WITH CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITY in full swing throughout much of the country, a regulation going into effect on December 1st may be the last thing on your mind. But the new overtime rule announced last month requires your attention sooner than later to avoid major headaches and potential violations once enforcement begins.

Under the final rule issued by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), the salary threshold under which most salaried workers are guaranteed overtime has been doubled from $23,660 to $47,476 annually. This will potentially extend overtime to 4.2 million workers, according to DOL estimates. (The Economic Policy Institute puts it at nearly triple this figure.) Thew

DOL says the change was implemented to strengthen overtime protections that eroded dramatically over the past 40 years.

The agency indicates the share of full-time workers qualifying for overtime based on their salaries had plummeted from 62% in 1975 to 7% today. (Note: The new rule also raises the “highly compensated employee” threshold from $100,000 to $134,004.) No changes were made to the “duties test”, and the rule now allows bonuses and incentive payments to count toward 10% of the salary threshold.

According to the DOL, the changes are meant to bolster the middle class, and their economic buying power, by boosting eligible workers’ wages by an estimated $12 billion over the next 10 years. Yet, opponents argue the cost to employers, and small businesses in particular, could be substantial. The construction sector has the potential to be among the hardest hit.

Following publication of the draft regulation last June, economists with the National Association of Home Builders estimated under the new rules that more than 110,000 construction supervisors nationwide could become overtime eligible. Certain office staff may also fall under nonexempt status.

Many arguments continue to be expressed both for and against the rule, and there are already those looking forward to efforts to overturn it under the next presidential administration. Until such an (unprecedented and thus unlikely) event occurs, businesses must prepare themselves for what’s to come.

This will involve tracking hours for newly eligible employees and potentially reclassifying these workers. This process should be started as soon as possible so you can identify the number of nonexempt employees among your workforce and put a plan in place to pay them legally under the new law, without negatively affecting employee morale or digging too deeply into your company’s coffers.

Suggestions bandied about include changing their pay structure to an hourly rate that takes into account current overtime pay; raising their pay above the threshold to avoid the need to pay overtime; or maintaining the current pay structure while hiring additional support staff to reduce the number of overtime hours salaried employees must perform.

Some thought, and potentially dollars, will need to be put behind compliance.

Start by determining how it will affect your business, then consult with your HR staff, accountant or a consultant knowledgeable in the labor rule to determine the best steps to take for your operation.

Super 2000-3i Tracked Paver The Super 2000-3i provides a 10-ft. basic width and a 28-ft. maximum paving width, with a top placement rate of 1,540 tph.

Its 250-hp Cummins QSB6.7-C250 six-cylinder, Tier 4 Finalcompliant engine includes a 100-gal. fuel tank. KeyPOD

The KeyPOD equipment tracking and management system is designed to help control access to off-highway machinery and improve compliance with safety inspections. It works as a Mobile Network Hub (with MiniPOD for Drive-By Capture) to collect the hours and locations of equipment. Data is captured in real time and status reports are securely transmitted to EQUIPCHAT and/or Mobile EQUIPCHAT for management review. To access equipment, an operator passcode must be entered on the keypad; a lockout mode prevents equipment from starting in the event of an incorrect passcode or unauthorized operator.

The keypad is also used to record any inspection non-conformance issues or problems. Optional light signals (green, yellow and red) provide clear, visual identification of equipment and operator status.

Vertical digging system proves to

SAVE TIME AND MONEY

WACKER NEUSON’S UNIQUE Vertical Digging System (VDS) has proven to improve productivity and efficiency when excavating and backfilling. The VDS solves the problem of how to efficiently and comfortably dig on sloped terrain, straddle concrete curbs and dig in narrow areas.

Wacker Neuson’s VDS, available on select compact excavators, saves up to 25 percent on time and material. The VDS compensates for height differences on uneven terrain and quickly sets the operator in an upright position, greatly increasing productivity.

This innovative system enables operators to tilt the cab and boom of the excavator by up to 15-degrees with a push of a button, allowing the operator to compensate for slopes up to 27 percent. The excavator can then be used to dig more precisely in a vertical position which significantly speeds up excavation and backfilling work, resulting in time and material savings up to 25 percent. Operators can remain in an upright position, making it easier and more comfortable to operate. Increased stability is a further benefit, creating a safer environment for operators and across the construction site.

The Link-Belt X4 Series is driven by an Isuzu Tier 4 Final-compliant engine that utilizes a cooled EGR system to lower NOx pollutants while maintaining fuel efficiency and engine horsepower. The selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system works downstream from the engine to remove pollutants to near-zero levels.

It is designed for minimal maintenance and minimal diesel exhaust fluid consumption. With SanyLIVE, customers receive real-time diagnostic and condition alerts, notifying them of any upcoming scheduled maintenance, equipment service needs or even insights to the possibility of future component failures.

Rhino excavators have a simple engine speed control that regulates the engine’s rpms by looking at feedback from control levers and other variables. As a result, the engine only works when it has to, enabling the machine to save fuel and work more efficiently.

LIFTS AND ATTACHMENTS? Lifting Gear Hire Corporation (LGH) is well versed in the rental of lifting equipment, including attachments such as concrete barrier grabs. “They are used by heavy highway contractors and DOTs to reconfigure driving lanes temporarily,” says Patrick Clark, national rental support manager. “Our specialty is providing equipment for use on heavy objects and odd shapes on jobsites.”

This often includes supplying modular spreader beams of different capacities and configurations. With an array of lifting options available, contractors may choose to rent rather than purchase.

Clark offers these tips to assess when to rent vs. buy a lifting option.

WHEN TO RENT: ˰˰ If a tool is not required often or is rarely used. ˰˰ You want to focus on your specific craft, rather than inspecting and re-certifying lifting equipment. “Those who do not want to worry about the inspection and maintenance will rent,” he says. ˰˰ The lifting equipment is large and it’s easier to rent to eliminate storage costs. ˰˰ You want the latest and greatest technology. “[Customers] often find the equipment in their tool’s cribs unsafe or obsolete,” says Clark.

WHEN TO BUY: ˰˰ If the overall cost of rental exceeds a certain financial threshold, you may prefer to purchase. “That stated, we have many contractors that far exceed this threshold,” says Clark. “Usually, they acknowledge that they enjoy not assuming the liability because they are not the owner of the equipment. The rental cost is something they will bear for the benefits.” ˰˰ If you have not rented a particular type of equipment before. “This concept is not as widespread as renting an excavator or [personnel] lift,” notes Clark.

The Kenco Superlift is targeted to contractors who move objects in a lot of different shapes and sizes. The main body of the attachment can be fit with an assortment of tines that can be changed based on the object being moved, eliminating the need to purchase individual lifters for different job applications. “It’s a great option for someone who moves a lot of different things, rather than a lot of one thing,” says Black.

Vacuworx also offers several specialized attachments for odd-shaped items, including a vacuum slab lifter for concrete slab removal and runway rehabilitations, and the Octapad, which is an eight-pad system designed for concrete slab removal during road and bridge construction projects.

“Contractors can cut a whole section of highway, then lift it out,” says Randy Hayes, corporate sales director, Vacuworx. “Typically, they would have had to use a hydraulic hammer to break it up first, then haul it away.

But these attachments save a lot of time. Contractors can just pick up a slab and set it out of the way.”

The beauty of many barrier lifts is that they are automatic, eliminating the need for anyone other than the machine operator to be involved in the lift.

For example, Kenco’s barrier lift is activated by setting it down onto the object.

The tongs clamp onto it without the need for hydraulics. Once the barrier has been set down and positioned, the lift releases automatically.

“An operator can quickly and safely pick, move, then set concrete barrier wall,” explains Black. “Once it’s placed, he can release it in the desired location

without assistance. It’s completely handsfree, so not only is it quicker, it’s safer because it keeps workers out of harm’s way.”

Levis appreciates the safety of an automatic system. “Barrier clamps use friction and the weight of the barrier to ‘pinch’ the sides of the material and lift it,” she says.

Accent Barrier uses Kenco barrier clamps, which incorporate an automatic open and close feature that eliminates the need to have a second individual working the clamp as the operator lowers it on top of the material to be moved. “This is safer since there is no one on the ground or near the heavy piece of concrete that is going to be lifted off the ground,” says Levis.

SAFER PIPE PLACEMENT Moving and placing pipes can be accomplished with a variety of attachments, including pipe lifts and pipe hooks. Such attachments are designed to move all sizes and types of pipes, including PVC, ductile iron, steel and reinforced concrete pipe.

principal as [Kenco] barrier lifts, with each model accommodating several pipe diameters,” says Black. “For the pipe lift, its tines do not contact the bedding material to prevent the pipe from moving once it has been placed… Our lifter is also designed to push the pipe joints together.

“It is safer for workers because they don’t need to be down in the ditch unhooking any straps,” he continues. “With our pipe hook, the operator simply inserts the hook into the pipe, then picks, moves, installs and retracts. Each model of this particular lifting design can handle a wide range of pipe diameters, as well. And because it is a mechanical lifter, it won’t release the pipe until the load is placed and the weight is removed.”

The Caldwell Group also offers pipe lifting solutions as crane attachments. The line includes a pipe pick and the c-hook pipe lifter, which allows for safe, efficient installation of the lifter and virtually handsfree release of loads. The c-hook pipe lifter also enables a pipe (or empty hook) to always be lifted level with multiple bail adjustments. Other solutions such as pipe hooks and tongs are offered for cast, steel or PVC pipe, or can be designed as needed.

Vacuworx offers a unique pipe handling system that utilizes vacuum for loading, unloading and placing virtually all sizes of concrete, steel, plastic, fiberglass and cast iron pipe. “Our attachments are used with a lot of gas pipes,” says Hayes.

“The coating can easily be damaged, which then needs to be repaired. With a vacuum lifting system, a pad comes in contact with the pipe to create a seal so it doesn’t cause any damage.”

The self-contained lifters feature a hydraulic rotator that allows for 360° rotation. “It can also be controlled by wireless remote,” says Hayes, “so the operator can load and unload by himself from the safety of the cab. This keeps guys out of the trucks and off of the roads, taking them out of harm’s way.” ET

Kissick Construction Co. was retained by the independent public utility WaterOne on behalf of Water District No. 1 of Johnson County to build approximately five miles of 48-in.-diameter coated steel pipeline as part of the $65 million Hedge Lane pump station, reservoir and pipeline project in rural Kansas. The pipeline, a localized pump station and a 7.5-million-gal. reservoir were commissioned to maintain service and shore up underground storage capacity for more than 400,000 people in a 272-sq.-mile area.

Work began in September 2014, as crews conducted surveys and started clearing trees west of and running parallel to Interstate 35. Pipelaying teams commenced activities in the lane in November 2014. The construction phase of the Hedge Lane project kicked off in Spring 2014 and is scheduled for completion early next year.

Kissick, a heavy civil contractor based in Kansas City, has years of materialhandling experience with PVC or reinforced concrete pipe. In the past, it employed the use of nylon slings, which required up to three additional workers to hoist heavy-duty pipe and lower it into a trench. However, the Hedge Lane project involved a coated steel product that requires performance of a Holiday test to detect scratches, pinholes, voids or undesirable discontinuities.

“There is a special, time-consuming protocol to patch or repair this type of protective tape coating,” says Chris Oxford, Kissick project superintendent. “In hotter weather, the slings have a tendency to cut into the tape wrap and damage it. Any movement of the tape or appearance of an air pocket would mean having to redo it.”

To address this, Kissick rented a Vacuworx RC 16 pipe-handling system to move the pipe. The self-powered, remotely operated attachment has a lifting capacity of 35,200 lbs. and is rated to handle 4-in.-diameter pipe and up. It features 360° of hydraulic rotation for precise placement of materials without the use of hooks, chains or slings, and with fewer personnel on the ground.

Within three months, Kissick made the decision to purchase the attachment as crews realized greater efficiencies compared with conventional pipe handling methods. Mounted on a Komatsu PC400 excavator, the attachment was used to unload the 10 to 12 trucks that arrived daily over the course of 12 months to various staging points on the route.

“The way they stack pipes on the truck, it is about 10 to 12 ft. off the ground. I just didn’t really like laborers going up there and crawling around, especially with frost or in inclement weather,” says Oxford. “Without the [RC 16], I would be using four people to maneuver one pipe weighing in at around 12,000 lbs. It usually took two guys just to get the slings on. Now there is no need for anyone to be up there anymore.”

The decision to add the attachment to the fleet made financial sense. “It was pretty simple on my end,” says Oxford. “When I don’t have to have those three guys on the ground unloading pipe, that saves money.”

Altogether, Kissick accepted delivery of more than 24,000 linear feet of pipe, typically laid out in 50-ft. sections along the right-of-way. “The Vacuworx system reduced the potential for any damage,” says Oxford. “We simply picked up each piece, ran our continuity test, patched if necessary and repositioned the pipe in the trench — all while maintaining a high level of safety and productivity. It just sped up the whole process.”

Kissick completed its portion of the project ahead of schedule. “This kind of installation can be very time consuming,” says Matt Rothermel, Kissick project manager. “We took a bit of a risk, and we got the production we were banking on.”

rear cross member also provides optimum visibility to the rear of the machine.

The operator’s station has been completely revamped with a wider cabin for exceptional comfort and accessibility. A new 5.7-inch color multi-informational display keeps the operator informed, while the precision pilot controls and a new Active Power Control system provide impressive control of the machine.

The TL12V2 now features a quiet track design for reduced noise and vibration while operating with a new tread pattern.

The tread pattern produces greater flotation, minimizing ground disturbance, and a new contact pad between the roller and track enhances ride quality and reduces vibration.

CUT DOWN on Your SCR-related Costs Clean, quality DEF is critical to avoid costly repairs.

M

ost Tier 4 Final construction equipment over 75 hp utilizes selective catalytic reduction (SCR) exhaust aftertreatment technology to convert NOx to N2 and water through a chemical reaction. This aftertreatment technology has typically resulted in improved machine performance and better fuel efficiency while still meeting clean air mandates.

These SCR systems are wellproven in on-road applications.

But for the catalytic reaction to occur, a diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) must be sprayed over the precious metal substrate in the catalytic converter. DEF is 32.5% of a very pure synthetic grade of automotive-grade urea and 67.5% de-ionized water.

For those who are not already familiar, urea is often used as a fertilizer in agricultural applications, though in a less pure form.

While SCR technology has proven benefits, customers need to be de-ionized water educated on these systems to prevent costly repairs and downtime.

The biggest risk factor is from contaminated DEF. Unfortunately, many customers are not properly educated since this is not a popular topic during the sales process. “If you are unhappy about the additional cost of this new excavator because of the cost of the emissions technology and you are a little sour because you have no other option, I am probably not going to have a great conversation with you about DEF handling,” explains Luke Van Wyk, Thunder Creek

Equipment. “You are upset that you have to handle it in the first place.”

Yet, proper DEF handling is the key to trouble-free service. The catalyst is the most expensive component in an SCR system. “A catalyst cannot be repaired, it can only be replaced,” says Van Wyk. Any contamination in the DEF fluid can coat the precious metal in the catalyst, which cannot be reversed. “Any damage or degradation that happens there just happens.”

It is a cumulative effect. “Part of what gives owners a false sense of security is that the effects of metals contamination happen over a period of time, like an infection,” says Van Wyk. “We get a false sense of security because there is no immediof a very pure synthetic ate cause and grade of automotiveeffect relationgrade urea ship. That is why employing proper handling practices up front is so important. It is really a pay now or pay later type of risk. There are some very simple steps you can take to minimize or eliminate the risk you have from DEF purity.”

And this task does fall on your shoulders. Most OEMs clearly state they are not responsible for damage caused to the SCR catalyst due to contaminated DEF. In the trucking industry, SCR technology has a proven track record of trouble-free service.

But there are key differences between on-highway trucks and off-highway construction

equipment that need careful consideration. The biggest difference is that on-highway trucks travel to the fluid source, usually a truck stop, while fluid is usually brought to a jobsite for construction equipment fleets — a considerably less sterile environment. This is where mishandling of DEF could potentially lead to costly repairs and unscheduled downtime.

CLEAN DEF IS A MUST

Even the hose used to transfer DEF needs to be specifically designed for this use, with stainless steel connections and hose material compatible with DEF.

In order to prevent system degradation or failures, DEF must be kept free from contaminants. “The thresholds of contamination are very tight,” says Van Wyk. “The ISO standard defines the threshold for contamination in a measurement of milligrams per kilogram.

how you normally handle fluids,” says Van Wyk. “You may use plastic containers.

Those fittings are copper, chrome or nickel plated. Those are all known contaminants to DEF.” It doesn’t take much exposure to any earth metal.

“We have a customer now that had a fleet of machines. He built his own DEF tank on a service truck,” says Van Wyk. “He made the tank out of stainless steel, but he went to the local home and farm store and purchased fluid transfer components off the shelf. They were regular ball brass valves and a regular galvanized nozzle. He had a very significant breakdown in his fleet because all of those corrosives ended up in his catalyst.”

Even the transfer hose itself has the potential to become a contaminant. “In the industry,

says Van Wyk. “But we still hear stories of it happening.”

Don’t try to change the nature of DEF, which freezes at 12° F. SCR systems and DEF handling containers are designed to handle the freezing and thawing cycles.

“In some cases, we see people try to use additives with DEF,” says Van Wyk. “They don’t like that it will freeze, particularly in the Northern climates. Some companies have come to the market with antifreeze for DEF that will lower its freezing temperature.

But it has very bad effects and causes a lot of damage to the life of the catalyst.”

EDUCATE EMPLOYEES The key to trouble-free operation is education on the proper handling of DEF. “As a fleet owner, I need to figure out how to protect myself so that the operator cannot unknowingly do something to harm my machine,” says Van Wyk. “We have to be very intentional about who we are educating. If I am a fleet owner, the risk is not as much about what I know about [DEF], but what the employee who puts fluid in my machine knows about it. That is where my real point of risk is.” ET

ow rolling resistance tires have generated a lot of interest in the long-haul market. Now, recent legislation to improve medium- and heavy-duty truck fuel economy is bringing low rolling resistant tire technology to the vocational truck market.

The intent of the regulations is to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by reducing fuel consumption. Phase 1 of the standards is currently being implemented. “The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently issued proposed

Phase II rules for the Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Fuel Efficiency Standards for medium- and heavy-duty engines and vehicles,” says Gary Schroeder, director of commercial vehicle and global OEM sales for Cooper Tire and Rubber Co., assigned to the Roadmaster brand. “These rules impact vehicles in model years 2018 to 2027.

“The proposed rule would specifically require low rolling resistance tires for trailers and suggests low rolling resistance tires for vocational trucks,” he notes. “The rule is still in the agency review phase after receiving a high volume of comments.

But in all likelihood, the final rule will contain some elements of the proposed rule.”

WHY TARGET ROLLING RESISTANCE? First, we need to understand rolling resistance. “It is the energy a tire consumes while rolling under load,” says Sharon Cowart, director of product marketing, Michelin Truck Tires. “Heat is generated by the tire’s sidewalls and tread as the tire flexes when rolling. It is estimated that a third of heavy-duty truck fuel consumption is used to overcome rolling resistance.”

Not all tires are created equal.

“The rolling resistance of a truck tire depends on its construction and the compounds being used,” says Cowart. “Michelin’s Dual Energy Compound tread delivers a fuel-efficient top tread layer that comes in contact with the road and optimizes wear resistance and traction, alongside a cool running tread rubber bottom layer that increases casing temperature for low rolling resistance. This inside layer never touches the pavement.”

Tread rubber compounding and tread mass are two of the most significant factors that impact rolling resistance.

“Low rolling resistance tread compounds tend to feature some silica in place of carbon black and polymers that are good for rolling resistance,” says Schroeder. “Tread mass and rolling resistance can be reduced by reducing tread depths. Manufacturers have also addressed other parts of the tire in varied and distinct approaches to reduce rolling resistance.”

But there are trade-offs.

“When a tire design achieves lower rolling resistance, it can result in undesirable side effects if the tires are not carefully engineered,” says Schroeder. “For example, when some tire makers formulate tread compounds to achieve lower rolling resistance performance, the tires may wear faster or become more susceptible to cutting and tearing.”

“Like any tire, those designed for a low rolling resistance require several items (compound, pattern and construction) to work in unison in order to provide the desired results,” says Tom Clauer, Yokohama corporate manager, commercial and OTR product planning. “A design purely dedicated to lower rolling resistance will create

trade-offs in other areas, such as mileage and wear. Yokohama engineers constantly work to design low rolling resistance tires and reduce the trade-offs.”

Tread depth is one of the most critical factors. “In most cases, the depth of a tire’s tread blocks is inverse to rolling resistance,” says Cowart. “The deeper the tread blocks, the better the grip but the worse for fuel economy. Stiffer sidewalls can also reduce rolling resistance.

However, there are some design options available that can lower the rolling resistance in areas not related to on/off road use (internal components, for example).”

CALCULATE ON-ROAD ROI “For long-haul fleets, fuel costs represent the single highest non-payroll operating expense,” says Cowart. “Rolling resistance accounts for approximately a third of fuel costs. A 3% reduction in rolling resistance translates into a 1% fuel savings, or an increase of approximately .05 miles per gallon, depending on the vehicle and route.”

But even in fuel-sensitive long-haul operations, there are trade-offs that need careful consideration to obtain the lowest total cost of ownership. “Rolling resistance improvements usually come at the cost of mileage and durability,” says Prosser Carnegie, NAFTA product development manager, Continental Tire. That being said, technological advances have helped to reduce the trade-offs associated with low rolling resistance tires using means other than tread cap compound.

The long-haul industry relies on SmartWay-verified tires to meet mandatory requirements, such as pulling 53-ft. or longer dry van or refrigerated van trailers in California. “The EPA established different rolling resistance limits for steer, drive and trailer tires to be considered SmartWay-verified,” says Schroeder. “Combined, SmartWay-verified tires can reduce the rolling resistance on

“For example, when some tire makers formulate tread compounds to achieve the lower rolling resistance performance required by SmartWay, the tires may wear faster or be more susceptible to cutting and tearing than tires designed with more traditional tread compounds to maximize wear performance,” Schroeder states. Another difference is the tires may have shallower tread depths. “Our

“LODC stands for ‘Lowest Overall Driving Cost’. This tool examines the total cost of tire ownership and helps to visualize the point at which fuel efficiency can return more investment compared to other more easily seen performances such as removal mileage.”

VOCATIONAL TIRES DIVERGE Vocational tires are under development to meet the upcoming GHG regulations.

“The concern is that most current low rolling resistance tires weren’t specifically designed for

resistance,” says Cowart. “A longhaul application will clearly see the benefits of a low rolling resistance tire in a much shorter time span than a vocational application.

“The LODC calculation is radically different in these applications compared to long haul,” she continues. “While rolling resistance is far more dominant for a long-haul fleet, these benefits are significantly reduced for off-road applications. These trucks travel much slower and require more acceleration/deceleration compared to constant speed travel. Also, the wear and potential damage of the tires is much greater, which in turn tilts the balance in favor of durabil-

In the long-haul industry, low rolling resistance tires often have less tread depth. “You will not often see a full 32/32nds drive tire optimized for rolling resistance,” says Carnegie. “You may find deep drive tires on the Smartway-recognized technology lists, but I would argue that those tires are not fully optimized for rolling resistance. In these cases, the tire is bridging two or more operational targets.”

Low rolling resistance vocational tires are going to be substantially different than those designed for long-haul operations. “Today, tires that service the long-haul application and tires that service the vocational application are more closely related compared to tires that we will see in the future. As tire design has to achieve greater performance in several different categories, the ability to use generic solutions will be reduced.”

Vocational applications have different demands. “These applications can involve scrub, curbing, tread aggression — all of which are unrelated to rolling

APPLICATION DRIVES SELECTION Vocational applications usually require deeper tread depths, an increase in void in the tread pattern and tread compounding that is more suited for cut and chip resistance. These design elements are counter to how you would design a low rolling resistance tire.

“Traditionally, the tire demands for vocational-duty equipment were durability for use in severe service situations,” says Clauer. “The service areas for vocational equipment are normally limited to relatively small

‘regional’ areas and the amount of highway time was at lower speeds and shorter distances.”

Proper tire selection depends on the time spent in off-road applications and the condition of the road surfaces. “Tires specifically chosen for off-road use will typically be higher in rolling resistance than tires chosen for line-haul operations,” says Cowart. “But within the category of tires designed specifically for off-road uses, there are a range of rolling resistances possible depending upon tire construction and materials.”

“The true fuel-saving benefits of low rolling resistance vocational tires emerge when the vehicles equipped with these tires hit the road or highway when traveling between jobsites,” says Brian Buckham, general manager, product marketing, Goodyear. “That said, it’s important to keep in mind that low rolling resistance is just one performance benefit construction and other vocational fleets demand. Increased miles to removal, often achieved through the presence of more wearable rubber, as well as cut, chip and tear resistance for on- and off-road service, excellent traction and stability and a tough, premium-quality casing to enhance long-term tire retreadability are important needs, as well.”

One challenge is that vocational fleets often have a difficult time measuring fuel efficiency improvements. “While the fleet would immediately see losses due to chip/chunk damage, or fast wear, it’s often difficult for the vocational application to measure improvements in fuel efficiency,” says Carnegie.

“Driver behavior and vehicle configuration are at odds with fuel-efficient operations. This is not due to a lack of concern, but a focused business model that must consider a wider range of performance needs.

“With the vocational application, the tread cap compound must serve a wider variety of performance needs, resulting is a greater dependence on other tire components for rolling resistance improvements,” he points out. “These in turn are often in conflict with the need for tire durability requirements.”

Goodyear offers a wide range of construction application commercial truck tires that offer traction and cut resistance plus GHG compliancy, including the G731 MSA and the G751 MSA. “Regardless of vocation, application and wheel position, it is important to achieve the right balance of performance benefits,” says Buckham. “In the past, when one benefit, such as low rolling resistance, in a particular type of tire was optimized, the other benefits of the performance triangle — miles to removal and tear resistance, for example — were reduced. This

dynamic is much less prevalent these days.

“With the continual evolution in technology and tire design, engineers have made significant strides in maintaining all three performance properties,” he states. “We recognize that as fuel efficiency regulations continue to tighten, the need for tires that help deliver reduced rolling resistance and enhanced fuel economy will only grow. That’s why we are aggressively investing even more resources in developing tires that help fleets reduce their fuel consumption, with little to no effect on miles to removal and tear resistance.” ET

Cut and chip resistance are also challenges in the design of low rolling resistance tires.

For the first time, trailers may be subject to GHG regulations. “Lower rolling resistance vocational tires can be suitable on equipment trailers, especially since these trailers operate mostly on-road and typically drop off equipment at construction sites,” says Goodyear’s Brian Buckham. “Keep in mind that trailer tires generate rolling resistance as they roll, just like the tires on the trucks that pull them. Many all-position vocational tires are suitable for use on trailer applications, meaning they will exhibit the same performance benefits whether mounted on the trailer, drive or steer positions.”

There are trade-offs. “There are tires designed today that can be used on equipment trailers which are fuel efficient,” notes Prosser Carnegie, Continental Tire. “But a tire optimized for long-distance fuel efficiency may not be able to withstand higher abrasion and cur resistance needed by equipment trailers.”

Not all trailer requirements are the same. ‘Some trailers, like spread axle trailers, induce a lot of scrub on the tires,” says Gary Schroeder, Cooper Tire & Rubber.

“Therefore, the tires for a spread axle trailer generally have deeper treads to help extend the tread life of the tires. The deeper tread depths will result in the tires having a higher rolling resistance when compared to a shallow tread depth highway trailer tire.”

Some trailer applications are better suited for low rolling resistance tires. “There certainly are some equipment trailer applications well suited for low rolling resistance tires,” says Michelin’s Sharon Cowart. “Rolling resistance is a strong consideration in the design of those products. However, there are a very large range of equipment trailers and applications. Selecting the right tire for the right application is of prime importance. There may be other performances more important to the successful operation of the fleet than low rolling resistance alone.”

GHG rules regarding tire inflation systems on trailers could have an even bigger impact than low rolling resistance tires. “An interesting point in the proposed rule is that it would require automatic tire inflation systems on trailers as a means to keep tires well inflated, and therefore optimized for the actual rolling resistance in service,” says Schroeder.

“Maintaining proper tire inflation has always been one of the best ways to ensure optimum rolling resistance of the tires, as well as to facilitate fuel efficiency, long wear and casing life.”

“While lower rolling resistance generally leads to lower fuel consumption and reduced emissions, maintaining proper tire inflation pressure must remain a key part of any fleet manager’s strategy,” he adds. “When it comes to reducing fuel consumption, maintaining proper tire inflation can be just as important as the choice of tires.”

ajor vocational truck OEMs are targeting reduced downtime through the utilization of onboard telematics systems.

These systems diagnose problems and allow fleet managers to make educated decisions, such as whether the truck needs to be routed to a service shop for immediate repairs or can complete its assigned task and be serviced when the timing is more convenient.

Some companies are going further by tying telematics into factory-backed support, which allows the OEMs and dealer to interpret fault codes and develop actions plans that can slash unplanned downtime.

The objective is to schedule maintenance when it is necessary to prevent failures while minimizing unnecessary downtime due to nuisance issues.

Dave Hillman, vice president

and general manager of vocational trucks, Navistar, claims most drivers can be divided into one of two camps. “When a light comes on the instrument panel it is a fault code of some kind. You either have drivers in Camp A that immediately pull over to the side of the road and say ‘there is a light on, call a wrecker.’ The [Camp B] group has a roll of electrical tape. They pull off an inch of electrical tape and they place it over the light so they don’t have to look at it. They pretend nothing happened and

they keep going. Both of those behaviors are bad ones if you are the owner of the asset.”

Telematics systems, such as Navistar’s OnCommand Connection provide a better solution. Not all indicator lights are created equal. “Some of them are benign. Some of them are urgent. OnCommand Connection gives the owner, dispatcher or someone in a more centralized location the ability to look at segmented data on a computer screen or smartphone,” says Hillman.

With the Navistar OnCommand Connection portal, users can track the entire fleet, regardless of brand, receive any error codes as well as advice on how the error codes can be handled and be directed where to route the trucks for necessary service.

“OnCommand Connection puts into plain English what to do with that asset.”

The fault code is coupled with a health report. “It is a way to triage patients before they even come to the front door of the emergency room,” says Hillman.

For instance, Unit 17 may need an air filter swapped but is fine to continue with its delivery, while Unit 19 might need to come in right away.

Mack Trucks continued its journey to cut downtime by combining telematics data with live support personnel in 2014.

“In December 2014, we opened our Uptime Center, which demonstrates our commitment to keeping customers on the road, driving the success of their businesses,” says John Walsh, vice president of marketing, Mack Trucks. “The Uptime Center is open 24/7 and is staffed by customer support specialists who work with the customers and dealers to resolve any issues as quickly as possible.

“We have evolved how we do business to maximize customer uptime,” he continues.

We will call the customer and schedule the truck in there so that when it does come in, they can jump on it right away and get it in and out of there as quickly as possible.

“We know when the truck gets there and when it leaves because it is geofenced,” says Dorwart. “There is an invisible fence around the dealership.

strategy. It is not just an employee answering a phone.” It is a total process of aftermarket support powered by GuardDog Connect.

“Through our Mack Certified Uptime Centers, we are improving the throughput of the dealership,” says Walsh. “We are establishing dedicated uptime bays for repairs taking less than four hours. The end result is quicker turnaround for all of our customers, particularly those with these quick fixes.”

Daimler Trucks uses Virtual Technician to eliminate any surprises. “Virtual Technician’s core functionality is valuable for fleets of all applications,” says Matthew Pfaffenbach, director, telematics, Daimler Trucks North America.

“Its ability to categorize engine and aftertreatment faults can help avoid unnecessary visits to a shop, ensuring the truck can continue work at the jobsite, or deliveries can be made on time. If it is a serious issue, the fleet is in the know right away and can use that information to make a quick decision as to where to take the truck and get it repaired as fast as possible and back to work.”

Virtual Technician records engine and aftertreatment system fault code events. “Within minutes, this data is transmitted through cellular communications notifying customers via e-mail,” says Pfaffenbach. “Complete fault event details can also be viewed via the Detroit Connect portal, which will be available to customers Fall 2016.”

Critical fault codes are further analyzed by Detroit Customer Support Center (CSC) experts.

“Virtual Technician classifies fault codes into three categories: service info, service soon and service now,” says Pfaffenbach. “During select service now events, the engine data from 60 seconds

before, during and 15 seconds following the fault event is sent directly to the Detroit CSC for analysis. A CSC expert then sends a follow-up notification to the customer within 30 minutes. The notification outlines the cause of the fault event, the recommended parts to fix the problem and the nearest service locations with those parts in stock.

“Virtual Technician can help minimize downtime by helping customers make informed business decisions so that they only service their vehicles when needed,” he adds. This happens in one of two ways: 1. Virtual Technician can inform the fleet if the fault event is something that requires attention but can wait until the end of the work day or after the delivery has been made, and 2. Virtual Technician can inform the fleet if the fault is “driver actionable” — or can be resolved by the driver — allowing the fleet to avoid taking the truck in for repair.

“Twenty percent of Virtual Technician fault codes are driver actionable,” notes Pfaffenbach.

“If a truck experiences an issue that requires it be brought into a shop immediately, Virtual Technician, with the help from the Detroit CSC, can help reduce diagnostic time and help get the truck repaired right the first time.”

Virtual Technician comes standard with two years of service on any Freightliner or Western Star truck equipped with a Detroit engine.

“Currently, Virtual Technician communicates to the fleet using email so no specialized website or app is required,” says Pfaffenbach. “However, in late 2016, a new portal will be available to Detroit Connect customers. This new interface will allow users to dive deeper into specific fault events communicated through Virtual Technician.”

AN ALL-MAKES SOLUTION Navistar is also targeting uptime via its OnCommand Connection telematics system.

“It turns unscheduled downtime into a scheduled activity,” says Dave Hillman, vice president and general manager for vocational trucks.

Based on its prior telematics experience, Navistar has taken a unique approach. “We decided we were going to make OnCommand Connection an

open technology platform. We are not telling customers that if you work with International, you have to do business with our partner,” says Hillman.

There are currently 16 telematics data suppliers signed up with Navistar, with more expected in the near future. “We allow customers the freedom of choice for what works best with their operations. Then we enable it through OnCommand Connection,” Hillman explains.

Navistar recognizes that a mixed fleet is very typical as fleets merge and consolidate or acquire assets from other sources. A customer-centric approach must address this reality.

Being an open technology platform allows OnCommand Connection to service these mixed fleets. “OnCommand Connection actually works on all makes of vehicles,” says Hillman.

OnCommand Connect presents the same information regardless of brand, including the location of the closest service shops for each brand. “We have mapped out where all of the competitive dealers are located,” says Hillman. If Unit 19 is Brand X, you may need to take it to a Brand X dealer if it is a warrantable repair. ”We would rather give the customer that information so they can choose where it is best for them to take the equipment.

If it is not in the customer’s warranty, we would certainly prefer that they would go to the International dealer.”

Presenting data in a clear format was a priority. “We have a dashboard that has been very well received by customers,” Hillman states. “It makes it pretty simple. Not only is it graphic in the way information is presented, but it also uses plain English in terms of what is going on. A fault code is very cryptic. I don’t know what 197-84 means.

I have to go to some other source to figure that out. OnCommand Connection already has the repository of what the fault code is and then what needs to be done in plain English.”

The data collected transcends the long-haul fleets and can be very beneficial to vocational customers, as well. “Every truck has electronic information on it right now,” says Hillman. “Presenting that in real time to the owner or the fleet manager just allows them to keep those assets operating at their best.” ET

Sunset on 2G Network Gives Contractor

SECOND SHOT AT TELEMATICS The need to integrate data streams from multiple OEMs led to a complete telematics system overhaul for The Helm Group.

T

he transition that AT&T and Verizon have begun to replace 2G cellular networks in the U.S. with mind-bogglingly faster 4G cells looked like it was going to cost The Helm Group $35,000 to $40,000. Greg Peet, president of Heavy Equipment Services Inc., the Freeport, IL-based regional constructor’s equipment operating division, capitalized on what could have been a bad situation by upgrading telematics providers altogether, rather than investing in replacing the 190 2G telematics boxes (of 250 connected machines in the fleet) that will be obsolete by the end of 2017.

“One of the big issues for us with our previous provider was that they were unwilling to enable their application to accept standard data feeds

[from telematics devices other than the ones they sell] using the Association of Equipment Management Professionals’ (AEMP) telematics standard,” says Peet. “For our equipment that had Cat’s VisionLink system on it or Volvo’s Care Track system or Komatsu’s Komtrax, or whatever it might be — we wanted to be able to see the basics like machine location and hours in one application.”

Peet had talked with his first telematics vendor about implementing the standard from the start of their relationship.

“I made the assumption that over time they would want to embrace it, but it never came to pass,” he says. “It really didn’t make all that much difference to us for quite a while. But as more and more equipment comes to us with telematics as part of their standard build, we would really like for the data to display on one application.”

The inability to integrate data streams from the OEM boxes in the same software as the rest of his fleet inevitably convinced Peet not to upgrade the 2G devices supporting their existing telematics system.

MANAGING DATA AND MACHINES IN ONE PLACE Using original equipment telematics hardware is a lesson Peet learned early in the company’s telematics journey.

“We already had a handful of machines with OEM telematics devices

when we jumped on the telematics bandwagon four years or so ago now,” he says. “And initially we installed third-party boxes on those machines.”

Use of the standard communications protocols for telematics data that AEMP and the Association of Equipment Manufacturers developed was pretty rare at the time. So installing a redundant device on a few machines seemed like a reasonable investment to simplify managing the company’s entire fleet.

“But over time, we got more machines that came with telematics boxes on them from the factory,” Peet says. As their number grew, the cost of installing redundant devices grew less reasonable. “You want to be able to see the data from them all in one place, and manage them all the same way.”

Peet had met representatives from telematics vendor Temeda and AT&T at AEMP meetings.

Temeda and AT&T were working together to develop a heavy equipment system called EAMS. They spent some time getting Peet’s perspective on reporting capabilities for the new system.

The release of EAMS coincided with Peet’s vendor search, and he selected it for The Helm Group’s new telematics platform.

“One of the attractive things is that they are using some of my input to help develop some of their reporting,” says Peet. “It’s still in the process of being built, but looks like it’s going to be real positive. We’re going to have a lot more analytics available in the new system.

“The report that I’m most excited to see is actually a function that our old vendor built for us. I think it’s going to be called the Jobsite Utilization report,” he notes. “One of the things that was most helpful is it identified equipment that could or should be made available from one project to another.”

A single report, run for the selected job and period of time, tells you every machine that’s on the job and how many hours it worked during the period. “You

can input your rates for each piece of equipment, if you’re charging your equipment out at an internal rental type, and the system will extrapolate that into an extended cost,” Peet explains.

For example, a project manager can pull up a jobsite and look at all the equipment expenses for the previous week. The report shows which machines worked, how many hours they ran, when they arrived on the site, when they left and what the costs were for the week.

One result is improved equipment utilization.

“Superintendents would call and tell me they needed to rent a machine, and we’d walk through the utilization report,” says Peet. Using the report, they could see if the superintendent had under-used machines on the site, and quickly toggle to a company-wide view to see if there were available machines on other jobsites. “It just made

the transparency much greater. We improved our utilization and lowered our outside rental expense by exposing this data to everybody in the company.”

Peet hopes to eventually use this information to automate the billing process. “We’re going to do more integrating of telematics data into our ERP software.

Instead of having to key in the hours off a foreman’s timesheet, we’re hoping to integrate the jobsite utilization information and have those hours drive intercompany equipment billing to the jobs,” he states.

BILLING TRUE HOURS OF OPERATION

The Helm Group’s idling reduction policy intentionally eliminates any perceived subjectivity in equipment hours. Heavy Equipment Services bills operating divisions for every hour a machine runs, whether it’s at idle or under full load.

“Idling is a bad deal for equipment on a lot of different levels,” says Peet. “And the way we try to curb it is to bill the job for it. That’s why it’s important for guys to understand that they’re paying for any time the machine is running.”

into the Off-highway Market Use of propane as an alternative to diesel is gaining traction in off-road applications.

W

hen thinking of alternative fuels within the heavy-duty equipment industry, propane is not usually the first that comes to mind. School buses or lawn and garden applications such as commercial mowing tend to be the more commonly known uses. However, its use as an alternative to diesel is beginning to grow within heavier duty, high-horsepower engine applications in the off-road industry.

“For years, we’ve known that in horsepower engines of this size range, propane really performs well whether we compare it to gasoline or diesel,” says Tucker Perkins, chief business development officer at the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC).

The key driver behind the shift to propane has been the introduction of Tier 4 Final technology. “Tier 4 Final has made a diesel engine so complex, heavy and expensive that all these manufacturers of engines and the

And the solution many are starting to look toward is propane. According to Perkins, propane engines are capable of providing the same attributes as a diesel engine but in an easier to use form. “With propane, we’re able to achieve the same emissions standards with a simple three-way catalyst, and simple controls,” he states.

The Propane Education & Research Council worked with Kohler to develop a line of mobile generators powered by propane.

“We don’t see any alternatives to the complexity of a Tier 4 Final diesel engine,” he continues. “There’s really no radical emissions technology or engine technology on the market that seems to be a breakthrough, and so I think it solidifies propane’s place as a reasonable alternative fuel to diesel.”

THE COST OF PROPANE HAS TYPICALLY BEEN LOWER, ENABLING FLEETS TO SAVE ON REFUELING COSTS. When looking at the costs associated with an engine — the initial purchase, fuel, maintenance and storage and

transporting the fuel — propane’s total operating cost provides a more cost-competitive option. Diesel and gasoline prices are currently low, but fluctuate constantly. The cost of propane has typically been lower, enabling fleets to save on refueling costs.

Perkins notes that even though PERC and others have been working to demonstrate propane as a viable alternative, people often need a cataclysmic event of some sort to create a need for change. “We’ve been given that event in this Tier 4 Final emissions standard, and the shock to users in the purchase cost and maintenance complexity,” he says.

CHALLENGES TO OVERCOME PERC is beginning to see the use of propane expanding into aerial lifts and material handlers, as well as the construction rental equipment market in products such as tree chippers,

trenchers and compactors. “A lot of it is just organic from the market,” Perkins says, “which is really exciting. You see the market is clamoring for it and the manufacturers can deliver [the technology] easily.

“And we’ll continue to evolve,” he adds. “We’re starting to move into some higher horsepower applications that are very applicable to mining and offroad construction. We’re in the very beginning stages of that.”

The other challenge with bringing propane to new markets is getting the industry comfortable with finding a new fuel source. Many diesel fuel providers also supply propane, which makes this a slightly easier task. However, Perkins says it’s still necessary to ensure a quality fuel supplier is found to help make the transition to propane easier for customers. The way PERC aims to overcome this and other challenges is through education, training and experience in bringing propane to other markets.

Development and commercialization will be dependent upon market use. “It’s the ageold question: ‘Do you make the investment and hope you can demonstrate the benefits and features to the market, or do you try to get the market to come along with you?’” says Perkins.

The dual-fuel engines provide manufacturers the opportunity to test the waters on potential market adoption of propane without having to potentially invest millions of dollars in an engine program that customers may not buy.

Perkins says the off-road

segment is becoming increasingly important to PERC, and is currently a key area of focus.

Where just five years ago, there were maybe four or five pieces of equipment in a rental yard or dealer lot that could be fueled by propane, today that number is up to 10 or 11, and by the end of 2016, he anticipates it will reach 15 or 20.

“Again, it’s just all driven because the manufacturers are looking for a simpler, cheaper engine to produce, while the users are looking for an engine that’s quieter, more fuel efficient, less polluting and easier to maintain,” he states. “The market is just running to propane, which is a beautiful thing.” ET

The bottom line is you can cut to the chase and find out what you need to do to manage and operate a contracting firm of the future by finding the “experts” in your area and calling on them for some input.

THE FIVE TRUTHS LISTED WERE:

Just reviewing this list a lets you know you are in for a lot of education, training and investment in technology. And it may even appear reasonable and doable. But if you go back and read Becky’s column where she dives into the weeds a bit, you come away with a very different feeling that there is a lot more here than you expect.

I agree that these five truths are in play. I also submit that every contractor will have to comply to some degree with each of the five truths because of project/client demands.

I guess the question for every contractor out there will be “How do I implement these changes without messing it up?”

It’s a good question that needs some discussion to avoid making investments that do not provide meaningful ROI. No matter the size of your company, you will need to draft a plan covering at least a five-year period, which lists objectives, cost estimates and a timeline for implementation, along with accountability assigned to each person involved. Don’t scare yourself, but be prepared to come up with an outline after a discussion with your management team (or spouse) of the steps you need to take and the resources you need to draft a doable program.

After reading Becky’s column the first time, I thought the internal resources required to meet these requirements would be quite substantial. I suspect the national contractors could implement these programs with ease, but what about the rest of you — because we all need to get more efficient to stay competitive.

Here is how I would proceed to meet the future needs of the industry.

DEAL WITH TRUTH #5 FIRST There is education to be had from OEMs, equipment dealers, rental companies, industry associations, performance group participation, business system providers, publications, conventions, online courses, etc.

Somebody in your company has to “know” the industry and that person should determine what education is necessary and who should get it. If you need further help with this, your equipment dealer can provide industry data and sources of information. Your accountant (if they have industry expertise) can also help out. If you use an industry specific system, the system provider usually knows what is going on in the industry and how certain issues are being handled by other companies.

fter reading editor Becky Schultz’s Breaking Ground editorial column titled “5 ‘Truths’ Destined to Impact Your Construction Business” (ForConstructionPros. com/12175195), I had to contact her to compliment her on a very well written piece that summarized the five issues contractors are in the process of dealing with — or soon will be — to remain competitive and profitable. If you did not read the column, go back and do so because it is certainly an outline for your management team, whether you have a crew of 10 or a crew of 10,000.

1. Technology adoption will be essential to success.

2. Equipment is becoming more complex.

3. Jobsites will become more mechanized.

4. Efficient data management is crucial.

5. Education and training are a must to stay in the game.

TACKLE TRUTH #1 NEXT Dealing with all forms of technology is a must. I have to admit that people under 30 have the best chance of providing you with the ability to properly use your systems and other apps to make you competitive.

There are a lot of “technology experts” out there looking for jobs.

Most graduated with a degree that does not guarantee a job in their chosen field, but who are experts when it comes to dealing with technology.

Check your basement; you may have a son or daughter down there who fits your need. If you find one who can set up your laptops, tablets and other digital equipment, plus train your staff how to properly use this equipment, you have found yourself a keeper that you can develop into an industry person. Plus, they can now become a tax-paying member of society.

TELEMATICS WILL SAVE YOU TIME AND MONEY Telematics provide data and information that make you money.

You can try to decipher the data you get, or better yet, have your equipment dealer do it for you. I consider this similar to a visit to the car dealer service department. They give me the list of what they think needs to be done and I decide which items to have them service.

There is no doubt there is a learning curve here, but eventually you will learn how to prioritize what the machines are telling you.

ON TO #2 AND #3 Your equipment dealers and rental companies should be educating you about the complexity of today’s equipment. In fact, you can outsource this problem by renting the “complex” equipment, leaving the problem with the rental company.

So there you have it — a program or approach on how to implement the five truths and for a very modest investment. Use industry sources for education. Use OEMs, dealers and rental companies to help with equipment needs. Find a part-time or full-time person comfortable with technology you can hire for a modest sum.

Your individual investment on the front end is to develop a plan of what you want your firm to look like five years from now, along with an estimate of the investment required. The point here is that you can do this, no matter what size company you have, and you have to do this because the times they are changing.
