IT DOESN’T TAKE MUCH TO erode a customer’s trust. A questionable expense, poor service or even a perceived slight can cause a customer to walk away and never return.

Take the recent experience I had with an online travel booking service. During a weekend getaway, my spouse and I needed to make a last-minute hotel reservation. I

checked a couple of travel sites and came across a listing that worked. The price quoted seemed a bit high, but the site warned it was the last available room and, after all, it offered a “best price guarantee.”

On attempting to confirm the reservation, errors came up repeatedly, so we hurriedly headed to the hotel just in case (its parking lot was nearly empty) and

found the reservation had gone through but apparently not the payment. We were pleased when the hotel charged us at a lower rate than quoted.

Upon returning home, however, I found two charges on my credit card statement: the lower one paid to the hotel and the higher one charged by the travel site.

I immediately contacted the site’s customer service department. After a couple of frustrating interactions and repeated assurances I would hear back from them within X number of business days, the only contact I received was from the hotel indicating the booking service insisted the hotel refund what it charged so the service could re-charge me, presumably at the higher rate. When I asked the hotel representative about the price discrepancy, I was told it was likely a built-in “service fee.”

My point in sharing this story is that while the added cost incurred was minimal (less than $50), the incident left me feeling cheated and frustrated by the lack of transparency and follow through. I have since shared my experience with my family, friends and colleagues, most of whom travel frequently. It’s the way of the world — a happy customer will tell a handful of people, but a displeased customer will tell everyone they know. Another side effect?

The incident has turned me off of using not only this travel site but all such sites for the foreseeable future.

A company the size of the one in question can perhaps afford to lose what it likely perceives as incremental business in the face of millions of potential customers. But this isn’t the case for most companies or industries — the construction industry included. Even in the best of times, competition among contractors is fierce and profit margins tight.

Unfortunately, stories abound of less than honorable firms charging well above cost on an estimate or bid, or using shoddy materials and cutting corners in other ways just to pad their pockets. This erodes trust in the firm in question, but there is often a ripple effect across the entire industry. Such incidents perpetuate the perception of the “shoddy” or “shady” contractor, and may cause prospective clients to hesitate to hire out future work.

And while such incidents rarely lead to much media attention, never underestimate the power of word of mouth and the effect on businesses offering similar services.

In any industry, you’re only as good as your reputation, and that reputation can be tarnished fast if customers walk away feeling used, abused or ignored.

Honesty, integrity and fairness in your business dealings — including transparency in pricing — can go a long way toward keeping that image well polished. ET

Fang Rake Attachment The Fang Rake is a land clearing, rock and stump removal tool for excavators and backhoes that provides the ability to comb the ground to remove stumps, brush and rocks for simplified land clearing. The rake has no crossmembers to act as an obstruction.

The tines are manufactured from high-strength Swedish Hardox 400 alloy steel, and their shape is designed to lift rocks and roots up and out of the ground with the least amount of energy required from the machine. When used in conjunction with a hydraulic thumb, stumps and boulders can be grabbed and removed or positioned similar to that of a hydraulic grapple.

The PreView Sentry object detection system is designed to reduce the incidence and severity of heavy-duty equipment accidents. It can accurately identify the location and velocity of up to 16 people or objects simultaneously. A Ford-built 10-speed automatic transmission for the F-150 delivers improved acceleration and performance compared with previous six-speed automatic transmissions due to optimized wide-span gear spacing coupled with drag-reduction actions.

F

or years, truck manufacturers have waged a horsepower/torque war, with heavy-duty diesel pickups nearing an astonishing 900 ft.-lbs. of torque. As capability has exceeded many customers’ needs, manufacturers have turned their attention to the next battleground — fuel economy.

While torque and horsepower still earn bragging rights, many of the latest innovations — such as 10-speed transmissions, weight-saving materials, start-stop technology, engine management systems and aerodynamic technologies — promise lower operating costs.

Those being addressed with the 2017 models are reducing weight; increasing aerodynamic efficiency; limiting fuel use when power is not needed; implementing more efficient transmission technology with more gears to keep the engine power band closer to its “sweet spot”; and increasing engine combustion efficiency.

FORD ENHANCES ECOBOOST AND CUTS WEIGHT EcoBoost is Ford’s core technology to drive fuel economy.

Smaller displacement, more efficient turbocharged engines produce the same power as their larger displacement counterparts at a significant fuel savings.

Ford targeted fuel-conscious customers with a choice of two EcoBoost engines — a 2.7-liter four cylinder or a 3.5-liter V6 — for its popular F-150. These EcoBoost options currently account for more than 60% of all F-150s sold.

“EcoBoost is delivering the

value, capability and performance F-150 customers insist upon, while helping improve their No. 1 demand — better fuel economy,” says Doug Scott, Ford truck group marketing manager. The F-150 is the only truck in its segment offering turbocharged direct injection engines.

For 2017, all F-150 pickups equipped with EcoBoost engines come with Auto StartStop Technology. Specially tuned for truck customers, Auto Start-Stop shuts off the engine when the vehicle is at a stop, except when towing or in fourwheel-drive mode. When the brake is released, the engine quickly restarts.

The technology contributes to a reduction in CO2 emissions due to decreased idle times. “Now, with every EcoBoost-equipped F-150 mildly electrified with standard Auto Start-Stop technology, customers’ fuel efficiency is expected to improve, as well,” says Scott.

The 2.7-liter EcoBoost equipped F-150 with standard Auto Start-Stop offers EPAestimated fuel economy of 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway.

This fall, a second-generation 3.5-liter EcoBoost with standard Auto Start-Stop and a new 10-speed automatic transmission will provide at least 30 lbs.-ft. more peak torque compared with the first-generation 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine, enabling more than 450+ lbs.-ft. for a V6.

CHEVROLET AND GMC INNOVATE POWERTRAINS For customers who do not need the capability of a full-size truck, the mid-size truck segment has gained popularity.

After successfully re-entering the mid-size truck market in 2015, the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon have continued to evolve.

For 2017, they offer a new V6 engine and eight-speed automatic transmission, in addition to the previous Duramax 2.9liter diesel. According to Stan Ludlow, chief engineer for the 2017 Colorado, “The Colorado is currently the most fuel-efficient pickup truck in America, with an EPA-estimated 31 mpg highway when equipped with the diesel engine. As such, for the new V6 and eight-speed combination, we focused on improving everyday driving performance.”

The second-generation double overhead cam engine architecture retains the same 3.6-liter displacement as before, with an updated suite of advanced engine technologies.

This includes improved variable valve timing for intake and exhaust, improved direct injection and, for the first time, Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation), which disables two cylinders under light throttle applications. Horsepower and torque increase to an SAEcertified 308 hp at 6,800 rpm and 275 lbs.-ft. at 4,000 rpm.

The GM-developed HydraMatic 8L45 eight-speed transmission is approximately the same size and weight as the 6L80 six-speed automatic it replaces.

However, the eight-speed automatic offers a wider 7.0 overall gear ratio spread than the 6L80 transmission’s 6.0 ratio. This results in a numerically higher first gear ratio, helping drivers start off more confidently with a heavy load or when trailering, and numerically lower rear axle ratios that reduce engine rpm on the highway for improved efficiency.

Extensive use of aluminum and magnesium, combined with similar packaging to the outgoing 6L80 transmission, equates to no increase in overall weight for models equipped with the new 8L45 transmission.

Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups rely on a trio of EcoTec3 engines that feature direct injection, Active Fuel Management and continuously variable valve timing to make the most of power, torque and efficiency across a broad range of operating conditions.

The ability to more precisely control combustion enables the engines to run with a higher compression ratio — 11.0:1 for the versions with regular fuel recommended. Higher compression is one of the best ways to simultaneously boost power and efficiency. An eight-speed transmission is available with the Silverado LTZ and High Country models with the 5.3L and 6.2L engines.

The Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra HD trucks offer a next-generation 6.6-liter Duramax turbo diesel engine that produces an SAE-certified 445 hp and 910 lbs.-ft. of torque.

It offers 90% of peak torque at a low 1,550 rpm and sustains it through 2,850 rpm.

This engine employs a common rail direct injection fuel system with new high-capability solenoid-type injectors.

High fuel pressure of 29,000 psi (2,000 bar) promotes fuel atomization for a cleaner burn that reduces particulate emissions.

combustion event, contributing to lower noise, greater efficiency and lower emissions. Technology advancements enable less complex solenoid injectors to deliver comparable performance to piezo-type injectors.

A new electronically controlled, variable-vane turbocharger produces higher maximum boost pressure (28 psi) to help the engine make more power, and revisions to enhance the capability of the exhaust brake system.

Marked by a hood scoop, the air intake system provides 60% of the air to the Duramax diesel engine from an inlet at the front of the hood. The air provided to the engine is very close to the outside ambient temperature and much cooler than the air under the hood.

There’s also a ram-air effect from the incoming air at highway speed that helps pack more air into the engine. The air filter housing also draws 40% additional air from a dry location in one of the front fenders. It blends with the cooler air from the hood inlet before funneling into the Duramax’s combustion chambers. This assures the engine can breathe even if the hood is completely blocked.

Maximized engine performance requires more than cool air; the air must also be clean and dry. Accordingly, the functional hood scoop includes a unique air/water separator to ensure only combustion-enhancing dry air is drawn into the engine. The air charge enters an expansion chamber containing a sharp, 180° turn on its way to the air filter housing. That creates a velocity change that causes humidity or mist to form larger,

NISSAN EXPANDS LINEUP “Nissan is undertaking an allout assault on the light truck market in the U.S. this fall with a steady stream of new trucks, SUVs and crossovers,” according to Fred Diaz, division vice president and general manager, North America Trucks and Light Commercial Vehicles, Nissan North America, Inc. The TITAN XD stakes out a position between traditional heavy-duty and light-duty pickups. For the 2017 model year, the Nissan full-size pickup lineup expands with the arrival of the TITAN half-ton.

The TITAN Single Cab is the first-ever single cab offering. It is designed to provide an affordable entry point in the commercial fleet/work truck market. The Single Cab is the second of three eventual TITAN body configurations, joining the current Crew Cab and future King Cab. Like the Crew Cab configuration, the TITAN XD Single Cab will be offered with a choice of two engines — the Cummins 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel rated at 310 hp and 555 lbs.ft. of torque, and the 5.6-liter Endurance V8 rated at 390 hp and 394 lbs.-ft. of torque. With about a foot shorter wheelbase, the TITAN Single Cab will be offered initially with the new 5.6-liter Endurance V8; a V6 engine will be available at a later date. Diesel-equipped models will feature an Aisin six-speed automatic transmission; V8 gasoline engine-equipped versions will utilize a seven-speed automatic transmission.

The Nissan TITAN Single Cab is the truck’s first-ever single cab offering. It is designed to provide an affordable entry point into the commercial fleet/work truck market. aerodynamics (an approximate 10% reduction vs. the previous generation) and incorporates a front spoiler, roof and tailgate spoilers, front tow hook hole cover, underbody covers, rear tire wind deflectors and a seal between the cab and bed.

The TITAN half-ton also includes an Active Grille Shutter, which helps reduce drag by closing the grille opening behind the radiator when a large amount of airflow is not needed (based on coolant temperature, vehicle speed and air conditioning system pressure).

While the 2017 TITAN half-ton’s new 5.6-liter Endurance V8 engine shares its displacement with the previousgeneration V8, that is where the similarities end. The new engine features Direct Injection Gas technology, which provides

better wide-open throttle performance and improved fuel economy and emissions performance (vs. a non-direct injection system) by reducing engine knock, improving combustion stability and offering precise injection control. An 11.2:1 compression ratio (9.8:1 in the previous TITAN) is provided by a new piston design, aiding overall engine efficiency and performance, and a Multi Control Valve assists in managing the engine’s thermal efficiency better than a traditional thermostat.

TOYOTA OFFERS NEW ENGINES The new Toyota Tacoma features two engines.

A 2.7-liter DOHC four-cylinder with VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing with intelligence) produces 159 hp and 180 lbs.-ft. of

torque at 4,000 rpm. EPA estimated city/highway/combined mpg for the 4x2 with automatic transmission is 19/23/21.

Estimated fuel efficiency for the 4x4 with a manual transmission is 19/21/20 and 19/22/20 for the automatic.

For added performance, the Tacoma offers a V6 with a 3.5-liter Atkinson cycle and VVT-iW (Variable Valve Timing with intelligent Wider Intake), equipped with Toyota’s D-4S technology featuring both direct and port fuel injection. The new V6 will generate 278 hp, an increase of 42 hp over the previous V6, and 265 lbs.-ft. of torque at 4,600 rpm. Estimated city/highway/combined mpg for the 4x2 automatic is 19/24/21.

Estimated mpg for the 4x4 manual is 17/21/19 and 18/23/20 for the automatic.

Both engines will be paired with a new six-speed automatic transmission with electronic

shift. The V6 can also be mated to a new six-speed manual transmission and the four-cylinder to a five-speed manual.

The new powertrain makes the Tacoma more powerful and fuel efficient.

The Toyota Tundra comes standard with the 4.6-liter i-Force V8 that produces 310 hp at 5,600 rpm and 327 lbs.-ft. of peak torque at 3,400 rpm. The most popular Tundra engine is the available 5.7-liter i-Force V8.

It generates 381 hp at 5,600 rpm and 401 lbs.-ft. of peak torque at 3,600 rpm. Many models with the 5.7-liter V8 are certified Flex-Fuel Vehicles that can use up to E85 blend fuel.

FOR THE 2017 MODEL YEAR, THE NISSAN FULL-SIZE PICKUP LINE EXPANDS WITH THE ARRIVAL OF THE TITAN HALF-TON. shortage of qualified drivers, greenhouse gas (GHG) regulations, emerging collision mitigation technologies and telematics-driven uptime solutions are rapidly transforming the Class 7 and 8 vocational truck market.

An emphasis on driver retention is changing how trucks are spec’d. “There’s a focus on maximizing driver comfort and minimizing driver fatigue; providing trucks with a comfortable, quieter environment; spec’ing automated manual transmissions to attract newer drivers entering the industry; and choosing trucks with an eye to serviceability and uptime,” says Kurt Swihart, Kenworth marketing director.

Your future success depends on keeping drivers motivated. “Vocational users want to build lasting relationships with their drivers, and they want to make the profession as appealing as possible,” says Mary Aufdemberg, director of product marketing, Freightliner Trucks.

“They are thinking about specs that will make drivers excited to be on the job, as well as productive.”

“Vocational operators need to deal with an aging driver workforce, and make driving trucks more appealing to a younger generation,” adds Swihart. “To be successful, we need to help them improve driver retention and reduce their operating costs.

We see this trend not only continuing, but accelerating as more employees, particularly skilled drivers, retire or get closer to retirement.”

Technology is also changing the cost of ownership equation.

“Customers are also thinking about the entire life cycle of their truck, so they are spec’ing safety features and fuel-efficient engines, and incorporating telematics solutions that reduce the real cost of ownership,”says Aufdemberg.

AUTOMATION EASES DRIVER WORKLOAD The emphasis on driver retention is changing how trucks are spec’d. Automated manual transmissions (AMTs) have driver-friendly features that can make the experience better for the driver. AMTs are also good for drivers with less experience, so offering an AMT solution expands the driver pool.”

While all major fault codes are visible to the driver, fleets can prevent drivers from seeing minor fault codes that can prove distracting.

vocational users who want that technology. It does work in those environments.”

Expect further safety systems to evolve in the near term. “Wider acceptance of safety systems is going to continue as a trend in the industry,” Aufdemberg comments. “We will continue to see additional active safety system features rolled out each year.” Features such as pedestrian recognition, crosstraffic recognition, roll stability and blind spot recognition are a few examples.

System integration is already enhancing current vehicle safety. “The Detroit Assurance suite of safety systems is fully integrated with Detroit engines and transmissions, as well as the truck’s braking system and dashboard, to enhance driver safety by mitigating collisions,” says Aufdemberg. “The full integration results in smoother and more fuel-efficient speed and braking transitions.”

Other technologies are also gaining traction. “In terms of safety technologies, roll stability and disc brakes are features that are gaining popularity with vocational customers,”

says Wrinkle. “Camera systems are used regularly in [Mack’s] cabover TerraPro and LR models, as well.”

All vocational trucks that drive on the road could benefit from these systems. “The main challenge is ensuring these devices are able to survive the abuse that vocational jobsites unleash,” says Wrinkle.

“Just keeping the safety devices clean in order to function properly could also be a challenge.” Vocational truck owners do not wish to complicate the work of the drivers or add hardware that could cause additional maintenance.

Peterbilt has made front air disc brakes and electronic stability control standard. “Those are among more than a dozen standard safety features that range from improving visibility to safer entry to and egress from the cab,” says Cook. “There is also a range of optional safety features, including the recently introduced Bendix Wingman Fusion, which integrates several advanced safety technologies to help mitigate rear-end collisions, provide speeding alerts, brake when stationary objects are approached and reduce the risk for rollovers, loss-ofcontrol situations and side-swipe crashes. Vocational customers frequently spec for safety and we expect Bendix Wingman Fusion to be a popular option.”

says Schimunek. “Improvements to fuel systems, aspiration and higher compression ratios have contributed to this. It is important to understand there are technical limitations to any engine, and that constantly running at the higher power ratings means that the engine will be operating closer to its design limit.”

Downsizing has its advantages. “We see downsizing in two main areas: reducing weight, and spec’ing for the right horsepower and torque rather than simply the highest available,” says Cook.

“Every pound we can take out of a truck means another pound of payload. Unless you’re doing heavy-haul over 120,000 lbs. or need 600 hp, a 15-liter engine may not be necessary.”

“We continue to see more historically 15-liter customers converting to 13-liter engines,” says Swihart. “This is not only in on-highway applications. It also makes sense in those vocational applications where loads don’t often exceed 100,000 lbs. and truck operators can benefit from higher fuel economy and lower

overall chassis weight.

We are now starting to see vocational customers even switch from 13-liter to 11-liter power, spurred on by what we were able to accomplish with the new 2017 PACCAR MX-11 engine next year.” This 11-liter engine puts out up to 430 hp and 1,650 lbs.-ft. of torque.

A smaller engine may also help with aftertreatment performance. “The DPF and SCR systems want to work when hot, and oversizing an engine and never running it is one of the causes of aftertreatment failures,” says Swihart. “So really, sizing the right engine for the application is becoming even more important. Larger displacement engines still have their place in loads that are exceedingly heavy, such as lowboy or heavy-haul,

Over the last few years, there has been an emphasis on “right sizing” engines. “Engine technology has allowed us to extract more horsepower from smaller displacement engines,” says Wrinkle. For example, the new 435-hp rating for Mack’s MP7 engine essentially puts 13-liter power in an 11-liter engine. “The main benefits for customers choosing smaller displacement engines are improved fuel efficiency and reduced weight while maintaining power levels that are required to get the job done.”

The main shift has been from 15-liter to 13-liter engines.

“There has been a greater focus on 13-liter engines as various manufacturers have increased the top ratings on these engines,”

but most vocational applications can easily use a 13-liter or even 11-liter engine to do the work needed.”

“Navistar was on the forefront of driving customers from 15 liters to 13 liters,” Gilligan asserts. “In 2010, we stopped offering 15-liter engines entirely.” But three years ago, the company re-introduced a 15-liter product. “There are some customers who are extraordinarily loyal to the 15-liter engines for durability and longevity, and there are other customers who have found that the 13 liter works for them. They like the weight savings, which is around 500 lbs. We think the majority of conversion [from 15-liter to 13-liter engines] has occurred.”

But expect the trend to smaller, lighter, more powerper-displacement engines to continue. For example, a readymix application may be able to move from a 13-liter engine to an 11.5-liter engine and save an extra 500 lbs.

“Any application where the weight determines your payload

As power densities have increased, 13-liter engines, like this Mack MP-8, have replaced 15-liter engines in many applications. This translates to reduced weight and increased payload. and your load payment is tied to that, it becomes very important,” says Gilligan.

However, there are practical limits. “There is a finite point where you just cannot get anymore horsepower and torque out of a certain block without sacrificing durability,” says Gilligan.

As power ratings continue to expand, it is really all about choice. “Rather than considering the engine landscape as going through a downsizing, it needs to be viewed as there being an expansion or wider selection of engine choices for a variety of applications,” says Schimunek.

“The key toward selecting the right option is looking closely at load factors, duty cycles, GVW, weight sensitivity and other variables. Higher displacement engines will continue to have a variety of advantages in different applications such as durability and resale value.” ET

The most important advice is to make sure the trailer is well-suited for your particular application, both now and into the near-term future. “Trailer failures in general result from using the wrong trailer for the job at hand,” says Jim Ladner, transportation sales manager, Landoll Corp. “Moving heavy equipment requires proper evaluation of the equipment being transported and then utilization of the proper trailer for safe transport.”

UNDERSTAND ALL CRITICAL EQUIPMENT DIMENSIONS Take inventory of all equipment you plan to move with the trailer. “The most crucial factor is making sure the trailer will haul the desired equipment,” says Rodney Crim, vice president of sales, XL Specialized Trailers. “This can be achieved by making sure the trailer has a high enough capacity rating to handle the largest piece of equipment it will be hauling. Customers also need

to understand the regulations in their state, checking with their respective DOT office.”

Make a list of all critical measurements of the equipment to be transported.“When selecting a heavy-haul trailer the most important criteria to consider include the height, width and weight of the equipment they are hauling and the state DOT regulations for the states they will be hauling in,” says Ladner. “You must do your homework. You need to know the size and weight of each piece of equipment you will be hauling and where you are traveling.”

By carefully considering your options you may be able to maximize utilization of a trailer. “Sometimes one trailer can work for most equipment used by a contractor,” notes Crim.

In order to trailer equipment safely with your pickup or chassis cab, you need to understand the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) and proper weight distribution.

Exceeding the GVWR still remains a common problem. The confusion arises due to a misinterpretation of how the GVWR is calculated.

Manufacturers use several different methods to determine a trailer’s GVWR. Some use the lowest component rating. This is often the axle or tire capacity. So if you have two axles rated at 6,000 lbs., the GVWR for the trailer would be 12,000 lbs. Some manufacturers add the weight of the trailer itself to the trailer capacity.

While this can be confusing, a basic understanding of GVWR, gross axle weight rating (GAWR) and tongue weight can help you stay safe and legal. First, the GVWR includes the weight of the equipment to be towed, any attachments and the weight of the trailer itself.

Hint: a 12,000-lb. GVWR does not mean you can legally haul a piece of equipment that weighs 12,000 lbs.

It is also more complicated than merely GVWR. You need to stay under the permissible GAWR and tongue transfer weight, as well. The formulas are defined as: GAWR = Sum of all tire capacities or sum of all axle capacities GVWR = T railer capacity + trailer weight Neither of these limits are to be exceeded.

The tongue weight is the amount of downward pressure exerted by the trailer tongue onto the hitch ball.

This weight is actually transferred to the tow vehicle. The amount of weight that can be transferred to the tow vehicle is often limited by hitch capacity. So if your hitch is rated at 1,200 lbs., you can transfer 1,200 lbs. to the tow vehicle.

Some states recognize tongue transfer weight and allow you to subtract this weight off the trailer’s GVWR. If your state is one that recognizes tongue transfer weight, that can factor into your equation. Either way, you need to ensure the trailer has a sufficient gross combination weight rating (GCWR) or GAWR to legally haul your equipment.

Given the long life of most equipment trailers, a quality finish can help prevent corrosion. cracking. “That means if you use 100,000-psi for the entire trailer, it could flex too much and be subject to shorter life cycles,” Ladner explains. “You could end up with damage due to the vibration and wear from rough road conditions. Landoll uses a combination of 80,000- and 100,000-psi flange to get a mix of maximum durability and some flexibility. You must have both durability and flexibility to build trailers with tare weights that are acceptable and the frame is able to haul the rated weights.”

FACTOR IN WEATHER RESISTANCE Heavy equipment trailers are long-term investments that can last 20+ years, which means weather resistance is a primary factor in many applications.

can help resist corrosion in these environments.

Landoll’s paint process includes taking the welded frame, putting it through a finish prebake and steel shot blasting it to a bright metal. A zinc-rich primer is next applied and cured in an oven. Finally, the powder coat is applied and cured to the primer. “[This process] provides excellent protection,” says Ladner. “However, for ultimate rust protection, you cannot beat galvanization. Landoll offers to galvanize the entire frame of any of its trailers. Our first galvanized unit was in 2004 and the crossmembers under the trailer looked

Decking material should also be carefully considered. Both XL Specialized Trailers and Landoll use Apitong decking as the standard material. “It is much stronger than oak, and we have found that it holds up to the rigors our customers need it to,” says Crim.

Ease of loading is a major consideration with any heavyhaul trailer. “For the traveling

axle trailers, a major factor is the load angle,” says Ladner.

“Generally, the less the angle, the safer it is to load the equipment.

Regarding a detachable trailer, it’s obviously safer to detach the trailer and load from the front than it is to load equipment over the back of the trailer using ramps.”

EASE OF USE A PRIORITY The objective with any trailer is to quickly and safely transport

equipment to the jobsite with minimum fuss. “Lowboys with detachable necks allow for loading on the front ramps,” says Crim. “Getting the neck detached and reattached quickly and safely is important. Most contractors choose a hydraulic neck instead of a mechanical neck because the process is faster.

Our necks are attached with an air-lock pin in the base, as well as pins in the front for added safety.”

Often, it’s the small differences that can set one trailer apart from another. For instance, Landoll developed a customized steel traction plate. “We could not find a traction plate on the open market that was designed for the concentrated loads we see with rental and construction equipment,” says Ladner.

“Landoll’s traction plate makes it safer to load equipment during different weather conditions like rain and snow.” ET

Technology Helps Clean Up

MESS OF A PARKING LOT PROJECT Technology helps contractor re-engineer a difficult project, plus add new services.

H

eartland Concrete Construction, Hastings, NE, was hired to finish grade and concrete pave a 100,000-sq.-ft. parking lot being built for a new grocery store. The job turned out to be much more difficult than advertised — and then some. “It was a disaster,” says Beau Wissing, Heartland co-owner.

Heartland is primarily a flatwork company with about 70% of its business involving concrete paving in commercial applications such as parking lots. It also handles flooring for larger commercial facilities and does a bit of residential work. It has been in business since 1993, when Beau’s father, Jeff, opened up shop. The two now serve as co-owners of the business.

“This was without a doubt the most complex parking lot we’ve ever done,” Wissing comments. “There were valleys and ridges and crazy stuff all over. The elevations were off — nothing matched. The engineer had been fired. The plans made no sense.”

That was the good news. “The entry was unworkable,” he states. “It was the worst part of the whole project. There was an approach that had a ridiculous elevation change.”

The general contractor told Wissing to take whatever steps necessary to move forward. Yet Heartland is a small firm with limited resources. So what does a contractor do when a job is falling apart, and fixing it is up to you?

Wissing has seen those results firsthand.

“What took a crew of 10 more than a week is now done with a crew of six in a day,” he comments. But on this project, the impact of the technology went beyond productivity.

The first step was re-engineering the approach. “There was a curb run of 150 ft. with 3 ft. of fall,” says Wissing. “The engineer designed it so 2 1/2 ft. of slope was in the first 20 ft. The last 90 ft. had 4 in. of fall.”

The result would have been a very steep drop-off for entering vehicles, and transition problems in many other places. “With some areas of the lot, we knew we could make adjustments that would work,” Wissing says. “With the entrance, we needed new engineering.”

Wissing turned to SITECH Mid-Plains and its design team. “The rep at SITECH Mid-Plains designed it,” says Wissing. “We worked on it together in Business Center HCE. Then we could see it in 3D and make sure everything was flowing. We actually made it constructible, which was a miracle.

“Once it was designed in Business Center - HCE, we just went out and created it,” he adds. “We were able to finish quickly, too.”

There were challenges in other areas of

the parking lot that the universal total station and Trimble machine control were used to address. “I could drop the blade to the dirt level, and the readout would say add material or take some away,” Wissing notes.

“If the re-work was extensive, we had another machine handle it. He would get it close,

“It’s not my preferred process but it did make for a quick recovery,” he says.

“Without that technology, I don’t know what we would have done,” Wissing states. “We’re a small contractor. It’s not like I have an engineering department I can call.”

On most jobsites, a Heartland operator simply makes a pass with the automated grade control engaged to reach finish grade.

That changed with the use of the GCS900 and SCS900. “Instead of a week or longer, the work was finished in a single day,” says Wissing. “And even that day required only six workers, not the previous 10.”

The system has exceeded expectations.

“It pays for itself quickly,” says Wissing.

“We just hoped that the time saved and productivity would be a good investment.

Now, a few months later, we can’t believe how good that investment is.

“It’s changed everything — our outlook on bidding, everything,” he adds.

Project managers are also impressed, and sometimes puzzled, by the setup. “We show up and they say, ‘Hey, where’s the rest of your crew?’” Wissing notes. “I say, ‘Just relax.

Trust me.’ In a few hours we’re done — and they can’t believe it.” ET

PRODUCTIVITY PAYS FOR ITSELF The firm utilizes the universal total station and GCS900 on a Bobcat compact track loader, which is a customized grade control configuration that SITECH Mid-Plains set up. “We have an 8-ft. grader attachment on the front of the track loader.,” says Wissing “All controls are automatic.

Really, it’s the same setup as the big road graders.”

On most jobsites, a Heartland operator simply makes a pass with the automated grade control engaged to reach finish grade. “No concrete contractor of our size in this area is using this,” Wissing boasts.

“On the universal total station side of it, we are transitioning more toward big commercial jobs where accuracy is really important, so that was a consideration,” Wissing comments. “These buildings have anchor bolts that have to be within 1/8 of an inch.”

Yet the building can be several hundred feet long. “Stringline can bend a couple inches over that distance,” says Wissing. “People have been doing it with stringline forever, and it works.

But I don’t think the old way is the best way.”

The productivity numbers have proven impressive. Wissing cites a recent 30,000-sq.-ft. job as an example. Previously, the project would have required a week to a week and a half of fine grading, with a crew of 10 required for the layout, grading and stakeout.

Get Your House, and Books, in Order Keeping “the books straight” year round can help you solve problems early and better manage cash flow.

ow’s the time to get your act together so you can quickly close out 2016 in January and not June 2017. I think we all know that the more delays in your ability to know what is going on in your business, the less time you have to make corrections in the New Year. You would be amazed how many company owners believe they had a good year only to find out (six to nine months after the fact) that they did not.

I’m speaking from experience here as a CPA and ex-Audit Partner.

I know that companies that have control of their numbers are able to adapt solutions almost immediately at the beginning of the New Year, as opposed to those who don’t find out that they have a problem until June, leaving only six months of “solution” time in the current year.

There’s a big difference!

There is no question that keeping the books straight is important, along with appropriate current key performance indicators (KPIs) that keep you informed about operating results and cash flow. Most industry-specific systems provide this type of data, but require quality data to generate meaningful reports. Garbage-in/garbage-out reports prove to be weak in terms of assisting with decision making.

One misconception we deal with when it comes to “keeping the books straight” is the belief that all this internal auditing has to be done at year end. Not true. You save time by spreading the audit process over the entire year (as time permits), and you then make adjustments and move on to other areas to review. As long as you review all major areas at least once a year, analyze the results, correct the mistakes and change procedures to eliminate the “problems,” eventually your house will automatically provide the data you need to run your business.

Some areas require more than one review a year. These would be the cash balance, AR collections, WIP billings and expenses, equipment repairs, overtime and AP. These categories cover the bulk of your exposure. If you keep these areas under control and have adequate cash flow to pay your bills, you can reasonable rely on your KPIs and other reports to provide correct data.

I would suggest this review take place quarterly with the entire management team present to discuss issues noted and to assign accountability to correct the various issue that come up.

com/12250030)? I want to caution you to properly plan out anticipated revenue growth to ensure your cash position can handle the higher of level of disbursements required from the new work. It’s easy to believe cash flows are positive and will stay that way when in fact they won’t if you add significant new business. On the upside, if you have this daily cash report available, it will be easier to spot negative swings in cash before they get out of hand.

A way to put some of these ideas into practice is to hire some college students who major in accounting to build your reports for you and to audit the various suggested categories. Get someone with three years to go before graduation and you can make use of their talents and knowledge of your business to update the initial work for another three years. They can also help you to digitize your operation if that is of interest to you. These part-time helpers can work in the summer but also in December if you need to clean up accounts for year end.

WORDS TO THE WISE FOR 2017 Watch the debt load: The economy is kind of shaky so I would defer additional debt until you’re comfortable with your regional situation. Sorry to say this could take years. In fact, it would be a good thing if you can reduce your debt requirements, as well.

Maximize tax benefits in 2016: I’m suggesting to all the CEOs I work with to maximize their tax position in terms of depreciation deductions and other expenses for 2016 even if tax loss carryovers are created (which is what I’m looking for). In short, I know what these deductions are for 2016, but have no idea what they will be in 2017.

For example, I’m using both Section 179 and bonus depreciation so that if there is a carryover I know I will be able to use it in 2017. A tax law change in 2017 could limit or change tax depreciation charges with a negative impact on cash flow. This is an easy tax management play to make in an environment where there is too much talk about changing the tax code.

Consider getting an equipment appraisal: As I may have mentioned in the past, I like my book depreciation to be close to the orderly liquidation value (OLV) of that equipment. If your book depreciation does not reflect this value, I would consider a desktop appraisal to determine what your OLV really is. Again, the economy is the issue and I can see banks giving folks a hard time about their balance sheets, especially if they have no idea what their equipment fleet is worth.

It is also nice to know your OLV in case you want to sell some equipment off. And it will please your banker that you did it in the first place. A desktop appraisal is not an expensive proposition.

Cash is king: Enough said. Make sure you have positive cash flow and enough dry powder to take advantage of the really great opportunities that may pop up. ET

First, you must have a daily cash report that reflects (in a monthly report) the daily cash movement in terms of AR collections, bank loan receipts and other cash receipts, as well as key expense items such as field payroll, job expenses, sales and in-house employee payroll, overhead expenses, bank loan prepayments and all other G&A expenses.

This is a simple report to maintain once you get used to the format; and, after a while, you will get comfortable with the monthly cash flow as well as your annual cash flow movements. Believe me when I say, once you’re comfortable with your cash flows, life gets a lot simpler.

There’s one caveat to add at this point, and it deals with a subject discussed previously, which is to keep in mind that a higher level of sales requires capital to support it. Remember the Growth Potential Index discussed a few months ago (ForConstructionPros.
