ggregating, researching and interviewing for the 2020 State of the Industry Report, and analyzing post-ARA Show coverage, it’s hard to see much downside to the continued strength in the rental sector both globally and domestically.

The consensus among several market research firms seems to hover at around a 4.6% to 4.9% CAGR through 2026 for global construction equipment rental. And while the U.S. construction market is still expected to slow slightly in 2020, according to IBISWorld, heavy equipment rental in the U.S. will still grow by 1.6% this year.

Here are some simple stats from IBISWorld on what we might expect: • The current market size, measured by revenue of the heavy equipment rental industry, is $47.4B for 2020.

• The heavy equipment rental industry in the U.S. has grown by 2.6% per year on average since 2015 but is only expected to grow by 1.6% in 2020.

• The overall market size of the heavy equipment rental industry in the U.S. has increased faster than the overall economy.

Beyond these quick data points, Grand View Research indicates the key growth factor for the global construction equipment rental market is the ongoing expansion in the construction industry. When you combine infrastructure demands from developing countries and strength in the residential and nonresidential sectors, coupled with the shifting trend toward renting equipment for the cost benefit, it’s clear the global rental market is poised for a healthy future.

Because of the dynamic nature of the construction industry, avoiding the cost of equipment and the prospect of lower repair and maintenance costs, along with the ability to shield the business from the industry’s ups and downs, are big draws that will continue to spur rental market growth.

ELFA ANNOUNCES TOP 10 EQUIPMENT ACQUISITION TRENDS FOR 2020 The Equipment Leasing and Finance Association (ELFA), which represents the nearly $1 trillion equipment finance sector, has revealed its Top 10 Equipment Acquisition Trends for 2020.

Given U.S. businesses, nonprofits and government agencies are expected to spend $1.91 trillion in capital goods or fixed business investment (including software) this year, financing a majority of those assets, these trends impact a significant portion of the U.S. economy.

“Equipment acquisition drives supply chains across all U.S. manufacturing and service sectors. Nearly 80% of U.S. businesses use equipment leasing and financing to acquire the productive assets they need to operate and grow,” said Ralph Petta, ELFA president and CEO. The forecast includes: 1.

Steady tailwinds will support modest economic growth

2.

Capital spending will slow but remain in positive territory

3.

Low interest rates will be beneficial for business borrowing

4.

A vast majority of U.S. businesses will acquire equipment through financing

5.

Trade issues will weigh on business investment decisions

6.

Many key equipment verticals should show improvement in investment growth

Technological innovations will make acquiring equipment more attractive to businesses

Smaller businesses and nonprofits will work to complete their accounting processes for leased equipment

EQUIPMENT AND EVENT RENTAL INDUSTRY IN THE U.S. CONTINUES STEADY GROWTH PATTERN Equipment and event rental companies are expected to generate $58.1 billion in revenue in the United States in 2020, up 3.8% compared to 2019, according to the latest updated forecast released by the American Rental Association (ARA).

Construction and industrial equipment rental is forecast to reach $40.1 billion in 2020 with general tool rental revenue accounting for $14.1 billion and party and event revenue expected to be $3.8 billion.

Total U.S. rental revenue is expected to grow by 4.1% in 2021, 4.2% in 2022 and 3.5% in 2023 to reach $65.2 billion.

“We are in a fairly steady growth pattern with the chances of recession relatively low, keeping rental revenue growth moving higher throughout the forecast period,” says John McClelland, Ph.D., ARA vice president, government affairs, and chief economist.

“The good news is that the U.S. economy will hold to a moderate growth path, and the risk of recession has fallen,” says Scott Hazelton, managing director, IHS Markit, the economic forecasting firm that compiles data for the ARA Rentalytics service as part of a partnership with ARA. “However, the markets that equipment rental primarily serves are likely to see some challenges. The U.S. economy continues to slow as the impetus from tax cuts, fiscal budget stimulus and interest rate reductions all wear off,” Hazelton says.

HYUNDAI CE TO DEVELOP HYDROGENFUELED EXCAVATORS, FORKLIFTS Hyundai Construction Equipment recently entered into an agreement with Hyundai Motors and Hyundai Mobis to develop hydrogen-fueled excavators and forklifts, with development starting this year and plans to roll out the technology as soon as 2023.

The three companies will collaborate on the technology at Hyundai’s Mabuk Research Center in Yongin-si, Gyeonggi-do, Korea. According to the Memorandum of Understanding signed by all parties, Hyundai Motors and Hyundai Mobis will design and manufacture hydrogen fuel cell systems, including power packs, while Hyundai Construction Equipment will design, manufacture and

evaluate the performance of the excavators and forklifts incorporating the technology.

Hydrogen-based electric construction equipment uses electricity produced through the chemical reactions between hydrogen and oxygen as its power source, which means no toxic emissions. Compared with lithiumbattery-powered electric machines, hydrogen fuel cells are especially compatible with the power demands associated with large construction equipment because it is easier to expand the capacity of hydrogen fuel cells.

JCB ROLLS ITS 750,000TH BACKHOELOADER OFF THE PRODUCTION LINE JCB celebrated a unique milestone as its 750,000th backhoe-loader rolled off the production line in Rocester, Staffordshire – the very location where the first JCB backhoe was manufactured almost 70 years ago.

In 1953, company founder, the late Joseph Cyril Bamford CBE, conceived the idea of the JCB backhoe-loader, creating a single machine combining a front shovel and rear excavator arm. In its first full year of production in 1954, just 35 of the machines were produced and it took more than 20 years for the first 50,000 to be made. JCB now manufactures backhoe loaders in the UK, USA, India, and Brazil.

“Some of my earliest childhood memories are of watching our first backhoeloaders being produced and it’s incredible to think we have now manufactured 750,000,” said Lord Bamford, JCB Chairman.

The company’s first backhoe was the Mark I, a concept that mechanized many jobs that had previously been done by hand. The product developed rapidly, with the launch of the Hydra-Digga in 1956. The launch of the heavier, more powerful JCB 4 in 1960 was the first machine with the company’s signature yellow branding.

Cannon attributes this anomaly to weather. “Over the last 12 months to year-and-a-half, there’s been more wet weather in the United States than really any period in United States history.

And that means that [during] certain months where we thought we’d be more robust, we weren’t, and in other months [we were busier],” he says.

Most frequently rented construction equipment Which types of equipment were rented most often? Cannon says scissor lifts ruled the roost. He also shares that generators are growing in popularity, and heavy equipment still makes up a large portion of rental company revenue.

“Scissor lifts [are] generally the most rented item anywhere — but in terms of revenue, large booms and cranes make up the majority of our business. Even though we rent less of them, they make up a higher percentage of our revenue because they’re generally bigger items, they’re on rent for a longer duration of time and so forth,” Cannon says.

BigRentz has also seen a bigger demand for power items thanks to sweltering summer weather and power outages from the California wildfires. “We’ve seen a lot of our customers push us to rent items in the power sector, like generators and [other] items that traditionally weren’t rented. Temporary air conditioning has been a big boom for us as well,” Cannon says.

Technology and advancements improve construction equipment rental industry Telematics technology has transformed the construction industry.

This GPS and analytics technology enables contractors to monitor equipment usage, track stolen or lost machinery and benefit from a range of data insights.

“I think telematics is a real game changer for the industry,” Cannon says. “In addition to knowing where the equipment is to help prevent loss or damages, it feeds back information on utilization of the equipment.”

He goes on to say that telematics can also remind contractors when a machine hasn’t been used in a while.

This helps them determine whether it might be more cost-effective to turn in an unneeded piece of equipment rather than continuing to pay the rental fee.

“Equipment is generally getting safer and [is] better made than [it was] in the past,” Cannon adds. “[Machines are] more fuel efficient, which helps the environment. In terms of technology, we’ve seen a shift to more demand for online equipment procurement. So, for roughly 90% of the items we rent today, customers can self-serve themselves online.”

Cannon adds that only around 10% of customers booked equipment online two or three years ago, while 40% to 50% book entirely online today.

TELEMATICS IS A REAL GAME CHANGER FOR THE INDUSTRY.

Looking ahead to 2020 trends Cannon says he anticipates sustained growth and a continued emphasis on technology in 2020.

A heavy focus for BigRentz is integrating with any software customers already use on their jobsites.

“We’re putting a big emphasis on integration with our customers’ software. A lot of contractors work in multiple locations and use various software tools,” says Cannon. He explains that it’s important for rental equipment to work seamlessly with tools already being used by contractors, to avoid duplication of efforts or snags in communication.

Cannon expects construction equipment rental growth to continue throughout 2020. “In terms of the overall industry itself, we think it’s going to be continued growth for 2020. I think overall economic trends are solid, [though we may see] slower growth than we’ve experienced in 2018 or 2019.”

“State and local government finances continue to be in solid shape, driven by a combination of higher income, retail and property tax collections,” notes Basu. “That leaves more money available for infrastructure investment. Moreover, low interest rates make it advantageous for governments to float bonds to finance substantial infrastructure outlays.

“Among the categories of infrastructure expected to experience the fastest rate of growth in construction spending are water systems, public safety, and roads and bridges, presuming that Congress manages to address the impending insolvency of the nation’s Highway Trust Fund,” he adds.

Simonson believes the strongest public categories are likely to be highway and street construction and transportation, especially transit and airports. “The cumulative impact of several years of state fuel tax increases, wider use of tolling, voter and legislative approval of transit bond issues, and growing air travel should ensure sufficient funding to boost spending on these categories even though Congress is unlikely to approve new federal funds for infrastructure,” he says.

the stability of government funding for projects. “Institutional building construction starts, which include projects such as schools, hospitals and airline terminals, will remain essentially flat at $142.5 billion,” he forecasts. “The strength in the institutional market will be in education buildings and healthcare (starts will rise 2% and 3%, respectively). Education activity will benefit from moderate demographic growth in the K-12 population, while aging baby boomers provide strength to the healthcare market.”

He adds, “Public works starts (streets/highways, bridges, water, sewer, etc.) will increase 4% in 2020 to $164.3 billion as federal funding for transportation and water projects moves slightly higher.”

Trade agreements could ease material pricing pressure Pricing pressure is usually linked to supply and demand. “With construction starts only expected to post a mild pullback in 2020, material pricing pressure should remain a significant issue,” says Branch. “That, however, will be offset somewhat by an easing in trade uncertainty due to the agreement on the USMCA (United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement) and the Phase One trade deal between the U.S. and China.

There are geopolitical risks, as well. “As always, volatility in the Middle East can cause abrupt price increases for oil, affecting diesel fuel and asphalt purchased directly by contractors, as well as the fuel cost they pay in freight bills for delivering materials and equipment and for debris removal,” says Simonson.

OUTLOOK FOR KEY COMMODITY PRICES • The IHS Markit forecast sees material prices generally moving higher, though this is not the case for every industry: steel prices are at or past bottom.

Buyers still have the upper hand, but balance will return as time passes. A seller’s market is not expected as capacity is high and demand is still quite soft.

• Nonferrous metals appear to have turned a corner in December 2019. While the downside looks increasingly limited, relatively weak growth in manufacturing will cap any sustained rally in metal prices.

• Chemicals and plastics signal a shift, with leverage starting to push slowly over to suppliers.

This change will grow as 2020 progresses.

• Lumber prices will increase in 2020, particularly in the first and second quarters. IHS Markit advises purchasing as soon as possible. In addition, the company urges buyers to capture the price drops of 2019 before accepting any increases in the year ahead.

• Cement and concrete will have lower input costs in 2020, which will keep price escalation close to longer-term averages for both commodities.

large measure to stimuli being offered by policymakers in China, Europe, the United States and elsewhere. The implication is that commodity prices are likely to rise in 2020, producing higher construction materials prices.

“The first phase trade deal with China and the new USMCA agreement further support this narrative, since each stand to reduce the level of economic uncertainty facing various decision makers, thereby supporting more rapid and stable global economic growth,” he continues. “Issues between the United States and Iran, as well as commitments by OPEC nations to cut oil output, have helped to push oil prices in North America past the $60 mark as 2020 begins.”

The Pricing and Purchasing group at IHS Markit anticipates construction material prices to increase slightly (in aggregate) for 2020. “While some raw material prices are still searching for bottom, others are beginning to see moderate price increases,” says Smith. “We have characterized the environment in supply chains as clearly favoring buyers for the past six months. However, we believe a subtle shift is beginning. Manufacturing activity is stabilizing after slowing globally for the past 18 months.”

She adds, “Improvement in physical demand will be accompanied by a degree of inventory restocking, providing a modest boost to apparent consumption. The slow tightening in markets will become apparent during the next four quarters, with pricing leverage between buyers and goods producers becoming more balanced by the second half of 2020.”

Recent trade policy developments have proven favorable, relieving some uncertainties and supporting IHS Markit’s view of moderate price growth. The Mexican Senate approved the amended USMCA and, following Congressional ratification, the agreement was recently

TECHNOLOGY’S IMPACT ON THE LABOR SHORTAGE The longstanding labor shortage continues to place a drag on contractors’ ability to secure the resources needed to compete projects. In the past few years, equipment manufacturers have been trying to address this critical issue through technology by introducing new automation features, robotics and other advanced technologies. “Many types of technology are making an incremental difference in the cost, speed and safety of construction projects,” says Ken Simonson, AGC. While some companies have realized efficiency gains, the overall impact on the majority of current projects is minimal. “The usefulness and speed of adoption of various technologies differs greatly by project and firm type.” Every quarter, Dodge Data & Analytics publishes the Commercial Construction Index, which includes tracking data on labor shortages and different trends impacting the market. “In the Q4 editions of the CCI in 2018 and 2019, we looked at the question of technology adoption and the benefits expected from it,” says Donna Laquidara-Carr, Industry Insights Research Director. “In that study, 78% of contractors said that they expect advanced technologies deployed on site to help increase productivity, which of course would directly impact the labor shortages. “The top technologies that they think will help are equipment tagging, wearable technologies and RFID tagging,” she continues. “We also looked at current and expected use of these technologies by contractors. While we saw notable year-over-year growth in the use of equipment tagging and RFID tagging, and high levels of optimism about the percentage who expect to use these technologies in the next three years, it is important to note that as of Q4 2019, only 20% of contractors are using equipment tagging technology, 11% are using RFID tagging and 6% are using wearable technology. While we do eventually expect this tech to provide important tools to help contractors address workforce shortages, this will happen over a much longer time frame than by 2020 or even by 2022.” Technology is not going to solve the labor shortage in the near term. “Adoption of key technologies and processes will continue to shape the construction environment in 2020, but significant skills shortages will continue to plague the industry,” says the ABC’s Anirban Basu. “Because most contractors are presently very busy, there is little opportunity to adopt and adapt to new technologies and processes. Among the technologies likely to have the most impact over time are robotics, including those that can be used to lay brick. Modularization stands to be a process-based phenomenon that will gain additional market share over time.”

The primary upside risk to the forecast is the reversal of the Phase One trade deal between the U.S. and China (defined as China excluding Taiwan, Hong Kong SAR and Macao SAR). “This agreement rolls back not only some of the tariffs between the two countries but lays the framework for a broader Phase Two agreement that would lower or eliminate them entirely,” Smith points out. “Most

important perhaps, even a Phase One agreement removes some of the guesswork that has been inhibiting business planning and thereby slowing growth.

“A risk going forward is a collapse in Phase Two negotiations over some of the contentious issues, such as Chinese state subsidies, avoided in the Phase One deal,” she comments.

“Such an outcome that reimposes tariffs or brings new higher tariffs rates would mean higher costs — and, in turn, [higher] prices for construction raw materials.”

This past July, the Senate EPW Committee introduced a $287 billion funding reauthorization bill that would pick up where 2015’s FAST Act left off, providing funding for the next five years. The Highway Trust Fund is set for insolvency in 2021, so this is likely one of the very few things that gets done this year.

States continuing to step up To counteract rising construction costs and the lack of federal funding, since 2012, 36 states have taken infrastructure funding increases into their own hands. How has this helped the road building industry sustain work, and what else can they do to remain competitive?

Rising incomes help fuel retail sales and retail sales tax collections. Property values have rebounded, and there are more properties to assess and tax. Accordingly, property tax revenues are up, too.

The result is that state and local governments have been filling in much of the void left by the federal government. It also means that state and local governments have been at the vanguard of dealing with rising construction costs.

significantly. That said, Congress might consider — and NAPA would support — supplementing fuel taxes with heavy truck fees and electric vehicle user fees for better cost allocation.

Contractors should be aware that funding issues are complex. Overall funding levels do not tell the full story of how what happens in D.C. can impact the asphalt pavement market. Congress can and has limited who can spend the funds and what projects the funds can be spent on in highway reauthorization bills like the FAST Act. As more funds are shifted away from state transportation agencies to be spent by counties and cities, the mix of projects changes. Also, if Congress or a state legislature decides to direct spending toward certain types of projects (e.g., bridges or transit), that too impacts the market.

These are the sort of details and opportunities for contractors, which are only uncovered through careful, thorough reading of the legislation, which NAPA highlights in its legislative briefings to members.

U.S. Chamber of Commerce: In the short term, an adjustment of the gasoline tax is the most efficient, transparent way to fund highways. No other mechanism meets that standard.

We do believe federal and state governments must continue to study and test a vehicle miles traveled system.

With alternative fueled vehicles continuing to come online over the next 15 years, we do see a mileage-based fee program as the next step after one final adjustment to the federal fuel tax. We also believe any mileage-based fee program should be used by all highway users and not single out any industry or user as a first step.

We will work with the transportation industry, organized labor and other stakeholders to ensure we at least maintain steady, predictable federal funding. We also expect

NAPA has called out workforce development as a specific area for focus and action in our strategic plan.

We now have a dedicated Workforce Development committee comprised of NAPA members and State Asphalt Pavement Association representatives. So far, we’ve spent a lot of time on market research to understand how our industry is perceived by potential workers and by those that influence them, such as teachers and guidance counselors.

We are finishing up a one-of-akind labor market report that will provide this insight for our members.

We are also working with contractors and the SAPAs to build effective partnerships to help introduce people to the wide range of opportunities and possibilities that come with a job in the asphalt industry. And, we’re also focused on the workforce retention aspect of the equation and how to help companies keep and develop workers once they’ve been hired, essentially looking toward the work environment of the future.

To find a larger labor pool, {you} must do two things: 1. Utilize current employees to attract workers and look outside your traditional labor pool. From some of the survey data we’ve seen, many people in the industry got their first job in asphalt because a family member, friend or neighbor clued them in to the opportunities. Consider investing the time in your current staff to train and inform them as advocates for opportunities at your company and in our industry. In many cases, young workers have no idea of the long-term opportunities... and properly informed employees can help others understand those opportunities and benefits.

2. Advocate. We have seen that, in general, most people don’t know much about road construction as a profession, and that includes teachers and guidance counselors. We need to get a broader group of people aware of and informed about the asphalt pavement industry and part of that is getting into schools — elementary and middle schools, as well as high schools.

Innovating for growth While we know technology can help contractors complete their jobs more efficiently, the lack of innovation implementation in the industry is hindering growth. How can we change this?

Sage Policy Group: Without question, construction has lagged manufacturing, retail, logistics, healthcare and many other industries in terms of embracing new technologies. This has of course hindered profitability as construction firms continue to compete on a “lowest bid wins” basis. In other industries (e.g., communications, medicine), there is much more competition along the dimension of new product introductions. That’s where the greatest profitability exists.

Materials science is where the revolution will be. Communities are looking for materials that will last longer, limiting travel disruptions while also reducing the number of times governments have to turn to the marketplace for work.

In order to advance in this space, contractors need to read and attend industry events; this is the best way to keep up.

Contractors should pay special attention to matters involving the evolution of materials used for roadwork and other purposes.

NAPA: Overall, [the industry is] interested in innovations and new technologies, especially when they improve operational efficiency, worker safety and product quality. The challenge is that we predominately work in a low-bid environment, and the specifications system is recipe based rather than performance based.

A move away from traditional recipebased specification systems toward performance specifications will allow contractors and agencies to both benefit from opportunities to innovate and adapt new technologies.

Technologies that allow the equipment (plants, pavers and rollers) throughout the production and construction chain to automatically communicate and provide real-time feedback will continue to be implemented. With advancements in technology, [the industry] will continue to become more data-driven rather than depending on subjective decisions. The knowledge that will bring for targeting gains in operational efficiency are key.

Another technology that will be a game changer for industry is building information modeling (BIM). Vertical construction has been using BIM technology for years, but it is just moving into infrastructure and road construction. With BIM, the way contractors bid, scope work, and collect data for their projects will all change to allow for greater information sharing and collaboration throughout the entire design and construction process.

NAPA members have seen success through collaboration and partnership with both the companies that are developing new technologies and the agencies paying for the roads they build. The developers can help you figure out how to integrate new technologies with your operations, while the agencies are the ones who need to provide resources or an environment to support [their use].

USED EQUIPMENT IN 2020 Here’s a look at the outlook for construction and used equipment and key areas with potential to either grow or hinder the industry.

I

s 2020 expected to be better than 2019? That’s the question we are all asking ourselves as we start the new year. We must first start by assessing how 2019 turned out.

When it comes to the construction industry and used equipment, 2019 was a good year. The market was up and used equipment volumes increased. Then, as new machine availability got better, used values dipped a bit, making it a great time to buy used equipment.

Overall, the economy avoided a predicted recession that everyone was talking about in the fall. Most economists agreed the odds of a recession heading into 2020 dropped dramatically, a prediction expected to remain in 2020 even amidst an election year.

In the construction industry and the used equipment market and values in particular, there are a few predictions one can draw based on 2019 events, areas of strength in 2020 and two key areas that have potential to grow or hinder the industry.

Here’s how a couple key events and two key areas of positivity ahead present a year best summed up as one with a mix of optimism and uncertainty.

Key areas to watch The election is perhaps the biggest factor that will drive the health of the construction industry and used equipment market in 2020. No matter which side of the political spectrum you’re on, election years always bring uncertainty and are tough for the industry. Elections make everyone nervous, especially in a presidential election year. Tax laws, environmental policy, government spending are all in question as the leaders in Washington change. It’s an area that companies and fleet managers will no doubt be watching and keeping in mind every step of the way.

Another area to watch closely is the labor force. As I write this, unemployment is currently at 3.7%, only slightly up from

3.5% in the fall of 2019, the lowest rate in 50 years. The AGC of America’s 2020 Construction Hiring and Business Outlook Survey (www.

ForConstructionPros.com/21109271) reports that 52% of the almost 1,000 surveyed said they plan on increasing head count in 2020. Eighty-one percent of those surveyed also responded that they are having a hard time filling salaried and hourly craft positions.

Along with the number of workers, one concern respondents had for 2020 is worker quality, which is a key consideration when looking at things like machine technology and productivity enhancements. It seems that this will be a key factor to watch and certainly will affect fleet management decisions.

Probably not surprising to anyone, technology will continue to evolve and drive positive change in the construction industry and used equipment business. Of the almost 1,000 contractors surveyed in the AGC report, 30% plan on increasing investment in project management software, 23% fleet tracking and 22% estimating software.

technology growth, with more machines already outfitted with options such as GPS machine control, which hit the used market last year. This is a trend that will continue to expand in 2020. For the machines that don’t yet have technology upgrades, more pre-owned technology is creating opportunities to easily add it, and at an attractive price point.

The concept of “used” technology may be a hard one to wrap your mind around, especially with the speed that technology evolves. However, just because a machine is not brand-new doesn’t mean it’s obsolete. For example, at RDO Equipment Co., we rent various technology systems, either on their

own or on rental machines. As these tech rentals accumulate hours, it puts them at a better price point for those buyers, yet they’re still current systems.

Companies looking to purchase used machines in 2020 can be confident that, whether in-place or add-on, the technology will bring the same accuracy and efficiency benefits as new. Furthermore, the integration of technology into machines will continue to grow, both new and used. While I have yet to see a used John Deere SmartGrade motor grader on the used market (not surprising since it was just introduced last year), integrated dozers have started to become available.

The added advantage of the continued focus on technology is it offers a bright spot within the labor

shortage. Attracting and retaining talent will continue to be a challenge in 2020 and beyond. Technology offers opportunities for companies to do more work with fewer people, while some systems make equipment so user-friendly, an unskilled operator can do high-quality work.

first-hand, as the tech experience is a key theme of the 2020 show. I expect to see that resonated throughout the exhibitor booths, and not just the large manufacturers but all manufacturers.

A strong turnout at CONEXPO will no doubt set the tone of the industry for a great 2020. [Even with the recent coronovirus’s impact,] preliminary stats show it could still be a record year for the event. I’m optimistic that it will be [one of] the show’s biggest yet and [may still] draw a record number of attendees as companies look to invest in their people, consider diversifying to meet new

demand and seek to stay up to date on the latest offerings to make their businesses more efficient and effective.

All in all, it’s safe to say that it should be a good year. However, with this being an election year, I will only predict that the first half should be as strong or potentially stronger than 2019 for the construction industry and used equipment market.

Investing in the growing population with housing starts, infrastructure improvements and other construction work isn’t going away. Companies that invest in their people, technology, and the equipment needed to get

the job done will be poised for another successful year.

here’s no question that compact track loaders are one of a jobsite’s most versatile tools. The right selection of attachments is one aspect that makes the possible applications nearly endless. But the size of the machine can be another gateway to new business for rental centers.

Many rental houses offer primarily mid-size compact track loaders, but there are big benefits to rounding out a fleet with the industry’s smallest sit-in track loaders. The equipment opens new market opportunities and improves utilization. It also provides

This type of equipment allows rental centers to better train customers and improve safety. pounds or less make them generally easy to transport with a 1/2-ton pickup truck and standard trailer. The sit-in loaders can also feature speeds almost two times faster than walkbehind or stand-on versions and rated operating capacities as much as

931 pounds. This means getting around the jobsite or from site to site more quickly while hauling more material.

Homeowners with a lot of land or DIYers working on backyard projects don’t necessarily need a huge machine. Rental businesses can offer a small compact track loader as an economical choice that is faster than doing the work manually and safer than using a walk-behind or standon loader. This could include stump removal and backyard landscaping projects such as installing a new garden, reshaping, or installing a retaining wall.

As contractors know, new housing developments are often built with structures very close together, providing little leeway for moving equipment between houses and into backyards. Smaller equipment can often fit through those tight spaces and can mean the difference between driving through the fence gate and removing a portion of the fence to accommodate the machine.

These small machines are also useful for finishing work, such as trenching for wiring and piping.

Because they have a shorter track base, walk-behind and standon loaders generally have 25% higher ground pressure, usually starting at 4 psi compared to 3.1 from some small sit-in compact track loaders. That means less risk of a torn up lawn and better flotation on soft surfaces and mud when operating a small sit-in compact track loader. or sidewalks. The loaders not only fit in these areas, they provide more maneuverability, speeding up the job and posing less risk of property damage. In addition, some manufacturers offer compact track loaders with excellent flotation on snow, ice and slush, providing much better performance than most other tracks on the market. Rental customers will be thankful, as well, if the equipment has a heated cab.

Provide Safer, Easy-to-Use Equipment Rental houses know their biggest risk comes from inexperienced customers operating equipment, so there are significant benefits to machinery that is safer and easy to use.

One tradeoff for that open-air, no-cab feel found in walk-behind and stand-on loaders is operator safety. Such equipment, when used improperly, may be prone to tipping, meaning a higher risk of an operator being thrown off or injured by the machinery during a rollover.

The operator is also exposed with no protection on any side from debris,

branches or other obstacles. Some of the smallest sit-in compact track loaders have ROPS and FOPS rated cabs, allowing for excellent protection from rollovers or falling objects.

There’s also the comfort of familiarity. Walk-behind and stand-on loaders often have different control systems from manufacturer to manufacturer, while a small sit-in compact track loader has controls familiar to anyone who’s operated a larger unit.

The undercarriage can also contribute to operator comfort.

Walk-behind and stand-on loaders generally have little to no suspension, meaning every bump is transferred to the operator and the machine. Certain small compact track loaders feature independent torsion axles and a flexible track that contribute to more comfort and less wear on the machine, as well as less material loss from the bucket caused by bumps.

Rental centers know how common compact track loader derailments can occur. It often means driving to the customer’s site and spending half the day putting the track back on, translating to downtime for the customer and time spent that rental center personnel could have used on other projects. Easy loader valve access is another plus. Another feature to watch for is standard metal-face seals on the front and back to ensure the drive hubs don’t require maintenance for the life of the machine.

hile skid steers and compact track loaders boast tight turning radiuses and impressive maneuverability, compact wheel loaders are taking their rightful place on construction sites.

Their growth in popularity is thanks in large part to operational cost efficiency, new attachment options and optimal size.

For many projects, a full-sized wheel loader may prove too large for the site, whereas a skid steer or compact track loader could be too small to handle the job requirements. In these cases, compact wheel loaders offer the perfect combination of power, capabilities and size.

more upon initial purchase than a skid steer. But its operating costs may save you money over time. This is due to factors such as lower fuel consumption, fewer maintenance requirements and higher resale values.

So how do you know if a compact wheel loader is right for your job — and how do you select the best one? Product experts from some of the leading suppliers share how these machines have evolved over time, what options and features are available and how to choose the right model for your needs.

How have they evolved?

The consensus regarding how compact wheel loaders have changed over time is that they offer better

Improvements in visibility, cab comfort and ride quality also make the loaders a preferred tool among operators for running attachments, he adds. “[Compact wheel loaders] have evolved from a single tool (i.e., bucket only) machine into multi-tool machines. These new machines quickly adapt to augers, forks, multiple-use buckets, blades and many other tools,” says Manny Mendez, territory manager, AMS-Venieri.

A universal skid-steer attachment plate, such as found on the company’s VF2.63C, further enables the compact machines to take on virtually any job with no customization required.

“With all the new attachments — buckets, snow brooms, brushes and

grapples — coming to market, the Hitachi compact loaders have been engineered for flexibility in multiple applications and environments,” notes Nathan Little, product specialist, Hitachi Construction Machinery Loaders North America. “One Hitachi loader can utilize dozens of different attachments interchangeably. Without having to get out of the comfort and safety of the cab, these changes can be made with the push of a button.”

Versatility has been further aided by advances in the controls. Andrew Dargatz, product marketing manager, Case Construction Equipment, notes, “Case has recently updated its compact wheel loader lineup with new adjustable electrohydraulic controls.

This added functionality allows operators to adjust the responsiveness of the lift and tilt bucket functions for improved control, efficiency and versatility on the jobsite.”

What features and options are available?

Manufacturers of compact wheel loaders continue to add new capabilities to ensure operators have everything they need to get jobs done.

“Lift and tilt settings can now be adjusted with two new threeway rocker switches (high, medium or low) mounted on the side console, allowing operators to adjust the responsiveness of the loader lift arms independently of the attachment tilt functions,” says Dargatz. These programmable settings enable users

to program the machine’s response based on their personal preferences or job demands.

Options available on Case’s compact wheel loader models include new electrohydraulic controls and an E-inching pedal. The electrohydraulic controls offer automated bucket metering functionality, providing operators more precise and consistent movement of the bucket edge while metering or sifting material into a truck.

“The E-inching pedal uses an electronically-controlled inching valve to provide greater response and more control in applications where the operator requires precise movements at slow speeds,” says Dargatz. “The pedal has also been ergonomically positioned for improved operator comfort.”

“There are numerous options available to tai❹ lor compact wheel loaders to meet the needs of specific jobsites or operating conditions,” Van Tine comments. “Contractors planning to use hydraulic attachments will appreciate features like creep control, throttle lock and high-flow hydraulics to maximize machine performance and controllability.”

Both skid-steer-style and ISOstyle quick couplers are also available based on customer preference and attachment compatibility.

Size to the job and site The size of a compact wheel loader is paramount to performance. “Tight turning circles and visibility must be considered when determining the size of the loader, as well as production requirements,” Little states. “Operating

Selecting a model that offers the right combination of size and power for your needs depends on a range of variables. When choosing between available machines, Mendez says it’s important to understand the full specs you’re comparing.

“There are a lot of factors that go into [choosing a compact wheel loader], and it’s important to remember that bigger isn’t always better,” says Mendez. “For example, hydraulic pressure (gallons per minute flow) will matter greatly depending on the needs of specific attachments that require auxiliary hydraulics.

Contractors should also take into consideration the jobsite topography.

“The type of work environment and the ground conditions in the majority of the applications determine what kind of differential gear should be selected — limited slip, locking or torque proportional,” Little points out. “This will be a big factor in the wheel loader efficiency depending on the ground conditions, particularly in mud, clay or gravel.”

“All applications and jobsites are unique and have their own sets of needs and challenges,” Van Tine acknowledges. “Jobsite space constraints or limitations may require contractors to choose a compact wheel loader that meets a particular machine height, width, length or turning radius specification. Bucket capacity or lift capacity requirements will also influence machine sizing.

“Knowing the material type and density is essential to determine the appropriate machine and bucket selection,” he continues. “Some applications may have specific dumping or lifting height requirements, which may drive the need for a specific machine size or a high lift option.”

“When right-sizing a machine, business owners and fleet managers need to know the weight and density of the material being moved,” Dargatz agrees. “They need to know what size bucket they plan on using, what size trucks/hoppers they’ll be filling, etc.”

Factors such as material weights, truck height or hopper height and target bucket size can affect more than size requirements. “These factors will help determine the size of the loader needed,” Dargatz says, adding, “Selecting the various application-specific options such as axles and transmission type will more directly impact cycle times and maximize production.”

Other considerations Consider all available features and options when choosing a compact wheel loader for your projects.

For example, operator comfort can have a big impact on productivity.

Climate control, air suspension seats and ride control can help combat operator fatigue, while other features, such as rear view cameras and LED lights, may be needed to help improve visibility for certain jobs, says Dargatz.

“Contractors who perform work early in the morning or late at night (such as snow removal) will especially appreciate LED work light options to brighten their jobsite,” Van Tine notes.

Other features to keep in mind include: ■ High lift options for applications that require additional lift and reach capabilities ■ Reversing fan options for high debris applications to keep the cooling package clean and maximize machine uptime ■ Guarding options such as window guards and rear machine guards that help protect the machine in certain applications and environments ■ A boom-height kick-out option,

which can increase productivity and efficiency for machines performing a lot of repeat loader work, such as loading, lifting and dumping or stacking Dargatz offered a few other considerations to ensure you find the unit best tailored to your needs. They include: ■ Ground line serviceability to help ensure daily service checks are completed ■ Tier 4 Final solutions, such as selective catalytic reduction and diesel oxidation catalyst systems, that eliminate the need for regeneration and any downtime associated with the regeneration process ■ Other features that reduce overall downtime “It’s all about what’s easy and what will keep the machine up and not down,” says Mendez. This includes ease of operation, access to all the moving parts for maintenance, factory support, operator and technician training and the ability to easily change attachments.

Finally, take transportability into consideration. “If contractors intend to transport their compact wheel loader frequently from jobsite to jobsite, they will also consider machine weight and other key shipping dimensions for trailering purposes,” says Van Tine.

How Rental Companies Can Take Advantage of

ONLINE AUCTIONS TO MOVE INVENTORY

A

s year-end closes in, heavy equipment rental companies face the problem of turning aging assets and depleting their inventory.

As they commit capital for the coming year, they are determining which equipment to sell and how to get the greatest return on their investment.

Online auctions are becoming increasingly popular and can be used to effectively obtain the best price for used equipment. However, rental companies should do their homework as not all auction houses are created equal. Below are a few tips when selecting an online auction provider and off-loading aged assets.

Measure twice Get organized. Before you start the auction process, if you don’t already have everything in one place, put together a portfolio. Include details for the equipment you own, equipment that needs to be turned, documentation and service records and anything else that you, your auction house or potential buyers might need.

Regardless of who you choose as your auction partner, having all the figures and documentation together in one place will make the process exponentially easier.

Find the best-fit auction house When choosing an auction house to sell your assets, there are a few things that you need to know: ■ Work with a full-service auction provider that can take care of everything from start to finish. They will also take care of developing the auction listing, marketing the auction to potential buyers and ensuring you obtain your sales proceeds in a timely manner. Also, a company that conducts weekly auctions provides you with more opportunities to sell your equipment.

■ Beware of auction houses that charge additional fees. Fees for things like storage and transportation cut into your profit margin.

When choosing your provider, add up all the fees and costs and see which company will give you the greatest return.

Look for companies that don’t charge buyer fees, which gives buyers more

money in their pocket to spend on equipment purchases. Lastly, check how long it takes for each auction company to distribute the sales proceeds — this can range from 10 to 30 days following the sale.

■ Understand the technology driving the auction. Companies that have their own proprietary platform, rather than a third-party platform, control everything inhouse. This is a benefit to rental companies as those providers can deliver efficiency and velocity.

■ Keep your auction house honest.

Try out a couple of different auction houses and see where you’re getting the best price. Have a headto-head test using two auction providers, listing similar equipment on both sites during the same time frame. The final sales price shouldn’t be your deciding factor — remember to subtract all fees from the final sales price to see where you get an overall greater return.

onstruction equipment is becoming increasingly dependent on connectivity as the industry advances toward autonomous solutions. One of the technologies holding back the faster advancement of these technologies is the current limitations of the 4G cellular network.

Machine connectivity and automation are increasing the demand for a network that can reliably handle vast amounts of data while being able to connect a rapidly growing number

of machines. Some of the more important considerations with the cellular network is the latency - the delay from the time a signal is sent to the time it is received by the machine - reliability and speed of exchange of information between two or more vehicles, the coverage and data security.

5G enters the picture with speeds up to 10 times faster than 4G. The 5G network promises an ultralow latency of 1 ms at up to 500km/h (310 mph) speed, high peak data rate of 20 Gbps at up to 500 km/h (310 mph) speed and extreme density that can handle multiple connected vehicles and devices at once. This ultra-low latency also enables remote systems controlling a vehicle to react sooner, such as when braking or turning, vastly improving safety on the jobsite.

But 5G is more than just a faster version of 4G. It has the potential to bring significantly more devices onto the network. Security is also improved since 5G can allow for stronger over-the-air encryption, subscriber identity protection and reduced risk of eavesdropping.

Technologies between generations are generally not compatible. 1G was analog cellular, while 2G - including CDMA, GSM and TDMA - was the first generation of cellular technology. 3G used EVDO, HSPA and UMTS technologies to increase speeds from 200 kbps and a few megabits per second. 4G uses WiMAX and Long Term

Concept-X can be used to survey work site topography via 3D drone scanning, establish operational plans based on the topographical data and operate construction equipment such as excavators and wheel loaders without human intervention. It realizes the construction site of the future by having difficult construction work performed solely by equipment. Unmanned construction equipment is operated by the X-Center control center.

Currently, 5G is only available in limited regions and the ruggized 5G components necessary to work in construction environments are hard to source. But expect 5G to gain traction as it is rolled out to more of the country and hardware becomes more readily accessible.

The newest addition to the Barreto family of trenchers is the 1324STK walk-behind track trencher developed in 2017 as a response to customer demand for a smaller track trencher.

The 1324STK is a smaller, more compact machine than the Barreto large track trenchers, allowing it to fit in tighter areas, while still reaching dig depths of 24”-30”. The STK features an innovative new track system and compact frame design that provides

both stability and maneuverability.

The floating track system utilizes independent undercarriage idlers that move in response to the terrain. The design keeps a significant portion of the track in contact with the terrain at all times, reducing ground pressure with increasing tension.

The Barreto line of walk-behind trenchers also includes the 712 Micro Trencher, introduced to the rental market in 2010, and the RTK StandOn Track Trencher series, which was released in 2015.

which is great for a rental because they are in high demand. However, their versatility also means that they’ll be used for any type of work, which adds to the complexity of choosing the right tire for the application.

Three key elements to look at when speaking with your dealer: 1. Tire dimension This may seem simple and obvious, but there are multiple equivalences for tire dimensions, which vary with machine size or make, as well as tire technology. This can easily become a headache for rentals, as your fleets count numerous different machines. Being well-informed is key to understand the nuances and equivalences in tire size for solids, bias and radials: it goes beyond the numbers on the tire sidewall and there are many factors to take into account.

2. Tread pattern In today’s world, there’s such a wide selection of tread patterns available, it’s easy to get lost. While historically we’re used to seeing classic directional patterns, manufacturers now offer different tread designs in both directional and nondirectional options. These can vary

according to region, depending on the different or similar situations the tires will find themselves working in.

Understanding the application is key to link to the right tread pattern. For example, some patterns have been developed to offer maximal soft surface traction, while others improve tire life on abrasive surfaces. Some are even built to offer a smooth ride that ensures best operator comfort. There are also more versatile patterns that work well all over, but these multipurpose designs are not necessarily the best solution for all applications.

Knowing your clients’ use case is essential when selecting the tread pattern: renting out a skid steer loader doesn’t automatically mean the application will require a traditional directional traction pattern.

3. Technology You’re probably already familiar with them, but here’s an overview of the various and complementary tire technologies available for construction machinery: ■ Solid tires offer the most robust solution, with puncturefree operations and ultimate resistance to chunking and cuts, proven stability and the longest tire life on the market. There are also different level of quality within solid tires.

Some manufacturers even offer multiple levels of quality within their solid tire range.

■ Pneumatic tires are without a doubt the lowest-priced solution upon purchase, but they may turn out to be pricey for rentals. It all depends on

the applications, types of surface and about making sure to recommend the right machine with the right tires to your clients. Their biggest advantage over solids on skid steers and telehandlers is the operator’s comfort (and their price).

■ Foam-filled pneumatics are quite popular amongst rentals given that their acquisition cost is normally lower than solids, while they offer improved puncture resistance for flat-free operations. They can be seen as an insurance policy for pneumatics: they’ll perform better than pneumatics in tough conditions, but they won’t last like solids in extreme applications.

■ Tracks are a complementary technology to take into account, especially if your fleet includes mini-excavators and compact track loaders. Tracks have been on the rise for already several years. A proof of that is that since 2016 there are more new compact track loaders sold than skid steer loaders.

Other relevant factors to consider in tire selection What is your business’ tolerance to downtime, or what is the level of risk your business is able to cope with? This may influence the technology your dealer will recommend (solid vs. pneumatic).

What are your clients’ needs?

Are they working on soft surfaces where they’ll require a lot of traction, or are they working indoors, protected from bad weather on clean and dry surfaces? Your

dealer will recommend a pattern that matches your clients’ requirements.

If you’re not sure about your clients’ specific applications, versatile solutions for mixed surfaces may be your best option.

How old is your machine / where is it in its lifecycle? In early life, investing in a long-lasting solution is worth it and will provide a lower operating cost for your machine (better return on investment). On the other hand, if you’ll soon be retiring the machine from your fleet, you may want to consider a solution that offers performance, but at a lower cost (for example a mid-range solid or foamfilled pneumatic versus a premium solid).

At the end of the day, remember that your dealer is the best partner to answer your questions and point you towards the right solution for your fleet: they have a global vision that will take into account the different variables in the equation.

“We have both implemented e-control technology on there, which helps from two aspects. One, control the amount of applicator you’re putting down and then, two, control the spreader a little bit more precisely,” says Vogtman.

Sprayer/spreaders in general have become more popular as education has increased, he adds.

“The bigger trend there is more dealers getting invested from a channel perspective in the business, allowing customers more places from a service standpoint. And more dealers and technicians being knowledgeable about how to service the product is really a key trend that we’re seeing to help the customers be more productive and have better uptime,” Vogtman says. “I think one of the biggest trends not to go unnoticed is just more dealers getting invested in the business, and that’s ultimately going to make it a better experience for the customer.”

Still riding it out At Graham Spray Equipment, which produces custom sprayer/ spreader equipment from its three locations in Georgia, they’re seeing continued interest in ride-on sprayer/ spreaders and truck-mounted units.

“The main change we’re seeing right now is everybody’s going to the ride-on sprayer spreader,” says Donny Pitts, general manager with Graham. “I thought they were going to be a phase. I’ve been doing this for 40 years, and I’ve seen a lot of things come and go. But these keep coming up.”

Lawn care contractors come to Graham looking for ride-on sprayer/ spreaders with lots of functionality.

“They’re doing more low-volume, high-concentrate with the sprayer/ spreaders, and we’re trying to accommodate for that by giving them a way to carry that sprayer/spreader and carry the chemical and fertilizer, too,” he says.

Finding the sweet spot As sprayer/spreader technology evolves, manufacturers continue to try to balance weight, size and volume.

“There’s a really fine balance between carrying more and also what’s really practical,” Exmark’s Guarneri says. “Obviously, the more weight you have, the more capacity you have and the larger your footprint is on the turf.”

He notes that it would be possible to develop a spreader/ sprayer that has a 500-gal. tank but it wouldn’t necessarily be good for the customer.

“We know that those operators don’t want to be carrying that much weight,” Guarneri says. “It’s a matter of finding that happy balance of what’s acceptable by the customer, what’s needed by the customer and what the machine carries.”

Spreader-Sprayer and Toro’s StandOn Spreader-Sprayer come with 20-gal. spray tanks, although both companies offer larger models with spray capacity ranging up to 200 gal., and even higher capacities for granular fertilizers.

Toro owns Exmark, which in turn operates Z Turf Equipment. Vogtman and Guarneri talked about how the Z-Spray Master Max, with its 60-gal. tank and 220-lb. hopper, is one of the company’s most popular sprayer/ spreader models.

“We want to be very cognizant of weight and managing a good experience for the customer,” Toro’s Vogtman says. “We feel like we’ve kind of got to the limit of where we would like to be right now. The [Spray Master] Max holds what I’d say is the right amount to allow the contractor to get a big job done but is also equally balanced with not burdening them with getting it on and off the trailer. We’re trying to balance those unique needs. There are some situations where I tell you going bigger could be better, particularly if you don’t have to transport the unit. But with the Max, we feel pretty good about the capacity that we have there on our Spray Masters today.”

Meanwhile, the new Ferris Voyager FS5250 comes with an 80-gal. liquid tank and 250-lb. granular, Rich Clark, Ferris’ national sales manager says, suggesting that there is nothing else on the market quite like it.

 Toro has found success in the spreader/sprayer market with its lean to steer models which lets the operator control forward/reverse and left/right steering with one hand, leaving one hand free at all times.

“The standard has been 60 gallons or less,” he says. “Part of it is because of weight distribution and weight impact on the soil. If you have two machines with the same size tires on the same exact machine but different tanks, they’re going to have different impacts on the ground. What Ferris has solved with that is, we have increased the capacity from 60 to 80 gallons and then 250 pounds of fertilizer plus an extra 100 pounds of bags that you can carry out.”

The Voyager sprays in 12-ft.wide swaths instead of the standard 10, uses a vibrating agitator to break down fertilizer instead of grinding it and is equipped with a three-section breakaway boom.

Ferris estimates that the Voyager’s capacity and design helps increase productivity by about 20%.

“You boil that down to what a landscaper might do in a day and that’s shaving an hour or two off the day. days, you can now do in four days,” Clark says. “That’s a real change in productivity.”

The other key features of the Voyager that assist in making landscapers more productive is the low center of gravity and the traction, including the articulating front-end that helps provide some of the stability.

“We have widened the rear tires, widened the front tires, widened the front tire casters, moved the weight so that all four tires are taking more of the weight and distributing the weight more, so you have less impact per square foot, pounds per square inch as our competitor,” Clark says.

“So even though you have a heavier machine, you distribute the weight more evenly amongst all four tires, and then also widening the tires gives you less ground impact.”

Clark notes that the Voyager falls into the “extra-large” category of spreader/sprayers. The machines are designed for big commercial properties, schools, industrial parks or even big yards. However, the booms fold in making it possible to transition to smaller compact areas as well.

“It’s a pretty versatile machine,” Clark adds, acknowledging that it might not be the right product for smaller properties.

“Now there are a lot of people out there that may or may not be spraying or treating properties that are big, big areas,” he says. Those contractors might be better served by moving down to a medium or large size machine such as the Ferris Pathfinder, Rover or Venture machines.

In 2020, each of the manufacturers indicated they would continue to listen to dealers and contractors to meet their needs with additional equipment and technological upgrades to sprayer/spreaders and related tools.

This is great news for contractors, as it should make it easy to find the machine you need for the job.

The State of the Rental Industry

AND THE IMPORTANCE OF PERIODIC RECALIBRATION The rental industry and your company’s business model should be evaluated more than once a year.

O

ur world and our industry are changing faster than ever. In addition to rapid advancements in technology, our society — and seemingly every part of our lives — are changing at a dizzying pace. For these reasons, I believe it is important for equipment rental companies to take more than just a once-a-year view of the “state of the rental industry” and in particular the “state of their own rental company.” While the annual big picture perspective is important for reshaping the coming year’s strategic plan, a more frequent reevaluation is important to recalibrate a company’s focus and strategy, and to pay closer attention to changes in their business environment and their customer’s needs in a more volatile market.

One example of the fast-changing trends in the rental business is the effect of “next generation” customers and their preferences. Technology and social media have had a dramatic effect on how these customers prefer to communicate with rental companies. Certainly, rental companies that have adapted to these preferences and trends quickly are the primary beneficiaries of significantly more business. Being the last to adapt is a sure way to become obsolete.

Even though things are changing rapidly, it is still very important to have a formal strategic plan with specific steps to take. Too much

“winging it” can cause enormous inefficiencies and can make your business only marginally profitable.

Certain portions of your plan may need to be modified somewhat in the recalibration process but much, or perhaps most, of your strategic plan will likely prove to be wise to continue even when there are changes in the business environment. It is so important to remember that in order to achieve the high level of success that you want from your substantial time and financial investments it is necessary to prepare accordingly. It is so wise to become more efficient in all aspects of your rental business.

The fact of the matter is that no one knows when the next serious recession will occur. But, an economic downturn will inevitably return. The uncertainties relating to the late stages of an economic cycle, increasing competition, and our political leaders are creating both serious concerns and potentially huge opportunities for equipment rental companies. In my opinion, proper planners will be rewarded handsomely and those who didn’t will likely be punished.

As for the current state of the rental industry, I feel that the equipment rental industry is in excellent

shape. The industry continues to show significant strength as the economy has helped propel the need for rental equipment to record-breaking new heights. Rental business owners are continuing to invest in growing their rental businesses.

It appears likely that 2020 will be remembered as a solid growth year for the equipment rental industry.

The resiliency of our 10-year economic expansion has been nothing short of phenomenal.

I also feel that all of our efforts have “paid off ” and have been causing a significant enhancement of the image of the equipment rental industry. This image is of a positive, valued, economical resource for the equipment needed to complete a job. Congratulations to all who have invested in image enhancement.

Remember to transform your rental company into a more efficient, smoother running and more recession resistant rental business through superior planning. It is important to the health, growth and future viability of your business to have a more formal, structured way of operating the business. And, consider a well-thought out recalibration in the months to come as needed to adapt to possible fast-changing conditions.
