Construction May Feel Hurricanes’ Costs

WHILE THE FULL ECONOMIC impact of back to back hurricanes is yet to be determined, estimates for Harvey alone have spanned broadly from $70 billion to as much as a $200 billion, as various agencies struggle to assess the damage from the storm and subsequent flooding.

It will be weeks before even marginally accurate estimates come out and, as past

storm history shows, years before the final board is in place in the rebuilding process.

History also demonstrates both positive and negative sides to disaster recovery for the construction sector — both of which are likely to be exacerbated by the severity and frequency of the storms. For firms willing to assume the potential risks and logistical challenges (see Running the

Business, p. 46), the rewards associated with cleanup operations and subsequent rebuilding can be substantial. For others, the coming months portend to be less profitable as these activities consume resources originally destined for other projects. Prices on certain types of building materials were already on an upward trajectory prior to Harvey and Irma, and the recovery could accelerate this trend.

Consider softwood lumber, the predominant building material in new home construction. According to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), its price has risen 22% since January 2017, when the Trump administration announced plans to place added tariffs on Canadian lumber imports. Prices for related wood products, such as plywood and gypsum, also rose marginally.

Homeowners and homebuilders in storm-affected areas have already seen sizable added price hikes for these materials.

As repair and rebuilding continues, and the threatened tariffs go into effect, it’s inevitable that supplies will tighten and costs jump across the U.S. Add to this current expectations for continued strength in total construction activity and prospects for greater federal infrastructure investment, and there could be further strain placed on limited supplies of these and other materials that continue to drive up pricing.

Of course, there is also the ongoing skilled labor shortage. The Associated Builders and Contractors estimates a shortage of 1 million+ tradespeople — a figure that does not take into account the impact of rebuilding in Texas and Florida.

This estimate is substantiated by a study sponsored by the Associated General Contractors of America and Autodesk, and released earlier this year, that indicates 70% of construction firms are having a hard time filling hourly craft positions.

The NAHB estimates 10,000 to 20,000 workers may be needed to rebuild homes damaged by Harvey. This represents 10% to 20% of the residential construction workers in the Houston metro area. And while the shortages will be felt most in Texas and Florida, the ripple effects could extend much further as firms in affected areas raise wages to attract the needed workforce, and subsequently influence labor costs across the country.

At this point, it’s too early to say to what extent construction costs will be impacted. This means it’s vital to monitor conditions nationally and in your area for pricing trends so you can build any notable increases into future bids. Also take time to review your company’s recruitment efforts, as well as its compensation package to ensure it remains competitive.

Place your business in the best possible position to maintain both profit margins and the workforce needed to complete projects on time and on budget going forward. That way, there’s less chance you’ll be caught in the flood of likely higher project costs ahead. ET

t’s official. Compact track loaders have overtaken wheeled skid-steer loaders in volume of sales. This may not come as a surprise to many given the track machines’ versatility and the advantages in flotation that keep them working in less than ideal ground conditions — often critical to get jobs done regardless of what Mother Nature decides to unleash on any given day.

Yet, manufacturers aren’t anticipating, or predicting, the demise of the skid steer any time soon. “We don’t see as many skid-steer loaders being sold in North America, but there’s still very much a need for the machine,” says Randy Tinley, product marketing manager for skid-steer loaders/compact track loaders, JCB. “We have customers who are loyal to track machines. But in the same sense, we have customers who operate wheel machines. They know what to expect and they know the machine’s capabilities, so when the new model comes out with upgrades and advances in technology, they want that new model wheel machine.

CONDITIONS WHERE WHEELS SHINE Ground conditions are often a determining factor when choosing between wheels and tracks.

Applications better suited to skid steers are often those where work is done on hard surfaces, especially concrete and asphalt.

“Skid-steer loaders are a great choice for hard surfaces because tracks can wear faster, which can increase operating costs,” says Dahl.

While compact track loaders have gained ground in asphalt/ pavement grinding due to the stability they can provide and their ability to hold grade, a wheeled unit can still have the upper hand in this application.

“Tracked machines have more rubber that meets the road. That means they have a lower ground pressure, but it can also mean more wear to the tracks,” Tinley points out. “Wheeled machines fare well in these environments because they have four wheels instead of a solid track.”

Zupancic concurs, noting, “A loader with a cold planer attachment will be working on hard

Skid steers also have the advantage when it comes to travel speed. “When talking about similarly sized and spec’d machines, one thing you will never get from a tracked machine that you will get from a skid-steer loader is ground speed,” says Dotto. “The way a track drive system works and the way it turns make it better suited for torque and power rather than speed. Turning the chain drive on a skid-steer loader through the axles doesn’t require the same

“They can be equipped with pallet forks in the morning, then a bucket or broom for cleanup at the end of the day. They are a good choice for moving around a jobsite quickly, and for being the utilitarian tool they are built to be.”

Higher travel speeds make wheeled loaders a good choice for snow removal, as well.

“When clearing parking lots, you want to move as fast as possible to get from job to job, so the advantage goes to the skid steer,” Dotto says. For maximum efficiency, he advises equipping the machine with aggressive, tractorstyle tires rather than tires with larger lugs and more surface area, which can struggle to find grip in slippery situations.

The higher ground pressure associated with tires is another plus in snow removal. “With only four points on the ground, a skid steer has a higher downward pressure, which is better for pushing snow,” Zupancic explains. “A skid-steer loader may have 30 to 35 lbs. of pressure, while a track loader might have only 4 to 5. That higher ground pressure can also be beneficial if you’re doing dirt work and need to compact the ground to make sure it doesn’t settle.”

Skid steers are often the preferred machine in demolition and scrap/recycling, where debris can more readily damage rubber tracks. Higher travel speeds and paved surfaces can also come into play.

“If you have a machine equipped with a grapple bucket

in a metal recycling yard, you’re moving pretty quickly sorting material from pile to pile, or bringing material from a different area of the yard,” says Dotto.

“You’re likely also moving across construction debris. That’s where a machine with solid or foamfilled tires can be a better choice.

If you cut a track, you’re probably in worse shape than if you have a flat tire in terms of the amount of time spent to get back up and running.”

Wheels can also be more favorable in tasks involving gravel, since gravel can get pinched in between the track and rollers and idlers. “It can chunk out the track and wear it out quicker,” Zupancic indicates. “Having wheels in a gravel environment might be a better choice.”

Lift and carry applications are often suited to wheels, as well.

“A lot of times, you’ll be working on harder surfaces,” Dahl says, noting that turning with a load in a compact track loader can quickly wear tracks. “With skid steers, we promote a 70% weight distribution in the rear with an empty bucket, which makes it easier to turn, reducing tire wear. When carrying a load, the weight distribution shifts to the front, providing the same benefits.

“Another benefit of wheels in lift and carry applications is that you generally don’t need a lot of power,” he states. Cost then becomes more of a factor. “Skidsteer loaders and track loaders have similar operating capacities so a skid steer can be a more economical choice because it is a lower-priced machine.”

SPECIFICATION ADVANTAGES If you look past the wheels and tracks, a skid steer and a compact track loader look virtually the same, and both are available with essentially the same features and options, although the popularity of certain options can vary.

However, a loader with wheels tends to be more compact, which can be important when working inside buildings and in tight spaces. “There are some key dimensional attributes that allow a skid-steer loader to fit into tighter places,” says Zupancic. “A similar-size compact track loader, by nature of having an undercarriage, will be wider so contractors who are dimension restricted may opt for a skid-steer loader.”

WHEELS REACH A NEW LEVEL Even with the growing popularity of compact track loaders, there are still those who find wheeled machines more than fit their needs.

S.V. Penix, owner, Penix Snowplowing, Concrete and Landscaping, Milwaukee, WI, appreciates both the lower initial investment and lower maintenance costs associated with skid-steer loaders, which he replaces about every three years.

His most recent purchase was a JCB Teleskid (such as shown below), which the company acquired in May. It has a telescopic boom to provide additional reach and digging depth beyond a traditional skid steer. It is being used to remove residential sidewalks, driveways and patios.

“I like the telescopic feature because some places are very tight, so that arm reaching out can make the job a lot simpler,” Penix says. “I don’t have to move the machine as much and it doesn’t make as big of a mess.”

Both application and owning and operating costs factor into Penix’s purchase decisions. “I like using skidsteer loaders because they require less maintenance and are lighter [in weight],” he says. “They cost less, too.

I have never considered a track machine because I don’t go into situations that need them.”

“In construction, skid steers are definitely being used in small paving jobs, driveways and in sewer drainage,” says Tinley.

Their smaller size makes them a good fit for small neighborhoods and tight work areas.

Skid steers will also be lighter in weight, due in large part to the absence of heavier tracks, undercarriage and related components.

That can be both a benefit and a detriment.

Jon Fye, owner, Fye Excavating, Sperry, IA, finds a mix of Case skid-steer and compact track loaders is well suited to his commercial utility site prep business, which serves Iowa, Illinois and Missouri. “We’ve run the gamut from not having any skid-steer loaders early on in the business to having four of them today, along with seven compact track loaders,” he says.

The company’s first purchases were Case 1845 loaders. “We built up to six of those in a small fleet that we used to pack product in the hole,” says Fye. “They were the ‘rock’ and were very dependable.”

Fye has since traded those units and now uses four SR220 skid steers and four TR340 and three TV380 compact track loaders. One skid steer stays at the shop and serves as a support vehicle for the maintenance crew, while the others are dispersed to jobsites.

“Typically, we use the wheeled machines when we’re on pavement, such as a sewer job through a parking lot that is already paved — anywhere where we don’t need the flotation of the tracks,” says Fye. “Anytime the conditions get too wet, that’s when the compact track loaders dominate.”

Fye says having both options offers economic benefits. “From performance standards, when conditions are ideal, they both perform very well,” he states.

“But it’s much cheaper to buy a wheeled machine over a tracked model when you compare size and horsepower per dollar. A wheeled loader is still economical to purchase and to run, especially considering maintenance, because it’s cheaper to buy four tires than it is to buy a set of tracks. For yard applications and on pavement and gravel, I don’t see any reason to spend the extra money on tracks when you don’t need the low ground pressure.”

Fye intends to keep wheeled loaders in his fleet, although he does see a trend toward tracked models. “In the past 10 years, I’ve gone from all skid-steer loaders to a 60/40 tracks-to-wheels mix,” he says. “I could even see that moving to 80/20 because more operators are requesting the track machines. However, in all fairness, operators have gotten a bit spoiled by the track loaders when a lot of times a wheeled machine does a fine job.” ET

ydraulic systems and components in compact equipment have evolved dramatically over the past several years. Even as engine ratings have dipped, hydraulic systems have become more “intelligent” with enhanced power and performance.

“Due to Tier 4 regulation, many of today’s skid steers and track loaders are using less powerful engines than comparable loaders of 10 years ago,” says Nathan Ryan, skid and track loader product manager, Manitou Americas (Gehl and Mustang). “For this generation of loaders to maintain comparable performance specifications, the hydraulics systems have to be smarter and more efficient.

“Whereas in the past finding flow to operate a specific circuit meant simply increasing the pump size, systems now look to find that flow by combining circuits that would very rarely operate simultaneously,” he explains. “Pump and valve efficiencies have also improved over the years as manufacturing technologies have evolved, creating higher quality components.

Using the available power as efficiently as possible has allowed loaders to continue to operate powered attachments — in most cases, with increased flow availability.”

“High flow continues to migrate to higher settings,” says Jorge De Hoyos, Kubota senior product manager, skid steers and compact track loaders. For example, Kubota’s new SVL952s comes in a high-flow model that boasts over 3,500 psi and 40 gpm. “Manufacturers continue to increase both pressure and flow to satisfy the requirements of... mulching heads and cold planers, among other high-performance hydraulic attachments.”

Caterpillar skid steers and compact track loaders offer four hydraulic performance packages that can produce up to 94 hydraulic hp. “Hydraulic horsepower, or working horsepower, is a calculation using the pressure and the flow produced by the machine to reflect the power available to the attachment in order to complete the job at hand,” notes Alex Gajewski, sales support consultant, Caterpillar.

“The improvements in the

hydraulic systems have allowed for more and more performance from a machine and, in turn, higher hydraulic horsepower figures."

As a result, jobs can be completed faster, particularly high-production applications like milling and mulching.

CLEANLINESS IS CRITICAL Yet, there are certain challenges associated with this higher performance. According to Ryan, the improvements in hydraulic component efficiency are largely the result of tighter tolerances on internal systems, which can make the systems more susceptible to damage by smaller contaminants.

“Like modern [emissionscompliant] diesel engines, today’s more sophisticated hydraulic components are not much different when it comes to little tolerance of contamination,” says Michael Shebetka, product manager, Takeuchi-US. “Contamination will most certainly shorten [the life of ] or completely wipe out hydraulic components, depending on how much and what type of contaminants.”

To protect sensitive components, Shebetka advises practicing routine maintenance of filters, hydraulic fluid change intervals, fluid testing and adding or replacing manufacturer-recommended hydraulic oil.

“Contamination is a risk in any system," says Gajewski, "and as hydraulic systems evolve, so do the performance capabilities of filters and contamination avoidance methods. The best way to avoid any contamination risk is for a good cleaning routine to be followed.”

Cleanliness is also critical when swapping out attachments. “Pressure-relieving quick disconnects are provided on Cat skid-steer and compact track loaders. When connecting an attachment, those disconnects oftentimes end up on the ground,” Gajewski notes. “It is very important that an operator carry a rag or some method to clean the surface of the quick disconnects on both the tool and the machine.”

Drain any pressure built up in the hydraulic lines of the attachment after use. “A combination of both cleaning the quick disconnects and relieving pressure will minimize the chance of debris entering the hydraulic system,” Gajewski indicates.

Though relieving pressure won't directly lower the potential for contamination, it will reduce the chance that an operator will need to loosen hydraulic fittings, which can lead to greater contamination risk. It also makes it easier when it’s time to re-connect the attachment.

Take particular care when connecting an unfamiliar hydraulic attachment to your equipment. “I would not recommend connecting any hydraulic attachment to your machine unless it is new or your own,” Shebetka cautions.

“You do not know what condition the stored hydraulic oil in the attachment is in... Beware unless you are willing to take the time to test the hydraulic fluid already stored in the attachment.”

Today’s sophisticated hydraulic systems have little tolerance for contaminants.

To protect components, follow recommended maintenance, and clean fittings on the machine and hydraulic attachments before connecting.

Manufacturers continue to increase both hydraulic pressure and flow to meet the requirements of high-performance hydraulic attachments.

FIND THE RIGHT MATCH Protecting your equipment also means properly pairing the carrier and attachment.

“It is very important to match the performance of a skid steer or compact track loader with the capabilities of the tool,” says Gajewski. “On high-powered rotary attachments such as brush cutters, mulchers, cold planers (milling heads) and wheel saws, the tools [require] larger amounts of both hydraulic flow and pressure. In order to deliver the high performance expected, they must be used with high hydraulic horsepower machines.”

“Using loaders with marginal flow for an attachment’s recommended flow requirements will result in attachment performance that won’t meet the operator’s expectations and reduced efficiency,” Ryan agrees. Consider a snow blower, for example.

“With borderline flow, the attachment may operate in light snow, but with a heavy snow, it will not throw the snow as far or will require a lower travel speed to sustain the same performance.

Exceeding the attachment’s max pressure and flow can have more dire ramifications. “Using excessive flow for an attachment can result in faster wear on the attachment and its hydraulic components or unsafe operating speeds of the attachment,” says Ryan.

“If you operate full throttle, then you are maximizing both flow and pressure [of the carrier], which may exceed the maximum settings of the attachment and inevitably damage attachment components, seals and hoses,” De Hoyos warns. “In those cases, a flow metering valve may help decrease the risk.”

Doing your homework can help to minimize the risk.

“Before buying an attachment... review the recommended flow requirements. In many cases, the manufacturer will have several options available to best match the loaders’ needs,” says Ryan.

“The risk depends on the [attachment’s] oil retaining capacity and type of oil,” says De Hoyos.

“If the hydraulic oil specification on the attachment matches that of the skid steer or compact track loader, then the risk is minimized to any contamination that may have entered one or the other. If the oil specifications are different, then it

Today’s compact machines, such as this Gehl skid steer, feature electrohydraulic proportional controls that allow operators to maintain precise control of attachments and allow instantaneous rampup to full flow — all at the touch of a button on the joystick.

“If a variety of attachments with varying flow requirements are to be used, then operators should consider loaders with both standard and high-flow auxiliary hydraulics capabilities.”

Companies such as Caterpillar are striving to make the process of matching carrier and attachment more seamless by offering work tools that are performance matched to the hydraulic package of their machines. In Caterpillar’s case, a nomenclature system is used to help direct the correct combination of attachment and carrier.

“Both the machines and the tools are identified with their performance packages,” says Gajewski, “and when switching between attachments, the machine with higher hydraulic performance can always operate an attachment that may not have the higher flow/pressure requirements. For example, a machine with high hydraulic horsepower can still run a work tool with lesser requirements, such as a standard-flow broom.” Only the required flow needed for operation is sent to the attachment.

To ensure an ideal match, the Kubota high-flow SVL952s offers up to five pre-settings designed to match multiple attachment requirements. By presetting the flow, the operator can eliminate the risk of overloading the settings of the attachment.

“Today’s compact track loaders and skid loaders are equipped with electrohydraulic proportion-

ride control and programmable settings for drive and implement response have led to greater control of attachments."

Take the use of the the Caterpillar creep control feature in cold planer operation.

“The creep control feature can be used to match the ground speed of the machine with the capabilities of the attachment, thereby reducing the opportunity for stall,” says Gajewski. “In that application, cutting 2 to 6 in. of asphalt off a road requires high hydraulic power and an attachment that can harness that power and efficiently cut the concrete or asphalt. The tuning of the machine/task/tool solution is imperative to maximize production.”

Such features can also translate to standard hydraulic attachments. “The work tool positioner feature allows you to set an angle for an attachment and return to the same angle repeatedly,” says Gajewski. “Also, Dual Direction Self-Level helps in bucket and pallet fork work where the machine takes care of leveling the load, avoiding any spillage or uneven distribution of material.

"All the improvements made to performance and control add up to a highly productive package," he adds, "which can improve the efficiency of the way tasks are completed on the jobsite." ET

Paralleling Generators Gains Popularity

Load management and flexibility drive the trend toward paralleling generators.

Paralleling generators lets your supply flex up and down depending upon the demands and requirements of the load. This allows fleet owners to standardize on a common size of genset and use paralleling capabilities when more power is required.

T

raditionally in prime power applications, you choose a single generator with enough power output to operate all of the tools and equipment needed on a jobsite. However, operating several smaller generators in parallel might be a more efficient and versatile solution.

Paralleling is when two or more generators are electrically coupled together using special equipment to form a larger capacity power source. If the two generators are the same size, it effectively doubles the power output.

“The basic premise behind paralleling is to take two generators and connect them together in such a way that they combine their output to make a theoretically bigger generator,” says Todd Howe, Manager - Global Generator Products, Doosan Portable Power. “In the air compressor world, that is pretty easily

done. You take the hose that is coming out of the air compressor that is producing the flow and pressure and you manifold those together. If you have two 200-cfm air compressors, putting the two together would give you 400 cfm.

“In the generator world, it is a little more complicated,” he continues. The generators need to be synchronized. To do that, the control systems of the generators need to “talk” to each other. “We are trying to get both generators to be producing the same voltage and frequency, and probably of most importance is to get them to produce the same phase angle, which basically means that the sine waves that the generators are producing peak at the same time.

If the generators fall out of synchronization, you are more likely going to damage one of them or have one of them stop producing power and start importing power.”

You can also set the

percentage of contribution from each unit. “You have controls that are capable of being set so that each genset that is paralleled will have a contribution toward the total power of the application,” says Luis Navarrete,

The controls are going to be easier to use and will do things more automatically with fewer manual settings. It is more plug-and-play.”

Many capabilities are now built in. “Paralleling generators used to require large, cabinet-size switch gear and manual interaction,” says Ben Froland, product manager, Wacker Neuson.

“Modern paralleling generators benefit from sophisticated electronic controllers that do most of the work. Other than the controller, the only other features needed are a motorized breaker and a data line to allow the generators to talk to each other.”

These advanced controls simplify what used to be very complex. “That is the big reason why paralleling is becoming more mainstream, particularly for rental companies,” says Howe. “It has always been a great tool that offers a lot more flexibility, and it helps provide better performance in certain applications like events, concerts and T.V. production, where you

need power redundancy. Having two generators running together would also give you power if one of those machines goes down if you had a fault, without disrupting the event. That has been a very common application historically, but now we are finding the same benefits flow over into other applications like oil and gas for similar reasons.”

More manufacturers have started offering paralleling controls as part of their catalog offering. Howe notes that Doosan has offered paralleling as an option on certain models dating back as far as 2010.

The offerings continue to expand. Where once offered only at the top of its portfolio, Doosan’s customers are now requesting paralleling capabilities in smaller units. “We are starting to see demand for paralleling increase down into the middle range of our portfolio,” says Howe. “I predict it’s going to be commonplace down to about 150 kW.” Many different types of generators can be paralleled, as well, even older models. “It is possible to parallel a microprocessor-based controller in a new-generation genset with a very old mechanical genset,” says Navarrete. It just takes a lot more effort to set up.

No matter what type of paralleling setup you choose, it’s best to have it set up by a skilled technician. “As you are putting

these gensets together, you are going to [want to] have a knowledgeable person come to the site and make sure the phases and the voltages are aligned and everything is running properly,” says Navarrete.

Once that is done, the new controls allow any operator with experience to run the system. “They have become more fail proof,” Navarrete states. “If you do something wrong, the machine will just not let you do it. All of the functions are now more automatic.”

PROS OF PARALLELING Paralleling offers several benefits, according to Froland. For one, it can be used to link small generators together to perform like a larger one. There are a number of reasons to do this, including: ˜˜ Greater utilization: Several small paralleling generators can be rented out individually for smaller applications and sent out together for larger applications.

˜˜ Redundancy: If the applica-

tion cannot be interrupted, two generators can be paralleled to operate at 50% load. Should one generator fail, the second generator will pick up the other 50% load without any loss of service. Redundant generators can also be set up to balance engine hours and to take turns shutting down for maintenance while maintaining the load overall.

Simple construction applications tend to be better suited to a basic generator with an easy to use control system geared toward operators seeking push button start/stop capability.

SOLUTIONS ADDRESS LIGHT LOADS In the past, with mechanically fuel injected diesel engines, light loads created a situation know as “wet stacking,” in which excess fuel in the exhaust typically made a mess but had little impact on a generator’s reliability. But newer generators equipped with modern engines are more sensitive to proper sizing.

“From the initial Tier 1 emissions levels... it wasn’t as big a problem,” says Enrique Guzman, engineering manager for mobile gensets, Generac. “They didn’t have the aftertreatment systems that you have today on Tier 4 Interim and Tier 4 Final engines. The aftertreatment systems became a little more complex with the catalysts that are needed to treat the exhaust gases coming out of the engines.”

Tier 4 engines need to stay within a specific engine temperature operating range for the aftertreatment system to work properly or the machine will experience unplanned downtime and maintenance costs.

Compression-ignited diesel engines simply don’t make a lot of heat at light loads.

“Lack of heat in the combustion system and the resulting unburned byproducts cause problems with the emissions control devices on the engine,” says Doosan’s Todd Howe. “For the first time, emissions controls in the generator industry became an equipment-disabling problem.”

These problems first emerged with the introduction of Tier 4 Interim engines, which had diesel particulate filters (DPFs). “With Tier 4 Interim and Tier 4 Final engines, a low load can result in aftertreatment issues such as a clogged diesel particulate filter, if so equipped,” says Ben Froland, Wacker Neuson.

“Diesel particulate filters in gensets were notorious for plugging up with soot because they couldn’t regenerate as designed when they were running lightly loaded,” Howe notes. “You need to have a certain amount of exhaust temperature for that chemical reaction to clean that soot up.”

METHODS TO MAINTAIN ENGINE TEMPERATURE Generator manufacturers are devising ways to keep engines within the proper operating temperature range. Each manufacturer has a unique solution, ranging from simple load banks to more elaborate solutions.

“One of the things the industry came up with as a solution was a method of load management,” says Howe. Additional load is placed on the generator in times of light load to ensure the aftertreatment system functions correctly. “Doosan invented a system that actually adds a bit of load in the form of a heater that turns on and off as needed.”

Unlike a load bank, which basically takes energy, converts it into heat and vents it out to the atmosphere, Doosan mounts the heater in the exhaust piping.

“We are able to take the heat and place it where it is best used — in the exhaust system,” Howe explains.

“Wacker Neuson has developed a unique onboard loading system, Level Load Logic, or L3 for short. This system uses a belt-driven fluid shearing device to heat up the engine coolant,” says Froland. “It simulates load both by using engine horsepower to drive the device itself, as well as bringing the engine up to a proper operating temperature. As a result, low loading pitfalls are largely eliminated.”

Engine manufacturers are also stepping up with solutions. “They are putting new technologies on the engines that are much better at managing the engine thermal management systems,” says Guzman. “So they are able to manage the load and the temperatures in the exhaust system.”

Yet, even with all of these solutions, the new engine emissions technologies place a greater emphasis on properly sizing generators. “One of the things that is definitely useful in trying to combat this early is working with the customers to properly size generators for a jobsite,” adds Guzman.

“It is all about load management,” says Navarrete. “You may need 1 MW of power at peak, but then at some point your base load goes to half of that. There is no real need to have a 1-MW machine running when it is not

controls allow functionality such as power management. “This is where you have an array of generators connected together in parallel and the control system is smart enough to determine, based on your load, which generators it should operate to optimize fuel consumption,” says Howe. “Let’s say you had four generators in parallel and you can run that job with two generators. The control system would notice that and elect to shut off two machines. If demand increases, it will bring a third machine back online and ultimately the fourth machine back online. You will not only burn less fuel, but you will run fewer hours on those generators.”

This allows generators to run more efficiently. “You need to be at least 30% loaded to have good, consistent, reliable operation,” says Howe. “There are a lot of generator applications where that is unrealistic 100% of the time.”

“With multiple paralleling generators on site, the customer can be assured that the number of generators running matches the load appropriately. If reacting to a non-linear load is a concern, the newer Tier 4 Final engines respond faster than any previous

The other drawback is that the functionality and capability of these control systems adds to their cost. “Motorized breakers and paralleling controllers are significantly more expensive than their conventional counterparts,”

POTENTIAL DRAWBACKS But paralleling does have its downsides. “It is still a more complicated control system than a basic analog generator,” says Howe. “If you have very simple construction applications — running well pumps or water pumps, job trailers or traditional commercial construction activities — sometimes these types of jobs are best suited for a simple machine with an easy-touse control system that is more

While the size of generators with paralleling capability has been decreasing, there are still size limitations. “The reason we are not seeing paralleling down into smaller units is simply that the cost/benefit isn’t there,” says Howe. “It is easy to take a 20-kW machine and switch it out for a 40-kW machine. They are similar in size. They are similar in rental rate. It is easier to take a simple machine and apply it correctly in an application as opposed to relying on a paralleling solution with the small machines to avoid that cost and complexity. Right now, 150 kW is where the bar is set.”

Generac offers paralleling capability down to 75 kW. The technical limitation to size is driven by engine size. “Smaller engines are typically harder to parallel because they are less stable speed wise,” Navarrete acknowledges. “Controlling power with load management is directly affected by your ability to control the engine speed. For us, the balance between performance and cost is 75 kVA.” There is an exception to the general sizing rule. Many smaller inverter generators offer paralleling capability. These units typically offer 2,000 to 7,000 watts and can be connected in parallel to double their output up to 14,000 watts. This is because inverter generators rely on DC power, which simplifies paralleling.

“The inverter electronics makes it a plug-and-play affair to daisy chain those units together,” says Howe. “Those units do not have to synchronize. It is more like my air compressor analogy. You just plug those units together to increase capacity.”

Regardless of generator type or size, seek expertise if you think paralleling may be right for your jobsite.

Specialized rental companies focused on the generator market more than likely have generators that can be paralleled. They will also have specialists who know how to properly apply these generators for various applications.

Payload management systems can help you optimize haul truck efficiency and productivity.

P

ayload management systems allow you to take control of productivity while eliminating overand under-loading of trucks.

These systems can also reduce loading time and truck traffic.

When operators load the right amount of material on the truck every time, more work gets done.

Instant feedback improves operator accuracy and speed. This optimizes time, fuel and component life — virtually eliminating maintenance and liability issues due to overloading.

Fewer trips are needed to complete the task. That translates to increased revenue considering that most loads run between 5% and 8% under weight of maximum legal gross vehicle weight (GVW). The savings apply to fuel and other expenses related to operating the vehicle.

First, let’s define a payload management system. “A payload

management system is a combination of sensors, software and display that collects real-time payload weight and provides useful productivity and efficiency reporting both on board to the operator and off board to the project/site supervisor through telematics systems like VisionLink,” says Scott Schmidtgall, product application specialist, Caterpillar.

The key is the ability to obtain actionable data. “Tracking production by using onboard weighing systems gives you the ability to monitor individual operators for both fuel consumption and production,” says Eric Yeomans, product manager - GPPE products, Volvo Construction Equipment.

“Tracking the payload can also help you understand material flow on the site. This can help in assessing and improving performance in the hauling processes on site — for example, the fuel

OFF-ROAD ENVIRONMENT TRANSFORMED GPS systems have allowed contractors to track cut and fill locations on the jobsite and better manage projects. And while payload management systems have been available for quite a while, being able to integrate quantities moved with the GPS coordinates creates new opportunities. “The application of this new dimension of measurement is driving a transformational change,” says Kevin Lai, segment manager, onboard weighing, Trimble LOADRITE. In the past, a contractor may have paid an employee to count truckloads. “This employee was

only measuring movement, not how much material got moved,” notes Lai. “But if you measure how many tons the contractor moved, we see this changing the way contracts are done.”

He adds, “Knowing the location is one thing, but to have payload is another dimension of measure. Payload is the actual measurement of work over time or the project progress. You can track how many truckloads in an hour and how much material is moved. The foreman knows how much material must be moved each day, so this information provides insight if changes need to be made.”

It is possible to match loads to the optimum designated capacities. “For articulated haulers specifically, proper load weight in the truck ensures maximum productivity and fuel efficiency with minimum overall maintenance costs,” says Yeomans.

“The Volvo onboard weighing system for articulated haulers is also connected to CareTrack, which means that customers can monitor and analyze productivity and efficiency information, as well as machine health data off board,” says Yeomans. “You can track individual bucket loads to help ensure a good pass

It might be right in one spot and it might not be right in another spot.”

Regardless of the density of the material, the payload management system allows every load to be optimized every time.

And since these systems automate a process that has been manually tracked by hand for the last 100 years, reliability of the data is increased. “Automation provides data that you can actually analyze,” says Lai. “You can improve your bids to be much more accurate and with higher confidence. It is a transformational change.”

“For rigid frame trucks, individual load tracking ensures the truck is not exceeding intended design limitations,” says Schmidtgall. “Individual payload monitoring is also used to calculate Ton Mile Per Hour (TMPH) information to help better manage tires and ensure the truck is not exceeding tire capabilities. An onboard payload management system can provide managers with an overall view of payload averages and trends and spot excessive loading and change the behavior to minimize the long-term effect of these issues.”

Several OEMs are tying their payload management tools into their telematics systems.

“The Volvo Load Assist system is integrated into CareTrack telematics, so you get to see total daily production and fuel at any time through the CareTrack portal,” says Yeomans.

“By installing a sim card or downloading machine data to

Overloading an off-road truck doesn’t have the same impact on every jobsite. “The impact of overloading varies by application,” says Mesnard. “For example, an overloaded truck on a smooth haul road might not see the negative impact as severely as a truck in a high rolling resistant, soft underfoot [condition] that causes frame racking and increased stress on the drivetrain and other components.”

policy. “This 10/10/20 policy states that 90% of all payloads should be less than 110% of rated target payload,” says Schmidtgall. “No more than 10% of all payload should exceed 10% above the rated target payload, and at no time should rated target payload be exceeded by 20%. The ideal haul strategy that maximizes machine component life is to keep the mean of all payloads at or below the machine’s rated target payload.

“The rated capacity of tires should always be considered in any evaluation, as well, as they can be major cost drivers,” he adds.

One thing to consider when dealing with road-legal trucks is that stationary scales do not improve loading efficiency. Even in quarries where there are platform scales, dump trucks don’t get loaded on the platforms.

Therefore, if they are under loaded, they simply leave. If they are overloaded, they pull off to one side and tip material out, then get back in line to be re-weighed.

“On-board weighing affects your production flow and helps eliminate trips by the truck to

The application determines the payback period. “Consider a prime application of an aggregate yard where a wheel loader is loading on-highway trucks.

Payback periods in this setting are pretty quick and evident,” says Schmidtgall. “An onboard scale basically assists the operator to get trucks loaded right the first time before they head to the weigh bridge. If a truck is not loaded properly when it gets to the weigh bridge, making adjustments to that load causes waste in many forms — labor of the loader operator and the truck driver, higher fuel costs, etc.”

Scales range in accuracy from 0.3% up to 3% depending on the loading environment. A load cell-based onboard scale system measures typically within 1% of GVW, and often better. The more accurate the system, the less weight you have to allow for a safety margin. The safety mar-

being used to generally track material flow, then sure,” says Schmidtgall. “However, if invoicing is part of the equation, a certified scale would be required.

For North America, this would mean using a deck scale of accuracy required.”

Typical dump truck onboard weighing systems can be retrofitted by replacing the truck’s rear hinge assembly and pin under the hoist cylinder, which is equipped with shear pin load cells to measure weight at hinges and the hoist. Do some research and understand what is available before purchase. Some units only provide load weight, while others offer per-axle weight.

It is just as important to get the load distribution correct.

Onboard scales have the ability to provide axle group weights as well as the total vehicle weight. The axle group weights can be used to assist in load distribution.

VALUE IN TRACKING THE LOADING TOOL Onboard scales can be placed on loaders, trucks or both. No matter which system you use, make sure you understand what is being measured.

“Keep in mind that onboard weighing systems do not account for the empty tare weight of trucks, which is constantly moving due to fuel changes, carryback issues, etc.,” says Schmidtgall. “So a close look at the application should be considered, especially if total gross weight is a concern.

The real value comes in reducing the amount of re-cycles that an on-highway truck can avoid.”

Loading tool systems allow operators to maximize material moved, even as conditions change. For wheel loader operators, a payload management system provides confidence regarding what that piece of equipment is actually moving, says Schmidtgall. “Material density/moisture content changes can affect what a certain volume weighs,” he explains.

Payload management systems on loading tools allow loader operators to identify peak times, identify what material is being loaded out and avoid truck recycles for load adjustments,

notes Schmidtgall. This frees up time to focus on the next customer.

To further aid productivity, Caterpillar has introduced a new feature to boost loading efficiency. “For wheel loaders, we have introduced to this industry the idea of low lift weigh,” says Schmidtgall. “Low lift weigh provides the ability for an operator to obtain an estimated weight of the current bucket load even before entering the traditional weigh range.

“This is beneficial in many ways,” he continues. “It results in faster cycle times since, on the last pass, the operator no longer needs to raise to the end of the weigh range only to realize he has too much material. The operator can simply engage a smooth, steady, slow lift out of the pile with the last bucket.”

The operator then gets an estimated weight, which can be as low as 40% lift height vs. traditionally 65% lift height. This results in up to 10% cycle time savings vs. traditional methods.

“He can then tip off material at the pile to the target he needs to complete the truck.

Thus, a shorter cycle means he is saving labor time for him and the truck driver, and fuel as he is not carrying more material to the hauling unit than he needs.

And he is not running the risk of dumping too much material into the truck,” says Schmidtgall.

Hauling unit scale systems not only allow operators to monitor how much payload they have on board. They also provide managers with an overall production picture such as average payload, cumulative production totals, fleet production totals and overall payload trends. This information gives managers the ability to optimize fleets and improve operational efficiencies for better profitability.

“With Volvo Load Assist for L110H to L260H wheel loaders available through the optional Volvo Co-Pilot, operations can use telematics programs such as CareTrack or upload data to the cloud to monitor total production and fuel consumption remotely,” says Yeomans. “An onboard weighing system is also standard for all Volvo articulated hauler models ranging from A35G through A60H in North American markets, so the cost to the end user is minimal when compared to the benefits of having the system.” ET

Integrated systems allow change decisions with full cost data, and help eliminate the need for future orders.

C

hange orders, which can throw projects off schedule and cost contractors money, are just part of the business. Or are they? EYA, a Washington, D.C.-area builder and developer of luxury townhomes and communities, is analyzing trends in its project management system to reduce change orders in future projects.

Pete Zafros, EYA’s director of technology, came on board in 2013 and oversaw implementation of the Procore project management system soon afterward. Its inherent project data centralization empowers project managers to manage budgets, assess potential change orders and be aware of the status of all in-process change orders in real time, with an eye on maintaining target profit margins.

Zafros says that integrating EYA’s accounting enterprise resource planning system into the process was the final piece needed to achieve inter-company collaboration. Now project managers can track their projects’ profitability in real time, as well as forecast upcoming costs in later phases, giving them more decision-making insight. EYA compares the cost data with its budgets, makes design changes based on project profitability and uses Procore to communicate with its subcontractors.

when the project manager is aware of pending major changes to structures. According to Zafros, this real-time visibility helps the project manager decide whether or not the latitude exists to make additional changes.

Even more important, EYA can now analyze historical project data and preempt some change orders on future projects.

“Procore has recognized that change orders are symptoms of a change event; they’re not the root cause,” Zafros says. He adds that every change event in the system has a change reason such as the specificity of EYA’s drawings or jurisdictional code changes.

“That helps us to focus on where we can prevent changes from happening in the first place, or at least be more aware of the costs and not have as many

of them,” Zafros says. “We’re focused on the construction changes and the design activities that drive change — not contracts and change orders, as the industry has been for a long time.”

Contractors have the ability to document change events, categorize the reasons underlying the events and create customized change event reports. Through categorization, they can identify trends and take corrective action.

For example, if drawings are the cause of most change orders over a particular period or on a given project, the contractor can address the issues with the drafting department.

LEARNING ON A CURVE During its implementation, an implementation manager from Procore determined which system tools would give EYA the quickest “time to value,” and trained the trainer (Zafros) on how to use them. “We focused on our fieldcentric capabilities — our drawings, RFIs and specifications — to really make sure the guys in the field had the proper information to

Zafros used the “technology adoption curve” from Everett Rogers’ Diffusion of Innovations as his guide for implementing the system. The technology adoption curve groups adopters of an innovation according to their willingness to try them.

Typically, “Innovators” who like trying out new things for the inherent enjoyment of doing so learned how to use a tool, then cascaded the knowledge to “Early Adopters,” who were more selective and therefore well respected.

One by one, the “Early Majority,” “Late Majority” and “Laggards” were trained on how to use a given tool.

Zafros facilitated this “cascade of knowledge” throughout EYA by starting with employees with greater aptitude and motivation to learn the system, and having them share their knowledge with others who were further behind the curve. In just a couple of months, field crews got used to accessing key project information on their iPads and iPhones and the payback was immediate.

By the end of the year, the system was fully incorporated into operations.

“I think that, many times, people get focused on the hardest part first. That’s not always the best way to roll out new software and changes,” Zafros says.

“You want to focus on getting some victories and prove value.

And you have to remember that every person is different. If we treated everybody the same, we were not going to have the success we wanted.” ET

from Construction Interns An internship program can be an effective strategy for future growth.

A

growing number of companies have realized the benefits of bringing an internship program to their organization. Larger contractors have used interns for years, but the experience has become more common for contractors no matter their size.

Yet, for all the benefits that an internship program can bring to an organization, few companies really exhaust efforts to make the experience all that it can be. If you believe internships are worth the effort, the program should be viewed as part of your company’s strategy to grow by finding future workers and leaders.

Whether you are interested in starting an internship program or want to upgrade your current efforts, here are some tips to help you move forward.

CANDIDATES 1 INTERVIEW AS IF YOU WERE HIRING

Asking the local college to send over a few candidates to intern with you is not going to help identify the best candidate. You must plan to interview intern candidates in the same manner that you might interview any job candidate. While the questions may be different, you need to prepare by interviewing the candidate to determine their aptitude and attitude. Anything less than this level of commitment and you will only succeed in bringing in short-term administrative assistants.

TRAIN AND COMMIT 2 IDENTIFY, AN INTERN “POINT OF CONTACT”

I conduct training for many contractors on how to be a leader to an intern. But first, a company needs to identify the right candidate to be an intern point of contact, or IPC. This person needs to be someone who will oversee and coach the intern

on their role, responsibilities and job expectations.

The IPC needs to be trained on how to interact with an intern; address improvements when needed; and even determine if the individual should be a future candidate for employment. Finally, the IPC needs to be fully committed to fulfilling all that is needed to make the intern’s experience enjoyable, educational and encouraging. It is quite common for contractors to hire people who may have served an internship while they were in college.

GOALS AND 3 DEVELOP EXIT STRATEGIES

During the interview the intern should be told they will have goals set if they are selected, and these goals should be outlined to them on their first day with your company. The goals might be reflective of what the IPC believes the intern should be striving to achieve during the time period of the internship.

Once the intern has been around for a few weeks, the IPC should sit down with them and begin to map out some exit strategies for his or her departure. The exit strategies might be a continuation of the goals, but they may also include other achievements the IPC believes the intern is capable of finishing prior to the internship’s completion.

The exit strategies might include having the intern prepare for and make a presentation to senior leaders on the experience with the company.

Or it may include having the intern complete some written exercise that has lasting value, such as a standard operating procedure, software instructional book, etc.

THEIR INTERESTS THEM SOME AUTHORITY 4 MATCH AND EDUCATIONAL DESIRE 5 GIVE AND RESPONSIBILITY

To gain the best from your intern, it will be important to match their focus with something that will interest them and provide some educational value.

Part of any internship should include introducing the intern to some of the realities of construction or the specialty of your organization. It is also wise to ask the intern what area captures their interest.

The intern’s interest should be discussed during the interviewing phase, before they are extended an offer to spend their internship

If you are to give an intern a great experience by educating them on how the “real world” works, you will need to invest some authority and responsibility into their time spent with you. Short of them running the company, you can still empower them to make certain decisions that do not require them to ask permission. Remember, interns always have their IPC to throw ideas at and who can counsel them on better options.

Giving the intern a clear description of their role and the responsibilities that go with

Not only will this meet their need, it also sends them back to school with a positive attitude and experience with your company — something they will brag about to their academic advisor and to any peers interested in a future internship.

recommend that a regular schedule of more formal follow-up meetings be arranged between the intern, IPC and other company leaders.

The other company leaders might include the owner, a more senior leader and a human resource manager. Conducting the follow-ups with such a diverse group will reinforce the commitment that your company has to making the intern, and the internship program, a satisfying experience for both the intern and the company.

A TEAM EXERCISE 7 CREATE THAT THE INTERN LEADS

One of the most interesting and beneficial observations I have made of companies with great internship programs is engaging the intern in creating and facilitating a team-based exercise. The exercise might be job related or team-building related.

It’s not critical what the exercise is. Rather, the exercise will provide the intern with the chance to facilitate a meeting that they control, thus providing an opportunity for you to monitor just how well they do in a mixed group of individuals.

THE INTERN CASUAL 8 ENSURE TIME WITH THE TEAM

Only so much can be learned about an intern during the work day. Encourage grabbing a cup of coffee with them, taking them to lunch every few weeks or getting them out for an evening with one or more of the company employees. Taking the intern to a more relaxing environment will allow them to share more freely how they are doing, what types of things they feel they are learning and if they have any ideas or recommendations to share about the internship experience.

THE INTERNSHIP 9 ASSESS FOR ALL INVOLVED PARTIES

By the end of the internship process, it will be important to capture any lessons learned and opportunities for improvement that can be gained.

Often, a company will only ask the intern about their experience. I recommend you also include those who were part of the internship program, whether directly (IPC) or indirectly.

Gathering feedback from multiple perspectives can contribute to strengthening the internship program.

MAKE IT A WIN-WIN Internships are a great way for you to catch a close-up view of some of tomorrow’s workforce.

They’re a chance to: ˜˜ see what sort of talent is out there to hire;

˜˜ challenge your staff to

recognize the importance of working with younger employees;

˜˜ become more sensitive

to how your company “on-boards” new workers;

˜˜ and assess how effective the company is at training and development.

Internships are not about giving a college student an easy go of it — allowing them to spend eight, 12 or even 16 weeks or more just hanging out. The internship should be viewed as an honor to experience and an awakening to how hard great companies work to be successful.

WITH BUILD LIKE A GIRL EVENT

In 2016, Miron Construction Co., Inc. held its first Build Like a Girl event, inviting 30 girls in 7th to 10th grade to learn about careers in construction and opportunities for women in the industry. The event featured female industry professionals who shared their experiences and knowledge with the young participants.

On June 23, 2017, Miron held its second annual event, and again, Build Like a Girl participants 30 participants had a chance to not only learn about opportunities in had the chance to operate a crane construction but also get hands-on experiences. Some of the particiand a boom lift. pants were returning attendees who came back because they enjoyed the previous year’s event so much.

Participants started their day at Miron’s Neenah, WI, headquarters by hearing from women in the construction field talk about their professional experiences. They also heard about industry topics including typical wages, apprenticeship opportunities and safety.

The afternoon was more hands-on. Miron tradespeople walked the participants through different stations at a temporary jobsite, including concrete, carpentry, masonry and equipment operation. Participants also had the chance to operate a crane and a boom lift, as well as pour and finish a concrete slab.

With Build Like a Girl, Miron hopes to “bulldoze” the stereotype that women don’t belong in the construction industry. “One thing that is critical in this effort is for the girls to see female professionals in the field,” says Dave Walsh, Miron’s vice president, Human Resources. “This year, we made a concerted effort to have female presenters, female mentors and female group leaders. Females took the lead and ran the show.”

One of the presenters was Rebecca White, a union carpenter who has worked with Miron for nine years. White answered participants’ questions, explained her work as a carpenter, attended the jobsite tour and showed attendees her daily tools. “I participated in last year’s event and really enjoyed sharing my experiences with the girls. I was happy that the planning committee for this year’s event asked me to participate again,” she comments.

“I feel that it is very important that the girls actually see and hear from other females who Masonry skills is one of the hands- work in the field,” she continues. “If I can share my experiences on stations offered to participants. or answer questions for the girls and it gives any of them the extra boost in the right direction, it is well worth it. I think it’s great to show the girls that other females are making a great living by working in the construction field.”

The Build Like a Girl event has been well received from all angles. “We received very positive feedback from the girls who attended. The craftspeople who helped teach the girls also enjoyed the energy and enthusiasm of the attendees,” says Walsh.

“We hope this will become an annual event for Miron,” he adds. “The girls seem excited to learn about construction. And to have them consider joining the professional trades is a win for our industry as a whole and for Miron as a growing company.”

ased on what you see and hear in various media outlets, there is a real mess left behind by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. It’s hard to imagine what residents and business owners in the areas affected are going through.

But no matter how you look at the post-hurricane landscape, we all realize there are not enough resources in those areas to repair and rebuild the cities that were damaged. I’m confident that we will be hearing a big sucking sound representing all the equipment and workers leaving the northern states and heading south. This could be either a good thing or a bad thing depending on how well you plan the perceived work.

Those of you planning to look into work down south have a substantial amount of planning to do to ensure you can make a buck on this venture. You need to at least be able to assess your progress to date and, if need be, pick up your toys and get out of Dodge before you lose your backside.

There is definitely a lot of work to be had, and the pricing should be good, but the efficiency you are accustomed to may be lacking because of the chaos going on down there. Thinking out loud, here are some topics you need to consider before embarking on an expensive move of equipment and manpower to Texas or Florida.

THERE IS DEFINITELY A LOT OF WORK TO BE HAD, AND THE PRICING SHOULD BE GOOD, BUT THE EFFICIENCY YOU ARE ACCUSTOMED TO MAY BE LACKING BECAUSE OF THE CHAOS GOING ON DOWN THERE.

WHO WILL YOU BE WORKING FOR AND ARE FUNDS IN PLACE? I thought I would start with the biggest elephant in the room, and that is who are you contracting with to do the work? This is a big question. Do they have the capital available to fund the work? Are they waiting for a payment from an insurance company? Are they insured and bonded?

No matter who you are working with or for, some extra attention has to be paid to determine that the financing is in place and, if it is, that it will not be diverted to start another project mid-stream. There is no doubt that the financing process will not be a smooth one. You don’t want to run into jobs that are still in the process of getting funding.

HOW WILL YOU MANAGE EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES? These are not normal markets you will be working in. Supplies (if there are any left) will be hard to come by and you can expect the pricing to be set to the market. So, where do you get what you need to do the work? You could bring inventory with you. Or you can have a supply chain running from outlying cities and distribution points that bring in daily or weekly shipments, with the additional cost included in your bid estimate.

In terms of equipment, you can bring and fix your own. (I doubt you will find working rental units available for anything close to what you’re paying back home.) However, bringing your own equipment means transportation and maintenance costs. Who is going to fix them?

If you bring a tech with you, he/she will need shop supplies, tools and a place to do the work, which may be tough to find. Is there any doubt that repair work lead times will be in the 30+ day column?

IS ADDITIONAL COVERAGE OR LICENSING REQUIRED? If you’re planning to work outside of your ordinary sphere of influence, determine if you need to be licensed in the area you plan to work in. Will you need bonding?

I suspect you will also need to have a chat with your insurance agent and inform him/her of what you plan to do and where you plan to do it. Will you have to adjust your coverage limits? Are there any additional risks you need to cover? Will workman’s comp rates be different? What you don’t want to do is increase your risk quotient and expose your company simply to acquire additional revenue that is not material to your annual revenues.

WHAT IS THE POTENTIAL TAX BURDEN? You didn’t think I would forget about the potential tax burden associated with work in “new” states where you have now created a “nexus” for yourself.

There is potential income tax, sales tax, use tax, personal property tax — the list goes on and on. And you can bet the farm that every state will be geared up to find you and tax you. How else are they going to make up for the lost revenue they’re incurring because local residents and businesses are not working or able to do business?

A call to an accountant who knows state and local taxes, and has friends in the states where you plan to work, is almost certainly a “must.”

GIVE THOUGHT TO PLANNING AND MANAGING All these issues will be time consuming and costly. In addition, you are expected to: ˜˜ manage your team under very tough conditions, ˜˜ keep track of your budget and expenses, ˜˜ provide the necessary paperwork to get paid ˜˜ and, above all, make this endeavor profitable for both your workers and your company.

The citizens in Texas and Florida need your expertise to help restore the area and it’s great that you are considering going down there. Yet, no matter who you are or how big your company is, taking on disaster recovery work requires more thought and planning than a typical job outside of your standard work area. Make sure you do your homework and get the help you need to properly plan and manage the work. ET
