Types Of Toenail Fungal Infections And Their Causal
Microorganism:
Dermatophytic infection: This type of infection is caused by the dermatophyte fungus. It is also known as distal subungual toenail fungus. The patient can develop an infection when the fungus attacks the healthy tissues under the nail. Dermatophytic infection can lead to more complications like tinea pedis (athlete's foot), tinea cruris (jock itch) and tinea corporis (ringworm).
Athlete's foot: It is milder than other fungal infections. But it can spread quickly if not treated properly. An Athlete's foot is caused by an infection with a type of fungus called Trichophyton rubrum. In this case, both feet can get affected at once. Wearing closed shoes for longer periods traps moisture between toes, which is a breeding ground for fungal infections. Hence it is important to wash your feet frequently with soap and warm water.
White superficial: This is a non-dermatophyte. It infects the top layer of the nail rather than the follicles.
Proximal subungual: It is also a fungal infection caused by a dermatophyte fungus. It usually attacks the base of the nail or the top of the foot. This infection is more common in HIV-positive patients than in others.
Candida: Although it is the least common toenail infection, it is a yeast infection that weakens the nail and causes pain. It can occur due to poor foot hygiene, humid weather, hormonal conditions, thyroid and others.
