f you’ve met me recently in person or through this little camera on my laptop, you’ve probably heard me say something along the lines on how exciting it is to be within the concrete industry right now. Despite the economic stresses; despite material shortages and costs; despite finding and retaining skilled labor—the industry is sitting at the apex of JONATHAN KOZLOWSKI, EDITOR change. Both technologically and fundamentally. JKOZLOWSKI@ ACBUSINESSMEDIA.COM Admittedly, that sounds a bit overly dramatic. The standard way of thinking is that the construction industry, let alone the concrete industry, is slow to adopt new technology. And rightfully so. Solutions need to work and data needs to be available to back that up. But solutions like BIM, 3D mapping, and laser scanning, have been in practice long enough that these technologies are now getting to the point that it’s more and more common to need to have them part of the plan instead of a luxury. Contractors are finding a practical use for UAVs (or drones). More robotics are taking the painstaking tasks to allow people to be more productive elsewhere. And innovators are now starting to further develop artificial intelligence to be used as a tool for material producers and plant operators to optimize the mix. Speaking on material producers and the mix, another change is the exponential progression of Type 1L cement. There are plenty of justifiable concerns and questions. Where one project in one area can experience no issues while another only hours away can present a handful of issues. The recent American Society of Concrete Contractors (ASCC) Fall Conference held a Type 1L seminar on just this topic. With the goal of bringing the cement and concrete industry to carbonneutral by 2050, the move towards a Type 1L cement is just the beginning. As Nathan Forrest, P.E. ENV SP, the technical director at California/ Nevada Cement Association, said in his presentation “PLCs are the tip of the iceberg.” For now, the major recommendations from the ASCC include working mockups, consider the weather, know your specs, and bid accordingly. There’s more to it, but—you know—its a good place to start. Whether you’re putting down a new foundation, tilting-up one more concrete panel, or staining that decorative flatwork, please, take a step back (when and where it’s safe to do so) and realize that you are a part of one of the biggest changes in concrete’s history. ConcreteDNA Platform From DEWALT
DEWALT and Converge have teamed up to create products designed to reduce the carbon emissions of concrete. Concrete is the one of the most widely used materials in the world, with global production reaching over 10 billion tons per year. However, the manufacturing process for is highly energyintensive and generates up to an estimated 8% of all man-made carbon emissions. The new design, called edge form bogies, eliminates the need for screed rail, a prerequisite previously required for TyBOT. Trading Expediency for Safety BY BRAD HUMPHREY
A
s contractors, we must protect our workers and we cannot trade expediency of getting jobs done more quickly for the safety hazards that await such trade-offs. I’ve witnessed firsthand many poor decisions, many that were even risking decisions, impacted by the need to be fast in completing projects. The presence and use of what most contractors call the “quickie saw,” has become a normal part of most contractor’s equipment and tool resources. Used by both asphalt and concrete contractors, it is the “quickie saw” that allows a crew to quickly trim off an area or to cut a small square footage of concrete that can then be torn out by the Skid Steer with the appropriate attachment. If this process is performed safely, the use of such a tool is great. However, because so many foremen feel hurried to complete their work, a crew worker will quickly be instructed to grab the “quickie saw” and start cutting. However, most foremen often forget to remind their saw-cutter to wear their PPE, including: • A watering system (directly or manually applied) to help reduce dust from the cutting effort • Face shield and/or face mask to reduce both any flying debris or dust inhalation • Ear plugs to reduce the decibels put off from the saw • Hard hat or helmet to keep any accidental material from hitting the head • Gloves that can prevent material debris from scratching or cutting their hands, wrist, etc. • Long-sleeve shirt that can protect any debris from scraping or cutting their arms • Safety glasses that perhaps is THE MOST critical of PPE I’ve seen the invaluable “quickie-saw,” with a guard properly in place, still send material out the rear and bounce off a curb or other item that finds it way into the eyes of a worker not wearing safety glasses. Hey contractor and construction leader, unless your foreman is especially disciplined to always ensure that their workers are safely prepared, it is only normal to think that they might forego all the proper PPE at the moment of having to use the saw. Our role is to influence them to the point where they instinctively choose safety over expediency. Just think about this point, in less than 60-90 seconds the worker can place all of the needed PPE to safely operate the saw. Isn’t the safety of our workers, no matter how tight the schedule, more important to our long-term success? Here’s to slowing down the decision-making process just a few seconds to strengthen employee safety.
