INTRODUCTION TO SUSTAINABILITY INCREASED EMPHASIS ON SUSTAINABILITY ​ You are reading the first “Forcit sustainability in short” publication. In our strategy we have set out a clear target to be an industry leader in sustainability and to minimise the carbon footprint of our production. The intention of this report is to introduce the reader to our current situation and our ambition level going forward. ​ In this report we introduce, by practical examples, what sustainability means for us and describe our focus areas: People, Planet and Profitability. We think that sustainability is much more than emissions – it is about meeting our own needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. We believe that prioritising sustainability as a key strategic focus area is both a basic requirement on any responsible enterprise and a business driver. We will elaborate further on our sustainability focus in this report.

Numbers presented in this report indicate our performance in 2020. The data is collected from financial reports and reports prepared for authorities. The report presents energy, logistics and waste figures insofar as they are monitored or measurable at this stage. For production facilities, complete results are available. The effects of FORCIT Defence’s and FORCIT International’s production are included in the Finnish production. Travelling or commuting is not included. The share of green

investments is evaluated using the principles set by the European Commission for valid green investments. ​ SUSTAINABILITY IS AN IMPORTANT AREA WHEN EVALUATING SUPPLIERS​ Under the first part of 2020, LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) calculation for a total of 8 own-produced products was completed. Completion of a total of 11 EPDs (Environmental Product Declaration) was verified in June and later presented by EPD Norway. EPD summarises all emissions that are released when a product and its raw materials are produced, delivered to the site, and blasted. This information demonstrates manufacturing transparency for our customers, helps them to evaluate the sustainability profile of their wider supply chain and making sustainable choices.

GREETINGS FROM THE CEO The broader need for a complete shift to a more sustainable way of living poses a challenge on us all. Sustainability is today also a clear business growth driver, and this is the case also for Forcit, and we believe Forcit is well-positioned to lead the way in the Nordics. Therefore, one of the grounding pillars in our strategy is to be an industry leader in sustainability. ​ The topic of sustainability is broad, and we have divided our sustainability perspective into three areas: people, planet, and profitability. The boarders between these areas are thin, and to give a more practical insight on where the main attention of our sustainability work lies, I will emphasise four topics: safety, solid business ethics, products and services driving sustainability (=handprint), and excellence in our operations (=footprint). ​ ​ SAFETY ​

In our industry safety is paramount, and we bear the responsibility towards our customers, employees, partners, and society to act responsibly and safely. Remarkable improvements were made in terms of safety performance in 2020 and we are firmly committed to our long-term ambition of zero accidents. Our guiding principle around safety is utterly clear; we never compromise on safety. ​

While our products and services enable activities that are crucial for society and for reaching carbon neutrality, our operations still leave an environmental footprint. We are committed to work hard to reduce this footprint. A significant job was made in 2020 to map the environmental footprint of our products as part of creating environmental product declarations for all main Forcit products. With this information we have a clear view on where we are today. We are now in the process of setting up an ambitious plan to reach carbon-neutrality in our own operations, and to set out roadmaps for the minimisation of production waste and other burdens to our environment. Through excellence in our operations we are committed to reduce our footprint while at the same time maximising the positive impact of our products and services. ​

Our greatest contribution to a sustainable society is done through our people, services, and products – our handprint. Our civil explosives services and products enable the construction of infrastructure that do not only enable society to function and economies to thrive, but also, e.g., enables the carbon footprint reduction in transport and the production of clean energy. Furthermore, it enables the excavation of metals and minerals critical to the European Commission’s greenhouse gas emission reduction roadmap. In our consulting business we help builders, contractors, and mining companies to manage and minimise their environmental impact. We believe that our people, products, and services enable a safe and sustainable society. ​

OUR FOCUS: PEOPLE, PLANET, PROFITABILITY SAFETY IN BIG PICTURE

Our commitment to sustainable development is divided into three focus areas. Each of the focus areas and all together have an impact on our sustainability work. We have several Seveso-classified production sites and stations around the Nordic region – and we work systematically to minimise the risk of accidents and to create a safer workplace. Forcit has and will pay special attention to ammonium nitrate storing and handling facilities. Our HSEQ team is making regular controls to ensure compliance to our strict standards. We have also been focusing on further developing our overall approach to risk assessments through education and the harmonisation of methods and procedures.

Seveso practices set the demands for chemical storages and warehouses depending on the capacity. For example, emergency drills are executed regularly to enhance our overall capability to act in the right way in case of e.g. a chemical hazard, and to cooperate with neighbourhood and rescue departments.

All near misses have been investigated in detail and corrective actions done. ​ 2020 was a very different year in many aspects and required significant resilience to run operations as normal under abnormal circumstances. Covid regulations changed the world and work – and it changed how we work at Forcit as well. Forcit got a unique opportunity to adjust ways of working also related to safety during extraordinary times, and how to overall ensure the continuity of our operations during a crisis, this time in the form of a global pandemic. We created and updated almost one hundred work instructions and risk evaluations.

Our policy is to conduct all our business in an honest and ethical way, as well as to implement transparency and traceability in business operations and practices. ​Forcit is committed to observing and respecting all universal human rights as defined in the United Nations (UN) Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights agreements and to promote the realisation of the universal human rights.

The code of conduct is important to follow in Forcit generally, but especially important for the Defence business unit and all their business transactions and relationships. In addition to complying with all Sustainability in short

In addition to respecting licensing authorities, Forcit follows the company’s internal guidelines and uses its judgment when assessing each potential export case.

Realising our employees are the single most important assets in our business, we provide full-time accident insurances to our employees. This guarantees the fastest and best possible medical care, and, thus, quicker recovery and ability to return to a normal life and work sooner in case of an accident. In the future, safety, health and well-being are playing an even more important role, when our age structure is naturally changing. We do care and have already paid attention to this.

GOOD PRACTICES

KEMI MATRIX FACTORY CAPACITY IMPROVEMENT

As a part of the Kemi matrix factory capacity improvement project in 2020, also the safety systems at the matrix station were upgraded. The existing silos were upgraded with a safety rail, where the operator can connect a safety belt during truck loading to eliminate the risk of losing balance and falling. The new silos were designed and built with a new layout, utilising the SafeRack system that provides employees with increased safety and better ergonomics while truck loading.

Employees can safely reach the Kemiitti or transportation truck’s deck, regardless of the position or size of the ​truck.

Forcit’s over six years at the mine have been completely free of accidents, and there have also been fewer near misses. Positive feedback is also given to Forcit regarding development activities. ​ We realise that every day without accidents needs be earned and the safety journey is never complete.

Thus, this recognition will serve us as a positive reminder of safety every day. This respected award also reinforces our belief that every work injury is preventable, and the work towards that is extremely important. Safety is always the top priority in our operations and one of the key success factors of our business. It plays an important role in the image that we present to our customers.

OUR FOCUS: PEOPLE, PLANET, PROFITABILITY FOSSIL FREE – MORE & MORE​

A detailed carbon footprint evaluation of our operations will be done in 2022. We have already gained knowledge from our EPD work, and we can assume that one of the biggest parts of our greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) is formed in energy production, which we can to some extent minimise by making clever purchasing decisions. Most of our sites are already using renewable electricity and we strive to maximise that in coming years also in the joint purchases. Possibilities to minimise energy usage are related to insulation, low energy technology and closed circulation. We have succeeded in increasing the percentage of renewable energy in our operations in recent years; 73 % of the total energy and 79 % of the used electricity is fossil free renewable energy in our locations. This share has increased significantly, 12 %-units in the last two years.​ The second significant factor is fuels. The vehicles we use for internal and external deliveries are mostly powered by fossil fuels. Raw material deliveries make significant addition to total kilometres.

We are already doing a mapping of the truck driving emissions and will focus on economical driving and idling minimisation in addition to the new motor technology (EURO 6). We will examine possibilities and advantages of fossil free fuels and

hybrid cars. Green solutions are developing fast.

For example, new green technology, namely electric cars, are already adopted in use in the Norwegian Consulting business.

WASTE REDUCTION HAS A MAJOR IMPACT​

Waste management varies considerably from country to country and even in different areas within countries. Nevertheless, we have managed to sort most of our normal industrial waste material either into recycling or into energy recovery. To get even better results in waste recycling in the future, we must find out practical solutions especially for cardboard and plastic waste handling. To increase the amount of recycled waste, a test for recycling high quality plastic films from pallets packaging is noticed to be possible in practice.

As for the hazardous waste, it is important to look for alternative, non-hazardous raw materials or products. If hazardous chemicals are necessary for the process and cannot be replaced by other substances, it is important that they are fully utilised in the processes, and that no residues but only the empty packaging will remain as waste. Due to the nature of explosives, the products have no waste impacts after the detonation has materialised and explosion gases are formed, and that leads to some benefits in further life cycle assessment (LCA). In-

creasing focus must be set on explosive and intermediate product waste (such as matrix waste) minimising, as these form the biggest part of our waste and there is currently no other handling possibilities than open burning.

R&D SUPPORTS US IN DEVELOPING SUSTAINABLE PRODUCTS AND PRODUCTION​

In addition to our own production the focus will also be on the customers’ side. Successful R&D work with nitrogen free emulsion will help our customers and bring new benefits especially for the mining business. A Forcit development project related to nitrogen free emulsion has already been widely noticed and will directly affect mine water emissions.

Strong investments in ICT solutions for blast optimisation increase the effectiveness and minimise the loss of explosives to blasted rock and the environment. ​ ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS OF THE BLASTS​

With the industry’s widest portfolio of experts, services and state of the art instruments for measuring vibration, noise, dust and other impacts originating from blasting and excavation, the consulting business unit assists builders, contractors, mines and also permit granting authorities in all sizes of projects and challenges.

As the biggest player in the Nordics, we have a genuine opportunity to influence and show the new normal way and best practises of running the businesses.

ECONOMICAL DRIVING

Economical driving is an easy and effective way to decrease emissions and increase profitability. As a pilot we have been monitoring a few vehicles in detail and therefore have good insights on how to improve our results. The results clearly show the effectiveness of delivering maximum loads. Monitoring also revealed opportunities to decrease our emissions by focusing on idling times and maximum speed. Idling and cold starts in wintertime increase overall exhaust gas emissions and fuel consumption.

Diagrams clearly show the difference between motor standard EURO 5-6 and older motor technologies. Every renewed truck certainly reduces emissions. Increasing the size of deliveries and thus reducing the driven kilometers also cuts down CO2 emissions for delivered tons. In our measurements with Volvo Dynafleet, we noticed that when the average size of Kemiitti delivery increased by 30 %, the CO2 emission decreased by 1.5 tons in a year.

SHORTLY ABOUT ENVIRONMENTAL PRODUCT DECLARATION The Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) study means evaluating the environmental impacts of a product (or service) from cradle to grave. The study was performed following the requirements of International LCA standards (ISO 14040 and 14044), Product Category Rules (PCRs) for Explosives and Initiation systems (NPCR 024:2016 version 1.0), and Standard EN 15804:2012. The LCA and the EPDs have been verified by a third party. The LCA study was performed during 2019–2020 to provide information for the eleven Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). Global warming potential (GWP) result defines the carbon footprint of studied product per

functional unit (i.e. per 1 kg of a product). All greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are included in the GWP impact category using individual characterisation factors for each substance to convert them to CO2 equivalents. ​ This work stated that the raw materials that have the highest mass fraction in a product, also have the highest contribution to GWP. In most cases, the transportation phase of raw materials and finished or semi-finished products to user site have lower GWP impact than what is caused in the detonation phase. ​

We see this comprehensive study as a good way of gathering information for ourselves on life-cycle accountability. It is a tool for R&D and it is utilised by customers, as well. In the future, we need to consider how to increase the use of renewable energy and secondary fuels and materials in our processes and raw materials.

OUR FOCUS: PEOPLE, PLANET, PROFITABILITY KEY FACTORS IN SUSTAINABILITY FOR BETTER PROFITABILITY​

Profitability is a key factor and condition when evaluating the reliability and capability of a company. Without profitability a company cannot thrive and develop. Profitability is, thus, a key component for any sustainable company. Expectations from owners, societies and authorities encourage us to develop our operations to a more sustainable direction and to pursue the leading position in sustainability in our industry. That leads to energy efficiency and reduced waste.

In our business, the normal waste handling and recycling is a routine task when it is compared to processing explosive waste. This kind of material must be handled and transported in the same way as explosives. Currently the only way to handle explosive residuals is open burning, but we are trying to find other options for material reusage. When material reusage is possible, it will minimise emissions to air and increase safety, as several handling stages of explosives become unnecessary.

Formation of off-spec material is caused either by process, raw material or human error. Data collection is needed to understand process challenges better. Operators have an important role in writing down their observations. During more accurate follow-up many best practices have been taken into use in each shift and in written instructions.

Recycling of production residual streams have been realised in large scale in Hanko for many years already. Diluted acids and so-called nitrogen water is being re-used at companies in the Finnish chemical industry (approximately 6,000 tons in 2020) or recycled back to our own process (200 tons in 2020).

GREEN INVESTMENT EVALUATION​

We have re-invested a significant part of our yearly turnover in developing our business and to support growth. When it comes to following up green investments, we are using the EU guidelines to ensure a strict and transparent classification. After evaluating our investments in year 2020 the total amount of “green investments” amounted to 6 %. It is a considerable sum of money for minimising our carbon footprint by using recycled materials and using less fossil fuels, and for innovating technology that produces less waste and emissions to air.

Forcit is in the middle of an intensive investment program to develop and grow our business. Many of the investments we make are creating workplaces in remote areas and in areas where there are high unemployment rates. Furthermore, we purchased a remarkable amount of all contractor work from local companies during year 2020. ​ In the coming years, our sustainability strategy directs us to do proactive co-operation with our suppliers, mainly with ammonium nitrate suppliers and logistics companies. Ammonium nitrate strongly affects our CO2 emissions and – as our main raw material – also profitability. By being transparent and persistent in customer relations we can achieve logistical advantages that benefit both parties.

Affecting blasting emissions by overall optimisation and investing in modern ICT development is also in

focus in our customer projects. R&D contribution will be needed in the discussions regarding plastics, waste forming and raw materials. ​ Recent investments in QA facilities and resources inevitably point out the importance of control measures in productions sites in supporting good-quality operations. The most important role of the QA/R&D in sustainable development is to anticipate and quickly respond to potential quality problems, thereby reducing waste both in the process and at the customer site. Key factors are well-known, monitored and analysed raw materials, intermediates of the product, and final products.

This makes it easier to spot a potential error in the process; through rationalisation and validation, less chemicals and materials are consumed.

GOOD PRACTICES

One good example of recirculation and green attitude is the new Medium Diameter cartridge unit in Hanko. In order to improve capacity and to extend the range of dimensions, a new cartridging unit was being designed. A decision was made to utilise a de-commissioned process unit and its building in order to minimise the need for new equipment and the need to scrap equipment in perfect working order​. A rigorous planning process enabled us to use most of the old process unit and its machinery, and the green investment part ended to level of 40 %. ​ Thorough safety analyses were done prior to initial tests and prior to start-up.

In Norway, the ministry responsible for infrastructure projects has set a target to reduce CO2 emissions by half in the short term. Forcit can benefit from this development, as we are well-placed to demonstrate that our operations are competitive also in terms of environmental values. As the Norwegian example points out, our EPD work is relevant at present day already, and the demand for the development of charging technology utilising fossil-free fuels is apparent.

To be more energy efficient, all our new stations have improved insulation and utilise heat pumps instead of traditional heat sources.

The aim is to find partial electrification solutions for each operation. For example, a large warehouse we are building this year, will be equipped with an electric forklift.​ During last year we introduced three new bulk stations, which will reduce the distance to the sites considerably. This, in addition to more efficient logistics, will reduce the use of diesel fuel and thereby reduce emission from our vehicles. ​ We reduce waste by sorting and recycling. At some locations, we have a contract with the local waste handling company to do the recycling for us. This will guarantee at least 70 % recycling level.

Hanko factory has a history of almost 130 years of dynamite manufacturing and currently it’s the only dynamite plant in the whole Nordics.

Vihtavuori factory has a history of almost 100 years. In the last decades, operations have focused on emulsion production, R&D and bulk services.

Urjala bulk station and Kemi bulk station / factory started their operations in the 1980’s, with one Kemiitti truck in each. Today both stations have high delivery capacity.

Lapua and Tuusula are newer bulk stations on the Forcit map with approximately 10 years of history. Both stations have a great location for servicing customer sites nearby.

BULK FLEET

The newest generation Forcit MEMU (Mobile Explosives Manufacturing Unit) truck concept provides significant advantages and represents the latest development in charging technology. Compared to older generations the new one has double charging capacity and uses approximately 50 % less diesel engine hours per pumped kilo at the bench. The new truck comes with a high matrix tank capacity – minimising the need for refilling trips to the station and allowing the charging team to focus on charging work, when drilling is ready, in tight 24/7 operation schedules. ​ Diesel consumption of the new truck and production of greenhouse gases is 50 % lower than in a traditional MEMU truck. At a large mining site the annual benefit in terms of reduced diesel consumption can be over 15,000 litres annually.

Development and focus areas in mining and construction industry strive for a more sustainable supply chain of explosives to customers and end users. Since the beginning of 2010, Forcit Sweden has focused on environmentally safe production of emulsions that also includes the logistics chain to customers.

All emulsion transfer pumping from transport tank to storage tank is done by electrical power. During 2020 over 500 transfer pumps were carried out at customer sites by electrical power.

UNDERGROUND TECHNOLOGY

Presently in Sweden there are many planned and on-going tunnel construction projects. Several of these tunnelling projects are located in urban areas, where, in addition to profitability, environmental requirements for damage zones and vibration must be taken into account. To achieve the expected quality deep knowledge of the explosives and charging technique is required.

Forcit technology for underground charging system is based on electrical power and the charging process doesn’t produce any emissions into to the tunnel or workplace. By using electrical motors and the latest technology to adjust the charging concentration after requirement of damage zone , Forcit underground units operate at the forefront of today’s technology.

Forcit is a significant player in UG operations in Sweden’s tunneling business.

INVOLVED IN MAJOR PROJECTS THAT PROMOTE SUSTAINABILITY FORCIT Consulting won the project Fornebubanen for Oslo commune in 2020, the largest metro project in Norway in recent times. The project is an important urban development initiative and a catalyst for greener mobility solutions. The scope includes signalling infrastructure, seven new stations and new maintenance facilities at Fornebu.​ FORCIT Consulting works as vibration consultant at the Finnish Jokeri Light Rail project. The length of the line is approximately 25 km, of which 16 km will be in Helsinki and the remaining 9 km in Espoo.

Jokeri Light Rail will replace trunk bus line 550, which is the busiest bus line in the Helsinki region.​

THE NEW METRO IN STOCKHOLM

The metro should be an attractive travel alternative for all groups in the society and provide conditions for social sustainability. The expansion of Stockholm’s metro will contribute to reducing public transport’s consumption of energy and the impact on the environment and health. Stockholm’s metro system will be expanded by approximately 30 km of underground tracks and 18 new stations. The project has a budget of 42 billion Swedish kronor (4.18 billion euros). The planned start of traffic happens phase by phase in years 2026–2030.

There will be approximately two million residents and over a million jobs in Finland’s capital region in 2050. The goal is to steer the increased mobility resulting from the population growth into sustainable modes of transport: public transport, walking and cycling. Constructing housing, workplaces and services along the Jokeri Light Rail route is advantageous and complies with the principles of sustainable development. Thanks to the proximity of services and the fast light rail, residents will have less need to use their own car.

FORCIT Consulting has the task of performing an inspection within the risk areas for the entire project.

FORCIT Explosives is involved in most of the blasting operations by supplying emulsion, cartridge, detonators and explosives know-how. Forcit helps customers by doing risk analyses and enabling safe storing and handling of explosives and chemicals on site in inhabited areas.

Stockholm is expected to grow with just over 35,000 people a year, making Stockholm one of the fastest growing urban areas in Europe. Since Stockholm is growing so rapidly, the demands on public transport are also increasing. ​

CARBON-NEUTRAL FUTURE TOWARD ZERO GHG EMISSIONS​

The Paris Agreement’s long-term target is to control and reduce global warming, recognising that this would substantially reduce the risks and impacts of climate change. This should be done by reducing emissions as soon as possible in order to “achieve a balance between anthropogenic emissions by sources and removals by sinks of greenhouse gases” in the second half of the 21st century. Under the Paris Agreement, each country must determine their own actions to stop the climate change. ​ The long-term target for Sweden is zero net greenhouse gas emissions by 2045 at the latest, which

means that the emissions of greenhouse gases from activities in Sweden shall be at least 85 percent lower in 2045 compared to 1990. The Swedish government has set ambitious goals for sustainability, including going fossil-free by 2045 and 100 percent renewable energy.

Norway has also set a similar target of reaching carbon-neutrality by 2050. The country already generates more than 95 percent of electricity from hydropower plants, meaning that there is a limited scope for further emission cuts in the power sector.

The focus is more on electric vehicles or supplying electricity from the national grid to offshore oil and gas platforms to reduce their use of gas turbines.

The share of wind and solar power in total energy production will increase.

In Finland, the governments’ plan is to ensure that Finland is carbon-neutral by 2035 and carbon-negative soon after that, by accelerating emissions reduction measures and strengthening carbon sinks. Each country has its own detailed road map to reach CO2 targets. ​​

GHG emission reduction steps involve every business, production and nation.

At Forcit we want to live up to our strategic target of being an industry leader in sustainability and are, thus, having ambitious targets to reduce our environmental footprint and supporting the European strive toward carbon-neutrality. Different country-specific basis may lead to different technologies and principles in our operations, but the overall ambition is the same. We have set the target on ourselves to be carbon neutral in our own operations by 2035.

There will be different challenges due to the energetic materials we are dealing with and we must evaluate risks and legislation before we change anything in raw materials, processes, or waste handling. Safety can never be compromised.

COUNTRY-SPECIFIC EVALUATION IS NECESSARY​

These changes presume significant changes in energy taxation, regulations and a financial tendency for green technology, but it is more than obvious that Sustainability in short

Our sustainability work going forward will focus on the following six areas: energy and water consumption, waste reduction, transportation options, production development and R&D, innovation and co-operation with suppliers.

Some actions regarding travelling, paper usage, batteries, packaging materials will be outlined as well. Compensation possibilities and their reliability will be considered if needed but are not the priority. Most of the actions we will carry out will directly benefit our customers to achieve their targets as well. Overall co-operation and long-term business relationships are for example helping every party to minimise transportation emissions. ​
