How to Make Your Employees Feel Valued

T

he labor market is rough right now. Finding good employees is increasingly tough which means it's more important than ever to show the employees you do have, just how much you value them. It doesn't take extravagant gestures to do so either, simple things like communication and acknowledgment of their dedication can go a long way. Studies have shown that valuing employees in the workplace can lead to some fantastic results. Employees who feel valued have increased motivation in the workplace, greater commitment and show greater levels of innovation. Here are three easy things you can start doing today to help your employees feel worthy of their efforts at your company and in their careers.

1. PROVIDE MEANINGFUL WORK Construction jobs are not known for being the most attractive careers out there. Still, there isn't a much better feeling of accomplishment than walking in to a building that you helped wire or driving down a road that you paved. These jobs are meaningful to the communities they serve and the people who use the finished products. Take time to remind your crews that what they are doing matters. Providing meaning will be different for each individual, so it might be helpful to also highlight teams to help others understand the work each group or department does, whether through company e-mails or by talking about achievements during meetings. Look for ways to give meaningful work directly to employees who have expressed the desire for advancement. This can mean little things like providing them the chance to plan an all-company event or giving them the opportunity to participate in training programs that can help crew members better complete and understand their jobs.

8

2. COMMUNICATE CLEARLY & OFTEN Communicating with your crew can be tough when you have several employees spread out over many miles or cities. Still, it's important to keep in touch with your team. While regularly taking time to say hello to employees and check in with them might seem like an unnecessary drain on your productivity, these interactions are valuable points of connection for your employees (and for you). Employees often feel the most valued when spending time directly with a leader or manager outside of normal job responsibilities. Treat them to a coffee break or take them out to lunch to get to know them better and hear their ideas. You'll be surprised at what you learn and how much you enjoy those conversations too. 3. CELEBRATE ACHIEVEMENTS Research shows that most people who quit their jobs cite, “lack of recognition" as their reason for leaving—not boredom, frustration, or to do something new. People will make assumptions about how you view their efforts and you saying nothing doesn’t typically translate in their minds as ‘good job.’ This is why it’s important to keep the positivity and communication flowing. There are numerous ways to show appreciation for both large and small results—a pat on the back, a sincere thank you letter, a small gift, or a monetary bonus. As a business owner, you cannot demand that any employee feels valued. Still, you can provide all of things employees say they want from a leader; a company, and a culture, where they feel valued in their work.

EDC-6 to Impact Asphalt Production Facilities The Federal Highway Administration Every Day Counts initiative adds e-Ticketing to their innovation acceleration program

Gallagher Asphalt, Thornton, IL, uses a paperless process for truck planning, scheduling, e-Ticketing, digital timecards and faster invoicing/payment.

S

ince 2009, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has supported new and better ideas to get highways planned, designed, built and maintained with the Every Day Counts (EDC) program. Now in its sixth cycle, EDC-6 Innovations for 2021-2022 includes several initiatives that FHWA feels will positively impact the industry and electronic ticketing is one of them that will directly impact asphalt plant owners and mix producers. "Highway construction projects produce massive amounts of valuable data. Historically, information such as materials tickets were communicated via paper," FHWA says. "Transportation agencies are improving on these paper processes by integrating them into electronic and digital workflows. Electronic ticketing (e-Ticketing) improves the tracking, exchange, and archiving of materials tickets.” More than a dozen state DOTs, including Minnesota, Delaware and Pennsylvania, currently use e-Ticketing for construction contracts with 43 states committing to trying some form of the technology by 2022. Due to the related safety concerns with COVID-19, State DOTs began to introduce specific e-Ticketing guidelines with a greater sense of urgency. Material producers took many steps to transition their scalehouse operations to e-Ticketing to promote social distancing. These

12

regulations are providing a clear path for contractors to implement an e-Ticketing platform, sooner rather than later. Will your plant be ready to comply? STATES TAKE INITIATIVE Because of its benefits, many states have been piloting e-Ticketing platforms since long before COVID and are seeing the benefits. "The state of Delaware (DelDot) right now has all of their hot mix asphalt producers and plants up and running fully digital," Matthew Valle, VP of Industry Relations at HaulHub, Inc. says. "That's 16 plants in Delaware that are now feeding into Delaware DOT's electronic portal." The benefits of e-ticketing for states include: ➊ Increased safety: Removing the need for on-site ticket collection. ➋ Labor savings: Less paperwork and manual tabulation of material costs. ➌ Smoother roads: A paver that is low on material and begins to cool down can leave a bumpy surface. Knowing when new material will arrive allows for a consistent flow to the paver, resulting in smoother roads.

➍ Accurate accounting: Better recordkeeping of material usage improves planning for future projects. ➎ Reduced risk: Mitigates disputes over which plant material came from and whether appropriate routes were used. The entire e-Ticketing process can enhance project delivery for an industry that is struggling with how to keep up with an increasing amount of work. "Right now, 41% of the industry will be retiring from construction over the next 10 years," Valle says. "We need to find ways to bridge that talent gap. We need to start putting pieces in place to help with this massive drain that's occurring in an industry that's not attracting people. Digital tools help." The Minnesota DOT (MnDOT) has been ramping up the use of paperless technology for tracking deliveries of hot mix asphalt since 2018. MnDOT has seen the process improve safety and efficiency on road projects. "MnDOT construction projects require tons of hot mix asphalt each year, with over 188 road and bridge projects in the 2020 construction season alone," the Department said. E-ticketing was used on 29 MnDOT

How e-Ticketing Works projects in 2020. MnDOT is facilitating an e-ticketing task force that includes the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO), contractors, auditors, labor officials, asphalt producers and others. The group is developing recommendations for AASHTO MP39-19, intelligent construction specifications. Once e-ticketing recommendations are defined, they will be voted on by all 50 states and refined over seven years. As a complement to the AASHTO group (which is developing the specifications), The National Construction Materials e-Ticketing Task Force, advised by Former FHWA Administrator Greg Nadeau, is facilitating the discussion on the practical implementation across the US. The Task Force, and public and private sector members, are working together to discuss and tackle the numerous practical challenges that come with moving from a paper-based world to a digital world. RAPID GROWTH EXPECTED With COVID expediting the use of e-Ticketing technology, the changes for the asphalt industry are going to happen very rapidly. "Nobody wanted to be the first one to do it," Valle says. "Now that there are DOTs that have a fairly robust system and framework for success set up, these things are starting to come together extremely rapidly. DOTs are saying, 'okay, there are solutions out there that can then help us get fully up and running and on board in very short order, so let's do it.'" Change in the asphalt industry tends to happen slowly, but states are finding contractors who are willing to collaborate with them to get the process moving. "Pennsylvania has an e-Ticketing portal and are working with companies like Lindy Paving to get that data they need and into the portal in a manner that makes sense for the department," Valle says. "Between the

www.ForConstructionPros.com/Asphalt

ACON1121_12-13_Technology_JD.indd 13

asphalt paving associations, the DOT, e-Ticketing vendors and producers, we're all working together to get that information seamlessly transitioned in an efficient and standardized way." That data is beneficial to the DOT, but also to the producers. "Right now, this structured data lives in a relational database stored at the plant and not all the time is that data even aggregated or accessible," Valle says. "e-Ticketing, facilitates the unlocking of that information and what this does is provides the producers with better insights into their customer base and their productivity. So instead of looking at manual printouts and spreadsheets, they can start to get those productivity insights in real-time to learn what they can be doing better to help service their customers and understand those customer dynamics." With this collaboration, the model is now being set across the country for DOTs to work with associations and contractors to get everyone on the same page. Contractors will begin seeing the impact of this at an extremely rapid pace and they shouldn't be afraid to embrace it. "With technology accelerating rapidly, minds are being opened to the value of new ways of looking at old problems," Valle says, "It's the stuff that can actually help us be more productive and more intelligent by using data to give us better insights into the work. We see this push not only from the DOTs but also from producers who are gaining valuable insight to conduct their business in a more efficient way." PAINLESS IMPLEMENTATION As with any new process, contractors are reluctant to invest because of the cost and time associated with the change. With e-Ticketing, both perceived barriers are easily mitigated. "Change can be hard but once contractors experience how this can streamline their operations, they

Historically, plant mixed asphalt has been weighed, tracked and paid for with computergenerated paper tickets. Paper ticketing isn’t an ideal process for a variety of reasons— on-site ticket collection poses safety risks, tickets can be easily lost, and data must be tabulated manually, just to name a few. e-Ticketing process begins at the asphalt plant, where workers load delivery trucks with hot mix asphalt. Under the traditional system, a computer generates a paper ticket, which includes relevant information such as the weight and cost of the asphalt. With help from GPS tracking, e-Tickets record the amount of asphalt loaded, departure and arrival times and other information, according to MnDOT. Project managers and others can pull up the information in real-time on their smartphones or laptops. The paperless process helps them track labor compliance information, such as prevailing wage monitoring, and improves safety because it eliminates the need to collect paper tickets in a busy work zone. usually will understand this is something they need," Valle says. "It will help make them better communicators, help them get paid faster and help keep everyone safe as well." And once you decide to proceed with implementation, vendors can get your company up and running fast. "We have an implementation team that will work with contractors and producers to get them going and get the information integrated into the necessary systems," Valle says. "Our training teams will work with them and get them trained so they are fully supported. It's a fairly painless process that can be ready to go in a week." As more states ramp up their e-Ticketing requirements, producers need to be ready to comply.

Mobile Crushing Saves

TIME & MONEY Recycling of virgin or waste concrete and asphalt on the job site eliminates transportation fees and can lower costs

T

he construction industry is one of the largest recyclers in the country, recycling and reusing asphalt and concrete in massive amounts. Today's mobile crushers are ideal for use in a wide range of applications, including for asphalt and concrete or for mixed construction and demolition waste. For larger road construction or demolition projects, on-site recycling and crushing of materials can be beneficial to the project bottom line. Processing, screening and crushing existing concrete and asphalt on-site eliminates unnecessary transportation costs and hassles. The recycled product may be used on the current project at hand, sold to another job, or transported and stored for future work – saving space in landfills and saving money. Recycling on the jobsite also mitigates the cost of buying virgin aggregate. Other advantages of recycling concrete and asphalt right at your location include: • Eliminating or reducing tipping fees and disposal costs • Eliminating usage demand for much needed landfill space • Eliminating or reducing transportation costs • Helping preserve virgin deposits and protects the environment • Lowering aggregate material cost for your construction project

S V

M

$ • Lowering traffic impact and reduced energy costs HOW MOBILE CRUSHING WORKS Screening and crushing plants receive the material from the initial crushing process and are small enough to be mobile. Additional crushing further reduces large particle sizes, while the screener sorts out material, allowing the right size material to pass through and returning the larger particles back to the crusher for further processing until they are small enough to be used. In order to smooth out the gradation of the crushed particle and ensure a higher quality material, the new aggregate can be fed into the crusher hopper and mixed with the recycled material.

Today’s mobile crushers are ideal for use in a wide range of applications, including as a mobile recovered concrete crusher, or for asphalt and mixed C&D waste.

Recycled aggregate materials offer superior compaction, better yield and greater durability over virgin (quarry or pit) aggregate bases. The use of recycled aggregates are typically authorized by State Transportation Departments for use in roadbeds and drainage projects. To do this, contractors need specialized equipment that they either rent or own. For smaller projects, a crushing attachment or small portable crusher can be useful for turning concrete into usable aggregate.

SPECIAL REPORT For larger jobs, mobile crushing units are ideal. The stand-out feature of the mobile crusher or tracked impactor for recycling applications is its mobility, combined with high productivity per hour. Units are fully self-contained on their tracked undercarriage and can easily be driven off a trailer by one operator and quickly put to work, with excellent capability for moving directly to materials. Some models are even capable of tracking (moving about on their tracks) while crushing. Every time material is moved around or off the jobsite, labor and expenses are involved. Mobile crushers bring the machine to the job site, right to the pile and allow for efficient material processing.

Every time material is moved around or off the jobsite, labor and expenses are involved. Mobile crushers bring the machine to the job site, right to the pile, and allow for efficient material processing.

CRUSHERS: RENT VS. OWN When it comes to investing in crushing equipment, buying versus renting can offer distinct trade-offs. Buying crushing equipment usually requires a larger investment than renting. Renting can allow for a smaller initial investment; but depending on the job length and frequency of use, rental costs could add up over time. Larger volumes of material will require a dedicated crusher, which is not only a large capital investment, but a heavy time commitment as well. Crushers require a substantial amount of room. When you fold out a screen plant and set up a jaw crusher, the equipment is not small, so you need to plan for that on project sites. You need room for the stockpiles as well.

Large crushers also require support equipment like a dozer or another excavator to feed the crusher and take away the recycled material to the stockpile. Operating and maintenance costs can also add up over time. Your crew will need to be trained on how to use the equipment and how to troubleshoot the machine in case of a breakdown. For many reasons, renting this equipment or hiring a specialized crushing subcontractor may be beneficial. If you employ well-trained team members, buying and maintaining crusher equipment may be no more costly than renting regularly serviced equipment. However, the unexpected happens, employing team members on site could resolve unexpected more quickly than waiting on service from your rental partner. Carefully consider the economics before committing to on-site crushing. Justifying this expense requires that you have sufficient material to crush. Many say having a crusher on-site is not worth the expense unless there is 3,000 tons of material or more. Ultimately, it will come down to how much you will use the equipment and if you can keep it busy.

For more information on mobile crushing, visit ForConstructionPros. com/21070865

Recycling on the jobsite mitigates the cost of buying virgin stone and it can be stockpiled to build something else on the property. Crushing concrete on-site is one of the most popular forms of recycling.

The new Savannah location was right at the approach of a major international airport so C.W. Matthews worked closely with Astec on the building of that plant to avoid any issues.

C.W. Matthews partners with Astec for three new plant installs during the 2020 season

I

n 1946, C.W. Matthews returned from World War II looking for work. While the company's humble beginnings may have started with grading farm ponds, they have grown exponentially, and now complete grading, excavating, concrete and bridge work throughout the state of Georgia. In 1957, the company began to make hot mix asphalt and never looked back. Today, the company operates 27 asphalt plants throughout the state, adding three new in the last year alone. The company broke into a competitive market to better serve their customers and worked with the team at Astec to do so. “Astec has been a great partner for us,” Lee Smith, senior vice president of asphalt plant operations for C.W. Matthews says. “The reliability of the equipment, their proximity to our location and the strength of their engineering and sales teams have solidified our relationship with them over the years." INVESTING IN THE FUTURE 2020 was a year that will go down in history for many reasons. For C.W. Matthews, they will remember it as the year they continued their growth with the purchase of three new Astec Double Barrel plants, installing one in a brand new market for the company - Savannah.

ACON1121_24-27_Production_JD.indd 25

“We saw an opportunity to grow in Savannah after we were approached by a contractor in the area to do some asphalt paving on the I-16/I-95 job,” Smith says. “There was good potential there for us.” When it came time to install the new plant at the new location, C.W. Matthews encountered a few challenges. “Savannah was a unique location and we had a few hurdles to go through,” Smith says. “We were in a seismic zone. We were in a flood zone being next to the coast. Then the plant location was right at the approach of a major International airport so we had some things to contend with on the building of that plant.” Astec engineers were onsite to assist the C.W. Matthews team in choosing the best options given the site circumstances. “They showed us what obstacles we were facing and gave us different avenues that we could choose from,” Smith says. “We were given several choices for options at the plant that we could choose based on what they came up with.” In Savannah, C.W. Matthews installed three 200-ton silos, versus the 300-ton, because of the height requirements they were up against near the airport. The seismic zone also contributed to the decision. “If we wanted to go with larger silos, we would have had to change our foundation and make some structural steel changes as well,” Smith adds.

PRODUCTION NOTES In Macon, the install team was up against a time crunch to get the plant running so C.W. Matthews could provide mix for a large Interstate project in the area.

TWO EXISTING LOCATIONS, TWO NEW PLANTS After the Savannah plant was up and running, C.W. Matthews made the decision to install two other plants in their existing locations to better serve their customers. The work was completed in phases with the install in Villa Rica happening first. “We had an existing facility there that dated probably to the late 90s, an old Gencor plant,” Smith said. “We completely tore it down and built a 100% new Astec plant.” Then the install team moved to the Macon location. In Macon, C.W. Matthews had recently acquired a business who was operating a 1970’s model batch plant. Again, they went in, cleared the site, put in foundations and installed a completely new Astec plant. In Macon, the install team was up against a time crunch to get the plant running. “In the Macon location, we had planned on an upgrade and we were fortunate to be the low bidder on a large Interstate project in the area,” Smith said. “That ramped up the need to speed up the process of preparing the site and putting the plant in. Astec really stepped it up on the manufacturing of the equipment, and the shipping and installation, so we could meet our project deadlines.”

RELIABILITY TO DEPEND ON C.W. Matthews knew they could count on Astec to move these projects forward because of their long shared history. “On top of the reliability they offer, we've had just a great working relationship with Astec for many years,” Smith says. “We know we can call our sales representative, Jonathan Brown, at any time and he will talk internally with his team, and they will provide us with some different scenarios until we all find what we all feel good with.” At the end of the day, C.W. Matthews invested in these installs to better serve their customers. “When our customers use our facilities, if you have any breakdowns

or delays, it not only costs us as the producer, but there’s a tremendous cost on the customer as well for their truck times, their job times and their schedules,” Smith says. “So for us to upgrade our facilities and give reliable asphalt plants for all of our customers, it's just a tremendous benefit.” And C.W. Matthews has no plans to stop making upgrades for their customers. They are currently upgrading their Dalton facility to better serve their customers in that location while continuing to plan for future growth.

BUILT TO CONNECT

C

In an industry focused on manufacturing powerful equipment, our business remains decidedly human thanks to one simple belief: that our greatest achievement as a company is in mastering the art of connection. Astec helps build the infrastructure that physically connects the world, but the connections we build with people are what make us a true partner to the industry. We know the equipment we build is not our final product, because we’re not really in the business of building equipment. We’re in the business of building connections.

Connection is at the heart of everything we do The primary use for asphalt is creating pavement for building the roads that connect goods and services to their markets, people to their communities and families to each other. Astec asphalt plants are essential to building and maintaining these vital connections. That’s what drives us to design, manufacture, and sell innovative, efficient, and reliable equipment. And that’s what inspires us to connect to our customers through knowledgeable sales, receptive engineering and responsive parts and service.

our years is not a lot of time when you're tasked with constructing 14.4 miles of roadway. Add in six interchanges, seven grade crossings and 24 bridges, and you're really asking for a miracle. And that's exactly what Asheboro Bypass Constructors pulled off in North Carolina. This project actually started back in 2011 when the team at ThompsonArthur APAC Atlantic, a CRH

Company, teamed up with the Wright Brothers. They knew the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) was planning to improve U.S. 64 in the Asheboro area. The proposed project was a new 14.4-mile freeway bypassing Asheboro to the south. The project also featured a highlyanticipated 1.8 mile Zoo Connector, which would give visitors to the massively popular North Carolina Zoo

Why Was the Asheboro Bypass Needed? • Existing congestion along U.S. 64 was causing significant travel delays and increases the potential for crashes. Crash rates along U.S. 64 in the area are above the statewide average for similar roadways in North Carolina. This project should relieve the heavy traffic on Dixie Drive in Asheboro. • Existing and projected traffic and land use conditions along existing U.S. 64 through Asheboro diminish the route’s ability to function as an intrastate corridor. • Congestion and backups occur on N.C. 159 (Zoo Parkway) because local traffic mixes with zoo traffic. Visitors experience delays and residents have difficulty getting to and from their property. The project featured a 1.8 mile Zoo connector that provides better access to the North Carolina Zoo, a major tourist attraction and economic engine for the region. • It is integral to NCDOT’s plan to upgrade the U.S. 64 and N.C. 49 corridors from Statesville to Raleigh (U.S. 64) and from Charlotte to Raleigh (N.C. 49 and U.S. 64). better access to the park from the U.S. 64 Bypass straight to the zoo's entrance via a roundabout, instead of through residential areas. Thompson-Arthur and Wright Brothers teamed up with RK&K to design engineer the project and Right-of-Way Consultants to work with appraisals and acquisitions.

The four companies made up the design-build team, Asheboro Bypass Constructors, LLC (ABC). Using a design-build process allowed NCDOT to contract with the team of designers and contractors who would be responsible for the design, right of way acquisition and construction of the massive project.

The project was awarded to this team in 2015 and construction began in 2016. Completed in December of 2020, the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Asheboro Bypass was the most complex design-build project APAC-Atlantic, Inc., Thompson-Arthur Division, had ever undertaken. The design-build team worked together constructing the 14.4-mile, four-lane, divided highway from U.S. 64 west of Asheboro, through the rolling and rocky hills to the south, and back to U.S. 64 in the east. Here's how it happened. ACQUISITION & RELOCATION A project of this size requires massive amounts of planning and the ThompsonArthur team relied heavily on the team at Right-of-Way Consultants to start everything off right. Right-of-Way is one of North Carolina's most experienced right-of-way firms and they had 40 staff members committed to this project. "The biggest thing at the beginning was the right away acquisition," Jeff W. Saunders, construction projects

Part of the contract included aesthetic features, such as the elephant pictured here, another indication of how important the N.C. Zoo is to Asheboro, Randolph County and the region. With more than 700,000 visiting the zoo each year, this bypass provides easier access to the popular attraction.

manager at Thompson-Arthur said. "We needed to complete all of the utility relocation that was being coordinated before we could start work." ABC had to handle the complexity of connecting to, or crossing through, 17 different existing roadways, each with its distinct utility relocations and traffic control management. Compounding those challenges was the overall acquisition of 460 parcels for right-ofway and impacts to 103 locations on permitted jurisdictional streams.

48

ASPHALT CONTRACTOR NOVEMBER 2021

To get started, the project team strategically focused the land acquisition and utility relocation in areas of where reinforced concrete box culverts and bridges were needed that would provide early access to areas of mass grading. The sequence of land acquisition, utility relocation and construction was used repeatedly for the first two years before the entire footprint of the project finally took shape. The ABC team had to wait until the right-of-way was acquired and worked

to streamline areas where they wanted to begin the heavy excavating and mainline work. "We did a good job of identifying areas that we could get access to so we were able to get some of the mainline areas started," Saunders said. "We focused on prioritizing those specific right-of-way parcels so we could get to work excavating and grading as quickly as possible."

EXCAVATION & GRADING Thompson-Arthur partnered with Wright Brothers for the excavation and grading portion as they are the Southeastern U.S. leader in mass excavation. With the extensive heavy equipment and resources that were needed to complete the project, they were the right choice. "Thompson-Arthur is paving and bridges and Wright Brothers completes excavation and bridges," Larry Brickey, division president at Thompson-Arthur said. "Wright Brothers did all the grading, we did all the paving and stone base work and we split the bridge work in half." And it's a good thing Wright Brothers specializes in excavation with as there were over 500 acres to clear. They removed 8 million cubic yards of earth excavation and 2.75 million cubic yards of only rock excavation. Communication during this process was key to success as the movement of material had to be done in an efficient manner. The ABC team worked diligently to keep each of the three separate sections, five miles long each, progressing on schedule. "We had a very good schedule and a very good sequence operations," Brickey said. "We worked on a two month schedule and Michael Prince, who was the onsite manager for Wright Brothers, did a very good job at managing that." Wright Brothers put a project schedule together pre-bid using the Primavera project scheduler. That allowed the project to continually progress in parts along each section, even as the job was spread out over the 14 miles. "Wright Brothers did a very good job at knowing where the material was and where it had to go," Brickey adds. "One of the first cuts on the West End the job was a 60 foot cut which was pretty much rock the whole way. They would get that cut, get that fill in, get working on a bridge, complete the underground as well all the storm drain. And once that was done, we'd be in there paving." To help streamline the construction schedule and provide a consistent

pavement subgrade throughout the length of the project, the ABC Team elected to use 8-in. of aggregate base course in conjunction with geotextile stabilization fabric instead of choosing chemical subgrade stabilization. This process removed the need for repetitive and continuous soil sampling and testing, as well as the seasonal limitations for placing chemical stabilization, which extended the allowable time for pavement construction. Chemical stabilization would have switched back and forth from cement stabilization to lime stabilization depending on the many soil types that were encountered along the project stretch. Overall, using aggregate base simplified the process of pavement construction. ASPHALT PAVING The Thompson-Arthur team are experts in asphalt production and paving. They utilized their asphalt plant locations to make the mix for the project. The mix selection was chosen by the NCDOT, a B25-I19, CS 9-1/2-inch in base-bindersurface-laydown pattern. To enhance the safety of the project, specifically during rain events, the team added an asphalt pavement layer to U.S. 64 throughout the project limits. This open-graded friction course asphalt layer has become more prevalent on high-volume, high-speed roadways to proactively combat hydroplaning. This open-graded friction course is a permeable asphalt layer that will allow water on the surface to drain vertically through the layer instead of draining naturally off the roadway. As a result, during rainfall there is an increase in surface drainage, limiting the potential for hydroplaning, and driver visibility due to noticeable reductions in water spray behind vehicles. In all, Thompson-Arthur team members put down 745,000 tons of asphalt from their plant locations. They utilized Weiler material transfer vehicles to keep the flow of material moving to their VOGELE pavers. HAMM rollers were onsite to assist with compaction.

The ABC team kept drone footage of the project throughout the project to keep a historical perspective of the job as it got built.

In all, over 200 employees were working on this jobsite at peak times. The total price tag for the project, including construction costs, design, right-of-way acquisition, utility relocation consulting costs, plan revisions and numerous additions, added up to roughly $264 million. Ultimately, nearly four years and approximately 1,360,029 man-hours later, Asheboro Bypass Constructors delivered the design-build project on schedule, while providing more than $1.4 million in value engineering.

How do Different Environmental Factors Affect Asphalt? even further split. When the ice begins to melt, the water will move deeper into the crack, only to freeze and thaw again. This cycle can lead to the beginning of a pothole or other deep cracks.

hen it comes to pavement, the money and time you spend to make it durable should not go down the drain. Environmental factors can have significant impacts on your pavement performance and cause serious damage. Let’s take a look at the different environmental factors to watch out for.

1. TEMPERATURE Temperature affects pavement in various ways. Hot temperatures cause asphalt to expand, leading to cracks and allowing for water to seep in. This will begin to erode layers of your pavement, making for an unsightly appearance. Meanwhile, in the winter months, the cold temperatures at or below freezing will result in cracking, too. If water seeps into the cracks in the winter, the water will freeze and expand causing an

52

ASPHALT CONTRACTOR NOVEMBER 2021

ACON1121_52-53_Preservation_JD.indd 52

Water can be extremely damaging to asphalt, as moisture will decrease the material’s strength and durability. When water sits on the surface, particularly during heavy precipitation, the oil separates from the asphalt. If this happens, you can expect asphalt shrinkage, water soaking into the cracks to expand in colder temperatures and the development of cracks. Typically, asphalt isn’t affected much by light rain. Where the problem comes is with insufficient drainage and water logging. Each time it rains, the water builds up, making damage and deterioration only increase.

3. TRAFFIC AND VEHICLE LOADS Pavement exposure to heavy loads and traffic can cause pavement fatigue which will bend, stress and eventually break the pavement. If the pavement experiences heavy traffic from large vehicles, the asphalt will have a consistent wheel load that can cause stress. Also, damage is more significant if wheels are moving at a very slow speed. The ongoing stress will eventually damage the asphalt. WHY MAINTENANCE IS SO IMPORTANT Don’t let your time and money go to waste. Stay ahead of your pavement

repair before issues get out of control. Routine maintenance is essential to avoiding severe damage. Some reasons why pavement preservation is so important include: • Safety – Whether it’s your sidewalk, driveway, or the middle of the road, uneven pavement can be dangerous. Avoid risk of injury and potential damage to vehicles with quality asphalt maintenance. • Cost – When the damage is extremely deep or large, the repair can be very expensive. Small cracks, though, only need quick fixes, so you can save a lot of money by staying vigilant. • Increased lifespan – If you continually keep up with your asphalt maintenance, you can keep your surface preserved and protected for a longer amount of time. This will save you time and money, and you will increase the durability of your asphalt. • Curb appeal – Cracks and potholes in your pavement are unattractive. Keep your surrounding pavement welcoming to prevent reduced resale value. Over time, pavement is going to deteriorate – whether through heat, rain, snow, or simply regular use – and potholes, cracks and fractures are inevitable. Proper maintenance will ensure safety of your asphalt, prevent further damage and save you money longterm. This article was contributed by Emma Iammarino with Unique Paving Materials, Cleveland, OH.

ust as Congress is considering more than $1 trillion in added infrastructure investment that is expected to increase demand for skilled trade workers, a national study released by the Illinois Economic Policy Institute (ILEPI) has found that graduates of joint labor-management (union) apprenticeship programs in the construction industry achieve nearly equal wages and benefits, on average, as other workers with four-year college degrees. Registered apprenticeships enable participants to "earn while they learn" with no out of pocket expenses for the training provided. The study analyzed 10 years of data from the Current Population Survey’s Annual Social and Economic Supplement released by the U.S. Department of Labor and U.S. Census Bureau. In its examination of core economic, fiscal and social metrics, “Union Apprenticeships: The Bachelor’s Degree of the Construction Industry – Data from the United States 2010-2020" determined

that registered (union) apprenticeship programs can provide the economic security and upward mobility to enable blue-collar workers to achieve middleclass lifestyles comparable to those with bachelor's degrees and associate degrees. “The data reveals that broad stigmas that have long been associated with vocational training alternatives to college are simply not grounded in fact,” said Frank Manzo IV, study ILEPI Policy Director. “Compared with twoand four-year colleges, joint labor-management apprenticeships in construction deliver a more robust training regimen, similar diversity outcomes, competitive wage and benefit levels, and comparable tax revenue for states and local governments, while leaving graduates entirely free of burdensome student loan debt.” Employer-only (non-union) apprenticeship programs, on the other hand, were shown to produce outcomes more on par with national averages for workers with high school diplomas or GEDs. Overall, the study found that non-union construction workers: • Earned an average $18,300 less per year than their unionized counterparts, • Were significantly less likely to have access to health insurance or a retirement plan at work, • Were more than twice as likely to be living in poverty, • Were nearly three times more likely to be reliant on Medicaid, • And were significantly less likely to be married — a metric other research has linked to social stability and upward economic mobility. Based on the findings, Manzo asserted, "It is clear that the most viable such pathway in construction runs through the joint labor-management apprenticeships and the unionized side of the industry.”

Recent studies in Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois and Oregon have also concluded that construction apprenticeships offer up to 41% more hours of training than bachelor’s programs at public universities, and up to 183% more than associate degrees at community colleges, ILEPI points out. In addition, the programs enrolled a higher share of African American trainees in three of the five states studied, and a higher share of Hispanic trainees in four of the five states. “By providing more people from more backgrounds with the in-demand skills needed to secure good-paying jobs, the data shows that joint labormanagement apprenticeship programs consistently deliver bachelor’s degreelevel outcomes,” Manzo concluded. “That’s great news for workers looking for alternatives to college, and an instructive framework for policymakers looking for ways to grow America’s middle class.” Joint labor-management apprenticeship programs as described in the ILEPI study as the "bachelor's degree of the construction industry,” offering outcomes, and opportunities, rivaling universities and community colleges while enabling "students" to emerge from the programs debt-free.
