t’s that time when many of us set resolutions for the New Year only to see them fall by the wayside months, weeks or even days later. The most common downfall of resolutions derives from impatience when results fail to come quickly enough; unrealistic goals from the outset; or an inability to adapt needed changes to the realities of daily life.

Successful resolutions, whether personal or professional, call for a firm commitment toward an achievable goal; a large degree of willpower; and a plan to meet a specific objective(s). They also require a means to measure success (with target dates, if applicable), as well as a method to hold yourself accountable.

Of course, resolutions need not be

set only on January 1, and not all must be measurable in pounds lost or dollars gained. Often, the best “resolutions” are those set with personal and/or professional growth in mind. Here are my top picks for the construction industry in 2016:

RESOLUTION #1: TAKE TIME FOR TRAINING For construction contractors, training can take on many forms — management, equipment, technology, safety, regulatory, etc. The key is to encourage and provide training of various types whenever and wherever possible. Developing and retaining a skilled workforce is imperative in this era of aging baby boomers and labor shortages.

RESOLUTION #2: GET EDUCATED The construction industry has seen dramatic advances in design and technology over the past decade. It’s critical to stay abreast of equipment- and technology-related trends that may influence your company’s competitiveness in future. And with OSHA looking to boost fines in 2016 by 80+% in some cases, it’s essential to stay on top of regulatory changes to maintain compliance on your jobsites.

RESOLUTION #3: KEEP THOSE AROUND YOU SAFE While safety falls under OSHA’s purview, it is also a mindset that must be promulgated from the top down of any organization.

Do more than put a safety program on paper. Promote “safety first” at all times, and provide the tools needed to ensure your people return home safely each night.

RESOLUTION #4: CLEAR OUT THE CLUTTER Whether it’s in your equipment yard or in your office, it pays to do a periodic purge of outdated equipment, materials and systems that no longer work or provide value to your operation. This will open the path to new methods and tools that can enhance efficiency and productivity.

RESOLUTION #5: BE OPEN TO NEW IDEAS AND OPPORTUNITIES Those working in the trenches — figuratively and literally — are often your best sources of ideas and suggestions. Resolve to solicit their input on a regular basis.

In addition, be open to new opportunities, whether it’s taking on a new type of project or piece of equipment, expanding outside your market territory or partnering with another firm to tackle a big project. But be sure to do your homework first so you don’t get caught short.

RESOLUTION #6: TAKE TIME OUT FOR WHAT MATTERS MOST

Night-Lite NL5000 Light Tower The compact Night-Lite NL5000 60-Hz light tower includes Allmand’s 1,250-watt metal halide light system and a vertical manual winch tower deployed from the rear to keep the operator away from the tower cables. GET CONVENTIONAL H to Cut Fuel Costs While hybrids get all the hype, advanced drivelines and hydraulic system innovations in traditional earthmovers yield major efficiency gains.

ybrids have dominated press coverage, but conventional earthmoving equipment has also witnessed advancements that maximize fuel savings.

Fuel efficiency is about more than gallons burned per hour.

“The real measure of fuel efficiency is a combination of yards per gallon and yards per hour,” says Brad Stemper, solutions marketing manager, Case Construction Equipment.

Current earthmoving equipment cuts fuel consumption across the board. “Fuel efficiency gains of 5% to 20% are common and easily obtained,” says Jason Hurdis, senior market professional, Caterpillar.

No single technology is driving these gains. “They all play important and interrelated roles,” says Hurdis. “Load sense hydraulic systems were a big milestone.

Advanced powertrains are another game changer. Eco Mode systems providing the same production levels with less fuel burn per production unit are the latest contributors. But other technologies such as grade control and payload control systems are vital for overall fuel efficiency achievement, as well.”

Caterpillar has invested in numerous fuel-saving technologies, including Eco Mode settings, Idle Management systems, payload systems and grade control systems.

Likewise, John Deere implemented many fuel-saving technology advancements.

“Some examples are autonomous features such as lock-up torque converters, auto idle, auto shutdown, ECO modes or features that group multiple functions into one, like Driveline Assist on Deere’s articulated dump trucks (ADTs),” says Craig Timmerman, product marketing manager, engines and drivetrains, John Deere Construction & Forestry. “The efficiency gains achieved range from just a few percent to as much as 15%.”

New driveline technology takes advantage of the strengths and efficiencies of both hydrostatic and mechanical drives.

For instance, Liebherr XPower Tier 4 Final large wheel loaders feature a power-split driveline. It combines a hydrostatic and a mechanical drive into one system. “Hydrostatic

drive is the most efficient at going slow into the pile and mechanical drive for going fast uphill,” notes Mark Walcher, product manager, wheel loaders, Liebherr-Werk Bischofshofen GmBH. “[The power-split driveline] means the power of the engine is going in two paths, so there is less stress on the transmission, which increases its life significantly.”

Power supplied by the diesel engine is split via a planetary gearbox to a hydrostatic branch and a mechanical branch. The two branches are then combined again so that full performance is available. During operation, the ratio between the two branches is variably adjusted.

There is a higher hydrostatic portion when starting and loading, and a higher mechanical portion at higher speeds.

Together, the two branches deliver 100% of the power delivered by the diesel engine; only the proportion changes.

The gearbox has two operating ranges. The first goes up to approximately 6 mph and the second up to the final speed of 25 mph. At the top of each range, 100% of the power and torque is transferred through the mechanical branch.

The transmission gearbox manages the interaction of the two drive types, adjusting between drives based on the application. “It is adjustable and continuously adapts the mixing ratio of the two drive paths without noticeable switching and without interrupting traction power,” says Martin Gschwend, managing director, sales, LiebherrWerk Bischofshofen GmBH. “Liebherr Power Efficiency [software] coordinates the engine and transmission so we are able to get much more fuel efficiency. Our comparative tests have shown that XPower wheel loaders require up to 30% less fuel that conventionally driven wheel loaders.”

Caterpillar recently added a continuously variable transmission (CVT) to the 966 and 972 wheel loaders that combines mechanical and hydrostatic systems. The XE version of the 966K loader with CVT provides up to a 25% improvement in the number of tons of material moved per unit of fuel.

ELECTRONIC ENGINES ENABLE SOLUTIONS Electronic engines make much of the fuel-saving technology feasible. “Electronically controlled engines have three roles when it comes to increasing fuel and fluid efficiency,” says Craig Timmerman, John Deere. “The first is to control critical engine functions such as fuel quantity, injection timing, air-to-fuel ratio, multiple fuel injections, amount of cooled EGR and a host of other control parameters to deliver peak fuel economy and engine performance. The second is to enable the engine to communicate with other vehicle subsystems and enable an overall more efficient solution.”

The third is to enable communication with customers via telematics solutions. “These systems allow our customers to improve fuel efficiency by monitoring machine health, maximizing equipment utilization and monitoring machine performance,” says Timmerman.

Electronic engines dramatically increase fuel metering precision compared to prior mechanical control systems. “Advanced electronics on the engines were the missing link in my opinion,” says Jason Hurdis, Caterpillar. “The electronic architecture of our engines and integration increased our fuel efficiency by over 5% on the engine alone.”

Electronic engine controls have also led to greater use of selectable power modes. “The machine delivers only as much power as needed to conserve fuel,” says Brad Stemper, Case Construction Equipment. “An economy power mode on a wheel loader, for example, works well in short cycles. Maximum power is better for longer cycles where acceleration is a priority. The end result of this flexibility is a good balance between maximum productivity and fuel efficiency.” automatically balances hydraulic loads with desired machine performance.”

According to Timmerman, there are a number of hydraulic system technologies being incorporated into John Deere machines. “Examples include electronically controlled, variable-displacement pumps, valves designed to minimize pressure drop and variable-displacement motors,” he points out. “In addition to component advancements, there are many examples of system developments that improve efficiency. Grade control is one that is rapidly evolving on dozers, graders and excavators.

CUSTOMERS REALIZE SAVINGS The fuel savings manufacturers promote aren’t just lip surface.

Customers are seeing it in real-world applications. Just ask Shane Madsen, owner of Sierra Materials, who discovered firsthand the efficiencies the Caterpillar continuously variable transmission (CVT) offers.

“Our 966H [wheel loaders] are up around 4 to 4.5 gal. per hour. If you’ve really got your foot in the throttle — pushing them hard loading trucks — you can get them up to 5 gal. per hour,” he notes. “The new [966K XE] burns 2.5 to 2.7 gal. an hour; the worst we’ve seen in about 2.8 gal. per hour. When fuel prices were really high, you could make a pretty good chunk of your payment in just fuel savings.”

Sierra Materials crushes concrete and asphalt and re-markets it as various grades of construction materials. The 966K XE has worked in the yard for a year alongside two 966H loaders and a 5-yd. competitive model.

Each of the machines works about 200 hours per month, and with fuel savings averaging 1.75 gal. per hour compared to the older machines, Madsen figures the new loader saves more than $1,000 per month at today’s fuel prices.

Jeff Guisewite Inc., Mt. Carmel, IL, has also seen significant savings with its Hyundai HX300WT hydraulic excavator, purchased in July for the company’s excavating and demolition operations.

The company performs approximately 60% demolition and 40% excavation work, and currently runs three excavators. “At the end of the day we normally burn about 100 gal.,” says Derek Guisewite. But he has seen a noticeable improvement with the HX300WT. “That machine runs between 80 and 90 gal., so it averages out to about 15% better. That is quite a bit of savings over a year’s time.”

Different mode settings offer further opportunity to save fuel. “We leave it on Power mode most of the time,” says Guisewite. But there are applications where running hydraulics at maximum performance burns unnecessary fuel. “If we are loading brush or loading a house we just tore down, we will put it on Economy mode because you are not really using hydraulics to their maximum pressure.”

Of course, fuel economy is about more than simply burning less fuel. The Hyundai also runs a 2.65-yd. bucket, while a competitive machine was running a 2.2-yd. bucket. “You are moving more dirt plus you are saving more fuel,” says Guisewite.

Each of Sierra Materials’ loaders works about 200 hours per month. With fuel savings averaging 1.75 gal. per hour, Shane Madsen, owner, figures its new 966K with CVT saves more than $1,000 per month at today’s fuel prices.

overall fuel efficiency improvement of up to 10% compared to the 9A Series models.

Intelligent Power Control (IPC) automatically analyzes operator control patterns and adjusts flow and engine rpm for optimum performance and fuel savings. An 8-in. touchscreen cluster provides access to operator settable functions, including variable power modes and attachment flow and relief pressures. The variable power modes

include Power (P), Standard (S) and Efficiency (E) modes for optimum engine to pump output in different applications. The monitor also provides critical machine operating and fuel consumption data.

SYSTEMS INTEGRATION DRIVES EFFICIENCY Systems integration is a key requirement. “Transmissions, hydraulics, controls, axles, electronic technology and work tools must all be designed as a system for optimized efficiency,” says Hurdis. “Fuel efficiency is only as good as the weakest link in the entire machine.”

“Systems integration is the key to providing good fuel efficiency for our customers,” says Volvo’s Gallant. “Systems integration includes not only the balance between peak efficiencies of the machine components, but also the optimal balance with the customer’s applications and the flexibility to change and run efficiently in many applications.”

Opti-shift in Volvo loaders is one example of the dynamic integration of multiple systems.

“The brake system, torque converter, transmission and engine are all continually adjusted to deliver optimum performance in any application, ranging from short cycle loading to long distance carry/roading applications,” says Gallant.

As machine designs progress, integration offers the greatest opportunity. “Systems integration plays a very large role in improving fuel efficiency as we continue to deliver more efficient construction machines,” says Timmerman. “For example, eco modes on many of our machines are accomplished by the engine rpm and transmission setting adjusting automatically to provide a more efficient total system. Another example is the Powerwise III system on our excavators, where the engine and hydraulic system work together and can provide the operator adjustable modes to meet the need of the application.

“One of the most significant technology contributors is a machine’s communication network,” he continues. “This enables the systems integration to take place. There is no

single solution that will work for all construction machines.

Therefore, enabling the different subsystems to work together in a more efficient manner is key to improving efficiency.”

Consider wheel loader design.

“Today’s wheel loaders are built with a variety of electronic modules to control functionality,” says Stemper. “Computer Area Network (or CAN-bus) technology connects the modules and facilitates back and forth communication. With a CAN-bus, for example, the engine and the transmission are in sync at all times vs. working as independent systems. As such, the transmission, related drivetrain components and engine work together to match the demands of a given mode or application.

As with most OEMs, Case is examining the commercial viability of hybrids. However, the immediate focus is on less obvious hybridization.

“This is the wholesale integration between engine, hydraulics and electronics — providing greater connectivity and interrelated operation of these systems to impact overall efficiency and productivity,” Stemper explains. “Incremental gains will continue as engineers fine tune the connections between these systems, learn how to capture and reuse more of the force and power the machine already exerts, and continue to focus on the balance of meeting emissions standards while providing the machine operator greater capabilities.”

“Moving forward, we will continue to see incremental gains in conventional machines as they fill the needs of the dominant market in the near term. Customers in these markets continue to ask for further improvements so they too can lower their cost of operation,” says Timmerman. “As for hybrid technology, the markets for these machines will continue to open up in the future.”

“We believe that hybrid machines are an important step forward, as are the technologies in alternate fuels and alternate power machines (such as electric machines),” says Gallant.

“However, I also believe that conventional machines will continue to exist in conjunction with these new technologies and we need to continue to innovate to achieve even greater machine efficiencies.” ET

State of the Construction Industry

Industry economists share their insights on what lies ahead for general building trends and labor and material costs over the next 12 months.

T

he construction industry saw plenty of opportunity and its share of challenges in 2015. In the first of a two-part series on the state of the construction industry, we asked leading industry economists to comment on the market potential for general construction, as well as ongoing trends in labor and material cost inputs likely to affect the cost of building in the months to come.

Next issue, these and other industry authorities will hone in on the transportation construction sector, with a specific focus on the effects the industry may see from passage of the first long-term highway bill in nearly a decade.

BUILDING CONSTRUCTION CONSTRUCTION IN BOTH COMMERCIAL BUILDING AND SINGLE-AND MULTIFAMILY HOUSING CONTINUED TO GAIN MOMENTUM IN 2015. WHAT WERE THE BIGGEST DRIVERS IN THESE MARKETS AND DO YOU SEE THE TREND CONTINUING IN 2016?

ANIRBAN BASU, chief economist, Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC): The economy

continues to be led by consumer spending growth. That should translate into ongoing momentum in commercial construction, including fulfillment centers attached to online enterprises.

The multifamily boom should last another year given still low apartment vacancy rates in many

markets. Condominium construction should also improve.

DAVID CROWE, chief economist, Economics and Housing Policy, National Association of Home Builders (NAHB): The

housing market is being driven by the improving labor market. Adding jobs is particularly important to young adults on the verge of forming their own households.

We have seen household formations pick up substantially beginning in the fourth quarter 2014 and extending into 2015.

The uptick has been anticipated since household formations fell well below expected levels and stayed there for more than four years. The slow growth in newly formed, primarily millennial generation households required more apartments to accommodate their arrival. As the expected increase chooses rental over owning, multifamily production remains and will remain above historic trends.

Single-family construction, on the other hand, has moved slowly toward its former levels as most new household formations are renting and many existing

homeowners are not moving. On the positive front, single-family construction has doubled from its nadir in Spring 2009, but is barely halfway back to a stable level of 1.3 million units per year, the level last achieved in the early 2000s...

Most of the trends and forces that have slowed the housing recovery are gradually disappearing. More households are being formed; more jobs are being created; home equity is increasing; and confidence is coming back. The next year looks particularly strong for all these reasons.

The pent-up demand for a new home and the arrival of first-time home buyers should push us forward.

Housing starts are expected to increase by 136,000 to 1.26 million in 2016, the best year since 2007 and in line with the absolute increases we last experienced in 2012 and 2013.

ED SULLIVAN, group vice president and chief economist, Portland Cement Association (PCA): We will continue to

experience an increase in the multi-family construction market. The recent recession caused

home values to crash, lost credit ratings and tighter lending policies. Now, there are more jobs but still not the credit many potential single-family home buyers need. Add to this college graduates with large debt loads and baby boomers looking to downsize and all signs point to a strong multi-family market.

I believe we will also see a continued uptick in commercial building construction. Office construction is linked directly to ROI. With employment and spending on the rise along with property values, look for last year’s 10% increase in commercial construction to carry over this year.

KEN SIMONSON, chief economist, Associated General Contractors of America (AGC): As

of early December, the Census Bureau has issued spending estimates through October. They show that in the first 10 months of 2015, multifamily construction jumped by 25% from the same period a year earlier, while homebuilding climbed 14%.

Those growth rates are likely to slow down in 2016 but remain quite healthy, with multifamily increasing another 10% or more and single-family tacking on another 5% to 10%.

With 200,000 more workers bringing home paychecks each month, more people can afford to rent, if not own. Millennials still show a preference for living in cities, or their high student debt disqualifies them from taking out mortgages. These factors will continue to support faster growth of multifamily and rental housing than single-family homebuilding.

JEANNINE CATALDI, IHS: In 2015, the residential market has largely been driven by spending on construction of multifamily units,

although single-family construction has been gaining in strength.

Drivers of growth in the multifamily market continue to be related to pent-up demand from the recession, as well as a new generation of households that seems to be wary of actual home buying and is content to rent. Growing levels of student debt continue to prevent many households from meeting stricter lending criteria, especially in terms of debt to income ratios, while others want to maintain a degree of mobility. These factors are increasing the demand for multi-family rental units.

Looking ahead, construction spending in 2016 will moderate in the multifamily segment as supply begins to align with demand. Single-family construction is expected to be stronger in 2016 as economic conditions continue to improve, allowing for more households to look into the possibility of buying homes.

Housing starts are expected to grow at a stronger pace in 2016 than in 2015.

In the commercial segment, growth has been slowing in recent months. Growth for 2015 will be healthy but below that seen in 2014. The outlook for 2016 calls for spending on commercial construction to continue at a more moderate pace. There is some impact to business from the strong dollar and moderate global growth expectations.

In 2016, the strongest growth is expected in the office and warehouse segments, with both being driven by employment, income and consumer confidence gains that benefit from improving economic conditions.

Warehouse construction is also being driven by the increasing share of e-commerce retail sales, creating a greater need for distribution centers.

EMPLOYMENT SEGMENTS OF THE CONSTRUCTION MARKET IN 2015 EXPERIENCED CHALLENGES FINDING BOTH SKILLED AND UNSKILLED WORKERS. DO YOU EXPECT THE LABOR SHORTAGE TO CONTINUE IN 2016? WHAT CAN THE INDUSTRY DO TO ALLEVIATE ANY ANTICIPATED SHORTAGES? AGC: In a survey the AGC released in September 2015, 86% of the 1,358 respondents said their firms were having trouble filling hourly craft and/or

salaried positions. Those difficulties seem sure to continue as the backlog of projects remains high and the pool of unemployed, experienced construction workers shrivels to 10- or 15-year lows.

Contractors have been teaming more with school districts and community colleges. And the word is slowly spreading that construction pays well and involves working not just with shovels but cool tools like lasers, drones and 3D printers in some cases.

PCA: In 2016, there will be 2.5 to 3 million jobs created.

The downturn put 2.3 million construction workers out of work and 500,000 of those, mostly Hispanics, never returned to the job market. There will be shortages, primarily in the single-family home construction market. In fact, we project that 75,000 startups won’t occur because of the lack of skilled workers alone.

The labor shortages will be regional in nature and some will be offset by finding workers from nearby states where the economy may not be as strong.

Still, lack of labor will continue to plague the industry for the next five years. There needs to be a change in sentiment about the value associated with getting an education in the trades, and that unfortunately will take a while.

ABC: Construction employment growth remains constrained by a lack of human capital availability. That situation will continue in 2016, which among other things will translate into faster wage growth. The dislocation of many workers in the U.S. energy production and distribution sectors helps free up talent, but only in certain parts of the country.

NAHB: Builders are reporting difficulty finding qualified workers and this problem is likely to continue into 2016. However, there are a number of efforts underway to address the issue.

NAHB research has found that the typical wage rate for residential workers is greater than

general wage rates, but that the differential above the general wage rate has fallen. From a basic economic perspective, wages are and will have to continue to rise to attract new workers.

A census report found that only 40% of the construction workers laid off in the collapse returned to the industry. An almost equal share (35%) found a job in another sector. The remaining one-quarter are still unemployed. Attracting and perhaps retaining the unemployed is another source.

Homebuilding organizations are also working with local school districts to re-establish vocational training, as well as conducting classes on their own. NAHB’s education arm, the Home Builders’ Institute, is upping its focus on departing military veterans to address two issues at the same time.

Kristin Reynolds, IHS: The unemployment rate for the construction and extraction occupations in 2015 has averaged 8.5% through October, a dramatic improvement from a high of more than 20% during the comparable period in 2010. In fact, on a not seasonally adjusted basis, this rate has declined relative to a year ago for 64 straight months (since July 2010). This subsector of the workforce averaged 8.3% unemployment during 2001-2005.

In addition, the minimum average unemployment rate for any 12-month period between 2001 and 2015 (excluding the outlier of 2006) is 7.6%, suggesting that the construction and extraction labor market is heading toward full employment as 2016 approaches.

Average hourly earnings for employees of residential building establishments have been rising steadily compared to a year earlier since the beginning of 2012.

The production and non-supervisory subset represents about two-thirds of all employees at residential building establishments. Their average hourly earnings continued to expand in 2015, but at a slower pace than the prior two years. Year-to-date through October, supervisory

employees saw wage gains more than 2.5 times as fast as nonsupervisory employees.

Specialty contractors that build the exterior of a building have seen average hourly wages increase across the board through October 2015 after no change in the year-earlier period. Building equipment contractors that do plumbing and electrical work and site preparation contractors have seen consistent hourly wage gains over the past two years.

Average hourly wage growth for building finishing (drywall, paint, flooring) and finished carpentry workers has been less consistent.

RAW MATERIAL COSTS HOW DID THE UPTICK IN 2015 CONSTRUCTION IMPACT THE COST OF RAW MATERIALS? DO YOU SEE THIS CONTINUING IN 2016?

NAHB: Construction material prices have generally remained calm during 2015, as compared to 2013 and 2014 when the supply industries were struggling to re-open and expand after so many years of near-historic low levels of housing production.

Material prices, especially those influenced by commodity prices, have benefited from the slowing international economy, particularly China. While reduced exports are a negative result of the weak international economy, the slow or no growth in foreign demand has helped keep most construction material prices from rising.

The relatively slow housing recovery pace has also allowed the supply chain to catch up and keep supply availability relatively stable. Europe, China and developing countries are struggling to come back, so this influence should continue through at least the first half of 2016.

AGC: There were huge drops in the cost of petroleum and metals products in 2015. Even gypsum prices edged down after taking their traditional January jump. But concrete and glass had unaccustomed spikes.

In 2016, there may be

further modest declines in the prices of steel, copper, aluminum and diesel fuel. Other materials that are more specific to construction may have small to medium price increases. But materials costs will again be far down the list of contractors’ worries, unlike labor costs and availability.

DENI KOENHEMSI, IHS: The construction uptick in the U.S. did not impact the cost of most building materials in 2015. Raw materials such as lumber and steel lost their value due to abundant supply and relatively weak global demand.

Although construction activity picked up in the United States, it slowed in emerging market economies such as China, which has been a big consumer of raw commodities. Rising cement prices were an exception to the general trend of lower inflation. This was partly due to production constraints following the Great Recession and varying regional demand for a commodity that is known to be costly to transport.

This year, building material prices will begin to slowly rise as demand in the U.S. continues to escalate. However, IHS does not expect a sharp reversal of this low price environment as supply remains healthy and global demand is not expected to rise significantly for most building materials.

ABC: Despite the fact that America is well into its seventh year of economic recovery and ongoing expansion of nonresidential and residential construction spending, materials prices have fallen over the past year.

Whether in the form of copper, oil, natural gas or steel prices, inputs into construction have become cheaper.

Much of this has to do with the fact that key emerging nations are in recession (e.g., Brazil, Russia) and that Chinese growth rates are at multi-decade lows. A number of these emerging nations will continue to struggle economically in 2016.

Moreover, a strengthening dollar is helping to keep a firm lid on materials prices. ET

The Caldwell Group partnered with Certex Lifting Products to engineer and manufacture a lifting system to support the U.S. Navy’s Triton MQ-4C drone development. Certex was awarded the project in late 2014 and partnered with Caldwell due to its Dura-Lite Composite Lifting and Spreader Beam product line. The Anechoic Chamber required a material that would not interfere with the electromagnetic testing. The composite materials used in the Dura-Lite products offered several advantages, including light weight and non-conductive, non-corrosive properties.

Caldwell manufactured the main lifting beam, spreader beams and wing cradles. Certex provided shackles and manufactured the slings for the lifting system. All subassemblies were tested at Caldwell’s 84,000-sq.-ft. manufacturing facility in Rockford, IL, and then shipped to Patuxent River for use.

The system installation and initial testing took place in August 2015. “It was very exciting to be on site for the initial lift and an honor to support the U.S. Navy in this project,” says Dan Mongan, Caldwell product development specialist and lead designer of the Dura-Lite product line.

What to Know with One Year to Go Now is the time to learn how the new oils will affect your equipment.

Modern heavy equipment engines require new oils to be more resistant to oxidation. PC-11 oils will be formulated to address this requirement.

A

nyone who manages a construction fleet should be aware of the Proposed Category 11 (PC-11) next generation heavy-duty diesel engine oils. Recently, the ASTM Heavy Duty Engine Oil Classification Panel (HDEOCP) approved the PC-11 specifications. The American Petroleum Institute (API) is expected to approve it in the coming weeks.

So what does that mean, and how does it affect the construction industry?

Oil specifications have to be established one year prior to the oils being commercially available. The recent specification

approval means the new engine oil category is keeping pace with the deadline set by engine manufacturers to have the oils available in late 2016 for use with 2017 model year vehicles and equipment.

What comes next is the commercialization period, according to Shawn Whitacre, head of the ASTM panel and senior staff engineer at Chevron. The commercialization period includes

time for the oil manufacturers and their additive partners to complete product testing and begin product transitions for licensure in December 2016.

TWO SPECS IN ONE Unlike new oil categories in the past, PC-11 will be split into two subcategories: API CK-4 and API FA-4.

“The split specification concept allows for this new category to be broadly applicable for use in a wide variety of heavyduty diesel engines, regardless of whether those engines are used in on-highway trucks or in offhighway equipment,” Whitacre explains.

The subcategory CK-4 builds on the previous API CJ-4 category. CK-4 oils will offer improved oxidation stability, aeration control and resistance to viscosity loss by shear, Whitacre says.

CK-4 oils will be approved for use in many of the same engines and applications that currently recommend CJ-4. It will be available in the same viscosity grades consumers are using today and will be backwards compatible with CJ-4 oils.

The API FA-4 subcategory will adopt the same performance requirements as CK-4 oils, but will be at a lower viscosity level compared to today’s oils. These thinner oils can offer more optimized fuel economy for newer engines designed to use lower viscosity oils.

“Like with other low viscosity oils, we don’t expect that engine makers will allow these oils across the board,” Whitacre says. “OEMs are still working on their own engine test

programs to determine to what extent the new FA-4 oils can be recommended, if at all. This is something that we’ll be watching closely in the coming months as these positions become clearer.”

While off-highway applications will be limited, Whitacre indicates contractors with Class 8 on-road vehicles and mediumduty or diesel pickup trucks may see a use for FA-4 oils.

EFFECTS ON COMPONENT LIFE A major priority for PC-11 oils was the ability to stand up to elevated temperatures for longer periods of time without breaking down. Modern engines are placing greater demands on engine oils, and engine makers continue to push for longer oil change intervals, requiring the new oils to be more resistant to oxidation, says Whitacre.

PC-11 oils will provide consumers with the latest advancements in wear protection and viscosity control.

Continuing to use oils that do not meet the requirements of today’s engines may compromise the ability to achieve maximum OEM-published oil drain intervals, Whitacre states.

While it’s not recommended to continue using CJ-4 oils in new engines starting with the 2017 models, using new CK-4 oils in older engines is possible. CK-4 oils will be backwards compatible to the previous API categories and will have no adverse effect in older equipment, says Whitacre. However, he cautions that you should check OEM recommendations for viscosity grades.

standpoint, the FA-4 subcategory is not backwards compatible.

“The older category had a viscosity limit that excludes the range that the new category encompasses, so you can’t meet that new FA-4 spec and claim the older spec because the viscosity ranges are mutually exclusive,” Whitacre points out.

WHAT’S NEXT It’s been 10 years since the last new engine oil category was introduced. While the industry was averaging a new oil category nearly every four years prior to that, Whitacre believes the CK-4 and FA-4 oils will be relevant for a while, with no new oil category currently on the horizon.

However, improvements in technology and continuing greenhouse gas regulations may ripple into the oils and lubricant market. It’s too hard to speculate at this point, but new developments in an ever-changing industry may trigger discussions on the next engine oil category.

In the meantime, 2016 will be a busy year for oil and additive manufacturers as the industry enters the home stretch for PC-11. Contractors can spend this time preparing for the new oils’ debut.

Whitacre stresses the importance of educating yourself on the changes and how they will affect your operations. Work with equipment suppliers to make sure you understand and are following OEM recommendations for use of the new oils.

And identify which viscosity grades and API specs are allowable for each piece of equipment in your fleet. ET

A LOST OPPORTUNITY in Technology Spending A new survey reveals common themes when it comes to IT investment.

O

ver a third of U.S. contractors responding to JBKnowledge’s 2015 Construction Technology survey spend less than 1% of corporate revenue (fees the corporation bills to projects as either profit or overhead charges) on information technology (IT).

More than half spend 2% or less.

Those numbers confirm a 2014 Gartner survey’s findings, which measured an average IT spend across 19 industries of 3.5% of revenues. The 4th Annual JBKnowledge Construction Technology Report indicates: “Out of 19 industries, construction allocates the least amount of revenue for technology, according to Gartner. This means the construction industry under spends cross-industry averages by 60% to 70%.”

SHORT ON STAFF The 2015 report indicates only 42% of constructors have a dedicated IT staff.

JBKnowledge, a company that builds technology solutions for construction and insurance, and produces the Construction Technology Report. “It means that technology is so unimportant to most contractors that they’re not even assigning a single person to be responsible for it.”

Gartner’s research identified construction as the third most likely industry to outsource IT, outsourcing 16% of IT spending. According to the Construction Technology Report, “This suggests that many construction companies are running IT with a combination of ‘unofficial’ staff and advising third-party vendors.”

The profile of respondents in the 2015 Construction Technology Report is dominated by commercial building constructors (66%); the second-largest vocation represented is transportation construction (23%). It includes more large firms than the U.S. construction industry in general.

Less than 10% of respondents report annual sales volume

up to $5 million, while most U.S. heavy construction firms fit this category. An outsized 46% of respondents had annual sales between $20 million and $200 million. Conventional wisdom that larger companies see the value in investing in management tools doesn’t yet apply to construction technology.

“Logically, as companies get larger, they tend to have technology staffs,” says Benham. “But I was surprised at how large some [construction] companies get without having a single person dedicated to technology.”

About a quarter of contractors with fewer than 100 employees had IT staff, and just over half with 100 to 200 employees hire IT professionals. Similarly, about 25% of contractors with annual sales volume less than $50 million employed IT staff, and a little more than half with $51 million to $100 million in sales employed IT professionals.

Of those that do have IT staff, regardless of size, 63% commit to five or fewer. Only companies with more than 1,000 employees and $500+ million in sales volume are likely to have more than five employees dedicated to IT, and the IT staff is likely to be less than 15 employees.

“Almost 20% of survey respondents base the size of their IT staff on workload — in other words, how stressed out the IT staff is,” says Benham.

There is a better way to determine the size of an IT department. “Construction companies need to take a proactive, strategy-based approach, setting budgets based on what tools, processes and people are necessary to fulfill the company’s core strategic objectives.”

LIMITING FACTORS The 2015 survey identified the Top 5 factors that limit adoption of technology: ˜˜ Budget: 39% ˜˜ Lack of support staff: 34% ˜˜ Management hesitance: 31% ˜˜ Lack of knowledge about what’s available: 28%

“At the end of the day, the top technology limiters all come back to money,” says Benham.

“Contractors don’t have the budget or they don’t have the staff to thoroughly investigate available technology. They consume the meager resources they do set aside for IT responding to emergencies like fixing computers.”

The analysis published in the Construction Technology Report suggests, “These statistics show that construction companies are lacking in structure, staff and budget for information technology, and most of them are aware of it. Employees filling unofficial roles in IT are Band-Aids on resource gaps, but they’re not fully trained and equipped IT professionals.”

Evidence in the report underscores a lack of expertise: ˜˜ persistent use of spreadsheets in tasks such as collecting field data and estimating; ˜˜ very low rates of integration in software systems that share data; and ˜˜ dependence on manual rekeying or using spreadsheets to transfer data when programs are not integrated.

“In general, these statistics indicate that companies do not have a clear and communicated strategy when budgeting for IT. Therefore, needs and allocated resources do not align,” states the report. “Most builders have a set mission and objectives within their space as far as the projects, clients and employees they seek and maintain.” Yet, most do not give technology a detailed role in fulfilling that mission.

Opportunity to gain a competitive advantage can be realized by adding enough technology expertise to identify technologies that improve company operations in the direction of achieving corporate goals.

BUCKETS & BEYOND Attachments let telehandlers do more than lift and place materials.

C

ontractors routinely use rough-terrain telehandlers to lift loads to height, usually when ground conditions are less than ideal. But manufacturers have also built these machines with the ability to swap out the traditional forks for a variety of attachments — including buckets and brooms, work platforms and carriages, as well as other specialized attachments — enhancing their versatility and transforming them beyond a lift and place machine.

“Telehandlers are very versatile machines,” says Brian Boeckman, global product director for telehandlers, JLG Industries. “In many cases, telehandlers can take the place of multiple machines by simply changing the attachment. Contractors can save money and make more efficient use of their time when they maximize the versatility of the telehandler in this manner.”

“We offer a large range of attachments, enabling contractors to customize their equipment to specific applications, which helps to improve productivity and safety on a jobsite,” notes Don Ahern, owner, Xtreme Manufacturing. “It can also reduce the need to have multiple pieces of equipment.”

Brent Coffey, loader product manager,

Wacker Neuson, describes the telehandler as “three machines in one.” “It’s a telehandler, skid steer and wheel loader… multiple machines in one footprint,” he says. “From a cost perspective, your ROI with a telehandler is very high because you don’t have to buy multiple machines.”

Because of its versatility, a telehandler is often the first machine on a jobsite and the last to leave, notes Anders Mantere, telehandler product manager, Genie. This is especially true with smaller models.

“Our smallest telehandler is such a universal tool,” says Mantere. “Since it is rough terrain capable, you’ll see it on jobsites early on off loading trucks. And because it can utilize so many attachments, it can be used

during the course of the entire project from beginning to end for so many tasks — lifting materials, moving loads, running skidsteer attachments such as brushes, brooms, etc.

“The machine’s versatile attachment capability also gives customers a way to keep it busier for longer periods of time and in more applications, all while leveraging the investment in attachments across a machine fleet,” he adds.

DESIGNED-IN VERSATILITY From the start, telehandlers have proven versatile, but engineering advancements continue to up the ante.

For example, JLG now uses a common boom head among its telehandler brands.

“This allows customers to increase the efficiency of their fleet by allowing them to utilize a single attachment on multiple brands and models,” says Boeckman. The company also offers over 24 different attachments and a variety of forks, fork extenXtreme sions and accessories.

Some of the more commonly used attachments include standard tilt carriages, as well as buckets, side tilt carriages, truss booms and lifting hooks. “We offer a number of truss booms, truss booms with winches, lifting hooks and material arms, which allow customers to lift suspended loads,” Boeckman adds.

The company also offers a fork-mounted work platform on both JLG and SkyTrak brands. The 4’ x 8’ platform can handle capacities up to 1,000 lbs. and features a side entry swing gate and three lanyard attachment points. Operators can also remove the front rail for applications requiring additional access.

skid-steer attachments. A universal skid-steer adapter also allows use of the full suite of JLG attachments. Standard auxiliary hydraulics to the boom head provide the ability to use attachments such as grapple buckets.

Swing and rotating carriages and buckets are popular with Genie customers. “Buckets are a great accessory for picking up loose materials, including dirt,” says Mantere. He adds that they are intended to move piles of dirt rather than ground engage into heavy, compacted soil.

A standardized quickattach system in three sizes for small, mid-size and large telehandlers offers contractors the ability to minimize their attachment investment. “Now they can share attachments between all models in the lineup,” says Mantere. Standardized auxiliary hydraulics also make it easier for rental companies to accommodate varying specifications of machines that may move cross country.

Genie has added a lift shackle underneath its quick attach that allows contractors to sling a load. “We chose to put it underneath the boom tip to give operators as much flexibility as possible,” says Mantere. “It allows an operator to remove the carriage completely and essentially have a miniature boom right away without having to bring a second attachment with them.

“We also noticed that when people sling materials, they tend to carry the chains with the machine, typically laying them across the chassis,” he continues. “That can scratch the machine, so we added a rigging tray at the front of the machine. It keeps everything neat and organized and has been a success from a logistics standpoint.”

JLG offers over 24 different attachments and a variety of forks, fork extensions and accessories for its telehandlers.

For example, Xtreme Manufacturing introduced a pipe and pole grapple attachment for its XR4030 that can safely lift poles up to 60 in. in diameter and up to 35,000 lbs. in weight. It also developed a fifth-wheel attachment for a Canadian customer so it could use telehandlers to move and transport loads around jobsites. This replaced the usual method of moving loads on trailers attached to a pickup truck, as well as the need for two workers as spotters. The result was the customer was able to free up 30 crew members for other duties.

“The attachment also reduced trailer sway, improving safety as they were moving the loads,” says Ahern.

Because its telehandlers have roots in Europe’s agriculture industry, Wacker Neuson’s North American offering is designed to cover multiple equipment operations. “The European agriculture industry requires feature-rich machines that do more than lift and place,” says Coffey.

“We designed our machines to be tool carriers, so everything a contractor would want to do with a skid steer or wheel loader they can do with our telehandler.”

A standard skid-steer-style quick attach and continuous-flow hydraulic block — the same one used on its skid steers and wheel loaders — make that possible. “Contractors are wide open to using whatever attachment they would use with a skid steer, and it’s ground engaging because you can dig with it like a wheel loader,” Coffey comments. “Contractors can take a telehandler along with a bucket, forks and broom to complete a job with one machine. They can move material with the bucket, pick up a pallet and lift it to a second or third floor with the forks, then sweep the sidewalk with the continuous-flow broom.”

The telehandlers can be used for snow removal, as well, making them more profitable year round.

“When you have a machine that is designed to operate in the same environment as a skid steer, you can get 12 months of use from it. You can use it to blow, stack and dump snow,” Coffey points out. “Our boom design also absorbs shocks. So if a contractor is moving snow with a blade and clips a manhole cover, for example, the machine is designed to withstand that force.” ET

General Motors’ Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 are introducing

Digital Steering Assist power steering on some Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD double cab and crew cab models helps make hauling and trailering more confident, with electronic controls that enhance road holding and stability on the highway — particularly on crowned roads — regardless of whether the truck is loaded.

Ford is introducing Pro Trailer Backup Assist for the 2016 Ford F-150, a technology that makes the challenge of backing up a trailer easier than ever for both experts and infrequent towers alike.

To operate Pro Trailer Backup Assist, the customer rotates a knob to indicate how much the system should turn the trailer. The technology automatically steers the truck to turn the trailer the desired amount.

electric variable-assist power steering as standard on all models. It reduces steering effort at low speeds. Because there is no enginedriven pump, electric steering also saves fuel and eliminates the maintenance associated with hydraulic power steering.

The light-duty Chevrolet and GMC models also offer a suite of features to simplify towing. They include StabiliTrak electronic stability control, trailer sway control, an integrated trailer brake and hill start assist.

StabiliTrak is standard on all Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500 models. It works in concert with the four-wheel disc brake system and four-channel ABS to provide more precise and controlled ABS stops,

use electric trailer brakes when a trailer is plugged into the standard wiring harness.

Ram 1500 light-duty pickups feature an air suspension system to increase towing capability. The Active-Level Four-Corner Air Suspension offers automatic load leveling and five ride height settings to improve capability and efficiency. Two selectable positions allow the driver maximum clearance control from the dashboard. This smart suspension also automatically lowers the truck at highway speeds to reduce drag.

It also incorporates rollover mitigation technology, which anticipates tip-up conditions, such as fishtailing on a flat road surface and rapidly applies brake pressure to help reduce the likelihood of a rollover.

Trailer sway control is standard and works with StabiliTrak to provide an added measure of confidence when towing a trailer. It senses conditions of trailer sway and, without input from the driver, intervenes with braking and/or reduces engine power to bring the trailer under control and keep it on its intended path. The system will

cruise control, trailer braking, vehicle status and engine performance. A “roller menu” provides access via a toggle on the steering wheel. The display allows you to customize vehicle information to your needs.

Ram trucks also utilize the latest camera technology. A rear camera off the tailgate allows for easy TAG connection. The available ParkView Rear Back-Up Camera provides a clear view out back in the rearview mirror. When equipped with the 5- or 8.4-in. Uconnect multi-media center, the image is displayed on the touchscreen and provides dynamic grid lines to help steer you safely into position.

The integrated trailer brake on Ram 1500s simplifies towing by storing multiple trailers in its memory. This includes brake settings and the miles on the trailer for maintenance tracking.

Standard on every Ram 1500, electronic stability control (ESC) reduces engine power and applies individual brakes as

needed when it senses a loss of traction or control. ESC works with multiple advanced technologies including Ready Alert Braking, All-Speed Traction Control, Hill Start Assist and Trailer Sway Control.

Another technology that makes pulling a trailer a little easier is Hill Start Assist, which automatically stops the vehicle from rolling backward if you take your foot off the brake while stopped on an incline. Hill Start Assist disengages when acceleration resumes.

HEAVY-DUTY TECHNOLOGY With the majority of heavy-duty trucks used for towing, manufacturers have stepped to the plate with technical innovations.

Many of them focus on visibility, which is key to safe towing.

Ford’s larger 2017 Super Duty pickups include new features and up to seven cameras to enhance towing performance. Advanced coaching and camera technology makes conventional and gooseneck/fifth-wheel towing easier and more efficient. The cameras help customers see more angles and monitor conditions around the truck to aide towing.

A center high-mounted stop lamp camera provides visibility into the cargo box, allowing for easier hook-up of gooseneck/ fifth-wheel trailers. A 360° camera system uses four digital, high-definition cameras to give the driver a bird’s-eye view around the truck. Trailer reverse guidance provides visual cues and tips to help with backing a trailer. A factory available camera can be attached to a trailer to improve visibility while backing.

But increased visibility extends beyond camera technology. A Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with trailer tow is optimized for the Super Duty to include the length of the trailer. BLIS uses radar sensors in the tail lamps to monitor areas that may not be visible to the driver.

To keep an eye on trailer tire pressures, the Super Duty pickups offer an in-cab trailer tire pressure monitoring system.

In addition, adaptive steering reduces the amount of steering input needed to change direction at low speed, while reducing sensitivity to steering input at higher speeds. This helps make towing the heaviest loads easier and brings greater ease when navigating jobsites and parking lots — with or without a trailer.

Steering effort was also a focus at General Motors. For 2016, some Chevrolet and GMC HD trucks feature Digital Steering Assist to complement the existing integrated cruise control, powertrain grade braking and diesel exhaust braking. Digital Steering Assist power steering on some double cab and crew cab models offers electronic controls that enhance road holding and stability on the highway (particularly on crowned roads) regardless of whether the truck is loaded. It promises greater responsiveness and an improved steering feel, as well.

The Digital Steering Assist system continuously adjusts the amount of hydraulic assist provided to the driver while steering.

It’s similar in concept to electric power steering, where a continuous and varied amount of steering motor torque is used to assist the driver. However, Digital Steering Assist uses hydraulics as the primary power source.

Compared to a conventional passive hydraulic system, Digital Steering Assist reduces the amount of work and attention the driver exerts to steer and control the truck. As a result, the truck feels more controlled, with stability at higher speeds and on surfaces such as crowned roads. Additional features include: ˜˜ Speed-variable assist — Lighter turning effort at lower speeds provides easier maneuverability in parking lots and heavier effort at higher speeds, enhancing directional control. ˜˜ Returnability assist — This improves the steering wheel return to center after low-speed parking maneuvers. ˜˜ Pull compensation — This feature recognizes when a hydraulic pressure offset is required while driving on a sloped road, reducing the driver’s need for steering input. The truck drives straighter and the driver is less fatigued. ˜˜ Improved Tow/Haul mode efforts — Similar to speed variable assist, when the vehicle is in Tow/Haul mode, less effort is required for parking, making it easier to maneuver a trailer. A heavier effort at higher speeds helps provide a greater feeling of control and stability.

Ram Trucks rises to the occasion with air suspension options on the 2500 and 3500 pickups. A benefit to the air suspension design is the load-leveling capability, which automatically detects load on the rear suspension from a trailer or payload. The air pressure increases until the vehicle reaches normal ride height, leveling the truck and improving stability and loaded ride. On the 2500, an air bag replaces the coil spring, while the 3500 offers a supplemental air bag suspension option.

A Configurable Electronic Vehicle Information Center with an available 7-in. multi-view cluster display provides a selection of trailer towing focused gauges, including trailer brake gain, transmission temperatures and diesel exhaust braking. The main display can also display oil life, fuel filter life, turbocharger boost pressure, tire pressures, engine hours, trailer hours and a range of powertrain data.

The available ParkView Rear Back Up Camera is mounted within the tailgate handle to provide the driver with a clear view of what’s behind the vehicle. The color dashboard display helps simplify parking and trailer hookups. A cargo-view camera, mounted in the center high-mounted stop lamp,

provides a view of the bed for easier fifthwheel or gooseneck trailer hookup, as well as for monitoring bed loads.

The 2016 Ram Heavy Duty pickup allows users to switch the view of the Uconnect 8.4-in. screen from backup camera to cargo view with the touch of the screen. A new bed lighting system uses bright LEDs mounted in the rear corners of the bed for better visibility when working late hours; using the

cargo-view camera; or connecting/disconnecting trailers.

The available dashboard-mounted trailer brake controller on the center console allows the user to automatically or manually operate the electronic brakes on properly equipped trailers. The Uconnect system can store different trailers in memory, including settings for brake controller, miles for maintenance and more.

While key performance characteristics such as horsepower, torque and available gear ratios still dominate towing capability specs, the advent of advanced towing technology also deserves close attention.

These technologies can instill confidence, reduce the driver’s workload and provide an additional measure of safety — all of which are critical when pulling heavy loads. ET

Isn’t that where most contractors head once the cold weather hits?

As long as you’re there and have some time on your hands, you may want to ponder what 2016 will bring for business opportunities and how you are prepared to deal with those opportunities should they develop as you predicted... or do not develop as planned.

Hey, we all know about Murphy’s Law and how it can impact your game plan, budget, timeline, financing availability or whatever, and most of you are pretty good at turning chicken manure into chicken salad.

So it’s safe to assume that if you plan out your year using two or three different scenarios, you’re less likely to be surprised when it hits the fan, and have a good idea what options are available to correct the situation.

When I use the word “situation” or refer

to “results,” let’s be clear that I am talking cash flow, pure and simple, and that is what you should be striving for when doing any type of business planning. This is especially important for contractors because of the many variables you need to deal with in addition to Murphy’s Law. Ever try to figure out how your cash flow works? It can be a very educational experience if you run some calculations for one of your typical jobs. The timing of your disbursements vs. collections, even with bank financing to help out, can get scary if you don’t get the billing out and collect your money.

And just because business is pouring in does not mean you are out from behind the eight-ball, because you are not. Every dollar of sales requires some permanent capital. In short, you can “sell” yourself into bankruptcy if you don’t understand the capital requirements for your type of business.

TOPICS TO PONDER IN 2016 So to help out with your 2016 planning here are some topics to consider: •Check out how you did for 2015 in terms of what you expected and find out why you didn’t get the results you contemplated. Adjust your estimating process for 2016.

•Construction is expected to be strong in 2016, but obviously you know your individual market better than I do. Nonresidential should remain solid but start tailing off in the latter part of the year.

•U.S. firms are expecting to pay workers 2.9% more in 2016 over 2015. With the lack of construction workers in many markets, that pay scale may have to increase.

•In December, the Fed announced plans to raise interest rates, and I suspect that once they start increasing them, they will continue to move up. This will impact the construction industry in general and probably not in a good way. So

if you have any borrowing to do, it may be prudent to do it sooner rather than later.

•Congress also announced passage of the tax extender bill, which approves Sec. 179 expensing for 2015 and beyond at the $500,000 level and reinstating 50% bonus depreciation. These changes may have some benefits for 2015 that you didn’t expect, along with an incentive to buy some new or used equipment to make use of the tax benefits in future.

EQUIPMENT TRENDS Speaking of equipment, I’m hearing that many contractors are reviewing their internal equipment fleets, selling off underutilized units and switching to equipment rental instead of ownership. The American Rental Association rental penetration index continues to climb.

There is software you can use to manage your equipment fleets that basically mirrors rental company reporting in terms of time and dollar utilization. The analysis that rental companies use to decide when to add or reduce units in their fleets should be utilized by contractors to make similar decisions.

The rental market for 2016 should continue to be soft because of the glut of equipment in rental yards. Used equipment values are down and rates are very competitive. This condition will of course correct itself as fleets are downsized, but until that time, contractors should be sitting pretty.

On the other hand, if you have a quality rental house working with you, and it has the equipment you normally need, it may be prudent to work out some pricing for 2016 so that both parties can sleep nights.

In my mind, there is a lot of infrastructure work that needs to be done on the city, state and national level, and sooner or later this work will present itself. We may have to wait until after the election, but it has to come as part of the solution to pick up our economy.

So smear on some more suntan lotion and start figuring how much cash you are going to generate in 2016.
