he construction industry is not just rapidly approaching but screeching headlong toward a convergence between traditional tools of the trade and technologies that can, and will, transform the way projects are completed. If you attended CONEXPO-CON/AGG last month, you understand what I’m referring to. Numerous manufacturers showcased traditional hard iron incorporating the

latest technological innovations — some deemed “future-thinking” (in other words, not ready for prime time) and others being made available for the current or next generation of machines.

For those unable to attend the show, you will find descriptions of many of these advances throughout this issue. But in brief, here’s a rundown of “hot button” items discussed and/or demonstrated

T

he automotive industry leads the way in object detection and collision mitigation systems with integrated camera and radar technology. Eliminating collisions due to natural blind spots has been a high priority in recent years and the resulting collision mitigation systems were rapidly adopted for use in the trucking industry. Now this technology is proliferating in the heavy construction market.

“This technology is mainstream in the automobile world and I see it becoming more mainstream on heavy equipment very soon,” says Sean Martell, North America mining and construction sales manager, PRECO Electronics.

“To reduce accidents, object detection must become mainstream and will as the quality of products and their ability to address different risk scenarios improves,” says Henry Morgan, director and CEO, Brigade Electronics. “Systems will definitely become more intelligent and reliable... Better camera detection of moving objects/ people/cyclists and linking of cameras to detection devices, as well as RFID and CANbus, will result in effective collision avoidance.”

Large earthmovers inherently have blind spots, which vary depending on equipment type.

To limit risks, camera technology has been widely adopted on many machines. The most basic are backup cameras. Then there are systems with multiple cameras that allow operators to scroll between viewing screens.

The most advanced multi-camera systems offer a full 360° view around the machine.

Installation of camera systems doesn’t require a lot of effort. “Camera systems are easy

to install — even 360° camera systems that provide a bird’s eye view all around the machine,” says Morgan. “[Camera systems] enable machine operators to see areas of risk, but they are not a standalone solution. There are so many demands on machine operators that a well-designed detection system is essential to help operators contend with constantly changing risks.”

PREVENT OPERATOR OVERLOAD

Being in the automotive market, Hyundai is not a newcomer to the benefits of collision avoidance systems. “We are very confident that our All-Around View Monitoring System (AAVM) and similar systems will become mainstream technologies, and it won’t take very long,” says Corey Rogers, marketing manager, Hyundai Construction Equipment Americas. “Equipment owners and operators see the value and they’re starting to demand this capability. We’re seeing greater demand in certain regions —

Benefits of factory-installed systems can vary. “It all depends on how flexible the system is — if it can be programmed by different operators,” says Morgan. “There are also many applications where retrofit is better — taking into account attachments and specific operator environments.”

Brigade Electronics offers BACKSENSE for the aftermarket. It is comprised of an 8.5” x 5” radar sensor connected to an in-cab audio-visual display that uses LED distance indicators. The unit emits a tone that increases in pulse rate the closer an object is to the external sensor. display. They also offer an optional Smart View feature, which provides an aerial, bird’s eye view of the machine and its 360° surroundings. “Rear view cameras are also standard on all our GPE-sized wheel loaders and articulated haulers,” says McLean.

“Additionally, our H-Series wheel loaders are available with a radar detect system that works with the standard rear view and optional forward-facing camera to alert the operator of any obstacles in close proximity,” he says. “Our latest innovations in regard to object detection and visibility, however, come in the form of our new in-cab interface, Volvo Co-Pilot.”

Co-Pilot is a 10-in. touchscreen interface with a suite of machine-specific applications that provide the operator with visibility to a host of safety- and productivity-enhancing information, including machine position and real-time job progress.

“These applications currently include Dig Assist for excavators, Load Assist for wheel loaders, Compact Assist for soil and asphalt compactors, and soon we’ll offer Haul Assist for articulated haulers,” says McLean.

Dig Assist is a machine control solution that provides the operator with greater visibility to both the surroundings and job progress. “Utilizing the Co-Pilot screen, the operator can see realtime position of the boom, arm and bucket, all in relation to parameters set specifically for the task at hand, alerting the operator when target grade or depth have been reached,” McLean explains. “Dig Assist also allows for setting a height alarm to help the operator avoid power lines or other obstacles.

The operator has the ability to simultaneously monitor up to four views of the machine, including side, front, top and 3D views. The system can be outfitted with Smart View, which provides a 360° aerial view of the machine and its surroundings.

Dig Assist reduces the need for staff working in close proximity to the excavator. “By being

able to see depth and grade in real time from the cab, Dig Assist reduces the need for manual depth checks conducted by someone in the trench,” says McLean. “Similarly, by providing the ability to use in-field design and quick measure functionality directly from the cab, the need for on-site surveyors or engineers may be greatly reduced.”

NOT ALL TECHNOLOGIES ARE CREATED EQUAL Not all object detection systems are equal in terms of performance. Consider ultrasonic technology, for example. “The problem with ultrasonic technologies is that they are short range and fail if covered by dirt, mud, snow or ice,” says Morgan.

Radar technology offers a more robust solution. “Pulse and FMCW radar are far more accurate in adverse weather conditions

than ultrasonic or laser technology,” says Martell. “Radar is capable of penetrating hazards through... severe conditions that the other two technologies are not capable of doing.

“Radar is also much more robust,” he adds, “because the technology is solid-state electronics, and therefore does not have moving parts inside the sensor like that of ultrasonic sensors.”

Compare radar systems before making a choice. “Differentiators among today’s radar solutions are determined by how flexible the solution is, the cost of installation and the speed which it can be implemented,” says Martell.

“Another unique feature that is often overlooked is the radar’s ease of use. A well-designed radar solution improves the efficiency and productivity of the driver for their respective industry.”

Make sure the radar can

measure potential hazards effectively. “Effectiveness depends on radar resolution,” says Morgan.

“Generally, a radar system for mobile equipment can detect objects with a resolution of between about 1 meter down to 10 cm. Low-end systems tend to have a short range and poorer resolution with perhaps three pre-defined zones (red, amber and green) that can only discern distance from the radar head.”

High-end systems, on the other hand, can detect both distance and direction, typically have a range of 98 ft. (30 meters) and are highly programmable. “They allow operators to set variable detection ranges and widths, up to five zones each specified with depth and set blind zones, so items like the vehicle tires can be ignored,” says Morgan. “These systems can also be calibrated so ‘zero’

is at a specified distance from the radar head, as the radar can’t always be installed at the rearmost edge of the vehicle. LEDs for each zone are always active, while audible alerts for the outer zones can be silenced if required to avoid operator annoyance. A trigger output (that creates the alert warning) is programmable to an independent specific distance to activate an additional alert or trigger an event for a data recorder.”

MINING LEADS THE WAY The mining industry was an early adopter of object detection systems. “This technology is being used extensively in underground mining and is growing in above-ground applications and is proven to be effective,” says Martell. “The success of object detection systems depends on the jobsite and the application.

OBJECT DETECTION KEY TO AUTONOMY With autonomous machine solutions on the visible horizon, there will be a significant push to develop even better and more sophisticated object detection technology.

Radar technology, which is dependable in all weather conditions, will be a key enabler. “In order for an autonomous vehicle to safely navigate our public transportation infrastructure, the vehicle will need accurate and dependable radar collision avoidance technology,” says Sean Martell, PRECO Electronics. “We also believe that the role of radar is yet to be defined as a trigger for a variety of autonomous vehicle actions.”

What works at one site won’t necessarily work at another. It is important for safety professionals to do their due diligence to determine what system is best suited for their needs.”

The key is operator awareness. “Komatsu believes the operator is in the best position to evaluate and respond to the risks and operating conditions around the vehicle,” says Don Lindell, senior product manager, electric drive trucks, Komatsu America Corp. “The most effective systems use multiple layers of

coverage that ensure redundancy and provide operator confidence.

Often, this uses a mixture of active and passive tools.”

Komatsu offers the KomVision system for off-highway mining trucks. “This system synthesizes radar and camera inputs into a single display that provides the operator with a 360° view around the machine, as well as warnings about objects surrounding the vehicle,” says Lindell. “Even more advanced technology is deployed on the Komatsu FrontRunner

Autonomous Haulage System, and is used for observing road conditions for autonomous trucks as they operate in a mine.”

This is not as easy as it may first appear. “Object detection in the mining environment is far more difficult than most people initially expect,” says Lindell. “The basic concept is easy to grasp, but the challenges of actual road conditions, environmental impact, object size and reflectivity and other factors make the reality a computational challenge. The autonomous

system uses a combination of radar and lidar that provides the multiple layers of short- and mid-range coverage necessary for object differentiation as well as road condition monitoring.”

The technology continues to rapidly evolve. “At this time, these systems are surprisingly accurate and newer technologies will bring even more capabilities,” says Lindell. “The real challenge is the continued development required as technology changes. The rate of change is so fast in this area that it requires

significant investment to keep on top of the opportunities.”

OEMs are in a unique position to integrate this technology into larger mining equipment and, perhaps someday, larger construction equipment.

“In order to protect [equipment] from road damage and to best leverage their capabilities, these systems require an integrated machine design,” says Lindell.

“It’s easy for aftermarket suppliers to bolt on technology... but it often fails after a short time or doesn’t live up to its potential. Additionally, because of the short life cycle of radar technology, the OEM needs an aggressive development plan that includes planning for component obsolescence. For high-value assets like mining equipment, factoryauthorized solutions are the best way to ensure high-quality performance over the long run.” ET

“The industry will always need skilled operators, but smart technology like machine control and automation can certainly speed up the learning process for inexperienced operators,” says John Bauer, brand marketing manager, Case Construction Equipment. “These technologies also make seasoned operators more efficient, allowing them to focus less on precision grading and more on safe operation on the jobsite.”

There are many ways to measure productivity. “But it really comes down to completing more work with less effort, eliminating rework, reducing maintenance and fuel costs and more intelligently utilizing equipment to get more out of your fleet,” says Bauer. If you can reduce the number of passes it takes to final grade a site, you reduce engine hours and fuel costs, as well as lessen wear and tear on groundengaging tools and other machine components. “My advice to new — dozer operators is to make sure that you’re utilizing all of the technology features available. They are there to help make you more efficient.”

S VOID DRIVETRAINS INCREASE EFFICIENCY While manufacturers still debate the pros and cons of hydrostatic (hystat) vs. mechanical drivelines, development continues on more sophisticated drive systems that simplify operation.

On its recently unveiled D6T dozer, Caterpillar wanted to combine the benefits of a mechanical powershift with those of a hydrostatic transmission.

“Hystat dozers are definitely easy to operate,” says Meeker. “The trick with the D6T was to create a transmission and control system that provides the durability of a powershift with the ease of operation of a hystat.”

The solution came in a hybrid approach. “The latest D6T has a four-speed powershift transmission coupled with a lock-up clutch torque divider that provides exceptionally smooth shifting and amazing efficiencies,” says Meeker. The D6T offers 2.5% more productivity and reduces fuel burn by 15% to 30% vs. the previous generation model, all while giving the operator 30 speeds of control and smooth shifts.

Hydrostatic technology continues to evolve. “The hydrostatic drive systems have improved throughout the years,” notes Meeker. “On the latest D6K dozer and 963K track loader, we have redesigned the hystat system to further improve performance, efficiency and reliability. These systems provide lower fuel consumption for customers and longer life.”

But Caterpillar doesn’t believe there is a one size fits

all solution. “We design and implement drive systems that are tailored to the machine and application,” says Meeker.

“Smaller dozers typically work on jobs where the speed control, maneuverability and ease of use of a hystat is valued. Larger dozers need the durability and long-term efficiency that a powershift can provide.”

There are pros and cons to both. “Hystat systems are great for maneuverability, variable speed and easy operation,” notes Meeker. “In larger dozers, however, we feel the powershift transmission is still the best choice for long-term durability and efficiency. Over the last couple of years, we have introduced Enhanced and Advanced AutoShift systems that combine the benefits of the durability of a powershift and the versatility of a hystat.”

General maintenance for both types of systems is similar, with filter and oil changes having a similar hourly cost. Long-term wear is the bigger consideration.

“At the beginning of life, both powershift and hystat systems are very efficient in terms of putting power to the ground,” says Meeker. “Later in life is where the differences start to appear.

Powershift transmissions retain their efficiency longer in general, and require less expensive component rebuilds when repair time does occur. This is often reflected in resale values of hystat vs. powershift machines.”

John Deere uses hydrostatic drive systems on its entire dozer line. “Hydrostatic drive systems have proven reliable, durable, productive and efficient in all size classes from small dozers to large production class dozers,” Horstman states. “John Deere hydrostatic dozers provide superior control and maneuverability with features like counter rotate, full-power turns and infinitely variable travel speed. In general, a hydrostatic dozer is more efficient at delivering power to the ground than a torque converter machine, which ultimately means it takes less fuel to do the same job with a hydrostatic dozer.”

Case Construction Equipment utilizes hydrostatic drive systems on all of its dozers from the 650L up to the 2050M. “There are fewer moving parts with the hydrostatic transmission than there would be with a powershift. You’re basically dealing with hoses, pumps and motors,” says Bauer. “There are no gears, so the operator has much more control over the speed of the machine.”

Plus, operators don’t have to be concerned with proper gear selection. “One of the benefits of

hydrostatic transmissions from an ease-of-operation standpoint is that you have a variable control on the speed. A simple up or down with a button on your left-hand control will change the speed smoothly,” Bauer points out.

The hydrostatic transmission also ensures constant power transfer under load and allows for on-the-spot counter rotation with full power turns. Operators can customize machine responsiveness by adjusting steering and shuttle sensitivity settings between Smooth, Moderate or Aggressive.

Liebherr has literally years of experience with hydrostatic drive systems. “Liebherr has utilized a hydrostatic drive system on all of its dozers for over three decades,” says Nick Rogers, product specialist, Liebherr USA Co. “Benefits include a

constant engine speed, which increases engine life and reduces fuel consumption; the drive automatically adjusts to the working conditions, providing smooth, uninterrupted power transfer from engine to track; and excellent maneuverability, allowing for quick and precise steering.”

The hydrostatic system also enables the addition of features to balance traction and power. “These advanced features improve the performance of the dozer across the board.

The hydrostatic travel drive system provides maximum tractive effort for the dozer and reduces track slip,” says Rogers. “This also allows the operator to concentrate on the work instead of trying to monitor speed and traction. It allows the operator to concentrate on the work

It’s no secret that grade and slope control cuts the time to complete a task while accomplishing finish grade in fewer passes.

The impact such technologies have on undercarriage life must be evaluated using the correct metrics. “Consider that dozer automatic systems (be it GPS, Slope Assist, other features) are primarily valued at their ability to improve productivity and reduce time on the jobsite,” says Meeker. “If a dozer’s efficiency is improved, it may be pushing more material per pass, and therefore burning undercarriage at a faster rate if measured hourly. If measured by the ton/yard of material moved, then the undercarriage cost is actually lowered. Of course, fewer passes on the job will definitely reduce the undercarriage wear on the job.”

TRACTION CONTROL SAVES WEAR AND INCREASES PRODUCTIVITY Traction control is essential to maximize productivity. “From our studies in dozer productivity, maximum productivity is gained with ‘Big Load Slow,’ maximum blade load at full speed in first gear,” says Meeker. “Traction control helps the operator determine what that maximum blade load is, and helps to reach that most productive speed in fewer passes. Conditions and materials change throughout the day and features such as Auto Traction Control help the operator react to those changes quicker and continue to be productive.”

In the Caterpillar K Series dozers, the Auto Traction Control system combines several inputs to determine if the track is slipping and apply appropriate changes to the hystat system to reduce track spin. “In dozers equipped with Cat GRADE with 3D, the AutoCarry feature actively senses machine and

track movement, comparing the two to determine track slip,” says Meeker. “Just as track slip is beginning to occur, the system actively manages the blade to reduce track slip, all while maximizing the load on the blade for the most productivity.”

The goal is to push the maximum load possible. “With a

load management system, the machine will always attempt to optimize the balance between torque and speed to maximize productivity,” says Case’s Bauer.

“As the dozer builds a load in front of the blade, the load management system reduces the track speed to provide more torque to the ground. This functions automatically without any operator input. It takes a lot of the downshifting and other adjustments out of the picture so the operator can focus on running the machine safely and efficiently.

“Load management systems also help guard against engine stall when the machine is pushing massive loads,” he continues.

“This helps to reduce wear on the undercarriage and other components of the machine.”

By automating the balance of available pushing power and speed, the dozer becomes easier to operate. “The power management system on John Deere dozers is automatic and makes the machine easy to control, regardless of operator skill level,” says Horstman. “When the machine encounters a heavy blade load, the system simply adjusts hydrostatic load to maintain ideal engine rpm, allowing the operator to concentrate on the work at hand, not shifting.

excessive track wear caused by slipping the track,” he adds.

TAILOR RESPONSE TO THE JOB The ability to customize the dozer can result in productivity gains. “In Liebherr dozers, operators have the ability to adjust the responsiveness in the blade control, as well as adjust speed control for the particular speed range settings,” says Rogers.

“That certainly helps the operator cater to not only their needs for productive operation, but also the needs of the particular job they are on at the time.”

Dozer controls have witnessed significant technological advancements. “New control customizations allow operators to better tailor machine performance to jobsite conditions — setting steering and shuttle sensitivity,” notes Bauer. “Case 1150M, 1650M and 2050M dozers feature a new electrohydraulic joystick that further simplifies operation by providing better feel and responsiveness.

Fingertip blade shake allows for a quick blade cleaning, and a grade mode reduces blade speed by 40% for increased accuracy.”

John Deere K-Series dozers allow the operator to customize the machine feel through settings in the display monitor.

“The operator can easily adjust ground speed limits, steering modulation, decelerator pedal, hydraulic speed and FNR aggressiveness,” says Horstman. “As an example, some operators like a quick direction change when shifting from forward to reverse.

If you want the machine to ‘roll out’ a little when shifting from forward to reverse, you can have that, too.”

It’s about optimizing the machine to the operator. “The most efficient operators I’ve seen are the ones that treat the machine as an extension of their person,” Meeker observes.

“Tuning the steering, forward and reverse speeds, blade control and any other factors truly helps that operator become more responsive to job conditions and to be more productive. It’s not only the initial setup, but being able to easily make changes as the materials and job change throughout the day that makes life easier, as well.

“The best operators are truly artists with the machine,” he adds, “and tuning controls is essential to equipping the operator and the machine to be great together.” ET

Evolving Designs Influence Power Source Selection Emissions standards, the availability of different fuels and technological advances impact how users spec, purchase and rent these machines.

G

enerators and air compressors have evolved over the years, allowing them to deliver more power and air in smaller and even more reliable packages. Despite this evolution, consumer buying habits have remained relatively constant. Over the last four to five years, however, emissions standards, the availability of different fuels and technological advances in communication have potentially altered how users spec, purchase and rent their machines.

How have these changes impacted users? The discussion necessarily begins with Tier 4 Final and the cost associated with making diesel engines compliant. As Todd Howe, global

generator products manager, Doosan Portable Power, explains, prior to Tier 4, the normal life cycle of diesel-powered equipment was somewhere between seven and 10 years. Since 2011, portable power products have already gone through two redesigns and each came with significant cost increases driven by the engine emissions technology.

Tier 4 cost implications have changed buying habits. “Some contractors have become more cautious of the higher acquisition costs of Tier 4 Final-compliant machines,” says Nav Sharma, senior product manager, Rental & Infrastructure for Sullair.

“They have started looking for smaller air compressors, attempting to do more with less.”

The cost difference alone between one- and two-tool compressors can be dramatic, notes Eric Massinon, business development manager, Chicago Pneumatic. “The cost of a single tool compressor — the smaller horsepower engine of which doesn’t require aftertreatment — is an attractive option for contractors and other users looking to save money,” he adds.

MORE COST-EFFECTIVE OPTIONS Higher equipment costs are changing buying habits in other obvious ways. “Owners

are keeping older equipment longer or they’re getting these machines remanufactured,” says Howe. “The costs for remanufactured generators are somewhere between 60% to 75% of the actual costs of new machines and come with a full factory warranty.”

The cost challenge is made more daunting because Tier 4 Final casts a long shadow across all equipment lines. The increased costs apply as much to backhoes, skid-steer loaders and excavators as they do to generators and air compressors.

Budgets have forced contractors to be even more cost conscious across the board.

The added cost of Tier 4 Final equipment raises a host of questions that can ultimately lead some users toward renting vs. purchasing generators. “They may begin to question the value of ownership when determining their generators are not used that often, or when computing how much time and money its costs to transport generators between jobsites,” says Russell Schuster, managing director, Aggreko North America. “Tier 4 Final generators are also much more complex than their predecessors and require a special skill set to service and maintain, demanding another commitment from owners.”

“At the end of the day, the Tier 4 Final technology has cleaned up emissions. The data has proven that. And fuel efficiency has gone up marginally,” says Massinon. However, overall owning and operating costs are higher. “In addition to

higher acquisition costs, service costs have gone up thanks to more things that can go wrong.

Overall, the new technology hasn’t caused serious problems on the service front, but servicing equipment requires a higher level of technical knowledge to initiate repairs.”

ADDED VALUE OFFSETS COSTS To make up for any cost increases, generator and compressor manufacturers have given customers more bang for their buck by adding more advanced features to their products.

“The Tier 4 Final technology, including electronic engines and controls, have allowed better

FUELING UP

“The electronics in Tier 4 Final engines make it easier for manufacturers to offer telemetric options to remotely provide engine and compressor parameters to end users,” adds Massinon.

“Telematics allow for geofencing, asset management, service and maintenance services, increased uptime and remote troubleshooting to contractors on jobsites,” says Sharma.

“Manufacturers have also taken advantage of the opportunity to update designs for easier serviceability and maintenance.”

Ready access to equipment operating parameters is beneficial whether you own or rent the equipment. “Rental stores can take advantage of telemetrics by

monitoring customers’ machines, allowing them to respond to and fix a problem before customers even know there’s an issue,” says Howe.

Aggreko provides such services to both buyers and renters of its generator products. “We have a 24/7 remote operation in Louisiana that monitors key performance indicators on customers’ units — everything from voltage and amps to fuel and oil level, engine temperature and so forth,” Schuster points out. “Not only can the operations center spot a

“The industry has been slow to adapt or accept gasoline and natural gas engines and continues to stay with tested and tried diesel-powered units,” says Sharma. “One of the main reasons is to remain consistent with other equipment in their fleet, including pickup trucks.”

“Once someone gets used to diesel power, it’s difficult to change,” adds Jeremy Bailey, air products product manager Americas, Doosan Portable Power. “We offer alternatives to Tier 4 Final diesel products such as our gasoline-powered C185

There are occasions when the fuel choice is application specific.

“Using natural gas is commonplace in oil and gas sectors where fuel comes directly from the wellhead. In North Dakota, West Texas and Oklahoma, 60% to 70% of generator fleets are powered by natural gas,” says Howe.

“Its popularity in other sectors, however, is limited because of the fuel’s inability to be easily packaged.”

‘There is also the issue of making engines compatible with different fuels,” adds Massinon.

“Oil patch applications make natural gas an option, but there are filtration issues depending on the fuel. And changing over a diesel engine to gas requires modifications.”

“Diesel power is still the choice for most contractors,” Anne Feudner, product manager for mobile generators, Kohler, acknowledges. “But that doesn’t mean it’s their best fuel option.

Depending on the application, propane or even natural gas may save them up to 25% or more on fuel costs alone. This can be very

industry. “Natural gas and propane generators save between 30% to 40% on the cost of fuel compared to diesel generators,” Schuster reports. “We found our larger units to be effective at large construction and infrastructure sites, especially in cities where natural gas is available.

“At these locations, it often made sense to create a small distribution center or grid with a large, mobile generator that could replace 30 portable units,” he continues. “The move would reduce the costs and hassle

associated with operating several smaller generators.”

BACK TO THE FUTURE While Tier 4 Final is in the rearview mirror, there is still work ahead. “Engine manufacturers are planning to consolidate their offerings to both European Union Stage V emissions and Tier 4 Final compliance,” says Sharma. “Although not effective until 2019, they will start planning and designing their equipment for commonality between the two markets.”

Equipment manufacturers will also be harnessing new technology in their generators and air compressors. “The next frontier will be energy storage,” says Howe. “Within the next three to five years, look for batteries and capacitors to store excess energy delivered by generators, similar to technology used today in hybrid cars. When batteries become fully charged, they would provide the power, allowing engines to shut down.

“Among benefits are obvious fuel cost savings,” he continues.

“The battery power would also minimize subjecting engines to peak-and-valley power demands, helping Tier 4 Final engines operate at peak efficiency.”

Howe notes this technology could be made available across the board, but would be especially useful when generators are required to start large motors, then run on reduced demand.

Aggreko employs a version of this “hybrid power” at certain construction and event locations where demand varies throughout the day and evening. “The next step would be to incorporate solar power technology to assist the generator in recharging the battery,” Schuster comments.

As Massinon points out, the potential to use battery power may be more appropriate for backup power than for occasions when a generator serves as a prime source of electricity.

Bailey believes the same hybrid technology will eventually be available in air compressors. But first, manufacturers must find ways to either generate more air per horsepower or store enough energy to generate more horsepower. Only time will tell. ET

RUNNING PARALLEL Kohler’s mobile paralleling box, which is designed for use with its gaseous and diesel mobile generators, can offer solutions to customers in a variety of ways. It allows users to mix and match different size generators to meet job requirements. Four of the boxes can be used to parallel as many as eight generators. The Decision-Maker 3500 digital controller provides the paralleling intelligence.

“Individual paralleled generators can be set to shut off automatically when the demand isn’t there, saving customers on fuel costs and run time associated with a larger generator,” Kohler’s Anne Feudner explains.

“Paralleling also offers a built-in backup for customers where generator downtime isn’t an option.

“Paralleling is also a way for rental centers to better manage their fleets. If they don’t have the size generator a customer needs, being able to parallel a couple of smaller generators may offer the solution,” Feudner points out.

This becomes a win-win for the customer and the rental center.

Quarry Discovers NEW SAVINGS WITH DRONE DATA Vista Sand bought a fixed-wing UAV to save time and surveying costs on stockpiles. It quickly discovered production efficiencies can be gained by measuring stockpile volumes, laying out more efficient roads and loading floors and saving up to 30% on dryer fuel.

exas sand and gravel quarry Vista Sand has seen operation-improving uses for an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), or drone, continue to unfold as its various operating groups gain exposure to the technology. The company bought its fixed-wing UAV in 2015 to save time and surveying costs on monthly stockpile volumetrics.

It quickly discovered production efficiencies can be gained by measuring stockpile volumes weekly, laying out more efficient roads and loading floors and saving up to 30% on dryer fuel.

Getting stockpiles surveyed for volume to complete Vista’s month-end reconciliations had proven a time-consuming routine. Surveyors could deliver data on the quarry’s 40 or more acres of stockpiles in about five days.

But getting them in to measure a stockpile for daily planning was out of the question.

The drone, on the other hand, can fly a programmed mission over Vista’s 800-acre

facility (which produces more than 10 million tons of material per year) in about 15 minutes.

Turnaround time to process the raw data into actionable information is about four hours.

Company planners conservatively budget eight hours to generate data maps and 24 hours for fullsite aerial photography.

Vista now flies missions weekly to measure stockpile volumes; the data supports production and sales planning. At month end, it routinely adds topography measurement of the active pit to the stockpile-volume flights. Detailed aerial photography of the entire site is gathered at quarter, and at year-end, Vista gets a full spectrum of information, with stockpile volumes, full-site aerials and topography of the full site.

MEASUREMENT ACCURACY The drone cross-references its imagery with geospacial data, assigning latitude, longitude and elevation — all corrected for accuracy with reference signals — to every image. The data can measure stockpiles, haul roads, loading floors and anything else on a site with survey-like accuracy.

“Having the data in real time, or near real time, has opened

up the way we think,” says Joe Drew, Vista’s director of technical services. “As we’ve brought this UAV into our arsenal of tools, it’s allowed people on the production teams to say, ‘Hey, I’d like to have data on a weekly basis or a daily basis, if you can provide it.’ And we absolutely can with the UAV. That allows them to make decisions more rapidly, which ultimately lowers our cost per ton.”

Data has become essential.

Aerial images stitched together into site maps have improved communication far more than anticipated. Drew says many days at Vista start with decision makers conferring over aerial photos. The aerial maps are used to communicate with production crews working the site.

“Whether it’s decisions about what to send to the dryer, simple stockpile volumes or planning where to put this pile or that pile, we can do all the planning now with maps that the UAV provides us that show volumes, moisture contents and more,” Drew states. “It creates the tools that help us place our stockpiles in a more efficient manner. We have 40+ acres of stockpiles and keeping track of what we put in each stockpile, and what its moisture content is, can get pretty convoluted pretty quickly.”

“The aerial images have also been extremely beneficial for planning new construction projects and planning and designing haul roads,” adds Matt Jones, Vista’s site survey technician and remote pilot.

MORE EFFICIENT MAPPING Drone maps help plan roads for access to the stockpiles, and help the company gauge mining progress toward mine boundaries. Georeferenced images can measure haul road and loading pad condition and slope.

“With the drone, we don’t have to stop production to do a survey and we can actually see differences in the pad angles that might increase the costs on loaders,” says Drew. “We get real fast results, and we can make adjustments on the fly to lower the cost of the yellow iron.

“One of the biggest benefits of the UAV mapping for us is the reduction in moisture content,” he continues. “By mapping our stockpiles with moisture contents, communicating clearly what’s ready to go to the dryer, not putting wet material over dry material — that’s allowed us to drop our moisture rates [going into the dryer] about two points, from 7% to 5% for sand going in. That could mean a 30% reduction in fuel cost. So it’s a huge amount for us.”

The dryers work best with material at consistent moisture levels. “When we have upset conditions — material that’s changing in moisture rate — we have to slow down the feed,” says Drew. “That ruins your throughput, which also hits your bottom line.”

Up-to-date drone data tells Vista the current moisture rate of each stockpile, allowing the company to maximize drying efficiency. “It not only lowers the fuel costs, but also allows you to keep tons moving at the maximum throughput through your driers,” says Drew. “It’s a double benefit.”

He adds, “Once we had the UAV in our hands, I felt exactly how I did about the Internet when it was being developed in the ’90s. We knew it would be great for data collection, but ‘What else could we use this for?’ And, boom, it’s saving us money every single time we try something new. It’s one of those paradigm shifts, I guess you could say — for us anyway.” ET

John Dotto, brand marketing manager at Case, says the compact dozer loader concept came about because contractors are continually looking for ways to get more out of their equipment. Dubbed “Project Minotaur,” Dotto says the DL450 provides the power and performance of a small dozer in a platform that also serves as a loader capable of running skid-steer and compact track loader (CTL) attachments.

“Contractors can now have one machine on site that handles all of these items,” he says.

The core feature of the DL450 is a C-frame dozer interface that pins directly into the chassis. This ensures all operating power and stresses are channeled through the chassis and not the arms of the machine. The C-frame interface can also be unpinned to free the loader arms for use with a bucket or other attachment typically used with a CTL or skid steer.

When designing the dozer loader, Case engineers wanted to include the pushing power and frame strength of a radial lift machine, so they combined the frame of the current TV380 CTL with a radial-lift loader arm design similar to that of a 465 skid steer. Because the TV380 has a robust structure built for heavy stress, combining that platform with the strength of the radial arm design ensures the DL450 can provide maximum pushing performance.

Steel tracks and grousers are included on the DL450 to aid its use as a dozer. Using steel instead of rubber tracks creates a heavier undercarriage to put more pressure on the ground, while the grousers “bite” into the ground for improved traction. “More ground pressure and better bite are a formula for better tractive force or pushing performance,” says Dotto.

Dozer performance is further aided by the inclusion of additional steel and support built into the machine, which also ensures it meets required ROPS standards.

JCB launched the 11-ton-class Hydradig, a new tool-carrying solution suited for use in congested urban environments and on busy roads. The twin articulation boom is able to provide a lift capacity of 2,205 lbs. through 360° on dual tires. A tilt-rotator with tilt capability and 360˚ rotation ensures easy handling and placement of loads.

Stepless hydrostatic drive to all four wheels and an extended all-wheel-steer chassis enable the machine to achieve a 25-mph maximum travel speed. By using a chassis based on a Loadall telescopic handler, the Hydradig is able to provide two-wheel steer, four-wheel steer and crab steering. There is also an optional reverse-steer function that changes the direction of the steering wheels when rotated at 180°. A front axle with +/-8° of oscillation and constant four-wheel drive with a stepless hydrostatic transmission ensure maximum traction and maneuverability on tough terrain. The unit is powered by a JCB EcoMax Tier 4 Final engine. With the driveline mounted in the lower chassis, the operator’s cab and upperstructure provide 360° visibility.

JCB also debuted the Teleskid, the first skid steer and compact track loader offering a telescopic boom. It has a forward reach of 8 ft., a lift height of 13 ft. and can dig below its chassis to a depth of 3 ft. It is also able to combine vertical and radial lift capability. A bucket-positioning leveling system allows the bucket level to be set and maintained throughout the boom’s range of movement. The unit will feature a fully enclosed cab that is 33% larger than industry average, and JCB’s myCHOICE software, allowing control responsiveness and joystick sensitivity to be tailored to suit operator preferences. A 74-hp Ecomax Tier 4 Final engine will provide high torque at a low rpm.

his spring offered the ideal climate for major vocational truck OEMs and suppliers to lay their cards on the table. It started with the SAE Automotive shows, continued with World of Concrete and CONEXPO-CON/AGG and wrapped up with the NTEA Work Truck Show.

Ultimately, some of the most significant introductions were not actually trucks but services and programs that can make your business run more efficiently. Reducing downtime and easing body upfits topped the list, while many expanded their product offerings for the vocational market.

FORD ROLLS OUT COMMERCIAL VEHICLE CENTER PROGRAM The new Ford Commercial Vehicle Center program includes more than 670 dealers nationwide committed to offering fleet and commercial customers the vehicles, financing options and service support their businesses need. This program replaces and expands upon the Ford Business Preferred Network that was originally introduced in 1986 as Main Street USA. Commercial Vehicle Center dealers offer a wide selection of instock Ford commercial vehicles, and use a proprietary diagnostic software, Commercial Vehicle Tools, to recommend the most appropriate vehicle specifications for a customer’s specific business needs.

They offer test drives at customer locations, as well as a range of unique fleet vehicle financing options and incentives.

To maximize customer vehicle uptime, participating dealer service departments are open at least 55 hours per week, and new stocking programs help improve parts availability.

Ford is investing $4.5 billion in 13 new electrified vehicles in the next five years. These include a new fully electric small SUV, a highvolume autonomous vehicle, a hybrid F-150, a hybrid Mustang, a Transit Custom plug-in hybrid and two new pursuit-rated hybrid police vehicles.

“The eQVM program extends support to the vocational truck industry where customers need relatively small numbers of specialized vehicles,” says Richard Cupka Jr., Ford sustainability and QVM program manager. “There is no one-size-fits-all work truck.”

The program kicks off with three developers: XL Hybrids, Motiv Power Systems and Lightning Hybrids. These companies offer electrification or hydraulic hybrid solutions for a range of Ford vehicles popular with fleet and commercial customers, including the F-150, F-250 to F-550 Super Duty, F-650 and F-750 medium-duty trucks, Transit and E-Series vans and chassis and F-53/F-59 stripped chassis.

RAM USES TECHNOLOGY TO EASE UPFITS Ram Commercial announced the Augmented Reality Upfit Configurator and Q Pro programs to simplify and improve how commercial upfitters, dealers and customers view, certify and install a wide array of truck-mounted equipment.

Introduced late last year, the Ram Augmented Reality Upfit Configurator is a computer-generated visual program allowing upfitters and dealers to virtually showcase a number of body and equipment solutions to customers. Prospective buyers can virtually walk around the vehicle and even view inside to assess the various options via computer simulation. Originally offered on the Ram ProMaster full-size van, the configurator has now expanded to the Ram ProMaster City and the entire Ram Chassis Cab line (3500, 4500 and 5500).

The Q Pro is a new qualification process for upfitters to certify their product with Ram Engineering. Q Pro allocates Ram Engineering resources to survey, make recommendations and certify upfitter products. Mack Trucks is bringing uptime solutions to customers with its legacy vehicles. Working with its partner Geotab, a telematics technology provider, the company now offers connectivity for older Mack vehicles that are not equipped with GuardDog Connect telematics hardware.

After installing a small Geotab telematics device, the Mack Uptime Center will be able to monitor the same critical vehicle codes as the GuardDog Connect hardware. If an issue is detected, Mack OneCall agents will evaluate and provide the customer’s designated contact with decision-critical information through Mack ASIST, an online communications and service management portal. GM BACK IN MEDIUM-DUTY BUSINESS General Motors confirmed that Chevrolet’s all-new Class 4/5 commercial truck will be powered by a Duramax engine and Allison transmission and is on track to launch in 2018. The truck is being jointly developed by Chevrolet and Navistar.

Technical specifications for the new medium-duty truck, including cab and frame dimensions, horsepower and torque, GAWR, GVWR, payload and other ratings, will be released closer to launch.

Chevrolet also announced that it is expanding its range of Low Cab Forward trucks with a new dock-height Class 6 model, the 6500XD. The vehicles are expected to be available by the end of the year.

The 2018 Chevrolet Low Cab Forward 6500XD, like its Class 3, 4 and 5 stablemates, is designed for driver comfort, greater visibility and serviceability and ease of upfit. NISSAN EXPANDS TITAN LINE Nissan completed the body style offerings for its full-size pickups with the new 2017 Titan and Titan XD King Cab models. The King Cab joins the current Crew Cab and Single Cab offerings, providing six-person seating, wide-opening rear doors and available “rear seat delete” option that presents a flat rear floor to expand secure in-cab storage space.

“Now, with the addition of a half-ton Titan, our new Endurance V8, three body configurations, three bed lengths and a range of grade levels and equipment packages, we’re covering nearly every segment in the personal and commercial full-size truck markets,” says Fred Diaz, vice president and general manager, Nissan North America’s Trucks and Light Commercial Vehicles division.

ealthcare coverage is a complicated, confusing topic that seems to change daily. With continuous media coverage regarding ACAs, HRAs, ARAs and HSAs, it’s almost impossible to interpret the insurance proposals from insurance companies, brokers, consultants and even associations that have insurance plans in place for members. This leaves company CEOs and CFOs challenged to provide proper healthcare benefits to employees for a reasonable amount of money, and ensure employees believe the benefits they’re receiving are reasonable, as well.

Large contractors most likely have internal or external help to decipher the different programs and determine what best fits their operation. Those using union employees have the issue settled for them (as long as the plans are properly funded). But contractors with 50 employees or less will probably not hire a consultant to help manage the insurance maze.

This being the world we live in, there is not much you can do but investigate different programs available. Do some homework via discussions with insurance companies, associations, peers and other service providers to find out what plans are offered and what is working for your type of business.

I don’t believe that management can under perform when it comes to employee benefits if they hope to attract and retain quality employees, which we all know is a real plus when it comes to doing profitable, quality work. If you recall, a couple of months ago, we discussed the labor market and what employers are doing to attract those qualified workers (ForConstructionPros.com/12294085). As noted, quality healthcare programs are at the top of the list. With additional construction work on the horizon, CEOs are going to have to bite the bullet if they hope to have the proper staffing they need.

So, we know this health insurance issue is a mess, costly, confusing and very complicated.

Consequently, CEOs are forced to: ˜˜ find out what other players in their market are doing; ˜˜ shop the program with various providers; ˜˜ examine various programs available to employees; ˜˜ and even get employees involved in the process of picking a program that works best for them as long as they understand how they will participate in the cost.

My guess is the better the program, the more employees will be willing to contribute to the cost.

The CEO’s investigations should give him/her an idea of what other players in their market are collecting from their employees.

LOOK BEYOND TRADITIONAL HEALTHCARE CHOICES The key to the healthcare dilemma is to separate the everyday health issues from the catastrophic costly events. And if you can separate the insurance company activities along the same lines to reduce the “cost” of insurance company overhead,

that is even better. In short, health insurance coverage today is out of hand, covering everything with no incentive for the user to shop the price because there is a lack of transparency regarding pricing and costs. It’s a win-win model for insurance companies and the healthcare industry and a lose-lose for employers and employees.

The bright side is you do have options, some of which are very attractive from both a coverage and cost perspective. Out of those available, what are some that are working as of today? Two of them include Health Reimbursement Accounts (HRA) and Concierge Medicine (CM).

HRAs involve the employer reimbursing employees for healthcare costs. Industry surveys indicate that the monthly reimbursements for an employee with single coverage is in the $400 to $500 range and family coverage is in the $1,000 range. These amounts are set aside monthly for employees to use to pay medical-related bills or health insurance. Compared to group health plans, HRAs save on average 23% for single employees and 49% for employees with families. When you think about this, the HRA is giving employees more control over what they spend and how they spend it. To make it even better, there are tax benefits available for employees.

The CM is a new concept that supplies a defined package of care for a fixed monthly fee.

This package covers routine care — checkups, stitches, prescriptions, nutrition, etc. — as opposed to specialized care such as heart surgery and other major health issue services.

Dr. Josh Umbehr has been making the media rounds explaining how the CM model works and how it can be cost effective compared to typical group plans. Basically, you pay the doctor a direct fee per month, and thus eliminate the insurance company from the process, which lowers the cost tremendously. The doctor can supply prescription drugs (in most states) and do normal tests in their office at again a tremendous discount because the direct costs are much lower compared to insurance company rates.

Dr. Umbehr’s monthly fees range from $20 to $100, depending on age. You have one fee, no co-pays and no red tape from the insurance company, with discounts up to 80% from standard insurance costs.

And you get to name and keep your current doctor!

To review, HRAs and CMs make programs more user friendly, much cheaper and transparent with less red tape. Most normal healthcare needs are covered at modest cost, with a catastrophic policy to cover the balance. What is not to like?

If you can find an HRA, CM or comparable service to provide healthcare coverage to your employees, you will have a list of qualified workers waiting in line to work for your company. Not only do they get great healthcare, their take home pay goes up in the process. ET
