Here's what you can expect from most reputable dealers: • New and used equipment to meet your needs: If they don’t have it, they will get it.

• Market trade-in values: They should be able to back up any trade-in number they quote.

• Financing options: Many dealers offer outright purchase or lease financing that is competitive for new equipment, as well as financing options for used equipment.

• Rental equipment: Rental is available when you need equipment for a short term or your purchased unit is in for service.

• Product support: Dealers offer product support both locally and in the field. This includes parts, service and maintenance contracts.

• Logistics support: With contractors “spreading out“ to get more work, there may be a need to move equipment or get support from a local dealer. Dealers can help you make arrangements with their local representative where you are working.

How Technology Simplifies Road

RESURFACING

New technologies allow critical data to be collected at highway speeds

T

raditionally, highway resurfacing projects have been a challenge, not only for the contractor, but the inconvenienced community through which the road passes. To collect the project data needed to perform the resurface, typically there are required lane closures and a team of surveyors collecting data points from along the side of the road with diverted traffic whizzing past.

It was a slow, cumbersome and dangerous process, that affected the daily commuter flow and affected the contractor's project timeline.

But things are better.

Designed to work at the speed of highway traffic, the Topcon SmoothRide resurfacing system is intended to

safely assist road resurfacing contractors without the need for road or lane closures. The system is fully automated with GNSS and sonic tracker control. It is designed to deliver accurate thickness boundaries while maintaining projected yield. It eliminates the need for survey strings, averaging skis and lasers.

"In most situations, it’s inconvenient or impossible, to shut down a road and map its surface using traditional pointto-point surveying methods,” Murray Lodge, senior vice president and general manager of the Topcon Positioning Group Construction Business Unit says. “We’ve developed a way to scan roads at highway speeds with no need for lane closures, crash trucks, escorts or any other typical road survey collection obstacles. The SmoothRide system uses a Topcon RD-M1 (Realistic Dimension - Mapping One) Road Resurfacing Scanner that is attached to a vehicle, typically a pick-up truck. The downward facing laser scanner connects to a standard tow hitch or the front of any vehicle with standard tow hooks. With using standard tow hitches and hooks, the scanner is designed to be easy to remove and adapt to any vehicle, thus eliminating the need to have a dedicated vehicle to operate the RD-M1. The unit is designed to collect

Cruising at normal highways speeds, the 3D surface scanning can cover miles of road in a short time. The collected data is automatically timestamped and stored for the next step of data management and point cloud generation. The mounted scanner captures millions of data points that are collected safely from the cab of the truck or car. Topcon points out that the driver can begin a road-surface surveying session by simply clicking the start button on their laptop computer and go.

Capturing road details at proper speed helps enable SmoothRide to deliver the best possible results.

"I like that we can collect accurate topos while driving 50 miles per hour," Chris Smithson, project manager with Big Creek Construction, Lorena, TX says. "We used it recently on a 3.5-mile section of Ranch Road 2838 in Mexai, TX where we were able to give the state more accurate cross sections and dirt quantities on the two-lane road and shoulders project we worked on. It saved us time and money."

Knowing the surface details in advance allows a contractor to successfully plan for an accurate material calculation, which can help with knowing how much asphalt or milling will be required for the project. SmoothRide is considered to

be especially appropriate for mainline paving or milling projects requiring long sections of road that needs resurfacing.

A feature called Memos is designed to allow operators to create balloons with messages on the map. The collected data can be made visible in the processing software — enabling specific site conditions to be noted for future reference.

A Manage Runs feature enables operation without necessitating an internet connection. The software display's large buttons which are intended to make using a tablet or laptop with touch screen easier.

a USB drive, delete them from the hard drive and add or remove them from the manager.

The RD-M1 Collect 2.0 software has a Plan Route feature that allows for the import of kml files of predetermined routes, designed to help ensure that nothing is missed during the data collection run.

sphalt paving contractors know the challenges of getting hot mix from a supplier. Long waits for material, high trucking costs and lack of control over mix quality can make paving projects incredibly frustrating. And, furthermore, relying on a competitor’s plant to fulfill asphalt requirements can reduce the profitability of the job and pose a risk to a business’s reputation for quality and timeliness.

Investing in an asphalt plant, whether portable or stationary, is a big step.

It takes a lot of research and number crunching to determine if it makes sense for each operation. But after considering all the benefits of plant ownership, it’s easy to see how making that commitment pays dividends early on.

For example, shorter material transport times alone can greatly contribute to efficiency and a fast return on investment. Shorter hauls mean fewer trucks are needed, saving fuel, vehicle wear and labor costs. They also make road crews more productive, never leaving them waiting for materials.

These factors usually result in at least 50 percent better truck utilization for a paving contractor entering the production market. If, for example, truck costs are $70 to $75 per hour, it easily adds up to $1,500 per day.

KNOW THE ROI LANDSCAPE Every scenario is different, but the majority of operations realize a return on a new asphalt plant in just a few years, and some will produce enough to cover the cost of the plant in a single year.

In general, contractors who consistently produce 50,000 tons of material per year find the investment well worth it. Depending on the situation, even those who produce less discover that the benefits of ownership outweigh the costs.

Ultimately, it’s important to work out the math with a product expert to see if ownership makes sense for an operation. A company could be foregoing thousands of dollars in annual profit by continuing to outsource.

Every scenario is different, but a majority of operations realize a return on a new asphalt plant in just a few years, and some will produce enough to cover the cost of the plant in a single year.

arly this spring I was asked to give a two hour presentation at a Washington State Engineering College. The subject matter was “What opportunities are there in the Highway Construction Industry for the College Graduate.”

I started the session by listing what jobs in our field I felt actually needed a college degree. I could see the professor’s face darken when I mentioned that these jobs were mostly “inside, clerical” type jobs. It darkened further when I mentioned that most of those jobs were of the $50k a year or less variety.

But to be honest, I thought the man’s head was going to explode when I said that most of the technical jobs at our paving companies paid nearly twice that money and could be had with no degree.

Trade school is what most of these kids needed, I said.

According to a National Public Radio article I just read, there are some 30 million jobs in the U.S. that pay over $60K a year and a vast number of them are unfilled because today’s youth has been

indoctrinated to believe that if you don’t have a college degree, you will be a failure and struggle to get through life. In reality, I have seen exactly the opposite to be true when considering the applicants who apply to work at at my company.

While I don’t want to stereotype these kids, it does seem to me that they are very ill-prepared to work in the construction world. These kids are saddled with a college degree and a MOUNTAIN of debt.

Throughout their young lives, they were pressured into believing that working with your hands was somehow dirty and beneath them. Now as they venture out into the “real world” they discover they have been sold a fallacy.

I wish I could have counseled these kids before they left high school. I would have told them to be sure of the

direction they wanted to go in their lives and then do some research to see what kind of education/skill-set it takes to get that place you want to be. If an $80,000 a year job is your goal, then a four year college degree is may not be where you want to spend your time.

WHAT'S BEST FOR THEIR FUTURE? Obviously, in the construction world there are a number of positions that a four year degree would be helpful. Areas like Civil Engineering, Accounting, Environmental Quality, Quality Control and similar jobs all contribute to the success of construction companies. At the average paving company, what percentage of the employees are actually working in these jobs? 10% maybe? In my thinking, trade school is a far more viable option

PRODUCTION NOTES for the vast majority of graduating high school students these days. According to the Associated General Contractors, 70% of construction companies in the U.S. are struggling to find qualified workers to fill the positions they have open.

On the other side of the college/ trade school debate is the vast number of unemployed bachelor degree holders in America. These graduates are wandering around under a staggering amount of college debt, unable to find a job. Actually, it is a bit sad. It has been hounded in to these younger generations that if you want a high paying job you need a college degree. In some respects, the trades have been characterized as jobs for those who can’t get into college. But in today’s reality, where 70% of American companies can’t get enough skilled workers to staff jobs paying an average of $60,000 a year, it looks as if there is a big perception problem for today’s youth.

Money isn't the only issue, advocates for career and technical education say.

An even bigger challenge is convincing parents that trade schools lead to good jobs. They remember vocational training from when they were in high school.

The manual labor. The working with their hands. All of which is not necessarily what they aspire to for their own kids.

These parents are hard to convince because there is that stigma attached to the “dirty” and sometimes profane construction worker. The construction trades have this connotation of being dirty jobs and hard work. Parents blindly think they want something better for their son or daughter.

That stigmata is so profound that recently, just north of me in Washington State, the Lake Washington Institute of Technology changed its name from Lake Washington Technical College to avoid being stereotyped as a vocational school.

HARD WORK PAYS OFF Another factor driving educators to push kids toward college seems to be that in a quest for prestige and rankings, and to bolster real-estate values around them, high schools like to emphasize the number of their graduates who go on to

four-year colleges and universities. Good for the schools, but what about the kids?

In reality it comes down to what we as parents and mentors pass on to the younger generations. I am in my midsixties. I grew up in a rural Oregon farming community. From an early age my summers were spent operating a D6 Cat tractor dragging a rod-weeder or a plow back and forth across many 500 acre sections of wheat fields. Between that, cutting and baling alfalfa hay and harvesting the wheat in the fall, I really never had much time to be a kid. But these activities taught me a strong work ethic.

At our high school, there were shop classes offered, drafting classes and economics classes dealing with farm life.

What else could a person need? In reality it never even crossed my mind to go to college. What for? At 14 years old my dad left me in charge of the harvesting of 8,500 acres of wheat on the home farm while he took a crew out to grand dad’s acreage, in next county over and took care of that place.

Looking back on my presentation at the college, I don’t think the session went as the professor had hoped. At the end of the presentation I was deluged with questions about WHY these kids would need to get an advanced education? And did I have any degrees? How could I be successful without any advanced degrees?

Do the lack of degrees hold me back in my consulting engineer field? I answered all these questions as honestly as I could.

As I watched the professor I knew that the answers I was giving, the reality of what I was saying, flew in the face of the college mantra-formal education is the ONLY way forward.

I am pretty sure I got scratched off that professor’s Christmas card list. One young girl asked whether anyone looks down on me for not having a bachelor's degree. I thought to myself, ‘You mean other than your professor?’ I answered the girl by saying that I don't particularly care. I made myself successful with hard work and perseverance. I told her that the real misconception in all this is that without a degree a person can't make much money. My experience tells me that this is not true. I work hard, travel

the world and have never needed any college degree.

I told those students that you make your own path in life. If you are reasonably intelligent, willing to apply yourself to ‘real world’ lessons and you have a strong work ethic, you can go far in the highway construction world. While I was talking at the end, after my slideshow presentation which was run off my laptop through a projector, my screensaver came up on the canvas screen. It is the picture that is with this article. I told those kids that the Thunderbird in that picture is my company’s race car.

And I think that that race car illustrates my overall point nicely: I was a poor ‘dirt farmer’ who reinvented myself and proved that if you apply yourself, learn all you can from everyone around you and are willing to take some risks, you

can be successful without any formal degrees. But NONE of that success will be simply handed to you. You MUST work for it. I believe I may have influenced at least some of those students to at least consider the trade school option.

I stayed well past my 2 hour allotted time, talking with what I hope is our country’s future. Those kids actually seemed amazed to hear a viewpoint outside the academic norm that they have been spoon-fed for years.

Installing a moisture measurement system for your drum plant can help improve mix consistency

T

he eventual quality of the roads we drive on start with consistency and quality at the asphalt plant.

Excessive moisture in the aggregates can lead to serious issues with the mix.

Unless all your stockpiles are completely sheltered and your feeder systems are covered from the elements, moisture will impact your asphalt content.

To help combat these moisture issues more accurately, asphalt plants have started to install moisture measurement systems or MMS devices to help avoid mix deviation and maintain consistency.

“Deviations in asphalt content can lead to reduced payment and nobody wants that,” Michael Worden, vice president of quality control at Pennsy Supply says. “Deviations in stockpile moisture contents, combined with other variations, can substantially reduce accuracy.”

His company installed a MMS system in 2016 and has seen improved product quality ever since.

WHAT IS A MMS? Using nuclear moisture and density technology, moisture measurement systems measure the moisture in an aggregate blend moving on the virgin aggregate conveyor belt. Unlike microwave probes that require contact with the material in the bin or in the stream of aggregates on the belt, the MMS is situated above the belt with the sources below the belt meaning there is no need to have physical contact with the aggregate mix or the belt.

"Before we installed our MMS, our technicians could only rely on the conventional method of using oven dried stockpile samples for obtaining and

monitoring stockpile moisture contents,” Worden says.

The problem with this process is that it’s not only time consuming, taking a few hours each test, but can be unreliable, especially after rain events, as readings are typically only taken two to three times a day.

“The current standard best practice for measuring stockpiles is very inefficient,” Worden says. “Techs have to get in their trucks, drive to the quarry, get a sample from each pile, bring that back and test it.”

On top of the time it takes to collect the samples, the information can be unreliable as once a sample is taken, that pile is already drying out, further changing the data.

“Your moisture can change throughout the day as piles are continually drying out and you have to be able to account for those changes during mix production,” Worden says.

With an MMS system, measurements can be taken every second. In an 8-hour day, you could get up to 30,000 measurements, dramatically increasing

the likelihood of catching any significant changes in the moisture contents of your aggregates.

A MMS can help.

IMPROVING MIX CONSISTENCY The asphalt content of the asphalt mix produced in a drum plant is directly affected by how much moisture is in the aggregates.

“We know that better control of the moisture content in our aggregates directly impacts the asphalt content in our finished mix,” Worden says. “By better understanding these numbers, we can directly improve the consistency and quality of our mix.”

Therefore, it is crucial that the plant be given accurate moisture content for those aggregates about to go into the drum and the MMS does just that.

“If the moisture of your aggregates is higher than what you’ve entered into the plant’s controls, you’re going to be evaporating away a greater mass of moisture than the plant is accounting

operator is also watching the MMS’s read-out like a hawk to make sure the moisture content readings are consistent, and is now able to immediately contact the technicians if there are any significant changes noted in moisture readings. That couldn’t happened before as the plant operator could only rely on the two or three daily moisture contents given to them by the lab”

for and you’re going to have too high of an asphalt content in your finished mix,” Worden says. “Conversely, if the aggregate is dryer than what you’ve entered into the plant’s controls, you’re going to be under asphalting that mix.”

By taking these measurements more frequently, plant operators can better detect issues and control the quality and consistency of the mix.

“This device can help you better understand any deviations in moisture content, therefore improve quality,” Worden says. “The lower the standard deviations of your data, the more

consistent the mix is, the higher the quality it is. You can’t maintain high quality without maintaining consistency.”

Worden says another unexpected benefit of the MMS device has been increased communication between the QC technicians and plant operators, keeping them highly engaged as a team.

“When we initially bought it, we thought we’d be saving time from not having to go out and test samples as often,” he says. “However, we’re now testing the samples more to verify the MMS is reading correctly. Our plant

DRIVING BETTER BONUSES Like any new system, the cost can hinder industry acceptance but Worden says that wasn’t going to keep them from trying it, especially with states adopting Percent Within Limit (PWL) specs for payment and bonus processing.

“Now that PWL seems to be the direction that most state agencies are going, you can be either penalized for high standard deviations or rewarded through bonuses for low standard deviations and asphalt content,” he says.

Lower standard deviations means increased consistency and increased consistency is one key to increased quality.

Since MMS devices can be fully integrated into the plant's control system for full automation, plant manufacturers can write programming for the devices that can act as a failsafe if the MMS system were to ever fail.

“We wrote in our programming that if the MMS’s measured moisture contents drift too far from what’s expected, the plant will automatically default to the manually entered moisture content data determined by our daily stockpile moisture tests,” Worden says. “The system will alarm us if this happens, and we then work with the MMS manufacturer to get it back online.”

oscillation Since oscillating rollers help improve productivity and create a smoother finish on challenging mixes, it’s no surprise these systems is gaining momentum in the industry

rends in technology on construction equipment change often. While roller oscillation was developed in the 1980’s, the systems are becoming more widespread in order to combat challenging compaction applications like thin lifts.

So just what is oscillation and how can it improve your business? We asked roller manufacturers to weigh in.

WHAT IS OSCILLATION? Oscillation technology was introduced in Germany in 1983 as a solution to over compaction.

“Oscillation was initially developed to provide faster, more effective compaction,” Richard Evans, vice president of sales with Hamm compaction equipment says. “Tandem rollers with one oscillation drum and one vibrating drum achieve at least the same degree of compaction as double vibrating drum rollers, but with fewer passes.”

With these vibe systems, the drum stays in constant contact with the material, allowing the roller to deliver dynamic compaction energy to the asphalt layer as an alternative to traditional vibration.

“Oscillation is a non-vertical force that applies energy for compaction without impact,” Mark Eckert, product manager for Volvo Construction Equipment says. In other words, there is

no vibration or up-and-down movement.

The drum stays in contact with the surface, and there are no repeated impacts to the surface for compaction,” The technology cancels vertical motion of the drum and creates horizontal motion only. This provides more compaction force than static rolling but less force than traditional vibration.

“With a vibratory drum, you keep impacting and impacting the mix and eventually you’re going to crush the material,” Evans says. “With an oscillation drum, the surface is the forgiving agent. The drum slides and you have no risk of crushing the aggregates.”

Oscillation can help contractors achieve higher density numbers, getting them closer to bonus money simply because of the way the drum interacts with the mix.

to each other create a rotary movement measured as tangential amplitude,” Bryan Downing, global sales consultant at Caterpillar, Inc. explains. “The oscillatory system creates asphalt compaction via a massaging motion which creates motion of the aggregates, allowing them to realign in a denser matrix. This massaging motion transfers compaction energy to the asphalt layer and less energy transfer into surrounding structures and infrastructure below the layer.”

WHERE TO USE IT Since oscillation creates a more gentle compactive effort, the systems are especially important when working in tight spaces or on thin lifts.

“These rollers are suited for compacting thin lifts, tender mixes, joints, bridge decks or when working near structures,” Bert Erdmann, heavy compaction product manager with BOMAG says. “Additionally, the oscillatory exciter system

allows the roller to be used on mat temperatures that are lower than typically allowed for standard conventional vibration. This is mostly because oscillatory excited drums do not “impact” the asphalt mat like a conventional roller, and, therefore, they don’t crush the aggregate, as density increases are achieved through manipulation.”

Sensitive applications are also ideal for rollers equipped with oscillation.

“Traditional vibration can damage surrounding structures and materials,”

Eckert says. “Oscillation eliminates that higher level of force that can damage sensitive applications and the surrounding environment. Operators can turn vibration off on traditional rollers and perform static rolling or use pneumatic tire rollers, but oscillation provides enough force to achieve compaction quicker than static rolling while still not damaging the mat or adjacent structures.”

This also makes oscillation compaction ideal for night work.

“Many cities prefer the use of these rollers at night because they don’t make as much noise as a traditional vibratory rollers because you’re not constantly impacting the material,” Evans says.

“Also, if you’re working in a downtown populated area, oscillatory rollers are a good fit because they don’t create those unwanted vibrations to the surrounding structures.

“In addition, if you’re rolling over old drainage pipes, fiber optic cables, etc., you run the risk of collapsing those with a vibratory roller,” Evans continues. “You don’t have that risk with an oscillatory roller and you also won’t create cracks in neighboring structures.”

"Oscillation rollers are a complement to vibration rollers," Dynapac product manager Tim Hoffman says. "They can take the place of static rollers, maximizing flexibility of having a front drum vibrating and rear drum oscillating."

Oscillation Uses At a Glance Oscillatory compaction systems can be used on all phases of the compaction process. It delivers the best results when creating compaction in the following areas; • On thin asphalt layers – less than 2-in.

Oscillation is also useful for joint compaction as most asphalt contractors have to deal with hot and cold lanes when they pave.

“When a paved and compacted lane has already cooled down, if you come and hit the new material with a vibratory roller, you’re not only going to push the new material down, you’re also going to compact that cold joint again and crush it,” Evans says. “Oscillation will squeeze that material down without causing any adverse effect to the cold, pre-compacted side.”

HOW TO USE IT Oscillation systems do not require any additional settings or training to use as it’s considered a self-regulating amplitude that operators can turn on and off.

Still, oscillation shouldn’t be used in all circumstances. It’s important contractors use conventional vibration in the breakdown (initial pass) compaction position.

“Traditional vibration can damage surrounding structures and materials,” Mark Eckert with Volvo says.

“Oscillation eliminates that higher level of force that can damage sensitive applications and the surrounding environment."

“Conventional vibratory systems in the initial passes utilize higher compaction energy that will yield quicker compaction growth when mat temperatures are more conducive to compaction,” Dowling says.

Therefore, oscillation is best used in the intermediate and finish positions.

Due to the effective compactive nature of oscillatory rollers, many contractors find that with an oscillatory roller, they can improve productivity by eliminating that third finish roller on a jobsite and still achieve the same results.

JOBSITE INNOVATIONS both intermediate and finishing rollers,” Evans say. “Often times we’ve found that the use of a typical breakdown roller and an oscillation roller will be enough to achieve compaction. The oscillation roller provides the smoothness so you don’t need to run a third roller in static mode.”

Erdmann adds that oscillatory rollers typically achieve very smooth asphalt surface results since they “iron out” impact spacing marks produced by conventional vibratory rollers.

As with conventional vibratory systems, operators need to ensure that machine travel speeds do not out-pace the vibratory systems. With conventional vibratory systems, optimal compaction occurs when the roller speed is set so that 10-14 impacts/foot is created.

“Rolling speed control is important for oscillation as well as vibration, unlike static rolling,” Eckert says. “Rolling with oscillation versus static rolling will

reduce the number of passes necessary to achieve target densities.”

Similar to conventional vibratory systems, too high of travel speed for an oscillatory system can result in undesirable surface finish and tearing and/or pushing of the asphalt layer.

“A tip for operators in sensitive applications is to only use oscillation in the rear drum,” Eckert continues. “For thicker lifts that are not in sensitive applications, I recommend they engage vibration in the front drum and oscillation in the rear drum to help them achieve maximum compaction results.”

Erdmann adds that contractors must also keep an eye on mat temperature when using an oscillatory system.

“When the mat temperature drops, the operator must keep an eye on the temperature gauge and turn off the standard vibratory drum, once the critical temperature is reached,” he says. “The operator can continue rolling with the

oscillatory system on for approximately another 15 to 20° F, depending on the type of mix being compacted.”

Most contractors know that once a mix hits 175° F, there should be no more vibration on the mix, but with oscillation, there is still time to achieve ideal density numbers.

“If you have any viscosity left in the mix at all and you still need to hit those bonus numbers, you can use the oscillation as low as 130° F,” Evans says.

“As long as the material is still moving, you can use oscillation safely at any temperature."

This also means oscillation is ideal for compacting in cooler temperatures since you can work for longer into the season.

KEEP IT RUNNING Due to the nature of oscillatory compaction, the drum stays in direct contact with the mat surface for a longer period of time compared to conventional vibration.

“These rollers are suited for compacting thin lifts, tender mixes, joints, bridge decks or when working near structures,” Bert Erdmann, heavy compaction product manager with BOMAG says.

“Over time, this can potentially lead to drum wear and a thinning of the drum shell,” Bert Erdmann with BOMAG says. “Contractors using early models of competitive oscillatory rollers in some applications had issues with reduced drum life.”

However, Oscillatory roller maintenance is very similar to conventional vibratory machines.

“Due to the nature of an oscillatory system having multiple eccentric weights to create the massaging motion, additional power transmission needs exist,” Dowling says. “The multiple eccentric weights are driven by a power transmission belts. The power transmission belt has high load-carrying capacity to ensure smooth and longlasting operation of the eccentric systems.”

Therefore, it’s important to regularly check drum mount isolators and belts for damage, as well as monitor the drum

shell for thinning or wear at the edges.

Operators should also listen for unusual noises.

“There is increased maintenance for oscillation components like drive belts or chains,” Eckert concludes. “For many contractors, the benefits of oscillation far outweigh these issues.”

Surface Distress

Pavement preservation is not a one fix cure-all, be sure you’re using the proper repair for the problem

A

ccording to the American Society of Civil Engineers, one out of every five miles of pavement in the United States is in poor condition. That equates to over $420 billion worth of repairs necessary for highways only. Since states are trying to do everything they can with the funding they’re given, most areas can’t even come close to combatting their road repair challenges.

When funding is an issue but repairs are still necessary, states and municipalities have turned to pavement management programs for their road maintenance and rehabilitation in order to extend the life of those structures and keep the traveling public safe.

Contractors need to be prepared to provide these services with the equipment and the experience necessary in order to stay competitive.

PAVEMENT MANAGEMENT PROGRAMS This article is not earth-shattering, it’s basic knowledge that not all pavement preservation methods are created equal.

In order for preservation efforts to be successful, we know that the right repair needs to happen on the right pavement and at the right time. To find that sweet spot, pavement management programs are created.

PRESERVATION UPDATE

A pavement management program typically consists of four steps: 1. Assess current roadway condition: Addressing the current roadway condition usually consists of a mixture of tests that are used to quantify the pavement condition. Those tests include measuring skid resistance, pavement roughness (ride quality), pavement distress (FHWA distress identification manual) and assessing pavement structural condition

(through taking core sample or by using a deflectometer).

2. Predict future roadway condition: Predicting the future roadway condition is a bit more complicated but it can be done using a deterministic regression analysis. This approach uses past and current cracking conditions to create pavement trends.

These trends help to predict what could happen with the pavement in the future.

However, roadways typically do not follow trends. While we can try to predict future weather trends and traffic conditions, we just don’t know so many pavement management assessment programs use a probabilisitic prediction approach which incorporates, and accounts for, uncertainty.

3. Conduct alternative analysis: This step includes finding out what options you have for the type of pavement distress present. Do you need pavement maintenance or a rehabilitation process?

Asphalt contractors should be prepared to address an array of pavement preservation jobs.

4. Select appropriate alternative: Weigh your options and choose the best method for your pavement.

PAVEMENT MAINTENANCE Knowing what options you have for each type of pavement distress is the best first step in completing the fourth step in your pavement management program. In addition to sealing and patching, there are generally seven different techniques of treatments for maintaining our roads.

While these maintenance activities do not add structural capacity to our roadways, each one has their benefits and drawbacks depending on the condition of the pavement.

1. FOG SEALS A fog seal is a light spray of diluted asphalt emulsion that restores the very top layer of a pavement surface. Fog seals should be used when the existing roadway has

surface oxidation, mild raveling and extremely minor cracking.

2. CHIP SEALS Chip seal applications consist of a spray of asphalt emulsion, followed by aggregates. A chip seal or scrub seal should be used on surfaces with oxidation, raveling, minor cracking and polished aggregate. Because you’re placing aggregate on top of the emulsion, you’re able to get enhanced surface friction.

3. SLURRY SEALS A slurry seal is a mix of asphalt emulsion and aggregates placed at 1/2-in. thick or less. They should be deployed on surfaces that have surface oxidation and raveling.

Slurry seals are not recommended for pavements that have significant or large cracks.

4. MICROSURFACING Microsurfacing is similar to a slurry seal in that both techniques use a mixture of emulsion and aggregates, but during microsurfacing, a polymer modified asphalt emulsion is sprayed using a higher quality aggregate. This allows for a faster break, meaning the pavement can be reopened to traffic sooner. Microsurfacing addresses the same problems as slurry seals and cape seals do, but it can also take care of rutting. Microsurfacing cannot however, address cracking.

5. SCRUB SEALS A scrub seal is similar to a chip seal in that an asphalt emulsion is sprayed on to the pavement but behind the spray bar, a set of brooms forces the emulsion down into the cracks. After emulsion is placed, aggregates are placed on top.

6. CAPE SEALS Cape seals are a combination preservation treatment. The base of a cape seal is a chip seal or a scrub seal with a slurry seal or microsurfacing application placed on top. In addition to oxidation and raveling, slurry seals, microsurfacing and cape seals can address minor cracking, polished aggregates and mild bleeding.

7. ULTRA-THIN BONDED OVERLAY This preservation treatment involves asphalt emulsion being sprayed followed immediately by a thin lift asphalt overlay of 1-in. or less.

Contractors should consider placing a ultra-thin bonded overlay on surfaces with oxidation, raveling, minor cracking and polished aggregate or on surfaces where there is pavement bleeding.

PAVEMENT REHABILITATION Since pavement preservation does not add structural integrity to the roadway, sometimes you need to consider

a pavement rehabilitation process in order to maintain the safety standard of the pavement. Typically there are four options contractors have to complete these type of repairs.

1. STANDARD 2-IN. OVERLAY These thicker overlays add structural capacity which increase the amount of traffic that can be applied on the roadway.

2. HOT IN-PLACE RECYCLING (HIR) In this activity, the pavement is heated and either rejuvenated or mixed with new material to be placed in order to bring the top 1-in. to 3-in. of the pavement back to a safe condition. The HIR process helps to rejuvenate the roadway.

3. COLD IN-PLACE RECYCLING (CIR) During CIR, 3-in. to 6-in. of material is milled up and then mixed with a stabilizing agent and replaced on the roadway to address structural issues.

Both CIR and HIR are good for roads with severe cracking, potholes, rutting, shoving and those roads with surface defects.

4. FULL DEPTH RECLAMATION (FDR) During FDR, the existing bound material, aggregate base and even the soil under the roadway are mixed together and rebound to create a new bound layer that provides further strength to the roadway.

FDR addresses the same issue as CIR but the FDR process will also address water bleeding and pumping.

Getting back to basics can help states and municipalities stay on top of their pavement maintenance and rehabilitation needs. Contractors need to be ready to assist them in their decisions and fulfillment of these best practices.

This is the best defense for preserving the pavement network which will increase road life and lower costs.

Innovation Can Combat Construction Struggles

Manufacturers are creating technologies that can maximize efficiencies for both skilled and unskilled laborers on-site, not eliminating either role, but helping to make them more productive.

T

he “skill” in the construction industry’s skilled labor shortage is driving market change, favoring skills-reducing and efficiency-improving innovations. This is not just a matter of simply moving the work from the jobsite to the factory. Rather, opportunities for manufacturers seem to lie in creating technologies that can maximize efficiencies for both skilled and unskilled laborers on-site, not eliminate a role.

There are different ways to gain efficiency with labor-saving innovations.

Some innovations reduce the skill level required to install a product or system, allowing contractors to populate crews with fewer specialized workers. Some others reduce installation time, which allows a crew to do more work in a given day. Some innovations do all the above.

Which of these strategies provide the best option as the construction industry continues to see unprecedented growth as the labor shortage continues?

INTEGRATION OF NEW TECHNOLOGIES There are several types of new technologies that have been slowly introduced to construction sites and these should become more widespread.

Drone technology has solidified it’s way on to construction sites. A study by Software Connect found that 26% of construction professionals are already using or plan to use drones by 2020.

Drones have moved away from just a marketing tool and are now being used for site preparation, quantities measurement, inspections and more.

Using them can help save contractors an exceptional amount of time and money.

In addition, lasers and digital technologies are improving quality and reducing waste.

While both tools have been available for some time, widespread availability and lower entrance price points are making their precision available to a growing number in the workforce.

“From laser levels and layout guides to laser measurers, new tools are coming on the market that are more precise and affordable,” says Russ Gardner of Calculated Industries.

“Now, measurements can be accurate to one thousandth of an inch or a degree, helping improve quality and reduce material waste,” he added.

Equipping employees with such tools will help them build better and faster, and taking a systematic approach to planned replacement of existing old technology with the new technology can be a cost-effective approach.

Automation has also begun to tackle some of the most dangerous jobs, which is a trend we definitely expect to continue in 2018 and beyond. Robots have been used to go into pit mines, and in Pittsburgh, a robot is used to tie rebar for bridge decks.

STRIDES IN SAFETY Wearable technology can help make jobsites safer by allowing supervisors the ability to better monitor workers and equipment. These wearables use sensors to monitor activity on construction sites.

Data on both worker and equipment activity can be transmitted to offsite managers in real time, allowing management to watch activity in twodimensional drawings and 3D models.

In addition to productivity increases, as drones become more popular both for personal and business use, we could see the use of drone technology become a trend in construction safety.

An additional aspect of construction safety is protecting your heavy equipment. When assets are in good condition, the likelihood of unexpected breakdowns decreases. Unexpected breakdowns not only have the largest impact on operations, they are typically the most costly type of maintenance.

There are also the risks of unauthorized use and theft. Using equipment without permission opens the opportunity for injury to the operator, location and the asset, while a robbery means loss of project time and money to replace it.

IoT technology in the form of telematics are gaining in acceptance and use and can help you manage and safeguard your assets on both fronts by providing a direct connection with your heavy equipment.

Don't shy away from these helpful tools. You never know the opportunities they could bring to your company.
