Making the Power Sweeping Industry Sexy It’s time to change the way the public views the sweeping industry THE GENERAL PUBLIC may have misconceptions about the power sweeping industry and as a contractor in this segment, you are continually breaking down the barrier of those ideas. From customers who question if sweeping actually does anything, to trying to change the mindset of potential employees that it's more than just a "dirty job". Overcoming the objections from both sides becomes tedious, so it's time to make the sweeping industry sexy!

Because of the relatively small size of the sweeping industry, you need to find your differentiating factor. Are your trucks the ones with the custom wrap? Does your bidding include a special promotion? Do you have a company mascot that you use at your local parades or county fairs? Some of these ideas might be far-fetched, but find your factor and make it remarkable, that way customers will remember you first.

Which leads into using effective marketing to help customers understand the importance of sweeping pavements. If you don't know where to start, Pavement has a wealth of information from stormwater management to why we need to sweep pavements. Our website (ForConstrtuctionPros.com) has a whole channel dedicated to content surrounding the sweeping industry!

If you do both of the above, then it will be easier to attract new talent to your company because there is much more to the industry than just picking up dirt and debris. There is a sense of pride in being a part of something bigger than yourself. Even if candidates aren't experienced, there are ample courses for education to either train them or keep trained up.

David Heigl Promoted to President of Schwarze Industries David Heigl has been promoted to unit company President of Schwarze Industries in Huntsville, AL. Heigl has been a valuable member of the Schwarze leadership team, serving as the Vice President of Sales & Marketing since February 2018.

LeeBoy Names Brian Bieller as New CEO Brian Bieller has 20 plus years’ experience in the industry after most recently serving as president of Dynapac North America. First All-Electric Asphalt Paver Launched in Germany The world’s first 100% electric asphalt paver is now on test jobsites in Europe. The first production model is currently being realized by KWS, part of VolkerWessels Infrastructure, in close collaboration with UMS (developer), Dynapac (manufacturer) and Van der Spek (dealer).

“The advantages of the machine in terms of durability are great,” KWS said in a release. “There are no local emissions of CO2 or particulate matter and this directly contributes to the improvement of the living environment, wherever the machine is used.

After a number of test projects this year, this spreading machine will be fully involved in KWS’s projects in 2022.”

There have already been electric rollers introduced to the market, but this is the first all-electric paver in use.

“We are very proud to participate in the electrification of our SD2500CS finishing machine, together with our customer KWS and our partners VDS and UMS.” Axel Mooren vice president, business unit pavers at Dynapac said. “This project fits perfectly into our strategic Z.ERA program, where we reduce emissions step by step for each of our products, without sacrificing our performance.”

The Road to Charlotte for National Pavement Expo Make plans to attend the show Feb. 23-25, 2022 in Charlotte, NC National Pavement Expo

AFTER A SUCCESSFUL virtual event, the in-person version of the National Pavement Expo (NPE) is now firmly on the calendar. Make plans now to be ready when registration opens later in the fall to take advantage of the Super Saver rates that will go into effect through Nov. 5, 2021.

“The virtual event went well, but we are really looking forward to getting the industry back together in Charlotte,” said Russ Turner, associate show director, NPE. “Exact dates are February 23-25, 2022 and right now the Super Saver rates offer an extraordinary deal and an opportunity to network, learn, and visit manufacturer booths on the show floor.”

On the Expo floor, attendees can see, touch, and even climb on the equipment in some cases. With a handshake and a smile, it’s a chance to cement relationships and ask tough questions.

Also within the walls of the Charlotte Convention Center, experts will be sharing their hard-won knowledge during informative educational sessions.

Presenter Wayne Jones, senior regional engineer at the Lexington, Ky-based Asphalt Institute has been sharing, updating and informing NPE attendees for more than 15 years. In 2022, he will again be back to speak about asphalt and asphalt materials.

“Small companies that come to NPE are trying to sell their product to architects and owners,” explains Jones, who works out of Columbus, OH. “The biggest mistake they make is that architects will specify a DOT asphalt mix.

Well, that's not generally what you want in a parking lot unless it's a freight terminal. I educate attendees about using the right material in the right spot at the right time. I talk about things to

look out for and things to avoid.”

Jones will also be presenting on pavement evaluation, a topic he knows well after decades of experience as an estimator, contractor and eventually head of a corporation in Florida with four branch offices.

“Attendees want to grow their business, and I tell them how to up-sell their services,” he says. “It’s pavement evaluation. For example, the owner says, ‘I've got an issue with my parking lot.’ Well, it's not necessarily an asphalt problem.

Most of the time it's water, and a lot of the time it's irrigation. Look at what the pavement is telling you. I give examples of how to read what the pavement is trying to tell them, and then use that to up-sell their customers.”

Neal Glatt, owner of www.nealglatt. com and managing partner of Grow The Bench, did a well-received presentation at NPE’s virtual event and organizers asked him back for the in-person show in Charlotte.

As a speaker, trainer and coach based in Providence, RI, Glatt will be tackling two multi-hour workshops. The first is about company culture and the second covers the often dicey topic of managing millennials.

“For every two jobs that are out there, there's only one person who

could possibly work, and that's the way the math works out right now,” Glatt explains. “People are quitting jobs faster than they ever have. Ten percent of people are changing jobs every quarter.

What people really want are growth and development opportunities, not higher wages, although they do need to make a living wage. They want someone who cares about them. They want to feel like they're making progress. They want to feel like their opinions count. The way in which we deliver that as managers and as companies is radically different than the needs and expectations of many modern workers.”

For those who are on the fence about spending the time, money and effort to attend NPE, Glatt is adamant. “If you aren't making enough profit to start paying your people 50 percent more over the next five years, or you can't find enough people to keep up with the demand for your services right now, then you better figure out how to come up with the registration fee,” he says.

“The couple days away from the office is a chance to pause, invest in yourself and re-tool because the next five years are going to be brutal when it comes to the talent pool…There is no better way to get prepared for the new realities that we are all facing.”

How effective street sweeping programs help to eliminate pollution from the environment CONTROLLING STORMWATER RUNOFF isn't an easy feat. High levels of organic and inorganic contaminants in street dust represent a source of dual risk to stormwater and air

quality. However, if localities focus their approach to target "hot spots" or areas of high concern with highefficiency street sweeping, pollutants have been found to decrease in such circumstances.

The Equipment Newer sweepers are more effective at street dirt pick-up than ever before.

Most street sweepers fall into one of

three categories; mechanical, vacuum and regenerative air. Mechanical street sweepers are effective at picking up wet vegetation, gravel and coarse sand, but are less efficient at removing fine particles. Vacuum street sweepers have gained popularity because of their ability to remove fine dust more effectively than their mechanical counterparts. Vacuum sweepers are comparable to a household

vacuum—they suck in air with a fan, collect dust and debris and then exhaust the air.

Regenerative air sweepers have the ability to clean a larger path than vacuum sweepers, remove smaller debris and release less exhaust and particles back into the environment.

“Regenerative air sweepers were invented in the mid-1960’s by TYMCO late founder B.W. Young,” said Tom Rokas, inside sales with TYMCO. “Similar to a vacuum type sweeper, dirt and debris are sucked into a hopper, where the large volume of the hopper causes the heavier material to fall,

while a screen traps lighter material such as leaves. Rather than being exhausted, the air is cleaned by a dust separator and then returned to the blast orifice of the pick-up head in a closed loop cycle.”

These sweepers utilize a blast and suction effect, which has proven more effective in cleaning those hard to reach places that a vacuum or mechanical sweeper cannot get. The machine's blast force is able to reach and clean the entire area the sweeper is trying to cover.

“Regenerative air sweepers are better at picking up smaller particles than mechanical and vacuum sweepers because the air blast and suction action of the pick-up head, which covers the entire width of the sweeper, reaches areas not accessible to cylindrical brooms,” said Rokas.

Street Sweeping Removes Contaminants Debris and contaminants from streets are the most readily controllable sources of urban stormwater pollution.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) set up the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Storm Water Program to protect the country's waterways from pollution, and the agency developed a number of Best Management Practices (BMP) that should be included in such a program.

"When it rains, all of the pollutant load ends up in the waterways," said Shelly Basketfield, Seattle's Street Cleaning for Water Quality program manager. "In terms of all the pollutants that are washing off our streets, it's much more effective for us to remove them now than it will be at some future point in time trying to clean them out of the water once the pollutants are already there. We have been able to show definitively that street sweeping is one of the most cost-effective measures we can use to protect our waterways from street runoff."

In a report, Evaluation of Street Sweeping as a Stormwater-QualityManagement Tool in Three Residential Basins in Madison, Wisconsin, released by the USGS, "Variability in streetdirt yields was not as great as that for stormwater-quality loads. The ability to physically reduce the amount of dirt present on a street surface, described in this study as sweeper efficiency, was measured by comparing streetdirt yields after a sweeper cleaned the streets in a basin to those measured before sweeper cleaning. Both the regenerative-air and vacuum-assist sweepers averaged removal efficiencies of 25% and 30%. The mechanicalbroom sweeper, operated on a weekly schedule, removed 5% of street-dirt yield on average. Each sweeper showed increasing pickup efficiency with increasing street-dirt yield. The majority of street-dirt yield was measured during April and May of each study year. So in the spring, when the street-dirt yield was the highest, the street sweepers were more efficient. Street dirt during spring also appeared to be more uniformly distributed across the street surface than during the rest of the year.

Therefore, street sweeping in spring might be more effective if the entire street is cleaned and not just the areas near the curb."

From the study, the experts found a difference in removal efficiencies that could be associated with the technology of each sweeping machine.

"Combining a mechanical wirebristle gutter broom with either a blast of air or vacuum suction appears to increase the ability of street sweepers to pick up available street dirt. Use of the regenerative air and vacuumassist sweepers resulted in the greatest reductions in average basin street-dirt

yield of 76% and 63%, respectively.

Use of the mechanical broom sweeper at high frequency resulted in a 20% reduction in average basin street-dirt yield."

Frequency Matters Numerous reports and studies have indicated there are many variables that have an impact on how effective sweeping really is. Those variables include structural BMPs, type of sweeper, maintenance of sweeper, operator training, pavement quality and, perhaps most importantly, sweeping frequency.

At a minimum, sweeping should occur in early spring (before rainfall) and in the fall after most leaves have dropped. Early spring sweeping gathers remnant pollutants from winter activities including sand and de-icing material. Fall street sweeping should be coordinated with leaf pickup in areas

with sustantial deciduous trees.

The City of Rochester, MN includes the following in its Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans, “The annual sweeping cycle usually begins in the spring. A full-city sweep is conducted to remove sediment and litter that have accumulated over the winter.

Sweeping continues throughout the summer primarily to collect litter, but also to target known chronic problem areas, such as certain industrial areas or topographic areas that serve as sediment and debris collection points (e.g., the bottoms of hills). Due to the variety of tree species and density of trees, fall sweeping necessitates multiple cycles in multiple areas to collect leaves. When temperatures permit, sand is swept from streets during the winter months.”

“Historically, street and parking lot sweeping has been done for aesthetic purposes,” said Rokas “However, environmental concerns and regulations have become increasingly prevalent over the past several decades, making stormwater and air quality some of the more important reasons to sweep streets, parking lots and other paved surfaces today.”

OWNING A TRAILER comes with plenty of benefits, whether you use it for work to haul your equipment to and from jobsites or for renting out to your customers. While trailers are great when you need them, they also require regular maintenance and occasional repairs. Without the proper maintenance, you may end up dealing with a costly trailer repair.

Know When to get Your Trailer Serviced A trailer in need of repair can be dangerous for you and those on the road with you. It’s a good idea to know

the signs that your trailer needs repair before it’s too late. Let’s take a look at some of the indicators for when your trailer needs to be repaired and some of the most common repairs you could end up dealing with.

Hard to Stop When it becomes difficult to stop your trailer, it’s time to check your braking system and axles for repair needs.

If you suspect the brakes aren’t working or would just like to check them for some preventative maintenance, it’s a relatively easy task. First, lift the trailer up on jack stands.

Then, whether they're electric or hydraulic brakes, pull the breakaway and try to spin the wheels. The wheels should be locked up. If the wheels can turn, then further diagnosis would be necessary.

Trailer tires can last three to four years or 10,000 to 12,000 miles. The tire life may vary depending on the tire’s quality, the type of roads and terrain it travels on, and the load weight that is being carried.

Can you put regular car tires on a trailer? Why? No, regular car tires cannot be put in a trailer. This can be dangerous. Tire tread on car tires is different than the tread designed for trailers, which can cause irregular wear on the tire and will blow. Load ratings are also carefully chosen for car or truck tires and completely differ from trailer tires.

What is a “load range” on a trailer tire?

The load range is the load capacity of the trailer tire. A tire’s load range is located on the sidewall of the tire. The load range is rated with a single letter, such as B, C, D, etc. If you have two tires of the same size, but one with a load range of B and D, the D range tire will have a higher weight capacity. Keep in mind that going to a higher capacity tire does not increase the capacity of the trailer.

What is the difference between a passenger tire (P) vs. a trailer tire (ST)?

ST stands for “special trailer tire.” P or LT stands for “passenger” or “light truck” tire.

Because of an ST tire’s heavier design, it is designated to carry more load than a P or LT tire. Tread patterns between the two are also specific to their applications. STs have an equal volume of air space, and LT tires are sometimes used on larger trailers due to their stiff sidewalls. As a rule of thumb though, you want to stick with ST trailer tires for your trailer. That’s what they are made for.

Do you need to balance your trailer tires?

No, balancing your trailer tires is not necessary. Trailer tires are meant to support a load! You are more likely to feel an imbalance in your vehicle than a trailer. Trailer tires are designed to support the load that is carrying, not providing a smooth ride.

How do you prevent dry rot on trailer tires?

Dry rot happens when the tires sit in the sun over a long period of time. Covering your tires should prevent major dry rot issues. UV exposure and oxygen are the two major degradation factors for tires.

when not in use. It's actually better for the tire to be rolling down the road than to be idle because during use, the tire releases lubricants that are beneficial to tire life. So, using the trailer tires often also helps prevent flat spots from developing.

But to do that requires proper maintenance. For starters, it is recommended to carry a tire pressure gauge in your tow vehicle. Secondly, pay attention to these key terms: Underinflation: Check your tire’s sidewall for recommended PSI (Max Permissible Inflation Pressure). If tire pressure is lower than recommended PSI, take note of the difference between measured pressure and correct pressure, then add the missing pounds of air pressure to each tire that is underinflated.

Overloaded: Check tire placard, know your capacities, and on the tire face is listed the Load Range as C, D, E, G, etc. The Load Range tells you what the weight capacity of your tire(s) is.

Surpassing this specified load limit can result in tire failure.

Potholes and other Road Hazards: Hazards on the road can impact the internal structure of the tire and be the cause of a blowout in months to follow.

Weather Checking: If a trailer sits stationary and is exposed to the environment for extended periods of time like weeks, months, etc., the tire’s surface can start to crack. This typically occurs on the sidewalls or at the base of the tread grooves causing weather checking or ozone cracking. If this is observed, then it's time to start looking into replacing the tires.

Lack of Maintenance: i.e. all of the above The most common trailer repair you will encounter will have to do with your tires, but beyond that, there are other common wear parts that will need to be repaired or replaced, such as: • Hub replacement • Bent axles • Repacking bearing • Wiring/lighting repair

Should you Hire Friends and Family?

USUALLY, THE TERM "Friends and Family" leads most to think of a discount -- the extra 10% off at a store, or maybe even a buddy pass on an airline. What a nice value!

In our business, it’s not unusual to hire friends or family (or both), whether it’s to help you over a seasonal crunch, because they need work, or even because you want to bring them into the business for a future bigger role. You may have just started your business, and there is no one better to help you launch your journey than a good friend or family member. So you hire them.

But is it worth it?

The advantage of hiring friends and family is that you often know what you are going to get, and that can be a benefit and save a lot of headaches over hiring an unknown applicant off the street. But the challenges can be tough simply because of your relationships.

Typically, problems that can occur with hiring them stem from a lack of communication and unclear expectations. You may be the best of friends, or maybe you've hired your brother (as I did). Because of your relationship you will often hold them to a higher standard than a typical employee. While this is fine, it can create frustration once they start to feel the pressure or, worse yet, if you think they aren't pulling their weight.

When I hired my brother, who incidentally was one of our best stripers, my circumstance was beyond work in our case. We often had issues

with him not following protocol or company policies. I'm sure in his mind, why would he? His brother owned the place! That created a real challenge for me as I was trying to lead all the other employees so they would follow procedures – while he wasn’t.

Hiring friends can produce the same situation; they think that specific rules don't apply because they are your friend. In my case, a lifelong friend was working with us for the summer season

as he transitioned to other work in his regular career. This guy was an excellent worker but had a tough time getting along with other crew members. He had created a thought in their minds that he could do whatever he wanted.

And if there were issues, he would come and work it out with me, not with his immediate supervisor.

Another challenge with hiring friends or family members is that they will usually listen to what you say, then go off on their own and do it “better.” This is likely a situation you wouldn’t accept from another employee, so it must be dealt with.

Each of these and similar situations pose a huge challenge for a leader but can be dealt with through better

upfront communication on policies, procedures and expectations. While these conversations might be a bit difficult to have with friends and family, they will prevent many future problems.

In my experience, you just have to set boundaries from day one and be crystal clear on the chain of command and communication. In my two cases, my brother eventually left our company for other opportunities, so the problem solved itself. My friend continued to work for us, but we had Adobe Stock to coach him and set the tone that he was on the same level as everyone else – and not above the law. For the most part, it worked.

But I learned that had I set better rules up front, I could have avoided problems. It’s communication – or the lack of it – that leads to success or trouble when hiring friends or family. Being able to give a job to a friend or family member in need of one is one of the best parts of the business. But if it ultimately affects you or your existing crew, what good is the discount?

GOOD MANAGERS KNOW how to balance workplace productivity against the needs of their workers, financial and productivity pressures, and regulatory agencies. This requires the ability to listen as well as prioritize work and make sound decisions.

At its core, management is little more than getting things done through others. If you want to make sure your management organization is efficient, you’ve first got to consider what it takes to be a good manager — leadership skills, communication skills and the ability to delegate tasks.

Then you’ve got to figure out the best organizational structure so employees and managers are clear about who does what, can resolve workplace issues quickly, and get back to work.

In the construction industry, you have have the additional challenge of managing workers

Here are some tips to increase efficiency throughout your organization.

Promote the Right People Don’t automatically assume your best worker will be your best manager.

Promoting the wrong person is one of the biggest mistakes businesses make in labor management. Although it sounds counter-intuitive, the most skilled workers aren’t always the best equipped to manage others. Both technical and leadership skills are important, of course, but being the best at a given job doesn’t make someone the best boss. In fact, it often reduces your organizations’ efficiency.

By taking the most productive worker off the job and promoting them to manager, you’ve just lowered your team’s productivity. In addition, the best worker may also be a person who expects others to do things the same way they do. Or, they may have ‘best practices’ in their head but not the best communication skills. A skilled worker who is the best a doing their skilled job may not be best at leading others to do it.

Having technical job skills is important, of course, but it’s only one of the many factors that makes a good manager or leader. So before you consider promoting someone to management, ask yourself what makes a good manager?

Let’s take communication for an example. If you put someone in a leadership role who has poor communication skills, what happens?

Employees become disengaged and may not be as likely to do great work.

The chart below shows the kinds of communication issues that arise when a manager doesn’t have great communication skills.

So how do you improve performance by choosing managers with the right skills? The good news is that entire organizations are dedicated to

determining the kinds of competencies or skills a good manager should have.

With over 30 years of research data to support them, Lominger and Korn/ Ferry have identified the following eight leadership competencies as the most important.

• Dealing with ambiguity — managers who can manage change, such as job specs, adapt quickly to get their team on track and work done in spite of changes • Creativity — managers who can see more than one way to solve a problem and allow their workers to be creative as well • Innovation management — managers who actively seek out new approaches to save money or improve effectiveness • Strategic agility — managers with interpersonal skills that allow them to deal with customers, regulatory agencies, insurance company reps, and others who have influence on the work of their team • Planning — managers who have the insight to prioritize some work ahead of others and to prevent bottlenecks so that workers aren’t idle • Motivating others — managers who are able to share the big picture and encouraging words to employees, adapting their tone and approach to the individual • Building effective teams — managers get to know their employees as individuals and help employees

understand and work with each other based on their skills and their unique personalities • Managing vision and purpose — managers who translate the company values to their teams in a way that helps employees feel proud of the work they do and the company they work for • You’ll notice technical expertise isn’t even on the list! It’s also not mentioned by business owners who have a personal management style that works for them. Compare Lominger’s list to that from the Harvard Business Review below, which also shows technical expertise is further down the list of leadership skills needed.

What’s at the top of the list are what leadership theorists call soft-skills — those interpersonal skills and abilities that help a person manage and lead.

So while it’s possible that your best licensed pipefitter has all these skills, make sure you consider whether they’ll be best to manage others before you slot them into the next open supervisor position. If not, find someone inside or outside your organization who does possess these skills and has basic technical skills, too. Hire or promote them instead if you want to see efficiency improve.

Provide the Right Tools We’re not necessarily talking about asphalt lutes or paint sprayers. The right tools can make all the difference. Whether it’s project management

software that helps your managers balance workers’ workloads or performance management tools that help identify which workers need training, workplace tools abound. Choosing the right management tools to help your team be more successful is critical if you want to improve individual performance and team efficiency. One way to do this is to ask three simple questions of your management team: What are our biggest management organizational headaches? Is it getting time inputted correctly from field workers, or is it scheduling to make sure that you have a licensed contractor assigned to each jobsite? There are online scheduling and timekeeping tools to help streamline paperwork and help your organization manage the administrative aspect of labor management so workers stay productive.

What catches us off guard? Is it unforeseen circumstances, like customer changes, funding issues or lawsuits?

Stay on top of issues by opening up employee/management communication channels. Maybe all that’s needed is a mobile app so that employees and managers can stay in touch throughout the day and not be blindsided by last minute issues that didn’t get communicated. Or perhaps the tool you need is web-based

video conferencing so that your daily jobsite huddle can include insight from project engineers or safety reps?

What are our biggest time wasters? Often productivity is impacted by time wasting activities, such as having managers fill out expense reports or having workers hand write and send paper forms to the office to restock their service vans. Consider using electronic or web-based tools for everything from inventory management of your supplies, simplifying processes like credit card processing or expense report tracking.

There are apps for that, and most can be set up to work from employees’ and managers’ existing mobile phones.

Once your management organization has shared their productivity and efficiency concerns with you, consider some strategic investment in software and technology tools that help them and their teams be more efficient at construction management.

Create the Right Structure Often, business owners build an organization from the ground up without giving thought to the overall reporting structure and decision-making process.

This slows the organization down in terms of who to contact if an issue arises. Or worse, brings it to a screeching

halt if a manager doesn’t feel empowered to make a tough decision. Some considerations include: • How many people can each manager supervise before they get overwhelmed? Five? Fifteen? Are they available at all times, onsite, or by phone or text during working hours?

Who should employees call if managers are unavailable?

• How many jobsites can a manager visit in a day or week? Is there a skilled point of contact onsite at each job? Or does the manager need to visit each site each week?

• What decisions can employees make on their own versus having to get a supervisor’s approval? Can they buy parts, tools or supplies under $100?

What vendors can they order from without a manager’s authorization?

• What decision can each level of supervisor make on his own without getting in trouble? Are those decisions based on dollar amounts or policy guidelines?

Simple workplace tools like a contact list, organizational chart and decision tree can improve productivity by making it clear who does what. An organizational chart would help a manager know who to escalate an issue to when their VP is out of the office. A contact list would help them reach the VP in case of emergency. A decision tree would tell them what kinds of decisions and dollar amounts they can manage on their own. These basic tools alone improve productivity so that work isn’t bottlenecked in bureaucracy and finger pointing, causing labor costs to go up and efficiency to bottom out.

Document Policies and Practices Clearly Similarly, people who don’t know what the rules, and/or haven’t been trained are going to make mistakes so document, document, document. It doesn’t have to be a full-blown government-style policy manual (unless you’re a government contractor), but make sure you have simple job aids and how-to guides to support

your workforce. Make it easy for managers to point to or reference company policies and procedures when they’re providing training or delegating tasks to employees. That way they spend less time fixing on-the-job mistakes and more time coaching trained and informed employees to peak performance.

Consider these work related examples of documentation: • A list of when and what kind of personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn on each job as well as who to notify in case of an accident or incident • Posted instructions on things like how when and how to fuel vehicles, or how to start up and shut down important equipment • Quick online access to building codes or similar documents so they don’t have to lug around outdated manuals or stand around waiting for answers • Safety instructions for each piece of equipment with access to the MSDS on your company intranet, accessible by smartphone • Start of the day sign-in, check-in, clockin instructions and end of the day signout, clock-out, lock-up instructions • Guidelines for keeping jobsite safe, clean and clear Some companies go as far as to provide a “how-to” website or app to employees, complete with step-by-step work instructions and expert videos showing how to do complex tasks. Consider having new employees learn from more experienced ones by watching short video lessons on the company’s YouTube channel. This provides a foundation for new hires and allows managers to provide coaching and feedback to employees just-in-time, on-the job. Instead of wasting hours in a classroom, they can get to work. It allows employees to empower themselves by looking for answers to common company questions, like which glue goes with which type of PVC pipe?

They do this not by managing the input or work effort of the employee but instead by managing the output or results of those efforts. They use metrics. This requires a management organization that uses the right tools to manage performance, makes critical knowledge and rules available to employees on the job, and rewards performance based on measurable results. Then they get out of the employees way, using managers mostly only to support employee efforts. Both employee engagement and worker productivity improve in employee-selfmanaged organizations. But they take a little thought to set up.

The Bottom Line These five things — the right people as managers, the right tools, the right structure, clear rules and a people-friendly environment — are the best options you have to improve organizational efficiency. And if you really want an efficient management organization that supports workplace growth and efficiency, we recommend that you do them all — starting with the right people that will help you by providing their leadership insight to do the rest.

An Autonomous Future Currently, lane departure systems and adaptive cruise control are nearly standard in new vehicles, machine learning and automation are starting to become commodity technologies, and data is in nearly every industry to optimize business – especially in the current environment where there’s no room for waste due to labor shortages and material or product scarcities.

There is a greater need for markings to guide autonomous vehicles, yet funding to implement higher quality marking systems is limited. The driverless technology for vehicles isn't too far fetched and manufactures understand that concept and are trying to adapt.

has made its way into the marking industry, a pilot program in Cleveland, OH is testing a robot painting truck.

"We have been in research and development for the last couple years," said Sam Bell, President, RoadPrintz Inc. "Currently, we are getting ready to build our first production units for beta testing.

We’ll be riding along with our beta test customers to gather their feedback, make necessary improvements and adjustments, and finalize our production design. We anticipate booking orders by next spring."

Bell, who was a top-rated auto mechanic running his own shop for 40 years

partnered with Wyatt Newman, PhD, PE professor of electrical engineering and computer science at Case Western Reserve University decided to pursue this venture from events they encountered.

"As we began to work on this in earnest, tragedy struck, a local worker stenciling in a nearby intersection was killed by a driver," said Bell. "A few weeks later, another worker from the same company was killed on the job and yet another of their workers suffered crippling injuries, all right here in the greater Cleveland area.

We began to see what the industry was up against, so

we redoubled our efforts."

Keeping workers safe is at the forefront of any companies mission, bringing the crews home safe every night. Street symbols are typically painted by hand-stencil, exposing the crew to risk of injury. This robot paint truck keeps the stencil operator inside the cab while the painting is controlled by a few clicks on a tablet screen with the RoadPrintz technology.

"RoadPrintz is not a longline striping solution, we’re aimed squarely at the transverse markings segment of the industry — turn arrows, ONLYs, railroad crossings, the symbols and markings usually hand stenciled by a team of

workers standing on the pavement," said Bell. We’re here to supplement your long-line equipment, not replace it."

SKID STEERS OR COMPACT TRACK LOADERS? There are various considerations for choosing the best skid steer for your needs BOTH SKID STEER loaders and compact track loaders offer the ability to move large amounts of snow at a time.

Which makes the best choice?

When choosing between a skid steer loader (SSL) or compact track loader (CTL) for your snow removal projects, it is important to first understand what the machines do and how they differ.

Both skid steers and CTLs are compact pieces of equipment that can turn on a dime and maneuver in tight spaces. They can also both be outfitted with various attachments, such as buckets, brooms, pushers, and plow blades.

Where these machines differ, however, is primarily in the way they traverse ground. Skid steers have wheels and tires, while compact track loaders operate via high-floatation rubber tracks.

removal capabilities, but experts cite various considerations for choosing the best equipment for your needs.

“Skid steer loaders (SSLs) have been used in snow clearing and removal applications due to their fast travel speeds, which allow them to quickly traverse the area they are working in or move from one location to another,” Caterpillar product specialist Kevin Coleman says. “With SSL tires, the contact area of the tire is small, so they transmit high ground pressure that delivers a good grip for moving snow. In contrast, the travel speeds on compact track loaders (CTLs) are slightly slower than that of a comparably sized SSL.” Coleman goes on to explain how CTLs differ from SSLs for snow removal.

“A CTL also delivers lower ground pressure, due to the long rubber belt,” he says. “While the lower ground pressure is normally thought of as a negative in this application, this objection is overcome by equipping the CTL with rubber tracks that have a bar-style tread. This tread pattern can grip and bite the snow, allowing the operator to push and turn with a rubber track

machine, much like a SSL.” He also says, “Equipping your CTLs with a bar-style tread pattern allows the track to grip the snow much better than the traditional block-style tread, and delivers great stopping, turning, and pushing performance. In fact, the CTL platform has its other advantages in snow clearing and removal applications. The long undercarriage of a CTL gives this platform an advantage in stability when performing tasks like loading or stockpiling the snow.”

he explains. “This is done using a plow blade, a larger snow push or most often, a bucket. Snow pushers are wider and taller than a bucket, so they are capable of clearing more area quickly.”

Ryan says this large-area-clearing ability leads to loaders with snow pusher attachments commonly being used to clear parking lots. But he adds, “[Snow pushers] can’t be used to lift, carry, or dump the snow, so they require enough space to pile the snow on-site.”

“A second common snow application is to sweep the snow using a broom attachment. Brooms work well in light snow and long-run applications because they continuously move snow without the need for all the forward/ reverse cycles that pushing snow requires,” he adds.

Lastly Ryan says the final common snow removal application is with a snow blower attachment.

“This configuration excels in moving heavier snow from long-run situations, however; it is most often the slowest of the three methods for snow removal,” he says.

When asked which machine he recommends most highly for snow removal, Ryan says in general, he believes the SSL is the better machine for snow removal, as many of its attributes provide superior performance. He notes that SSLs are often faster, less expensive, and lighter weight than CTLs. Their tires may also hold up better to wear than the tracks on CTLs. “That being said we have seen more and more CTLs being used in snow removal,” he says. “This is due in part

Ryan also notes the biggest factor as to why more track loaders are being used in snow applications is due to operators’ recognition of CTL performance in non-snow applications. “If a business or operator is going to buy a machine, they usually buy the machine that provides the best performance during the nine months of the year when most of North America isn’t using machines for snow removal,” he says. “ “Even in some of the more northern

areas of Canada, I’ve seen that track loaders are very commonly found in snow applications.”

Coleman echoes many of these sentiments, touting the impressive snow clearing abilities of both machines.

“One of the shared benefits is the versatility of the SSL and CTL platforms as it pertains to snow clearing attachments,” he says. “These machines have the operator comfort and hydraulic capability that allows them to be connected to, and efficiently operate, a wide range of attachments, such as snow wings, angling plows, multi-v plows, straight plows, snow blowers and snow pushes.”

He adds that both the Cat SSL and the CTL platforms are equally adept for many of the aspects of snow clearing and removal. “Both the SSL and CTL have the benefit of being extremely nimble and maneuverable, especially when compared to larger wheel loader machines,” Coleman notes.

“The SSL or CTL machines are also very transportable, making them a great tool for snow clearing and removal applications,” he says. “In addition, both platforms feature great sight lines to the attachment, the tires or tracks, and the sides of the machine, allowing the operator to work confidently in these tight, challenging conditions. As a complement to the front and side visibility, an integrated rear-view camera enhances rearward visibility for the hard-to-see areas behind the machine.”

Coleman also points out that choosing the right equipment for your needs comes down to preference and all-season applications.

“Machine utilization is also a contributor to which platform (SSL or CTL) may be preferred for snow clearing,” he says. “As an example, customers that work in landscaping applications in the summer may also be involved in snow clearing or removal in the winter and would likely [already] own a CTL. [At the same time], a paving customer may prefer to utilize their existing SSL assets for snow clearing.”

Tips for SSL and CTL Users Coleman and Ryan each offered tips for owners, renters or users of skid steer loaders and compact track loaders.

Coleman explains that utilizing owned machinery may require some planning when transitioning from one season to another.

“For a SSL owner, this may require the exchanging of traditional SSL tires for a more aggressive snow tires,” he says. “In contrast, a CTL customer may be able to avoid the need for seasonal changes by taking advantage of a track

with bar-style tread that provides an all-season track solution.”

Not only does the bar tread grip the snow for clearing or removal applications, it also provides low ground disturbance for warmer weather grading and landscaping applications.

Ryan adds, “In general, when working on paved surfaces, operating using wide turn angles and y-shaped turns will help prolong either track or tire life. [Users should also] remember that a single attachment may not be the best solution for your snow removal needs.”

“When a business earns its revenue by the amount of area they can clear per hour, or number of properties they can maintain, it may make sense to have two attachments available so you have the right tool for the right conditions, your local attachment manufacturer can usually provide time-study data to help you make the right buying decision,” he says.

Either style of machine will get the snow off the pavement. The final decision comes down to how you use the machine when it’s not snowing and determining

From the first line of defense for maintaining water quality to autonomous sweepers, the industry is fast-changing in a variety of ways

by Ranger Kidwell-Ross Power sweeping is fastchanging in a variety of ways. Most important of these, given the rapid pace of climate change, centers on the fact that street sweeping has now been shown definitively to be the first line of defense for maintaining water quality given pavementbased runoff. Exhaustive recent studies by Minnesota and Florida both show, conclusively, that pavement-based phosphorus can be removed by a sweeper for up to 150 times less than by the next most viable manner, which is at the endof-the-pipe with catch basins.

Based on solid data both states are, or soon will be, offering MS4 municipalities significant credits based on their respective studies. When municipalities in those states realize the added value street sweeping provides in terms of permit compliance, there's little doubt that street sweeping frequency – and along with it pollutant removal – will increase across the board. The data indicate that similar financial incentives for increased sweeping should be enacted across the U.S.

and around the world.

Another fast-moving technology involves self-driving sweepers. Bucher recently had its all-electric, self-driving CityCat 2020ev model approved for public road use in Singapore.

Finland’s Trombia Technologies has a model that sweeps autonomously and without using water for dust suppression.

The company’s ‘Trombia Free’ sweeper, due to soon enter the U.S. marketplace, needs no operator and significantly reduces CO2 carbon emissions during operation. And, at least one startup is testing an innovative autonomous retrofit system for Isuzu parking lot sweeper chassis.

In America, Global, Bucher and Elgin now all offer electric and/or hybrid sweeper models and Global even has one powered by hydrogen fuel cell technology. More such models are available in Europe as well as are on the horizon in the U.S. There’s an old adage that “the only constant is change.”

As time goes on, I predict that will be an increasingly apt way to describe the power sweeping industry.

PCTC Continues to Adapt to Change Announcing updates and changes to the organization From labor shortages to supply chain challenges, we are constantly reminded of the changing dynamics of our landscape. To adapt to these changes, organizations continue to rely on longstanding practices that are core to their identity while also introducing innovative elements to their processes that position themselves differently in a new era.

Industry leaders, who are also members of the Pavement Coatings Technology Council (PCTC), led the way for change to reflect the environment. Just nine months after long-time leader Anne LeHuray, an industry icon and nationally recognized scientist, retired as Executive Director, the organization continued to reinvent itself while retaining those elements that continuously support the industry.

Of the many benefits PCTC offers to the pavement coatings industry is LeHuray’s expertise. More specifically, her tenure as an expert in polyaromatic hydrocarbons, commonly referred to as PAHs, a class of chemicals found in some everyday products but also found in coal, crude oil and gasoline. To ensure PCTC continues its legacy of providing scientifically backed information, leadership decided to contract LeHuray as its scientific officer for the foreseeable future.

In addition to retaining LeHuray, PCTC hired Brian Riggs as its Executive Director.

While Riggs does not come from a scientific background, his history in assisting professional societies in marketing, brand development and communications is a perfect complement to the scientifically oriented Council. Together, Riggs and LeHuray will mine original and primary content to develop a public facing awareness campaign that both

educates and informs.

To accompany this shift in approach, PCTC also recognized the need for its members, who are spread out across the U.S. to have a place where they could readily access information, exchange best practices and connect with scientists, contractors, and industry stakeholders.

Their new digital headquarters can be found (pctc.memberclicks.net). This allows all stakeholders an opportunity to access the files that have catapulted PCTC as the thought leader in the industry.

Finally, no transformation can be complete without a new look and feel. The new PCTC logo was adopted shortly after the transition. As our industry continues to evolve, so must the organization that represent our stakeholders.

Prepare for the day using this handy acronym FOR YEARS, I’VE observed crew leaders who are effective from the start of the day to the foreman who just seems to fight through the day. Both examples of foremen can be almost brilliant in terms of the knowledge of pavement maintenance issues, materials, equipment, etc., but many still fall short of completing their potential by how they prepare each day.

To address these observations, many years ago I created a short and easy to remember acronym called T.E.M.P. Let me break this down for you…it’s easy to remember and to use. The following questions should be viewed through the foremen “paradigm” of preparation.

T = TOOLS “Do I have every tool my crew will need to perform the work today…AND… are the tools in good working order?” (i.e. Broken rake stick; broken shovel; wand tip is broken or needs replaced, etc.) Too many crews do not inspect their tools for the “state of use” and thus, use other tools not designed for the task, or worse, purchase tools at a contractor’s supply house, often for much more than you would normally pay.

E = EQUIPMENT “Do we have all of our equipment safely tied down?

Have we performed daily maintenance checks on the equipment (before we leave the yard)? Do we have the right equipment for today’s job? Do we need to rent a piece of equipment?” For many contractors trying to lease or rent equipment because their crew has not been practicing consistent preventive maintenance, good luck finding equipment right now. Every contractor in the USA is looking for available equipment, CDL A drivers, craftsman, etc.

M = MATERIALS “Do we have our materials scheduled? What is the back-up plan if Plant “A” suddenly shuts down? If you’re working out of town, do you have at least two material plant options? What are the locations, contact

numbers, etc.?” Some contractors handle all of this for their foremen. If you don’t, you need to provide all the needed information for your foreman or you greatly impede their speed of completing projects on time.

P = PEOPLE “Do I have a full crew today?

Who is missing? How will I position my workers today?

What are our goals for the day?” If employees are our number one assets then we need to be more engaging and informed aware of their readiness, their motivation, and their focus on safety, quality and production.

Taking your crew’s T.E.M.P. represents the basics of daily preparation. Sure, there are more challenging things to address and think through, but I have found that many pavement maintenance crews are still showing up to job sites unprepared,

often without the right equipment or tools, and with no idea of what they are doing that day. Most of the daily issues that challenge foreman can be eliminated, at least greatly reduced, if the foreman would start off each new day with taking the T.E.M.P. of their crew!
