Club (BGCNEO) in Cleveland on June 16.

The Community Impact Project involves both foundations working with local nonprofit organizations to give back to communities across the country through various rental-related projects. The series kicked off by helping BGCNEO, which serves over 8,000-member youth, ages six to 18, throughout a five-county footprint. The Cleveland branch’s Broadway Club is home to a robust outdoor horticulture program where

youth engage with and experience nature through a variety of handson, interactive, and fun program opportunities. The BGCNEO was revamped in a day, with projects including revitalizing a pollinator garden, creating and planting new landscaping beds, and refurbishing the baseball infield.

TVH EMPLOYEES WALK OVER 54,000 MILES IN THE GLOBAL WALKING CHALLENGE TVH in the Americas (TVH) has concluded its first Global Walking Challenge. Starting April 19 and running through May 16, TVH employees were encouraged to be active.

Whether they were walking, running, or doing a workout, all steps were captured on their personal activity trackers.

The end results of the challenge showed that over 450 employees from 20 locations around the world took 117,301,201 steps during the challenge, going 54,665 miles.

The Global Walking Challenge was just one of the initiatives from their Nudge program, which encourages employees to make healthy choices while working on their mental and physical well-being.

The goal of TVH’s Global Walking Challenge was twofold. The first was for each employee to achieve an average of 10,000 steps each day. The second was for the employees, as a group, to virtually walk from one TVH location to another,

How to ATTRACT EMPLOYEES to Combat the Labor Shortage Some rental company business owners feel that their business growth has been restricted by not being able to find qualified people. The labor shortage is severe in many areas of the country and is worsening.

Some applicants may be looking for something easier than their last or current position, while some applicants are looking for a more challenging position with a company in which they can perform duties that are not as boring or monotonous as the jobs they currently hold.

Of course, be certain that your compensation offerings are where they need to be. There may be some room to enhance them. Sometimes it’s difficult to compete with government institutions and the large corporations, but you may be able to offer a caring, family atmosphere and other perks that “corporate” businesses can’t offer.

It’s wise to try a fresh approach in order to entice applicants to apply and work for your company. Rental

companies are desperate to land good workers – and good employees in other occupations can be very desperate to find what you are offering, which is often a fast-paced, interesting, and satisfying career in a great equipment rental company. One of the keys is the presentation of the opportunity, so be certain that an appropriate amount of time and effort is invested in this vital area.

When you do get someone with excellent potential, be sure to prepare them for success and growth. I am a firm believer in the importance of the initial, formative first week or two of the education process. It sets the stage for all the other equipment and technical training to come. In my more than 45 years in this industry, I have trained thousands of rental professionals and

feel that without the proper initial introduction to the culture and systems of the rental company, the new staff member will be at a disadvantage.

The topic of the labor shortage highlights the importance of an effective employee retention program. What is being done at your rental company to keep your staff from drifting away? The possibilities and what works depend on a wide variety of factors and are rentalcompany specific.

Remember, some workers want higher level job responsibilities. When those aren’t delegated, it is unlikely that employees with tremendous potential will view their positions as anything more than temporary gigs.

Too often people with good potential move-on. Be sure your supervisors are well-trained to excel in not only the technical portions of their positions, but also the “people part.” Train them to become great leaders. In many cases, employees quit because of their supervisor, not the job itself.

Consider instituting rewards and other perks that your employees are not likely to receive elsewhere if they are ever tempted to leave your company.

For example, have some well-crafted, specific to your rental company, performance-based incentives for your staff. I believe that performance incentives can be an important part of making work more interesting and can boost overall morale as well as retention.

Finally, remember that there are plenty of people who are totally dissatisfied with their current jobs at other companies and are seeking other employment options. So, keep trying.

And always remember to compliment your staff. Even if you feel they know how much you appreciate them, it is important to say the words.
