It's Good to Be Back

A

fter CONEXPO 2020, the world went virtual. Instead of walking a tradeshow floor and sitting next to your "friendly competition" in an educational session, we sat alone in our homes and tried our best to keep moving forward.

At the onset of 2022, tradeshows thankfully started to happen again and we were able to attend the National Asphalt Pavement Association annual meeting in Arizona.

There, over 1,000 industry partners gathered once again to learn the latest challenges, and opportunities, facing our industry.

While it was great to attend the educational meetings, what was even better? Getting to talk to our friends once the meetings ended.

"Once a virtual meeting ends, you turn off the camera and sit by yourself again and go back to your daily tasks," Tim Kowalski with Wirtgen America said. "Virtual meetings don't give you the opportunity to walk outside to the lobby to network with those in the industry that are sharing your same struggles."

Being back in person allows for growing together at a more rapid pace because we can share our ideas and opinions more freely. With the industry facing a mounting number of challenges, leaning on each other to advance our initiatives will be more important than ever.

While the world figures out how to adapt to the new normal, here are some ways to accomplish in-person events moving forward.

1. MAKE SAFETY A PRIORITY Pulling off a safe and successful in-person event is possible, but requires planning, active communication with attendees and ongoing collaboration with vendors.

Event planners should consider temperature screenings, questions about vaccinations and on-site COVID-19 tests when organizing a meeting. Make sure these are all added to the registration process. Stuff swag bags with hand sanitizer and extra masks. Prepare for extra cleaning around the meeting rooms.

2. COMMUNICATE Communicating your efforts goes hand in hand with safety priorities. You have to communicate with attendees regularly and consistently.

Post reminders about safety throughout the event. Give them an easy way to report activities they don't feel comfortable with.

Knowing you're working with them to keep everyone as safe as possible will make everyone feel more relaxed about attending.

3. EDUCATE ATTENDEES Education will continue to be key to holding safe events and letting your staff and attendees know about when they should stay home will be extremely important.

4. OFFER A HYBRID MODEL Those who may feel like they can't attend inperson meetings due to vulnerable health risks should still be able to feel like they are part of your event. If possible, try to offer a hybrid model where attendees can be both in-person and virtual through live-stream events.

5. BE FLEXIBLE Finally, you have to be ready to pivot and change. Event planners need to be flexible and consider safety a priority and cancel or postpone the event if it cannot happen safely.

Consider developing flexible refund policies for attendees for events that involve a participation fee is another great option that will allow attendees to feel confident in their safety and participation.

In-person meetings build trust and stronger relationships and we need to continue to find ways to move forward.

The National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) has unveiled "The Road Forward" vision for net-zero carbon emissions which includes goals to help the asphalt industry take action.

"We believe that, over the next several decades, reducing carbon emissions will be the country's foremost imperative, persisting even amid changing political or economic situations," Richard Willis, vice president engineering, research and technology at NAPA says. "The asphalt industry is committed to being a part of the solution and we are working towards achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Corporate support will pave the way toward innovation and implementation of net-zero carbon emissions solutions."

Luckily, the asphalt industry is wellpositioned to make these changes and continue to be the pavement choice of the future and here’s why.

RECYCLABILITY Asphalt is America’s most recycled material, and asphalt mixes containing reclaimed asphalt pavements (RAP) have been in place and performing for many decades.

89.2 million tons of RAP are used annually in new asphalt pavement construction in the United States.

The net reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from the use of RAP in new asphalt mixtures from 2009 to 2019 was estimated at 21.2 million tonne CO2e. To put this in perspective, this is equivalent to the annual emissions from 460,000 passenger vehicles.

Cost savings are another factor for recycling pavements. Every year, $3.3 billion are saved by using RAP – making asphalt pavement both environmentally and economically sustainable. Nationally, NAPA says the average 21.1% RAP used in new asphalt mixtures saved $7.80 per ton, compared to mixtures using all virgin materials.

Recycling is just one reason that asphalt is the most sustainable pavement. Asphalt pavements that are designed and constructed as "Perpetual Pavements" never need to be removed and replaced. According to the Federal

Highway Administration (FHWA), perpetual pavements are 17 to 20 percent cheaper than a traditional asphalt pavement to maintain.

WARM MIX ASPHALT In 2010, FHWA made warm-mix asphalt part of its Every Day Counts initiative to speed the deployment of technologies that can improve highway projects' quality, sustainability and safety. Using warm-mix asphalt (WMA), allows producers to lower the temperatures at which the material is mixed and placed on the road.

Reductions of 50° to 100° F have been documented and have the obvious benefits of cutting fuel consumption and decreasing the production of greenhouse gases.

On average, contractors report energy savings of almost 25 percent during warm-mix production. When WMA is fully implemented across the industry, the U.S. will save an estimated 150 million gallons of No. 2 fuel oil per year, while also slashing carbon dioxide emissions by an equivalent of 210,000 cars annually.

SPEED OF CONSTRUCTION Paving with asphalt cuts construction project time significantly and eliminates the long curing times of concrete. As a result, traffic flows more smoothly, impact on commerce is minimized and safety hazards are reduced. In one state highway department comparison, asphalt crews placed more than 10 times the pavement surface that a concrete contractor did. The asphalt was placed in 11 nighttime-only shifts, while the concrete work went on around the clock for 12 days.

approximately 4% of the fuel consumed could be saved, reducing annual vehicle fuel consumption by about 7 billion gallons, equal to taking 10 million vehicles off the road every year.

ENVIRONMENTAL PRODUCT DECLARATIONS As the industry moves towards more stringent green initiatives, Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) will begin to play a major part in the construction process. EPDs are standardized ways of reporting the life-cycle environmental impacts of products. EPDs are like a “nutrition label” for products that report a selection of environmental impacts.

EPDs are third party verified and need to follow ISO 14025 guidance and procedures.

Eight states are currently looking at or already implementing EPDs for the project procurement cycle and the asphalt industry is working towards creating EPDs for asphalt mixtures NAPA's Emerald Eco-Label EPD tool was developed in conformance with ISO 14025 and EN 15804, which establish principles and procedures for developing a Type III environmental declaration program and describes the potential impacts of a product.

GOING DIGITAL INCREASES PRODUCTIVITY Maintenance operations are the heart of your business and need to be properly managed to make sure your equipment and crews are able to continue the work that needs to be done without delay.

Many companies use paper forms to document when a piece of equipment is in need of repairs, but Gallagher found this method was causing too many delays and sought a more streamlined process to keep their equipment working.

"Manual forms created a long paper trail and it would take us up to three days sometimes to find out if a repair was needed," Brian Ludke, Gallagher shop foreman says. "One of our employees took the initiative to create a QR code in conjunction with a Wufoo online custom form builder which allows all of our equipment operators to conduct a comprehensive equipment inspection in the field by simply scanning the code with their phone.”

Employees can enter all the details of the equipment condition including attaching pictures of any problems. As soon as they complete the form, any faulty conditions noted, including photos, are communicated immediately to the shop.

Not only does this streamline the process of maintenance, but it also

improves productivity. Mechanics can easily make one trip to a jobsite prepared with the proper parts to tackle a problem, instead of making several trips.

"This was a game-changer for our mechanics," Ludke says. "The in-app checkpoints for each machine make it simple and efficient for problems to be reported and inspections are completed regularly because the process is much easier for operators to follow. This keeps us up to date on any problems that they might be seeing so we can address them before they become critical issues."

Gallagher also used the barcode feature for their warehouse operations as well for crews ordering needed supplies.

On-Site Testing Lab In addition to its paving, preservation and production divisions, Gallagher Asphalt also owns Chicago Testing Laboratory (CTL), which has five office locations, including one at the Thornton production facility.

CTL is a resource for the testing and inspection of construction materials, including: asphalt and asphalt materials, liquids, aggregates, concrete and soils. In addition, the lab provides consulting services in the fields of geotechnical engineering, construction inspection and other specialty areas but specifically helps Gallagher stay on top of their quality.

“With the CTL right on site, we can run a test and have results in less than an hour,” Jim Trost, executive vice president at Gallagher says. “We can take samples in morning and get results in an hour instead of four days.”

All test results are being monitored back in the lab with data being uploaded in real time from field technicians. The lab can see any issues and correlate with samples in the field and immediately make adjustments at the plant if necessary In addition to testing materials for Gallagher, CTL services IDOT, the Wisconsin DOT, and other asphalt paving contractors in the area. them when they are next in the yard or have it placed in a designated crew truck the next morning. This cuts down time wasted in line waiting for someone to gather the supplies at the storeroom.

"It's all about visibility and transparency," Don Gallagher, IT manager for the company says. "We are working towards transparency across all functions of our operations and this is one way we're accomplishing that. The

impressive thing is an employee had this idea at 2 p.m. on a Wednesday and 24-hours later it was operational."

OPERATIONAL CONTROL IMPROVES EFFICIENCY This "culture of innovation" can be seen in many other functions of the business, but is perhaps most on display in the company's “Command Center.” If you've ever been inside a dispatch room for an asphalt plant, you know it can be a bit of chaos. Gallagher partnered with XBE three years ago to help better manage their operations.

"We have seen everything from job start times being delayed due to preventable issues, a surplus of trucks on the job and forecasted schedules which asphalt plants couldn’t meet the demand if we had run them with everyone operating in their department silos," Will Gallagher, vice president of construction at Gallagher Asphalt says. "We were looking for ways to streamline our communication and prevent problems before they happen.

This makes our operations run much smoother in real time and gives more time back to our staff to think at a more strategic level."

The XBE system gives all stakeholders on the job or at the plant access to real time information they need to properly manage operations in a cloud-based platform that can be seen 24/7.

"The system visually documents what was once disparate information and puts it all in one place where everyone can see the most current schedule," Will says. "We know what work we have in the coming weeks and what resources are needed across all jobs and aggregate it at a high level for long term planning.

We can see projected vs. actual performance and the system will forecast how the remainder of the day will trend if we continue operating at the current pace.

We can automatically forecast cycle

times from the plant based on prior performance. We know all the locations of our drivers vs. the location of the paver and can see the time the truck spent at the plant and the time on the job.

“We used to have many opinions of what can or can’t be done. Now there’s hard data to prove those theories and that helps tighten the variance of the daily unknowns. We retrained our team to think differently about planning their jobs and adjusting their plans more frequently when new information is given. This has provided significant pick-up to the bottom line."

Visibility and efficiency are great, but XBE has also taken some of the experience needed for the operations out of the equation.

"Generationally, the seasoned veterans know exactly how many trucks you need and what risks you may run into when the jobs are actually running," Will says.

"This program better helps the younger generation catch on to the industry faster.

You don't necessarily need 12 years of experience to plan the job any more. You can schedule it in great detail and the system will optimize based on the inputs.

At the end of day, a lot of the planning is just math."

The company also uses XBE for their Yard 2.0 operations to control trucks coming in and out.

"Data from XBE flows autonomously to the trucks to not only maximize loading of the truck, but also for e-ticketing," Will says. "We no longer need to have a dedicated person at each plant but instead can use RFID tags to recognize them. We are also working to develop license plate recognition to identify the truck when it comes into the yard."

plant in 2020. Their old blending control was 15 years old and had some components that were no longer supported.

Instead of simply replacing components of their existing system, they decided to completely overhaul their controls.

"Our plant is 22 years old and the old WEM controls worked in conjunction with push button control panels and instrument gauges which were suffering nuisance failures after all those years," Jim Trost, executive vice president at Gallagher says, "After a lot of discussions with our plant team and reviewing various supplier quotations, we decided to upgrade to a total control system that eliminated all the buttons and gauges and moved the operator interface for all functions to the PC. “We chose WEM based on feedback from other asphalt industry total control system users we visited and WEM’s ability to adapt and customize the things that we wanted as part of the new system,” Trost continues. “WEM came out to our site and worked with our team to discuss all the details of what we wanted to accomplish and together we were able to create a system that was right for our plant.”

Initially, the Gallagher plant operators were reluctant to move from a panel system to the integrated controls, but once they saw how the system could work, they understood how it would make their job easier.

"You can see the discomfort in the plant operator's eyes when you tell them what they’ve worked with for years is going to go away for something new," Trost says. "Once we discussed the benefits of the total controls at length and got them involved, they stepped up and took the lead on working with WEM to get the most we could out of the new controls. I’m very proud of the job our team did on this project, these guys go above and beyond and take pride in everything they do."

Trost adds that starts are a lot easier and with all electric AC tanks. The valves open as they need to when you switch the mix over "It's just one button to get it all switched over,” Trost says. “It’s much easier now."

WEM Analytics also helped sell the new system to Gallagher.

"We are such a data-driven company that the analytics option

WEM was offering was a huge incentive," Trost says. "The advanced report package displays various realtime operational dashboards and that helps us know what's happening at the plant so we can make better business decisions."

The Gallagher team pulled the first wire on the old system in December of 2020 and the plant was ready to make mix the following March when the weather allowed. This included a total renovation of the entire control room in addition to the controls upgrade. The plant can produce over 600-tph and uses innovations like camera systems at load-out for safety and a MAXAM Transporter bin top conveying system to ensure the mix is being transferred to silos as efficiently as possible.

When the transporter system was installed in 2015, it was one of only two in the country and eliminated four existing 600-tph transfer conveyors, four diverter gates, and five silo batchers. This change alone added up to a $20,000 annual maintenance savings and about $14,000 per year in electrical savings.

START SMALL THEN GO "ALL IN" Making major upgrades to your facilities is one thing, but don't be afraid to start small. Even a small step forward is better than staying still.

"The small things add up," Trost says. "Our QC manager came up with the idea to use iPads and shared OneNote software with test report forms in our QC labs to document all test results.

This allows us to keep everyone up to date in real-time and that's a little simple thing that didn't take a lot to get done and it's paid dividends to our operations by dramatically improving communications for our multi-site operation.”

Once you start, don't be afraid to continue trying new things and go "all in" on innovating.

"When we first started out, we dipped our toes into certain technologies instead of making a commitment because we wanted to make sure it was going to work for the company," Will says. "A lot of systems we have purchased didn't work out for us because we didn't lean in to them and leverage them to their fullest potential and we learned from that. We came out better from it and that comes from leadership and trickles all the way down.”

What Construction Contractors Need to Know About EV Infrastructure

Building a network, one charging station at a time

A

s electric vehicle (EV) sales continue to grow, a key element of successful implementation and adoption is a network of public charging stations readily available to consumers.

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) makes a transformative investment in electric vehicle charging in the U.S. The Biden-Harris administration has prioritized a total of $7.5 billion to buildout 500,000 charging stations by 2030 and make EVs accessible to all Americas for both local and longdistance trips.

Of the $7.5 billion, the BIL allocates $5 billion over the next five

years for the National Electric Vehicle Charging Formula Program, which provides funding to states to create charging stations and establish a national network. The funds will be distributed by predetermined formulas, and can be used for the installation, operation and maintenance related to EV infrastructure. Also, under this program, charging stations must be located along Federal Highway Administration designated alternative fuel corridors.

In addition, $2.5 billion will be allocated over five years for a competitive grant program that will support innovate approaches. This is a grant program that aims to strategically deploy publicly accessible EV charging infrastructure along designated corridors.

is authorized to award grants to states, local governments, metropolitan planning organizations and other public entities.

The growth of the EV market has been steadily increasing over the years and states are thinking about how they will handle the demand for charging stations. States are considering how to replace gas tax revenues for the fuel that electric vehicle owners will not have to purchase, including user fees, creating additional revenues off of it and benefit from clean energy and clean transportation. AASHTO Provides EV Charging Feedback The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) provided feedback to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) regarding the agency’s “request for information” on the development of guidance for electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

In a letter to the FHWA, “AASHTO and the state DOTs readily support the President’s ambitious goal of building a new national network of 500,000 electric vehicle (EV) chargers by 2030, as funded in part through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA).

However, there are many challenges that must be overcome, both technical and logistical, in order to make this goal a reality.

These obstacles include: the capacity of the electrical grid and its proximity to potential charging stations, especially in rural and underserved areas; industry capacity to meet the sudden increase in demand for EV supply equipment; and coordination, on a huge scale, with non-traditional stakeholders that have existing business models and supply chains.”

AASHTO recognizes widespread deployment and implementation is the primary goal however, they have identified obstacles that need to be resolved including operation and maintenance of the charging infrastructure.

“Long-term operation and maintenance of charging infrastructure should not be a state DOT responsibility, just as state DOTs do not operate or maintain gasoline or diesel fueling infrastructure today. If state DOTs must operate and maintain charging infrastructure during this period of transition, they need maximum flexibility in utilizing funding to pay for operating and maintenance costs.”

“It’s not just about installing or deploying charging infrastructure, it’s really about the transportation experience," said Andrew Wishnia, deputy assistant secretary for climate policy U.S. DOT. "We want a convenient, reliable, safe easily accessible system for all users.”

LEADING THE CHARGE Several state departments of transportation are already leading efforts on building out charging infrastructure and laying the groundwork for a national network.

Some states are working diligently to keep up, and others are not as focused since the number of EV sales remain a small percentage in comparison to internal combustion engine vehicles.

Toolkit to Help Rural Communities Build out EV Charging Infrastructure The U.S. Department of Transportation released a new, free resource to help rural communities across the country take full advantage of federal funding for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. The guide, Charging Forward: A Toolkit for Planning and Funding Rural Electric Mobility Infrastructure, can help connect community members, towns, businesses, planning agencies, and others with partners needed for these projects.

This toolkit was released in anticipation of the distribution of $7 billion in funds to accelerate the deployment of a national electric vehicle charging network from the President’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Of these funds, $4.75 billion will be distributed by formula to states, and an additional $2.5 billion will be distributed through a competitive grant program that will support innovative approaches and ensure that charger deployment meets Administration priorities such as supporting rural charging, improving local air quality and increasing EV charging access in disadvantaged communities.

“Drivers in rural areas often have the longest commutes and spend the most money on gas, which means big benefits from having access to electric cars and pickup trucks if they are affordable and easy to charge where they live and drive,” said Secretary Pete Buttigieg. “The investments in the President’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law for a national EV charging network are an important step toward ensuring that EVs aren’t a luxury item and that everyone in America can benefit from clean transportation.”

According to a report by statista, California has the most EV charging stations and charging outlets in the United States. New York ranked second and Florida ranked third. In January 2021, California had over five times as many charging outlet as New York.

Across the county, the overall number of public charging outlets for EVs was just under 113,600, with the number of chargers continuing to grow with the increase of plug-in EV sales.

It's a collaborative effort between all functions at the state level to execute EV infrastructure implementation. Many state energy offices or organizations are creating plans specific to their state and communities based on the needs of the residents.

“State DOTs have the experience with large scale infrastructure build out that other state agencies and local governments are not as familiar with,” said King. “That gives us opportunities to integrate our transportation infrastructure with our power infrastructure and information technology infrastructure in a holistic way as opposed to staying in different silos which could lead to worse results overall.”

WIN FOR CONTRACTORS The influx of federal funding to incentivize the build out of EV infrastructure can lead to additional jobs for the construction industry. The majority of jobs associated with expanded EV infrastructure will fall into technical sectors associated with energy, as well as engineering, planning and construction. These jobs, under the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) sector 238, specialty trade contractors whose primary activity is performing specific roles involved in building construction or maintenance and repair work. At this time, new industry sectors aren’t being defined around EV infrastructure installation, instead jobs are being enhanced by the addition of skill related to the construction of such infrastructure.

Just like anything in construction, EV charging infrastructure won't be built in a day. This type of infrastructure and compound charging stations will require electricians, planners and general contractors.

Rapid development of EV charging network, coupled with access and education will be required to meet projected demand for charging and promote statewide uptake of EVs. From a workforce development perspective, the skills and knowledge of how to construct a road, parking lot or other facets of hard infrastructure will be useful in building a charging network, consequently creating more jobs in the roadbuilding and construction industry.

HOT IN PLACE VS. COLD IN PLACE Both hot in-place recycling (HIR) and cold in-place recycling (CIR) eliminate the cost of transporting, processing and stockpiling recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) while eliminating the need to create expensive hot mix asphalt (HMA). Studies estimate that these recycling trains reuse 85 to 100 percent of existing pavement, saving money and virgin materials. But which in-place recycling method is best for which project?

"HIR, CIR and FDR are all performed at different stages in a pavements life, and they treat different distresses," Cross says. "Each treatment will require a good functional base to be a viable option and each one will require a wearing surface overlay once complete."

Let's take a closer look at these treatments and where to use them.

HIR is an on-site in-place method for rehabilitating pavements. The process is used to correct surface distress such as cracking, raveling, low friction values and distortion confined to the wearing course such as corrugations and shoving. HIR cannot be used to correct most structural failures and can only be used to fix distresses in the upper 2 to 3 inches of the pavement.

"It works very well for top down cracking if you catch it early enough and it's a good treatment for pavements that are structurally sound but are oxidized," Cross says. "It's really for functional distresses."

During this process, the existing HMA pavement is heated up then removed or scarified. The material is then mixed with a soft asphalt or rejuvenating agent along with additional aggregate, if needed, and then placed and compacted as a new recycled material right on the roadway. The processing train does require a preheater and scarifier for this method.

If the pavement is in need of deeper repair and an overlay, then look to CIR. CIR begins with

milling from 3 to 6 inches of existing pavement which is then processed, mixed with a recycling agent (either emulsified or foamed asphalt) and then repaved and compacted. Traffic can be allowed on this surface in a few hours and a top overlay is then needed as a final touch.

"This is an excellent treatment to repair pavement cracking and even some upper structural issues," Cross adds.

FULL DEPTH REPAIRS Full-Depth Reclamation (FDR) is the process of pulverizing all layers of existing asphalt pavements in place to depths of up to 20 inches. FDR is best for high severity distressed or failed pavements, where rehabilitation methods including maintenance or mill and overlay, are not enough to rejuvenate the pavement. For added stability, stabilizing agents can be used.

cement, lime, or kiln dust. Bituminous stabilization used foamed or emulsified asphalt to improve binding of the materials.

"During this process, you're basically taking your existing pavement and starting over by turning it into a stabilized base course," Cross says. "You grind up the material, mix it with a stabilizing agent then compact it."

The FDR process requires a reclaimer/stabilizer added to the equipment train to complete the work. Road reclaimers pulverize the asphalt layer and mix it with the underlying base to stabilize deteriorated roadways. The reclaimers can add foamed or emulsified asphalt or other binding agents during pulverization or during a separate mix pass.

SAVINGS ADD UP These processes have been gaining traction for years due to their material and cost savings compared to traditional paving methods.

"Cost savings add up quickly with these because you're using materials that are already bought and paid for," Cross says. "Everything is used again without having to be transported back to a plant location and new hot mix doesn't need to be brought in."

According to a study done by Hot In-Place Recycling, contractors can stretch their resurfacing dollars up to 40% further than traditional remove and replace methods with HIR. Studies show that HIR reduces the overall carbon footprint by 28% versus conventional “mill & fill” resurfacing and reduces overall trucking needs by 50-100%.

compared to traditional methods depending on the process that is used and haul time. Adding Cold Central Plant Recycling (CCPR) (see sidebar), drives cost savings even higher for these projects.

Research about the environmental benefits of CIR by the Recycled Materials Resource Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison College of Engineering has revealed that cold in-place recycling saves, on average, 23% in both energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions and 20% in paving-related water consumption as compared to the mill and overlay method. In addition, CIR reduced overall virgin aggregate consumption by 37%.

Another Tool in the Toolbox As mentioned in the article, cold central plant recycling (CCPR) can take the cost savings associated with cold in-place recycling even further.

The CCPR process consists of milling the existing road and stockpiling the recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) in a central location close to the project. The recycled material is processed in a central plant setting where it is blended with a specially designed emulsion or foamed asphalt. Trucks haul the cold recycled material back to the road site where it is paved with conventional paving equipment. This process can also be used in new construction using RAP from other sources. This process can save 40% on average when compared to other traditional methods. Agencies can also expect a higher life cycle when using this method.

“CCPR is really no different than cold in-place,” Steve Cross says.

“With CIR you process the millings on site but with CCPR, you can use remote stockpiles of millings offsite and bring them back to the jobsite. I’ve seen projects use a pugmill mixer, or I’ve even seen multi-unit trains drop the processing unit onsite and run the millings through that. It comes out to be very cost effective and a really good use of your materials.”

CCPR typically works as a base or binder mix.

The time these processes save during construction also add up and there is typically less disruption to

the end user. The single process of reclaiming existing materials in place typically takes one-third of the time of traditional methods, which require

multiple processes including removal, hauling, re-preparing the subgrade, replacing with new aggregate base and then paving.

Most projects can be opened while construction is ongoing as well.

No matter what preservation method you choose for a project, making sure you know what will work, and what won't, is essential. And you always need to have the proper design in place for a project.

"These processes can handle all kinds of different distresses and they've been done on all different types of pavements, and all different traffic loadings," Cross says. "As long as you have a proper structural design, they can handle the traffic and they will perform."

2022 Trends in Skilled Trades Regardless of what’s on the 2022 horizon, one thing is for sure: things will evolve and change and the ever-resilient construction industry will continue to pave the way to the future

W

ith 2021 officially behind us and with the world around us changing by the minute, many are wondering what the skilled trade industry will bring us in 2022. Even with the U.S. getting back into a work routine, the pandemic labor shortages are still at the forefront of everyone's mind - wrecking havoc on project timelines and plans.

The current labor shortage can be attributed to multiple factors including the lack of trained workers, the rise in unemployment numbers, and the fact that many skilled trades workers were laid off as a result of companies closing their doors for a short period of time. As the industry becomes adjusted to the new reality of living with the ebbs and flows of Covid, and as the US economy attempts to normalize as well, it is crucial that the industry begins to consider how to re-staff the workforce in 2022.

1. TECHNOLOGY WILL LEAD THE WAY The architecture, engineering and construction industry (AEC) is not a sector known to adopt new technologies quickly. When change does come, it moves at a glacial pace. Learning a skilled trade takes hands-on training and years of experience to master, but the training can be unsafe and expensive when on a jobsite. With virtual reality, workers can train in a simulated, lifelike environment and construction equipment training simulators are becoming more prevalent and accepted.

2. AMERICANS ARE LOOKING FOR STABLE JOBS While the pandemic has been an unsettling time for most, the skilled trades industry has proven to be one of

the most stable and steady parts of the workforce. People looking to find jobs in these skilled trades can expect great opportunities and hard to find stability.

The jobs that many individuals will transition to following the pandemic include roles like these. Many people in industries more impacted by layoffs, like restaurant and retail, are seeking a hands-on job similar to the one they had before the pandemic hit.

3. SKILLED LABOR SHORTAGE WILL CONTINUE TO BE A CHALLENGE According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, we're going to need more than four million skilled laborers to replace the nearly eight million lost from the labor force during the pandemic. The industry is going to be challenged filling those positions, due to the fact that the skills needed are in high demand. The pandemic has not only created a huge labor shortage, but many baby boomers who have left the industry have also chosen not to return and have opted for early retirement rather than returning to the workplace. Still others are reluctant to return to work for health reasons, especially if they have contact with others or if they are working in a job that requires face-to-face contact.

4. ATTRACTING A YOUNGER WORKFORCE The trade education pipeline is still abundant with talented skilled trades graduates. The challenge will continue to be reaching talent exiting the school system, and more importantly establishing your own programs and educational partnerships. Consider establishing an in-house apprenticeship program or

partner with nearby high schools and colleges with Career and Technical Education (CTE) offerings. Better yet, offer both training tracks, because one can be a better fit than others depending upon the life circumstances of students.

Apprenticeships and Career and Technical Education programs are in the midst of a massive resurgence, spurred by the critical skills shortages. Chances are good that there are local programs— offered through schools or government initiatives—where your company can offer expertise and support. If there aren’t existing programs, you can help create one from the ground up.

5. SKILLED TRADE JOBS COULD SOLVE LABOR SHORTAGE There are many unfilled jobs in the U.S. today. Home improvement projects and a competitive housing market have driven the increase in demand for skilled workers. Filling these available jobs is the first step but the deeper answer lies in training and retaining talent once they have been hired leading to longer standing employment and a true new workforce to replace the mass amount of workers that have retired from the skilled trade industry.

Regardless of what's on the 2022 horizon, one thing is for sure: things will evolve and change and the everresilient construction industry will continue to pave the way to the future.
