fter what seemed like an eternity, in-person events are back in full force. Contractors, manufactures and attendees alike came to Charlotte, NC for the 2022 National Pavement Expo February 23-25. Since the event last year was virtual, the enthusiasm could be felt, especially on the first day with the annual preview night. Contractors were eager to kick the tires, check out the equipment advancements, network and learn.

Here's some of what attendees saw.

ON THE SHOW FLOOR The tradeshow floor offered tools, materials, equipment and services for contractors involved in all segments of the paving and pavement maintenance industry.

Sweeping: • Boschung displayed its new, all-electric sweeper, Urban-Sweeper S2.0, includes an autonomous driving feature.

• To aid municipalities and contractors addressing the driver shortage, Elgin Sweepers featured a new non-CDL Elgin Eagle machine.

• First time NPE exhibitor ODRA brought its MT4H mechanical broom sweeper.

Asphalt Paving & Compaction • Dynapac North America showcased the F1250 CS Cart Path Paver which can be operated by remote control.

• Weiler broadened their paver product line to branch out to meet needs of the contractor showcasing the 385B, 285, 265, P195, P65 and P395 asphalt pavers.

Old Dominion Brush Company (ODB) displayed their high quality, cost-effective street sweeper brooms.

• LeeBoy brought seven pavers to the show, including the Raised on Blacktop iconic machine. They also showcased the three wheeled NB25 broom which is ideal for smaller contractors or rental dealers.

• In the Astec booth, attendees could see all the equipment rebranded with the new logo and color palette.

• Machine attachments were also on display. These versatile tools can help contractors provide added services to their customers. This is the case for the offset vibratory roller from Road Widener to provide additional compaction on sloping shoulders, ditches and other hard to reach areas.

Striping • Battery powered equipment made an appearance in the Graco booth. The LineLazer ES 500 which is equipped with a 9 amp hour Dewalt battery, run for 5-gallons on one battery.

• Epic Solutions demo'd their TA5000 Tape Applicator the SIDE WINDER. The TA5000 is a functional automated tape applicator that automatically cuts tape without having to stop. The programmable timing system eliminates having to measure out patterns - Just get lined up at your starting point hit the button and go.

CONFERENCE & EDUCATION Contractors gathered in educational session to learn or refresh their skills and the conference program provided plenty of opportunities for contractors to exchange information and get their questions answered.

Session Highlights: Neal Glatt provided an interactive session about managing millennials in the workplace. He shared knowledge to help managers craft a new outlook and new approach to provide this generation with purpose, which drives retention.

During the Improving Asphalt Mat Quality session hosted by John Ball, he emphasized the importance tack, paint lines and compaction.

Mike Shereck created a welcomed conversation and discovery session about leadership. Leaders lead in the creation of purpose, vision and mission of the organization while managing the environment they are in.

Diversifying services to be a resource to customers can be a smart business move for your company

C

ontractors are diversifying services to become a one-stop shop for their customers, which isn't new, this has been happening for many years. If you are already performing paint striping services on parking lots or municipal work, the natural next step would be to include thermoplastic offerings to reach a broader customer base looking for a more durable, longer-lasting marking.

Thermoplastic markings, when applied to pavement, is a molten material created from melting either plastic granules or a pre-mixed material that is heated, cooled and formed into a block or powder which is then melted before application. The material is heated to 400°F - 425°F before it is applied to the pavement.

"It's one of those things that everything has to be lined up correctly," said Josh Ross Schnelting, striping manager for Alpha Paving. "The pavement needs to be at a certain temperature which typically you want to see at 50 degrees and rising.

Your material needs to be a certain temperature too, otherwise it comes out and big clumps. It looks like cake batter."

The learning curve with thermoplastic is fairly easy, especially if the contractor is already in the pavement marking segment. The material must reach the proper heat before application. Also, like Schnelting said, contractors should consider the surface temperature of the pavement.

Applying thermoplastics at proper application temperature 400°F+ is one of the most critical factors affecting the bond to the pavement. If the road temperature is too cold, the material may fail and not adhere properly.

These lines can be thicker than a paint line, increasing the likelihood of removal by snow plows when the blade comes in contact with the thermoplastic marking, thus thermoplastic tends to be used more in warmer environments.

However, there has been advancements to feather the line's leading edge making the technology more attractive in colder climates.

EQUIPMENT Thermoplastic markings require specialized equipment to heat and hold the hot material before being placed on pave-

ment which can be applied by handwork or long line applications.

Walk-behind handliners are small, portable pieces of equipment that hold the molten material and maintain it at the proper temperature long enough to let the operator apply it. Handliners are pushed by the operator and are made of either steel or aluminum. Some manufactures are creating efficiencies like ride-on attachments that can either connect to the handliner or kettle, or have built ride on stripers to help drive productivity.

Walk-behind handliners can weigh between 275 and 300 pounds, manufacturers suggest testing them out before buying. Also, set up a test drive for any

long line or ride on stripers to understand what the machines capability.

For contractors doing mostly intersections, parking lots or smaller jobs, a handliner will be the equipment choice. Handliners are preferred for jobs requiring detail work where a larger, long line trucks will not be mobile enough to achieve the desired details.

Pre-melting kettles are essential as well. The kettle is used to heat the thermoplastic material to the required temperature before application. Some trucks or ride on stripers have an integrated pre-melting kettle.

Pavement surfaces must be clean, debris free and dry before application as moisture on the surface can decrease the bonding ability.

Keep the die system, the container the thermoplastic material flows through to reach the pavement surface, in mind as well. Different sizes of dies are available depending on the mil thickness of the material being applied.

Know which size you'll need so you're not purchasing more than necessary or the wrong size.

to have scheduled maintenance intervals as well. Draining the kettle daily, remove excesses material from the die and checking the burners should be done on a regular, if not daily basis.

SAFETY FIRST AND FOREMOST Just like any other service, training and safety measures for crew members are

important. Especially when working with dangerously hot materials and equipment in thermoplastic applications.

• Operators should wear proper clothing; long-sleeve shirts, long pants, hard-soled shoes, hat, heatresistant gloves. protect workers from any splash back that may occur.

• Keep a fire extinguisher readily available and train all crew members on its proper use.

• Have a first aid kit near, and know how to treat burns.

• Add small amounts of material at regular intervals. Try not to drop an entire bag or block into hot material already in the kettle. Doing so will cause the molten material to splash up and in some cases out.

• Try not to leave kettle or application unattended when lit.

• Do not leave burners on when the kettle is empty.

• Don't overheat material, overheating can cause fumes to ignite and cost more because the product can become scorched and unusable.

• Operators need to understand the operation of the equipment before attempting to perform any striping or maintenance. Read the operator's manual fully and familiarize yourself with the thermoplastic equipment and striping process.

Before diving into thermoplastic application, make sure you and your crew are well educated on the product and the market. It is important to know the acceptable application methods in your area. Also, understand who your competition is. Be sure to take the time to practice and get the feel for it as well as understand the equipment and the process.

"Anyone that wants to get into it has to be patient," said Schnelting. "If you have no experience, it will take a little research and due diligence to try to find your best price. But once you've figured out how long it takes to do a job and the temperature factors that go along with thermoplastic, it will become natural and you can successfully complete jobs you might have previously sub contracted out." ■

Can Robots Simplify Parking Lot Striping?

Pre-marking can be a tedious and timeconsuming task, but technology is advancing to help striping contractors get more work done, faster

A

s contractors prepare for work on the more than 173,000 miles of United States roads that are in poor repair and as private work from parking lot construction and maintenance holds firm even as labor is in short supply, technology capable of streamlining pavement striping and marking will become even more attractive.

Striping of roadways requires not just the high-temperature application of thermoplastic, but a pre-lining process commonly completed by a surveying team charged with identifying the exact position of lane markers, generally using a total station. Automated solutions are coming to market, including the TiyMobileRobot product line for roadways and parking lot pre-lining and turf line marking. These automation tools use either cell connectivity or an on-board GNSS device to orient the robot geographically as it sprays a paint line that delineates the precise position for permanent marking.

The TinySurveyor and TinyPreMarker robots integrate with global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receivers from major

manufacturers including Topcon, Trimble and Leica. The TinySurveyor, unlike the TinyPremarker is not sold with its own GNSS receiver, and integrates with external total stations for positioning data including height measurements. A prism mounted beneath the TinySurveyor’s GNSS antennae enables accuracy tolerances of less than one inch. The robots mark points with a standard aerosol can, making fast work of road center lines or layout of sites like solar parks. Using two points for a line or three points for an arc, the robots have application premarking lines on roadways and survey site staking.

The robots are only one component in an overall solution that also includes a tablet and cloud application that

controls and can lock the robot.

The cloud application also enables TinyMobileRobots to access and troubleshoot robots for their customers, and the tablet controller can be used to manually operate the robots through a Bluetooth connection. The robots do their own edge computing work to automate their precise positioning capabilities—critical in applications where they may not be able to access a cellular network. This heavy lifting is handled by the Robot Operating System (ROS) framework, which gives software access to hardware resources, provides the drivers required to run hardware and enables multiple processes to coordinate across the different pieces of hardware and components that comprise a robot. GNSS location and layouts downloaded from the cloud or installed through a USB port give the robots the information they need to navigate.

PARKING LOT PROBLEMS Beyond roadways, the robots have applications in parking lots as well as in indoor line marking applications, according to TinyMobileRobots CEO Jens Peder Kristensen. Parking lots, however, present special challenges for automation.

“In parking lots, the major challenge for pre-marking/laying out is that GPS accuracy is reduced by trees and buildings,” Kristensen said. “Working with an accuracy below one-half inch is very demanding for the GPS technology and requires that there is a certain distance to buildings and trees. The problem stems from multipath. Signals from GPS are reflected by houses and trees, and the reflection can reduce accuracy significantly.”

Other challenges stem from a lack of accuracy of curb placements in parking lots, which then conflict with the geolocation data the robot uses to orient.

“Before the layout can be done, the landscape contractors install the curbs and the small trees for the area,” Kristensen said. “In this case, the trees

are so small it does not matter, but the curbs matter. And the landscape contractor does not care so much about half-inch accuracy. This makes the use of the CAD drawing for the robot pre-marking/layout difficult, because the high efficiency of the robot is only achieved if you have correct CAD drawings that reflect actual location of the curb.”

Contractors accepting projects to mark pavement indoors, for safety lines in large warehouse or production facilities or in a construction environment to mark wall locations, can also leverage this technology.

Apart from pre-marking for lines to be painted later, the robots can be used to mark height curves in support of floor leveling processes. But again, the use case requires changes to the hardware.

“In the indoor cases, the GPS will not work, so customers typically use a robotic total station,” Kristensen said.

“The robotic name of the robotic total station comes from the fact that it automatically follows the robot around and thereby automizes the work of a person. The combination of the robot and the robotic total station allows for very accurate indoor layouting.”

ALL IN ONE PROCESS TinyMobileRobots has a separate product line that marks parking and sports field lines on turf grass, but has not pursued line painting on pavement.

Kristensen points out the issues are different in parking lots versus public roadways.

“Final marking with the robot has two challenges,” Kristensen said. “One is the problem with trees and buildings.

If the premarking/layout is disturbed by trees and houses, you can easily see it with your eyes and you can correct it before the final marking. Furthermore, the paint used for final marking is often thermoplastic that needs to be heated to 400° F. This cannot be done with a small robot.”

Despite these challenges, work is progressing towards an automated approach to final line marking.

RoadPrintz Inc. and Case Western Reserve University have collaborated on a prototype pavement marking vehicle to demonstrate that the technology can stripe cheaper, faster and with significantly less risk to road-workers.

For parking lots, an Estonian company has developed an automated line marking robot last year nailed down $775,000 to help develop its line of parking lot and road marketing robots. 10Lines claims on its web site the robots stripe parking lots seven times faster than other means with no premarking. The company has not yet announced availability or distribution in the United States. ■

Advances in compaction technology are happening very quickly to help adapt to the changing demands on our equipment and our roadways

U

pgrading your fleet is an important way your company can stay competitive. With new equipment, comes new technologies and enhancements that help members of your crew work more comfortably and more efficiently.

When it comes to asphalt rollers and road compaction, technology has been increasing steadily for years, improving performance and increasing the value of these machines on the jobsite. Rollers have been adapted to keep up with regulations, operator demand and with the ways our roads are being designed.

"Innovation is an ongoing process on with our equipment," Tim Kowalski, HAMM application support manager with Wirtgen America says. "We're always listening to contractors and changing our machines based on what they are saying and what their needs are. We're also changing the rollers to support the mix designs, the traffic loads, the type of materials, the oils that we're using and everything else that is changing.

"In order to get the same kind of performance of the mixes that we're developing and putting out there on the roadways, we're not going to be able to compact them the same way," Kowalski

continues. "So understanding that we have to think a little bit more outside of the box of how we're going to develop a roller to give us better compaction, faster compaction, longer lasting roads is what we're continually working on."

INTELLIGENT COMPACTION AS STANDARD One technology that has been progressing over the years is Intelligent Compaction (IC). These systems feature an accelerometer-based

measurement system, as well as GPS, infrared temperature sensors, and an on-board computer that provides real-time compaction information to the operator. There have been many advancements in IC over the past few

years aimed at reducing the guesswork in the paving process but many contractors still have not adopted this technology. As a result, manufacturers are continually evolving these systems to meet contractor needs.

"Contractors want things simple," Kowalski says. "Engineers have a tendency to say, well, if I touch these 10 buttons to do one thing, that's great. But contractors want to touch one button that does 10 things. Our operations need to be that simple and intuitive for the operators if we want them to use the equipment effectively."

What is evolving then is the idea of "Sophisticated Simplicity" to help contractors with their jobsite demands and need for efficiency when using the machine.

"The rollers are getting more and more sophisticated and we want to make it more simple for the operators to operate while also helping them to take the guess work out of compaction." Vijay Palanisamy, director of product marketing and communications at Dynapac North American says. "For example in our

large asphalt rollers we have standard intelligence built in for asphalt temperature and impact spacing which provides basic intelligence for operators without lot of investment. This allows operators to compact at the right speed and also right temperatures."

With the addition of the Dyn@ lyzer intelligent compaction system, the operator can get the full benefit of pass count, mapping of the job site and also stiffness readings which can be co-related to density.

"This further helps both contractors and DOT’s to make sure the roller operator has completed the job at hand with specific boundary conditions and providing continuous feedback while performing the task," Palanisamy continues. "This is what we call as Sophisticated Simplicity. The technology sophistication simplifies the operation of the roller."

Even with simplified controls, these systems are seen as complicated and adoption doesn't happen until necessity;

when a contractor is required to use the technology on a project or when circumstances demand it.

"Many customers have been hitting their density numbers for years because they have an experienced crew and there is consistency in their process," Brian Nagel, global sales consultant for technology & utility compactor at Caterpillar, Inc. says. "When one of those or one of the many other factors change, they could go from hitting density to missing it which could be

very costly. A few misses in a paving season usually has that customer asking what they can do to prevent it and one solution is intelligent compaction. When a roller operator can start visualizing what they are doing, changes can be made to improve results.

Contractors may need help getting started on the path to full IC. "Many contractors still are not using intelligent compaction unless their project or DOT is mandating them to do so," Mark Eckert, global product manager at Volvo says. “This is mainly because contractors are still unsure of the benefits and the systems have notoriously been seen as difficult to use and expensive to implement. We recently launched Compact Assist Start to help customers take the first step into Intelligent Compaction. It's easy to use and with no setup required, it includes pass mapping and temperature mapping

functionalities, providing the operator with real-time data about how the job is progressing and is cheaper than a full blown IC system."

Another added benefit of IC? The "CYA" factor. Many projects are going to begin to require pass mapping documentation for density and IC gives contractors the assurance they completed the correct number of passes on each job, while also helping with training and advancement.

"The documentation side of things can also be used to evaluate what was planned for a job and what was done to identify areas for improvement," Nagel adds. "This might mean training for roller operators on proper turnouts to ensure coverage in transition areas or the temperature maps might show inconsistency in paver speed which can lead to inconsistent density. By providing more information to our

customers, it allows them to make better decisions and be more consistent with their final product."

SAFETY & COMFORT PARAMOUNT We all know that what's on the equipment is not as important as what's in it. Your people are paramount to your business and equipment is adapting to keep up with the challenging workforce demands our industry is facing.

"Many customers are facing challenges with finding operators and often the operators they do have may not have in depth experience," Nagel says. "The more we can do as a manufacture to make these machines easier to use, the more successful operators will be and machine operators are a big focus when Caterpillar designs machines."

to be more productive and come back the next day, so a huge emphasis has been placed on making these machines easy to operate and comfortable.

"This can be seen with customers who are choosing to buy machines with cabs to provide their operators with a more comfortable environment which makes employee retention easier," Nagel adds. "Our new line of asphalt compactors have the ability to slide the full operator station left to right on the machine and rotate 360º. This gives the operator the ability to position their body in the direction most natural for the work they are doing and reduces strain. Along with this positioning are controls strategically placed within the operator’s zone of comfort. The machine’s steering control, for instance, is done by a unique hand wheel that is comfortable and easy to use and can be positioned in two different locations depending on operator preference."

Another focus is consistency across different machines in the fleet. The ability to run many different machines in the fleet is a huge advantage to operator-strapped companies.

"The HAMM Easy Drive system is a common operator station, from machine to machine so that the operator doesn't have to re-learn a dashboard when he's trying to run a machine," Kowalski says. “We have over 195 models of rollers and if you know three dashboards, you know, every one of our rollers, making it easy to go from machine to machine as all the buttons are in the same place as they are in any other machine."

When an operator is working, comfort isn't the only factor to consider.

They also need to be safe, and keep those around them safe. Equipment is being upgraded to help with more ergonomically placed operator stations, backup cameras and object detection sensors.

"Collision avoidance and sensors are going to become more prominent," Eckert says. "Contractors are very conscious of work zone safety and as much technology that we can get that can make machines and job sites safer is one of more important things that we can do as manufacturers. The process of building a road isn't going to change anytime soon so it's important for all of us to work together and try to be as

efficient as we can, and as safe as we can while we do it."

IS THE FUTURE ELECTRIC & AUTONOMOUS? The short answer is yes. Cars, machines, construction equipment and more are all moving to electric operation that can operate autonomously. The path to getting there for our industry however is going to be a long one. Still, the future needs to look different to comply with changing carbon emission regulations.

And then how do we charge it while we're on the job site? Well, there are definitely things that we're we're looking at and everybody else is, too."

Manufactures have released concept electric equipment and will continue to test those machines with contractors.

Autonomous operation of equipment shouldn’t have a negative connotation in an industry strapped for workers.

"Automation and autonomy are a space that more and more customers and manufactures are talking about these days. Labor shortages in the construction industry are a big driving factor and the more manufactures can do to automate machines, the more successful we make our customers," Nagel says.

"Some are looking to make an inexperienced operator more productive through automation while others are looking to reduce the number of operators needed for a job because they can’t get them or so they can be redeployed to do other tasks. Whatever the reason, Caterpillar has been working on the journey to autonomy for a long time with mining trucks and that technology is now being scaled down for our other products."

And some of that equipment is already available.

"Dynapac is fully invested in Developing Z.ERA Range of asphalt rollers where it’s practically possible to eliminate the need of fossil fuel and related emissions," Palanisamy says. "On this program our CC900e is already being delivered to select customers and

More Productivity is a Must to Make a

PROFIT

Doing more with less is essential to secure both bids and profits on construction projects

I

n thinking about this column, straight away, I planned to review here what I knew I would learn at the Independent Equipment Dealers Association (IEDA) annual meeting in Orlando, because the speakers were going to discuss the 2022 construction markets, as well as changes they would need to make when dealing with contractors going forward. And wow, what a program! Anyone connected with

the construction industry would have taken away ideas on how to improve profitability while dealing with: • Inflation • Supply chain issues • Workforce needs • Interest rate hikes • Cap-X plans • Maintenance issues • Technology to address contractor activities Some of you reading this list are thinking these issues don’t apply to you.

If that’s what you're thinking, you are 100% wrong. You are wrong because the construction industry realizes it has been on the wrong side of the

productivity equation for the last 100 years and is now taking steps to cut costs while becoming more efficient.

STICK WITH WHAT YOU DO BEST Tom Christerson, director of sales at EquipmentWatch, started out the IEDA meeting with an example of what to expect in the market. He summarized a study that showed contractor input costs had increased between 25% to 29% in 2021, with an expectation of remaining at this level for some time. As part of

COST CONTROL Since I was one of the presenters at the IEDA meeting, my goal was to make the equipment dealers aware of the watershed changes taking place within

their customer base and what these customers may expect from them going forward. After all, if contractors have to cut costs, they expect their vendors to do the same and thus help them meet their goals. I, for one, asked the dealers to absorb the cost of owning and operating the equipment in terms of owned equipment or rental units.

As part of my presentation, I put up a slide (shown above) to demonstrate how productivity improvements can increase profits. I compared a 10% increase in billing against a 5% decrease in both Labor Cost and Equipment Cost. The change is meaningful.

I would ask, make sure you are passing on current costs in your billing and locking in your current interest rates. Review your costs to own and operate your equipment. And please, investigate the technology that can assist you in becoming more proficient.

If you are going to make a Cap-X investment, make it a technology investment.

By the way, the title of my presentation was “Making It Through 202???” That about says it all. ■

The American Rental Association is projecting another big increase in rental activity. Their penetration index – percent of rental equipment compared to all equipment being used in construction – is close to 60%. I expect this number to keep climbing as contractors figure out owning equipment is not a break-even proposition.

What I’m seeing is the larger contractors are working to find ways to become up to 40% more efficient using new systems to manage workflow, equipment use, employee costs and material costs. The systems are out there, and if you add in outsourcing what other folks can do better, the more efficient you will become.

the study, a group of contractors were provided with plans for nonresidential structures to be built in 2022. The participants were asked to submit their bids for these projects, which they did with an average 13% increase in costs.

All of the contractors bidding did so at levels well below their costs, and I guess they can do that if they find ways to cut costs and complete jobs faster than they normally would. In other words, they would need to do more with less material costs, less equipment costs and less payroll costs. Thus, the title of this month’s column, which shouts that improving your productivity is not just an idea to mull over but a must!

In other words, contractors need to tighten up the ship from stem to stern. Easy to say but tough to do. In summing up what I learned from the IEDA activities and the key point to help improve productivity: Do what you do best and let someone else do the rest.

Offload internal transactions that are not key to providing your work product. Such transactions could include: • managing equipment costs and related maintenance • office and billing procedures that could be improved by upgrading the use of your current system or finding a new one that is more efficient

After proper job costing, having an organized schedule is one of the most important traits you can learn as a business owner to ensure success

t is decidedly so" that one of the biggest challenges in the pavement maintenance industry is scheduling and logistics. "As I see it" one of the easiest ways to make or break a job is through scheduling.

Magic 8 Ball puns aside, it's critical for your success to succeed at scheduling.

No matter what size you are, being organized needs to be the top priority.

Like most pavement contractors, we work seasonally, so making our money while we can is ever so important. We have about 100 working days a year, so the only way to make the most of those days – to make the money we need while satisfying what the clients need -- is with proper planning and scheduling. By proper scheduling, you will maximize every opportunity to make money and, just as important, you will also maximize your crews and prevent burnout. If you don't plan properly, you’ll face crew burnout, followed in short order by a flat-out loss of potential revenue because your burntout crews won’t produce enough work (and probably not enough quality work) to enable you to get the most work you can.

rior to the pandemic, a reported 23% of employees whose jobs made it possible to do so worked from home. Today, two years later, that number has increased to a whopping 59%. One of the many impacts that has had, is a marked increase in the number of complaints about backpack blower noise, the majority of which is caused by the machine’s engines.

More than 100 U.S. cities and towns now ban gas-powered leaf blowers or limit their use. The State of California, where some 80 cities have issued their own regulations, is on track to outlaw the sale of gas-powered leaf blowers

altogether in 2024. The negatives on blowers are three-fold: engine air pollution; noise pollution; and, particulate air pollution. A move to battery-powered operation essentially negates the first two of those. As for particulates, often termed ‘fugitive dust,’ no matter what type of blowers you use be sure your operators wear masks during operation and are trained about safe blower use when others are present.

Fortunately, the latest generation of lithium batteries have made it much more practical to make the switch.

Many manufacturers now provide battery-powered blower options and the use times have increased steadily in the last several years.

Humble Upbringing Contributes to Success at Piedmont Paving Inc. The company, founded by one man with a truck, has seen growth by expanding services

D

uring a breakfast conversation with his wife’s family, David McGee explained his plan to start his own paving business. Little did he know, his wife’s grandfather, Mr. Willis, would decide to invest in his dream and provide the initial $5,000 loan to begin building Piedmont Paving in 1991.

“With the investment from my wife’s grandfather, I bought a little dump truck, shovels, rakes, lutes and rented a roller,” said McGee. “I made some business cards and began knocking on doors in April. Once I started completing projects, I began paying back the loan Mr. Willis provided, $100 per month.”

McGee started off completing small patch jobs in Winston-Salem and Greensboro, NC. Back then, these cities were much smaller than they are today. He continued to grow and started to include maintenance services like sealcoating, crack sealing and striping. In 1996, there was a new construction market boom, and McGee saw the opportunity to expand again by building rapport with the local commercial general contractors.

“When we started bidding with general contractors, I had no clue how to perform a takeoff on the plans,” said McGee. “Teaching myself, I would go home at night to complete takeoffs and send proposals. The next thing I know, I started receiving contracts in the mail.

It seemed that the harder I worked, the luckier I got.”

Service and employee expansion continued for the company. In 2002, Mark Rountree was hired as the lead estimator and project manager.

In 2004, David and Mark opened a new division of the company, Piedmont Paving Concrete LLC. The expansion would not stop there; in 2014, the company purchased land to open Piedmont Recycling. The recycling yard has allowed crushed concrete and asphalt to be provided to the public.

“The recycling division has been a big feather in our cap,” said McGee. “We are able to sell the crushed material as another form of revenue for our company, and it also allows us to reach a broader base of customers.”

Piedmont Paving places customer service as a top priority and attention to detail, honesty and integrity are all traits have been instilled in all employees.

“When we say we are going to do something, we know what that entails to get the job done,” said McGee. “I was on the jobsite operating the paver for twenty-five years. I was able to see firsthand the product that we were delivering, and I think customers really appreciated that.”

Communication with customers and support for employees are important to McGee. Now, the next generation of his family are joining the company.

McGee’s sons are supervising the paving crews, and his daughters are managing the office. His brother-in-law is the lead estimator and project manager.

“I think we have an excellent team, from the office all the way to the shovel man,” said McGee. “Everyone is dependable, hard-working and trustworthy. They really care about their job and the quality of the final product.

We pride ourselves on providing a family-style work environment, and I am always aware that without good employees, a company will never succeed.

“Here we are thirty-one years later.

We started with a dump truck and a few tools, and now we have forty employees, an asphalt division, a concrete division, a maintenance division and a recycling division. I guess the harder you work, the luckier you really do become.” ■

T.E.M.P.

Taking your crew’s daily “T.E.M.P.” means making sure that they have prepared for each day by securing four important components

H

ow many of the following has your crews experienced?

• Crew forgot to take an important tool or piece of equipment.

• No one performed a PM on the skidsteer, and it has two flat tires.

• The saw blade needs replacing, and no one got one while at the yard.

• “Bob” has a early morning doctor’s appointment today and forgot to tell the foreman the day before.

As the cost of everything we use to produce the best results possible continues to escalate, it’s even more critical that we have crews better prepared to shore up what they can do to insure they have taken every

step possible to achieve the best results. There are four components that can assist your crews.

Taking your crew’s daily “T.E.M.P.” means making sure that they have prepared for each day by securing four important components.

• Tools – Do they have every tool needed for the day? And are the tools in safe and working order or do they need replacement or maintenance? Also, are the needed tools loaded in a safe and organized manner on the truck or trailer?

• Equipment – Does the crew have every piece of equipment needed to execute the scheduled work today? Has the equipment received its daily “PM” to ensure the oil, hydraulics, air, and battery register at the needed levels?

And is the equipment properly and safely tied down for the trip to

and from the job site?

• Materials – Have the materials been ordered for the job and is there an estimated time of arrival? Are any material or components staged at the company yard? Have the needed amounts been loaded and secured for the trip to the jobsite? Does the Foreman need to contact the material plant (again) to confirm they are running the needed type or blend of material for your project?

• People – Did all of the workers show up as scheduled? If a “NoShow” or “Tardy” employee is experienced, what is the plan to backfill that spot if the job needs a full crew? Does each crew member understand their role for the day; the goal for the day; and the reminder to work safe and smart?

taken at the start of each new day…at the yard before leaving for the jobsite. As you break out of the blocks this spring, be sure to start your crews out on the right foot by ensuring that they have everything, and everyone, needed to perform the project as contracted.
