Fatality Study Aims to Improve Safety

EARLIER THIS YEAR, THE Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) unveiled a report highlighting the results of a comprehensive study of every construction fatality that took place over a three-year period. The study’s intent was to identify methods that can help construction firms prevent workplace fatalities and injuries.

“We all share a common goal: getting to zero construction fatalities,” said Stephen E. Sandherr, the association’s CEO. “This report offers the kind of data and recommendations needed to help construction firms achieve that goal.”

It achieves this by helping contractors to understand why, when and how construction fatalities occur — particularly

crucial during this period of expanding construction activity and employment.

Much of the study’s results confirm past findings. Falls were still the leading cause of deaths, accounting for 33% of all industry fatalities; transportation incidents were close behind at 29%. The heavy and civil sector had the highest annual fatality rate (24 per 100,000 workers), while specialty trades accounted for significantly more fatalities than any other sector, with 56% of jobsite deaths.

There were also some surprises that challenge long-held assumptions. For example, while prior research indicated most construction fatalities occur in the morning, the current study showed noon as the deadliest time frame. Thus, the AGC is now advising contractors to hold safety talks and stretching sessions when workers return from the 11 a.m. to noon lunch breaks common on many sites.

And while you may assume most fatalities occur among the youngest, least experienced workers, 50% of fatal incidents were among workers 35 to 54 years of age, with the peak among workers age 65 or older (19 deaths per 100,000 workers per year). The study also challenges the assumption that Hispanic workers are disproportionately more likely to be the victims of fatal incidents. In fact, they account for 24% of the national construction workforce and 25% of all construction fatalities. As such, the AGC advises safety programs be crafted for the entire workforce rather than targeted to specific demographic segments.

New data further shows small construction firms with fewer than 10 employees account for 47% of fatalities and the highest fatality rate at 26 per 100,000 workers annually. (Most previous studies did not include firms in this size range.) The AGC speculates this may be due to a lack of full-time safety and health staff at the smallest firms. As such, where possible, it recommends prime contractors take the lead in instilling a safety culture among subcontractors working on their jobsites.

While the findings of the study are themselves quite fascinating, the real value of the report lies in the analysis and subsequent actionable recommendations provided for intervention and hopefully prevention of fatal incidents. everal different truck configurations are capable of delivering asphalt to a paver. End dump trucks and live bottom trucks can unload directly into the paver.

Live bottom trucks have a conveyor system that moves the load directly to the paver without segregation. Belly dump trailers deposit material in a windrow, so the mix must be picked up by another machine, such as a material transfer vehicle, before it goes into the paver.

But the goal with any asphalt delivery system is to maximize the quantity of asphalt delivered to the asphalt paver while minimizing cycle times. The more asphalt that a truck can carry per load, the better – assuming the load can be unloaded into the paver or in front of a material transfer vehicle without disrupting paving operations.

Every truck is limited to a maximum weight it can carry.

Limitations are either based on the total Gross Combination Vehicle Weight (GCW) or on each axle and axle group depending upon applicable state or federal regulations. The limits are based on the number of axles and their spacing.

The Federal Bridge Formula is used to calculate weight limits on the national highway system.

By using pusher axles, you can increase the payload using the bridge formula. A typical dump truck with three or four axles spread over 20 ft. is typically limited to 51,000 lbs. GCW. A trailing axle offers a greater payload increase using the bridge formula because it increases the overall length of the truck. If the trailing axle stretches the axle length to 36 ft., the truck can have an 80,000-lb. GCW. But not every state adheres to the Federal Bridge Formula.

Lift axles can help achieve maximum productivity depending on state weight regulations. “Pusher

and tag axles better distribute weight and help optimize steer axle weights, along with meeting bridge law requirements,” says Alan Haggai, marketing communications manager, Freightliner.

“State weight limits often limit effectiveness of multiple lift axles.” Laws in some states make a regular tri-axle, quad dump or Simple 16 truck the most costeffective option.

Research applicable regulations in all areas you plan to operate before spec’ing the wheel configuration. “In many states, adding lift axles does increase the payload, but local bridge and weight laws can be complex,” says Tim Wrinkle, construction product manager, Mack Trucks. He advises contacting your local dealer and

relying on its expert knowledge of local laws, as well as those from neighboring areas where you may operate.

THE CASE FOR SUPER DUMPS In areas that do adhere to the Federal Bridge Formula, a Super Dump can be an effective alternative. With these vehicles, a trailing axle increases the overall length of the truck to maximize the payload, yet folds out of the way for maneuverability on the jobsite. The Super Dump can also have up to three pusher axles. This can increase the maximum load to the 80,000lb. limit.

Super Dumps are capable of hauling payloads from 19 to 26 tons, if you can properly distribute the loads to each axle. A

typical tandem dump truck is limited to about a 13-ton payload in accordance with federal bridge law.

Increased truck capacity is important when directly unloading into the asphalt paver. The paver must be stopped each time another truck is backed up. With more asphalt payload, you spend more time paving throughout the work day.

Tacoma, WA-based Tucci & Sons uses Kenworth T880 Super Dumps to deliver asphalt for its paving division. These trucks compliment a fleet of tractors and end dump trailers and transfer trucks. The Super Dumps are spec’d with the PACCAR MX-13 engine rated at 500 hp and 1,850 lbs.-ft. of torque. They achieve a 25-ton capacity by

utilizing three 8,000-lb. Watson & Chalin Tru-Track Alumilite steerable lift axles and an 8,000lb. steerable flying tag axle to meet Federal Bridge Formula requirements and increase the trucks’ GCW to 80,000 lbs.

“Depending upon the location of the paving project, we’ve found that in many cases our T880 Super Dumps can haul up to 10% more asphalt in a single day than the end dump trailers they replaced,” says Tim Tucci, secretary/treasurer and fleet operations manager, Tucci & Sons.

When a driver delivers asphalt using a dump truck and end dump trailer, he must first empty the end dump. Then he gets out of the truck, unhitches the trailer, dumps the load in the bed of the truck and re-hitches the end

dump to the truck before he can return to the plant. Tucci says that entire process can take from 20 minutes to half an hour.

“Drivers in our T880 Super Dumps can deliver their loads to the jobsites, dump them and then go right back to our Lakewood or Tacoma plant for another load,” says Tucci. The Super Dumps are also more maneuverable than the trucks and trailers. They measure 40 ft. from the front bumper to the rear steerable axle, while the tractor and end dump combination comes in at 75 ft. This is important when paving in tighter urban areas.

One compromise is maneuverability. With a Super Dump, you may not have the maneuverability of a tandem axle dump

truck. “If you are doing a culde-sac, you may not be able to maneuver that large truck,” says Chad Semler, director of product marketing for severe service trucks, Navistar. “You may have to use smaller trucks.”

CUT WEIGHT TO INCREASE PAYLOAD

There are many ways to reduce weight and increase payload. One is to not overbuild the truck.

“From a chassis perspective, you want to have the most efficient truck,” says Semler.

“Weight plays a critical role because you want to be able to haul as much weight as possible in each load to minimize your loads. So you want to have a chassis that is strong enough to carry the load, but not overweight either.”

The frame is one area where weight can be saved in an asphalt application. “With our new HX line, we have a 1/2-in.-thick frame rail,” says Semler. “It is a 3.5-million RBM frame rail and takes the place of a very common 10-in. frame rail that would be used in a dump truck appli— Alan Haggai, cation. In addition, with a standard double rail frame, the reinforcement rail stops under the cab. With the 1/2-in. single rail application, that strength goes all the way through the front of the truck. The single frame rail also eliminates the corrosion jacking that occurs in a double frame rail when subjected to moisture.

Mack’s Wrinkle expresses a similar sentiment, noting, “Our most popular frame rail setup on a dump is an 11.1 x 300 mm (7/16” x 11.8”) rail without liner.”

Whether or not the single rail solution

will work in your application depends upon a number of factors. “State regulations are going to play a big part in your configuration, which can also affect your frame and how much you can haul. Every state is different,” says Semler.

Another area where you can save weight and boost fuel efficiency is engine selection.

Weight and fuel economy both suffer if you spec more engine than the job demands. Asphalt trucks spend a lot of time on the road; therefore, fuel economy has more of an impact on operating costs.

“Spec enough torque to effectively do the job but not more power than needed so as to not degrade fuel economy,” Haggai advises. “A Detroit DD13 between 450 and 470 hp is an excellent choice for most asphalt applications.”

Look closely at the weights of the specific engines being compared, as some engines are heavier than others. “When you go from a 15-liter down to our 12.4-liter, you are going to lose about 500 lbs.,” says Navistar’s Semler. “That 500 lbs. then becomes additional payload that you can carry. The difference going from our 12.4-liter to an 11-liter is much smaller — around 200 lbs. depending upon which 11-liter engine you choose.”

Geography makes a big difference in engine selection, as well. “In some states, if you are running on a really flat surface

and you want to maximize payload, there are a few applications where you can get by with a 9-liter engine and shed even more weight for that capacity,” says Semler. However, he cautions that you do give up durability and longevity because the engine works much harder.

“But in some cases the economics pays for itself.”

“However, these suspensions can be limited in articulation and stability. Driver knowledge and training is also very important with air suspensions, as drivers need to evacuate air bags before dumping the load. Depending on the setup and a driver’s experience, this can slow the dumping process.”

Suspension choice impacts both stability and operator comfort. “We are seeing air ride suspension spec’d occasionally,” says Haggai. “Some operators prefer the stability of non-air ride units. Freightliner Tufftrack offers a good ride, excellent articulation and stability.”

“Mechanical suspensions are still the most popular in dump models, thanks to the great stability, articulation and maintainability,” Wrinkle notes. For example, Mack’s Camelback and mRIDE rear suspensions offer increased articulation and stability.

“Air ride suspensions have become more popular recently, as they offer a better ride when unloaded,” he continues.

The Haulmaxx suspension has evolved over time. “There have been a lot of advancements in rubber suspensions in the past several years,” notes Semler.

“Hendrickson developed a spring that has a hollow section that really helps the unladen ride quality. Once you load the truck, the hollow space disappears and you have the full load on the rubber spring.”

GEAR FOR SUCCESS With automated manual transmissions (AMTs) quickly becoming the dominant transmission in the dump truck market, you will want to ensure the AMTs in your trucks are compatible with asphalt paving applications.

“One of the most important components to consider when looking at efficiency in vocational trucks is the transmission,”

“In general, a dump truck equipped with an mDRIVE HD 12-speed AMT already achieves better fuel efficiency compared to the same truck equipped with a conventional automatic transmission, thanks to the inherent efficiency benefits,” says Wrinkle.

“That same truck could also see additional improvements in fuel efficiency by spec’ing an mDRIVE HD 13- or 14-speed AMT and selecting the proper rear axle ratios for performance both on the highway and on the jobsite.” For example, the company recommends using

ratios around 3.40 to 3.80 on dumps equipped with these transmissions.

Another consideration is asphalt trucks can spend a significant portion of their time backing up to the paver. “A truck spec’d with multi-speed reverse can be important to reverse quickly on the long stretches that you have to back into,” says Wrinkle. “The mDRIVE HD with creeper gears offers up to four reverse gears to get you in position quickly and safely.”

When a truck is pushed by an asphalt paver, you never want to hit the brakes. “When spec’ing a truck that will be pushed by an asphalt paver, you need to make sure the transmission can go from being pushed in neutral to shifting to drive without having to apply the brakes and stop the paver,” says Wrinkle. “Thanks to our fully integrated powertrain, we’re able to provide application-specific mDRIVE features like Rolling Start for our paving customers. Rolling Start allows drivers to shift the transmission into drive without pressing the truck’s service brakes, eliminating the possibility of creating a bump in the paving surface, which is a critical benefit for customers with paving applications.”

But AMTs are only one of the choices available. “The spec must strike a balance between low speed startability and efficiency at highway speed,” says Haggai. “Automatics and automated manuals continue to gain popularity, but many operators still prefer a manual.”

Also consider component layout if the asphalt truck is going to be pushed by the paver. “You have to pay attention to your brakes and your brake chamber locations,” says Semler. Dump trucks that are not in paving applications often have brake chambers that stick out past the tire envelope. “The asphalt paver would actually crash into your brakes.” And it has happened.

“We have an asphalt braking package that flips the brake chambers up and tucks them inside the tire envelope,” says Semler. “When you back up to a paver, there is nothing that sticks out further than the envelope of the tires that would cause a problem with the paver.”

Another consideration for asphalt trucks is an exhaust configuration to accommodate heated truck bodies, where the engine exhaust is circulated though the dump bed. ET

lectrohydraulic (EH) excavator controls allow response rates, flows, pressures and even control preferences to be tailored through in-cab monitors. While beneficial to all excavators, midsize and larger excavators are leading the way forward.

“There has been a trend toward advanced hydraulic control technology on larger excavators because the cost of parts for the advanced hydraulic control technology was relatively cheaper on the larger models than the compact units when considering the whole product’s cost,” says Sejong Ko, product manager, Volvo Construction Equipment.

“Excavators are all tool carriers no matter the size — that means advanced auxiliary control technology makes economic sense in certain size classes, but will do well on other sizes later.”

There is a definite advantage to controlling flow and pressure based on demand. “On the jobsite, excavators should move the boom, arm, tracks and/or swing joint at the same time when an attachment is in use,” says Ko. “With EH control, the machine can calculate and provide the best distribution of hydraulic power between the actuators and attachment. Operators can adjust and set a priority for the attachment.”

“EH controls — particularly the EH attachment controls — allow the operator to run the machine with the controls at his fingertips, either proportionally or ‘on/off ’,” says George Lumpkins, national service manager, Kobelco USA. This choice adapts the excavator to the attachment being used.

Doosan machines feature the ability to rotate the portion of the joystick that contains the buttons and sliders. This changes the direction of the slider and makes operation more natural.

“Proportional control is particularly important for some attachments, such as the thumb, whereas the ‘on/off ’ is more useful for breakers and compactors,” says Jeff Fletcher, service trainer, Kobelco USA.

STORED SETTINGS REDUCE WORKLOAD Many adjustments can be made through Doosan’s in-cab monitors. “Probably the biggest one is the ability to control and pre-program five one-way flow attachments and two twoway flow attachments,” says Lee Smith, excavator product specialist. In addition to optimizing flows and pressures for each attachment, you can program the engine speed range for the machine with that attachment.

“It is a real time-saving feature for an operator who is switching

between a number of different attachments throughout the course of a week.”

Volvo midsize excavators allow selection of a hammer/shear function, preferred hydraulic pressure (maximum pressure) and primary auxiliary flow and secondary auxiliary flow for attachments to be controlled through the incab monitor. “The hammer/ shear function (primary auxiliary pressure set between high and low pressure) is to operate attachments requiring relatively high hydraulic flow such as hammers, shears and thumbs,” says Ko. “The secondary auxiliary flow is the auxiliary hydraulic line to operate attachments that require constant flow, which is relatively lower than primary

auxiliary flow. This is perfect for attachments such as rotators, mowers and hydraulic magnets. Operators can select one of three response modes for both machine response and secondary auxiliary response — active, normal and soft.” With the response modes, operators can adjust the movement sensitivity.

Operators can also be assured that the machine is set up properly when using stored settings from an onboard monitor. “You are not going to overpower attachments or have too much pressure for a cylinder on that attachment,” says Smith. By setting everything up properly inside the monitor, you help ensure optimal performance.

This saves attachment installation time, as well. With saved attachment settings, hooking up the attachment and hoses is now the bulk of the work. “After the attachment and hoses are hooked

still like this function because the in-cab monitor setting allows operators to set up pressure and flow in greater detail.”

“Kobelco excavators can control auxiliary flow for both one-way and two-way attachments,” says Lumpkins. “On mid-size excavators, you can set 10 bidirectional attachment pressure and flow settings, as well as 10 single-directional attachment pressure and flow settings.”

Without advanced in-cab controls, the flows and pressures would have to be manually adjusted.

CUSTOMIZED CONTROLS SIMPLIFY OPERATION

Many excavator manufacturers, including Volvo and Kobelco, offer up to 20 different settings in the monitors for increased efficiency. “The benefits are numerous for customers who need to switch attachments frequently,” says Volvo’s Ko. “Special application customers, such as those who perform demolition, like to preset hydraulic pressure and flow for their multiple attachments. In addition, some customers don’t need to switch attachments, but

There are many ways manufacturers capitalize on EH control capabilities. “For us, it has been the ability to combine features and functions of the joysticks with the monitor,” says Aaron Kleingartner, marketing manager, Doosan.

Doosan excavators feature the ability to rotate the portion of the joystick that contains the buttons and sliders. The machine comes standard with buttons on the left-hand side of the joystick and the slider on the top. “The slider moves from left to right.

So if you were running a tilting bucket, that side-to-side slider would be intuitive to the operator,” Kleingartner explains.

The joystick section can also be rotated. If you are running a clamp or a thumb, this allows the slider to move up and down on the joystick. “It is going to move in the same direction as the clamp is going to open or close,” says Kleingartner. “That also turns your button to the side, but it is a little more intuitive with our operators.”

The ability to store settings and customize controls proves beneficial to both operators and owners. “It is a benefit to the operator sitting in the cab that they can operate how they prefer, and it is a benefit to the owner who has made an investment in that machine that they are getting the life out of the machine and the attachment,” says Kleingartner.

CONTINUOUS FLOW CONTROL OPTIONS TAILOR APPLICATION Excavator monitors allow the operator to customize how the machine works with continuous flow attachments. The operator usually has the option to use the slider, proportional switch

or push button for continuous work.

Volvo excavators also adjust the response mode for the attachment, allowing a choice between soft, normal or active response.

Doosan excavators provide the ability to modify or select the way the operator would like the detent button to operate.

For instance, when operating a breaker, some operators want the breaker to engage only when a button is held; others want the breaker engaged when a button is pushed and for it to continue to cycle until it is pushed again.

“If operators are fairly new to running a breaker, they may want it to only engage when they are holding the button,” says Smith. “Those who are more experienced in operating that machine may want the breaker to stay engaged and turn it on and off just with the push of a button. They don’t want to hold the button the whole time they are operating.”

He adds, “Other functions that we can change through the monitor are the ability to operate two-way hydraulics either through a button on the joystick or a pedal on the floor.

There are operators who definitely have a preference when running thumb or clamp attachments.”

MONITORS OFFER INSIGHT Of course, the onboard monitors do much more than control auxiliary hydraulics.

“Productivity can be increased by monitoring traveling hours, idling hours, digging hours and machine work load,” says Lumpkins. “Productivity can also be increased by monitoring maintenance intervals. General maintenance items can be scheduled so that they don’t interrupt production.

“Since Kobelco excavators have three different work modes, productivity can be maintained for the task being performed while also decreasing operating cost,” he continues. “All of this information can be viewed remotely through a computer, tablet or smartphone using our KOMEXS system.”

The monitors on Doosan excavators can be used to track how long the machine has been operating in one-way or two-way mode. “The benefit ties back to the primary use of the machine, giving the owner/operator a picture of the total hours and the

usage,” says Kleingartner. “If you track it even further back with the fuel tracking on our machines, it can allow the owner/ operator the ability to better bid projects. If you know a machine has been working 50 hours in one-way mode, you can track that fuel usage. When you bid, you will know what your fuel costs are going forward.”

You can track how many hours the excavators were used in each of the various work modes. “This gives you the ability to understand the machine itself, and also gives an owner the ability to understand the different operators, what their preferences are and how they like to operate those machines,” says Kleingartner.

CONTROL TECHNOLOGY GOES COMPACT Many compact excavators now benefit from the same technologies adopted for mid-size and larger models.

“The technology previously seen on large excavators — such as lift overload monitors, depth control systems and auxiliary flow rate controls — is filtering through to the compact market,” says Thomas Clapton, product sales engineer - compact excavator global growth, JCB. “Much of this technology migration has occurred in machines around 8,800 lbs. and above, where operators require enhanced efficiency and the versatility to work with a wide range of hydraulic attachments. There is a natural point at which the cost of advanced hydraulic features stops being economical, especially in machines smaller than 4,400 lbs.”

JCB has implemented EH technology on the dozer controls for the 8,800- to 21,500-lb. range and the auxiliary/boom swing controls for the 8,800- to 13,000-lb. machines. “This has a substantial impact on the control of attachments in applications demanding precision and accuracy, such as grading, picking and

placing and excavating around buried services.”

In-cab monitors are also increasing the capabilities of smaller machines. “The new generation of JCB compact excavators provide the operators with full control of all hydraulic functions — including auxiliary controls, hydraulic quick hitch and auto venting — via in-cab monitors,” says Clapton. “In addition, the operator can use the main display monitor to set hydraulic flow rates on both the high/low-flow

double and single auxiliary circuits.”

With in-cab monitors, operators can now swap attachments without a need for time-consuming calibration.

excavators,” says Jeff Jacobsmeyer, Kubota product manager for excavators, wheel loaders and TLBs. “EH controls have made the machines more friendly and efficient for operators.

For example, a simple thumb switch is now used where a foot pedal or lever once was. Adjustments for flows are done electronically from the cab without having to use tools or flow meters to set the correct amount needed.”

Cost is a critical consideration when adding such features to smaller models.

“Manufacturers do their best to make this technology available and affordable for the smaller compact units,” says Jacobsmeyer. “As technology changes, sometimes it becomes less expensive for manufacturers to add these features in smaller machines.”

Kubota has chosen to use an in-cab monitor to control the AUX flow rates on several models in its compact excavator line. “Operators have the ability to ‘dial in’ the auxiliary flow needed for particular attachments,” says Jacobsmeyer. For example, a hydraulic breaker/hammer will need maximum one-way flow compared to a two-way thumb or tilt bucket operation.

One difference on the company’s machines is that the pressure stays constant. The adjustment is also more precise than just a High, Medium or Low setting. “The AUX flow setting is variable to assure the best results for the attachment needs, and the flow can be controlled separately for both one-way and two-way operations,” says Jacobsmeyer.

Kubota also offers five stored presets on many of its models. Dash icons are used as an indicator for the attachment that is desired. “When the operators install a breaker, they can simply select the breaker icon and the preset memory is ready to supply the proper flow for maximum efficiency to the attachment,” Jacobsmeyer points out. “Switch to another attachment, maybe an auger, select the proper icon and it is ready to go to work.”

Some attachments see greater benefit from fine control adjustments.

“Two-way controlled cylinder operations may benefit the most,” Jacobsmeyer comments. “The return stroke of a cylinder is faster because of less displacement. With the flow control for separate operations, the operation for open and closed can be perfectly matched. For example, the speed of a thumb can be programmed to open and close at the same speed and precision.” ET

PAVE A ROAD TO THE FUTURE Contractors should start positioning themselves for infrastructure upgrades in preparation for self-driving vehicles.

G

iven the auto industry’s embrace of self-driving technology, new research suggests that children born today may never have to get behind the wheel of a vehicle.

“My own prediction is that kids born today will never get to drive a car,” Henrik Christensen, director of the University of San Diego’s Contextual Robotics Institute, told the San Diego Union-Tribune in mid-December 2016.

“Autonomous, driverless cars are not 10, 15 years out. All the automotive companies — Daimler, GM, Ford — are saying that within five years they will have autonomous, driverless cars on the road.”

So what does that mean for our roads? Upgrades, and sooner rather than later. “This transition is happening a lot quicker than we anticipated,” says Ronique Day, a government transportation analyst in Virginia, one of

several states studying ways for roads and cars to communicate.

States across the country are following suit, installing digital signage above lanes that will aid in communication when self-driving cars become an everyday reality. The signs are a first step toward what highway planners say is a future in which self-driving cars will

infrastructure behind autonomous vehicles is lacking, having been built into just a few miles of highway in a handful of states.

Technological advances have created new opportunities for addressing the challenges.

HOW WILL IT BE DONE? The first step will be deciding how to communicate with cars as

highways should look to the states that are currently piloting studies on their roadways, including Virginia, California and Utah. Utah is undertaking a test of the technology on a stretch of Salt Lake City’s Redwood Road, a major northsouth commuter route. Sensors on traffic lights connect to public buses and can adjust red and green signals to help buses stay on schedule.

But highway researchers say the biggest hurdle is ensuring they have technology that can work. Thus far, road connections to cars have mostly used dedicated shortrange communications (DSRC), a wireless link commonly used in transportation systems to manage stoplights and tolling.

Researchers say the industry may settle on cellular data systems used for smartphones or WiFi if the technology can handle information more rapidly and reliably.

PROGRAM TESTS AUTONOMOUS IPV IN LIVE WORK ZONES Kicking off on August 18th, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), through its RoadX program, is launching a pilot program to test the use of Autonomous Impact Protection Vehicles (AIPV) from Royal Truck & Equipment in maintenance operations in live work zones. The goal is to demonstrate the technology, yield new findings on its application and enable further development, if needed, for the technology to become commercially available. It will be the first program involving the technology in the U.S. Currently, CDOT uses trucks with rear-mounted attenuators — also known as crash cushions and TMA trucks — in mobile work zones to act as a barrier to absorb or deflect vehicles that would otherwise hit workers or equipment.

These “buffer trucks” protect workers and are usually the first and only crash barrier between the workers and the traveling public. However, they are designed to be hit, which puts the drivers of the trucks at risk.

The AIPV will operate without a driver by following a CDOT maintenance vehicle that has been outfitted with hardware to communicate its maneuvering and actions to the autonomous unit. The autonomous system can then exactly match the motion of the leader vehicle, following at a constant, predetermined distance to provide consistent protection from work zone intrusion without placing a driver at risk.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 1,435 road construction site deaths occurred in the U.S. from 20032014. Fourteen percent of those fatally injured were in the government sector, with state and local governments each accounting for about half of the fatalities. The AIPV Pilot Program will assess the technology’s ability to help curb such statistics. A similar test program is planned by Colas Ltd. in London, UK. Virginia has strapped 1-sq.-ft. DSRC devices on light poles and bridges on various roads, including Interstate 66 outside Washington, D.C. The gadgets watch the highway and allow workers at a central control site to change recommended speeds lane by lane depending on traffic and communicate that to drivers with the signs mounted over the highway. They also send messages to state government road maintenance vehicles about traffic flows and road conditions.

Those emergency messages will be communicated on electronic boards on many highways and would arrive through a smartphone-like app that displays alerts on drivers’ dashboards. The sensors can then monitor traffic flows and see, for example, that wheels are losing touch with the road as a rainstorm builds. The signs can lower the speed limit for the current situation and the road devices could alert cars miles away to slow down or even give them new routes to their destinations.

With many states struggling to cover basic highway maintenance, this infrastructure seems far fetched. Planners say billions of federal dollars will likely be needed to wire the nation’s more than 4 million miles of paved roads and 250,000 intersections.

As such, it seems car manufacturers have put the cart before the horse in developing autonomous vehicles before the infrastructure to support them is ready. Still, we hope this means funding for this type of work and plenty of jobs for contractors in 2017 and beyond. ET

ased in London, Ontario, N. Piccoli Construction Ltd. specializes in curb and gutter and sidewalk on road reconstruction projects and subdivisions. It is meticulous about creating a quality product for its customers and takes pride in slipforming the straightest curb and gutter possible. Piccoli also performs tight radius work on parking lot projects.

Company founder Nick Piccoli bought his first GOMACO Commander III slipform machine in 1984. N. Piccoli Construction has always pushed the limits of its pavers, and along the way has created some innovative new ways to get things accomplished on jobsites, from 6-ft. radii to a new style of driveway depressor for molds.

The contractor’s newest Commander III model features rotary-sensored slew drives on each of the three tracks, which allow the machine to slipform a 24-in. radius. The machine also incorporates new radius software that allows the operator to program the size of the radius into the G+ controller. As it approaches that radius, the values are already dialed in — the operator simply flips a switch to activate the program and the machine slipforms around the radius. Sensor inputs on the side-shifting mold help ensure proper positioning while traveling through the radius. G+ also manages the speed of the tracks to ensure each track is traveling at the necessary speed.

“That’s all incorporated with the slew drives,” says Mario Piccoli, Nick’s son and current owner of N. Piccoli Construction. “When doing a tight radius, our operator is aware of the size of the radius and he programs that into the controller. The controller automatically knows at what angle to set the tracks and the machine pours around the radius

flawlessly. You can do that on the fly, as well [even if there are multiple radii]. If we go from a 20 ft. into a 10 ft. into a 5 ft. — just a weird shape — [the operator] can adjust as he’s going without having to stop the machine for any reason... Before, we would have to manipulate the machine to do the tight radii. Now, it’s just flip the switch, away it goes and we don’t even have to think about it. We’ve done 4-, 5-ft. radii, no problem.”

test on a small parking lot project in London. The project required only 656 ft. of curb, but included several 90° corners, a driveway entrance and only short slipforming runs inside the fenced-in area.

“In a parking lot like this, it helps out quite a bit when you can turn the tracks that tight, spin the machine right on a dime and negotiate the tight corners and tricky scenarios,” Piccoli says.

While Piccoli knew the rotary slew drives would help the paver turn a tight radius, he discovered an added bonus. The curb and gutter that was poured is the straightest the company has ever slipformed.

“We’ve always prided ourselves on putting down straight curb, but I’ve never put down straighter curb than this,” Piccoli states. “You would think that

maybe the straight curb would get sacrificed, but it isn’t. I’m almost happy with just the fact that it does perfectly straight curb, but it also has the ability to turn a really tight radius.”

CUSTOM PLATE ENHANCES MOLD CAPABILITIES The contractor has plenty of work lined up for the paver, including three subdivisions around London. One features 3.7 miles of curb during the first phase and an additional 4.3 miles of curb for the second phase. The subdivisions contain several driveway and sidewalk blockouts.

N. Piccoli Construction has created its own patented movable finishing plate that works in conjunction with the GOMACO California-style curb depressor.

The hydraulic-powered driveway depressor is used in curb and gutter molds to help eliminate wasted concrete when slipforming through driveways. Piccoli’s invention is an auxiliary stainless finishing plate attached to the back of the curb mold that can be hydraulically raised or lowered to finish the depressed curb.

“We developed the finishing plate based on the internal blade,” Piccoli explains. “Once the notch appears in the curb, our finishing plate rotates down and provides a new tail piece behind the existing tail piece with the profile of the driveway.

Basically, our finishing plate is providing a new profile of the driveway depression. It slips right on the money.

“The California-style cutout provides an opening for the depressor to rotate into place.

Otherwise, it would just smash the curb down as it rotated in,” he continues. “Our finishing plate rotates into place, and when we’re not using it, it rotates back out of place.” ET

The Commander III’s tight turning capabilities led to some software developments and three upgrades to better accommodate its abilities. The G+ and its steering system were modified to better react to the turning abilities of the rotary-sensored slew drives.

Icons on the G+ screen were also made larger, just as a matter of operator preference.

All of the software modifications have been accomplished telematically using GOMACO Remote Diagnostics (GRD). The manufacturer’s Service Department and Piccoli have the ability to monitor the machine using the system.

“We’ve had three upgrades already through telematics and that technology is amazing,” notes Mario Piccoli. “We called GOMACO with an idea and 30 minutes later, it was updated.

It’s also kind of cool talking to DeWayne Krayenhagen (GOMACO service/warranty manager) in service and [having] him know exactly where my machine is at any given time, all the functions and what the parameters are, what everything is set at and what it’s running at. If we ever have an issue, I can see that being pretty useful.”

Payco Specialties uses its skid steer to complete major road marking projects in Southern California.

L

ocated in the San Diego suburb of Chula Vista, Payco Specialties has established itself as a key player in the California infrastructure industry, with some 40 years’ experience. The private, familyowned company has around 20 employees, and its primary focus is on permanent and temporary stripe application and removal, reflective pavement markings, cutting custom stencils, parking lots and airport striping.

Payco expects a lot from its equipment and isn’t afraid to adapt it to meet it needs. “In the late 1970s, no one built custom road striper trucks,” says Jeff Llewellyn, Payco’s vice president.

“Even today, there are only a few companies committed to building these machines.”

To meet specific application requirements, the company began fabricating and customizing equipment in-house. “We were the first company to install video guidance cameras on our paint trucks to ensure straighter lines,” says Llewellyn. “We even

Payco also developed a short, narrow-bodied long line thermoplastic striper truck. The machine is suited to the confines of city streets and had the capacity for highpaced freeway work, opening the door to more job opportunities.

Llewellyn carefully compared the specs from different manufacturers looking for the one with the strongest hydraulic flow and greatest visibility from the cab.

“Volvo skid steers have a very high rate of flow and head speed,” Llewellyn states. “For example, in second gear, we reach around 13 to 14 mph.

Compared to the competition, the MC115C has the ability to cut the time taken to remove reflectors from a four-mile freeway closure by half. Plus, we benefit from a fully enclosed cab with air conditioning and heated seats for less than the closest competitor.”

Powered by a 74-hp Volvo Tier 4 Final engine, the MC115C has a hydraulic flow

rate of 33 gpm and a 2,600-lb. lifting capacity, making it suitable for multiple applications.

For example, it is used with an auger attachment for digging holes for roadside signs, and with forks to load 2,000-lb. pallets of thermoplastic powder, a job previously performed by a compact wheel loader.

Get Smart to KEEP ASPHALT HOT A new smartphone attachment can map asphalt temperatures instantaneously.

W

e all know that temperature is the key to a successful asphalt paving job.

When there are extreme differences in temperature and the mix gets cold, you’re likely to have mat failure. However, it can be difficult to know just how hot the asphalt being placed is when you’re in the middle of paving.

New camera technology has been developed to help contractors see temperature differences in the mix, but some of those cameras can cost over $15,000. In comparison, a new smartphone camera attachment from Seek Thermal costs as little as $250, and it’s changing the game of asphalt temperature monitoring.

The device is portable and easy to pack away. It combines powerful thermal insight with a 206 x 156 sensor and 36-in.wide field of view, and it runs off the low energy from your smartphone. The smartphone display makes it as visual and large as your phone or tablet screen. Its detection distance can be shortened to a few inches or it can detect temperatures up to as far as 1,000 ft. away.

LOGGING TEMPERATURES Just as you document density on a jobsite for proof of work, the camera attachments can be used to document and log temperatures. By doing this, you can have documented proof that the mix was delivered and placed at the desired temperature for optimal laydown and compaction.

Video can also be recorded while on the move. This allows you to record temperatures coming out of the truck on a consistent basis. Video can also show the hottest and coldest spots on the mat for documentation and pavement performance review purposes.

MONITORING HEAT On some jobs, it’s inevitable that mix sits in the bed of a truck, or multiple trucks lined up, for longer than it should before it’s dumped into the paver. At that point, the temperature of the mix could already be compromised, making it hard to achieve an end-quality mat.

This is where the smartphone attachment comes in. “When the mix comes, you can use the camera attachment to measure where there are cool spots in the bed and mix it up before dumping it in the paver,” says Marc Okicich, director of sales - Americas, Seek Thermal. “The camera can be used anywhere where you’re looking to measure temperature: when the mix is delivered, temperature of the

mat, ambient temperature, etc.”

Makes Contractors Leaner and Meaner Three contractors find benefits to storing project data in the cloud.

C

ontractors can enjoy major project collaboration benefits at very low cost using cloud-based project management information systems.

Cloud software and users’ data reside on the software provider’s servers. Customers access it via the Internet with almost any type of connected computer.

Here is how three construction contractors are making quantum leaps in operational efficiency and IT infrastructure savings using cloud software.

Real-time project data that all stakeholders can access from anywhere are accelerating decisions and construction while boosting data security and profit.

SUBSCRIPTION COSTS A FRACTION OF DATA CENTERS EYA, a luxury townhome builder in the D.C. area, began using Procore’s cloud-based project management system in 2013.

Digitizing paper documents and centralizing them in online project files makes managing projects much easier, notes Pete Zafros, director of technology.

Not only is EYA producing less paper since adopting the system, its digital tools are also more effective than paper. The entire team’s ability to view a drawing and click an associated request for information (RFI) can prevent building a structure based on a design that has been changed.

EYA’s subcontractors also have real-time access to project information, boosting the entire project team’s efficiency. “The field was having significant problems just downloading the plans before we got Procore, so having everyone see all the latest project management information, like drawings, RFIs and punchlist

items, is an extreme improvement,” says Zafros.

EYA has maintained a small on-premises data center to store data collected in the accounting system. The company has used the accounting system since its founding in 1989 and recently integrated with Procore to give both project managers and the back office real-time visibility into project costs. Leaving project management system data in the cloud saved EYA the cost of expanding its data center.

COMPLIANCE AND CUTTING SERVER COSTS Stilwell Construction, Riverside, CA, is a six-person construction operation that designs and builds custom postframe structures. The company has looked and acted like a much larger firm since adopting Procore in 2014. “Before, we had a lot of spreadsheets and people made handwritten lists,” says Terri Ross, office manager and controller.

Zafros estimates that the annual cost of the project management system subscription is about 20% of what a server upgrade would cost given the need to purchase software and have staff maintain the new server. He adds that a new server would have to be in service for 10 years for the necessary investment to be more cost effective than cloud computing — but an upgrade would likely be necessary in five years.

EYA’s leadership has no reservations about the security of sensitive company data on Procore’s servers. “It’s like asking a CFO at a construction company ‘Would you like to keep your money locked in a room or would you rather take it to the bank?’” Zafros says. “You have to trust these companies more than you trust yourself.”

Although Stilwell still uses Excel for estimating, the project management system now gives the company better visibility into its costs and enables it to bid more accurately with an eye on profit margins. Bid margins have also increased slightly, Ross reports.

Ross particularly likes the fact that project photos are not stored on the server that stores Stilwell’s Accubuild accounting information. The company upgraded its on-premises server in 2015, and Ross estimates that upgrading it to accommodate the project management data would have cost several thousand dollars more.

ASK THE RIGHT QUESTIONS In 2014, Hayles and Howe, a Baltimore-based contractor specializing in ornamental plaster work and scagliola, became one of the first adopters of cloud-based Sage Construction Anywhere project management software. The company integrated the program with its Sage 100 Contractor financial software, which it began using in 2006.

Sage Construction Anywhere has given Hayles and Howe accurate, comprehensive job cost data from the field, according to Joselin Martin, CFO. Supervisors can use a document management function to store project information such as site photos and safety reports and make it available to anyone else at the company. Users can add notes or documents.

Integrating field data with Sage 100 Contractor allows Hayles and Howe to monitor data on a weekly basis and track overtime throughout a given project, for example.

Martin contends that a thorough vetting of cloud software providers is essential when choosing a provider. “I want to see the Service Organization Controls reports,” she says.

These reports are created by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants to satisfy marketplace demand for assurance regarding the confidentiality and privacy of information processed by a third-party service organization such as a cloud computing provider.

“For me to feel comfortable to go to the cloud, I need documentation of what security there is, what happens if there is a breach, where my data will be located and my ownership of that data, and access to it in a form I can use,” she states. She adds that her professional associations — such as the American Institute of CPAs and the Maryland Association of CPAs — are providing good opportunities to learn the right questions to ask. ET

Manage your internal service program like a formal service department in a dealership or rental center.

ervice costs you time and money. Lack of service also costs you time and money, and probably more than if you had performed the service. The trick is to maximize uptime, avoid breakdowns on site and catch the costly repairs before they happen.

It was once the norm that your internal technicians could fix just about anything in the shop or out in the field. But times have changed and technology is making construction equipment more expensive to fix, and the tools needed to fix it more complex. In short, your techs may not be able to handle the units you purchase if they don’t have the training and equipment required to identify what’s wrong and the specialized tools needed to make the repairs.

The only “out” you may have is to split the work between what can be done effectively in-house and what requires a full-service shop. I suspect using the full-service shop doesn’t cost much more when compared to an inefficient job attempted in-house.

The other aspect of in-house work is to ensure that your senior techs are doing what they are paid to do. Much like the equipment they repair, techs need to maximize their time and dollar utilization and produce a reasonable ROI. So are they actually wrenching all day, or are they standing in line waiting for parts, taking units to the wash rack or out in the field trying to locate the equipment they need to work on?

Professional service departments look for 80% time utilization from their senior techs. To make sure they’re operating effectively, the service managers assign a flat rate to the job, then compare the completed work order against that rate. Techs are expensive, and any company with numerous techs needs to track them religiously.

Using a formal maintenance program helps keep service costs under control. I’m amazed at how many companies avoid preventive maintenance and wait until a unit breaks before they perform any service. Talk about avoidable costs!

There are plenty of resources available that explain how to run a service department. If you’re just getting started on a formal program, ask your equipment dealer for a copy of its internal policies and examples of the paperwork that goes with them. Study them and start outlining what will work in your shop.

For those already running in-house programs: ˜˜ Find and keep your good techs. Pay them the local union rate. ˜˜ Send techs for annual training to learn about the latest technology.

The key here is to keep your techs wrenching 80% of the available time.

Can’t keep up with a formal maintenance program? Then I suggest you rent more equipment or outsource the maintenance. The rental company you use is in the same predicament and has to make its units rental ready. It may be a good outsource selection to help maintain your fleet.

Even if you’re outsourcing, keep track of the hours per inspection for each type of unit and use that as an internal guideline in case any internal preventive programs find their way into your shop.
