The Investment of Training Making sure your workers are properly trained is an investment in them and in the future of your company

W

hen some companies think about training, they only see dollar signs. Money spent on sending your crew to a training course and the lost time and dollars missed by not having boots on the ground.

What companies might not see is that training is actually essential for your company to stay competitive in an industry that’s changing faster than we realize. It’s also an important key to keeping your employees happy and invested in their careers. This is especially true for the younger workers who desire training and growth and who will carry your company to the future.

It’s a double edge sword that “Millennials” are the best-educated generation so far. This is partly why the construction industry is having trouble recruiting them. Organizations who have been able to retain Millennials have made the investment in them through education and career development and by making training a priority.

Construction companies should take any chance they can to help employees learn something new. If you’re a larger employer, you could start a tuition assistance program; if you’re smaller, think about allowing employees to adjust their schedules so they can take classes.

Some training opportunities for construction companies are now free of cost and can be taken at the leisure of the employee. One such option is Autodesk ConTech Academy which is a no cost, on-demand option. The courses provide an opportunity to learn about the latest

construction technology trends, something today's construction business can no longer avoid (and shouldn't either).

They’ll feel appreciated and can bring back the skills learned to the rest of the crew. Plus you can take comfort in knowing your equipment is being operated at the optimal levels it was designed for through this proper training.

Sizing up for the job With a 98-inch transport width and an overall length of 17 feet, 10 inches,

Once on site, the Ultimat 16 screed can hydraulically extend to quickly double the machine’s base width to a full 16 feet. Add additional extensions for an 18-foot paving width.

At 6,500 pounds, the Ultimat 16 delivers a consistently smooth surface at high density and full width.

The auger-to-screed distance is also adjustable via the tow arm position, allowing flexibility for any application and asphalt mix.

How Proper Software Training Helps Ease Pre-Work Anxiety

Much like an investment in a new piece of construction equipment, the benefits of increased productivity come when the operator knows the machine… and the software

he construction industry has become more complex and technologically sophisticated.

Gone are the days when a smart owner/ operator and his backhoe could handle most projects. Back then, measurements were close approximations and quality was achieved through the skills and experience of the hired contractor.

Today, contractors and project owners expect more. Speed, exacting accuracy, productivity and quality long-life results are the expectation. Construction machines are more technologically advanced and sophisticated software creates project plans, manages the work and documents the results.

Software is at the heart of earthwork and utility estimating. It performs sitework take-off features that include calculating cut and fill, stripping, strata quantities, paving and concrete materials, topsoil re-spread, areas, lengths, trench excavation and backfill.

“Proper utilization of software assures accurate results, increases productivity and assures full benefits of the software,” Steve Warfle, product manager for InSite Software Inc., Rush, NY, says. “Many years ago we recognized that having great features in our software don’t always guarantee they will be used.”

Training software users has proven to be beneficial for getting the most out of the investment. The American Society for Training and Development (ASTD)

(ASTD) recently conducted a study of over 2,500 companies to determine how training investments affected a firm’s total shareholder return. ASTD found that training resulted in a significant improvement in shareholder return.

By providing the training, the companies in the study gave their employees the tools they needed to become more productive. They also cited these benefits: • Increased profitability • Consistent quality • Improved customer satisfaction • Employee development • Better employee retention TRAINING ON-DEMAND Years ago, InSite held held regional training classes. “They were good, but weren’t always available when a contractor needed them, Warfle says.

“Plus they required an employee to travel, which meant time and cost.”

Warfle and his colleagues at InSite could see the benefits of training for their students but needed a better training and information delivery vehicle.

What they developed is a real time, online training program, which can provide classes frequently and in progressive sequence from beginner level through advanced content mastery. What they are after is for their students to increase their knowledge, skills and comfort with the capabilities of their software. The thinking is that a well-designed training program provides the most efficient way (least amount of time) to achieve the maximum benefits of the software.

“Purchasing technology and then not using it to its potential is expensive,” Tara O'Neill, director of training for InSite says. “It’s amazing to hear long term users take a training class for the first time and exclaim ‘I didn’t know it could do that!’”

Training on any kind of construction

software is intended to help the users develop the skills to effectively apply the software to their need or challenge.

It is the base knowledge that training provides that gives users the know-how and confidence to take control and manage their own projects A dual monitor training set-up can help facilitate learning. With the set-up, one of the student’s monitors is used to view the instructor’s screen. The other monitor is used to complete the exercises shown by mimicking the instruction.

The instructor can also see the student’s progress and take over if necessary to correct or clarify their work on screen. The dual monitor allows both the student and trainer to interact throughout the class and creates hands-on participation, rather than a lecture style class.

“Respected construction software instructors have field experience and know how to apply the software to real world needs and problems,” O’Neill says. “Knowing the subject matter is very important, but helping students to be comfortable with the skills they are learning and discuss how they could be applied to their own projects after training is critical.”

Software investments are necessary to be competitive and successful. Wise construction contractors realize that employee wages are often a far more significant expense. The logic follows that much like an investment in a new piece of equipment, the benefits of increased productivity come when the operator knows the machine… and the software! ith the Trump Administration focused heavily on improving infrastructure across the U.S. and the construction industry simultaneously experiencing an outflow of retiring workers and an influx of junior personnel, construction and engineering firms need all the help they can get with training.

to Offer Broad Paving Focus in Cleveland Paving topics dominate technical sessions at National Pavement Expo – and there’s 29 management sessions too

ational Pavement Expo’s conference sessions will cover a broad variety of paving topics when NPE visits the Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland, Feb. 7-10 in Cleveland, OH. The four-day conference will offer 54 technical and management sessions (including 39 new topics). Asphalt paving sessions will cover the basics for crew members and those new to the business as well as more advanced “how to” topics for those looking to improve efficiency on the job.

Here’s a paving-and-repair focused sampling of some of NPE 2018’s sessions.

Applying “Best Practices” to Your Paving Operation, presented by paving jobsite specialist John Ball, Top Quality Paving, is a “how to” program for contractors, their crews and newcomers to the paving business that will take contractors step-by-step through the paving operation. Ball relies on videos he’s taken on consulting jobs throughout the year to demonstrate various paver operations,

proper and improper techniques, paving “best practices,” and problems and their solutions. Ball will cover paving, rolling and handwork basics; paver, tractor and screed operations; proven rolling techniques; state-of-the-art joint construction and the impact of teamwork and communication on job quality.

Basic Pavement Defects: Causes, Solutions – and How to Set Your Price!

Pavement Maintenance & Reconstruction magazine Advisory Board member Nick Howell, T & N Asphalt Services, connects the dots from the pavement defect, its cause, the “best practices” repair solution – and how to set your price to fix it. Defects covered will be alligator (fatigue) cracking, “normal” cracking, potholes, surface oxidation and raveling. For each defect Howell will work through a job-costing example to uncover all the cost elements to include before adding in your profit and determining your price.

Improving Your Infrared Pavement Repair Operation. Another Pavement Advisory Board member, Tom Eosso, Eosso Brothers Paving, has become the go-to infrared contractor at NPE’s conference. He’ll cover the basics of the infrared process and how to perform the work (including a step-by-step explanation of a basic infrared repair). Relying on photos and on-the-job video, Eosso will “work through” examples of the variety of jobs and repairs that can be completed successfully using infrared technology. And, he’ll highlight specific infrared field techniques and approaches to help make infrared pavement repair efficient, successful and profitable.

Another John Ball is Solving the Paving Puzzle: Video Solutions Show How a Job Fits Together. Covering all phases of a typical paving job, Ball will use video to create a “case study” for this unique paving session. Ball will “take apart” an entire paving job, then put it back together so attendees can see how everything works together including job planning (including determining tonnage, delivery pace and production speed), crew meetings, paving layout, paving, and rolling. Plus, video will reveal “best practices” for each element of the job.

An annual NPE paving expert, Jim Scherocman, P.E., consulting engineer, will present Identifying, Preventing and Solving Mat Problems to help paving contractors identify potential problems in the asphalt mat so they can provide a better end product for their customers.

Scherocman will cover how to differentiate among four primary problem areas: the properties of the mix itself (checking, shoving, rutting, moisture content, bleeding); site related conditions (milling, minimum layer thickness, tack coat application, soft subgrade); equipment related problems (screed settings, surface shadows, streaks); and long-term durability issues (raveling, sliding, fatigue cracking, delamination, drainage structures).

He’ll also discuss how to prevent these problems from happening and how to fix them if they do occur.

Scherocman follows that session with Effective Compaction of Hot Mix Asphalt, which he describes as “the single most important factor in the ultimate performance of a hot mix asphalt pavement.”

A highly-rated session every year at NPE, this seminar will outline the basic elements of compaction and the use of various types of rollers, including static steel wheel, pneumatic tire and vibratory steel wheel rollers. Scherocman will cover compaction of both stiff and tender hot mix asphalt mixtures and will emphasize the use of different rollers and rolling patterns for different paving situations.

Fundamentals of Asphalt Pavers and Asphalt Paving, presented

by Nigel McKay, Weiler, covers paving basics “from the ground up” for new hires, anyone new to the paving business, and anyone considering becoming a paving contractor.

McKay will cover asphalt paving equipment, including “tractor basics” and the differences between track and rubber-tire pavers, and he’ll discuss each component of the paver – augers, screws, conveyors and screeds – including what each component does, how each works, how the components work together, and how operators can adjust components to get the desired end result of a high-quality mat. He also will offer a checklist of tips to help operators make sure the paving machine is operating at peak performance.

In a session introduced at the 2017 NPE, John Ball decided to tackle paving jobs via drawings.

He has updated Diagram It! How to Pave a Parking Lot & a Cul-deSac from Start to Finish and will use step-by-step diagrams and some video to teach how to determine the amount of mix for each job, how to determine haul truck size and delivery schedule, how to “lineout” the start of the work and plan the paving and how to achieve the required slope and density. He’ll “solve” some issues faced when paving a cul-de-sac – you need a skid steer and a skilled haul truck driver – and he’ll present “best practices” to guarantee quality and efficiency.

How to Run the “Perfect Paving Project” is a new paving session from Pavement Advisory Board member Connie Lorenz, Asphalt Restoration Services, who says that while “there’s no such thing as a ‘Perfect Paving Project’ – commercial customers still expect it. So Lorenz has developed a “pursuit of perfection” session that will help contractors equip and motivate their team for success. Topics she’ll cover are: what to include in the essential pre-con meeting, tips on communicating with clients (and a unique suggestion to help them better grasp what’s going to be happening on their property), how to plan for and handle the “unexpected issues” that can arise on any project, the value of a “team walk through,” and how that leads to a successful end-ofproject client meeting.

Just as John Ball kicked off NPE Feb. 7 with his 3-hour workshop, he ends on Feb. 10 with this 90-minutue session, Troubleshooting HMA Joint Construction. Ball will emphasize proper construction techniques of butt and tapered transverse joints and standard and wedge longitudinal joints, and he’ll provide practical tips on joint construction hand work. He’ll also explain why construction of the first lane of paving is important in joint success and how the screed can improve joint construction. Ball will provide an update of the latest research and "best practices" tips, and offer insights on joint compaction, including rolling from both the hot and cold side, as well as joint compaction Dos and Don’ts.

Asphalt Institute to Conduct 3 sessions at NPE 2018 As he has for a number of years at National Pavement Expo, Wayne Jones, Asphalt Institute (AI) senior regional engineer, will present three sessions at the 2018 NPE, Feb. 7-10 at the Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland.

Several years ago Jones and AI began presenting a cornerstone session of NPE, a 3-hour workshop titled Understanding Pavement Evaluation, Preservation and Repair Options. Because contractors are constantly facing pavement repairs in addition to overlays and new construction, this annual workshop covers “the distresses and cure options for all types of pavement defects.” Jones’ goal is to teach contractors how what they see on the pavement surface can give them insights into what’s happening beneath the pavement.

Jones will cover “best practices” for repairing an asphalt pavement, provide tips on how to “up-sell” operations to solve long-term problems for customers, and how applying the right treatment at the right time can increase the overall service life of a pavement.

In his Materials Selection: Matching the Right Materials to the Right Project 90-minute session, Jones answers questions such as: Can I pave a residential driveway with a DOT mix? How can I avoid customers holding up payment because the mat “looks too coarse”? What is MSCR and will it change my operation? Developed specifically for NPE, this session will provide basic-plus knowledge of asphalt materials and mix designs to help make projects easier to pave, look better, sell faster, and be more profitable.

Introduction to Thickness Design and Pavement Distresses is the second of Jones’ sessions specially developed for NPE. With a focus on the basics of pavement design and what makes pavements fall apart, this 90-minute seminar will introduce free web-based thickness design tools that allow you to design exactly the pavement each customer wants.

Jones will then discuss the distresses that attack asphalt pavements causing them to fail – with an eye toward helping contractors make the best-possible repair decisions for clients. Based on AI’s best-selling manual MS-16 Asphalt in Pavement Maintenance and Preservation, this session will provide suggestions on how to improve project quality and attract repeat customers without adding additional cost.

Maryland company switches their plant configuration and makes upgrades to their 50 year old asphalt plant

C

hanging your plant configuration is not a decision you take lightly. Not only is buying new equipment costly, but any lapse in production means you’re also not making any money. However, when your

plant is no longer producing to a level that keeps you competitive, it’s time to make a change.

Laurel Asphalt, located in Laurel, MD, owns and operates two asphalt plants that cater to the small contractor as well as large, and is certified to produce materials for the State of Maryland and all surrounding counties.

Their location in Laurel, MD was a 3-ton batch plant dating back to the 1970’s and was starting to cause challenges for the company.

“Over the years, Laurel had changed components on the plant, but the general

the short paving season, putting a lot of wear and tear on an already worn out plant.

"We really needed to increase our capabilities," Rumer says. "We had a very hard time running to meet our customer needs and demands. Plant parts were getting harder and harder to find just to fix the old components of the plant."

Plus, Rumer says the crew was sometimes required to work 16 hours a day to get the material out the door and repair the plant, driving up costs and frustration.

“The company took down their aging plant components,” David Garrett, sales manager with Meeker Equipment says.

“Laurel Asphalt chose Meeker Equipment Company to replace the aging Dryer with a new one. They also added a mixing drum which gave them the increased capabilities they were looking for.”

Today, after a three-month overhaul, the company is now able to produce material consistently and reliably with less time spent fixing problems so more time can be spent making material for their customers.

COMPONENT OVERHAUL While the plant overhaul included new storage for their increased production, replacing two old horizontal storage tanks with two vertical tanks, they also needed to overhaul their electrical and plant controls.

The company completely upgraded their electric service coming into a new control room and replaced all of their motor controls with a new motor control center.

“Laurel had a lot of challenges with their electric, it was very old.” Garrett says. “They added an unloading pump, asphalt metering skid, calibration tank and they installed new process controls and Liquid Vision for the valve control and tank monitoring.”

The Meeker Liquid Vision System was installed to help better control their production without having to manually switch the tanks.

“The Liquid Vision was installed with their actuator valves on the storage system,” Garrett says. “Now when they want to switch tanks from one liquid to the other, no one has to go out and manually turn a valve. The Liquid Vision controls the actuators so they select their tanks from the control room. They can also see the levels on all the tanks without having to go out to the tank farm.”

"They upgraded to Libra PlantWise Blending Control System based on their familiarity with the controls.”

MARRYING OLD WITH NEW When you’re making changes, not every single component will be in need of an upgrade. This is where Laurel Asphalt encountered challenges during the switch.

“One of the things that’s always challenging is marrying the old with the new,” Garret says. “They put in a new dryer and a new mixing drum, but they reused their existing Hauck Burner.

However, the new dryer had a RAP collar so we had to extend the nose on the existing burner in order for it to fit.”

The company used what they could

“In the past, the company didn’t have to weigh their aggregate and their RAP because it was going in to a batch plant,” Garret says. “With the new drum plant, they need to know what’s going in there so we had to add belt scales.”

Another challenge was working around those hard fixed points that the company did not want to have to move.

“They had existing silos and drag slats that we weren’t going to move,” Garret says. “So in that case, the discharge had to hit that point perfectly and on the other end, we didn’t change the RAP or the cold feed bins so all the materials coming in to the plant had to hit those perfectly too.

“You have all of these fixed points and you’re working in the middle trying to make it all fit back together and it all came together very nicely.” AC

When Spec’ing Asphalt Trucks

Selection impacts quality and productivity of entire operation everal different truck configurations are capable of delivering asphalt to a paver. End dump trucks and live bottom trucks can unload directly into the paver. Live bottom trucks have a conveyor system that moves the load directly to the paver without segregation. Belly dump trailers deposit material in a windrow, so the mix must be picked up by another machine, such as a material transfer vehicle, before it goes into the paver.

But the goal with any asphalt delivery

system is to maximize the quantity of asphalt delivered to the asphalt paver while minimizing cycle times. The more asphalt that a truck can carry per load, the better – assuming the load can be unloaded into the paver or in front of a material transfer vehicle without disrupting paving operations.

Every truck is limited to a maximum weight it can carry. Limitations are either based on the total Gross Combination Vehicle Weight (GCW) or on each axle and axle group depending upon applicable state or federal regulations.

The limits are based on the number of axles and their spacing.

The Federal Bridge Formula is used to calculate weight limits on the national

highway system. By using pusher axles, you can increase the payload using the bridge formula. A typical dump truck with three or four axles spread over 20 ft. is typically limited to 51,000 lbs. GCW. A trailing axle offers a greater payload increase using the bridge formula because it increases the overall length of the truck. Research applicable regulations in all areas you plan to operate before spec’ing the wheel configuration. “In many states, adding lift axles does increase the payload, but local bridge and weight laws can be complex,” says Tim Wrinkle, construction product manager, Mack Trucks. dealer and relying on its expert knowledge of local laws.

THE CASE FOR SUPER DUMPS In areas that do adhere to the Federal Bridge Formula, a Super Dump can be an effective alternative. With these vehicles, a trailing axle increases the overall length of the truck to maximize the payload, yet folds out of the way for maneuverability on the jobsite. The Super Dump can also have up to three pusher axles. This can increase the maximum

load to the 80,000-lb. limit.

Super Dumps are capable of hauling payloads from 19 to 26 tons, if you can properly distribute the loads to each axle.

A typical tandem dump truck is limited to about a 13-ton payload in accordance with federal bridge law.

Increased truck capacity is important when directly unloading into the asphalt paver. The paver must be stopped each time another truck is backed up. With more asphalt payload, you spend more time paving and less time stopping.

Tacoma, WA-based Tucci & Sons uses Kenworth T880 Super Dumps to deliver asphalt for its paving division.

These trucks compliment a fleet of tractors and end dump trailers and transfer trucks. The Super Dumps are spec’d with the PACCAR MX-13 engine rated at 500 hp and 1,850 lbs.-ft. of torque. They achieve a 25-ton capacity by utilizing three 8,000lb. Watson & Chalin Tru-Track Alumilite steerable lift axles and an 8,000-lb. steerable flying tag axle to meet Federal Bridge Formula requirements and increase the trucks’ GCW to 80,000 lbs.

“Drivers in our T880 Super Dumps can deliver their loads to the jobsites, dump them and then go right back to our Lakewood or Tacoma plant for another load,” Tucci says. The Super Dumps are also more maneuverable than the trucks and trailers. They measure 40 ft. from the front bumper to the rear steerable axle, while the tractor and end dump combination comes in at 75 ft.

This is important when paving in tighter urban areas.

With a Super Dump however, you may not have the maneuverability of a tandem axle dump truck. “If you are doing a cul-de-sac, you may not be able to maneuver that large truck,” says Chad Semler, director of product marketing for severe service trucks, Navistar. “You may have to use smaller trucks.”

CUT WEIGHT TO INCREASE PAYLOAD There are many ways to reduce weight and increase payload. One is to not overbuild the truck.

“From a chassis perspective, you want to have the most efficient truck,” says Semler. “Weight plays a critical role because you want to be able to haul as much weight as possible in each load to minimize your loads. So you want to have a chassis that is strong enough to carry the load, but not overweight either.”

The frame is one area where weight can be saved.

“With our new HX line, we have a 1/2-in.-thick frame rail,” says Semler. “It is a 3.5-million RBM frame rail and takes the place of a very common 10-in. frame rail that would be used in a dump truck application. It’s about 13% lighter than a double rail frame.”

In addition, with a standard double rail frame, the reinforcement rail stops under the cab. With the 1/2-in. single rail application, that strength goes all the way through the front of the truck.

The single frame rail also eliminates the corrosion jacking that occurs in a double frame rail when subjected to moisture.

Single rail frames can often be used for asphalt hauling.

“In many applications, a properly spec’d single frame rail will do the job due to the limited off-road exposure of a typical HMA project,” says Freightliner’s Haggai. “Our 1/2-in.-thick, 11 7/8in. steel frame is commonly used when a liner is not ordered.”

Mack’s Wrinkle expresses a similar sentiment, noting, “Our most popular frame rail setup on a dump is an 7/16-in x 11.8-in. rail without liner.”

Whether or not the single rail solution will work in your application depends upon a number of factors. “State regulations are going to play a big part in your configuration, which can also affect your frame and how much you can haul.

“Every state is different,” Semler says.

Another area where you can save weight and boost fuel efficiency is engine selection. Weight and fuel economy both suffer if you spec more engine than the job demands. Asphalt trucks spend a lot of time on the road; therefore, fuel economy more impact on operating costs.

Look closely at thick 11-7/8-in. steel the weights of the frame is commonly specific engines used when a liner is being compared, as not ordered. some engines are heavier than others. “When you go from a 15-liter down to our 12.4-liter, you are going to lose about 500 lbs.,” says Navistar’s Semler. “That 500 lbs. then becomes additional payload that you can carry. The difference going from our 12.4-liter to an 11-liter is much smaller — around 200 lbs. depending upon which 11-liter engine you choose.”

Geography makes a big difference in engine selection as well. “In some states, if you are running on a really flat surface and you want to maximize payload, there are a few applications where you can get by with a 9-liter engine and shed even more weight for that capacity,” Semler says. However, he cautions that you do give up durability and longevity because the engine works much harder. “But in some cases the economics pays for itself.”

CONSIDER DRIVER COMFORT Attracting and retaining drivers should be a priority. “Interior creature comforts are key since haulers spend long hours behind the wheel,” Haggai says. “Air ride seats, armrests, tilt and telescoping steering and well-insulated cabs are commonly ordered.”

Suspension choice impacts both stability and operator comfort. “We are seeing air ride suspension spec’d occasionally,” Haggai adds. “Some operators

prefer the stability of non-air ride units.

“Mechanical suspensions are still the most popular in dump models, thanks to the great stability, articulation and maintainability,” Wrinkle notes. For example, Mack’s Camelback and mRIDE rear suspensions offer increased articulation and stability.

“Air ride suspensions have become more popular recently, as they offer a better ride when unloaded,” he continues. “However, these suspensions can be limited in articulation and stability.

Driver knowledge and training is also very important with air suspensions, as drivers need to evacuate air bags before dumping the load. Depending on the setup and a driver’s experience, this can slow the dumping process.”

International uses the Hendrickson Haulmaxx suspension. “It is a rubber suspension with a beam,” Semler says. “It is very good for heavy loads without the joust of a spring.” It is also lightweight.

Plus, the suspension has evolved.

“There have been a lot of advancements in rubber suspensions in the past several years,” notes Semler. “Hendrickson developed a spring that has a hollow section that really helps the unladen ride quality. Once you load the truck, the hollow space disappears and you have the full load on the rubber spring.”

GEAR FOR SUCCESS With automated manual transmissions (AMTs) quickly becoming the dominant transmission in the dump truck market, you will want to ensure the AMTs in your trucks are compatible with asphalt paving applications.

“One of the most important components to consider when looking at efficiency in vocational trucks is the transmission,” Wrinkle says. “Our MP engines are the heart of a Mack truck, which makes our mDRIVE AMT the brains and the enabling element in our fully integrated powertrain that delivers performance and efficiency customers demand. A major limitation in the past has been the availability of transmissions and rear axle ratios that deliver both the startability and performance needed on the jobsite, along with the lower cruise rpm for fuel efficiency,” he adds.

“Mack’s mDRIVE HD 13- and 14-speed AMTs address this problem and enable us to give customers ‘two trucks in one.’ Thanks to the creeper gears, we can spec a dump with low rear axle gearing for great startability on severe jobsite terrain, as well as lower cruise rpms for better fuel efficiency at highway speeds.

“In general, a dump truck equipped with an mDRIVE HD 12-speed AMT already achieves better fuel efficiency compared to the same truck equipped with a conventional automatic transmission, thanks to the inherent efficiency benefits,” says Wrinkle. “That same truck could also see additional improvements in fuel efficiency by spec’ing an mDRIVE HD 13- or 14-speed AMT and selecting the proper rear axle ratios for performance both on the highway and on the jobsite.”

Another consideration is asphalt trucks can spend a significant portion of their time backing up to the paver.

“A truck spec’d with multi-speed reverse can be important to reverse quickly on the long stretches that you have to back

When a truck is pushed by an asphalt paver, you never want to hit the brakes.

“When spec’ing a truck that will be pushed by an asphalt paver, you need to make sure the transmission can go from being pushed in neutral to shifting to drive without having to apply the brakes and stop the paver,” Wrinkle says.

“Thanks to our fully integrated powertrain, we’re able to provide applicationspecific mDRIVE features like Rolling Start for our paving customers. Rolling Start allows drivers to shift the transmission into drive without pressing the truck’s service brakes, eliminating the possibility of creating a bump in the paving surface, which is a critical benefit for customers with paving applications.”

But AMTs are only one of the choices available. “The spec must strike a balance between low speed startability and efficiency at highway speed,” Haggai says. “Automatics and automated manuals continue to gain popularity, but many operators still prefer a manual.”

Also consider component layout if the asphalt truck is going to be pushed by the paver. “You have to pay attention to your brakes and your brake chamber locations,” Semler says. Dump trucks that are not in paving applications often have brake chambers that stick out past the tire envelope. “The asphalt paver would actually crash into your brakes.”

And it has happened.

“We have an asphalt braking package that flips the brake chambers up and tucks them inside the tire envelope,” Semler says. “When you back up to a paver, there is nothing that sticks out further than the envelope of the tires that would cause a problem with the paver.” AC

How to Speed Up a

Microsurfacing Job Contractor turns to hightech emulsifier to complete Brooklyn Bridge project

S

o, here’s the challenge: A microsurfacing contractor and emulsion producer was tasked with repaving the high-profile, heavily trafficked Brooklyn Bridge deck over the course of six nights during cool weather conditions, with limited paving hours and a heavy application required.

The project presented the following unique challenges: LIMITED PAVING HOURS Work could not begin until 10:00 p.m. with approximately two hours of prep work (to cover expansion joints and drain inlets) required each night before resurfacing could begin. All covers had to be removed and traffic markings installed before re-opening to traffic by 5:30 a.m.

NIGHTTIME AND COOL PAVING CONDITIONS Microsurfacing had to be done at night in high humidity and cool temperatures.

Ambient temperatures were in the low to mid 60s °F with a relative humidity of greater than 80%. Bridge deck surface temperatures were cool, in the upper 50s to low 60s.

Cooler, more humid conditions are typically more challenging because it generally takes longer after microsurfacing before the road can be re-opened to traffic. This is because at night and in cool conditions, the microsurfacing needs more time to set, cure and develop sufficient strength before traffic can return to the road.

Before A preservation project on the Brooklyn Bridge took the concrete bridge deck down to rebar prior to microsurfacing.

As a result, the contractor must stop paving much sooner than normal, sometimes up to a few hours in advance of opening the road to traffic, further limiting available microsurfacing hours.

This leads to slower production rates and reduced operational efficiency.

DOUBLE APPLICATION The Brooklyn Bridge application was a double lift, with each lift consisting of 28 lbs. of mix per square yard for a total of 56 lbs. per square yard. A tack coat was applied to the concrete bridge deck substrate that had exposed rebar prior to the microsurfacing paving.

Use of tack coat and a heavy microsurfacing application traditionally requires more time after paving before the road can be opened to traffic. A thicker application takes longer to set, cure and develop strength, slowing production and operational efficiency.

TRAFFIC VOLUME The Brooklyn Bridge is 3,500 feet long and 30 feet wide, with three lanes of travel in each direction and an Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT) count of approximately 150,000 cars.

Microsurfacing done at night and in cool conditions can sometimes be more susceptible to early traffic damage and loss of stone. An AADT of 150,000 cars is very high, so the microsurfacing must cure and develop significant strength before traffic return otherwise excess damage could occur, in which case the contractor would have to remove the

THE SOLUTION After reviewing the project goals and challenges, the contractor and emulsion producer turned to Road Science, which simulated expected field paving conditions in its laboratory and measured key performance characteristics of the microsurfacing using different emulsifier chemistries.

Road Science determined that a specific emulsifier (ArrTekk 1295) would enable the contractor to meet the job challenges and complete it on time under the restrictive time and weather conditions. The emulsifier is designed to lengthen the microsurfacing life cycle by up to 30% and improve mix consistency and lay-down characteristics, enabling better workmanship and aesthetics. It

also would enable the contractor to open the bridge to traffic quicker, allowing the contractor to pave faster and increase production rates. After reviewing options, the contractor chose ArrTekk 1295 to formulate the emulsion and complete the microsurfacing mix design.

Use of the emulsifier enabled the contractor to open the Brooklyn Bridge to traffic by 5:30 each morning and to finish the job in the lessthan-expected six nights.

DID IT WORK? In a word, yes. The microsurfacing mix design, relying on the special emulsifier chemistry, enabled the contractor to meet the tight project schedule because it provided:

The Berkeley National Laboratory found that while cooler pavements like concrete may provide environmental benefits, the energy and emissions associated with the construction tends to outweigh the sustainability benefits, making asphalt the greener choice..

t seems like asphalt and concrete are always at odds with each other when it comes to our roadways. We can all agree that each material has its advantages and applications where it may be more beneficial than the other.

Historically, concrete has been preferred over asphalt for environmental reasons, but science is starting to see another side.

UHI AND PAVEMENT Studies demonstrating how concrete has less effect on the urban heat island have dominated the discussions about how concrete is better for the environment.

An urban heat island (UHI) is a metropolitan area that is significantly warmer than its surrounding rural areas.

The main cause of the urban heat island is modification of the land surface by urban development which uses materials which effectively retain heat.

Since asphalt, the most common material used for pavement, is dark and has a low albedo (a measure of solar reflectance), it’s been said to generate more heat in urban areas and raise the temperature in cities due to the material absorbing and retaining the heat from the sun.

Cement concrete is lighter, and thus has a higher reflectivity, and a higher reflectance is generally considered a positive as less heat is absorbed.

TOTAL PAVEMENT COST While some studies continue to argue that reflective pavement can reduce

UHI effect, the embodied energy and emissions in some materials may present unexpected drawbacks, according to new research from the DOE’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

We know that the extraction, production and transportation of pavement materials and the construction of pavement maintenance and rehabilitation treatments generate pollution and consume energy.

Therefore, the team used lifecycle cost assessments (LCA) to see the total environmental impact, from cradle to project completion all the way to end of life, for each pavement material.

“The LCA provided a comprehensive evaluation of the environmental burdens from a product or service by quantifying the environmental effects of a product throughout its life cycle,” the study said. “In LCA, the inputs, such as energy and resource consumption, and outputs, such as pollution, are identified and inventoried over the product’s entire life cycle, which usually includes material production, material transport, construction, use and end-of-life.”

What the study found was that while cool pavements may provide environmental benefits that help cities meet their sustainability goals, switching pavement management practices can also change upstream environmental burdens.

The energy and emissions associated with each pavement type’s materials and construction were paired with a regional climate model and simulated building energy consumption to determine the likely impact on buildings. The team was surprised to find that in most cases, the extra energy embodied in the cool material (concrete) far outweighed the energy savings from increasing the solar reflectivity. Concrete also requires a hightemperature process that is considerably more energy- and carbon-intensive than

making asphalt from petroleum.

“Over the lifecycle of the pavement, the pavement material matters substantially more than the pavement reflectance,” Ronnen Levinson, a researcher in Berkeley Lab’s Heat Island Group says. “I was surprised to find that over 50 years, maintaining a reflective coating would require over six times as much energy as a slurry seal. The slurry seal is only rock and asphalt, which requires little energy to produce, while the reflective coating contains energy-intensive polymer.”

RECYCLING & REUSE What the study did not mention was that asphalt is also the number one most recycled material in the United States, making it an even more attractive material for locations concerned about sustainability and the environment.

A wide range of waste materials are now incorporated into asphalt pavements, including ground tire rubber, slags, foundry sand, glass and even pig manure, but the most widely used are reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and recycled asphalt shingles (RAS). The use of recycled materials in asphalt pavements saves about 50 million cubic yards of landfill space each year.

While the research and reasoning on what material to use is continuing to evolve, with asphalt leading the way as the most cost-effective and easy to produce material, state and local governments should be hard pressed to use anything else on our roads.
